The simulation of the predissociation spectrum of the Na2 23Πg∼33Πg←b3Πu (v=14,J=14) transition, observed earlier with the Perturbation Facilitated Optical–Optical Double Resonance (PFOODR) experimental method, is done within the Optimizer project with our Split-operator computational package using Padé approximations for all functions involved in the model. This simulation reproduces the experimental spectrum satisfactory well. The parameters of the model functions involved in the simulations are determined and reported. A brief description of our computational methods and programs is presented.

This work focuses on a very narrow region in the quaternary system Na2O-P2O5-SiO2-ZrO2 to explore the occasionally proposed deficiency in zirconium and oxygen content of Na+ super-ionic conductor (NaSICON) materials. In addition, this region is known for the formation of glass-ceramics, but a systematic study of such materials has not been carried out yet. For this purpose, 2 series of compositions were defined and synthesized: Na3.4Zr2-3x/4Si2.4-x/4P0.6+x/4O12-11x/8 and Na3.4Zr2-3x/4Si2.4+x/4P0.6+1.5x/4O12-x/16. They only differ in the silicate and phosphate content. In the first series the molar content is constant, nSi + nP = 3. The latter series allows an excess of the 2 cations to meet the composition Na3.1Zr1.55Si2.3P0.7O11 or alternatively re-written as Na3.4Zr1.7Si2.52P0.77Ol2, which was formerly regarded as a superior material to the frequently reported composition Na3Zr2Si2POl2.Several characterization techniques were applied to better understand the relationships between phase formation, processing, and properties of the obtained glass ceramics in the context of the quasi-quaternary phase diagram. The investigations gave clear evidence that a glass phase is progressively formed with increasing x. Therefore, compounds with x > 0.2 have to be regarded as glass-ceramic composites. The resulting NaSICON materials revealed a very limited Zr deficiency with charge compensation by Na ions and a non-detectable amount of oxygen vacancies verified by neutron scattering and atomistic simulations.Hence, this work is the first systematic investigation of pretended Zr-deficient NaSICON materials, which clearly show the chemistry of a 2-phase region. The 2 investigated series are directed toward a region that is orthogonal to the series Na3Zr3-ySi2PyO11.5+y/2 reported in the first part of this series of publications.

Summary: Background: Governments globally aim to reduce the intake of unhealthy foods. Many policies exist that aim to address foods high in saturated fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) but the identification of ultra-processed foods (UPF) have presented a greater challenge due to the lack of an appropriate policy definition. To support policymakers, we provide approaches that can support governments to identify both HFSS foods and UPFs. Methods: Four approaches combining elements of UPF definitions (i.e., presence of additives) and HFSS definitions were compared attempting to simplify and standardize the identification of less healthy products. Nationally representative food purchase data from NielsenIQ linked with nutrition facts label data were used to examine the mean proportion of product volume purchased by US households to be targeted. Resumen: Introducción: El gradiente de sodio durante las sesiones es uno de los factores clave en el balance de este ion en los pacientes en hemodiálisis; sin embargo, hasta la aparición de los nuevos monitores con módulos de sodio, las diferencias entre el sodio prescrito y el medido han sido poco estudiadas. El objetivo del presente estudio fue comparar el impacto del cambio del monitor 5008 Cordiax al nuevo monitor 6008 Cordiax sobre los resultados de la conductividad real medida, del sodio plasmático inicial y final. Material y métodos: Se incluyeron 106 pacientes en hemodiálisis. Cada paciente recibió dos sesiones de diálisis en las que solo se varió el monitor. Las variables recogidas fueron: el concentrado, sodio y bicarbonato prescritos, conductividad real, sodio plasmático inicial y final medidos por dialisancia iónica y se calculó el cambio de la concentración de sodio plasmático durante el tratamiento o delta de sodio (ΔPNa). Resultados: El cambio de monitor de diálisis mostró pequeñas diferencias, aunque significativas, en el sodio plasmático inicial (138,14 mmol/L con 5008 vs. 138,81 mmol/L con 6008) y final (139,58 mmol/L vs. 140,97 mmol/L), así como en la conductividad real obtenida (13,97 vs. 14,10 mS/cm). El ΔPNa también aumento significativamente. Conclusión: El cambio de monitor 5008 a 6008 se asocia a un aumento en la conductividad, un sodio plasmático más elevado y un incremento en el ΔPNa. El conocer y confirmar este cambio permitirá individualizar la prescripción de sodio, evitar posibles efectos indeseables y podría ser el estudio preliminar para explorar el nuevo biosensor de control de sodio incorporado en la nueva generación de monitores. Abstract: Introduction: The sodium gradient during hemodialysis sessions is one of the key factors in sodium balance in patients with dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease; however, until the appearance of the new monitors with sodium modules, the differences between prescribed and measured sodium have been understudied. The present study aimed to compare the impact on the measured conductivity and the initial and final plasma sodium after changing the 5008 Cordiax to the new 6008 Cordiax monitor. Material and methods: 106 patients on hemodialysis were included. Each patient underwent 2 dialysis sessions in which only the monitor was varied. The variables collected were dialysate, sodium and bicarbonate prescribed, real conductivity, initial and final plasma sodium measured, and the calculated sodium gradient (ΔPNa). Results: The change of dialysis monitor showed small but statistically significant differences in the initial (138.14 mmol/L with 5008 vs. 138.81 mmol/L with 6008) and final plasma sodium (139.58 mmol/L vs. 140.97 mmol/L), as well as in the actual conductivity obtained (13.97 vs. 14.1 mS/cm). The ΔPNa also increased significantly. Conclusión: The change from 5008 to 6008 monitor is associated with increased conductivity, leading the patient to end the sessions with higher plasma sodium and ΔPNa. Knowing and confirming this change will allow us to individualize the sodium prescription and avoid possible undesirable effects. It could be the preliminary study to explore the new sodium biosensor incorporated into the new generation of monitors.

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to investigate the role of Na+ on ruminal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) absorption and barrier function when isolated ruminal epithelium was exposed to high and low pH ex vivo. Nine Holstein steer calves (322 ± 50.9 kg of body weight) consuming 7.05 ± 1.5 kg dry matter of a total mixed ration were euthanized and ruminal tissue was collected from the caudal-dorsal blind sac. Tissues were mounted between 2 halves of Ussing chambers (3.14 cm2) and exposed to buffers that contained low (10 mM) or high (140 mM) Na+ with low (6.2) or high (7.4) mucosal pH. The same buffer solutions were used on the serosal side except that pH was maintained at 7.4. Buffers used to evaluate SCFA uptake contained bicarbonate to determine total uptake or excluded bicarbonate and included nitrate to determine noninhibitable uptake. Bicarbonate-dependent uptake was calculated as the difference between the total and noninhibitable uptake. Acetate (25 mM) and butyrate (25 mM) were spiked with 2-3H-acetate and 1-14C-butyrate, respectively, and were then added to the mucosal side, incubated for 1 min, and tissues were analyzed to evaluate rates of SCFA uptake. Tissue conductance (Gt) and the mucosal-to-serosal flux of 1-3H-mannitol were used to assess barrier function. There were no Na+ × pH interactions for butyrate or acetate uptake. Decreasing mucosal pH from 7.4 to 6.2 increased total acetate and butyrate uptake, and bicarbonate-dependent acetate uptake. Flux of 1-3H-mannitol was not affected by treatment. However, high Na+ concentration reduced Gt and prevented an increase in Gt from flux period 1 to flux period 2. The results of this study indicate that although providing more Na+ to the ruminal epithelium does not affect SCFA uptake or mannitol flux, it may help stabilize tissue integrity.

