Background: This study aimed to identify factors that influence the mortality rate of patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data from 23 centers across 15 countries, spanning the period of March 2020 to December 2021, were retrospectively collected. The study population comprised patients who developed invasive pulmonary aspergillosis while being treated for COVID-19 in the intensive care unit. Cox regression and decision tree analyses were used to identify factors associated with mortality in patients with CAPA. Results: A total of 162 patients (males, 65.4 %; median age: 64 [25th–75th: 54.0–73.8] years) were included in the study, of whom 113 died during the 90-day follow-up period. The median duration from CAPA diagnosis to death was 12 (25th–75th: 7–19) days. In the multivariable Cox regression model, an age of ≥65 years (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.05, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.37–3.07), requiring vasopressor therapy at the time of CAPA diagnosis (HR: 1.80, 95 % CI: 1.17–2.76), and receiving renal replacement therapy at the time of CAPA diagnosis (HR: 2.27, 95 % CI: 1.35–3.82) were identified as predictors of mortality. Decision tree analysis revealed that patients with CAPA aged ≥65 years who received corticosteroid treatment for COVID-19 displayed higher mortality rates (estimated rate: 1.6, observed in 46 % of patients). Conclusion: This study concluded that elderly patients with CAPA who receive corticosteroids are at a significantly higher risk of mortality, particularly if they experience multiorgan failure.

The performance of a packed bed reactor for CO2 conversion to methanol was investigated. Because of the exothermic reaction, temperature and concentration gradients happen along the reactor. A 2D packed-bed reactor model was applied for numerical investigations, coupled with detailed reaction kinetics and transport phenomena. The effect of feed inlet pressure and temperature on CO2 conversion and temperature profiles along the reactor was evaluated. The results showed that firstly increase in the temperature in the reactor because of the presence of exothermic reactions and then slight decrease in the temperature at top section of the reactor. Pressure was decrease from 55 bar to around 54 bar along the reactor. It was found that the CO2 conversion at outlet of reactor was 18.18 % at T = 475 K and it was increased to 23 % at temperature of 498 K and 555 K. The CO2 conversion was reached its maximum at short distance from the reactor entrance at T = 555 K. Also, the outlet temperature of gas mixture was increased from 522.53 K to 534.56 K with increasing feed inlet pressure from 35 bar to 55 bar. The CO2 conversion was 18.12 %, 20.77 %, and 22.96 % at pressures equal to 35, 45, and 55 bar respectively.

Cockroaches are very capable of mechanically transmitting harmful microorganisms, which is seen to be a severe hazard to the general public's health. The purpose of this study was the evaluation of cockroach bacterial contamination in various locations throughout Babylon. 300 cockroaches were caught from different wards of the hospital, restaurants, and houses. Using PBS buffer, the external surface of the cockroaches was washed to collect bacteria. Standard phenotypic methods were used to identify and classify bacteria. Afterward, the bacterial resistance to different antibiotics was investigated using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion susceptibility test. The 200 (66.6 %) American cockroaches including 56 (18.7 %) Blattella germanica and 44 (14.6 %) Blatta orientalis were identified. Noteworthy, 96.6 % of cockroaches were infected with different bacteria. Bacillus strains, coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNs), and Escherichia coli were the most frequent among the isolated bacteria. On average, the highest antibiotic resistance was detected to cefotaxime, ampicillin, cephalothin, and kanamycin. On the other hand, the isolated bacteria showed high sensitivity to gentamicin, nitrofurantoin, tetracycline, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (SXT), and chloramphenicol. high antibiotic resistance in bacteria isolated from different wards of the hospital and the high potential of transmission of these bacteria by cockroaches is a serious warning for the health of society.

The fourth common reason of death among patients is gastric cancer (GC) and it is a dominant tumor type in Ease Asia. One of the problems in GC therapy is chemoresistance. Cisplatin (CP) is a platinum compound that causes DNA damage in reducing tumor progression and viability of cancer cells. However, due to hyperactivation of drug efflux pumps, dysregulation of genes and interactions in tumor microenvironment, tumor cells can develop resistance to CP chemotherapy. The current review focuses on the CP resistance emergence in GC cells with emphasizing on molecular pathways, pharmacological compounds for reversing chemoresistance and the role of nanostructures. Changes in cell death mechanisms such as upregulation of pro-survival autophagy can prevent CP-mediated apoptosis that results in drug resistance. Moreover, increase in metastasis via EMT induction induces CP resistance. Dysregulation of molecular pathways such as PTEN, PI3K/Akt, Nrf2 and others result in changes in CP response of GC cells. Non-coding RNAs determine CP response of GC cells and application of pharmacological compounds with activity distinct of CP can result in sensitivity in tumor cells. Due to efficacy of exosomes in transferring bioactive molecules such as RNA and DNA molecules among GC cells, exosomes can also result in CP resistance. One of the newest progresses in overcoming CP resistance in GC is application of nanoplatforms for delivery of CP in GC therapy that they can increase accumulation of CP at tumor site and by suppressing carcinogenic factors and overcoming biological barriers, they increase CP toxicity on cancer cells.

