Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition marked by a steady loss of dopaminergic neurons in the brain's substantia nigra. Prompt identification and tracking of PD progression are essential for prompt intervention and efficient PD care. In this study, we developed an immunofluorescence detection approach for α-synuclein (α-syn), a critical biomarker associated with PD, that is both extremely sensitive and specific. Using polyethylene glycol (PEG)-functionalized magnetic beads (MBs) and an Ag+ fluorescence probe (Ag+-FP) based on Rhodamine 6 G, the suggested method makes use of an immunofluorescence detection system. The system's workings are based on antigen-antibody complexes. Identified as Ab1-MBs@α-syn@Ab2-Ag NPs, the immuno-complexes encapsulate α-synuclein between anti-α-synuclein antibodies (Ab1) fixed on amino-MBs and Ag Nanoparticles functionalized with matching Ab2. α-synuclein detection was accomplished at a limit of less than 8 pg/mL through optimization of pH, reaction duration, and antibody concentration. The method showed very little cross-reactivity with other widely used biomarkers and a high specificity. The system showed a linear range of 524.8 ng/mL to 0.2 ng/mL. The results, which showed recovery values ranging from 97.00 % to 99.57 % and were consistent with those obtained using a commercial ELISA kit, indicated the system's potential for clinical applications in the diagnosis and monitoring of PD.

Aim: Nanotechnology presents a promising approach for managing chronic periodontitis, a common oral disease characterized by gum inflammation and loss of supporting bone around teeth. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of acerola-mediated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) gel and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) gel in periodontitis patients with and without diabetes. Materials and methods: The antimicrobial efficacy of acerola-mediated AgNPs gel and CuONPs nanogel was assessed using the agar well diffusion technique, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) assay, Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) analysis, time-kill curve assay, and cytoplasmic and protein leakage analysis from periodontitis patients with and without diabetes. Results: The study found that acerola-mediated AgNPs gel demonstrated more consistent and effective antimicrobial activity against periodontitis, with lower MIC and MBC values compared to the CuONPs gel, across all tested concentrations. These results suggest that acerola-mediated AgNPs gel may be a more effective and targeted therapeutic agent for periodontal disease management. Conclusion: The findings emphasize the importance of nanoparticle gel concentration in optimizing periodontal treatment outcomes. Acerola-mediated AgNPs gel, with its superior efficacy and consistency in bactericidal activity, shows significant potential for periodontal therapy. Clinical significance: Innovative nanoparticles like copper and silver oxides exhibit antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, making them promising agents for targeting periodontal pathogens. Acerola (Malpighia emarginata), with its high vitamin C content and antioxidant properties, is beneficial in mitigating oxidative stress associated with chronic periodontitis.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using a sustainable green approach utilizing deodorizer distillates of canola (CODD) and soybean oil (SODD) as both reducing and capping agents. This synthesis approach resulted in the formation of pale-yellow colored CODD-AgNPs and SODD-AgNPs, which was confirmed by distinctive absorption peaks at 420 nm and 408 nm, respectively via Ultraviolet-Visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis provided insights into the functional group interactions between CODD and SODD with their AgNPs. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the face-centered cubic lattice structure of both CODD-AgNPs and SODD-AgNPs. Further characterization via Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed the sizes, shapes, and surface morphologies of CODD-AgNPs and SODD-AgNPs. Assessment of antioxidant activity using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method demonstrated superior radical scavenging efficacy by CODD-AgNPs (IC50 value 1.07±0.04 µg/mL) and SODD-AgNPs (IC50 value 1.14±0.23 µg/mL) compared to CODD and SODD. Evaluation of antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) via disc diffusion method revealed potent antibacterial activities of CODD-AgNPs and SODD-AgNPs at 100 µg/mL concentration, surpassing the antibacterial efficacy of CODD and SODD. Furthermore, CODD-AgNPs and SODD-AgNPs exhibited significant anti-inflammatory potential at 500 µg/mL concentration, with IC50 values of 187.2 ± 1.28 µg/mL and 203.9 ± 2.08 µg/mL, respectively, highlighting their potential therapeutic applications. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the effective utilization of CODD and SODD in synthesizing AgNPs with enhanced biological functionalities, making them promising candidates for various biomedical applications.

A bioactive film was developed using cricket (Acheta domestica) protein (Cric-Prot) and Caralluma fimbriata extract-based nanoparticles [Car-Fim-NPs (0.0, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 % w/v)] to augment the storage stability and functional value of cheddar cheese (Ched-Chee). The Car-Fim-NPs were developed using an ultrasonication-mediated (20 kHz, 500 W, 10 min, pulse duration of 5/5 s on/off) green method. The addition of Car-Fim-NPs modified the film characteristics [density (%), WVTR (mg/mt2), transmittance (%), elongation at break (%), and colour (L*, a*, b*)] and enhanced its antioxidant [DPPH, ABTS and FRAP activities, total phenolic and flavonoid contents, and antioxidant release (%)] and antimicrobial (inhibitory halos against E. coli and S. aureus) potential. Application of the films containing Car-Fim-NPs (1.0–3.0 %) increased the antioxidant potential (DPPH, ABTS and FRAP activities), lipid (TBARS and free fatty acids) and protein (total carbonyl content) oxidative stability, and microbial quality (microbial counts) of the Ched-Chee during 90 days of storage. The sensory quality of Ched-Chee showed a significant increase after day 30 till the storage end. Gastrointestinal digestion simulation augmented the antioxidant potential of Ched-Chee. Overall, the results indicate the possibility of the use of Cric-Prot-based film containing Car-Fim-NPs to enhance the storage quality of Ched-Chee.

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) supported on natural materials have garnered significant attention due to their wide applicability across various research fields. This study presents an eco-friendly, scalable, and one-step approach to synthesizing high-purity Ag NPs supported by bentonite-graphitic carbon nitride (Bt-g-C3N4) nanocomposites via thermal reduction. The successful integration of Ag NPs into the Bt-g-C3N4 matrix was confirmed through several characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). XRF analysis identified the clay as beidellite-rich (Si/Al molar ratio less than 2), while EDX spectra and XRD patterns confirmed the presence of Ag NPs, with characteristic peaks at 38.04° and 44.24°. SEM and TEM images showed uniform Ag NP distribution with an average particle size of 4.75 nm and a spherical morphology. Acid-activated bentonite preserved its layered structure and exhibited a significant surface area increase, reaching 113.77 m²/g after hydrochloric acid treatment, thereby enhancing its capacity for supporting nanoparticle-based catalysts. The synthesized nanocomposites demonstrated exceptional catalytic performance, achieving reduction efficiencies of approximately 99 % for various organic pollutants, including nitrophenols (within 7 min for 4-nitrophenol), cationic dyes (within 12 min for Rhodamine B), and anionic dyes (within 5 min for methyl orange), using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as the reducing agent. The reduction followed first-order kinetics, with activity factors (k′) calculated as 134 s−1.g−1, 260 s−1.g−1, and 92 s−1.g−1 for 4-NP, MO, and RhB, respectively. Furthermore, the Ag NPs/Bt-g-C3N4 nanocomposites exhibited remarkable recyclability, maintaining high catalytic efficiency across multiple cycles.

Caffeic acid, a potent polyphenol belonging to the hydroxycinnamic acid derivative class, was utilized in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) at ambient temperature. The resultant conjugates underwent comprehensive characterization employing various analytical techniques, including UV–visible spectroscopy, FTIR, RAMAN spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) for size and zeta potential analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Through these analyses, the morphological characteristics of the synthesized nanoparticles were elucidated, providing valuable insights into their structural properties. Subsequently, the cytotoxic effects of the caffeic acid-synthesized silver nanoparticles were assessed against A549 cells over a 48-h period by MTT assay. Remarkably, these nanoparticles exhibited significant toxicity towards the cells, with inhibitory effects observed at concentrations of 141 μg/ml for CA AgNPs. This underscores their potential as potent agents against cancer cells. Furthermore, the profound significance of caffeic acid-synthesized silver nanoparticles was evaluated specifically against A549 lung cancer cells. This was corroborated through cell cycle analysis, which demonstrated the potent anticancer activity of the caffeic acid-synthesized silver nanoparticles. Such findings suggest promising prospects for their utilization in diverse cancer treatment modalities. Overall, the successful synthesis and characterization of caffeic acid-synthesized silver nanoparticles underscore their potential as potent agents against cancer, particularly in combating A549 lung cancer cells. Further research and exploration into their mechanisms of action and potential synergistic effects with existing anticancer therapies could unveil additional avenues for their clinical translation and utilization in cancer management.