Interaction of chromium (Cr) metal ions with sodium (Na) and calcium (Ca) and their effect on the different plant enzymes in spinach were evaluated in a glass house experiment. Multi-metal toxicity hampers the crop's growth and affects the uptake kinetics of minerals and other substances from root to edible part. In this experiment, three levels of Cr (0, 50 and 100 mg/kg), Na levels (0, 40, 80 mM), and Ca levels (0, 2, 4 mM) were applied to Indian vertisol. The spinach crop was grown with recommended agronomic practices. Fully tender leaves were taken to measure stress enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase) of metals; and found to have a significant effect on metal toxicity in spinach crop. Background: In Japanese cardiovascular (CV) high-risk patients, the ESPRIT (Evaluation of Sodium Intake for the Prediction of Cardiovascular Events in Japanese High-risk Patients) study showed that high sodium excretion (≥4.0 g/day) was associated with a composite CV events of heart failure (HF) hospitalization, acute coronary syndrome, cerebrovascular events, and CV deaths. In this context, the sodium-to-creatinine (Na/Cr) ratio in spot urine was found to be significantly associated with HF hospitalizations. Since a stable potassium balance plays a particularly relevant role for CV patients, this post-hoc study was designed to investigate the extent to which consideration of the sodium-to-potassium (Na/K) ratio represents a better predictor of HF hospitalizations in the ESPRIT study population. Methods: This is a post-hoc analysis of a previously reported ESPRIT study (n = 520, 60 HF hospitalizations). In the search for cutting-edge energy storage technologies, alkali ion batteries (AIBs) development has accelerated significantly. Due to its outstanding qualities, indium sulfide (In2S3) has emerged as a potential contender among the many anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). This review paper thoroughly examines In2S3-based materials for AIBs, placing particular emphasis on their importance in the context of environmentally friendly energy storage technologies. We explore In2S3's distinctive characteristics, such as its high theoretical capacity, improved rate capability, cyclability, adjustable bandgap features, and environmental friendliness, which make it suited for AIBs. The development in material engineering, nanostructuring, composite materials, and novel electrode topologies is also highlighted as we discuss current developments in In2S3-based electrodes. In2S3-based materials provide a compelling path towards a cleaner and greener energy future, opening the way for scalable and sustainable energy storage systems thanks to their outstanding features and continuous advances. Further material engineering, improved knowledge of degradation mechanisms, exploring synergistic composite materials, and cutting-edge characterization techniques are all part of the future outlook for In2S3-based materials in AIBs. Due to their large theoretical capacity and advantageous electrochemical characteristics, materials based on In2S3 have demonstrated promise as anodes in AIBs. Researchers can maximize the performance of In2S3 in AIBs by concentrating on these factors, which will progress the development of effective and environmentally friendly energy storage technologies.

In this study, we propose an effective strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of a P2-Na0.67Mn0.75Ni0.25O2 (P2-MNO) cathode material for Na-ion batteries based on MgO surface coating. The MgO coating, with a thickness of ∼20–50 nm, is obtained by means of a facile wet-chemistry approach followed by heat treatment carried out at comparatively low temperatures (400–500 °C) in order to avoid possible Mg doping in the bulk of the P2-MNO. Detailed electrochemical investigations demonstrate improved electrochemical performance of the MgO-coated material (M-P2-MNO) in comparison to pristine bare one at both room and elevated (40 °C) temperatures. Operando differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy (DEMS) demonstrate that the MgO coating is effective in suppressing unwanted gas evolution due to side reactions thus stabilizing the cathode/electrolyte interface.

Resumen: Objetivo: Resaltar la importancia durante el periodo neonatal de las alteraciones del sodio que pueden llevar a situaciones extremas que pongan en compromiso la vida del paciente y supongan un desafío terapéutico. Casos clínicos: Presentamos 2 casos con alteraciones extremas del sodio.1°: Recién nacido a término de 17 días con deshidratación hipernatrémica: pérdida de peso del 32% respecto al nacimiento. Cifra máxima de sodio 195 mmol/L. Fallo multiorgánico con necesidad de soporte en oxigenación por membrana extracorpórea (ECMO) y hemodiafiltración.2°: Recién nacido prematuro de 31 semanas con cifra de sodio de 95 mmol/L a los 15 días de vida sin otra sintomatología acompañante. Precisa reposición hidroelectrolítica lenta intravenosa. Resultado: Buena evolución clínica. El caso 1 presenta un desarrollo psicomotor adecuado (actualmente 18 meses). El caso 2 presenta a los 7 años parálisis cerebral con diplejía espástica. Desde nacimiento presentaba lesiones compatibles con leucomalacia periventricular. Conclusiones: El periodo neonatal es probablemente el periodo de la vida con mayor riesgo de presentar alteraciones hidroelectrolíticas. Es importante realizar un seguimiento estrecho de la pérdida ponderal en los recién nacidos en los primeros días de vida para prevenir la deshidratación hipernatrémica, así como monitorizar los niveles de sodio en los recién nacidos prematuros. Las alteraciones severas de la natremia son una urgencia vital que puede requerir tratamientos avanzados para conseguir una supervivencia con mínimas secuelas. Abstract: Aim: To highlight the importance of sodium changes during the neonatal period, which can lead to extreme situations that pose therapeutic challenges and compromise patient lives. Case report: We present 2 cases with extreme sodium alterations.1st: A 17 day old full term newborn with hypernatremic dehydration: 32% of weight loss compared to birth weight and maximum sodium of 195 mmol/L. He suffered multiorgan failure requiring ECMO support and haemodiafiltration.2nd: A 31 week premature newborn with a sodium level of 95 mmol/L at 15 days of life without other accompanying symptoms. He required slow intravenous hydroelectrolytic replacement. Results: Good clinical evolution. Case one presents adequate psychomotor development (currently 18 months). Case two presents cerebral palsy with spastic diplegia at 7 years of age. From birth she presented cerebral injuries compatible with periventricular leukomalacia. Conclusions: The neonatal period is probably the period of life with the highest risk for hydroelectrolytic alterations. It is important to perform a strict weight control in newborns during their first days of life to prevent hypernatremic dehydration. It is also important to monitor sodium levels in preterm infants. Severe changes in natremia are a vital emergency that may require advanced treatments in order to achieve survival with minimal sequelae.

