Metal nanoparticles have drawn great interest due to their unique properties for applications in the fields of catalysis, biomedicine and environmental science depending on the architecture of the metal nanoparticle composites. Amongst different designing routes, the chemical template deposition offers great flexibility in terms of the template selection and interfacial interactions, giving rise to controllable designs. In order to control over nanoparticle size distribution and deposition efficiency, a sonochemical approach has been systematically followed in this study. Key parameters of the ultrasound-assisted deposition procedures during the seeding step to synthesise gold nanoparticle-coated poly(styrene) beads were investigated. The impact of the solution pH and the ultrasonic frequency on the template deposition was examined at 139, 300, 500 and 1000 kHz. The results, monitored by transmission electron spectroscopic imaging, show that the highest gold deposition was achieved at 300 kHz, revealing the mechanistic details of the nucleation-crystal growth behaviour as a function of ultrasonic frequency and reaction time. In addition, the concentration ratio between gold ions and poly(styrene) beads was varied. The highest deposition coverage and smallest particle size were reached at 0.05 mM and 2.5 mg, respectively. The proposed mechanism of the MNPs formation and deposition behaviour were then discussed based on the tested parameters.

Background: Both overweight and cognitive deficits are common among people with schizophrenia (SZ) and schizoaffective disorder. The results in earlier studies have been inconsistent on whether overweight is associated with cognitive deficits in psychotic disorders. Aims: Our aim in this study was to detect possible associations between obesity and cognitive deficits among study participants with SZ and schizoaffective disorder. Methods: The study sample included 5382 participants with a clinical diagnosis of SZ or schizoaffective disorder selected from the Finnish SUPER study. Obesity was measured both with body-mass index and waist circumference. The cognitive performance was evaluated with two tests from the Cambridge automated neuropsychological test battery: Reaction time was evaluated with the 5-choice serial reaction time task. Visual memory was evaluated with the paired associative learning test. The final analysis included a total sample of 4498 participants applicable for the analysis of the reaction time and 3967 participants for the analysis of the visual memory. Results: Obesity measured with body-mass index was associated with better performance in reaction time task among both female and male participants. Among male participants, overweight was associated with better performance in the visual memory test. The waist circumference was not associated with cognitive measures. Conclusions: The results suggest that obesity in people with SZ or schizoaffective disorder might not be associated with cognitive deficits but instead with better cognitive performance. The results were opposite from earlier literature on the general population. More research is required to better understand whether the results might be partly caused by the differences in the etiology of obesity between the general population and people with SZ.

Objective: Previous research has explored the pheromone release patterns of female moths, revealing species-specific release frequencies and the transmission of temporal information through odourant plumes in turbulent flows. Varying the release frequency during the orientation process results in distinct orientation behaviours. Studies on moth movement patterns have determined that encounters and deviations from odour plumes elicit distinct reactions; the time interval between each movement pattern is measured as the “reaction time,” and the interval between each detection and loss of odourant plume is measured as the “gap length.” Methods: We simulated turbulent flow at various release frequencies. Our efforts focused on establishing a model that could simulate the joint orientation movement under turbulent flow and intermittent plumes. We built an agent moving mechanism, including wind velocity information, with particular reference to the temporal parameter and orientation success efficiency. Results: We calculated the time threshold of each burst in different simulations under different wind velocities and release frequencies. The time structure characteristics of the plume along the turbulent flow vary depending on the distance from the source. We simulated walking agents in a turbulent environment and recorded their behaviour processes. The reaction time, release interval, and time threshold were related to the orientation results. Conclusion: On the basis of previous experimental results and our simulations, we conclude that the designated interval time likely enhances search efficiency. The complex and dynamic natural environment presents various opportunities for using this unique odour-source searching capability in different scenarios, potentially improving the control systems of odour-searching robots.

Introduction: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is characterized by cyclical physical and mood disturbances during the luteal phase. Symptoms gradually intensify during this phase and typically subside a few days after menstruation begins. PMS encompasses neuromuscular and psychological symptoms that can significantly affect the quality of life of affected females. This study aims to compare proprioception, reaction time, and coordination between females with PMS and those with non-PMS. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study, conducted in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines, recruited 998 females with PMS and without PMS, aged 18–40 years based on premenstrual dysphoric disorder criteria. Participants underwent assessments of proprioception and reaction time using the Sensbalance Miniboard. Coordination was assessed using Lower Extremity Motor Coordination Test. Data analysis utilized the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to determine the normality of the data while Mann Whitney-U test was used to compare the between group differences of the variables. Background: The circulation of vehicles, motorized or not, is a risky activity that can lead to a traffic accident in which all road users can be affected. Road accidents generate high personal, labor, health and economic costs, as well as civil, administrative and even criminal responsibilities. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a correct investigation of these road accidents. This paper reviews one of the models used for this investigation, the sequential events model for road crashes called MOSES. This model simplifies into a single sequential analysis the actions and conditions that have generated the occurrence and correlation of events that have led to a collision between two bodies, at least one of which is a vehicle, with harmful consequences for the environment, people and things. Methods: Analyzing the road accidents that occurred in the city of Badajoz between 2018 and 2022, this work proposes a new position of the sequential events in road accidents. This new position is present in more than fifty percent of the analyzed road accidents. How this new position can improve the description of traffic accidents is tested by analyzing an actual traffic accident recorded in the city of Badajoz between a motorcycle and a car. Results: The new position has been called Trust Position (TP) and is located between the Real Perception Position (RPP) and the Decision Enforcement Position (DEP) in the sequential events model for road crashes (i-MOSES). Furthermore, in this improvement of the MOSES model (i-MOSES), the reaction time (RT) is analyzed in more depth with the PIEV (Perception, Intellection, Emotion and Volition) theory, establishing that between RPP and TP are present the phases of perception and intellection, and between TP and DEP are present the phases of emotion and volition. Conclusions: This analysis shows how the proposed i-MOSES model allows for a deeper and more effective analysis of the causes that generated the traffic accident and all its circumstances. Moreover, it provides conclusions closer to the reality of how the accident actually happened and why it could have happened, ultimately leading to preventive measures to avoid future accidents.

Chitosan nanofiber membranes manufactured via electrospinning are attractive for drug delivery applications due to their increased surface area. The as-spun fibers contain trifluoroacetate (TFA)-salts that cause swelling and loss of nanofiber structure in physiological solutions and are cytotoxic. Here, a post-electrospinning treatment has been reported using fatty acyl chlorides and pyridine to O-acylate the membranes with different acyl chain-length (C6, C8, C10, and C12). The O-acylation reactions were carried out with acyl chlorides in a basic environment for 2 hr, 3 hr, 4 hr and, 5 hr. The effects of the acyl chain length and the reaction time were assessed using various physio-chemical characterization techniques including FTIR, NMR, Contact Angle, XPS, and SEM. The acylated nanofibers displayed hydrophobic properties and allowed the removal of the cytotoxic TFA salts without compromising the nanofibrous structure. The fiber diameter increased with the increasing length of the substituted acyl chain. The degree of substitution of the acyl chains did not change significantly when reacted for a longer period indicating the completion of the reaction within 2 hr. This could allow the faster modification of the membranes for potential application in the delivery of hydrophobic drugs.