Over the past few decades, nanoscience has gained a prominent position in plant-mediated synthesis of nanoparticles due to its advantages, such as environment-friendly and practical nature and biological safety and compatibility. This study was conducted to develop silver nanoparticles (NPs) based on Salvia sclarea flower extract and characterize them using UV–visible spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering, Zeta potential analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Transmission electron microscopy. We also evaluated the antibacterial (4 standard bacterial strains), anti-Candida (40 clinical isolates), and scolicidal activities of the green-synthesized Ag NPs. The characteristic absorption peak at 440 nm indicated the successful synthesis of AgNPs with spherical morphology and a size range of 30–40 nm according to TEM imaging. The FT-IR spectrum revealed the presence of functional constituents such as phenols, terpenoids, and saponins in the flower extract that could reduce metal ions and form AgNPs. EDX analysis confirmed the presence of silver (91.3 %) in the synthesized NPs. In addition, AgNPs exhibited remarkable antimicrobial activity. The highest antibacterial and antifungal activities of AgNPs were observed against Bacillus cereus and Candida krusei, respectively, while the lowest activities were observed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. At the concentration of 320 μg/mL, AgNPs delivered the highest percentage of mortality (100 %) against liver hydatid cyst protoscoleces within 15 minutes. Our findings highlight the potential of S. sclarea extract as an inexpensive and readily available material for producing biogenic AgNPs with versatile applications.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-Chitosan (Chi) functionalized cysteine (cys)-SAM (self-assembled monolayer) based electrochemical, label free, ultrasensitive, non-invasive immunosensing nanomolecular platform has been fabricated for the detection of novel OC biomarker S-100. This has been achieved through bio-functionalization of AgNPs-Chi/cys/mini gold slides by covalent immobilization of anti-S100 antibodies. Cyclic voltammetric (CV) studies establish successful fabrication of anti-S100/AgNPs-Chi/Au nanomolecular platform. Differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) measurements reveal that anti-S100/Chi-AgNPs/Au is able to sense 50 fg mL-1 – 500 ng mL-1 of S100 in buffer and in spiked saliva samples within 120 s interaction time having improved favorable shelf life and specificity. The fabricated platform is very selective and able to detect S100 in OC patient/s saliva samples warrants realization of simple non-invasive electrochemical immunosensor for in situ or on-site applications (especially for remote areas) for early diagnosis of OC while offering bio-compatibility at low cost.

Global efforts have been made to address environmental and health concerns by promoting and adopting renewable natural resources. This study investigated the role of bagasse-based wood vinegar to synthesize and stabilize silver nanoparticles. We present a simple bottom-up approach to produce silver nanoparticles using the green reducing agent. Wood vinegar has been used to create and stabilize nanoparticles as well as increase the biological activity of silver nanoparticles. In the WV-AgNPs aqueous dispersion's absorption spectra, a wide surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak with a 395 nm wavelength center was visible. Wood vinegar has been utilized not only to synthesize and stabilize nanoparticles, but it also makes silver nanoparticles biologically more active. Prepared WV-AgNPs showed remarkable antibacterial activity against three pathogenic bacteria and satisfactory antiproliferative activity against human breast (MCF-7) cell line. The stability of the prepared nanoparticles has been confirmed by zeta potential value. The surface morphology and the particle size were investigated by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The prepared particles are spherical in shape and particle size ranges from 20 to 40 nm. WV-AgNPs are further characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Based on the results, it can be concluded that silver nanoparticles mediated by wood vinegar showed promising properties and might find application in the biological domain.

Nanotechnology has experienced substantial expansion due to its wide-ranging applications, and in view of this, different synthetic routes were developed and many of them employ toxic reagents, have high energy consumption and generate toxic waste. Nowadays, with growing concerns regarding environmental and health safety, green chemistry is gaining prominence and as a result, certain synthetic routes have been replaced to align with the principles of green chemistry. This review outlines current methods for synthesizing silver, iron, and carbon nanoparticles, alongside discussions on green synthesis routes and their mechanisms. Additionally, it evaluates future perspectives on green synthesis, addressing the challenges that need to be overcome.

Background: Tannins are the polyphenolic group of plant compounds having strong antimicrobial potential. Research on human pathogens using silver nanoparticles for antimicrobial purposes has opened up new possibilities in nanomedicine. Objective: The present study was concerned with combining the effectiveness of the two by the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles with plant tannin. Methods: Synthesis of silver nanoparticles was done based on the tannin content of the selected plants. Characterization of the synthesized nanoparticles has been performed through UV–VIS, FTIR spectroscopy, Zeta potential, XRD analysis and FEGSEM imaging. The antibacterial potentiality of the nanoparticles was checked against two most susceptible bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis and Salmonella typhi. Results: Among the studied plants, Phyllanthus emblica showed highest tannin content and best bactericidal properties. The nanoparticles synthesized with P. emblica showed the highest zone of inhibition against the studied bacteria. An in-silico comparative molecular docking study of the bioactive compounds from the selected plants was performed against the FtsZ protein of S. epidermidis and YfdX protein of S. typhi. Three compounds namely Isocorilagin,1(β), 6-di-o-galloylglucose and Hamamelitannin appeared as the best inhibitors of the said proteins and among them, Isocorilagin, a natural tannin showed the best docking score of -10.2 Kcal/mol with FtsZ protein. Further molecular dynamics simulation studies of the FtsZ protein-Isocorilagin complex support its stability indicating Isocorilagin as the natural inhibitor of the pathogenic bacterial protein FtsZ. Conclusion: These results concluded that synthesis of nanoparticles with plant tannin is a cost effective green approach and the synthesised nanoparticles appear as efficient antimicrobial agent.

In this research, a comparative study of the anti-diabetic effects of Avocado (Persea americana) seed extracts and biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in alloxan-induced diabetic albino mice was conducted. The animals were assigned into twenty-one groups of five animals each; the diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 150 mg/kg of the prepared alloxan monohydrate. After 15–25 days of using 7.5 mg/ml aqueous extract of P. americana seeds, it was found that blood sugar levels dropped significantly. In addition, over the 20–25 days treatment period, levels of blood sugar were reduced considerably when doses of 5.0 or 10 mg/ml of the aqueous extract were introduced. However, throughout this treatment period, animals injected with 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, or 10.0 mg/ml of P. americana seed aqueous extract showed a significant rise in weight. In addition, over 20–25 days of treatment, animals treated with 7.5 and 10.0 mg/ml P. americana seed alcoholic extract showed a substantial decrease in blood sugar levels. Over the 25 days of treatment, animals treated with 7.5 mg/ml P. americana seed in alcoholic extract also showed a noticeable rise in weight. On the other hand, the prepared Ag NPs were synthesized and characterized using color changes, UV–visible spectroscopy, SEM, and AFM analysis. A substantial reduction in blood sugar levels was noted with 2.5 mg/ml of biosynthesized Ag NPs, while mice weights significantly increased. The highest substantial reduction in glycaemia occurred by combining 7.5 mg/ml aqueous extract and 2.5 mg/ml biosynthesized Ag NPs, resulting in a high increase in animal weight across all combination concentrations. Regarding the interaction between combination concentrations and treatment periods, animals’ weight increased significantly in all combined concentrations during the 20–25 days compared to the control. Furthermore, an increase in LDL and VLDL concentrations was observed in the negative control group compared to the positive control and other treated groups.