In this research, the magnesium ferrite/zinc oxide (MgFe2O4/ZnO) nanocomposite has been utilized as an effective adsorbent in the ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid-phase extraction (USA-DSPE) coupled to a spectrophotometric method for preconcentration of methylene blue (MB) and safranin O (SO) dyes. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analyses were performed to characterize and confirm the properties of the synthesized MgFe2O4/ZnO nanocomposite. Box-Behnken design (BBD) based on response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to optimize the variables. The results of this research showed that the maximum extraction efficiency was obtained at pH = 7, eluent volume of 140 µL, adsorbent amount of 1.53 mg, and ultrasonic time of 8 min. After optimization by RSM and using the Quadratic model, the extraction efficiency for MB and SO was 98.60% and 97.23%, respectively. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the data obtained from the experiment were consistent with the predicted model. Under optimal conditions, the calibration curve was linear in the range of 5–1000 µg/L (coefficient of determination of 0.9884) for MB and 10–1100 µg/L (coefficient of determination of 0.9973) for SO. The limit of detections (LOD) of the proposed method for MB and SO were determined as 1.5 µg/L and 3 µg/L, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSD, n = 5) for MB and SO were obtained as 1.1% and 2.1%, respectively. The results of adsorbent recovery revealed that MgFe2O4/ZnO nanocomposite could be used several times without a significant adsorbent efficiency loss. Furthermore, the findings of interference studies revealed that the presence of different ions does not cause substantial interference with the extraction of dyes. The environmental water samples analysis showed that the extraction efficiency for dyes was in the range of 93.74–99.11%.

COVID-19 vaccines are generally proven safe in all population and are highly recommended. However, rare adverse events have been reported. We hereby present a case of an 18-year-old man who presented to emergency department with fever, meningitis like symptoms, shortness of breath, chest pain, skin rash, and extreme fatigue. He had cardiac manifestations including hypotension, elevated troponin, and reduced ejection fraction. High inflammatory markers were also noted. He was initially worked up for and treated as a possible infectious etiology, but the microbiological studies were negative and there was no response to treatment. Since he had recently received booster dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination three weeks prior to onset of symptoms, a possibility of Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) was made. His presentation fulfilled all the diagnostic criteria. The possibility for MIS-C being related to vaccination was proposed after relevant serological tests showed that the antibodies, he had were due to COVID-19 vaccine, not to a prior infection. After he received appropriate immunomodulatory treatment (IVIG and methylprednisolone) as per the guideline, he showed marked clinical improvement. Our case report highlights the need to consider MIS-C as a potential differential in young patients who present with unexplained multisystem illness with increased inflammatory markers and negative microbiologic work-up. Due to the importance and efficiency of heat transfer in industrial equipment, studying refrigerants to improve their efficiency in heating or cooling was attracted much attention. In this paper, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is employed to study the refrigerant heat transfer capability inside an nanochannel. The thermal performance of simulated samples is examined by changing the heat flux (HF) and thermal conductivity (TC). The results reveal that after 10 ns, the TCs of the oils based on ester and hydrocracked were reached to 0.14 and 0.33 W/m.K, and the HFs were reached to 511 and 793 W/m2, respectively. The obtained results indicate a better thermal behavior for hydrocracked oil, which can also transfer more heat. Therefore, the hydrocracked was chosen as the based oil for the rest of the research. On the other hand, different percentages of Cu and Fe3O4 hybrid nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes are added to the hydrocracked oil. By increasing the nanoparticles’ percentage from 1 to 4%, the HF increases from 792 to 911 W/m2, and the TC also raises from 0.40 to 0.52 W/m.K. According to the results, adding the hybrid nanoparticles into the oil sample improves its thermal behavior. It is hoped that the obtained results in this research can be useful and applicable in the industry fields.

Summary: Objectives: To evaluates the management and outcome of non-iatrogenic pediatric and adolescence extremity arterial injuries in a resource-challenged setting. Methods: A retrospective study of the surgical management for non-iatrogenic extremity arterial trauma in pediatric and adolescence during the period from January 2008 to December 2015. This study was performed in two different countries at tertiary referral university and teaching hospitals having a specialized emergency and trauma centers. A thorough study of each patient record was collected from these centers including, the original demographic data and their clinical presentations. Operative data of each patient was also reported. Results: During the 8-year period of the study, 149 pediatric and adolescent extremity arterial trauma patients were treated. They were 93.3% male, and 6.7% female, respectively. The age ranged from 2 to 18 years with a mean of 10.25 ± 4.05 years. Lower extremity arterial trauma was recorded in 51%, while 49% were having upper extremity injuries. Primary repair with end-to-end vascular anastomosis was performed in 51.7%, while an interposition reversed saphenous vein graft was performed in 48.3%. The operative procedures were performed by an experienced vascular surgeon and well-trained pediatric surgeons and general surgeons. Pseudoaneurysms was recorded in 9% of cases. Fasciotomy was performed in 15% of cases. Conclusion: Treatment of pediatric and adolescent extremity arterial injuries with primary end-to-end vascular anastomoses or with the use of an interposition reversed saphenous vein graft is a reliable, feasible, and more cost-effectiveness technique with good results. Moreover, it should be adopted for all vascular trauma patients, whenever possible. Introduction: Telemicrobiology is a growing component of clinical microbiology informatics. However, few studies have been performed to assess the diagnostic utility of telemicroscopy systems in evaluating infectious agents. Objective: Evaluate multiple contemporary digital pathology platforms for use in diagnostic telemicrobiology. Materials and Methods: A mix of thirty cases that included viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitological findings were evaluated by four experts using ×40 whole slide imaging (WSI) scans, ×83 oil-immersion WSI scans, ×100 oil-immersion WSI scans, digital photomicrographs, and glass slides. Results: The ×83 WSI, ×100 WSI, and photomicrograph interpretations were not significantly different in quality and accuracy when compared to glass slide interpretations. The ×40 WSI interpretations were of lower quality and were more likely to be incorrect when compared to glass slide interpretations. Conclusions: In this study, high magnification, oil-immersion digital pathology platforms are better suited to support telemicrobiology applications and yield interpretations on par with glass slide evaluations.

