Los pacientes con Enfermedad Pulmonar Obstructiva Crónica (EPOC) junto con desarrollar las alteraciones respiratorias propias de la patología desarrollan también alteraciones multisistémicas que repercuten principalmente en la musculatura respiratoria y periférica, reduciendo la capacidad de tolerancia física del paciente a las actividades diarias. Junto al tratamiento médico, la kinesiología representa una importante herramienta terapéutica, ya que se orienta a mantener las capacidades físicas del paciente, tanto en sus condicionantes respiratorias como motoras. El objetivo de este artículo es mostrar la importancia de la kinesiología en este grupo de pacientes, tanto durante su periodo de hospitalización como en el período de rehabilitación después del alta.

Increasing salinity is a concern for biodiversity in many freshwater ecosystems globally. Single species laboratory toxicity tests show major differences in freshwater organism survival depending on the specific ions that comprise salinity types and/or their ion ratios. Toxicity has been shown to be reduced by altering ionic composition, despite increasing (total) salinity. For insistence, single species tests show the toxicity of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 , which commonly is a large proportion of the salts from coalbeds) to freshwater invertebrates is reduced by adding magnesium (Mg 2+ ) or chloride (Cl - ). However, it is uncertain whether reductions in mortality observed in single-species laboratory tests predict effects within populations, communities and to ecosystem processes in more complex multi-species systems both natural and semi-natural. Here we report the results of an outdoor multi-species mesocosm experiment to determine if the effects of NaHCO 3 are reduced by increasing the concentrations of Mg 2+ or Cl - on: a) stream macroinvertebrate populations and communities; b) benthic chlorophyll-a and; c) the ecosystem process of leaf litter decomposition. We found a large effect of a high NaHCO 3 concentration (≈4.45 mS/cm) with reduced abundances of multiple taxa, reduced emergence of adult insects and reduced species richness, altered community structure and increased leaf litter breakdown rates but no effect on benthic chlorophyll-a. However, despite predictions based on laboratory findings, we found no evidence that the addition of either Mg 2+ or Cl - altered the effect of NaHCO 3 . In semi-natural environments such as mesocosms, and natural environments, organisms are subject to varying temperature and habitat factors, while also interacting with other species and trophic levels (e.g. predation, competition, facilitation), which are absent in single species laboratory tests. Motor control, a ubiquitous part of driving, requires increased cognitive controlled processing in older adults relative to younger adults. However, the influence of aging on motor-related neural mechanisms in the context of driving has rarely been studied. The present study aimed to identify age-related changes in cognitive control and attention allocation during a simulated steering task, using electroencephalography. Midfrontal theta, a marker for cognitive control, and posterior alpha power, a marker for attention allocation, were measured in a total of 26 young, 25 middle-aged, and 28 older adults. By adapting driving speed, the difficulty level of this steering task was individualized for each participant. Results show age-related changes in midfrontal theta power, but not in posterior alpha power, despite similar steering accuracy across age groups. Specifically, only younger and, to a lesser extent, middle-aged adults exhibited increased theta power while driving through more demanding curved segments relative to straight segments. In contrast, theta power upregulation was absent in older adults, suggesting a saturation of cognitive resources while driving, possibly due to a limitation in resource capacity, or less automatic motor-related neural processing., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Objective: Helplines are generally a population-level resource for providing free, timely, easy-to-access, and anonymous counseling and/or information. Helplines have been developed and widely implemented for specific use by young people. The current study aimed to systematically review the literature to determine the status of research into the use of helplines among young people., Method: Following the PRISMA checklist, 5 electronic databases were searched using relevant terms for literature published until May 2020. The extracted studies were summarized with the intention of identifying key themes that highlighted common findings, key implications, and important gaps in understanding., Results: A total of 52 articles fitting study inclusion criteria were identified. Most studies were quantitative papers from the United States and Australia. The types of helpline interactions studied were a mixture of telephone-based and SMS/text-based interactions. Three major themes were identified: awareness of and engagement with helpline services, nature of problems faced by young people, and service-related factors. Subthemes were use and awareness, barriers to help seeking, psychosocial problems, suicidality, telephone- versus text-based interactions, counselor-caller interaction, and provision of services to historically and systemically marginalized groups., Conclusion: It appears that helplines may provide a beneficial service to youths, and that myriad psychosocial concerns provide the basis for calling. The literature is limited by a lack of controlled trials, on one hand, and complex methodological/ethical barriers preventing such trials, on the other hand. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) examination of nanoparticles requires their placement on some manner of support - either TEM grid membranes or part of the material itself, as in many heterogeneous catalyst systems - but a systematic quantification of the practical imaging limits of this approach has been lacking. Here we address this issue through a statistical evaluation of how nanoparticle size and substrate thickness affects the ability to resolve structural features of interest in HRTEM images of metallic nanoparticles on common support membranes. The visibility of lattice fringes from crystalline Au nanoparticles on amorphous carbon and silicon supports of varying thickness was investigated with both conventional and aberration-corrected TEM. Over the 1-4nm nanoparticle size range examined, the probability of successfully resolving lattice fringes differed significantly as a function both of nanoparticle size and support thickness. Statistical analysis was used to formulate guidelines for the selection of supports and to quantify the impact a given support would have on HRTEM imaging of crystalline structure. For nanoparticles ≥1nm, aberration-correction was found to provide limited benefit for the purpose of visualizing lattice fringes; electron dose is more predictive of lattice fringe visibility than aberration correction. These results confirm that the ability to visualize lattice fringes is ultimately dependent on the signal-to-noise ratio of the HRTEM images, rather than the point-to-point resolving power of the microscope. This study provides a benchmark for HRTEM imaging of crystalline supported metal nanoparticles and is extensible to a wide variety of supports and nanostructures., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Melita plumulosa is an epibenthic, detritivorous amphipod found in estuaries along the eastern coast of Australia. It has been utilized as a test organism in rapid ten to thirteen days reproduction toxicity tests for sediment quality assessment. The fecundity of females in the toxicity test has been found to be inhibited by exposure of the amphipods to contaminated sediments enriched with zinc and other metals. This study investigated the proposal that interference in vitellogenesis is the cause of reproductive toxicity of metals in crustaceans. Inspection of the ovaries from amphipods on day 6 of the test either from control or Zn/Pb/Cd/Cu-spiked sediment, that were nearing completion of vitellogenesis, showed that the females in all treatments were producing similar numbers of oocytes undergoing secondary vitellogenesis. The distribution of the Zn, Cu and Pb in the oocytes and ventral caeca of females was examined by X-ray fluorescence microscopy. Elemental mapping revealed a dense accumulation of Zn in primary oocytes and a uniform distribution of Zn and Cu in the secondary oocytes in all treatments. Zn and Cu were also observed to be uniformly distributed in the ventral caeca. Pb was not detected in either of these tissues. The apparent normal morphology and the typical number of oocytes undergoing secondary vitellogenesis suggest that vitellogenesis was not being disrupted by Pb displacing Zn in the metal-binding domain of vitellogenin in amphipods exposed to the contaminated sediment during the test. Hypothesizing that rapid estrogen signaling could be modulated from different estrogen receptors with unique localization patterns, a number of groups have attempted to design drug conjugates that target or restrict compounds to specific subcellular compartments. This article will briefly discuss the history of using conjugates to dissect rapid estrogen signaling and different strategies to attempt to target estrogens and antiestrogens to different locations. It will also detail some of the potential issues that can arise with different types of conjugates, using examples drawn from the authors' own work., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. The herbicides amitrole and glyphosate, and its metabolite aminomethyl-phosphonic acid (AMPA), in water samples have been directly analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography using an electrochemical (EC) detector. Limits of detection of 0.3 microg mL(-1) for glyphosate, 0.05 microg mL(-1) for AMPA and 0.03 microg mL(-1) for amitrole were comparable to those obtained by other authors using EC and also by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, but the latter method requires derivatisation and pre-concentration of the sample whereas EC methods show similar sensitivity without the need of any derivatisation. The method was specifically designed to analyse extracts from passive samplers used for monitoring of polar herbicide residues in waters. To this purpose, three types of Empore disks were tested for their ability to adsorb and desorb these ionic, polar analytes. A procedure for their extraction from the membranes and reducing the interferences from other substances present in natural waters (i.e. humic acids) is described. To monitor genetic diversity and environmental contamination in eastern Australia, toxicity studies have employed the sensitive benthic amphipod Melita plumulosa. The goal of this study was to examine the genetic and life-history variability of natural populations of M. plumulosa from the Parramatta (polluted) and Hawkesbury (unpolluted) Rivers. The underlying genetics of the populations in these distinct waterways was examined at one mitochondrial (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI)) and one nuclear (ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region 1 (ITS1)) locus. Seven unique haplotypes for COI were found amongst animals from the Parramatta River, while animals from the Hawkesbury River showed a complete absence of genetic variation at this locus. At ITS1 a total of two sequence variants were found amongst Parramatta River amphipods and three sequence variants among Hawkesbury River animals, with no common variants across the two river systems. To establish whether genetic differences were associated with organismal responses to toxicant exposure, two life-history trait variables (female head length as an estimator of amphipod size and female fecundity) were analyzed. Life-history trait analyses showed that females from the Hawkesbury River were significantly larger and more fecund. These data have critical implications for toxicity tests, the use of laboratory cultures for testing purposes, and environmental contamination in Sydney Harbor.