Background: The global incidence of bloodstream infections (BSIs) is rising, necessitating the development of effective therapeutic strategies to achieve complete eradication. This study focuses on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) functionalized with Clematis gouriana extract (CG) (CG-AgNPs) as a potential alternative to conventional treatments for combating BSIs caused by bacterial pathogens. Methods: AgNPs were synthesized by reducing silver nitrate (AgNO₃) using CG extract. The formation of CG-AgNPs was confirmed through UV-Vis spectroscopy, while their characterization included the determination of mean particle size and zeta potential. Elemental composition was analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. The in vitro antibacterial efficacy of CG-AgNPs was assessed through multiple assays, including a time-kill assay, a film bioadhesion assay, and measurement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Results: SPR (surface plasmon resonance) has been employed to validate the development of AgNPs by observing a colour shift to dark brown. The mean particle size and zeta potential of the CG-AgNPs were found to be 38 ± 2 nm (PDI 0.104 ± 0.03) and −31.2 ± 1.4 mV, respectively. Additionally, E-XRD results show that the prepared AgNPs comply with the silver presence. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) of the CG-AgNPs against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were observed to be 6.25 ± 0.8 µg/mL and 13.5 ± 2.4 µg/mL, respectively.Similarly, the MIC and MBC of CG-AgNPs against Escherichia coli (E. coli) were found to be 13.5 ± 1.5 μg/mL and 26 ± 2.8 μg/mL, respectively. CG-AgNPs also prevented biofilm formation and bacterial adhesion in a dose-dependent manner; 100 % inhibition was achieved in 48 h at MBC. In addition, CG-AgNPs remarkably escalated the ROS level within cells, indicating their mechanism of antimicarobial activity. Conclusions: The findings of this study demonstrate that CG-AgNPs synthesized via green synthesis exhibit significant antibacterial activity, highlighting their potential as an effective alternative for the treatment of BSIs. However, further in vivo studies are required to optimize a suitable dosage form and validate their therapeutic efficacy against bacterial infections in clinical settings.

Green synthesis methods for making nanoparticles using plant extracts have gained considerable attention in recent years, particularly because of their potential applications in nanomedicine. Plant biosynthesized nanoparticles have shown noteworthy biomedical uses in comparison. The silver nanoparticle (AgNP) synthesized using extracts from the leaves and flowers of Cymbopogon citratus Linn was investigated for its antibacterial and anticancer properties. The biosynthesized AgNPs were characterized using UV–Vis, FTIR, DLS, EDX and SEM. The presence of alcohol, alkene, and phytochemicals in the AgNPs was confirmed using FTIR analysis. The investigation using SEM with EDX spectroscopy confirmed that the AgNPs were both pure and in the form of nanocrystals. Furthermore, AgNPs demonstrated significant antibacterial activity by efficiently suppressing bacterial growth. The biosynthesized AgNPs exhibited a concentration-dependent reduction in the lung cancer-A549 cell growth. The ethanolic extracts of C. citratus flower-synthesized AgNPs contain a wide range of phytochemical constituents. These components have been shown to effectively modulate antibacterial and anticancer activities, superior to the effects of leaf extracts synthesized AgNPs. Consequently, additional research is required to investigate the potential biomedical applications of these biosynthesized AgNPs.

This study introduces a sustainable method for producing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), focusing on sustainability and environmental protection. The technique includes the use of Salvia elegans aqueous leaf extract as a reducing agent. In addition, the research investigates the dose-dependent degradation of pUC19 DNA by silver nanoparticles, which is facilitated by the generation of singlet oxygen. The presence of S. elegans extract results in significant color changes, going from a colorless state to a dark brown hue, serving as an indication of the synthesis of AgNPs. A range of experimental methods were employed to analyze the biogenic AgNPs, such as UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The meticulously produced AgNPs demonstrate a high level of uniformity, featuring a spherical shape and a particle size of 60 nm. DNA photo-cleavage studies show that singlet oxygen plays a crucial role in triggering DNA damage caused by AgNPs, indicating their potential as powerful cytotoxic agents specifically aimed at cancer cells. Additional studies are required to clarify the effectiveness and specificity of AgNPs against various cancer cell types to assess their therapeutic potential. The cytotoxic effects of AgNPs, particularly in relation to DNA photocleavage, are of considerable interest in cancer research. This research holds promise for developing novel and sustainable cancer therapies based on the unique properties of biogenic silver nanoparticles.

In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using the aqueous extract of Coccinia grandis (L) Voigt leaf (CGL) extract using microwave irradiation method and the structure was elucidated by various techniques such as UV–Visible spectroscopy, Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The UV–visible spectroscopy confirmed the formation of AgNPs and SPR band appear at 420 nm. FT-IR analysis indicated the presence of –OH and –NH functional groups from secondary molecules of CGL capping the AgNPs surface. HR-TEM revealed spherical aggregates with an average size of 29.4 nm. EDX confirmed the presence of elemental silver. XRD analysis showed that the AgNPs had a face-cantered cubic (FCC) crystal structure. The CGL-AgNPs were used as a heterogeneous catalyst to reduce RhB and CR dyes from aqueous solutions in the presence of sodium borohydride (NaBH4). The results showed that greater than 95 % of catalytic reduction can be accomplished within 9 min. The biosynthesized AgNPs demonstrated notable antioxidant activity (82.89 % in the DPPH assay) and antibacterial activity with a Zone of inhibition ranging from 9 to 11 mm. These findings suggest that CGL can be used to synthesize new, cost-effective AgNPs using an environmentally friendly approach.

In this work, preparation of modified silica gel supported silver nanoparticles and its evaluation using zone of inhibition for water disinfection were investigated. The silica contents of the teff straw [TS] and teff straw ash [TSA] are 5.92 and 92.21 %, respectively. The calcinated TS ash at 700 °C was mixed with NaOH solution. The solution is then neutralized with HCl solution and then gel formation using the sol gel method. The silica gel yield was recorded and characterized. The SG with major silica functional group, amorphous structure, high porosity from the morphology, high surface area of 807.163 m2/g, pore volume of 0.34 cm3/g, pore diameter of 1.70 nm and silica gel purity of 99.39 % were achieved at a calcination temperature of 700 °C. It is then; further modified using trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS)/ethanol/hexane at different volumetric ratio and the resulting product is modified silica gel (MSG). MSG has excellent hydrophobic properties that have been required during water treatment. In this method, MSG with a major silica functional group, well ordered structure due to the TMCS modifier, maximum surface area of 510.40 m2/g was achieved at volumetric ratio of 0.25:0.25:1 of TMCS/ethanol/hexane, respectively. Then, MSG supported AgNPs (MSG-AgNPs) was prepared by mixing different concentrations of AgNPs-MSG and characterized. The MSG-AgNPs have shown AgNPs on the surface of MSG from the EDX result, different absorbance, pore from the morphology, with a maximum surface area of 475.0 m2/g was obtained at 1.5 mM of AgNPs concentrations. The performance of MSG-AgNPs was evaluated using zone of inhibition measurement and batch disinfection studies against E. coli and S. aureus. At 1.5 x 108 CFU/mL initial bacterial concentrations, the maximum inhibition zone diameter was 12.80 and 14.30 mm for E. coli and S. aureus, respectively.

Silver nanoparticles have garnered significant interest due to their unique properties, such as small size, high specific surface area, and high reactivity, making them valuable in various industries, including medicine, healthcare, consumer products, and food. The synthesis of silver nanoparticles has been extensively studied, with numerous methods reported, including physical, chemical, and biological routes. These synthesis methods can influence the antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles, which is critical in hospital settings where pathogen exposure and antibiotic resistance are prevalent concerns. Notably, hospital environments face high infection risks from pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, necessitating new antibacterial agents. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial effects of synthesized silver nanoparticles against the pathogenic microorganisms S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. The Silver nanoparticles were characterized using UV–vis spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The nanoparticles had an average size of 52 nm and exhibited an absorption peak at 430 nm. Both S. aureus and P. aeruginosa demonstrated zones of inhibition when exposed to the silver nanoparticles, indicating their potent antibacterial activity. This study highlights the potential of silver nanoparticles as effective antibacterial agents in the healthcare industry, particularly in combating hospital-acquired infections.

Chronic wounds, particularly those infected with multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, present significant challenges for effective healing. Silver nanoparticles (CAAgNPs) were synthsized using aqueous rhizome extract of Curcuma aromatica (CA), known for its wound-healing properties. CAAgNPs were incorporated in a chitosan (CS) dressing (CAAgNPs/CS) and tested for their wound healing potential, expecting synergistic action of AgNPs and phytochemicals capped on it. The porous nature of the CAAgNPs was confirmed using Field emission scanning electron microscopy. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated a shift in peak intensity from 1589.06 to 1575.54 cm-1 for CAAgNPs/CS dressing confirming crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. Antibacterial activity of the dressings was cofirmed against isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Wound healing studies were carried out using Wistar rats (six groups)- wound control, CS, CAAgNPs256/CS, CAAgNPs512/CS, CAAgNPs1024/CS, and commercial dressings. Histological examination and direct red-80 staining demonstrated maximum epithelization and collagen deposition (58.02%) within CAAgNPs1024/CS groups on day 10. Increased hydroxyproline levels (76.51 µg/mL) on day 7 for CAAgNPs1024/CS indicated maximum collagen formation. Reduced levels of inflammatory cytokines IL-6 (17.38 pg/mL) and TNF-α (80.38 pg/mL) on day 10 indicated quick wound healing without scar formation and damaging effects. The present study highlights the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of CAAgNPs1024/CS dressings with a potential for wound healing applications.