Research has shown that alkali-activated concrete (AAC) is comparable to ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPCC) in terms of mechanical properties and may offer ecological benefits compared to OPCC. This study evaluates the energy and emission of AAC and OPCC across different classifications of concrete compressive strength (40, 60, and 100 ​MPa). Analysis indicates that the selection of constituent materials can substantially affect the energy and emission of AAC and OPCC. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the principal contributor to the energy and emission of OPCC, accounting for 80% of energy and 91% of emissions of OPCC. The activating solution, meanwhile, is the main contributor to the energy and CO2 emission of AAC. Normal strength AAC (40 ​MPa) shows 46% less energy and 73% less CO2 emission than OPCC. However, high-strength AAC (60 ​MPa), using metakaolin as a base material, experiences higher energy (8%) than OPCC yet the emission is 40% less than OPCC. A substitution of fly ash for metakaolin results in superior efficiency of AAC compared to OPCC. Two mixtures of ultra-high-strength AAC (100 ​MPa) result in contradictory findings. One mixture with a sodium hydroxide and silica fume activating solution shows 5% and 30% less energy and CO2 emission, while the other mixture with a sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate activating mixture is less efficient than OPCC.

Utility Cut Patching (UCP) is a major cause of pavement deterioration in city streets. The streets of the city of Riyadh are no exception. A study was undertaken to investigate factors related to UCP and possibly contributing to pavement deterioration. Existing pavement condition, materials properties of patch and pavement, and geometry of trench were among factors investigated. Pavement deterioration was evaluated by deflection measurements at various points on the patch and existing pavement using falling weight deflectometer. Analysis of the results indicated that deflection at center of patch is the most critical one. Furthermore, deflection readings at various points on the patch indicated the dependency of patch deflection on trench geometry and existing pavement structural conditions. Investigation of patching effects on pavement roughness suggested an increase in roughness of pavement due to UCP.

Neuropathy is a disturbance of function or a pathological change in nerves causing poor health and quality of life. A proportion of chronic pain patients in the community suffer persistent neuropathic pain symptoms because current drug therapies may be suboptimal so there is a need for new therapeutic modalities. This study investigated the neuroprotective flavonoid, 6-methoxyflavone (6MF), as a potential therapeutic agent and gabapentin as the standard comparator, against neuropathic models. Thus, neuropathic-like states were induced in Sprague-Dawley rats using sciatic nerve chronic constriction injury (CCI) mononeuropathy and systemic administration of streptozotocin (STZ) to induce polyneuropathy. Subsequent behaviors reflecting allodynia, hyperalgesia, and vulvodynia were assessed and any possible motoric side-effects were evaluated including locomotor activity, as well as rotarod discoordination and gait disruption. 6MF (25-75 mg/kg) antagonized neuropathic-like nociceptive behaviors including static- (pressure) and dynamic- (light brushing) hindpaw allodynia plus heat/cold and pressure hyperalgesia in the CCI and STZ models. 6MF also reduced static and dynamic components of vulvodynia in the STZ induced polyneuropathy model. Additionally, 6MF reversed CCI and STZ suppression of locomotor activity and rotarod discoordination, suggesting a beneficial activity on motor side effects, in contrast to gabapentin. In this study, eleven novel acyl hydrazides derivative of polyhydroquinoline were synthesized, characterized and screened for their in vitro anti-diabetic and anti-glycating activities. Seven compounds 2a, 2d, 2i, 2 h, 2j, 2f, and 2 g exhibited notable α-amylase inhibitory activity having IC 50 values from 3.51 ± 2.13 to 11.92 ± 2.30 µM. Similarly, six compounds 2d, 2f, 2 h, 2i, 2j, and 2 g displayed potent α-glucosidase inhibitory activity compared to the standard acarbose. Moreover, eight derivatives 2d, 2 g, 2f, 2j, 2a, 2i, 2 g, and 2e showed excellent anti-glycating activity with IC 50 values from 6.91 ± 2.66 to 15.80 ± 1.87 µM when compared them with the standard rutin (IC 50  = 22.5 ± 0.90 µM). Molecular docking was carried out to predict the binding modes of all the compounds with α-amylase and α-glucosidase. The docking analysis revealed that most of the compounds established strong interactions with α-amylase and α-glucosidase. All compounds fitted well into the binding pockets of α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Among all compounds 2a and 2f were most potent based on docking score -8.2515 and -7.3949 against α-amylase and α-glucosidase respectively. In recent decades, analytical techniques have increasingly focused on the precise quantification. Achieving this goal has been accomplished with conventional analytical approaches that typically require extensive pretreatment methods, significant reagent usage, and expensive instruments. The need for rapid, simple, and highly selective identification platforms has become increasingly pronounced. Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) has emerged as a promising avenue for developing advanced sensors that can potentially surpass the limitations of conventional detection methods. In recent years, the application of MIP-silica materials-based sensors has garnered significant attention owing to their distinctive characteristics. These types of probes hold a distinct advantage in their remarkable stability and durability, all of which provide a suitable sensing platform in severe environments. Moreover, the substrate composed of silica materials offers a vast surface area for binding, thereby facilitating the efficient detection of even minuscule concentrations of targets. As a result, sensors based on MIP-silica materials have the potential to be widely applied in various industries, including medical diagnosis, and food safety. In the present review, we have conducted an in-depth analysis of the latest research developments in the field of MIPs-silica materials based sensors, with a focus on succinctly summarizing and elucidating the most crucial findings. Transient embryonic carotid-vertebrobasilar anastomoses can intermittently persist beyond the embryonic period. These vascular anomalies are often serendipitously identified during evaluation for unrelated disease states and pathologies. The persistent proatlantal intersegmental artery is one such recognized rare fetal anastomotic connection, often arising unilaterally. Bilateral persistence of the proatlantal anastomosis is a rarer occurrence, seldom described in the literature. We report a case of bilateral concurrent type I and type II proatlantal arteries, describe the embryology of persistent carotid-vertebrobasilar anastomoses, and consider pertinent clinical implications., (© 2024 The Authors. Background and Objectives: Bangladesh's high maternal mortality ratio is exacerbated by delivery-related complications, particularly in hard-to-reach (HtR) areas with limited healthcare access. Despite this, few studies have explored delivery-related complications and factors contributing to these complications among the disadvantaged population. This study aimed to investigate the factors contributing to delivery-related complications and their consequences among the mothers residing in the HtR areas of Bangladesh., Methods: Data were collected using a cross-sectional study design from 13 HtR sub-districts of Bangladesh between September 2019 and October 2019. Data from 1,290 recently delivered mothers were analysed., Results: Around 32% (95% CI: 29.7-34.8) of the mothers reported at least one delivery-related complication. Prolonged labour pain (21%) was the highest reported complication during the delivery, followed by obstructive labour (20%), fever (14%), severe headache (14%). Mothers with higher education, a higher number of antenatal care (ANC) visits, complications during ANC, employed, and first-time mothers had higher odds of reporting delivery-related complications. More than one-half (51%) of these mothers had normal vaginal delivery. Nearly one-fifth (20%) of mothers who reported delivery-related complications were delivered by unskilled health workers at homes. On the other hand, about one-fifth (19%) of the mothers without any complications during delivery had a caesarean delivery. Nine out of ten of these caesarean deliveries were done at the private facilities., Conclusion: Delivery-related complications are significantly related to a woman's reproductive history and other background characteristics. Heart transplantation remains the gold standard treatment for end-stage heart failure patients without contraindications. However, limited donor availability and long wait times have created a need for left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) to be used as a bridge to transplantation in appropriately selected patients. Improvements in LVAD technology have resulted in improved short- and long-term outcomes, further supporting the use of these devices for a bridge-to-transplant (BTT) indication. LVAD utilization as BTT exhibits notable disparities worldwide, mainly due to variations in organ availability, allocation policies, and financial constraints. Although Europe has experienced a consistent increase in the use of LVAD for this purpose, the United Network for Organ Sharing 2018 policy amendment resulted in a significant reduction in the number of LVADs used for BTT in the US. To overcome this issue, modifications in the US allocation policy to consider factors such as days on device support, age, and type of complications may be necessary to potentially increase implantation rates.The authors provide an overview comparing the current state of heart transplantation in the US and Europe, with a particular focus on how distinct allocation policies and organ availability impact medical practices. Fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics have become a subject of growing concern due to their increasing presence in the environment, particularly in the soil and groundwater. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the attributes, prevalence, ecotoxicity, and remediation approaches associated with FQs in environmental matrices. The paper discusses the physicochemical properties that influence the fate and transport of FQs in soil and groundwater, exploring the factors contributing to their prevalence in these environments. Furthermore, the ecotoxicological implications of FQ contamination in soil and aquatic ecosystems are reviewed, shedding light on the potential risks to environmental and human health. The latter part of the review is dedicated to an extensive analysis of remediation approaches, encompassing both in-situ and ex-situ methods employed to mitigate FQ contamination. The critical evaluation of these remediation strategies provides insights into their efficacy, limitations, and environmental implications. In this investigation, a correlation between FQ antibiotics and climate change is established, underlining its significance in addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study further identifies and delineates multiple research gaps, proposing them as key areas for future investigational directions. Background: The intricate relationship between mental health disorders, notably anxiety and depression, and chest pain associated with non-obstructive coronary artery disease has become a focus of investigation., Methods: This study from the Coronary Microvascular Disease Registry (CMDR) evaluated the association of mental health disorders and coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) among patients with angina with no obstructive coronary artery disease (ANOCA) who had undergone comprehensive invasive physiological testing for CMD. Clinical data regarding baseline characteristics, comorbidities, and noninvasive cardiac testing were obtained