Background: Hypertension is highly prevalent in India; however, little is known about the dietary intakes of those living with hypertension, particularly in rural areas. The primary aim was to assess the dietary intakes of individuals living in rural India with self-reported history of hypertension. As secondary analyses, we explored the dietary impact of a salt substitute in this population group. Materials and methods: This study used data from a large randomised controlled trial conducted in seven villages across rural India. Participants received either regular salt (100% sodium chloride) or the salt substitute (70% sodium chloride/30% potassium chloride) to replace all home salt use. Dietary intake at baseline and end-of-trial was assessed using 24-h dietary recalls. A range of dietary outcomes were assessed including energy intake, macronutrient intake and overall diet quality according to the Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI). Results: A total of 454 participants were included in the analysis. At baseline, mean (SE) energy intakes in regular salt group and salt substitute group were similar at 5240 (110) kJ/day and 5120 (106) kJ/day, respectively. This was largely attributable to intakes of carbohydrates (74.4% of total energy intakes for regular salt group vs 75.4% for the salt substitute group) followed by total fat (15.8% vs 15.4%) and protein (10.4% vs 10.3%). Both groups also had similar AHEI scores at baseline, with mean (SE) total scores equating to 33.0 (0.4) (out of a total 90) for the regular salt group and 32.7 (0.4) for the salt substitute group. Both groups received lowest AHEI scores across the following components: vegetables, fruit and wholegrains. At baseline, the mean (SE) intakes of sodium across the regular salt and salt substitute groups were similar at 2349 (67) mg/day and 2396 (64) mg/day, respectively. In the salt substitute group, there was a significant reduction in total sodium intakes over time (−264 mg/day, 95% CI, −442 to −85), driven by the use of the salt substitute. Conclusion: This study found individuals with hypertension living in rural India had poor dietary intakes, including low intakes of fruits, vegetables and wholegrains, and high intakes of sodium. Salt substitutes may be an effective strategy for reducing sodium intake in this population group.

Climate change is considered one of the major contributing factors to soil salinization, leading to land degradation. Several alternative organic waste materials are proposed for agricultural sustainability. Strawberry (Fragaria ananassa cv. Tioga) is one of the most consumed crop plants on a global scale due to its numerous economic and industrial benefits. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to understand how varying concentrations of diluted salt water (0%, 10%, 40%, 80%, 100%) affected the growth and physiology of Fragaria ananassa cv. Tioga. Our results indicated that shoot fresh weight (SFW), shoot dry weight (SDW), root fresh weight (RFW), root dry weight (RDW), leaf area, fruits weight, fruits per plants, relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll a and b significantly decreased in salt-stressed strawberry plants as compared to control plants. Moreover, salinity stress increased the malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), sodium (Na) content, SOD and APX activity. However, the application of dry waster of tea leaves (DWT) and dry waste of rose petals (DWR) led to improvements in chlorophyll content, RWC and potassium (K) content, antioxidant enzymes activity, and fruit yield of strawberry plants. In comparison to DWT, the best outcome was observed in plants treated with DWR, suggesting a new and eco-friendly strategy to increase crop yields under salt stress in commercial production. In conclusion, DWT and DWR treatments helps in the improvement of strawberries grown under salt stress conditions and increases their tolerance to salt stress.

Infrared spectroscopy, temperature programmed reaction mass spectrometry (TP-reaction/MS), and catalyst testing were used to investigate alkali promotion of dehydrogenation selectivity during formaldehyde steam reforming (FSR) on Pt/m-ZrO2. In a preferred pathway, formaldehyde reacts with water forming hydrogen and formate, followed by forward formate decomposition to CO2 and H2. Alkali-doping of 2 wt% Pt/m-ZrO2 increases catalyst basicity, which weakens the formate CH bond promoting formate dehydrogenation / decarboxylation. Promotion by alkali in FSR was observed through a formate ν(CH) band shift to lower wavenumbers in infrared spectroscopy, and through a decrease in the normal isotope effect in switching from H- to D-labeled formaldehyde in TP-reaction/MS.

In this study, water treatment sludge was investigated through batch modes for the treatment of saline water to meet livestock drinking consents. The water quality was assessed using water quality index (WQI).The kinetic data was best described by the Pseudo – Second – Order model and the equilibrium isotherm by the Freundlich model. The maximum removal efficiency was 51.5 ± 0.65%, 22.6 ± 0.5% and 100% for Sulphates (SO42−), Chloride (Cl−), and Nitrates (NO3−), respectively. The maximum removal efficiency of sodium (Na) and nickel (Ni) was 100% each at 0.4g dose and that of manganese (Mn) was 87.5% at 1.2g dose. The effect of temperature revealed that the adsorption capacity for anions, decreased with increasing temperature, whereas for the cations the adsorption capacities increased with increasing temperature. The water treatment sludge reduced the total dissolved solids (TDS) and electrical conductivity (EC) from the initial values of 19600 mgL−1 and 38900 μScm−1 to 98 mgL−1 and 1728 μScm−1,respectively. The Water Quality Indices were 37.35 and 7.57, before and after treatment, respectively. Water treatment sludge can be used for the pre-treatment process before using conventional treatment technologies. Pilot scale investigations should be conducted before field trials.

الملخص: أهداف البحث: الأمراض المعدية سبب شائع للأمراض والوفيات بين الناس. الخلل بتوازن الكهارل يحدث بكثرة لدى مرضى الأمراض المعدية. هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى معرفة الخلل بتوازن الكهارل لدى المرضى المصابين بأمراض معدية بالمستشفيات. طرق البحث: فى هذه الدراسةالاستعاديةتم إدراج 283مريضا متوسط أعمارهم 36.48 ± 18.86 سنة؛يتألفوا من 127 (53.4٪) من الذكور و111 (46.6٪) من الإناث. أجريت هذه الدراسه بمستشفى الملك عبد العزيز الجامعي في جدة، المملكة العربية السعودية في الفترة من سبتمبر إلى ديسمبر2020. شملت الدراسة جميع المرضى المقيمين المصابين بأمراض معدية في المستشفيات. تم جمع وتسجيل البيانات الديمغرافية، والأمراض المصاحبة وتشخيص الأمراض المعدية من ملفات المرضى. وتم جمع مستويات المصل من الكهارل (الكلوريد والبوتاسيوم والصوديوم)، واليوريا والكرياتينين التي يتم قياسها في وقت الإدخال للمستشفى (الفترة 1)، وأثناء الاستشفاء في المستشفى بعد التشخيص (الفترة 2) وعند الخروج من المستشفى (الفترة 3). وتم مقارنة المستويات خلال الفترات المختلفة. النتائج: كانت أغلب الأمراض المعدية عبارة عن التهابات فيروسية (63.4%)، في حين كانت الأمراض المصاحبة مرض البول السكري (7.1%). ووجد ارتفاع الكلوريد فى المصل بشكل ملحوظ من الفترة 1 إلى الفترة 3، وارتفع الصوديوم بشكل ملحوظ بين الفترة 1 والفترة 2 والفترة 3، بينما انخفضت اليوريا بشكل ملحوظ بين الفترة 1 وكل من الفترة 2 والفترة 3. وانخفض الكرياتينين بشكل ملحوظ بين الفترة 1 وكل من الفترة 2 والفترة 3، وكذلك بين الفترة 2 والفترة 3. كان عدد المرضى الذين يعانون من انخفاض مستويات الكلوريد والصوديوم في الغالب خلال الفترة الأولى بينما أولئك الذين كانت لديهم مستويات منخفضة من البوتاسيوم كانوا في الغالب في الفترة الثانية. الاستنتاجات: كان انتشار اختلال توازن الكهارل في مرضى الأمراض المعدية بالمستشفيات في مستشفى الملك عبد العزيز الجامعي بجدة مرتفعا خاصة عند الدخول للمستشفى وأثناء الاستشفاء بالمستشفى. ولذلك يلزم إجراء مزيد من الدراسات لمعرفة العوامل المساهمة المرتبطة باختلال توازن الكهارل أثناء الاستشفاء بالمستشفى. Abstract: Objectives: Infectious diseases are the common cause of morbidity and mortality among humans. Electrolyte imbalance occurs frequently in patients with infectious diseases. This study aims to identify electrolyte imbalances in hospitalised patients with infectious diseases. Methods: Two hundred and eighty-three patients with age mean 36.48 ± 18.86 years, consisting of 127 (53.4%) males, 111 (46.6%) females, enrolled in a retrospective cohort study carried out at the King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, KSA from September to December 2020. All hospitalised patients with infectious diseases were included. Demographic data, comorbidity, and diagnosis were collected from patients’ sheets. Serum levels of electrolytes (chloride, potassium, sodium), urea, and creatinine were collected at admission (period 1), during hospital stay (period 2), and at discharge (period 3). Levels were compared during different periods. Results: Most infectious diseases were viral infections (63.4%), while comorbidity was diabetes mellitus (7.1%). Most patients undergoing cardiac surgery are at a greater risk of electrolyte disorders, which are important causes for ventricular and supra-ventricular arrhythmias as well as various other complications. Early identification of the common electrolyte disorder through serial monitoring is crucial during post-cardiac surgery periods.The aim was to assess the factors associated with major electrolyte disorders following cardiac surgery. A facility-based retrospective survey was conducted among 192 randomly selected patient records from a total of 352 cardiac surgical patients who underwent cardiac surgery between January 1st, 2016 to December 31st, 2020. The survey was conducted from February 01 to April 28, 2021. A structured data collection checklist tested for its reliability and content validity was adopted from similar studies to gather data. Data was entered and analyzed using statistical software, SPSS version 26.0. Cu/CHA and sodium-promoted Cu/CHA catalysts were prepared and applied to catalyze NH3-SCR reaction. Also, the effect of phosphorus poisoning on the catalytic performance of these two catalysts were explored. Compared with Cu/CHA catalyst, sodium-promoted Cu/CHA catalyst presented better catalytic performance, which was attributed to the optimized distribution of copper active sites. Moreover, it was proved that sodium ions as sacrificial sites could effectively protect copper active ions and improve the phosphorus poisoning resistance of the sodium-promoted Cu/CHA catalyst.