Over 70 % of bacterial infections are resistant to one or more of the antibiotics are generally used to eliminate infections. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), ginger oil, and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) are among the materials and the green natural products that possess antimicrobial properties. In this study, combinations of the medicinal properties of CMC, AgNPs, and ginger oil were put together in one product via the synthesis of CMC-Ag-Ginger-nanocomposite. To increase the miscibility of ginger oil -used in the synthesis-, different surfactants were applied to the synthesis aqueous medium. Thus, the nanocomposite synthesized in such way assumed a new method. In addition, the nanocomposite produced using ginger oil, silver nitrate, CMC, and surfactants assumed a new nanocomposite synthesized for the first time in this research work. The Optimum reaction conditions that brought the highest AgNPs absorbance and the formation of CMC-Ag-Ginger-nanocomposite were studied. For better miscibility of ginger oil, glycerin, Tween 80, or Egyptol were applied to the synthesis aqueous medium. AgNPs obtained were evaluated by the absorbance of the nanocomposite colloidal solution. Optimum conditions: 0.5 % (w/v) Egyptol, 0.01M AgNO3, 0.5 % (w/v) ginger oil, 3 % (w/v) carboxymethyl chitosan, 95°C for 3h. A decrease in N % of CMC-Ag-G-nanocomposite (3.04 %) compared with N % of CMC (4.03 %) confirmed the formation of the nanocomposite. TEM showed spherical shape AgNPs with size range of 8–35 nm, whereas highest count % was 12–25 nm. SAED of AgNPs exhibited ring patterns with bright spots displaying polycrystallinity which agreed with XRD. SEM of CMC-Ag-G-nanocomposite showed porous structure and well distribution of AgNPs within CMC polymer. TGA showed that CMC-Ag-G-nanocomposite is more thermally stable than CMC. CMC-Ag-G-nanocomposite showed higher antibacterial efficacy against S. Aureus and E. coli and higher antimicrobial efficacy against Aspergillus Niger and Candida albicans compared to CMC. These findings render the newly prepared nanocomposite suitable for medical and other applications.

In recent years, antibacterial wound dressings have gained considerable attention. Bacterial cellulose (BC) has received significant interest due to its unique physiochemical characteristics such as biocompatibility, high porosity, superior mechanical properties, water holding capacity, and nontoxicity. In this work, silver nanoparticles/graphitic carbon nitride/eucalyptus extract (Ag/gCN/EE) nanocomposite was synthesized as an antibacterial agent and incorporated into nanofibrous structures composed of BC. The BC/Ag/gCN/EE and polyvinyl alcohol/BC/Ag/gCN/EE (PVA/BC/Ag/gCN/EE) nanocomposites were synthesized using immersion and electrospinning methods, respectively. Then, the swelling ratio was optimized and the wound dressings were prepared based on the optimal formulation. The release profile, biodegradability and mechanical properties of the wound dressings were assessed. The antibacterial property of Ag/gCN/EE was studied demonstrating strong antibacterial activity on E. coli and S. aureus. MTT assay was carried out on NIH 3T3 fibroblast cells, and BC/Ag/gCN/EE and PVA/BC/Ag/gCN/EE nanocomposites showed 89 ± 2.31 % and 96 ± 3.28 % viability, respectively and no toxicity. To assess the effect of the composites on in vitro wound healing and cell migration, scratch wound assay was performed. The results indicated that after 24 h, BC/Ag/gCN/EE and PVA/BC/Ag/gCN/EE reduced 18.69 and 23.97 % of the scratch area compared to the control group. The prepared composites are promising wound dressings that could accelerate wound healing and kill bacteria simultaneously.

Tin contamination in waters due to mining and natural activities in high concentrations can threaten human health. This research presents the development of a sensitive and selective colorimetric sensor in aqueous, paper, and gel-based to detect Sn2+. The development of such sensors is promising, with attractive advantages such as intense color, fast naked-eye response, and simple continuous fabrication. The addition of Sn2+ ions will change the color of the medium because curcumin (Cur) interacts with Sn2+, causing a decrease in free Cur, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) becoming less stable, and a change in particle size. Colorimetric changes in Sn2+ were achieved by visual inspection within 10 min for aqueous-based and 20 min for paper and gel-based. The good linear relationship (R2 = 0.9999) between Sn2+ and Δ absorption with a detection limit of up to 66.99 µg/L. This method is relatively scalable in determining Sn2+ and shows good recovery between 80 and 105 %. This colorimetric sensor gives good sensitivity to Sn2+ metal ions which is expected to become the basic technology for developing in-situ sensors to monitor Sn2+ levels in tin industrial waste.

The current study successfully reported biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (bio-AgNPs) using an efficient green route, employing Archidendron bubalinum pods extract as reducing and stabilizing agent under sunlight irradiation. A. bubalinum pod extract contains several fatty acid macromolecules, such as palmitic acid, stearic acid, cinnamic acid, and oleic acid. Those compounds contain hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, which play a crucial role in the reduction process of Ag ions to form Ag nanoparticles. UV–Visible spectrophotometry confirmed the formation of bio-AgNPs. The Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) also supported the bio-AgNPs formation, consisting of 67.42 % of Ag in a crystalline form. Meanwhile, the materials size was confirmed by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), resulting in an average size of 58.9 ± 7.6 nm. This result aligned with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and was confirmed that the material had spherical AgNPs capped with a thin layer. Moreover, this method resulted in stable bio-AgNPs with a surface charge of −32.4 ± 0.35 mV that were stable for over 3 months. Further, the materials were tested against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6633 and Gram-negative Escherichia coli ATCC6633 bacteria using inhibition test, MIC, and MBC, demonstrating a good inhibition.

Although silver nanoparticles have long attracted scientists due to their remarkable antibacterial properties, the tendency of AgNPs to agglomerate results in diminished antibacterial activities and increased toxicity against normal cells. Among carbon-based nanomaterials, graphene oxide (GO), the oxidized form of graphene, can be utilized as a base for AgNPs to grow and disperse. Regarding the chemical approach, it is conventional to engage sodium borohydride (NaBH4) or hydrazine to reduce silver ions. However, using excessive amounts of these chemicals raises concerns about toxicity in biomedical applications and environmental issues. Here, this work report the synthesis of AgNPs@GO nanocomposites by reducing silver nitrate on GO using various green reducing agents, including ascorbic acid, Houttuynia cordata Thunb. leaf extract, Coffea robusta L. Linden (Robusta green coffee) bean extract, and Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze (green tea) leaf extract. The synthesized AgNPs@GO were characterized by X-ray diffraction spectrum, UV–Vis analysis, and dynamic light scattering, followed by an evaluation of the antibacterial activity using the diffusion agar method. The results demonstrate the high potential of green tea as a green-reducing agent in the synthesis procedure of AgNPs. The synthesized AgNPs@GO using green tea extract showed a similar UV–Vis spectral shape compared to the AgNPs@GO synthesized using NaBH4 with the maximum absorption wavelengths of AgNPs at 428 nm and GO at 203.5 nm. The AgNPs@GO synthesized also had the smallest average diameter (609.67 nm) and the highest magnitude of the zeta potential (29.83 mV) among all synthesized samples. Noteworthy is that AgNPs@GO synthesized with green tea extract demonstrated significant stability over 40 days. Furthermore, the results of the antibacterial experiments reveal that the diameter of the inhibitory zone was approximately 2 mm, half that of the control drug amoxicillin (1 mg/mL). In summary, green tea leaf extract emerged as the most effective reducing agent for the eco-friendly synthesis of stable and durable AgNPs@GO. This indicates a suitable and straightforward process for large-scale antibacterial production with potential applications in biological wastewater treatment.