The macroscopic evaluation of road traffic characteristics is vital as they will alter significantly with the emergence of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs). The macroscopic second-order traffic flow models are emerging as essential tools to observe the evolutionary dynamics of traffic flow. These models are significantly improved to describe the dynamics of traffic flow in view of Human-Driven Vehicles (HDVs). However, proficient macroscopic second-order traffic flow models are indispensable in comprehending and elucidating the descriptions of traffic flow dynamics, particularly in the view of evolving CAVs. Therefore, we propose a macroscopic second-order traffic model that distinguishes CAVs from HDVs by meticulously considering their distinct driving characteristics. The proposed model incorporates lengthways between the vehicles, and the reaction time of the CAVs, and is evaluated on a 20,000 m ring road. The findings show that with smaller lengthways and reaction times of CAVs, traffic evolves quickly during transitions. An increase in average traffic velocity is observed as the reaction time is significantly small. It has been demonstrated that CAVs can significantly limit variations in velocity resulting in smoother flow operations.

Objective: To develop and evaluate instruments for measuring implicit associations of nursing home care providers with behaviours aimed at improving resident mood. Method: Study 1 (N = 41) followed an iterative approach to develop two implicit association tasks measuring implicit attitude (positive versus negative valence) and motivation (wanting versus not wanting) regarding mood-improving behaviours, followed by an evaluation of the content validity for target stimuli representing these behaviours. In Study 2 (N = 230), the tasks were assessed for stimulus classification ease (accuracy and speed) and internal consistency. A subsample (n = 111) completed additional questionnaires to evaluate convergent validity (with self-reported attitudes towards depression, altruism, and mood-improving behaviours), and discriminant validity (against social desirability), and repeated the tasks after 2 weeks to assess test-retest reliability. Results: Content validity indexes for target stimuli were satisfactory. Error rates were acceptable for attribute stimuli, but exceeded the 10 % limit for target stimuli. Response times for all stimuli exceeded the 800-millisecond threshold. Both tasks demonstrated good internal consistency but poor test-retest reliability. Regarding convergent validity, both tasks significantly correlated with altruism, the implicit attitude task associated with self-reported mood-improving behaviours, and the implicit motivation task correlated with the behavioural scale of attitudes towards depression. Discriminant validity was supported as neither task was significantly associated with social desirability. Conclusions: The implicit association tasks show potential for measuring implicit associations with mood-improving behaviours of care providers, offering an innovative pathway for exploring processes influencing caregiving behaviours. However, limitations in psychometric properties were identified, aligning with challenges observed in similar measures.

Responses to potentially dangerous stimuli are among the most basic animal behaviors. While research has shown that threats automatically capture the attention of human participants, research has failed to demonstrate automatic behavioral responses to threats in humans. Using a novel naturalistic paradigm, we show that two species of animals humans often report fearing trigger rapid withdrawal responses: participants withdrew their arm from photos of snakes and spiders faster, and with higher acceleration when compared to bird and butterfly stimuli. The behavior was specific to withdrawal as approach movements or button-press/release tasks failed to detect a similar difference. Moreover, between-participant differences in how aversive they found the stimuli predicted the participant's withdrawal speed, indicating that the paradigm was also sensitive to trait-level differences between individuals. Using electroencephalography (EEG), we show that the fast withdrawal was mediated by two attentional processes. First, fast withdrawal responses were associated with early amplification of sensory signals (40–110 ms after stimulus). Second, a later correlate of feature-based attention (early posterior negativity, EPN, 200–240 ms after stimulus) revealed the opposite pattern: Stronger EPN was associated with slower behavioral responses, suggesting that the deployment of attention towards the threatening stimulus features, or failure to “disengage” attention from the stimulus, was detrimental for withdrawal speed. Altogether, the results suggest that rapid behavioral withdrawal from a threatening animal is mediated by reflex-like attentional processing, and later, conscious attention to stimulus features may hinder escaping the treat.

The investigation of the low-cost deoxygenation of guaiacol (GUA, a model bio-oil compound) is of importance for upgrading bio-oil. At present, common sulfide catalysts for GUA deoxygenation reactions cause contamination of the liquid product, and noble metal catalysts are economically disadvantageous. In this study, four reduced Fe-based oxides with different Ce doping ratios were prepared and their effects on the in-situ deoxygenation performance of GUA in aqueous/methanol hydrogen donor solvents were explored. The results based on the deoxygenation degree, conversion degree, and higher heating value (HHV) of the products showed that the oxide catalyst with a Fe/Ce molar ratio of 2:1 in the methanol solvent performed very well. After selecting an excellent catalyst and a better hydrogen donor solvent, four factors (reaction temperature, reaction time, volume ratio of GUA dosage and methanol dosage, and the ratio of catalyst dosage at the bottom of the reactor to that at the top) in the deoxygenation degree of GUA were investigated using an orthogonal experimental method to further explore the performance of the catalyst. The results showed that the reaction temperature and time greatly influenced GUA deoxygenation. Under optimal experimental conditions, the deoxygenation degree and conversion degree of GUA could reach 34.36% and 92.56%, respectively, based on the relative peak area of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and the HHV of the liquid product was 32.27 MJ/kg. Although Fe/Ce catalysts mainly promote demethoxylation, demethylation, and methylation, the stability and quality of the liquid products were improved compared with GUA owing to the reduction in phenolic hydroxyl and ether content. The reduced catalyst in the process of GUA in-situ deoxygenation reactions in methanol maintained a steady performance, as revealed by X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence.

This paper studied the synthesis of polyurethane modified epoxy via simultaneous reaction by varying the reaction time to 30, 60, and 90 min. The polypropylene glycol and tolonate as polyurethane components were reacted simultaneously with epoxy in the presence of catalyst dibutyltin dilaurate without prepolymer polyurethane first. The effect of various reaction times on polyurethane modified epoxy (PME) properties was studied by analyzing molecular weight distribution, viscosity, epoxy equivalent weight, pot life, dry-to-touch time, elongation at break, tensile strength, and compared to the unmodified epoxy. The various reaction time processes of polyurethane-modified epoxy tend to increase the molecular weight and influence the molecular weight distribution of PME. It indicated that the reactivity polymerization of epoxy resin with polyurethane component increased with reaction time. Furthermore, these properties affect other properties, i.e., viscosity, epoxy equivalent weight, pot life, and tensile strength increase.