Resumen: Objetivo: La ingesta excesiva de sal se asocia a mayores cifras de tensión arterial y prevalencia de enfermedades cardiovasculares. La OMS recomienda consumir menos de 5 g/día de sal (equivalente a 2 g de Na+/día). Identificar alimentos y comportamientos con mayor contribución al exceso de aporte facilitaría el consejo dietético preventivo. Diseño: Estudio observacional. Sitio: Centro de Salud Urbano en Cáceres. Medidas principales: Estimamos el consumo de sal mediante dos cuestionarios de frecuencia de consumo de alimentos (CFA), uno genérico y otro con alimentos con elevado contenido en Na+, y encuesta recordatoria de 24 h. Empleamos el programa Evalfinut para la valoración nutricional de la dieta. Analizamos correlaciones entre ingesta estimada de sal y eliminación de sodio en orina de 24 h (gold standard). Resultados: El 92% de la muestra presenta consumos superiores a las recomendaciones con ingestas equivalentes a 9,5 g/día de sal (3,7 g/día de Na+). Cuando la ingesta de sodio se determina por el cociente Na+/K+, el 79,54% tiene ingestas elevadas. La eliminación de sodio sigue una tendencia ligeramente creciente con el IMC. La percepción de consumo de sal es baja, el 56,3% lo considera «adecuado»; el 32,4% añade sal a los alimentos una vez servidos. Los CFA infraestiman la ingesta de Na+ y encuestas dirigidas aportan valores más elevados. La correlación entre CFA y eliminación urinaria de Na+ es débil. Conclusión: Debemos reducir la ingesta de sal aumentando la percepción del consumo, mejorando el conocimiento sobre el contenido de sal en alimentos e identificando a pacientes diana del consejo sanitario. Abstract: Objective: Excessive salt intake is associated with higher levels of AHT and prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. WHO recommends consuming less than 5 g/day of salt (equivalent to 2 g Na+/day). Identifying foods and behaviours with greater contribution to excess intake would facilitate preventive dietary advice. Design: Observational study. Site: Urban Health Center in Cáceres. Main measurements: We estimated salt consumption using two food consumption frequency (FFQ) questionnaires, one generic and one with high Na+ content, and a 24 h follow-up survey. We use the Evalfinut program for nutritional evaluation of the diet. We analyzed correlations between estimated salt intake and 24-h urine sodium elimination (gold standard). Results: 92% of the population had consumption higher than the recommendations with intakes equivalent to 9.5 g/day of salt (3.7 g/d of Na+). When sodium intake is determined by the Na+/K+ ratio, 79.54% have high intakes. Sodium elimination follows a slightly increasing trend with BMI. The perception of salt consumption is low, 56.3% consider it “adequate”. 32.4% add salt to food once served. FFQ underestimate Na+ intake and targeted surveys provide higher values. The correlation between FFQ and Na+ urinary elimination is weak. Conclusion: We must reduce salt intake by increasing the perception of consumption, improving knowledge about the salt content in food and identifying target patients of the health council.

The Serra da Calçada Mountain (Minas Gerais State, Brazil) hosts a natural grassland with high biodiversity and endemism, locally known as campo rupestre, which grows over hematite and quartzite outcrops, protecting several headwaters. However, this mountain has been severely threatened by anthropogenic fires and its restoration has been challenged by the lack of knowledge on the effect of fire on plant species and soil fertility. Thus, this study aimed to assess a burned campo rupestre site after 1 year concerning plant biodiversity and soil properties as compared to a preserved site. Aside from the high plant biodiversity, the preserved site (with no fire history) showed a high natural soil fertility, particularly regarding soil organic matter (SOM): ∼3.48%, Cationic Exchange Capacity (CEC): ∼8.4 meq/100g, soil ammonium (NH4+-N): ∼11 ppm and soil phosphorus (P): ∼6.9 mg/Kg. However, the fire reduced not only the plant species composition, abundance, richness and biodiversity, but also disrupted the natural soil fertility. There was a change in N chemical species from ammonium to nitrate as well as an increase in sodium (Na) content, in addition to a depletion of SOM and CEC. The variations of nitrogen chemical species, sodium, SOM, CEC and soil moisture explained 79% of the changes in plant composition as revealed by the Mantel matrix permutation test. Increased soil nitrate and sodium were considered the main factors determining changes in vegetation composition after fire. Therefore, fires should be strictly avoided for the management of the campo rupestre grassland, and for the rehabilitation purposes, the improvement of SOM and ammonium in detriment of nitrate is recommended.

