Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) can be triggered by several antiresorptive and antiangiogenic medications, including bisphosphonates (BRONJ), denosumab (DRONJ), and other agents used to treat osteoporosis and metastatic bone cancer. Prosthodontists and surgeons continue to face new challenges because of this condition. Despite the current evidence showing that extensive surgical intervention and laser surgery have the highest healing rates, surgical reconstruction is not always possible for large jaw defects requiring prosthetic reconstruction. Moreover, surgical treatment may not be an option in some patients because of other medical conditions. In these patients, MRONJ may develop into a chronic disease with limited resolution and they may seek prosthetic rehabilitation for aesthetic and functional reasons. Therefore, prosthetic intervention may be necessary for some patients with MRONJ even in the absence of a surgical defect. Denture trauma has been reported to be a risk factor for MRONJ, and few reports have discussed the prosthodontic considerations needed for patients with this condition. The aim of this review is to highlight the prosthodontic considerations that would decrease the risk of triggering MRONJ in susceptible patients.

Biobanks are not-for-profit services for the collection, processing, storage and distribution of biological samples and data for research and diagnostic purposes. In dentistry, biological materials and data obtained from questionnaires investigating oral conditions can be stored and used for large-scale studies on oral and systemic diseases. To give some examples: gene expression microarrays obtained on biobanked specimens were used in the identification of genetic alterations in oral cancer; efforts to identify genetic mechanisms behind dental caries have been based on an integrative analysis of transcriptome-wide associations and messenger RNA expression. One of the largest studies on facial pain was conducted using Biobank data. Cryopreservation of dental pulp stem cells is a common practice in tooth biobanks. With the exception of teeth and pulp, also leftover oral soft and hard tissues may represent a source of healthy samples that has rarely been exploited as yet. While biobanks are increasingly attracting the attention of the scientific community and becoming economically sustainable, a systematic approach to this resource in dentistry seems to be lacking. This review illustrates the applications of biobanking in dentistry, describing biobanked pathological and healthy samples and data, and discussing future developments.

BACKGROUND: A converging epidemic of Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is observed over past two decades. LTBI is a state of persistent immune stimulation by Mycobacterium tuberculosis but with no active clinical manifestation. Also, there has been as increasing trend for incidence of cardiovascular problems in patients suffering from latent TB infection. Reportedly, the risk of coronary artery disease spikes up to 1.52 times in patient with latent TB infection. Considering the fact that cardiovascular diseases account to be leading cause of death globally, we found a dire need to investigate the role of Latent TB infection in producing coronary artery disease and unveil this unconventional relationship. PURPOSE: We aim to conduct a meta-analysis to evaluate Latent TB infection as a predictor for coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: A systemic search was conducted on electronic databases (PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar) from inception to 24(th) June 2022. Studies meeting predefined inclusion criteria underwent statistical analysis on Review Manager 5.4.1. The development of cardiotoxicity induced by cancer treatments has emerged as a significant clinical problem, both in the short run, as it may influence drug administration in chemotherapeutic protocols, and in the long run, because it may determine adverse cardiovascular outcomes in survivors of various malignant diseases. Therefore, early detection of anticancer drug-related cardiotoxicity is an important clinical target to improve prevention of adverse effects and patient care. Today, echocardiography is the first-line cardiac imaging techniques used for identifying cardiotoxicity. Cardiac dysfunction, clinical and subclinical, is generally diagnosed by the reduction of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and global longitudinal strain (GLS). However, myocardial injury detected by echocardiography is preceded by other alterations, such as myocardial perfusion and mitochondrial and metabolic dysfunction, that can only be recognized by second-level imaging techniques, like cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and nuclear imaging, which, using targeted radiotracers, may help to provide information on the specific mechanisms of cardiotoxicity. In this review, we focus on the current and emerging role of CMR, as a critical diagnostic tool of cardiotoxicity in the very early phase, due to its availability and because it allows the contemporary detection of functional alterations, tissue alterations (mainly performed using T1, T2 mapping with the evaluation of extracellular volume-ECV) and perfusional alteration (evaluated with rest-stress perfusion) and, in the next future, even metabolic changes. Moreover, in the subsequent future, the use of Artificial Intelligence and big data on imaging parameters (CT, CMR) and oncoming molecular imaging datasets, including differences for gender and countries, may help predict cardiovascular toxicity at its earliest stages, avoiding its progression, with precise tailoring of patients’ diagnostic and therapeutic pathways.

As the circular supply chain (CSC) gains traction in literature and practice, some academic groups are developing new fields that proceed from the CSC as a precisely technical concept. In order to examine the trends of CSC over time, to define how previous researchers have conceptualized the CSC ideology, and to identify the barriers to CSC adoption in businesses operations. This systematic review of the literature (n = 55) examines and discusses the disparate body of knowledge on supply chains (SCs). The paper claims that there are still differences across the circular economy (CE) definitions because of alleged antecedents and scopes, which has led to several research streams. However, CSC's goal remained the same: to encourage sustainable strategies that rejected the traditional linear paradigm that had harmed the environment. In order to be included in future practices and approaches, eight significant, interdisciplinary issues were discovered using SLR, along with the corresponding sub-challenges. These difficulties were discussed in this paper. Aiming to address the current concerns about balancing the environmental and economic perspectives, this study will provide guidelines to future researchers to identify the challenges from a real-world point of view by taking into account the social, environmental, and economic perspectives altogether.