Lukács et al. (2017) enhanced the Reaction Time Concealed Information Test (RT CIT) by incorporating "filler" items. Fillers are intended to increase attention and cognitive load, which should potentially enhance the P300 based CIT (P300-CIT) too. Despite these hypotheses, Olson et al. (2020) found no clear effects of fillers on P300 amplitude and suggested that excessive cognitive load may counteract an increase in attention. Wojciechowski and Lukács (2022) introduced "importance-related" fillers to the RT-CIT in an imaginary mock crime scenario, theorizing they would be more intuitive and easier for participants to follow. This study aims to replicate their findings in a classic episodic mock crime scenario, and with semantic information, to test if a fillers-related enhancement effect on P300 may be observed when cognitive load is reduced. The study compares three protocols: the importance-themed enhanced CIT (E-CIT), a less cognitively demanding version of the E-CIT, the inducer CIT (I-CIT), and the classic three-stimulus protocol (3SP-CIT). The study investigates whether the I-CIT yields a superior P300-CIT effect due to reduced cognitive load and induced semantic context of importance. Reaction time analyses replicated the RT-CIT effect enhancement in the E-CIT compared to the classic 3SP-CIT. Elevated response times in the E-CIT compared to the 3SP-CIT and I-CIT suggest higher cognitive load in the E-CIT. Response times were comparable between the 3SP-CIT and I-CIT, suggesting similar cognitive load. For the P300-CIT results, similar to Olson et al. (2020), fillers did not affect P300 amplitude or latency in the E-CIT group, with Bayes factors supporting the null. Background/purpose: Increased intra-individual variability (IIV) in reaction time (RT) is a key feature of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, little is known about neurobiology underpinnings of IIV in ADHD. Methods: We assessed 55 youths with ADHD, and 55 individually-matched typically developing control (TDC) with the MRI and Conners' Continuous Performance Test. The ex-Gaussian distribution of RT was estimated to capture IIV with the parameters σ (sigma) and τ (tau). The regional brain volumes, analyzed by voxel-based morphometry, were correlated with IIV parameters. Results: We found both distinct and shared correlations among ADHD and TDC. For grey matter, there were significant σ-by-group interactions in the cingulate cortex and thalamus and also a τ-by-group interaction in the right inferior frontal gyrus. There was also shared negative associations between σ and regional volumes of the right posterior cerebellum and a positive association between τ and the right anterior insula. For white matter, there was a significant σ-by-group interaction in the genu of the corpus callosum and significant τ-by-group interactions in the right anterior corona radiata, the left splenium of the corpus callosum, and bilateral posterior cerebellum. There were also shared patterns that increased τ was associated with increased regional volumes of the right anterior corona radiata and decreased regional volumes of the right posterior limb of the internal capsule. Conclusion: This study highlights that brain regions responsible for the motor, salience processing and multimodal information integration are associated with increased IIV in youths with ADHD.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the accuracy of a 4 split time modelling method to generate velocity-time and velocity-distance variables in elite male 100-m sprinters and subsequently to assess the roles of key sprint parameters with respect to 100-m sprint performance. Additionally, this study aimed to assess the differences between faster and slower sprinters in key sprint variables that have not been assessed in previous work. Methods: Velocity-time and velocity-distance curves were generated using a mono-exponential function from 4 split times for 82 male sprinters during major athletics competitions. Key race variables—maximum velocity, the acceleration time constant (τ), and percentage of velocity lost (vLoss)—were derived for each athlete. Athletes were divided into tertiles, based on 100-m time, with the first and third tertiles considered to be the faster and slower groups, respectively, to facilitate further analysis. Results: Modelled split times and velocities displayed excellent accuracy and close agreement with raw measures (range of mean bias was –0.2% to 0.2%, and range of intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) was 0.935 to 0.999) except for 10-m time (mean bias was 1.6% ± 1.3%, and the ICC was 0.600). The 100-m sprint performance time and all 20-m split times had a significant near-perfect negative correlation with maximum velocity (r ≥ –0.90) except for the 0 to 20-m split time, where a significantly large negative correlation was found (r = –0.57). The faster group had a significantly higher maximum velocity and τ (p < 0.001), and no significant difference was found for vLoss (p = 0.085). Conclusion: Coaches and researchers are encouraged to utilize the 4 split time method proposed in the current study to assess several key race variables that describe a sprinter's performance capacities, which can be subsequently used to further inform training.

Humans show an impressive ability to plan over complex situations and environments. A classic approach to explaining such planning has been tree-search algorithms which search through alternative state sequences for the most efficient path through states. However, this approach fails when the number of states is large due to the time to compute all possible sequences. Hierarchical route planning has been proposed as an alternative, offering a computationally efficient mechanism in which the representation of the environment is segregated into clusters. Current evidence for hierarchical planning comes from experimentally created environments which have clearly defined boundaries and far fewer states than the real-world. To test for real-world hierarchical planning we exploited the capacity of London licensed taxi drivers to use their memory to construct a street by street plan across London, UK (>26,000 streets). The time to recall each successive street name was treated as the response time, with a rapid average of 1.8 s between each street. In support of hierarchical planning we find that the clustered structure of London's regions impacts the response times, with minimal impact of the distance across the street network (as would be predicted by tree-search). We also find that changing direction during the plan (e.g. turning left or right) is associated with delayed response times. The provided dataset represents the performance of adult individuals in three experimental tasks measuring cognitive inhibition: the Stroop task; the SART task and the Eriksen Flanker task. All tasks were initially completed in a web setting (online) by 485 individuals. Additionally, randomly selected participants completed all these tasks one more time (220 participants) or two more times (100 participants) during separate laboratory session(s) offline. The provided dataset contains data both from the offline and online experimental sessions. For the Stroop and Flanker tasks, we have provided data on mean reaction times for correct answers and the percent of correct answers for both congruent and incongruent trials. For the SART task, we have provided data on the number and the percent of commission and omission errors; the mean correct reaction times in “go” trials; the standard deviations of correct reaction times in “go” trials; the coefficients of variability for correct reaction times in “go” trials; the mean reaction times for successful “go” trials proceeding successful “no-go” trials; and the mean reaction times for correct “go” trials proceeding failed “no-go” trials. Data from both laboratory sessions contains information on the age and gender of participants. Additionally, we have provided the dates and hours of all experimental sessions. This dataset can potentially be reused for exploratory research on cognitive inhibition, i.e., the stability of individual cognitive inhibition capacity over time; intercorrelations of various inhibition task performance measures; individual differences in cognitive inhibition; or the influence of task setting (web vs laboratory) on inhibition performance measured in different settings (web vs laboratory).