Sodium (Na), a beneficial mineral element, stimulates plant growth through osmotic adjustment. Previous studies focused on Na content at the individual or species level, however, it is hard to link to ecosystem functions without exploring the characteristics (content, density, and storage) of Na at the community level. We conducted grid-plot sampling of different plant organs in 2040 natural plant communities on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) to comprehensively characterize community-level Na on a regional scale. The Na content was 0.57, 0.09, 0.07, and 0.71 mg g -1 in leaves, branches, trunks, and roots, respectively. Across biomes Na content was higher in deserts under drought stress. Oxygen partial pressure, radiation, precipitation, soil Na supply, and temperature significantly affected the spatial variation in Na content. Furthermore, we accurately simulated the spatial variation in Na density and produced a highly precise 1 km × 1 km spatial map of plant Na density on the TP using random forest algorithm, which demonstrated higher Na density in the southeast of TP. The total plant Na storage on the TP was estimated as 111.80 × 10 4  t. Introduction: Hypernatremia is a common problem among patients with severe burn injuries and seems to be associated with an unfavorable clinical outcome. The current study was designed to evaluate the impact of antibiotics with a high proportion of sodium on this phenomenon., Methods: All admissions to our burn center from 01/2017 till 06/2023 were retrospectively screened. All patients aged >18 years which suffered from at least 20 % total body surface burned area (TBSA) 2nd degree burn injuries or more than 10 % TBSA when including areas of 3rd degree burn injuries were included. The course of the serum Na-level was analyzed from two days before till two days after the start of the antibiotic treatment. Ampicillin/sulbactam, cefazoline and piperacillin/tazobactam were classified as high-dose sodium antibiotics (HPS), meropenem and vancomycin as low-dose sodium antibiotics (LPS)., Results: 120 patients met the inclusion criteria. A significant increase of the serum Na was detectable in the HPS group on day 1 and 2 after initiating the antibiotic treatment (n = 64, day 1: 2,1 (SD 4,18) mmol/l, p < 0,001; day 2: 2,44 (SD 5,26) mmol/l, p < 0,001) while no significant changes were detectable in the LPS group (n = 21, day 1: 0,18 (SD 7,45) mmol/l, p = 0,91; day 2: -0,27 (SD 7,44) mmol/l, p = 0,87). This effect was further aggravated when analyzing only the HPS patients with a TBSA ≥30 % (n = 33; day 1: 2,93 (SD 4,68) mmol/l, p = 0,002; day 2: 3,41 (SD 5,9) mmol/l, p = 0,003)., Conclusion: The amount of sodium in antibiotics seems to have a relevant impact on the serum Na during the early stages of severe burn injury. Background: Spot urine collection offers a convenient alternative to the more cumbersome 24-h urine collection. However, the widely recognized estimation models, such as Tanaka and International Cooperative Study on Salt, Other Factors, and Blood Pressure (INTERSALT), have not been adequately adapted for widespread use in the general Chinese population., Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the precision of the Tanaka and INTERSALT calibration models, alongside a locally Zhejiang Province-formulated model, in predicting 24-h urinary sodium (24-hUNa) excretion among the Chinese population., Methods: The study comprised 1424 participants, aged 18-69 y, who provided both comprehensive 24-h urine and fasting morning urine samples. The researchers assessed the accuracy of the measured 24-hUNa against the estimates obtained from the Tanaka, INTERSALT, and Zhejiang models. This evaluation was conducted at both population and individual levels, employing a range of statistical techniques, including bias analysis, correlation coefficients, intraclass correlation coefficients, receiver operating characteristic curves, Bland-Altman plots, as well as relative and absolute difference calculations, and misclassification rates., Results: The measured average 24-hUNa excretion was found to be 165.7 ± 71.5 mmol/24-h. Notably, there was a significant deviation between the estimated and measured values for the Tanaka-adjusted model [-11.7 mmol, 95% confidence interval (CI): -16.7, -6.7 mmol/24-h], indicating a statistically significant difference. In contrast, the deviations for the INTERSALT-adjusted model (0.6 mmol, 95% CI: -4.2, 5.4 mmol/24-h) and the Zhejiang model (0.2 mmol, 95% CI: -4.6, 5.0 mmol/24-h) were nonsignificant. The correlation coefficients for the models were 0.303, 0.398, and 0.391, respectively, with the INTERSALT-adjusted and Zhejiang models showing superior performance at the population level., Conclusions: The 3 evaluation models may serve as effective, low-burden alternatives for assessing urinary sodium levels in the population. Around the world, groundwater salinity levels are increasing in coastal areas, as a result of its systematic overexploitation for domestic, agricultural and industrial demand and potentially due to climate change manifestations (such as, sea level rise). We hypothesized that the groundwater quality of many Mediterranean coastal areas is already being perturbed, especially for water salinity, depending on the groundwater distance from the seafront. The objectives of this study were: i) to evaluate the magnitude and temporal variance of drinking water sodium (Na) as a metric of salt intake used for public health purposes using drinking water data in Cyprus; and ii) to examine the degree of Na enrichment in drinking water as defined by the seawater coastline distance of each sampling point. Open access governmental data of drinking water Na (n = 3304), daily max ambient air temperature and total rainfall were obtained for the period of 2009-2020 from governmental repositories. Linear mixed-effect regression models of drinking water Na with unsupervised covariance matrix were used. After adjusting for temperature and rainfall data, there was a significant annual increase in drinking water Na levels over time (beta = 0.01; 95 % CI: 0.00, 0.02; p = 0.02) for the coastal areas (<10 km from coastline, cutoff used by the EU Environment Agency), but this was not the case for non-coastal areas (>10 km distance from coastline). The distance of each sampling point from the coastline in Cyprus was negatively associated with drinking water Na in coastal areas (beta = -0.04, 95%CI: -0.06, -0.01; p = 0.002); this was not the case for non-coastal areas. Purpose: 23 Na MRI can be used to quantify in-vivo tissue sodium concentration (TSC), but the inherently low 23 Na signal leads to long scan times and/or noisy or low-resolution images. Reconstruction algorithms such as compressed sensing (CS) have been proposed to mitigate low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR); although, these can result in unnatural images, suboptimal denoising and long processing times. Recently, machine learning has been increasingly used to denoise 1 H MRI acquisitions; however, this approach typically requires large volumes of high-quality training data, which is not readily available for 23 Na MRI. Here, we propose using 1 H data to train a denoising convolutional neural network (CNN), which we subsequently demonstrate on prospective 23 Na images of the calf., Methods: 1893 1 H fat-saturated transverse slices of the knee from the open-source fastMRI dataset were used to train denoising CNNs for different levels of noise. Synthetic low SNR images were generated by adding gaussian noise to the high-quality 1 H k-space data before reconstruction to create paired training data. For prospective testing, 23 Na images of the calf were acquired in 10 healthy volunteers with a total of 150 averages over ten minutes, which were used as a reference throughout the study. From this data, images with fewer averages were retrospectively reconstructed using a non-uniform fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) as well as CS, with the NUFFT images subsequently denoised using the trained CNN., Results: CNNs were successfully applied to 23 Na images reconstructed with 50, 40 and 30 averages. Muscle and skin apparent TSC quantification from CNN-denoised images were equivalent to those from CS images, with <0.9 mM bias compared to reference values. Estimated SNR was significantly higher in CNN-denoised images compared to NUFFT, CS and reference images. Quantitative edge sharpness was equivalent for all images. Background: High-sodium and low-potassium intakes are associated with a higher risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, but there are limited data on the circulating metabolomics profiles of 24-h urinary sodium and potassium excretions in free-living individuals., Objectives: We aimed to characterize the metabolomics signatures of a high-sodium and low-potassium diet in a cross-sectional study., Methods: In 1028 healthy older adults from the Women's and Men's Lifestyle Validation Studies, we investigated the association of habitual sodium and potassium intakes measured by 2 to 4 24-h urine samples with plasma metabolites (quantified using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry) and metabolomic pathways. Our primary exposures were energy-adjusted 24-h urinary sodium excretion, potassium excretion, and sodium-to-potassium ratio, calculated based on energy expenditure derived from the doubly labeled water method. We then assessed the partial correlations of their metabolomics scores, derived from elastic net regressions, with cardiometabolic biomarkers., Results: Higher sodium excretion was associated with 38 metabolites including higher piperine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and C5:1 carnitine. In pathway analysis, higher sodium excretion was associated with enhanced biotin and propanoate metabolism and enhanced degradation of lysine and branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). Metabolites associated with higher potassium and lower sodium-to-potassium ratio included quinic acid and proline-betaine. After adjusting for confounding factors, the metabolomics score for sodium-to-potassium ratio positively correlated with fasting insulin (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient ρ = 0.27), C-peptide (ρ = 0.30), and triglyceride (ρ = 0.46), and negatively with adiponectin (ρ = -0.40), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (ρ = -0.42)., Conclusions: We discovered metabolites and metabolomics pathways associated with a high-sodium diet, including metabolites related to biotin, propanoate, lysine, and BCAA pathways. Fibrous erionite is the only zeolite classified as Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Carcinogenesis induced by erionite is thought to involve several factors as biopersistence, the iron role and cation exchange processes. To better understand these mechanisms, a detailed investigation at the micro scale was performed, collecting elemental information on iron and cation release and their distribution in biological systems by synchrotron micro-X-ray fluorescence mapping (SR-micro-XRF) and synchrotron micro-X-ray absorption spectroscopy (SR-micro-XANES) at the TwinMic beamline (Elettra synchrotron) and at the ID21 beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). By microscopy and chemical mapping, highly detailed maps of the chemical and morphological interaction of biological systems with fibres could be produced. In detail, THP-1 cell line derived macrophages, used as in vitro model, were analysed during erionite-Na phagocytosis at different time intervals, after single dose exposure. For comparison, cellular fluorescent probes were also used to evaluate the intracellular free sodium and calcium concentrations. Synchrotron analyses visualised the spatial distribution of both fibre and mineral particle associated metals during the phagocytosis, describing the mechanism of internalisation of erionite-Na and its accessory mineral phases. The intracellular distribution of metals and other cations was mapped to evaluate metal release, speciation changes and/or cation exchange during phagocytosis. The fluorescent probes complemented microchemical data clarifying, and confirming, the cation distribution observed in the SR-micro-XRF maps. The significant cytoplasmic calcium decrease, and the concomitant sodium increase, after the fibre phagocytosis seemed due to activation of plasma membrane cations exchangers triggered by the internalisation while, surprisingly, the ion-exchange capacity of erionite-Na could play a minor role in the disruption of the two cations intracellular homeostasis. Context: Hyponatremia is associated with high in-hospital mortality in patients with acute decompensated Heart Failure (ADHF) and is one of the components in various risk scores in heart failure (HF). However, some risk scores predict outcomes in these patients without using hyponatremia as its component. Aim: The study was aimed to evaluate the relationship between serum sodium levels at admission and clinical outcomes during the in-hospital course and three months’ follow-up, in patients admitted in the intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) with ADHF. Methods and material: This was a single-center prospective, observational study in which 130 consecutive patients admitted with ADHF were observed for clinical characteristics and blood investigation at admission and their clinical outcomes during the in-hospital course and follow-up of 3 months. Results: Hyponatremia and systolic blood pressure (SBP) both were found to be the independent predictor of in-hospital mortality. The SXS score (calculated as a product of SBP and serum sodium, divided by 1000) as a new prediction variable was significantly associated with in-hospital mortality and was compared with the Get with the guideline HF (GWTG-HF) score and ADHF national registry (ADHERE) score. The SXS score showed the best overall accuracy in predicting in-hospital mortality [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.899] as compared to the ADHERE (AUC = 0.780) and the GWTG (AUC = 0.815). Conclusions: A score derived from the product of serum sodium and SBP (SXS score) had a significant association with in-hospital mortality, and better predictive value as compared to GWTG and ADHERE risk score in these patients.