from chart review. The primary outcome of interest was the potential relationship between mental health diagnoses and the presence of CMD., Results: Of patients included in the CMDR, 27 % (41/152) had at least one documented mental health disorder diagnosis (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision codes) and CMD. There was no difference in mental health diagnosis prevalence between CMD-positive and CMD-negative patients (21.1 % vs. 28.9 %, p = 0.34). The most common mental health diagnoses were depression (15.8 %) and anxiety (15.8 %). Furthermore, 46.3 % (19/41) of patients with mental health disorders were prescribed psychiatric medications, with the most common being benzodiazepines (26.8 %)., Conclusion: Patients with chest pain not due to CMD did not have an increased prevalence of mental health disorders compared with patients with ANOCA due to CMD, challenging the notion of a psychosomatic component in the pathogenesis of ANOCA., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest Kalyan R. Cancer-related anorexia-cachexia (CRAC) comprises one of the most common syndromes of advanced cancer patients. The prevalence of CRAC increases from 50% to 80% before death. CRAC is associated not only with impaired quality of life in patients and family members but also with shorter survival. The management of CRAC is a great challenge in clinical practice. There are no definite practice guidelines yet for the prevention and treatment of CRAC. A multimodal strategy is the most effective way to treat anorexia-cachexia. Numerous medications have been suggested and used in clinical trials, while others are still being studied on experimental animals. These medications include branched-chain amino acids, eicosapentaenoic acid, thalidomide, cytokine inhibitors, steroids, antiserotoninergic medications, and appetite stimulants. The benefits of supportive care interventions and the advancement of exciting new pharmacological medicines for anorexia-cachexia are becoming more widely recognized. Background: The Multi-Omics for Mothers and Infants consortium aims to improve birth outcomes. Preterm birth is a major obstetrical complication globally and causes significant infant and childhood morbidity and mortality., Objective: We analyzed placental samples (basal plate, placenta or chorionic villi, and the chorionic plate) collected by the 5 Multi-Omics for Mothers and Infants sites, namely The Alliance for Maternal and Newborn Health Improvement Bangladesh, The Alliance for Maternal and Newborn Health Improvement Pakistan, The Alliance for Maternal and Newborn Health Improvement Tanzania, The Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth Bangladesh, and The Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth Zambia. The goal was to analyze the morphology and gene expression of samples collected from preterm and uncomplicated term births., Study Design: The teams provided biopsies from 166 singleton preterm (<37 weeks' gestation) and 175 term (≥37 weeks' gestation) deliveries. The samples were fixed in formalin and paraffin embedded. Tissue sections from these samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and subjected to morphologic analyses. Other placental biopsies (n=35 preterm, 21 term) were flash frozen, which enabled RNA purification for bulk transcriptomics., Results: The morphologic analyses revealed a surprisingly high rate of inflammation that involved the basal plate, placenta or chorionic villi, and the chorionic plate. The rate of inflammation in chorionic villus samples, likely attributable to chronic villitis, ranged from 25% (Pakistan site) to 60% (Zambia site) of cases. Leukocyte infiltration in this location vs in the basal plate or chorionic plate correlated with preterm birth. Our transcriptomic analyses identified 267 genes that were differentially expressed between placentas from preterm vs those from term births (123 upregulated, 144 downregulated). Mapping the differentially expressed genes onto single-cell RNA sequencing data from human placentas suggested that all the component cell types, either singly or in subsets, contributed to the observed dysregulation. Consistent with the histopathologic findings, gene ontology analyses highlighted the presence of leukocyte infiltration or activation and inflammatory responses in both the fetal and maternal compartments., Conclusion: The relationship between placental inflammation and preterm birth is appreciated in developed countries. In this study, we showed that this link also exists in developing geographies. Climate change and cadmium (Cd) contamination pose severe threats to rice production and food security. Biochar (BC) has emerged as a promising soil amendment for mitigating these challenges. To investigate the BC effects on paddy soil upon GHG emissions, Cd bioavailability, and its accumulation, a meta-analysis of published data from 2000 to 2023 was performed. Data Manager 5.3 and GetData plot Digitizer software were used to obtain and process the data for selected parameters. Our results showed a significant increase of 18% in soil pH with sewage sludge BC application, while 9% increase in soil organic carbon (SOC) using bamboo chips BC. There was a significant reduction in soil bulk density (8%), but no significant effects were observed for soil porosity, except for wheat straw BC which reduced the soil porosity by 6%. Sewage sludge and bamboo chips BC significantly reduced carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) by 7-8% while municipal biowaste reduced methane (CH 4 ) emissions by 2%. In the case of heavy metals, sunflower seedshells-derived materials and rice husk BC significantly reduced the bioavailable Cd in paddy soils by 24% and 12%, respectively. Cd uptake by rice roots was lowered considerably by the addition of kitchen waste (22%), peanut hulls (21%), and corn cob (15%) based BC. Similarly, cotton sticks, kitchen waste, peanut hulls, and rice husk BC restricted Cd translocation from rice roots to shoots by 22%, 27%, 20%, and 19%, respectively, while sawdust and rice husk-based BC were effective for reducing Cd