Problem considered: Road accidents are a growing concern in developing countries that needs immediate attention. The present study evaluated the role of Maha Mrityunjaya mantra (MMM), a vedic practice in reducing reaction time, burnout and improving sleep among commercial drivers. Methods: Fifty commercial drivers (Age 39.92 ± 8.64) were enrolled for a 2 months MMM chanting session (21 rounds, 15 min daily, 5 sessions/week). The effects were measured at the baseline and at the end of 2 months using ruler drop test (RDT), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Oldenburg burnout inventory (OLBI). Results: The average work experience and duration of working hours per day were 15.1 ± 7.75 years and for 8.7 ± 1.7 h respectively. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 16-week creative expression intervention program (CrExp) on the event-related potential (ERP) and task reaction time in older individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods: This study is a randomized controlled clinical trial conducted in the Memory Center of Fujian Provincial hospital. Thirty-six MCI patients were randomly distributed into two groups. One group underwent a 16-week creative expression program (CrExp, n = 18) and the other performed as a control group (CG, n = 18) by general social activities. The amplitude and latency of ERP-P300 from the central (Cz), parietal (Pz), frontal (Fz) cortices and task reaction time (RT) were assessed at baseline, post-interventi on, and 24-week follow-up. Results: The CrExp group showed greater differences than CG of P300 latency in Cz (F = 4.37, P = 0.015), Pz (F = 2.78, P = 0.009), Fz (F = 6.45, P = 0.031) brain area after 16 weeks of intervention and in Fz (F = 3.23, P = 0.028), Cz (F = 3.79, P = 0.024), and Pz (F = 5.60, P = 0.036) at 24 weeks follow-up. Also, we analyzed the task reaction time between two groups and found that a shorten reaction time at post-intervention (F = 4.47, P = 0.011) and 24 weeks follow-up (F = 3.12, P = 0.007) in the CrExp group. However, there was no difference in P300 amplitude in either brain area between the two groups. Conclusion: The electrophysiological results of the creative expression cognitive therapy group were more obvious than those of the general cognitive therapy group, and the latency and task reaction time may be considered as supported parameters in diagnosing the effects during non-drug therapy intervention in clinical practice.

Prior knowledge of color, such as traffic rules (blue/green and red mean “go” and “stop” respectively), can influence reaction times (RTs). Specifically, in a Go/No-go task, where signals were presented by a light-emitting diode (LED) lighting device, RT has been reported to be longer when responding to a red signal and withholding the response to a blue signal (Red Go/Blue No-go task) than when responding to a blue signal and withholding the response to a red signal (Blue Go/Red No-go task). In recent years, a driving simulator has been shown to be effective in evaluation and training of driving skills of dementia and stroke patients. However, it is unknown whether the change in RT observed with the LED lighting device can be replicated with a monitor presenting signals that are different from the real traffic lights in terms of depth and texture. The purpose of this study was to elucidate whether a difference in visual modality (LED and monitor) influences the effect of prior knowledge of color on RTs.Fifteen participants performed a simple reaction task (Blue and Red signals), a Blue Go/Red No-go task, and a Red Go/Blue No-go task. Signals were presented from an LED lighting device (Light condition) and a liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor (Monitor condition).The results showed that there was no significant difference in simple RT by signal color in both conditions. In the Go/No-go task, there was a significant interaction between the type of signal presentation device and the color of signal. Although the RT was significantly longer in the Red Go/Blue No-go than Blue Go/Red No-go task in the Light condition, there was no significant difference in RT between the Blue Go/Red No-go and Red Go/Blue No-go tasks in the Monitor condition.It is interpreted that blue and red signals presented from the LCD monitor were insufficient to evoke a perception of traffic lights as compared to the LED. This study suggests that a difference in the presentation modality (LED and monitor) of visual information can influence the level of object perception and consequently the effect of prior knowledge on behavioral responses.

Frustration tolerance is a skill related to emotional regulation processes and is important insofar as it affects people's social relationships and even health. Low levels of frustration tolerance in children have been associated with a greater number of externalizing symptoms such as aggression or anger. Despite its importance, there are a limited number of tasks that attempt to evaluate this construct objectively. Therefore, the aim of our work was the design of a computerized task, programmed as a videogame in order to assess frustration tolerance in children from 6 to 10 years old. The results obtained showed that the test had a good internal consistency and could be useful as an objective measure of frustration tolerance in children. In line with the literature, our data have shown no influence of gender or laterality of participants during the task and only 7% of the frustration measure could be explained by the influence of participants' age. On the other hand, the performance of the participants during the task has allowed us to classify them into six groups according to their performance, namely Low/High Frustration, Low/High Performance and Low/High Reaction Time. This test would permit to compare participants' performance with their reference group but also with their own results, facilitating the obtention of an objective assessment of frustration tolerance in young children.

Purpose: The Public Opinion Survey of Human Attributes - Stuttering (POSHA-S, St. Louis, 2013) was developed as a standard measure of public attitudes about people who stutter. As with any survey-based methods, threats to validity may occur because of social desirability bias. Using computer mouse-tracking, we were interested in observing changes in cognition that are manifested in intentionality through action by evaluating underlying cognitive processes that drive social judgments of people who stutter., Methods: Twenty-two women, 1 non-binary person, and 47 men reported using a computer mouse to complete an online, remote, and modified version of the POSHA-S. Responses were categorized as correct/helpful or incorrect/unhelpful relative to each component of the POSHA-S and were used as measures of explicit cognitive processes. Computer-mouse trajectory metrics, including area under the curve (AUC) and reaction time (RT), were used to measure implicit cognitive processes., Results: Although participants' explicit responses were significantly more likely to be correct/helpful than incorrect/unhelpful, with endorsement of correct/helpful prompts 77 % of the time, participants also endorsed incorrect/unhelpful prompts more than half (i.e., 52 %) of the time. Familiarity with people who stutter was associated with disagreeing with incorrect/unhelpful prompts. As indicated by greater AUC, participants exhibited significantly more implicit cognitive processes indicating competition when responding "disagree" compared to "agree", regardless of whether the prompts were correct/helpful or incorrect/unhelpful. Similarly, participants took significantly longer to respond to prompts with "disagree" rather than "agree"., Conclusion: The findings of this study offer evidence of participants reporting cognitive processes that are overall more correct/helpful than incorrect/unhelpful, in their explicit responses to the dichotomous response tasks of the POSHA-S. Reported perception of a new stimulus is either attracted toward or repelled away from task-irrelevant prior stimuli. While prevailing theories propose that the opposing serial biases may stem from distinct stages of information processing, the exact role of working memory (WM) in the serial bias remains unclear despite its consistent involvement in nearly all pertinent studies. Additionally, it is not well understood whether this bias is primarily driven by the biased representation itself or by the decision-making process for the new stimulus. In the present study, we used an orientation delayed estimation paradigm with an attention-demanding intervening task, designed to disrupt the maintenance of stimulus information to investigate the role of WM in serial bias. In the analysis, we scrutinized the trajectory of mouse reports and response time to investigate how the response unfolds over time. Our findings indicate that the serial bias went from repulsive to attractive when WM maintenance was interrupted by the intervening task, and that the associated response trajectories and response time exhibited patterns that cannot be explained by the biased representation alone. These results demonstrate that the task-irrelevant prior stimulus influences the decision for the new stimulus, with the direction of the bias being determined by attentional demand during WM maintenance, thereby placing significant constraints on existing theories on the serial bias effect., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier B.V. Decision processes within choice reaction-time (CRT) tasks are often modelled using evidence accumulation models (EAMs), a variation of which is the Diffusion Decision Model (DDM, for a review, see Ratcliff et al., 2016). Ulrich et al. (2015) introduced a Diffusion Model for Conflict tasks (DMC). The DMC model combines common features from within standard diffusion models with the addition of superimposed controlled and automatic activation. The DMC model can explain data behavioural patterns within common conflict-like tasks, where stimulus features include both a relevant and irrelevant source of information (e.g., Simon task). This paper introduces the R-package DMCfun, which implements the DMC model and provides functionality to fit the model to observed data. Furthermore, the package can be used to perform and illustrate distributional analyses on data from any conflict-like CRT task.