Background and objectives: Annona senegalensis root bark is used in the treatment of diarrhea. This study fractionated Annona senegalensis root bark to identify the anti-enteropooling compounds and explore the possible mechanism of action of the compounds Methods: Anti-enteropooling activity of hexane, dichloromethane and aqueous extracts were investigated to determine the most bioactive crude extract. Bioactivity guided fractionation of the most active extract was conducted. The compounds present in the bioactive sub-fraction were identified using GC-MS analysis. The concentration of Na+, Cl− and K+ in the intestinal fluids of rats administered the most active sub-fraction was determined. The effect of the sub-fraction on the small intestine malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, antioxidant enzymes, Na+ - K + ATPase and cyclooxygenase II activities were evaluated using standard procedures. Results: Aqueous root bark extract (AR) significantly decreased the weight and volume of intestinal fluids of castor oil induced diarrheal rats. Sub-fraction 1 of dichloromethane fraction of aqueous root bark extract (DFAR1) decreased the weight and volume of intestinal fluids of castor oil-induced diarrheal rats the most. Androstan-3-one and 3-tetradecen-5-yne were found present in DFAR1. The concentration of Na+ in the intestinal fluid of rats administered DFAR1 significantly decreased when compared with the control. DFAR1 significantly decreased the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and cyclooxygenase II. There was no significant difference in MDA concentration and Na+ - K + ATPase activity. Conclusion: A. senegalensis root bark is rich in aldosterone derivative (steroid) and 3-tetradecen-5-yne that prevents enteropooling by stimulating Na+ absorption and inhibiting cyclooxygenase activity.

Inflammation causing oxidative stress in endothelial cells contributes to heart failure development. Sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i’s) were shown to reduce heart failure hospitalization and oxidative stress. However, how inflammation causes oxidative stress in endothelial cells, and how SGLT2i’s can reduce this is unknown. Here we hypothesized that 1) TNF-α activates the Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE) and raises cytoplasmatic Na+ ([Na+]c), 2) increased [Na+]c causes reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and 3) empagliflozin (EMPA) reduces inflammation-induced ROS through NHE inhibition and lowering of [Na+]c in human endothelial cells. Study Region: Reclamation of wetlands, including peatlands, is legally required in the Athabasca oil sands region following bitumen extraction via surface mining which leaves large open pits that are backfilled with saline tailings waste. Study Focus: Six years of hydrochemical data (2013 – 2018) from the Sandhill Fen Watershed (SFW), a 52-ha upland-peatland catchment that was built upon highly saline soft tailings, were used to evaluate salinity and ion patterns and provide insight on its trajectory. In general, electrical conductivity (EC) increased throughout SFW from 1) reduced inflow and outflow, 2) changes in water table positions and 3) increased mixing of site-wide waters. New Hydrological Insights for the Region: Salinity has increased site-wide over time as EC increased by an average of 1585 and 2313 µS/cm in the wetland and margins, respectively from 2013 to 2018. The uplands were the only region where EC declined by 1747 µS/cm over the six years. There is also evidence of mixing with underlying tailings waste (Na-Cl dominant) as the chemical composition of SFW waters shifted from largely Ca-dominant in 2013 (> 90%) to Na-dominant by 2018 (> 70%). Based on its current conditions, SFW cannot support freshwater peat-forming bryophytes and is most chemically similar to naturally occurring saline fens. A shift in design strategies is recommended (replicating saline instead of freshwater peatlands) to increase the success of these systems.