Metallic silver, particularly in the form of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), has gained renewed attention as a powerful antimicrobial solution. In the present investigation, AgNP was synthesized using pigments produced by Talaromyces atroroseus, and Curcumin was loaded onto these AgNP to evaluate their potent antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer activities. The maximal biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) was achieved at an optimized precursor concentration of 6 mM silver nitrate (AgNO₃) and a reducing agent concentration of 0.5 g/L fungal pigment. The incorporation efficiency of curcumin onto AgNP was determined to be 11 %. Comprehensive characterization of both curcumin-loaded and unloaded AgNPs was performed using EDS, SEM, FTIR and XRD. Antibacterial assays revealed that both formulations exhibited antimicrobial properties, with the curcumin-loaded AgNPs displaying significantly enhanced inhibitory effects, particularly against Staphylococcus aureus, showing an inhibition zone of 16 ± 0.33 mm. Furthermore, curcumin-loaded AgNPs demonstrated moderate antioxidant activity, with a 36.32 % free radical scavenging rate and an IC50 of 71.9 µg mL−1. The nanoparticles also exhibited potent anti-inflammatory properties, achieving 84.05 % inhibition of inflammation and an IC50 of 96.69 µg mL−1. Notably, curcumin-loaded AgNPs demonstrated cytotoxicity in 100 µg mL−1 of the concentration tested on lung cancer cell line (A549) at 96 hrs. These results suggest that the extended incubation hours or increasing the concentrations of the AgNPs could be lethal concentrations that could completely inhibit the proliferation of lung cancer cells. However, further validation in in-vivo models for toxicity and clearance of AgNPs from the system has to be studied. The observed synergistic effects of biosynthesized curcumin-loaded AgNPs suggest a promising alternative to conventional antibiotic therapies.

In response to the increasing shortage of agrochemicals in developing countries, which directly impacts farmers' livelihoods, this study investigates the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) employ the enzymatic extract from a native strain of Fusarium oxysporum H39. These nanoparticles were assessed for their antibacterial efficacy facing potato tuber soft rot caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum. The optimal conditions for AgNP synthesis were determined to be a concentration of 3 mM, a pH of 10, and a temperature of 27°C over a 24-hour period. Under these conditions, spherical nanoparticles with an average size of 12.3 ± 4.3 nm were produced. FTIR analysis indicated the presence of organic compounds on the surface of the AgNPs, as evidenced by bands corresponding to C-O, C-N, and C-C bonds. The nanoparticles demonstrated significant nanopesticide activity facing the phytopathogenic bacterium P. carotovorum, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 25 ppm and 50 ppm identified through microdilution and macrodilution assays, respectively. Additionally, in controlled substrate tests, preventive treatment of tubers with a 100 ppm dose of AgNPs significantly reduced the weight of macerated tissue, the primary symptom of the disease.

A novel thin-film solid-phase microextraction (TF-SPME) device based on glass vials internally coated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was developed for the first time, and used for determining five phenols in wastewater, bottled water, and irrigation water samples by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA). Different AgNPs were synthesized varying the ratio of metallic salt versus the reduction agent, and the pH of the synthesis. The preparation of the TF-SPME glass vial device was optimized in terms of the type of AgNPs used and the number of layers of AgNPs. Besides, the TF-SPME procedure was also optimized. The TF-SPME method was very simple, only requiring the addition of 18 mL of water and 5 min of agitation, followed by the disposal of the water and addition of the 750 µL as desorption solvent, and direct HPLC-PDA injection. The entire method showed adequate analytical performance, with limits of detection ranging from 3 to 8 μg·L-1, and intra-day and inter-day precision (as RSD), both evaluated with different vials and therefore showing inter-batch precision, with values between 8.70 and 16.4 %, and 6.0 and 19.7 %, respectively. The TF-SPME-HPLC-PDA procedure was compared with previous methods for the determination of phenols, both in terms of analytical performance and greenness assessments applying different metrics, showing clear advantages.

Rutin is a flavonoid glycoside abundant in many plants exhibiting pharmacological activities like antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. Plant biomarkers suffer low bioavailability and solubility that lack clinical effectiveness. The smart nanoparticles conversion addresses this limitation with optimal particle size and targeted drug delivery. The present study involves QbD approach for formulation of Rutin silver nanoparticles and evaluation of antioxidant, anticancer and anticlastogenic potential. QbD experimentation involved particle size and drug release as dependent variables over the silver nitrate concentration, methanol and sonication time as independent variables devising 15 formulations (F1 –F15). F12 formulation was found to be optimized with 126.3 nm average size, stable and dispersible characterized by UV, FTIR, SEM and DLS studies. The calibration curve of Rutin was plotted at 352 nm with linearity (LOD = 0.061 μg/ml and LOQ = 0.187 μg/ml). The invitro drug release studies by USP dissolution apparatus I (Basket type) proved the sustained release characteristics with 97.3 % drug release when compared to the Rutin. The pharmacological screening for potential antioxidant and anticancer activity on G361 and MCF 7 cell line of F12 formulation have shown promising results and also enhanced solubility in water compared to Rutin. Anticalstogenic potential as a function of induced micronuclei frequency was evaluated as a characteristic feature in bone marrow cells obtained from mice. Results indicate pre-treatment with the F12 reduced frequency of micronuclei in mouse bone marrow cells caused by Cyclophosphamide (CP) significantly. The protective effect of F12 in suppression was demonstrated at both dosages of 100 and 200 mg/kg. Thus the findings suggest the novel Rutin silver nanoparticles as lead drug serving as antioxidant, anticancer and anticlastogenic agent.

This study was aimed to synthesize biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Nigella sativa (N. sativa) plant extracts as bio-reductant. The fabricated nanoparticles were characterized by UV–visible, FTIR, and XRD. The extracts and AgNPs were then evaluated for their antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials using DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay and agar well diffusion assay correspondingly. The color change from pale yellow to tan brownish confirmed the fabrication of nanoparticles. The broad peak from 420 to 430 in the UV–Visible spectrum also confirmed AgNPs formation. In XRD spectrum the peaks indices (111), (200), (220), and (311) belonging to 2θ values of 38.101, 44.370, 64.179, and 77.549 indicated the presence of silver crystals (JCPDS file no. 00-001-1167). The presence of organic functional groups in the FTIR spectra confirmed the involvement of plant phytochemicals in fabrication of nanoparticles. Comparatively strong antioxidant potential was recorded for silver nanoparticles in comparison to parental extract. The lowest IC50 recorded was in the case flower based AgNPs was 70 µl where it corresponding crude extract resulted in IC50 of 910 µl. Highest IC50 was recorded for stem extract based NPs (100 µl). The antifungal potential of AgNPs from flower was high (24 mm) and that of the stem extract-based NPs was low (19 mm) whereas the antibacterial potential of the stem and seed extract-based extract was comparable however, the leaf and flower-based extract-based NPs were also, substantial. It was concluded from the results that all the whole Nigella sativa plant contained the reductant phytochemicals which be effectively used to fabricate NPs of the desired sizes. The fabricated NPs also exhibited good antioxidant and antimicrobial properties and can be considered as alternative drugs subjected to further verifications of the results in animal model.

In order to build and design stable molecular structures of α‐D‐glucose molecules after adding to a cluster of silver atoms, an optimization process was precisely carried out for α‐D glucose/Ag3 molecule at low energy. The correlation between glucose molecule and silver atoms is evaluated by investigating configurational and electronic features of the named molecules by adopting the Density functional theory DFT using the hybrid B3LYP functional and 6–311+G∗ as a basis set for C, O, and H atoms, while LANL2DZ set for silver (Ag) atoms. Frequencies of vibrational modes are essential analyses that have been instrumental in understanding the IR spectra of studied molecules. These analyses enable the detection of the active groups along the spectrum chart including C–O–C, C=O, C–O, O–H, C–C and C–H peaks confirming the previous experimental findings. Another important finding is the energy gap (Eg) obtained by the difference between the higher occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lower unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). Remarkably, Eg was found to increase from 3.440 to 4.358 eV in a configuration consisting of two glucose molecules with one Ag atom (2α‐D glucose/Ag-C12H24O12Ag) to another with one glucose molecule with three Ag atoms (α‐D glucose/Ag3-C6H12O6Ag3) configuration. Additionally, the potential of the molecular electrostatic isosurface (MEP) in 3D diagram for two configurations is clarified by the colour-coded bar with the distributions of charge density distributions to examine the nucleophilicity and electrophilicity behaviour.

Nanotechnology in which silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have received more interest in fruits and vegetables (FaV) preservation due to their anti-microorganism properties. There are various approaches to synthesizing AgNPs, in which biological reduction, especially plant extraction containing bioactive compounds, is considered non-toxic, eco-friendly, and economically viable. AgNPs can be applied for FaV preservation by immersing or incorporating AgNPs into the edible coating or wrapper film. Depending on the type of coating and the kind of FaV, choosing the coating components is necessary to ensure the anti-microorganism ability and improve preservation efficiency. This review highlights green-synthesized AgNPs for preserving FaV. The study covered the materials employed in the green synthesis of AgNPs, their effectiveness against microorganisms, the influence of AgNPs on film structure, safety properties, and various preservation strategies. Using plant or bacterial-synthesized AgNPs in edible coatings offers a sustainable approach to enhance safety, edibility, environmental friendliness, and FaV quality during storage.