In a context of evolving concern over housing conditions of farmed rabbits, we developed a housing system that allows access to an outdoor area. The aim was to study the health status, growth and behaviour of rabbits raised at two stocking densities with access to a paddock, or not. We distributed 299 weaned rabbits in four groups (YH: 100, NH: 99, YL: 50 and NL: 50) using a 2 × 2 factorial design including access (Y: yes) or not (N: not) to a 23 m2 paddock and the indoor stocking density (H, high: 17 or L, low: 9 rabbits/m2). We measured the growth and health status of each animal weekly for 42 days (from 31 to 73 days of age) and performed reactivity tests to a new environment, a human and new object. We also assessed the rabbits’ behaviour at days 26 and 40 by doing a visual scan of each animal at regular time intervals. Our results showed that stocking density had no effect on mortality, but mortality tended to increase with outdoor access from 3.0% to 7.0% (P

Variations in reaction time are a ubiquitous characteristic of human behavior. Extensively documented, they have been successfully modeled using parameters of the subject or the task, but the neural basis of behavioral reaction time that varies within the same subject and the same task has been minimally studied. In this paper, we investigate behavioral reaction time variance using 28 datasets of direct cortical recordings in humans who engaged in four different types of simple sensory-motor reaction time tasks. Using a previously described technique that can identify the onset of population-level cortical activity and a novel functional connectivity algorithm described herein, we show that the cumulative latency difference of population-level neural activity across the task-related cortical network can explain up to 41% of the trial-by-trial variance in reaction time. Furthermore, we show that reaction time variance may primarily be due to the latencies in specific brain regions and demonstrate that behavioral latency variance is accumulated across the whole task-related cortical network. Our results suggest that population-level neural activity monotonically increases prior to movement execution, and that trial-by-trial changes in that increase are, in part, accounted for by inhibitory activity indexed by low-frequency oscillations. This pre-movement neural activity explains 19% of the measured variance in neural latencies in our data. Thus, our study provides a mechanistic explanation for a sizable fraction of behavioral reaction time when the subject’s task is the same from trial to trial.

In order to gauge the executive processes underlying adaptive behavior, a central criterion in psychology is the extent to which experimental findings generalize across response types. The latency of two major acts of control, action initiation and inhibition, was evaluated using a stop–signal paradigm with two response types, involving either a finger key–pressing or a wrist pen–swiping response. In both conditions, 40 participants were instructed to respond quickly to a GO stimulus but to cancel their responses when a STOP signal was presented, which occurred randomly in 25% of the trials. Taken together, analyses of reaction times and of inhibition probability functions indicated that action initiation generalized across the two response types. In contrast, the finger key–pressing and the wrist pen–swiping responses involved independent inhibition processes. These results challenge a strictly top–down view for some acts of control by showing an interaction between the executive and motor levels in terms of response modality specificity.

Context: Vehicle driving depends on the integration of motor, visual, and cognitive skills to respond appropriately to different situations that occur in traffic., Objectives: To analyze a model of performance predictor for braking time in the driving simulator, using a battery of tests divided by gender., Methods: Selected were 100 male drivers with a mean age of 72.6 ± 5.7 years. Sociodemographic variables, braking time in the driving simulator, and motor, visual, and cognitive skills were evaluated., Results: Comparing genders, men were older than women (p = 0.002) and had longer driving times (p = 0.001). Men had more strength in hand grip (p ≤ 0.001). In the linear regression analysis, the model explained 68 % of the braking time in men and 50.8 % in women. In the stepwise multiple linear regression analysis, the variable that remained in the model was the strength of the right plantar flexors, which explained 13 % of the braking time in women and men, and the cognitive variables explained 38.9 %., Conclusion: Sociodemographic, motor, visual, and cognitive variables, explained a substantial portion of the variability in braking time for both older women and men, the specific variables driving this performance differed between the sexes. For older women, factors such as muscle strength emerged as critical determinants of braking ability, highlighting the importance of physical health in maintaining driving skills. Background and Objectives: Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have reported higher anger and aggression than healthy individuals in previous studies using explicit measures. However, studies using implicit measures have demonstrated mixed results. The aim of the present study was to investigate implicit aggressiveness in OCD using an approach-avoidance task (AAT)., Methods: Seventy-eight patients with OCD and 37 healthy controls underwent structured clinical interviews and measures of anger, OCD, and depressive symptoms as well as a computerized AAT that included aggressive, peaceful, negative, and positive stimuli., Results: In line with previous studies, patients with OCD reported higher scores on explicit anger. With respect to the implicit measure, repeated measures ANOVAs did not show any differences in mean reaction times for pushing compared to pulling aggressive versus peaceful and negative versus positive words. However, analyses of specific OCD symptom dimensions demonstrated significantly faster reaction times for pulling compared to pushing aggressive words for patients with high scores in the OCD symptom dimensions obsessing and hoarding., Limitations: Eighty percent of patients with OCD showed psychiatric comorbidities and all were seeking treatment., Conclusion: The present study supports previous studies reporting the absence of higher aggressiveness in patients with OCD compared to healthy controls using implicit measures. However, in contrast to previous studies, we found an implicit approach bias towards aggressive self-statements for OCD patients scoring high in the symptom dimensions obsessing and hoarding compared to healthy controls. A major frontier in neuroscience is to find neural correlates of perception, learning, decision making, and a variety of other types of behavior. In the last decades, modern devices allow simultaneous recordings of different operant responses and the electrical activity of large neuronal populations. However, the commercially available instruments for studying operant conditioning are expensive, and the design of low-cost chambers has emerged as an appealing alternative to resource-limited laboratories engaged in animal behavior. In this article, we provide a full description of a platform that records the operant behavior and synchronizes it with the electrophysiological activity. The programming of this platform is open source, flexible, and adaptable to a wide range of operant conditioning tasks. We also show results of operant conditioning experiments with freely moving rats with simultaneous electrophysiological recordings.