Neuromuscular diseases cause abnormal joint movements and drastically alter gait patterns in patients. The analysis of abnormal gait patterns can provide clinicians with an in-depth insight into implementing appropriate rehabilitation therapies. Wearable sensors are used to measure the gait patterns of neuromuscular patients due to their non-invasive and cost-efficient characteristics. FSR and IMU sensors are the most popular and efficient options. When assessing abnormal gait patterns, it is important to determine the optimal locations of FSRs and IMUs on the human body, along with their computational framework. The gait abnormalities of different types and the gait analysis systems based on IMUs and FSRs have therefore been investigated. After studying a variety of research articles, the optimal locations of the FSR and IMU sensors were determined by analysing the main pressure points under the feet and prime anatomical locations on the human body. A total of seven locations (the big toe, heel, first, third, and fifth metatarsals, as well as two close to the medial arch) can be used to measure gate cycles for normal and flat feet. It has been found that IMU sensors can be placed in four standard anatomical locations (the feet, shank, thigh, and pelvis). A section on computational analysis is included to illustrate how data from the FSR and IMU sensors are processed. Sensor data is typically sampled at 100 Hz, and wireless systems use a range of microcontrollers to capture and transmit the signals. The findings reported in this article are expected to help develop efficient and cost-effective gait analysis systems by using an optimal number of FSRs and IMUs.

Natural fibers or their derivatives have gained significant attention as green fillers or reinforcement materials due to their abundant availability, environment-friendly nature and biodegradability for sustainable development. Despite the availability of modern alternatives such as concrete, glass-fiber/resin composites, steel, and plastics, there is still considerable demand for naturally occurring based materials for different applications due to their low cost, durability, strength, heat, sound, and fire-resistance characteristics. 3D printing has provided a novel approach to the development and advancement of natural fiber-based composite materials, as well as an important platform for the advancement of biomass materials toward intelligentization and industrialization. The features of 3D printing, particularly fast prototyping and small start-up, allow the easy fabrication of materials for a wide range of applications. This review highlights the current progress and potential commercial applications of 3D printed composites reinforced with natural fibers or biomass. This study discussed that 3D printing technology can be effectively utilized for different applications, including producing electroactive papers, fuel cell membranes, adhesives, wastewater treatment, biosensors, and its potential applications in the automobile, building, and construction industries. The research in the literature showed that even if the field of 3D printing has advanced significantly, problems still need to be solved, such as material incompatibility and material cost. Further studies could be conducted to improve and adapt the methods to work with various materials. More effort should be put into developing affordable printer technologies and materials that work with these printers to broaden the applications for 3D printed objects.

With the growing energy needs, a conscious effort has been made to use non-conventional energy sources to generate clean energy efficiently. Solar energy has always been popular among humanity. Using solar energy in heating applications is one of the most prominent ways to extract solar power. Various developments have been made to augment solar water heating system (SWHS) performance. Each modified design of SWHS has its advantages and disadvantages. Broadly, solar water heaters are categorized into two types: Flat plate solar collectors (FPSCs) and evacuated tube solar collectors (ETSCs). Earlier studies show that evacuated tube SWHS are more efficient than flat plate SWHS. Extensive research is going on the design modification of evacuated tube SWHS to enhance their efficiency. Firstly, the present review article briefly introduced the numerous types of solar collectors and their range of operation. The current work reviews various techniques used for heat transfer enhancement in SWHS, their advantages, and the region of applications. The article concentrates on research involving the usage of energy storage medium, nanomaterials, reflecting surfaces, and hybrid techniques for performance augmentation of ETSCs.

The implementation of Digital Pathology has allowed the development of computational Pathology. Digital image-based applications that have received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation have been primarily focused on tissue specimens. The development of Artificial Intelligence-assisted algorithms using Cytology digital images has been much more limited due to technical challenges and a lack of optimized scanners for Cytology specimens. Despite the challenges in scanning whole slide images of cytology specimens, there have been many studies evaluating CP to create decision-support tools in Cytopathology. Among different Cytology specimens, thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) specimens have one of the greatest potentials to benefit from machine learning algorithms (MLA) derived from digital images. Several authors have evaluated different machine learning algorithms focused on thyroid cytology in the past few years. The results are promising. The algorithms have mostly shown increased accuracy in the diagnosis and classification of thyroid cytology specimens. They have brought new insights and demonstrated the potential for improving future cytopathology workflow efficiency and accuracy. However, many issues still need to be addressed to further build on and improve current MLA models and their applications. To optimally train and validate MLA for thyroid cytology specimens, larger datasets obtained from multiple institutions are needed. MLAs hold great potential in improving thyroid cancer diagnostic speed and accuracy that will lead to improvements in patient management.

Chess is a game that delicately weaves analytical thinking around artistic experience, yet recent conversions of STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics) to STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Mathematics) have omitted adding chess as an elementary coursework to K-12 and higher education curricula. Chess, as per arguments presented in this essay, can be considered as a language and a tool for furthering the development of artistic skills among scientists and analytical, pattern-recognition skills among artists. It can also serve as a missing link between science and art in STEAM curricula thanks to its finding itself halfway between the two. A handful of analogies are drawn here from chess, illustrated sporadically with positions from real-life chess games and converted to lessons in creativity for students in natural sciences. The discussion centered around these analogies is reinforced by a literature review of studies conducted over the past 80 years to assess the effect of exposing students to lessons in chess on their learning in distant domains. Overall, great benefits can emerge from complementing science education with chess and it is hoped that chess will become an integral part of basic education in primary schools and universities worldwide in the near future.