Trigonella foenum-graecum is an economically important plant that has significant nutraceutical properties. Various parts of the plant have previously been reported to synthesize metal nanoparticles. However, the seeds of the plant have limited potential to synthesize metal nanoparticles. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles requires phytochemicals as reducing and metal chelating agents, in addition to the stabilizing agents that play critical role in nanoparticles stabilization. The quantitative analysis of the methanol extract of the seeds suggest that the extract has significant antioxidant activity and reducing potential which is comparable to that of ascorbic acid. Likewise, GCMS data of the extract identified several phytochemical components that have nanoparticles stabilizing potential. Evidently, the extract indeed synthesized silver nanoparticles in dark, albeit in very low quantity. This limitation of low quantity of nanoparticles synthesis was overcome by photocatalysis. The rate of nanoparticles synthesis increased significantly with increase in the intensity of the white light-emitting diode (LED) light. Furthermore, the photocatalytic effect of the white light also has significant impact on the physicochemical characterisation of the nanoparticles. Particle size, nanoparticles yield and elemental analysis demonstrated that the 2000 lumens white LED light is optimum for photocatalysis as compared to the 250 lumens and 825 lumens light. However, the stability of nanoparticles is not influenced by photoirradiation, and is rather controlled by the phytochemical composition of the extract. Methanol extract of the seeds significantly enhanced the stability of the silver nanoparticles irrespective of the light intensities used for photocatalysis.

This present study reports the biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and Ag/Au bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) using bark extract of plant Tamarix aphylla (T.A). The bark extract contained total polyphenolic compounds and total flavonoids as 0.0362 mg/mg and 0.2928 mg/mg of the dried bark extract respectively. Silver nitrate (AgNO3) and hydrogen tetra chloroaurate trihydrate (HAuCl4.3H2O) were used as precursors while deionised water and methanol (CH3OH) were used as solvents. Synthesized nanoparticles were characterized through UV–visible spectroscopy, SEM (scanning electron microscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) for their morphology, structure, and identification of different functional groups. The UV–visible spectra of AgNPs, AuNPs and Ag/Au BNPs showed peaks at 436, 532 and 527 nm respectively due to the excitation of Surface Plasmon Resonance. SEM and TEM images showed spherical and well distributed nanoparticles (NPs) with particle size as 29 nm (AgNPs), 13 nm (AuNPs) and 26 nm (Ag/Au BNPs). The synthesized NPs are significantly active against inhibition of free radicals, α-amylase, α-glucosidase and have anti inflammatory potential with AgNPs having the highest percent activity at 400 μg/ml, followed by Ag/Au BNPs. The same trend (AgNPs > Ag/AuBNPs > AuNPs) has been observed at all concentrations i.e. 100 μg/ml, 200 μg/ml and 400 μg/ml. AuNPs have shown lowest activity at all concentrations. So the current study strongly confirms use of T.A bark extract as reducing agent for synthesis of metal NPs and opens up a new possibility of using these green synthesized NPs as biomedicines. We also suggest further in vivo investigation to report any side effects if present.

Biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has emerged as an eco-friendly and sustainable approach with diverse biological applications. This study presents synthesis of AgNPs-LS using a probiotic strain Lactobacillus salivarius (L. salivarius) and explores their multifaceted biological activities, including antibacterial, antibiofilm, anti-quorum sensing, antifungal, antioxidant, anticancer, anticoagulant and thrombolytic properties. The biosynthesis of AgNPs-LS was successfully achieved using L. salivarius cell free supernatants, resulting in well-characterized nanoparticles as confirmed by UV–Vis spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential analysis. The AgNPs-LS demonstrated potent antibacterial activity against different pathogenic bacteria (C. violaceum, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, E. coli and S. marcescens), emphasizing their potential in combating bacterial infections. Moreover, these AgNPs-LS were effective in inhibiting biofilm formation (>60 % at 1/2 MIC), a key mechanism of bacterial virulence, highlighting their utility in preventing biofilm-related infections. AgNPs-LS exhibited anti-quorum sensing activity, disrupting bacterial communication systems and potentially reducing virulence factor such as, violacein production in C. violaceum, pyocyanin production in P. aeruginosa and prodigiosin production in S. marcescens. Additionally, AgNPs-LS also exhibited notable antifungal activity towards a different pathogenic fungus (F. proliferatum, P. purpurogenum, A. niger and R. stolonifer). In terms of health applications, the AgNPs-LS displayed significant antioxidant activity, effectively scavenging DPPH• (IC50 = 42.65 μg/mL) and ABTS•+ (IC50 = 53.77 μg/mL) free radicals. Furthermore, AgNPs-LS showed cytotoxicity against breast cancer cells (MCF-7) (IC50 = 52.29 μg/mL), positioning them as promising candidates for cancer therapy. Moreover, AgNPs-LS were also shown promising anticoagulant and thrombolytic activities under practical conditions. Therefore, the biogenic synthesis of AgNPs-LS using L. salivarius offers a sustainable and cost-effective route for producing AgNPs with an array of biological activities. These AgNPs-LS have the potential to address various challenges in healthcare, ranging from antimicrobial, anticancer applications to biofilm inhibition, antioxidant therapy, anticoagulant and thrombolytic agents.

Ensuring safe drinking water remains a significant challenge due to the prevalence of waterborne diseases. While chlorine-based and UV-based methods effectively kill pathogens, they often generate harmful byproducts. Consequently, there's a pressing need for innovative techniques, such as utilizing silver nanoparticles(AgNPs) renowned for their antibacterial properties. In this study, a chemical reduction technique was employed to synthesize AgNPs. Subsequently, these AgNPs underwent comprehensive characterization using techniques such as FTIR, XRD,TGA and XPS. The synthesized nanoparticles were then applied for disinfecting spring water. The experimental design was meticulously planned using the central composite design method (CCD) from Response Surface Methodology (RSM), facilitated by Design Expert software. Three key factors: AgNPs, pH, and contact time were varied across three levels, resulting in a total of 20 designed experiments. These experiments were conducted in accordance with the specified run order, culminating in the achievement of maximum bacteria growth inhibition efficiency of 99.72 % at the optimal conditions of 0.01 mg/100 mL AgNPs dose, a pH of 6, and a contact time of 20 min. Overall, the findings of this study underscore the efficiency of AgNPs in disinfecting spring water.

In this study, we green synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag Nps) from Hybanthus enneaspermus leaves (HE-Ag NPs) and evaluated their antimicrobial and wound-healing properties. The synthesized HE-Ag NPs were characterized using various techniques, revealing face-centered polygonal structures, a well-dispersed appearance, and an average particle size of 42–51 nm. The antimicrobial effects of HE-Ag NPs and their embedded cotton fabrics were tested against several pathogens, showing effective inhibition of growth. The cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory properties of HE-Ag NPs were assessed using MTT assays on L929 and RAW 264.7 cells and by measuring inflammatory cytokine levels in LPS-treated RAW 264.7 cells. HE-Ag NPs did not affect the viability of L929 and RAW 264.7 cells and significantly reduced inflammatory cytokine levels. In vivo studies using an excision wound model demonstrated that HE-Ag NPs-loaded ointment significantly increased hydroxyproline, total protein, and antioxidant levels and enhanced the wound contraction rate. These findings suggest that HE-Ag NPs have potent antimicrobial properties and promote wound healing, indicating their potential for use in topical ointments for wound care.

Silver nanoparticles (SNPs) are a type of nanomaterial with wide applications in water treatment, medicine, food packaging, and industrial processes. Their unique optical, electrical, thermal conductivity, and biological properties distinguish them from other metal ions and liken them to noble metals like gold and copper. The present review explores the diverse applications, preparation techniques, mechanism of action of SNPs, and properties of SNPs focusing on their bactericidal activities and potential impacts on human health. Different preparation methods, encompassing chemical, physical, and biological techniques, were reviewed and analyzed to comprehend their effect on the properties and applications of SNPs. Studies revealed that the SNPs exhibit excellent antibactericidal properties. Mechanisms underlying their antimicrobial effects were explored, primarily focusing on pathogen-scavenging activities. Despite the promising benefits of SNPs, their potential toxicity to human health must be carefully managed. Regulatory standards, such as those set by WHO and USEPA; establish a maximum tolerable limit of 0.1 mg/L to mitigate health risks associated with SNP exposure. It is recommended to continue research into safer applications and alternative formulations of SNPs to minimize potential health risks while maximizing their beneficial applications across different industries.