An artificial neural network (ANN) was employed to model the chromatographic response surface for the linear gradient separation of 10 herbicides that are commonly detected in storm run-off water in agricultural catchments. The herbicides (dicamba, simazine, 2,4-D, MCPA, triclopyr, atrazine, diuron, clomazone, bensulfuron-methyl and metolachlor) were separated using reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography and detected with a photodiode array detector. The ANN was trained using the pH of the mobile phase and the slope of the acetonitrile/water gradient as input variables. A total of nine experiments were required to generate sufficient data to train the ANN to accurately describe the retention times of each of the herbicides within a defined experimental space of mobile phase pH range 3.0-4.8 and linear gradient slope 1-4% acetonitrile/min. The modelled chromatographic response surface was then used to determine the optimum separation within the experimental space. This approach allowed the rapid determination of experimental conditions for baseline resolution of all 10 herbicides. Illustrative examples of determination of these components in Milli-Q water, Sydney mains water and natural water samples spiked at 0.5-1mug/L are shown. Recoveries were over 70% for solid-phase extraction using Waters Oasis((R)) HLB 6cm(3) cartridges.

The toxicity of the organochlorine pesticide endosulfan to macroinvertebrate assemblages was tested using a system of 24 artificial streams. In separate experiments, the effects of 12- and 48-h exposure to aqueous endosulfan were assessed. No-observed-effect concentrations (NOEC) for endosulfan on macroinvertebrate assemblages were 8.69 and 1.00 microg/L for the 12- and 48-h exposure studies, respectively. In both studies, changes were driven by reduced abundances of the mayfly, Jappa kutera. Algal blooms occurred in the 48-h exposure experiment in streams that received the 6.87 or 30.70 microg/L treatments. These effects occurred at concentrations that might occur as a result of episodic events such as accidental overspray or rainstorms. By establishing a causal link between endosulfan and changes to macroinvertebrate assemblages, this study adds further weight to the hypothesis that endosulfan is a major contributor to changes observed in rivers of the cotton-growing region of New South Wales, Australia during the pesticide spray season.

The application of biochemical measurements that can be used as individual biomarkers of impaired biological function in invertebrates is reviewed to evaluate whether biochemical biomarkers of aquatic invertebrates can predict changes in natural populations. Biomarkers that measure toxic effects at the molecular level (e.g., the inhibition of brain acetylcholinesterase activity by organophosphorus pesticides) have been shown to provide rapid quantitative predictions of a toxic effect upon individuals in laboratory studies. Such biomarkers should not be used as a replacement for conventional aquatic monitoring techniques, but should be applied as supplementary approaches for demonstrating links between sublethal biochemical and adverse effects in natural populations in field studies. The research challenge for using biomarker measurements in aquatic invertebrates is to predict effects at the population level from effects at the individual level measured upon individuals collected in the field.