Emerging pollutants (EPs) are a group of different contaminants, such as hormones, pesticides, heavy metals, and drugs, usually found in concentrations between the order of ng and µg per liter. The global population's daily city and agro-industrial activities release EPs into the environment. Due to the chemical nature of EPs and deficient wastewater treatment and management, they are transported to superficial and groundwater through the natural water cycle, where they can potentially cause harmful effects on living organisms. Recent efforts have focused on developing technology that allows EPs quantification and monitoring in real-time and in situ. The newly developed technology aims to provide accessible groundwater management that detects and treats EPs while avoiding their contact with living beings and their toxic effects. This review presents some of the recently reported techniques that have been applied to advance the detection of EPs in groundwater and potential technologies that can be used for EP removal.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that there may be similarities in structural brain changes seen in patients with depression and psychosis compared to healthy controls. However, there is yet no systematic review collating studies comparing structural brain changes in depression and psychosis. Establishing shared and specific neuroanatomical features could aid the investigation of underlying biological processes. AIMS: To identify structural neuroimaging similarities and differences between patients with depression and psychosis. METHOD: We searched PubMed, PsychInfo, Embase, NICE Evidence, Medline and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to 30/06/2021 using relevant subject headings (controlled vocabularies) and search syntax. Papers were assessed for quality using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS: Five-hundred and twenty papers were retrieved, seven met inclusion criteria. In narrative collation of results, grey matter volume (GMV) reductions were found in the medial frontal gyrus (MFG), hippocampus and left-sided posterior subgenual prefrontal cortex in both psychosis and depression. GMV reductions affected more brain regions in psychosis, including in the insula and thalamus. White matter volume (WMV) decline was found in both depression and psychosis. Reduced fractional anisotropy (FA) was more commonly seen in depression. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest potential transdiagnostic patterns of GMV and WMV reductions in areas including the MFG, hippocampus, and left-sided posterior subgenual prefrontal cortex. These could be investigated as a future biomarker of transdiagnostic signature across mental illnesses. However, due to the limited number and poor quality of studies future research in large samples and harmonised imaging data is first needed.

Emotional artificial intelligence (AI) is a narrow, weak form of an AI system that reads, classifies, and interacts with human emotions. This form of smart technology has become an integral layer of our digital and physical infrastructures and will radically transform how we live, learn, and work. Not only will emotional AI provide numerous benefits (i.e., increased attention and awareness, optimized productivity, stress management, etc.), but in sensing and interacting with our intimate emotions, it seeks to surreptitiously modify human behaviors. This study proposes to bring together the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Moral Foundation Theory to study determinants of emotional AI's acceptance under the analytical framework of the Three-pronged Approach (Contexts, Variables, and Statistical models). We argue that to quantitatively study the acceptance of new technologies, it is necessary to leverage two intuitions. The first is the degree of acceptance increases with how users of smart technology perceive its utilities and ease of use (formalized in the TAM). The second is the degree of acceptance decreases with the user's perception of threat or affirmation posed by the technology in relation to social norms and values (formalized in the Moral Foundation Theory). This study begins by mapping the ecology of current emotional AI use in various contexts such as workplace, education, healthcare, personal assistance, etc. It then provides a brief review and critique of current applications of the TAM and the Moral Foundation Theory in studying how humans judge smart technologies. Finally, we propose the Three-pronged Analytical Framework, offering recommendations on how future studies of technological acceptance could be conducted from the questionnaire design to building statistical models.

Waste processing from fish and seafood manufacturers represents a sustainable option to prevent environmental contamination, and their byproducts offer different benefits. Transforming fish and seafood waste into valuable compounds that present nutritional and functional properties compared to mammal products becomes a new alternative in Food Industry. In this review, collagen, protein hydrolysates, and chitin from fish and seafood byproducts were selected to explain their chemical characteristics, production methodologies, and possible future perspectives. These three byproducts are gaining a significant commercial market, impacting the food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, agriculture, plastic, and biomedical industries. For this reason, the extraction methodologies, advantages, and disadvantages are discussed in this review.

OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to integrate previous research to gain a deeper understanding of which individual factors are associated with reduced accident involvement, and which factors may be linked to success during emergency situations when they do occur. Better understanding how the human will react in these situations, combined with technological enhancements is vital to risk mitigation and ensuring successful performance. This review will also identify gaps in the literature that have yet to be addressed. METHOD: A systematic literature review was undertaken, beginning with 18,319 articles from three multidisciplinary databases. After careful review and exclusion, a final sample of 22 relevant articles were retained. This analysis was spread across various high risk, sociotechnical industries, including aviation, rail, mining, nuclear power, etc. FINDINGS: The findings show that previous research has identified cognitive ability, leadership, situation awareness, personality, and risk perception as the most prominently considered factors in reducing accident involvement. Training, skill, situation awareness, and emotional stability were the most commonly associated factors to success through emergencies. CONCLUSION: While the research around individual differences impacting success during emergencies is scarce, this review provides future direction on potential factors influencing reduced accident involvement and/or potential factors that could influence a person's success through a disaster or emergency. This information could be implemented in recruitment and training of front-line workers in high-reliability organisations to reduce risk, increase safety and work towards reducing the number of accidents.