In this study, biologically synthesized AgNPs were found to be effective against six hospital prevalent bacterial species (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis). AgNPs were deposited on the fabric and surgical blades using layer-by-layer and electrochemical deposition methods, respectively. The coated objects were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray. Coated fabric samples and blades when tested against six above mentioned bacterial species were found to be effective for all of them. Antibiofilm activity of AgNPs coated blade and fabric was tested against P. aeruginosa and SEM images of post-treated fabrics and blades showed clear bacterial cell distortion and inhibition. Furthermore, washing durability test revealed that AgNPs were strongly attached to the surface of fabric even after 20 cycles of hospital laundering. This unlocks the way to several technologically relevant applications of AgNPs coated surfaces to reduce the risks of nosocomial infections and as a proof of concept; we demonstrated efficient antibacterial properties of AgNPs coated cotton fabric and surgical blades.

In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by utilizing different volumes of silver nitrate (AgNO3) and a medicinally important protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA); subsequently, their anticancer and antibacterial activities were investigated. The volume of AgNO3 and BSA were varied to obtain physically and chemically stable NPs for better therapeutic effects. The synthesized BSA@AgNPs were characterized by spectroscopic and microscopic methods, such as FTIR, and UV–Vis spectroscopy, SEM/EDS, and TEM/SAED. The characterization results offer substantial proof for the successful preparation of non-aggregated stable BSA@AgNPs. The EDS analysis revealed the presence of Ag, C, and O, thus reaffirming the preparation of BSA-conjugated AgNPs. The anticancer efficacy of BSA@AgNPs was studied against colorectal (HCT-116) and HeLa cancerous cell lines. The anticancer results showed that the treatment of cancer cells with BSA@AgNPs decreased the number of cells compared with untreated cells. The NPs prepared with a moderate amount of BSA showed a better inhibiting property than the particles prepared with a high amount of BSA. The antibacterial activity of BSA@AgNPs was studied against gram-positive (S. aureus) and gram-negative (E. coli) bacteria. SEM and TEM analyses confirmed that S. aureus and E. coli cells were damaged upon exposure to BSA@AgNPs in the form of deep pits and cavities as opposed to untreated cells. The obtained results show that the green synthesized BSA@AgNPs could be used as potential anticancer and antibacterial drugs.

Background: Antibiotic resistance is a global threat to human health that leads to disasters. Acinetobacter baumannii cannot be controlled by the existing antibiotics, and it became challenging. Therefore, novel antibacterial agents are required to combat such threats. The aim of this project is to find a novel antimicrobial agent to treat this multi-drug resistant bacterium. Methods: The NisA gene was isolated from Lactococcus lactis spp. lactis and cloned into the pET-3a plasmid using Gibson cloning assembly. Purified Nisin from cloning was conjugated with silver nanoparticles. Finally, an assessment of antibacterial activity for each of the purified Nisin, Silver nanoparticles, and Nisin-Silver nanoparticles conjugate against the extensively drug-resistant A. baumannii was performed. Results: Nisin was successfully purified from cloned bacteria, and the concentration was 416 µg/ml. The conjugation of nisin and silver nanoparticles was analyzed by electron microscopy. The minimum inhibitory concentration of Nisin and silver nanoparticles against A. baumannii were 104 µg/ml and 125 µg/ml, respectively. While Nisin-silver nanoparticle conjugates showed potent antimicrobial activity with MIC 125–52 µg/ml in which silver nanoparticles increased the antimicrobial activity of nisin beyond its optimum concentration (104 µg/ml). ‎ Conclusion: The development of new antibacterial agents is necessary to control extensively drug-resistant bacteria. Nisin-silver conjugates showed more potent antimicrobial activity than when applied separately and gave hope to combat the multi-drug resistant A. baumannii.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are gaining substantial importance in the fields of biotechnology and medicine. Its composites are metal oxides, silicates, polymers, graphene, fibers, dendrimers, etc. The greenly synthesized AgNPs possess advantages over conventional AgNPs in the form of fewer chemical reagents and a low temperature and pressure for synthesis. The anticancer efficacy of AgNPs is attributed to a number of variables, including size, shape, surface-to-volume ratio, etc. There are several ways to make SNPs, but the green synthesis of AgNPs, which uses harmless chemicals and natural reagents, has gained significant interest and value. In this review, a comprehensive range of topics related to silver nanoparticles, the environmentally friendly method of producing them from plants such as Aloe barbadensis miller (aloe vera), which have a vast medicinal uses, and their anticancer effectiveness against breast cancer cells are discussed. The synthesized AgNPs are characterized via a range of methods, for instance, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), UV–visible spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). This review study includes an investigation into the stability of produced nanoparticles, the wide range of nanoparticle forms, the many techniques used in the conglomeration of nanoparticles, and comparison methods emphasizing the benefits of green synthesis relative to traditional techniques. Furthermore, the discussion explores the chemical and structural makeup of nanoparticles.

Cervical cancer is a significant global health issue among women due to its prevalence and impact on morbidity and mortality, especially in low- and middle-income countries. This underscores the critical necessity for the development of anticancer treatments that are not only more efficient but also safer. This study introduces a novel approach to combating cervical cancer by synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using aqueous Catharanthus roseus leaves extract and evaluating their anticancer activity. The aqueous extract of C. roseus showed remarkable potential to reduce silver ions rapidly. UV–Vis spectroscopy confirmed the formation of AgNPs, with a characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band observed at 429 nm. TEM/EDX and FE-SEM analysis confirmed the presence of spherical AgNPs with uniform size distribution. XRD analysis confirmed the face-centered cubic (FCC) structure of metallic silver in AgNPs. Moreover, AgNPs exhibited significant antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects on HeLa229 cells, with higher selectivity towards cancer cells compared to normal cells. Moreover, wound healing assays showed the robust antimetastatic potential of AgNPs by inhibiting cancer cell migration. The real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis demonstrated the impact of AgNPs on inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. Overall, these findings highlight the promising role of Ag-NPs synthesized from C. roseus extract as effective anticancer agents,offering a promising alternative to conventional chemotherapy with potentially reduced side effects and increased efficacy.

Photocatalysis is a recognized approach in the detoxification of pollutants and in water splitting. Such process is more appealing when it is driven by visible or solar light. In this context, we synthesized bismuth titanate perovskite oxide (Bi4Ti3O12, BTO) photocatalyst by sol–gel hydrothermal process. The resulting BTO materials was affected by the titania source and by the synthesis medium pH parameter. Titanium butoxide [Ti(n-BuO)4] was much better than titanium isopropoxide [Ti(i-PrO)4] in producing regular nanosheets with higher surface area, while 75 ml of 5.0 M sodium hydroxide was the optimum concentration for the synthesis of regular, thin, porous, almost equal size nanosheets. The photocatalytic activity of BTO was improved by loading silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by photo-assisted reduction. The optimum weight percent of loading AgNPs was found to be 1.5 % because it led to the highest light absorbance, the smallest band gap energy, the minimum rate of electron-hole recombination. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 1.5 wt% Ag/BTO reached as high as 99.0 % of rhodamine B (RhB, 100 ml, 6 ppm of initial concentration) under 70 min of irradiating visible light (>420 nm). Moreover, pH had a strong influence on the photocatalytic activity of 1.5 wt% Ag/BTO, with pH = 3.0 was the optimum, owing to its impact on the interaction between the positively-charged photocatalyst surface and the negatively-charged RhB molecules. It was found that superoxide radicals played key role in the photocatalytic activity.