accumulation in rice grains by 25% and 13%. Regarding rice yield, cotton sticks-based BC significantly increased the yield by 37% in Cd-contaminated paddy soil. Objective: To design and validate the first visual acuity (VA) chart in the Canadian Aboriginal syllabics (CAS) alphabet., Design: Prospective, nonrandomized, within-subjects cross-sectional study., Participants: Twenty Latin- and CAS-reading subjects were recruited from Ullivik, a residence in Montreal for Inuit patients., Methods: VA charts were made in Latin and in CAS using letters conserved across Inuktitut, Cree, and Ojibwe languages. Fonts were similar in style and size between charts. Each chart was made for a viewing distance of 3 m, with 11 lines of VAs from 20/200 to 20/10. Charts were created using LaTeX to ensure proper formatting and optotype sizing and displayed to scale on an iPad Pro. Each participant had his or her best-corrected VA for each eye measured using the Latin and CAS charts sequentially for a total of 40 eyes., Results: Median best-corrected VAs were 0.04 logMAR (range, -0.06-0.54) and 0.07 logMAR (range, 0-0.54) for the Latin and CAS charts, respectively. Median difference between CAS and Latin charts was 0 logMAR (range, -0.08-0.1). Mean ± SD difference between charts was 0.01 ± 0.03 logMAR. Pearson's r correlation between groups was 0.97. The two-tailed paired t test between groups was p = 0.26., Conclusions: We demonstrate here the first VA chart in Canadian Aboriginal syllabics for Inuktitut-, Ojibwe-, and Cree-reading patients. Cancer is still one of the deadliest diseases, and diagnosing and treating it effectively remains difficult. As a result, advancements in earlier detection and better therapies are urgently needed. Conventional chemotherapy induces chemoresistance, has non-specific toxicity, and has a meager efficacy. Natural materials like nanosized clay mineral formations of various shapes (platy, tubular, spherical, and fibrous) with tunable physicochemical, morphological, and structural features serve as potential templates for these. As multifunctional biocompatible nanocarriers with numerous applications in cancer research, diagnosis, and therapy, their submicron size, individual morphology, high specific surface area, enhanced adsorption ability, cation exchange capacity, and multilayered organization of 0.7-1 nm thick single sheets have attracted significant interest. Kaolinite, halloysite, montmorillonite, laponite, bentonite, sepiolite, palygorskite, and allophane are the most typical nanoclay minerals explored for cancer. These multilayered minerals can function as nanocarriers to effectively carry a variety of anticancer medications to the tumor site and improve their stability, dispersibility, sustained release, and transport. Proteins and DNA/RNA can be transported using nanoclays with positive and negative surfaces. The platform for phototherapeutic agents can be nanoclays. Clays with bio-functionality have been developed using various surface engineering techniques, which could help treat cancer. Bio-composites, which can be obtained from the renewable natural resources, are fascinating material for use as sustainable biomaterials with essential properties like biodegradable, bio-compatibility as well cyto-compatibility etc. These properties are useful for bio-medical including wound healing applications. In this study, fibre obtained banana pseudo stem of banana plant, which is otherwise wasted, was used as a material along with chitosan and guar gum to fabricate a banana fibre-biopolymer composite patch. The physiochemical properties of the patches were examined using Fourier Transformed Infra-red spectrophotometer (FT-IR), tensile tester, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), contact angle tester, swelling and degradation studies. We further demonstrated that a herbal drug, Nirgundi could be loaded to the patch showed controlled its release at different pHs. The patch had good antibacterial property and supported proliferation of mouse fibroblast cells. Introduction: Inward rectifier K + (Kir) channel, a major factor determining endothelial membrane potential, regulates Ca 2+ influx and vasodilator release, which is impaired in preeclamptic blood vessels. Previously, human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) Kir currents were shown to decrease after incubating in preeclamptic plasma. We aimed to demonstrate whether sFlt-1, which is high in preeclamptic blood, could inhibit Kir channel function and expression., Methods: HUVECs were cultured in regular medium, regular medium with added sFlt-1, or serum from preeclampsia patients or normal pregnant women (Control, sFlt-1, PE, or NP, respectively). Using whole-cell patch clamp technique, we identified Kir currents with the Kir blocker 2 mM BaCl 2 and compared the currents among groups. The expression of Kir 2.1 and 2.2 channels were determined using immunofluorescent staining., Results: sFlt-1 and PE groups exhibited similar Kir currents, while NP group possessed significantly larger currents, similar to Control group currents. Moreover, sFlt-1 and sFlt-1/PlGF ratio showed strong negative correlation with Kir currents (r = -0.71 and -0.70, respectively; P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in mean fluorescence intensity representing Kir 2.1 and 2.2 channels expression in all four groups., Discussion: This is the first report to demonstrate sFlt-1 inhibition against Kir currents, which could lead to maternal endothelial dysfunction and hypertension seen in preeclampsia. However, channel expression was unaffected by sFlt-1 incubation, suggesting dysfunctions of channel or other processes (e.g., membrane translocation). Agricultural pest identification is a prerequisite for increasing crop production and meeting global food demands. Generally, numerous phenotypic and genotypic features are widely utilized for species-level pest identification. However, the approaches are time-consuming and require expert knowledge in relevant fields. Numerous image-based machine learning (ML) models also exist to identify insect pests in agricultural fields. The