Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in remodeling the extracellular matrix, but also participate in the development of physiopathologic processes. As they are overexpressed in different types of epithelial cancers, it has been suggested that their level expression could explain the different biological behavior between odontogenic cysts and tumors. Here, we compared the expression level and proteolytic activities of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in dental follicles, dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts and unicystic ameloblastomas. We found similar expression of MMP-2 in all tissues, but a higher activity in cystic and tumor lesions than follicles. On the other hand, MMP-9 expression and activity was greater in cysts and ameloblastoma than in follicles. However, no differences were found in expression or activity of both MMPs between cystic and tumor injuries, suggesting that they could participate in the growth of these lesions, but they cannot define their different biological behavior., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest., (© 2022 Craniofacial Research Foundation. Ceramic materials such as calcium phosphates (CaPs) with a composition similar to the mineral phase of bones and polymeric polylactic acid (PLA) are potential candidates for the manufacturing of scaffolds to act as bone substitutes and for tissue engineering applications, due to their bioresorbability and biocompatibility. Variables such as porosity, topography, morphology, and mechanical properties play an essential role in the scaffolds response. In this paper, a polymer/ceramic composite filament of 1.7 mm in diameter based on PLA and biphasic calcium phosphates (BCPs) was obtained by hot-melt extrusion in a single screw extruder. The particles of BCP were obtained by solution-combustion synthesis, and the PLA used was commercial grade. The BCPs ceramics were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopic (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET). It was possible to confirm that the main inorganic phases were hydroxyapatite (HAP) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) with grain sizes below 100 nm and with high porosity. The Filaments obtained are a bit fragile but were able to be used in fused deposition modelling (FDM) using low-cost commercial printers. The filaments were characterized by SEM and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Zika virus (ZIKV) is considered an emerging infectious disease of high clinical and epidemiological relevance. The epidemiological emergency generated by the virus in Latin America and Southeast Asia in 2014 evidenced the urgent need for rapid and acute diagnostic tools. The current laboratory diagnosis of ZIKV is based on molecular and serological methods. However, molecular tools need expensive and sophisticated equipment and trained personnel; and serological detection may suffer from cross-reactivity. In this context, genosensors offer an attractive alternative for field-ready, early and accurate diagnosis of ZIKV. This work reports on the development of genosensors for the differential detection of ZIKV and its discrimination from dengue (DENV) and chikungunya (CHIKV) homologous arboviruses. We designed specific capture and signal probes by bioinformatics, and prove their specificity to amplify the target genetic material by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The designed biotinylated capture and digoxigenin (Dig)-labeled signal probes hybridized the target in a sandwich-type format. An anti-Dig antibody labeled with the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme allowed for both optical and electrochemical detection. The genosensors detected the ZIKV genetic material in spiked serum, urine, and saliva samples and cDNA from infected patients, discriminating them from the DENV and ZIKV genetic material. A very sensitive electrochemical biosensor to determine totals triglycerides (TGs) in serum samples has been developed. It is based on the electrochemical oxidation of glycerol at glassy carbon electrodes modified with magnetic nanoparticles bonded to lipase enzyme and copper oxide nanoparticles, both supported on a multiwalled carbon nanotubes/pectin dispersion. Glycerol is produced by enzymatic reaction between the TGs present in samples and the lipase immobilized. The quantification of triglycerides was performed by amperometric measurements. The proposed electrochemical biosensor improves the performance of others methods developed for the TGs quantification. The determination of TGs does not need a pretreatment of serum samples. The PLS-1 algorithm was used for the quantification of TGs. According to this algorithm, the of detection and quantification limits were from 3.2 × 10 -3 g L -1 to 3.6 × 10 -3 g L -1 , and from 9.6 × 10 -3 to 1.1 × 10 -2 g L -1 , respectively. The sensitivity was 1.64 × 10 -6 A L g -1 . The proposed electrochemical biosensor exhibited a very good performance, a stability of 20 days, very good reproducibility and repeatability, and it is presented as a very good alternative for the determination of TGs in human serum clinical samples., (Copyright © 2018. The traditional drugs used in the treatment of cutaneous leishmanisis (CL) have multiple disadvantages, such as high toxicity, high costs, and more recently the appearance of parasites resistant to those drugs. For this reason, some research has focused on the development of new drugs or treatment therapies. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) that involves the use of a photosensitive or photosensitizing compound capable of producing reactive oxygen species to which Leishmania parasites are sensitive, has emerged as an alternative for the treatment of CL. However, some of these sensitizing compounds exhibit some toxicity (cytotoxicity, allergic reaction, etc), low selectivity, and some of them are insoluble in aqueous media limiting their use. Therefore, the PDT can be improved using encapsulation systems which protect drugs, prevent their degradation, help them overcome physical barriers and increase their selectivity. In this study, we propose the use of calcium phosphate as a potential encapsulant or photodynamic support for photoactive drugs, using hypericin (HY) as a photosensitizer agent. The self-combustion route was used to synthesize the CP nanostructures. The structure and morphology of CP nanoparticles were evaluated via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Phases rich in hydroxyapatite and CP β phase, with granular morphology and an average grain size of 42.9 nm were obtained. The encapsulation uptake and the interactions between HY and the encapsulated system were evaluated by fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. Approximately 13% of HY was enapsulated per 1 μg of nanoparticles of calcium phosphate. Composites were submitted to in vitro assays of cytotoxicity and anti-leishmanial activity. Hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of Annona muricata pericarp were tested in vitro against Leishmania braziliensis and L. panamensis promastigotes, and against cell line U-937. The ethyl acetate extract was more active than the other extracts and even of Glucantime used as reference substance. Its fractionation led to the isolation of three acetogenins--annonacin, annonacin A and annomuricin A.