Abstract Background Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacterial pathogen that can cause grave and sometimes chronic infections in patients with weakened immune systems and cystic fibrosis. It is expected that sodium/proton transporters in the cellular membrane are crucial for the organism’s survival and growth under certain conditions, since many cellular processes rely on the maintenance of Na+ and H+ transmembrane gradients. Results This study focused on the role of the primary and secondary proton and/or sodium pumps Mrp, Nuo, NhaB, NhaP, and NQR for growth, biofilm formation, and swarming motility in P. aeruginosa. Using mutants with gene deletions, we investigated the impact of each sodium pump’s absence on the overall growth, biofilm formation, motility, and weak acid tolerance of the organism. We found that the absence of some, but not all, of the sodium pumps have a deleterious effect on the different phenotypes of P. aeruginosa. Conclusion The absence of the Mrp sodium/proton antiporter was clearly important in the organism’s ability to survive and function in environments of higher pH and sodium concentrations, while the absence of Complex I, which is encoded by the nuo genes, had some consistent impact on the organism’s growth regardless of the pH and sodium concentration of the environment.

Summary: Background: Hereditary Multiple Exostoses (HME) is a rare autosomal disorder characterized by the presence of multiple exostoses (osteochondromas) caused by a heterozygous loss of function mutation in EXT1 or EXT2; genes involved in heparan sulfate (HS) chain elongation. Considering that HS and other glycosaminoglycans play an important role in sodium and water homeostasis, we hypothesized that HME patients have perturbed whole body volume regulation and osmolality in response to high sodium conditions. Methods: We performed a randomized cross-over study in 7 male HME patients and 12 healthy controls, matched for age, BMI, blood pressure and renal function. All subjects followed both an 8-day low sodium diet (LSD, 200 mmol/d) in randomized order. After each diet, blood and urine samples were collected. Body fluid compartment measurements were performed by using the distribution curve of iohexol and 125I-albumin. Results: In HME patients, HSD resulted in significant increase of intracellular fluid volume (ICFV) (1.2 L, p = 0.01). In this group, solute-mediated water clearance was significantly lower after HSD, and no changes in interstitial fluid volume (IFV), plasma sodium, and effective osmolality were observed. In healthy controls, HSD did not influence ICFV, but expanded IFV (1.8 L, p = 0.058) and increased plasma sodium and effective osmolality. Conclusion: HME patients show altered body fluid distribution and osmoregulation after HSD compared to controls. Our results might indicate reduced interstitial sodium accumulation capacity in HME, leading to ICFV increase. Therefore, this study provides additional support that HS is crucial for maintaining constancy of the internal environment.

Snacking away from home is thought to contribute to excess intake of energy, added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium compared to snacking at home. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009–2016, we examined associations between location of snack consumption (at home or away from home) and added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium intake from food and beverage snacks in U.S. adolescents aged 12–19. We also compared top snack contributors to intakes of these nutrients by location of consumption. Nutrient intake (added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium) from food and beverage snacks was estimated by the average intake from two 24-hour dietary recalls, and location of consumption for each snack was reported by participants as at home or away from home. Adjusted mixed effects models were performed to examine associations between nutrient intakes and the location of consumption. ABSTRACT: The effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) and NaCl+sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) and supplemental phytase (0, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 FTU/kg) on performance, nutrient digestibility and utilization, and digesta pH of male broiler chickens were investigated in a 2 × 4+1 factorial arrangement of treatments in a completely randomized design with 6 replicate cages of 8 birds per replicate. Data were analyzed as a 2 × 4 factorial with contrast between the positive control and the diets containing 0 FTU phytase. Phytase supplementation linearly improved (P < 0.05) average body weigh gain (BWG) and feed intake (d 0–14 and 0–21). Apparent jejunal dry matter (DM) digestibility and digestible energy in birds fed diets containing only NaCl increased (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05) with phytase supplementation whereas quadratic (P < 0.05) effect was observed in birds fed diets containing a combination of NaCl and NaHCO3. Phytase supplementation improved (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05) apparent ileal nitrogen and P digestibility. Apparent utilization of DM, nitrogen, energy, and metabolizable energy increased (linear; P < 0.05) with increasing level of phytase supplementation. Apparent P utilization increased (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05) for both sodium sources but calcium utilization only increased (linear; P < 0.05) with the combination of NaCl and NaHCO3. Bone breaking strength (linear and quadratic) and bone ash (linear) increased (P < 0.05) with phytase supplementation. The combination of NaCl and NaHCO3 resulted in lower (P < 0.05) pH of digesta in the proximal ileum whereas the pH of the digesta in the distal ileum (linear) and the average pH of ileal contents (linear and quadratic) increased (P < 0.05) with phytase supplementation. Results from this study showed that birds’ performance and utilization of nutrients and energy by broilers in the presence of phytase was, in general, not influenced by the source of sodium in the diet. Data from this study showed that NaHCO3 can replace a portion of NaCl in the diet of broilers supplemented with phytase without any significant negative effect on performance and that the 2,000 FTU phytase level resulted in better BWG and feed intake as well nutrient and energy utilization.