models are significantly rely on a large, manually curated dataset and are close-set in nature. Our study aims to develop an open set pest identification approach by adding the capability of rejecting any irrelevant inputs. Tephritid fruit flies (Diptera:Tephritidae) are considered as an example since they are the most economically important agricultural pests worldwide. Images of the fruit flies were collected from a publicly available database and filtered to exclude uninformative images using a deep learning model (Inception-V3) and an unsupervised k-means clustering method. For the closed-set identification task, our EfficientNet-B2 model classified four major genera of notorious tephritid flies, namely, Anastrepha, Ceratitis, Rhagoletis, and Bactrocera with an accuracy of 89.65%. We further improvise our proposed model for open-set recognition tasks to leverage the identification beyond the trained datasets. The open set model achieved an overall accuracy of 86.48% and a macro F1-score of 94.44% on the four genera and an unknown class. Our proposed model can be a practical and effective pest identification tool for harmful fruit flies. Purpose: Timely and accurate triage of upper extremity injuries is critical, but current perfusion monitoring technologies have shortcomings. These limitations are especially pronounced in patients with darker skin tones. This pilot study evaluates a Eulerian Video Magnification (EVM) algorithm combined with color channel waveform extraction to enable video-based measurement of hand and finger perfusion., Methods: Videos of 10 volunteer study participants with Fitzpatrick skin types III-VI were taken in a controlled environment during normal perfusion and tourniquet-induced ischemia. Videos were EVM processed, and red/green/blue color channel characteristics were extracted to produce waveforms. These videos were assessed by surgeons with a range of expertise in hand injuries. The videos were randomized and presented in 1 of 3 ways: unprocessed, EVM processed, and EVM with waveform output (EVM+waveform). Survey respondents indicated whether the video showed an ischemic or perfused hand or if they were unable to tell. We used group comparisons to evaluate response accuracy across video types, skin tones, and respondent groups., Results: Of the 51 providers to whom the surveys were sent, 25 (49%) completed them. Using the Pearson χ 2 test, the frequencies of correct responses were significantly higher in the EVM+waveform category than in the unprocessed or EVM videos. Additionally, the agreement was higher among responses to the EVM+waveform questions than among responses to the unprocessed or EVM processed. The accuracy and agreement from the EVM+waveform group were consistent across all skin pigmentations evaluated., Conclusions: Video-based EVM processing combined with waveform extraction from color channels improved the surgeon's ability to identify tourniquet-induced finger ischemia via video across all skin types tested., Clinical Relevance: Eulerian Video Magnification with waveform extraction improved the assessment of perfusion in the distal upper extremity and has potential future applications, including triage, postsurgery vascular assessment, and telemedicine., (Copyright © 2024 American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Nitroaromatic compounds are common explosives and toxic pollutants, the selective and sensitive detection of which is of great importance. Herein, a facile and sensitive fluorescent sensor L was constructed for the sensing of TNP based on the hexahomotrioxacalix[3]arene skeleton. The fluorescence emission of L was drastically quenched in the presence of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), while other tested NACs, metal ions, and anions induced negligible changes. Under the optimized conditions, the spectroscopic studies revealed that L exhibited extremely sensitive and selective TNP recognition, with a detection limit of 9.17 × 10 -7  M and a quenching constant of 2.44 × 10 4  M -1 . The sensitivity of sensor L for TNP was attributed to the formation of a ground-state charge-transfer complex and an inner filter effect, which also contributed to the special selectivity of the sensor among the various nitroaromatic analogues. Compared with previous reports, L can serve as a highly efficient sensor for the sensing of TNP and can be employed over a wide pH range of 2 to 12. Sensor L was effectively used to quantify TNP in real water and soil samples. Staphylococcus aureus has become a significant cause of health risks in humankind. Staphylococcal superantigens (SAgs) or enterotoxins are the key virulent factors that can exhibit acute diseases to severe life-threatening conditions. Recent literature reports S. aureus has steadily gained new enterotoxin genes over the past few decades. In spite of current knowledge of the established SAgs, several questions on putative enterotoxins are still remaining unanswered. Keeping that in mind, this study sheds light on a putative enterotoxin SEl26 to characterize its structural and functional properties. In-silico analyses indicate its close relation with the conventional SAgs, especially the zinc-binding SAgs. Additionally, important residues that are vital for the T-cell receptor (TcR) and major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) interaction were predicted and compared with established SAgs. It is essential to use environment-friendly, non-toxic, biodegradable and sustainable materials for various applications. Biopolymers are derived from renewable sources like plants, microorganisms, and agricultural wastes. Unlike conventional polymers, biopolymer has a lower carbon footprint and contributes less to greenhouse gas emission. All biopolymers are biodegradable, meaning natural processes can break them down into harmless products such as water and biomass. This property is of utmost importance for various sustainable applications. This review discusses different classifications of biopolymers based on origin, including plant-based, animal-based and micro-organism-based biopolymers. The review also