BACKGROUND: Using a theoretical perspective to guide research design and implementation can result in a coherent preventative intervention model. Among theoretical frameworks, Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) is particularly useful for studies focused on behavior change in health promotion research. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review explored and summarized the current evidence on health promotion interventions that integrated constructs of Social Cognitive Theory and the outcome of those interventions in primary care settings. METHOD: ology: We conducted this scoping review using the PRISMA scoping review guidelines; we reviewed articles from five electronic databases and additional sources that were peer-reviewed journal articles reporting interventions applying SCT constructs and synthesized the outcomes following the interventions. RESULTS: Among 849 retrieved from multiple sources, 39 articles met our eligibility criteria. Most studies (n = 19) were conducted in the United States. Twenty-six studies followed a randomized control trial design. Most studies (n = 26) recruited participants utilizing the primary care network. All 39 studies mentioned “self-efficacy” as the most utilized construct of SCT to determine how behavior change operates, followed by “observational learning” through role models. Twenty-three studies integrated individual (face-to-face) or peered group-based counseling-training programs; eight interventions used telephonic health coaching by a specialist; eight studies used audio-visual mediums. All included studies reported positive health outcomes following the intervention, including increased self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, increased Knowledge of dietary intake, high-risk behaviors such as STIs transmission, adapting to a healthy lifestyle, and adherence to post-transplant medication. CONCLUSION: Current evidence suggests that SCT-based interventions positively impact health outcomes and intervention effectiveness. The results of this study indicate the importance of incorporating and assessing several conceptual structures of behavioral theories when planning any primary care health promotion practice.

Water scarcity has been a global challenge for many countries over the past decades, and as a result, reverse osmosis (RO) has emerged as a promising and cost-effective tool for water desalination and wastewater remediation. Currently, RO accounts for >65% of the worldwide desalination capacity; however, membrane fouling is a major issue in RO processes. Fouling reduces the membrane's lifespan and permeability, while also increases the operating pressure and chemical cleaning frequency. Overall, fouling reduces the quality and quantity of desalinated water, and thus hinders the sustainable application of RO membranes by disturbing its efficacy and economic aspects. Fouling arises from various physicochemical interactions between water pollutants and membrane materials leading to foulants' accumulation onto the membrane surfaces and/or inside the membrane pores. The current review illustrates the main types of particulates, organic, inorganic and biological foulants, along with the major factors affecting its formation and development. Moreover, the currently used monitoring methods, characterization techniques and the potential mitigation strategies of membrane fouling are reviewed. Further, the still-faced challenges and the future research on RO membrane fouling are addressed.

Phthalates are well-known emerging pollutants that are toxic to the environment and human health. Phthalates are lipophilic chemicals used as plasticizers in many of the items for improving their material properties. These compounds are not chemically bound and are released to the surroundings directly. Phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are endocrine disruptors and can interfere with hormones, which can cause issues with development and reproduction, thus there is a huge concern over their existence in various ecological surroundings. The purpose of this review is to explore the occurrence, fate, and concentration of phthalates in various environmental matrices. This article also covers the phthalate degradation process, mechanism, and outcomes. Besides the conventional treatment technology, the paper also aims at the recent advancements in various physical, chemical, and biological approaches developed for phthalate degradation. In this paper, a special focus has been given on the diverse microbial entities and their bioremedial mechanisms executes the PAEs removal. Critically, the analyses method for determining intermediate products generated during phthalate biotransformation have been discussed. Concluisvely, the challenges, limitations, knowledge gaps and future opportunities of bioremediation and their significant role in ecology have also been highlighted.

S. maltophilia is a widely distributed bacterium found in natural, anthropized and clinical environments. The genome of this opportunistic pathogen of environmental origin includes a large number of genes encoding RND efflux pumps independently of the clinical or environmental origin of the strains. These pumps have been historically associated with the uptake of antibiotics and clinically relevant molecules because they confer resistance to many antibiotics. However, considering the environmental origin of S. maltophilia, the ecological role of these pumps needs to be clarified. RND efflux systems are highly conserved within bacteria and encountered both in pathogenic and non-pathogenic species. Moreover, their evolutionary origin, conservation and multiple copies in bacterial genomes suggest a primordial role in cellular functions and environmental adaptation. This review is aimed at elucidating the ecological role of S. maltophilia RND efflux pumps in the environmental context and providing an exhaustive description of the environmental niches of S. maltophilia. By looking at the substrates and functions of the pumps, we propose different involvements and roles according to the adaptation of the bacterium to various niches. We highlight that i°) regulatory mechanisms and inducer molecules help to understand the conditions leading to their expression, and ii°) association and functional redundancy of RND pumps and other efflux systems demonstrate their complex role within S. maltophilia cells. These observations emphasize that RND efflux pumps play a role in the versatility of S. maltophilia.

The research interest of the scientific community in biofilm-forming microorganisms is growing due to the problems caused by their infections affecting humans and animals, mainly because of the difficulty of the host immune system in eradicating these microbial complex communities and the increasing antimicrobial resistance rates worldwide. This review describes the virulence factors and their interaction with the microbial communities of four well-known and highly biofilm-forming pathogens, more exactly, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp., and Candida spp. The innate and adaptive immune responses caused by the infection with these microorganisms and their evasion to the host immune system by biofilm formation are discussed in the present work. The relevance of the differences in the expression of certain virulence factors and the immune response in biofilm-associated infections when compared to planktonic infections is usually described as the biofilm architecture protects the pathogen and alters the host immune responses, here we extensively discussed these mechanisms.