Magnetic field combined with calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ,) treatment is a highly promising technique for reducing sodium chloride (NaCl) in meat. Therefore, this paper investigated the effect of reducing NaCl addition (0-10%) by CaCl 2 in combination with a magnetic field (3.8 mT) on the edible quality of low-salt pork mince. It is desired to drive the application of magnetic field and CaCl 2 in low-sodium meat processing in this way. Results showed that the cooking yield, color, hardness, elasticity, mouthfeel, apparent texture, and orderliness of protein conformation of all minced pork were improved as compared to the control group, while the electron nose response values of their volatile sulfides and nitrogen oxides were decreased. In particular, the best edible quality and perceived salty intensity of minced pork gel was obtained by using CaCl 2 in place of 5% NaCl under magnetic field mediation. In addition, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy scans showed that the reduced NaCl treatment by magnetic field combined with CaCl 2 could increase the signal intensity of sodium in minced pork matrices to some extent. Magnetic field-mediated substitution of NaCl for CaCl 2 treatment was also found to be favorable for inducing the transition of the protein secondary structure from an irregularly coiled to a β-folded structure (demonstrated by infrared spectroscopy). Background and Aims: In a randomised controlled trial (RCT), the between-arm difference in the average probability of an event per unit of time (i.e., yearly incidence risk difference, YIRD) is an easy-to-interpret treatment effect metric. We aimed to quantify the YIRD in cardiorenal RCTs of GLP-1RAs or SGLT-2is., Methods and Results: We digitally searched for RCTs published up to March 1st, 2023, including subjects with type 2 diabetes randomised to GLP-1RAs or SGLT-2is and investigating cardiorenal outcomes or death. We extracted information from Kaplan-Meier (KM) plots to obtain time-to-event individual data and estimate within-arm yearly incidence risk and YIRD. Data from 19 RCTs (28 kM plots) were analysed: comparing treatment to placebo, in GLP-1RA RCTs the YIRD ranged from 0.2 % (95 % CI: -0.7 %, 1.1 %) to -1.9 % (-3.1, -0.7), for primary outcome; and from -0.2 % (-0.5, 0.2) to -0.4 % (-0.7 %, -0.0 %), for mortality. The challenge in front of EDLC device is their low energy density compared to their battery counter parts. In the current study, a green plasticized nanocomposite sodium ion conducting polymer blend electrolytes (PNSPBE) was developed by incorporating plasticized Chitosan (CS) blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), doped with NaBr salt with various concentration of CaTiO 3 nanoparticles. The most optimized PNSPBE film was subsequently utilized in an EDLC device to evaluate its effectiveness both as an electrolyte and a separator. Structural and morphological changes were assessed using XRD and SEM techniques. The PNSPBE film demonstrated a peak ionic conductivity of 9.76×10 -5 S/cm, as determined through EIS analysis. The dielectric and AC studies provided further confirmation of structural modifications within the sample. Both TNM and LSV analyses affirmed the suitability of the prepared electrolyte for energy device applications, evidenced by its adequate ion transference number and an electrochemical potential window of 2.86 V. Electrochemical properties were assessed via CV and GCD techniques, confirming non-Faradaic ion storage, indicated by the rectangular CV pattern at low scan rates. High-value utilization of bleached lignin has been widely used in different fields, whereas the investigation on darkened lignin in composite materials was often ignored. In this work, a sort of eco-friendly and structurally robust sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) black composite mulch film was elaborately designed. The chelation and redox reaction effect between Fe ions and SLS lead to the formation of a more quinones structure on lignin, darkening both lignin and the mulch films. The chelation effect between Fe ions and biopolymer formed three-dimensional structures, which can be used as sacrifice bonds to dissipate energy and improve the mechanical properties of the composite films. In particular, the maximum elongation at break and toughness increased from 48.4 % and 1141 kJ/m 3 for the CMC/PVA film to 210.9 % and 1426 kJ/m 3 for the optimized CMC/PVA/SLS/Fe black mulch film, respectively. In addition, the optimized black mulch film also possesses good soil water retention, thermal preservation effect, controlled urea release, and well biodegradability. Background and Aims: Patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are at high risk of hepatic fibrosis. To prospectively evaluate changes in fibrosis in diabetic patients with NAFLD, predisposing factors and sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) influence., Methods: 237 T2DM outpatients (mean age 67 ± 9 years, 54% male) were enrolled and re-evaluated after 52 ± 10 months. At baseline and follow-up NAFLD and liver fibrosis (LSM) were detected by ultrasonography and Fibroscan®., Results: During follow-up an increase in LSM (6.0 ± 2.8 vs 5.8 ± 2.7 kPa, p = 0.02) and in the prescription of SGLT2i (20% vs 6%, p<0.001) was registered, despite stability of diabetic control. LSM worsened in 133(56%) subjects, 92 (39%) with worsening >10% from baseline. Patients with worsening versus non worsening of LSM had higher prevalence of increase in BMI during follow-up (45% vs 32%, p = 0.06) and lower SGLT2i prescription (15% vs 27%, p = 0.034). Background and Aims: Potassium-enriched low sodium salt substitutes (LSSS), which replace a proportion of sodium chloride (NaCl) with potassium chloride (KCl), have been shown to reduce blood pressure and offer a potential solution to address the high burden of hypertension in South Africa. However, it is unknown which proportions of KCl in LSSS are acceptable. We compared the taste and visual acceptability of various LSSS in South African adults., Methods and Results: Fifty-six adults underwent double-blind taste and visual tests of four LSSS (35%KCl/65%NaCl; 50%KCl/50%NaCl; 66%KCl/34%NaCl; 100%KCl) in comparison to 100%NaCl (common salt). Participants scored each product by taste ranking, taste perception and likeliness to use. Participants then visually inspected the five products and attempted to identify which was which. Almost half (45 %) of participants ranked the taste of 50%KCl/50 %NaCl as fantastic or really good. Furthermore, 62 % of participants liked and would be happy to use the 50 %KCl/50 %NaCl or felt this tasted like common salt. Only 12 % rated the 100%KCl highly for taste, and over half reported being unlikely to use this. Most participants (57.3 % and 36.4 %) were able to visually identify 100%NaCl and 100%KCl, while identification of other blends was generally poor. Responses were similar for 35%KCl/65%NaCl and 66%KCl/34%NaCl throughout., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the taste of the 50%KCl salt substitute would be well tolerated by South African adults, most of which could not visually differentiate between this salt substitute and common salt., (Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). The physicochemical characteristics of fatty acid (FA) vesicles and their ion sensitivity as drug delivery vehicles in an ion-competitive environment have received much attention. Here, we show that in a Na + /K + competitive ionic environment, FA vesicles undergo a cascade of periodic expansion and selective ion retention in response to osmotic attack. When the Na + /K + ratio is altered, the expansion and volume of vesicles are affected and the ions in vesicles mix with the hyperosmotic fluid to produce a stable transmembrane potential, consistent with the Donnan effect and iontophoresis theory. Furthermore, osmotic swelling experiments suggest that FA vesicles are more easily maintained in a single Na + or K + solution than in a multicomponent ion competition system. In this study, hydrophobic sodium alginate/anthocyanin/cellulose nanocrystal indicator films were fabricated by incorporating nanosilica (NS) as a waterproofing layer. The concentrations and formation methods (spraying (S), coating (C), and impregnation (I)) of the NS layer (denoted as NSS, NSC, NSI, respectively) were optimized. The results indicated that the optimum concentration of the NS layer was 5 % at a water contact angle (WCA) 110.5°. Further, Fourier transform infrared spectra showed the presence of SiOSi and SiCH 3 groups in the NSS, NSC, and NSI films, and X-ray diffraction spectra indicated that original structures of these films were disordered. Moreover, the surface morphology, mechanical properties, and light transmission were affected by the NS layer, and the optimal layer was found to be NSI. After 10 days of storage at 100 % humidity, the NSI film exhibited low water vapor adsorption (37.22 g) and permeability (0.1484 g/m·s·Pa·10 -11 ) and a high WCA (110.2°). In addition, the NSI film exhibited a visible color shift with an increasing pH of the buffer solution. A monitoring test of fish freshness showed that the NSI film displayed a distinctive color change corresponding to fish spoilage during 14 days of storage. Purpose: Multiple-quantum-filtered (MQF) sodium magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), such as enhanced single-quantum and triple-quantum-filtered imaging of 23 Na (eSISTINA), enables images to be weighted towards restricted sodium, a promising biomarker in clinical practice, but often suffers from clinically infeasible acquisition times and low image quality. This study aims to mitigate the above limitation by implementing a novel eSISTINA sequence at 7 T with the application of compressed sensing (CS) to accelerate eSISTINA acquisitions without a noticeable loss of information., Methods: A novel eSISTINA sequence with a 3D spiral-based sampling scheme was implemented at 7 T for the application of CS. Fully sampled datasets were obtained from one phantom and ten healthy subjects, and were then retrospectively undersampled by various undersampling factors. CS undersampled reconstructions were compared to fully sampled and undersampled nonuniform fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) reconstructions. Reconstruction performance was evaluated based on structural similarity (SSIM), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), weightings towards total and compartmental sodium, and in vivo quantitative estimates., Results: CS-based phantom and in vivo images have less noise and better structural delineation while maintaining the weightings towards total, non-restricted (predominantly extracellular), and restricted (primarily intracellular) sodium. CS generally outperforms NUFFT with a higher SNR and a better SSIM, except for the SSIM in TQ brain images, which is likely due to substantial noise contamination. CS enables in vivo quantitative estimates with <15% errors at an undersampling factor of up to two., Conclusions: Successful implementation of an eSISTINA sequence with an incoherent sampling scheme at 7 T was demonstrated. CS can accelerate eSISTINA by up to twofold at 7 T with reduced noise levels compared to NUFFT, while maintaining major structural information, reasonable weightings towards total and compartmental sodium, and relatively reliable in vivo quantification.