Data from clinical and cross-sectional studies suggest that inflammation contributes to psychomotor slowing and attentional deficits found in depressive disorder. However, experimental evidence is still lacking. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of inflammation on psychomotor slowing using an experimental and acute model of inflammation, in which twenty-two healthy volunteers received an intravenous injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS, dose: 0.8 ​ng/kg body weight) and of placebo, in a randomized order following a double-blind within-subject crossover design. A reaction time test and a go/no-go test were conducted 3 ​h after the LPS/placebo injection and interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α concentrations were assessed. No effect of experimental inflammation on reaction times or errors for either test was found. However, inflammation was related to worse self-rated performance and lower effort put in the tasks. Exploratory analyses indicated that reaction time fluctuated more over time during acute inflammation. These data indicate that acute inflammation has only modest effects on psychomotor speed and attention in healthy subjects objectively, but alters the subjective evaluation of test performance. Increased variability in reaction time might be the first objective sign of altered psychomotor ability and would merit further investigation.

Prepared movements are more efficient than those that are not prepared for. Although changes in cortical activity have been observed prior to a forthcoming action, the circuits involved in motor preparation remain unclear. Here, we use in vivo two-photon calcium imaging to uncover changes in the motor cortex during variable waiting periods prior to a forepaw reaching task in mice. Consistent with previous reports, we observed a subset of neurons with increased activity during the waiting period; however, these neurons did not account for the degree of preparation as defined by reaction time (RT). Instead, the suppression of activity of distinct neurons in the same cortical area better accounts for RT. This suppression of neural activity resulted in a distinct and reproducible pattern when mice were well prepared. Thus, the selective suppression of network activity in the motor cortex may be a key feature of prepared movements.

The widespread availability of affordable head-mounted displays and easy access to virtual reality (VR) applications and games has significantly increased the use of such technology by the general public. Thus there is increasing interest in determining any risks of using such technology and any aftereffect from exposure. Head-mounted display manufacturers provide general usage guidance but this is ad hoc and there is limited recent evidence comparing early virtual environment studies with experiences from modern head-mounted displays. The primary objective of this study was to explore response activation and inhibition after participants experienced a typical virtual environment in a head-mounted display. Reaction times were collected with a robust cued go/nogo test as pre- and post-tests. Participants (n ​= ​22, female ​= ​11) played Minecraft VR for 15 ​minutes using an Oculus Rift headset. In contrast to other studies, the results showed no significant impact on reaction times across response activation or inhibition. However, evidence of participant fatigue in the reaction time tests was found. This work confirms safe use of virtual reality experiences in modern head-mounted displays for short duration exposures and identifies issues with reaction time testing that are in need of further investigation.

This study investigated semantic priming in 18-month-old infants using the inter-modal priming technique, focusing on the effects of prime repetition on saliency. Our findings showed that prime repetition led to longer looking times at target referents for related primes compared to unrelated primes, supporting the existence of a structured semantic system in infants as young as 18 months. The results are consistent with both Spreading Activation and Distributed models of semantic priming. Additionally, our findings highlighted the impact of prime-target stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) on priming effects, revealing positive, negative, or no priming effects depending on the chosen SOA. A post-hoc explanation of this finding points to negative priming as a possible mechanism. Background: Impaired daytime vigilance is an important consequence of OSA, but several studies have reported no association between objective measurements of vigilance and the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Notably, the AHI does not quantify the degree of flow limitation, that is, the extent to which ventilation fails to meet intended ventilation (ventilatory drive)., Research Question: Is flow limitation during sleep associated with daytime vigilance in OSA?, Study Design and Methods: Nine hundred ninety-eight participants with suspected OSA completed a 10-min psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) before same-night in-laboratory polysomnography. Flow limitation frequency (percent of flow-limited breaths) during sleep was quantified using airflow shapes (eg, fluttering and scooping) from nasal pressure airflow. Multivariable regression assessed the association between flow limitation frequency and the number of lapses (response times > 500 ms, primary outcome), adjusting for age, sex, BMI, total sleep time, depression, and smoking status., Results: Increased flow limitation frequency was associated with decreased vigilance: a 1-SD (35.3%) increase was associated with 2.1 additional PVT lapses (95% CI, 0.7-3.7; P = .003). This magnitude was similar to that for age, where a 1-SD increase (13.5 years) was associated with 1.9 additional lapses. Results were similar after adjusting for AHI, hypoxemia severity, and arousal severity. The AHI was not associated with PVT lapses (P = .20). In secondary exploratory analysis, flow limitation frequency was associated with mean response speed (P = .012), median response time (P = .029), fastest 10% response time (P = .041), slowest 10% response time (P = .018), and slowest 10% response speed (P = .005)., Interpretation: Increased flow limitation during sleep was associated with decreased daytime vigilance in individuals with suspected OSA, independent of the AHI. Position-specific intrusions of items from prior lists are rare but important phenomena that distinguish broad classes of theory in serial memory. They are uniquely predicted by position coding theories, which assume items on all lists are associated with the same set of codes representing their positions. Activating a position code activates items associated with it in current and prior lists in proportion to their distance from the activated position. Thus, prior list intrusions are most likely to come from the coded position. Alternative "item dependent" theories based on associations between items and contexts built from items have difficulty accounting for the position specificity of prior list intrusions. We tested the position coding account with a position-cued recognition task designed to produce prior list interference. Cuing a position should activate a position code, which should activate items in nearby positions in the current and prior lists. We presented lures from the prior list to test for position-specific activation in response time and error rate; lures from nearby positions should interfere more. We found no evidence for such interference in 10 experiments, falsifying the position coding prediction. We ran two serial recall experiments with the same materials and found position-specific prior list intrusions. These results challenge all theories of serial memory: Position coding theories can explain the prior list intrusions in serial recall and but not the absence of prior list interference in cued recognition. People are often faced with repeated risky decisions that involve uncertainty. In sequential risk-taking tasks, like the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), the underlying decision process is not yet fully understood. Dual-process theory proposes that human cognition involves two main families of processes, often referred to as System 1 (fast and automatic) and System 2 (slow and conscious). We cross models of the BART with different architectures of the two systems to yield a pool of computational dual-process models that are evaluated on multiple performance measures (e.g., parameter identifiability, model recovery, and predictive accuracy). Results show that the best-performing model configuration assumes the two systems are competitively connected, an evaluation process based on the Scaled Target Learning model of the BART, and an assessment rate that incorporates sensitivity to the trial number, pumping opportunity, and bias to engage in System 1. Findings also shed light on how modeling choices and response times in a dual-process framework can benefit our understanding of sequential risk-taking behavior., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc. Purpose: To assess the response time associated with visual performance (VP) tasks in the presence of defocus in different presbyopic populations. Methods: 58 eyes between the ages of 35 and 50 years were studied. Subjects were categorized as pre-presbyopic (35–39 years), early-presbyopic (40–45 years), and mid-presbyopic (46–50 years). VP measurements obtained monocularly included distance and near high contrast (HC) and low contrast (LC) optotype recognition, and contrast threshold at 12 cpd for different defocus magnitudes between 0D and 3D in 1D steps. Response time defined as the time taken to recognize and verbalize an optotype, was compared among different presbyopic age groups. Results: From 58 eyes, mean (SD) response time for high contrast distance visual acuity for 0D through 3D ranged between 1.48 (0.23) and 1.87 (0.31) s, whereas low contrast distance visual acuity ranged between 1.5 (0.22) and 2.09 (0.49) s. Mean response time for high contrast near visual acuity for 0D through 3D ranged between 1.56 (0.19) and 2.23 (0.45) s. However, for low contrast near visual acuity it ranged between 1.75 (0.32) and 2.71 (0.94) s. Mean (SD) response time for 12 cpd ranged between 2.11 (0.50) and 5.72 (1.09) s. ANOVA revealed a significant difference in response time for distance, near visual acuity and contrast sensitivity as a function of defocus for different age groups. Conclusions: Response time is increased in the presence of increasing defocus for both distance and near visual acuity and could impact on performance for critical tasks. Full correction of visual acuity at distance and near in presbyopes is warranted always.