The acute toxicity of four chemical species of selenium to juvenile amphipods (Corophium sp.) was assessed in water-only tests. The seleno-amino acid compounds seleno-L-methionine and seleno-DL-cystine were found to be more toxic (96-h LC(50) values of 1.5 and 12.7 microg Se/L) than the inorganic selenite and selenate (96-h NOEC values of 58 and 116 microg Se/L). New marine sediment testing procedures were developed using juvenile and adult Corophium sp. Both life stages were highly sensitive to seleno-L-methionine-spiked sediment. The juveniles were approximately five times more sensitive, with a 10-day LC(50) of 1.6 microg Se/g (dry weight) compared to 7.6 microg Se/g (dry weight) for the adults. Sediment collected from three sites in Lake Macquarie, a marine barrier lagoon with elevated concentrations of total selenium, had no effect on the survival of adult Corophium over 10 days. The toxicity of seleno-L-methionine to other amphipod species occurring in Lake Macquarie was assessed in water-only tests, with Paracalliope australis being highly sensitive (96-h LC(50) 2.58 microg Se/L).

The toxicity of the organochlorine pesticide endosulfan to macroinvertebrate communities was tested using a system of 24 artificial streams. Macroinvertebrate communities in the streams were exposed to a range of endosulfan concentrations for a 12-h period and then monitored for 96 h. Endosulfan was prebound to fine river sediment and applied to the streams as a contaminated sediment slurry. This did not cause changes in the structure of benthic communities; however, significant changes (P<0.05) in the abundance of several macroinvertebrate taxa in drift were detected in the streams receiving the highest (6.14 microg/L) dose. Increased drift may have implications for recolonization processes in lowland rivers, and, as such, pulses of contaminated sediment are likely to result in significant effects on macroinvertebrate populations and communities. This study highlights the utility of artificial stream systems for detecting sublethal effects and the need for population and community-level endpoints to be included in such studies.

Tumours from four individuals in a breast and ovarian cancer family with a known deleterious germline BRCA1 mutation, were analyzed using BRCA1 antibodies. In addition, we examined tumours from 96 female patients with early-onset breast cancer, who were not selected because of any family history. Paraffin-embedded tumour sections were examined by standard immunohistochemical analysis. Three familial tumours from BRCA1 carriers displayed focal negativity. This observation was not seen in a non-mutation carrier from the same family. It was found that 9/96 (9%) early-onset breast tumours had total BRCA1 negativity. In addition, 2/2 (100%) medullary breast carcinomas displayed negativity for both antibodies. Our results indicate that BRCA1 antibodies can discriminate between familial tumours with and without a deleterious mutation from one family. Further mutation studies in early-onset breast cancer group will be necessary to evaluate the use of immunohistochemistry as a rapid, initial screening technique to identify BRCA1 mutations.

Control of faciolingual tooth inclinations is obtained by using rectangular wire with third-order bends and standard edgewise brackets or by using a straight wire in a preadjusted appliance system. Ideal faciolingual inclinations have been determined previously by measuring facial surface contours relative to coronal long axes. This study evaluates faciolingual inclinations based on occlusal table inclinations relative to occlusal planes. The samples compared include untreated ideal occlusions and malocclusions in three different vertical skeletal growth patterns. Faciolingual inclinations of first molars and central incisors were measured relative to the occlusal plane and to selected cephalometric angular measurements. Statistical comparisons between groups revealed significant differences in the inclinations of the upper incisor relative to the occlusal plane (U1-OP) and the inclination of the occlusal plane relative to sella nasion (OP-SN). No statistically significant intergroup differences were found in the inclination of the lower incisor relative to the occlusal plane (L1-OP) or in the faciolingual inclinations of the maxillary and mandibular first molars. On the basis of the large intergroup differences in the mean angle between the occlusal plane and sella nasion (OP-SN), the use of straight-wire appliance therapy is discussed in terms of the potential for creating differential moments. Because differential moments may facilitate or hinder treatment goals, the practitioner must know the biomechanical sequelae resulting from occlusal plane-sella nasion variations, which differ from normative values when preadjusted brackets are used.

A distinct odontogenic cyst of developmental origin, the lateral periodontal cyst has characteristic clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic findings. In addition to inflammatory lesions, lateral periodontal cysts may appear similar radiographically to an ameloblastoma or odontogenic keratocyst in its early stage; therefore, clinical and histologic correlations are necessary to establish the diagnosis and ensure proper treatment.

A case of an inflammatory nasal polyp extending through an oroantral fistula and appearing as an intraoral soft tissue lesion is discussed. Although this is apparently a rare occurrence, the nature of the lesion was suggested by the history, clinical appearance, and radiographic findings. Surgical intervention and removal of the inflammatory lesion was followed by complete healing with closure of the oroantral fistula.