discusses the desirable properties that are required in materials for their use as packaging material. It also discusses the different processes used in modifying the biopolymer to improve its properties. Finally, this review shows the recent developments taking place in using specifically animal origin-based biopolymer and its use in packaging material. It was observed that animal-origin-based biopolymers, although they possess unique properties however, are less explored than plant-origin biopolymers. The animal-origin-based biopolymers covered in this review are chitosan, gelatin, collagen, keratin, casein, whey, hyaluronic acid and silk fibroin. This review will help in renewing research interest in animal-origin biopolymers. In summary, biopolymer offers a sustainable and environment-friendly alternative to conventional polymers. Aluminum (Al), a non-essential metal for plant growth, exerts significant phytotoxic effects, particularly on root growth. Anthropogenic activities would intensify Al's toxic effects by releasing Al 3+ into the soil solution, especially in acidic soils with a pH lower than 5.5 and rich mineral content. The severity of Al-induced phytotoxicity varies based on factors such as Al concentration, ionic form, plant species, and growth stages. Al toxicity leads to inhibited root and shoot growth, reduced plant biomass, disrupted water uptake causing nutritional imbalance, and adverse alterations in physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes. These effects collectively lead to diminished plant yield and quality, along with reduced soil fertility. Plants employ various mechanisms to counter Al toxicity under stress conditions, including sequestering Al in vacuoles, exuding organic acids (OAs) like citrate, oxalate, and malate from root tip cells to form Al-complexes, activating antioxidative enzymes, and overexpressing Al-stress regulatory genes. Recent advancements focus on enhancing the exudation of OAs to prevent Al from entering the plant, and developing Al-tolerant varieties. Gene transporter families, such as ATP-Binding Cassette (ABC), Aluminum-activated Malate Transporter (ALMT), Natural resistance-associated macrophage protein (Nramp), Multidrug and Toxic compounds Extrusion (MATE), and aquaporin, play a crucial role in regulating Al toxicity. This comprehensive review examined recent progress in understanding the cytotoxic impact of Al on plants at the cellular and molecular levels. Diverse strategies developed by both plants and scientists to mitigate Al-induced phytotoxicity were discussed. Background: Copper (Cu), an essential trace mineral regulating multiple actions of inflammation and oxidative stress, has been implicated in risk for preterm birth (PTB)., Objectives: This study aimed to determine the association of maternal Cu concentration during pregnancy with PTB risk and gestational duration in a large multicohort study including diverse populations., Methods: Maternal plasma or serum samples of 10,449 singleton live births were obtained from 18 geographically diverse study cohorts. Maternal Cu concentrations were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The associations of maternal Cu with PTB and gestational duration were analyzed using logistic and linear regressions for each cohort. The estimates were then combined using meta-analysis. Associations between maternal Cu and acute-phase reactants (APRs) and infection status were analyzed in 1239 samples from the Malawi cohort., Results: The maternal prenatal Cu concentration in our study samples followed normal distribution with mean of 1.92 μg/mL and standard deviation of 0.43 μg/mL, and Cu concentrations increased with gestational age up to 20 wk. The random-effect meta-analysis across 18 cohorts revealed that 1 μg/mL increase in maternal Cu concentration was associated with higher risk of PTB with odds ratio of 1.30 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08, 1.57) and shorter gestational duration of 1.64 d (95% CI: 0.56, 2.73). In the Malawi cohort, higher maternal Cu concentration, concentrations of multiple APRs, and infections (malaria and HIV) were correlated and associated with greater risk of PTB and shorter gestational duration., Conclusions: Our study supports robust negative association between maternal Cu and gestational duration and positive association with risk for PTB. Cu concentration was strongly correlated with APRs and infection status suggesting its potential role in inflammation, a pathway implicated in the mechanisms of PTB. King grass has been recognized as a potential phytoremediation plant species due to its high biomass and resistance to heavy metals (HMs). However, the possible impacts of cadmium (Cd) contamination on rhizocompartments' microbial activities in association with king grass have not been extensively explored. The utilization of 16S rRNA gene and ITS sequencing was carried out to examine alterations in the bacterial and fungal communities in the rhizosphere and rhizoplane of king grass in response to low and high Cd stress. Results demonstrated that both bacterial and fungal communities' diversity and richness were negatively impacted by Cd stress, regardless of its concentration. However, evenness did not exhibit any significant response to either of the concentrations. Additionally, nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination demonstrated a significant difference (p < 0.001) in microbial communities under different treatments. The abundance of bacterial taxa such as Steroibacter, Nitrospira, Pseudoxanthomonas, Cellvirio, Phenylobacterium, Mycobacterium, Pirellula and Aquicella was adversely affected under Cd stress while Flavobacterium, Gemmata, Thiobacillus and Gemmatimonas showed no prominent response, indicating their resistance to Cd stress. Like that, certain fungal taxa for instance, Cladosporium, Cercophora, Acremonium, Mortierella, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Glomus and Sebacina were also highly reduced by low and high Cd stress. In contrast, Fusarium, Thanatephorus, Botrytis and Curvularia did not show any response to Cd stress.
