COVID-19 is now identified in almost all countries in the world, with poorer regions being particularly more disadvantaged to efficiently mitigate the impacts of the pandemic. In the absence of efficient therapeutics or large-scale vaccination, control strategies are currently based on non-pharmaceutical interventions, comprising changes in population behavior and governmental interventions, among which the prohibition of mass gatherings, closure of non-essential establishments, quarantine and movement restrictions. In this work we analyzed the effects of 707 governmental interventions published up to May 22, 2020, and population adherence thereof, on the dynamics of COVID-19 cases across all 27 Brazilian states, with emphasis on state capitals and remaining inland cities. A generalized SEIR (Susceptible, Exposed, Infected and Removed) model with a time-varying transmission rate (TR), that considers transmission by asymptomatic individuals, is presented. We analyze the effect of both the extent of enforced measures across Brazilian states and population movement on the changes in the TR and effective reproduction number. The social mobility reduction index, a measure of population movement, together with the stringency index, adapted to incorporate the degree of restrictions imposed by governmental regulations, were used in conjunction to quantify and compare the effects of varying degrees of policy strictness across Brazilian states. Our results show that population adherence to social distance recommendations plays an important role for the effectiveness of interventions and represents a major challenge to the control of COVID-19 in low- and middle-income countries., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. In most cases, chlorination is used for effluent disinfection. However, this process can lead to the formation of byproducts hazardous to the environment and public health. Therefore, new disinfectants, such as calcium hypochlorite (CH) and peracetic acid (PAA), were investigated as alternatives. This study aimed at determining doses of the disinfectants PAA and CH to be applied to the soil and analyzing the possible changes in the major chemical and microbiological attributes of the soil, thus encouraging the practice of reusing wastewater in agriculture. Initially, toxicity bioassays were conducted with lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seeds in order to determine which concentrations affected germination and also which would be analyzed. From these trials, three concentrations of each disinfectant were chosen to be subjected to basal respiration, microbial biomass carbon and metabolic quotient analyses. Doses of 3, 5 and 10 mg L - 1 were used for PAA, and concentrations of 25, 32 and 64 mg L - 1 for CH. Thus, it was observed that the greater concentration of each disinfectant provided a significant increase in the metabolic potential of microorganisms. However, it was observed that PAA increased ecotoxicity besides promoting changes in the chemical attributes of the soil, compared to CH. On the other hand, concentrations of 3 mg L - 1 and 25 mg L - 1 of PAA and CH, respectively, did not cause large impacts and could be an alternative in effluent disinfection with the aim of recycling it in agriculture., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Nanomaterials have unusual properties not found in the bulk materials, which can be exploited in numerous applications such as biosensing, electronics, scaffolds for tissue engineering, diagnostics and drug delivery. However, research in the past few years has turned up a range of potential health hazards, which has given birth to the new discipline of nanotoxicology. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a promising material for biomedical applications, namely due its biocompatibility. Although BC has been shown not to be cytotoxic or genotoxic, the properties of isolated BC nanofibres (NFs) on cells and tissues has never been analysed. Considering the toxicity associated to other fibre-shaped nanoparticles, it seems crucial to evaluate the toxicity associated to the BC-NFs. In this work, nanofibres were produced from bacterial cellulose by a combination of acid and ultrasonic treatment. The genotoxicity of nanofibres from bacterial cellulose was analysed in vitro, using techniques previously demonstrated to detect the genotoxicity of fibrous nanoparticles. The results from single cell gel electrophoresis (also known as comet assay) and the Salmonella reversion assays showed that NFs are not genotoxicity under the conditions tested. A proliferation assay using fibroblasts and CHO cells reveals a slight reduction in the proliferation rate, although no modification in the cell morphology is observed.

Titanium (Ti) is currently the most widely used material for the manufacture of orthopedic and dental implants. Changes in the surface of commercial pure Ti (cp Ti) can determine the functional response of cells, and is therefore a critical factor for the success of the implant. However, the genotoxicity of titanium surfaces has been poorly studied. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the genotoxic potential of a new titanium surface developed by plasma treatment using argon-ion bombardment and compare it with an untreated titanium surface. Accordingly, comet assay, analysis of chromosomal aberrations (CAs), and Cytokinesis Block Micronucleus (CBMN) assay were carried out, using CHO-K1 (Chinese hamster ovary) cells grown on both titanium surfaces. Our results show that the untreated titanium surface caused a significant increase in % tail moment, in the number of cells with CAs, tetraploidy, micronucleus frequency, and other nuclear alterations when compared with the negative control and with the plasma-treated titanium surface. This difference may be attributed to increased surface roughness and changes in titanium oxide layer thickness.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate canine lungs obtained from non-heart-beating donors after unilateral lung transplantation subjected to partial liquid ventilation with perfluorodecalin., Methods: Twelve donor dogs were killed and kept under mechanical ventilation for 3 hours. Heart-lung blocks were harvested after retrograde pulmonary hypothermic flush with Perfadex. Left lung grafts were randomly transplanted into 12 weight-matched recipient animals. Animals were divided into 2 groups: control (standard mechanical ventilation, n = 6) and PLV (partial liquid ventilation, n = 6). Forty-five minutes after transplantation, the animals in the PLV group received perfluorodecalin (15 ml/kg) via orotracheal tube. All animals received volume-controlled ventilation (FIO2) 1.0, PEEP 5 cm H(2)O) over 6 consecutive hours. Thereafter, blood-gas analysis, ventilatory mechanics and hemodynamics were registered at 30-minute intervals. After 6 hours of reperfusion the animals were killed and the transplanted lungs were extracted to obtain the wet/dry weight ratio., Results: There were significant differences in pulmonary arterial pressure, which were higher in control group animals (p < 0.009). The control animals also showed higher arterial PaO(2) than those in the PLV group (p < 0.00001), but lower PaCO(2) (p < 0.008). The peak and plateau pressures were higher in the PLV group (p < 0.00001). Neither static compliance nor wet/dry weight ratios were different in between groups., Conclusions: PLV with perfluorodecalin yields functional results compatible with life in this model. Nonetheless, pulmonary gas exchange and mechanics were superior after reperfusion in animals given conventional mechanical ventilation up to 6 hours after left lung allotransplantation.

A simple high-performance liquid chromatographic method is described for the quantitative analysis of ciprofloxacin in human plasma. Following protein precipitation from plasma by means of 6% perchloric acid, the upper layer which contains the analyte and the internal standard lomefloxacin, was analysed on a reverse phase column LiChrospher 60 RP-select B (5 microm) (EcoCART 125-3) with ultraviolet detection at 280 nm. The mobile phase was acetic acid 5%-methanol-acetonitrile (90:5:5, v/v/v). The assay was linear for ciprofloxacin over the concentration range of 0.050 to 6.00 microg ml(-1). The limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.050 microg ml(-1). The method was successfully applied to a bioavailability study with five different ciprofloxacin formulations.