Synthesized silver nanoparticles via laser liquid ablation were characterized using XRD, TEM, EDS, UV–Vis, and Raman spectroscopy. The AgNPs were then conjugated with HCQ at different concentrations. The study aimed to explore the effectiveness of HCQ against malaria and autoimmune diseases as well as how conjugating AgNPs with HCQ would broaden its activity against various infections and diseases, owing to the antimicrobial activity of AgNPs. The electronic and vibrational study of HCQ and its mixture showed a successful conjugation of the two, which would increase the potent of HCQ against SARS Coronavirus (SARS-COV-2) infection. Steady-state absorption measurements revealed a broadband peak at around 337.4 nm (3.68 eV), corresponding to a π to π* transition in the quinoline ring of the HCQ molecule. In addition, the AgNPs Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) band centred around 408 nm exhibited an intensity decrease with an increase in the concentration of HCQ. The experimental Raman spectra exhibited bands similar to the density function theory (DFT) calculated spectra centred at 392 cm−1, 768 cm−1, 1392 cm−1, 2928 cm−1, 3224 cm−1, 3656 cm−1, and 3808 cm−1. TEM, EDS, and XRD analysis confirmed the formation of 8.75 nm AgNPs. Understanding the electronic and vibrational spectroscopic properties of the interaction between HCQ and AgNPs, as deduced from the spectroscopic results supported by DFT, can significantly benefit researchers in the pharmaceutical industry. Researchers could apply this knowledge to overcome drug resistance, repurpose existing drugs, and reduce the side effects of conventional clinically approved drugs.

Hyperlipidemia is a metabolic disorder characterized by an imbalance in lipid and lipoprotein levels, which can contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases. Despite the availability of current antihyperlipidemic medications, a significant number of individuals continue to experience the effects of this condition. Therefore, there is a need to explore innovative pharmaceuticals to address hyperlipidemia. The utilization of nanobiotechnological approaches, specifically materials ranging from 1 to 100 nm in size, has garnered considerable attention in the management of antihyperlipidemia. One potential innovative therapy involves the use of nanosized gold and silver particles synthesized using environmentally friendly methods. Animal research has yielded promising results regarding the impact of these biologically engineered nanostructures on serum lipid profiles. However, it is important to note that a comprehensive review discussing the efficacy of these biogenic nanostructures in antihyperlipidemic therapy is currently lacking. In this review, our objective is not only to provide an overview of recent advancements in the biosynthesis of nanomaterials, but also to present animal-based evidence supporting the effectiveness of environmentally fabricated colloidal gold and silver particles in antihyperlipidemic therapy. Our findings indicate that, in most studies, the administration of bioengineered nanosized gold and silver particles led to a significant reduction in triglyceride (TG), very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and total cholesterol levels, while concurrently increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. Despite the favorable performance of these nanomaterials in antihyperlipidemia management, further investigations are necessary to determine the optimal dosage and assess acute and chronic toxicity.

The extraction and modification of naturally-occurring compounds are widely performed due to their valuable medicinal and physical properties. Herin, we reported the extraction of bis-demethoxycurcumin from Ragbrai turmeric root. The isolated derivative was characterized by X-ray diffraction, IR, and NMR spectroscopy. Also, the green synthesis of bis-demethoxycurcumin chitosan silver BDMC-Ag-Ch nanoparticles is illustrated. These nanoparticles are identified by atomic force microscopy AFM and exhibit average particle size ∼ 53.41 nm The crystalline structure was confirmed by XRD analysis, which showed distinct peaks corresponding to silver oxide nanoparticles and Zeta power measurements revealed stable dispersion of the nanoparticles, indicating a good chitosan coating on the surface of bis-demethoxycurcumin Ag nanoparticles. The absorption bands at 240 and 405 nm are due to oxygen atom (n → π*) and aromatic (π → π*) transitions in curcumin and Chitosan molecules. The photoluminescence (PL) study of synthesized BDMC-Ag-Ch nanoparticles demonstrated an existence of two emission excited states in light-emitting, namely local excited (LE) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) emission states, due to the aromatic conjugation system within BDMC units and intra charge transfer between the silver ion and organic part.

The current study investigates the utilization of gum acacia (GA) & tragacanth gum (TG) for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (NPs) and their subsequent incorporation into hydrogels for potential applications in drug delivery (DD). Cefoperazone, an antibiotic drug, was encapsulated into hydrogels to enhance their antimicrobial activity. Copolymers were characterized by UV–Vis, TEM, FESEM, AFM, XPS, XRD, FTIR, TGA and DSC techniques. UV–Vis spectroscopy revealed the formation of NPs at a wavelength of 436 nm with an optical density of 2.65. TEM images depicted AgNPs with an average size of 37.29 ± 7.25 nm with their uniform distribution. XRD analysis demonstrated distinct crystalline peaks at 2θ = 38.34o, 43.80o, 64.60o and 77.42o attributed to AgNPs. XPS peaks observed at 368 & 374 eV, corresponding to the 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 modes of silver, respectively, confirmed the incorporation of AgNPs in the polymer matrix. Hydrogels demonstrated pH responsive sustained release of cefoperazone. The diffusion mechanism was non-Fickian and described by the Higuchi kinetic model. In the DPPH assay, copolymers exhibited a 32.36 % inhibition of free radicals, whereas in the F–C reagent assay, antioxidant activity was measured as 22.25 μg equivalent of gallic acid. The copolymers displayed blood compatible nature, as evidenced from haemolysis (2.11 ± 0.03 %) and thrombogenicity (74.71 ± 1.63 %) results. The interactions of copolymer with intestinal membrane attributed to mucoadhesive properties and required detachment force of 55.30 ± 2.80 mN to separate from the biological membrane. Growth of E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus bacteria was inhibited by copolymers with and without antibiotic drug. These characteristic properties of copolymers make them ideal materials for DD carriers.

A rapid, cost-effective, and sample-preparation-free approach is proposed for the quantitative detection of arsenic in drinking water, using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). This fabrication entailed comprehensive optimization of chemically synthesized silver colloidal nanoparticles, focusing on parameters such as centrifugation time and speed to attain maximal nanoparticle concentration while mitigating interference from trisodium citrate and other chemical agents. Subsequently, SERS substrates were fabricated by depositing a concentrated drop of colloidal silver nanoparticles onto hydrophobic silicon substrates using the drop-coating technique. The drying process induced a coffee-ring effect, resulting in a pronounced spatial variation of nanoparticle concentration, with significantly higher densities observed in the peripheral ring regions compared to the central regions of the substrate. These regions possess the ability to enhance the Raman spectrum of arsenic, enabling the detection of arsenic at concentrations as low as 50 ppb. This method can prove highly valuable for initial field analyses of drinking water.

The emergence of metallic nanoparticles through green synthesis has garnered significant recognition, shaping global research efforts towards eco-friendly practices, often termed as the green revolution. Specifically, the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has made considerable strides in the past decade, becoming a prominent fixture in the realm of science and technology. The study explores the synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Cassia fistula L. flowers extract through chemical co-precipitation (CM_AgNPs) and green methods (CFF_AgNPs). Characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), attenuated total reflectance fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), revealed irregular morphologies with agglomeration, polycrystalline nature, and intrinsic functional groups involved in capping AgNPs. Antioxidant assessment demonstrated superior antioxidative activity (84.48 %) in green-synthesized nanoparticles compared to chemically synthesized ones (75.87 %), and they exhibited dose-dependent anti-inflammatory effects with IC50 values CFF_AgNPs_30.19 μg/mL and CM_AgNPs _34.14 μg/mL respectively. The lower IC50 value of CFF_AgNPs_30.19 μg/mL signifies finer and better activity due to the presence of phytochemicals present in it. Whereas for CM_AgNPs the IC50 value is a 34.14 μg/mL which is solely due to AgNPs. To ensure the promising therapeutic aspects of AgNPs with a careful assessment of their safety profile, cytotoxicity of AgNPs on HEP3B cancer cells was evaluated through MTT assay, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level measurement. In the in vitro cytotoxicity evaluation, HEP3B demonstrated more pronounced dose-dependent adverse effects upon exposure to CFF_AgNPs compared to CM_AgNPs. This study underscores the bioactive potential of Cassia fistula L. mediated AgNPs, suggesting promising applications in biomedicine with environmental sustainability. The findings contribute to the growing interest in green synthesis methods for metallic nanoparticles and their potential benefits in various fields.

Silver nanoparticles are becoming increasingly popular because of their potential applications in bioengineering and medical diagnostics. Nanoparticles possess distinctive features, including increased surface-to-volume ratio and superior magnetic properties, which render them well-suited for a range of biological uses. They have a multi-functionalization, high surface plasmon resonance, large surface area, stable nature, and easy processing. However, silver nanoparticles have exciting potential for biomedical applications, including biomaterials, detection and diagnosis platforms, formulations, drug delivery, and medical device coatings. This typical review provides a comprehensive overview of the current research on silver nanoparticles in biomedical applications, highlighting different methods for creating nanoparticles, exploring their antimicrobial properties in various medical fields, and examining their prospective biological uses.