Schistosoma mansoni is one of the major waterborne diseases grouped underwater based Neglected Tropical Diseases in Africa. In Ethiopia, the Lake Tana Basin has favorable environment (temperature and water) for S. mansoni transmission. The prevalence of S. mansoni varies among regions based on environmental conditions and human water contact. Therefore, this review was conducted to identify hot spots districts and determine the prevailing S. mansoni prevalence in the Lake Tana Basin. Research articles published in English in the last 65 years were searched from Google scholar, PubMed, and Web of science. In addition, four-year S. mansoni data that were reported in health care facilities were extracted from health management information system in 61 districts of the Lake Tana Basin. In total, 43 research articles on S. mansoni that met the inclusion criteria and were published between 1957 and 2022. Over 98% of the articles were cross-sectional studies, while five articles addressed malacological studies. Among 61 districts, 19 (31%) were identified as hotspot districts for S. mansoni infection in the Lake Tana Basin. S. mansoni prevalence and the abundance of its host snail showed spatial and seasonal variations. On average 2000 school children/year attended health care facilities for S. mansoni infection. Swimming habits [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.2, p = 0.030], irrigation practice (AOR = 3:09, p ≤ 0.001), fishing (AOR = 2:43, p = 0.005) and being male (AOR = 1.74, p = 0.002) were risk factors for contributing to S. mansoni infection. This study showed the spatial and seasonal variations of S. mansoni prevalence and its endemicity in the hottest lowland areas of the Lake Tana Basin. The research articles on S. mansoni had poor geographical coverage. Malacological studies on water bodies, assessments on knowledge and attitude in the community towards S. mansoni transmission are areas of future studies.

Bacteriophages (phages) are nanostructured viruses with highly selective antibacterial properties that have gained attention beyond eliminating bacteria. Specifically, M13 phages are filamentous phages that have recently been studied in various aspects of nanomedicine due to their biological advantages and more compliant engineering capabilities over other phages. Having nanofiber-like morphology, M13 phages can reach varied target sites and self-assemble into multidimensional scaffolds in a relatively safe and stable way. In addition, genetic modification of the coat proteins enables specific display of peptides and antibodies on the phages, allowing for precise and individualized medicine. M13 phages have also been subjected to novel engineering approaches, including phage-based bionanomaterial engineering and phage-directed nanomaterial combinations that enhance the bionanomaterial properties of M13 phages. In view of these features, researchers have been able to utilize M13 phages for therapeutic applications such as drug delivery, biodetection, tissue regeneration, and targeted cancer therapy. In particular, M13 phages have been utilized as a novel bionanomaterial for precisely mimicking natural tissue environment in order to overcome the shortage in tissue and organ donors. Hence, in this review, we address the recent studies and advances of using M13 phages in the field of nanomedicine as therapeutic agents based upon their characteristics as novel bionanomaterial with biomolecules displayed. This paper also emphasizes the novel engineering approach that enhances M13 phage's bionanomaterial capabilities. Current limitations and future approaches are also discussed to provide insight in further progress for M13 phage-based clinical applications.

The consumption of edible insects can be anadvantageous alternative to the conventional food supply chain, which involves global water waste, land deficit, undernutrition, and starvation. Besides the nutritional aspects, insect proteins have demonstrated a wide range of functional properties such as foamability, emulsifying and gelling abilities. The protein content and amino acid profile of some insects have revealed a good nutritional value and interesting functional properties. However, it is crucial to comprehend how the protein quality is affected by insect feeding, drying, and defatting. There is a knowledge gap about the impact of industrial treatment, such as pH, ionic strength, and heat treatment, on insect proteins' functional properties. In this review, we have aimed to highlight the potential application of insect proteins as a nutritional source and their promising technological applications. The study reported the principal insect protein characterization methodologies that have been investigated in the literature aiming to correlate the physicochemical parameters to possible protein functionalities. The research on the functional properties of insect proteins is at the exploratory level. Further detailed studies are needed to clarify the structure-function relation of insect proteins and how these functionalities and insect processing can increase consumer acceptance.

In bacteria, as in other microorganisms, surface compounds interact with different pattern recognition receptors expressed by host cells, which usually triggers a variety of cellular responses that result in immunomodulation. The S-layer is a two-dimensional macromolecular crystalline structure formed by (glyco)-protein subunits that covers the surface of many species of Bacteria and almost all Archaea. In Bacteria, the presence of S-layer has been described in both pathogenic and non-pathogenic strains. As surface components, special attention deserves the role that S-layer proteins (SLPs) play in the interaction of bacterial cells with humoral and cellular components of the immune system. In this sense, some differences can be predicted between pathogenic and nonpathogenic bacteria. In the first group, the S-layer constitutes an important virulence factor, which in turn makes it a potential therapeutic target. For the other group, the growing interest to understand the mechanisms of action of commensal microbiota and probiotic strains has prompted the studies of the role of the S-layer in the interaction between the host immune cells and bacteria bearing this surface structure. Palm sap sugar is a sweetener which is made from the sap or nectar collected from different varieties/species of palm trees. It has huge scope as an alternative sweetener in Indian market. It is a natural alternative to unhealthy cane sugar and is more beneficial for farmers as well. Some of its characteristic features are low GI value and its macro (Glucose: 0.49–86.90 g/100 ml, Fructose: 0.26–1.61, Sucrose: 5.30–27.00 g/100 ml) and micro (K: 65.28–1326.0, Na: 2.85–117.5, Mg: 0.54–31.00, Ca: 0.24–79.00 mg/100 ml) nutritional content. Palm sugar also has impact on colour, aroma and taste profile of the final product. The taste, sensory profile and nutritional attributes of palm sugar vary on the basis of its species, region of growth and climatic conditions. At present, traditional processing of palm sap leads to lower yield and higher expenses. There is huge potential in the field of development in processing techniques (Traditional processing, spray drying, membrane technology, and vacuum drying) to optimize the production of palm sugar. Palm sugar and other products from different parts of palm can be used to make a variety of other value-added products like toffees, chocolates, cola, toddy wine, candy, and palm vinegar etc. The purpose of this review paper is to summarise the composition of palm sap, distinctive qualities of the extracted sap, various production procedures, nutritional and physico-chemical properties of palm sugar, and the development of functional foods using palm sugar.