Intra-subject variation in reaction time (ISVRT) is a developmentally-important phenomenon that decreases from childhood through young adulthood in parallel with the development of executive functions and networks. Prior work has shown a significant association between trial-by-trial variations in reaction time (RT) and trial-by-trial variations in brain activity as measured by the blood-oxygenated level-dependent (BOLD) response in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies. It remains unclear, however, whether such “RT-BOLD” relationships vary with age. Here, we determined whether such trial-by-trial relationships vary with age in a cross-sectional design. We observed an association between age and RT-BOLD relationships in 11 clusters located in visual/occipital regions, frontal and parietal association cortex, precentral/postcentral gyrus, and thalamus. Some of these relationships were negative, reflecting increased BOLD associated with decreased RT, manifesting around the time of stimulus presentation and positive several seconds later. Critically for present purposes, all RT-BOLD relationships increased with age. Thus, RT-BOLD relationships may reflect robust, measurable changes in the brain-behavior relationship across development.

It has been suggested that intra-individual variability (IIV) in performance on attention and other cognitive tasks might be a cognitive endophenotype in individuals with ADHD. Despite robust IIV findings in behavioral data, only sparse data exist on how what type of brain dysfunction underlies variable response times. In this study, we asked whether ADHD IIV in reaction time on a commonly-used test of attention might be related to variation in hemodynamic responses (HRs) observed trial-to-trial. Based on previous studies linking IIV to regions within the “default mode” network (DMN), we predicted that adolescents with ADHD would have higher HR variability in the DMN compared with controls, and this in turn would be related to behavioral IIV. We also explored the influence of social anxiety on HR variability in ADHD as means to test whether higher arousal associated with high trait anxiety would affect the neural abnormalities. We assessed single-trial variability of HRs, estimated from fMRI event-related responses elicited during an auditory oddball paradigm in adolescents with ADHD and healthy controls (11–18 years old; N = 46). Adolescents with ADHD had higher HR variability compared with controls in anterior regions of the DMN. This effect was specific to ADHD and not associated with traits of age, IQ and anxiety. However, an ADHD effect of higher HR variability also appeared in a basal ganglia network, but for these brain regions the relationships of HR variability and social anxiety levels were more complex. Performance IIV correlated significantly with variability of HRs in both networks. These results suggest that assessment of trial-to-trial HR variability in ADHD provides information beyond that detectable through analysis of behavioral data and average brain activation levels, revealing specific neural correlates of a possible ADHD IIV endophenotype.