The school climate plays a substantial part in student development. A positive and nurturing school climate encourages the growth of all-rounders and holistic individuals. Past literature has highlighted several domains related to the school climate, including academic performance, well-being, student engagement, attendance in school, delinquent behaviors, bullying, and school safety. However, little is known about the development of other related domains, like non-cognitive skills, in school. The purpose of the study is to review the linkages of school climate with the development of students' non-cognitive skills. The current study employs a systematic literature review that adheres to PRISMA to determine the association between school climate and students' non-cognitive skills. First, this study conducted three stages of rigorous and systematic searching: identification, screening, and eligibility. As a result of the search, this study identified 65 relevant articles from Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect as the leading databases and 10.13039/100006785Google Scholar and Dimension. ai as supporting databases. Next, the current study highlights five clusters based on the analysis of network visualization by the VOSviewer software. These clusters are: the non-cognitive skills' intrapersonal and interpersonal key characteristics, a nurturing school climate and the presence of non-cognitive skills mitigate deviant behaviour in school settings, the non-cognitive skills as a predictor of academic outcomes, the multifaceted antecedents of school climate in promoting the development of student non-cognitive skills, the role of school domains and non-cognitive attributes towards students' cognitive development. This systematic literature review contributes a novel framework and an in-depth understanding of the relationship between school climate and students' non-cognitive skills. The current research serves as a starting point for future researchers to delve deeper into this subject matter to provide educational organisations with valuable guidance when navigating for better educational outcomes. In addition, the current review will shed light on the school climate and students' non-cognitive skills to further examine what has already been learnt and the missing links, contributing to the body of knowledge on this topic.

Primary headache disorders including migraine, cluster headache, and tension-type headache are among the most common disabling diseases worldwide. The unclear pathogenesis of primary headache disorders has led to high rates of misdiagnosis and limited available treatment options. In this review, we have summarized the pathophysiological factors for a better understanding of primary headache disorders. Advances in functional neuroimaging, genetics, neurophysiology have indicated that cortical hyperexcitability, regional brain dysfunction, central sensitization and neuroplasticity changes play vital roles in the development of primary headache disorders. Moreover, we have also discussed a series of neurostimulation approaches with their stimulation mechanism, safety and efficacy for prevention and treatment of primary headache disorders. Noninvasive or implantable neurostimulation techniques show great promise for treating refractory primary headache disorders.

The emerging research interests in fabrication of protein particles as soft-particle emulsifiers show the prospective potential of using protein particles in novel poly-phase dispersing food systems. This review first provides a comprehensive summary and analysis on the dominant role of key physicochemical properties of protein particles including wettability, morphology, surface charge and protein concentration on their emulsifying abilities to construct Pickering emulsions. It was found that the constructed emulsions showed high sensitivity to changes in pH, ionic strength and temperature (thermal and freeze–thaw treatment). Moreover, oxidation remains as a challenge for protein particle based Pickering emulsions during prolonged storage, reducing their acceptance in food products. Current strategies for improving the stability of these emulsions to variable aqueous conditions and variable temperatures, and restricting oxidation event are summarized. In summary, an “ideal” protein particle-based Pickering emulsion system is proposed, encompassing aspects of interfacial property, emulsion network and texture, and antioxidant enrichment, thus promoting industrial translation into novel food and nutraceutical products.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed with the aims of screening the previous studies on breaking bad news in all medical wards. METHODS: Eligible observational studies were selected. The quality of the studies was assessed using the STROBE checklist. The findings were reported using Garrard's table. All the stages of the present study were performed in terms of the PRISMA statement. RESULTS: Totally, 40 articles were included in the study and 96 items were extracted. The results show that breaking bad news is a recipient-centered process. Respect, empathy, and support were reported. The news presenters are better to use guidelines based on evidence-based findings. It is suggested that the presenter should use simple and understandable content. Moreover, suitable time and space are important to present the news. The results show the importance of paying enough attention to the emotions of the recipient and the need to provide support after breaking bad news. CONCLUSION: The recipient must be the center of the programs. It is necessary to pay attention to the characteristics of the news presenter, the news content, and finally the support. Practice Implication: Understand the recipient, trained presenter, and use of the evidence-based results, improve the breaking bad news outcome.