Objectives: The existing literature on total knee arthroplasty (TKA) does not provide clear data on step reaction time and proprioception and gait in shaped pathways. This study investigated the relationship between proprioception and reaction time with walking performance in shaped pathways in older patients undergoing TKA., Design: A cross-sectional observational study., Setting and Participants: An orthopedic outpatient clinic with 103 older patients with TKA after a minimum of 6 months after surgery., Methods: Participants were evaluated with Figure-of-8 Walk Test (F8WT), L Test, Tinnetti Gait Test (TGT), proprioception measurement with an app-based inclinometer, and step reaction time (SRT) test. The same assessor carried out all evaluations., Results: F8WT showed a strong correlation with SRT-right, SRT-left, and Tinetti Gait Test (TGT), respectively (r 1  = 0.628, r 2  = 0.619, r 3  = -0.615, P < .01). In addition, F8WT was moderately correlated with Right Leg Proprioception Test (RLPT) and Left Leg Proprioception Test (LLPT), respectively (r 1  = 0.487, r 2  = 0.439, P < .01). There was a moderate correlation between L Test with RLRT, LLRT, and TGT, respectively (r 1  = 0.597, r 2  = 0.584, r 3  = -0.542, P < .01). Besides, there was a weak positive correlation between L Test with RLPT and LLPT, respectively (r 1  = 0.394, r 2  = 0.335, P < .01). A regression model showed that the L test was related to RLRT, LLRT, and TGT (R 2  = 0.432, P < .001). The higher ability of the L test was weakly associated with higher levels of TGT (standardized β = -0.28, P = .0012). Besides, regression analysis also proved that F8WT was related to RLRT, LLRT, and TGT (R 2  = 0.522, P < .001). The most highly associated parameter was LLRT (standardized β = 0.958, P = .003)., Conclusions and Implications: Gait in shaped pathways is associated with proprioception, reaction time, and balance ability in older patients with TKA. The literature suggesting acute exercise benefits cognitive function has been largely confined to single cognitive domains and measures of reliant on measures of central tendencies. Furthermore, studies suggest cognitive intra-individual variability (IIV) to reflect cognitive efficiency and provide unique insights into cognitive function, but there is limited knowledge on the effects of acute exercise on IIV. To this end, this study examined the effects of acute exercise on three different cognitive domains, executive function, implicit learning, and hippocampal-dependent memory function using behavioral performance and event-related potentials (ERPs). Furthermore, this study also sought to explore the effects of an acute bout of exercise on IIV using the RIDE algorithm to separate signals into individuals components based on latency variability. Healthy adult participants (N=20; 26.3±4.8years) completed a randomized cross-over trial with seated rest or 30min of high intensity cycling. Before and after each condition, participants completed a cognitive battery consisting of the Eriksen Flanker task, implicit statistical learning task, and a spatial reconstruction task. While exercise did not affect Flanker or spatial reconstruction performance, there were exercise related decreases in accuracy (F=5.47; P=0.040), slowed reaction time (F=5.18; P=0.036), and decreased late parietal positivity (F=4.26; P=0.046). However, upon adjusting for performance and ERP variability, there were exercise related decreases in Flanker reaction time (F=24.00; P<0.001), and reduced N2 amplitudes (F=13.03; P=0.002), and slower P3 latencies (F=3.57; P=0.065) for incongruent trials. Background and Objectives: High-worry individuals have been assumed to show attentional bias towards threat, particularly under high uncertainty. This study experimentally investigated the effect of uncertainty on attentional bias in subclinical worriers., Methods: A visual dot-probe task combined with eye-tracking was used to assess participants' attentional bias towards blurred and unfiltered stimuli. Fifty high-worry and 47 low-worry participants were randomly assigned to either the high- or low-uncertainty threat condition. Aversive noise bursts were delivered either unpredictably (the high-uncertainty threat condition) or predictably (the low-uncertainty threat condition) during the visual dot-probe task., Results: In the low-uncertainty threat condition, high-worry participants exhibited enhanced attentional engagement towards blurred pictures compared to low-worry participants. They also had shorter initial fixation latencies on blurred pictures than on unfiltered pictures. In the high-uncertainty threat condition, high-worry participants demonstrated more difficulty in disengaging from threatening pictures compared to low-worry participants., Limitation: First, this study used a nonclinical sample. Second, the power was limited with regard to the analysis of eye-movement data. Third, anxiety and worry induced by noise bursts were measured using subjective rating scales only. Early childhood is characterized by robust developmental changes in cognitive control. However, our understanding of intra-individual change in neural indices of cognitive control during this period remains limited. Here, we examined developmental changes in event-related potential (ERP) indices of cognitive control from preschool through first grade, in a large and diverse sample of children (N = 257). We recorded ERPs during a visual Go/No-Go task. N2 and P3b mean amplitudes were extracted from the observed waveforms (Go and No-Go) and the difference wave (No-Go minus Go, or ∆). Latent growth curve modeling revealed that while N2 Go and No-Go amplitudes showed no linear change, P3b Go and No-Go amplitudes displayed linear decreases in magnitude (became less positive) over time. ∆N2 amplitude demonstrated a linear increase in magnitude (became more negative) over time whereas ∆P3b amplitude was more positive in kindergarten compared to preschool. Younger age in preschool predicted greater rates of change in ∆N2 amplitude, and higher maternal education predicted larger initial P3b Go and No-Go amplitudes in preschool. Background and Objectives: Schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (SSD) are characterized by impaired emotion processing and attention. SSD patients are more sensitive to the presence of emotional distractors. But despite growing interest on the emotion-attention interplay, emotional interference in SSD is far from fully understood. Moreover, research to date has not established the link between emotional interference and attentional control in SSD. This study thus aimed to investigate the effects of facial expression and attentional control in SSD, by manipulating perceptual load., Methods: Twenty-two SSD patients and 22 healthy controls performed a target-letter discrimination task with task-irrelevant angry, happy, and neutral faces. Target-letter was presented among homogenous (low load) or heterogenous (high load) distractor-letters. Accuracy and RT were analysed using (generalized) linear mixed-effect models., Results: Accuracy was significantly lower in SSD patients than controls, regardless of perceptual load and facial expression. Concerning RT, SSD patients were significantly slower than controls in the presence of neutral faces, but only at high load. No group differences were observed for angry and happy faces., Limitations: Heterogeneity of SSD, small sample size, lack of clinical control group, medication., Conclusions: One possible explanation is that neutral faces captured exogenous attention to a greater extent in SSD, thus challenging attentional control in perceptually demanding conditions. This may reflect abnormal processing of neutral faces in SSD. Intertemporal preference has been investigated mainly with a choice paradigm. However, a matching paradigm might be more informative for a proper inference about intertemporal preference and a deep understanding of the underlying cognitive mechanisms. This research involved two empirical studies using the matching paradigm and compared various corresponding dynamic models. These models were developed under either the framework of decision field theory, an exemplar theory assuming evidence accumulation, or a non-evidence-accumulation framework built upon the well-established notions of random utility and discrimination threshold (i.e., the RUDT framework). Most of these models were alternative-based whereas the others were attribute-based ones. Participants in Study 1 were required to fill in the amount of an immediate stimulus to make it as attractive as a delayed stimulus, whereas those in Study 2 needed to accomplish a more general matching task in which either the payoff amount or delay length of one stimulus was missing. Consistent behavioral regularities regarding both matching values and response times were revealed in these studies. The results of model comparison favored in general the RUDT framework as well as an attribute-based perspective on intertemporal preference. In addition, the predicted matching values and response times of the best RUDT model were also highly correlated with the observed data and replicated most observed behavioral regularities. Together, this research and previous modeling work on intertemporal choice suggest that evidence accumulation is not essential for generating intertemporal preference. There are several ways in which retrieval during a memory test can harm memory: (a) retrieval can cause an increase in interference due to the storage of additional information (i.e., item-noise); (b) retrieval can decrease accessibility to studied items due to context drift; and (c) retrieval can result in a trade in accuracy for speed as testing progresses. While these mechanisms produce similar outcomes in a study-test paradigm, they are dissociated in the 'continuous' recognition paradigm, where items are presented continuously and a participant's task is to detect a repeat of an item. In this paradigm, context drift results in worse performance with increasing study-test lag (the lag effect), whereas increasing item-noise is evident in a decrease in performance for later test trials in the sequence (the test position effect [TPE]). In the present investigation, we measured the influences of item-noise, context drift, and decision-related factors in a novel continuous recognition dataset using variants of the Osth et al. (2018) global matching model. We fit both choice and response times at the single trial level using state-of-the-art hierarchical Bayesian methods while incorporating crucial amendments to the modeling framework, including multiple context scales and sequential effects. Background and Objectives: Depression impairs working memory (WM). And, while many studies have documented impairment in WM during depression remission, those using the N-back task did not find differences between individuals with remitted depression and healthy controls. One reason for these findings may be that certain depression phenotypes, such as the childhood-onset form, which is likely to be associated with persistent WM problems, are underrepresented or unevenly represented in the studies. Because childhood-onset depression (COD) affects individuals while cognitive development is still ongoing, it is more likely to have lasting detrimental effects, as evidenced in residual memory impairment, than depression that onsets later in life. Further, it is unclear if depression episodes have cumulative effects on WM when measured via the N-back., Methods: We examined the effects of depression on WM performance (response time, accuracy, signal detection d') and subjective experience (difficulty, mental effort required) during a four-level N-back task among 112 adults with COD (42 currently depressed; 70 remitted depressed) and 80 never-depressed controls., Results: Compared to never-depressed controls, there was minimal evidence of impaired WM performance among participants with remitted or current depression; the groups also reported overall similar subjective experiences during the N-back. Notably, number of lifetime depressive episodes had a detrimental cumulative effect on response accuracy and d'., Limitations: WM was assessed only in regard to verbal memory.