Agricultural and industrial activities around the world lead to the production of large quantities of agro-industrial wastes (e.g., peels of cassava, pineapple, plantain, banana, and yam, as well as rice husks, rice bran , corn husks, corn cobs, palm kernel cake, soybean meal, wheat bran, etc.). These agro-industrial wastes are discarded indiscriminately, thereby polluting the environment and becoming hazardous to human and animal health. Solid-state fermentation (SSF), a microbial fermentation process, is a viable, efficient approach that transforms discarded agro-industrial wastes into a plethora of useful value-added bioproducts. There is growing interest in the application of SSF in valorizing agro-industrial wastes for the production of fermented, protein-rich animal feed within the livestock industry. SSF reduces anti-nutritional factors whose presence hinders the digestibility and bioavailability of nutrients in agro-industrial wastes. Thus, the application of SSF improves the nutrient contents and quality of valorized agro-industrial wastes as animal feed. Fermented animal feed production may be safer, cheaper and enhance the overall growth performance and health of animals. SSF, therefore, as a strategic approach in a circular bioeconomy, presents economic and practical advantages that guarantee efficient recycling and valorization of agro-industrial wastes that ameliorate environmental pollution. This paper reviews the status of global and local Ghanaian biotransformation and valorization of agro-industrial wastes through SSF for the production of nutrient-rich animal feed.

Digital technology has become an essential part of people's lives, and the Internet's innovation made it easier for humans to carry out activities. This systematic review aims to examine parenting with a specific internet-based intervention designed to help them gain information about child-rearing. Specifically, it analyses: 1) how the internet-based parenting intervention is studied, 2) how was the study of an internet-based parenting intervention done, and 3) what themes emerged from the systematic review. The finding suggests that most internet-based parenting interventions use transmitting information techniques visually, as the content is displayed through exciting and informative content. Four themes emerged from the thematic analysis: technology-assisted parenting programs, parenting interventions as support for mothers, professional support online, and improved parenting skills. Positive responses from parents as users show that this online parenting intervention can meet their needs and has the potential to continue to be developed. The literature is quite limited regarding assessing internet-based parenting intervention in early childhood education and developmental psychology. Because of that, further research to develop internet-based parenting interventions becomes essential to give parenting professional support.

While primary bone malignancies make up just 0.2% of all cancers, osteosarcoma (OS) is the third most common cancer in adolescents. Due to its highly complex and heterogeneous tumor microenvironment (TME), OS has proven difficult to treat. There has been little to no improvement in therapy for this disease over the last 40 years. Even the recent success of immunotherapies in other blood-borne and solid malignancies has not translated to OS. With frequent recurrence and lung metastases continuing to pose a challenge in the clinic, recent advancements in molecular profiling, such as single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), have proven useful in identifying novel biomarkers of OS tumors while providing new insight into this TME that could potentially lead to new therapeutic options. This review combines the analyses of over 150,000 cells from 18 lesions ranging from primary, recurrent, and metastatic OS lesions, revealing distinct cellular populations and gene signatures that exist between them. Here, we detail these previous findings and ultimately convey the intratumoral heterogeneity that exists within OS tumor specimens.

In real scenes, due to the problems of low light and unsuitable views, the images often exhibit a variety of degradations, such as low contrast, color distortion, and noise. These degradations affect not only visual effects but also computer vision tasks. This paper focuses on the combination of traditional algorithms and machine learning algorithms in the field of image enhancement. The traditional methods, including their principles and improvements, are introduced from three categories: gray level transformation, histogram equalization, and Retinex methods. Machine learning based algorithms are not only divided into end-to-end learning and unpaired learning, but also concluded to decomposition-based learning and fusion based learning based on the applied image processing strategies. Finally, the involved methods are comprehensively compared by multiple image quality assessment methods, including mean square error, natural image quality evaluator, structural similarity, peak signal to noise ratio, etc.

BACKGROUND: Non-syndromic orofacial clefts (NSOFC) are among the most common congenital malformations. Several studies have investigated the association between stress and NSOFC; however, they have reported different and heterogeneous results. Therefore, this systematic review was conducted to investigate the association between maternal periconceptional stress and non-syndromic orofacial clefts in infants. The research question was “Is maternal periconceptional stress an etiological factor for non-syndromic orofacial clefts in infants”? METHODS: Search strategy, inclusion/exclusion criteria, and data extraction from studies reporting periconceptional maternal exposure to stress and NSOFC were implemented without language restrictions. The risks of bias in the identified studies was assessed, and this information was used in the sensitivity analyses to explain heterogeneity. A meta-analysis of the extracted data was performed. RESULTS: Twelve eligible studies were included. Forest plot for meta-analysis of the association between maternal periconceptional exposure to stress and NSOFC among studies with adjustment for potential confounders showed a statistically significant association with an increased risk of NSOFC (odds ratio [OR]:1.17; P = 0.03), which was apparent for both cleft lip with and without palate (OR:2.07; P = 0.007) and cleft palate (OR:1.72; P = 0.003). There was a substantial heterogeneity between studies, which improved when analyzing only studies that were adjusted for potential confounders. CONCLUSION: Based on the currently available evidence, maternal exposure to periconceptional stress could be considered a risk factor for NSOFCs. Therefore, we strongly recommend research investigating the effect of stress caused by the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic on the incidence of clefts.

Materials and methods We performed a systematic literature search of Medline, EMBASE and Web of Science from database inception to July 1, 2021 for articles that discuss radiation dose-volume predictors of post-radiation primary hypothyroidism in patients with HNC. Data on the incidence, clinical risk factors and radiation dose-volume parameters were extracted. A meta-analysis was performed using the random-effects model to estimate the pooled odds ratio (OR) of thyroid volume as a predictor of the risk of post-radiation hypothyroidism, adjusted for thyroid radiation dosimetry. Results Our search identified 29 observational studies involving 4,530 patients. With median follow-up durations ranging from 1.0 to 5.3 years, the average crude incidence of post-radiation primary hypothyroidism was 41.4 % (range, 10 %–57 %). Multiple radiation dose-volume parameters were associated with post-radiation primary hypothyroidism, including the thyroid mean dose (Dmean), minimum dose, V25, V30, V35, V45, V50, V30–60, VS45 and VS60. Materials and methods A systematic review of studies on PubMed was performed. A meta-analysis was conducted by computing extracted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) into a fixed-effects model. Results Thirteen studies were included in the meta-analysis. Adjuvant LRRT significantly reduced the risk of locoregional recurrence (LRR) in patients with N+ at diagnosis and ypN0 (HR 0.59; 95% CI 0.42–0.81). However, no statistically significant difference on disease-free survival (DFS) or overall survival (OS) was found. Conclusions LRRT significantly reduced the risk of LRR in patients with ypN0 after NACT whereas no impact on DFS or OS was observed. The low level of evidence should be considered when interpreting the results in clinical practice.

Although the Covid-19 pandemic has not had a direct impact on neonates so far, it has raised concerns about resource distribution and showed that planning is required before the next crisis or pandemic. Resource allocation must consider unique Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) attributes, including physical space and equipment that may not be transferable to older populations, unique skills of NICU staff, inherent uncertainty in prognosis both antenatally and postnatally, possible biases against neonates, and the future pandemic disease’s possible impact on neonates. We identified the need for a validated Neonatal Severity of Illness Prognostic Score to guide triage decisions. Based on this score, triage decisions are the responsibility of an informed triage team not involved in direct patient care. Support for the distress experienced by parents and staff is needed. This paper presents essential considerations in developing a practical framework for resources and triage in the NICU before, during and after a pandemic.

Background To comprehensively analyze the global level and trends of prevalence, incidence and years lived with disability (YLDs) for low back pain (LBP) from 1990 to 2019 by age, sex and sociodemographic index (SDI). Methods Publicly available modelled data and methods were obtained from the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) study 2019, and used to evaluate the global burden of LBP through a systematic analysis. Results Globally, the age-standardized prevalence, incidence and YLDs rate of LBP were slightly decreased from 1990 to 2019, but the number of the prevalent cases, incident cases and YLDs had substantially increased, and LBP remains the leading cause of YLDs in 2019 worldwide. The number of prevalent cases was increased with age and peaked at the age of 45–54 years for both sexes, and the global prevalence rate was higher in females than in males and increased with age, peaking at the 80–84 age group in both sexes in 2019. Overall, a positive association between the age-standardized YLD rate and SDI was observed over the past thirty years. At the national revel, the United States, Denmark and Switzerland had the three highest levels of age-standardized prevalence, while Zambia, Zimbabwe and Canada showed the highest increase in the age-standardized prevalence during 1990–2019. Conclusions LBP is a major public health issue globally, and its burden remains high. Increasing population awareness about its risk factors and preventive measures for LBP are needed to reduce the future burden of this condition. The human body is a dynamic ecosystem consisting of millions of microbes which are often comprised under the term microbiome. Compared to bacteria, which count for the overwhelming majority of the microbiome, the number of human-associated fungi is small and often underestimated. Nonetheless, they can be found in different host niches such as the gut, the oral cavity and the skin. The fungal community has several potential roles in health and disease of the human host. In this review we will focus on intestinal fungi and their interaction with the host as well as bacteria. We also summarize technical challenges and possible biases researchers must be aware of when conducting mycobiome analysis.

Infections caused by virus are one of the foremost causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. Although a number of antiviral drugs are currently used for treatment of various kinds of viral infection diseases, there is still no available therapeutic agent for the most of virus in clinical practice. Coumarin is a chemical compound which is found naturally in a variety of plants, as well as it can be synthetically produced possessing diverse biological effects. More recently, reports have highlighted the potential role of coumarin derivatives as antiviral agents. This review outlines the advances in coumarin-based compounds against various viruses including human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis virus, herpes simplex virus, Chikungunya virus and Enterovirus 71, the structure activity relationship and the possible mechanism of action of the most potent coumarin derivatives are also discussed.

Sex differences in the nervous system have gained recent academic interest. While the prominent differences are observed in mood and anxiety disorders, growing number of evidences also suggest sex difference in pain perception. This review focuses on estrogen as the key molecule underlying such difference, because estrogen plays many functions in the nervous system, including modulation of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) and P2X purinoceptor 3 (P2X3), two important nociceptive receptors. Estrogen was shown in various studies to up-regulate TRPV1 expression through two distinct pathways, resulting in pro-nociceptive effect. However, estrogen alleviated pain in other studies, by down-regulating nerve growth factor (NGF)–activated pathways and TRPV1. Estrogen may also attenuate nociception by inhibiting P2X3 receptors and ATP-signaling. Understanding the mechanism underlying the pro- and anti-nociceptive effect of estrogen might be crucial to understand pathophysiology of the burning mouth syndrome (BMS), a common chronic orofacial pain disorder in menopausal women. The involvement of TRPV1 is strongly suspected because of burning sensation. Reduced estrogen level of the BMS patient might have caused increased activity of P2X3 receptors. Interestingly, the increased expression of TRPV1 and P2X3 in oral mucosa of BMS patients was reported. The combinational impact of differential modulation of TRPV1/P2X3 during menopause might be an important contributing factor of etiology of BMS. Understanding the estrogen-dependent regulation of nociceptive receptors may provide a valuable insight toward the peripheral mechanism of sex-difference in pain perception.
