Summary: Background: Augmentation mammoplasty with subpectoral prosthesis implantation is a frequent performed procedure in plastic surgery for reconstructive and aesthetic purposes. Although prosthesis implantation in a pocket under the major pectoralis muscle has been related to volumetric and functional alterations, there is not much information about the associated short- and long-term histological changes. Therefore, the aim of our study was to describe the acute and chronic histological muscle alterations associated with subpectoral prosthesis implantation. Materials and Method: We collected samples from patients with breast tissue expander (1 year after implantation) and from patients without implantation as a control group. The samples were processed for assessing their histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical properties. Results: In the control group, no relevant histological findings were identified. Additionally, in the patients with expander, we observed mild augmentation of the internalised nuclei, normal morphology, significant muscle atrophy and fibrosis, whereas in the patients with prosthesis considerable augmentation of internalised nuclei, significant muscle atrophy, fibrosis and alteration of normal muscle morphology were observed. Conclusion: Prosthesis implantation induces histological changes in the periprosthetic striated muscle. Chronic fibrosis and inflammation play key roles in this process, which should be characterised in more detail from the histological and molecular biological perspective.

Zn–Mn alloy coatings with small amounts of Mn (Zn-0.19 wt.% Mn, Zn-0.21 wt.% Mn, Zn-0.26 wt.% Mn and Zn-0.34 wt.% Mn) were formed by electrodeposition, onto pre-treated Mg substrates (Mgt) covered with a Zn film (Zn/Mgt). The chemical composition in depth profiles, morphological and structural characteristics of the Zn–Mn coatings on Zn/Mgt (labeled as Zn–Mn/(Zn/Mgt)) were analyzed using Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GD-OES), Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). When the manganese content was greater than 0.19 wt.%, the results reveal the formation of two Zn–Mn phases: η-ZnMn and ζ-MnZn13; while the formation of the ζ-MnZn13 phase was favored by increasing the Mn content in the alloy. On the other hand, microhardness, wear resistance, and coefficient of friction significantly increase when coating Zn/Mgt substrate with the Zn–Mn alloy. The corrosion performance of this alloy was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The degradation rate in Hank's solutions of the pristine Mg substrate (0.29 mm yr−1) decreases due to the Zn–Mn coating. Furthermore, the degradation rate of Zn–Mn was further decreased from 0.051 to 0.022 mm yr−1, by varying the amount of Mn in the Zn–Mn alloy from 0.19 to 0.26 wt.% Mn, respectively. However, the rate of degradation increases up to 0.064 mm yr−1 at higher Mn content, Zn-0.34 wt.% Mn. Therefore, the microhardness, wear volume, and degradation rate of Zn–Mn/(Zn/Mg) in Hank's solution can be modulated by varying the Mn composition in the alloy.

Restoration of mining sites is essential to ensure ecosystem services and biodiversity. One restoration strategy employed in arid and semi-arid zones is the use of organic amendments to establishment technosols. However, it is necessary to monitor the restoration progress in order to select appropriate amendments. This study monitored the effects of compost gardening, greenhouse horticulture and stabilized sewage sludge, and their blends. We focused on soil physical and chemical indicators and bacterial community structure and diversity during the 30 months after application. Organic amendments increased total organic carbon and nitrogen within six months, staying elevated compared to natural soils over 30 months. Electrical conductivity rose then stabilized, the pH slightly decreased but stayed alkaline, and water holding capacity improved in treated technosols. Bacterial diversity increased in amended technosols compared to control. Alpha diversity varied with treatment and time, peaking at 18 months. Technosols with plant compost showed reduced bacterial richness at 30 months, while those with sewage sludge and its mixtures maintained it. The bacterial community analysis showed significant differences among treatments and times, highlighting dominant phyla like Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. PCoA analysis showed clear separation of bacterial communities from treated, natural, and control soils, with notable differences between plant and sludge treatments. Soil variables such as TOC, TN, EC and water holding capacity explained more than 82 % of the variation in bacterial communities. Eighty-three indicator taxa were identified that explained the differences between the microbial communities of treated and untreated soils, highlighting the importance of taxa such as Pelagibacterium spp., Roseivirga spp. and Cellvibrio spp. in preserving soil health. Intensive farming offers a potential solution to feed the growing population due to its high productivity. Conventional management (CO) based on inorganic fertilization practices degrades soil quality, but restorative practices including ecological intensification (EI) and organic management results in maintaining soil quality without compromising productivity. In this paper, two different management systems were evaluated: CO, based on inorganic fertilization, and EI, focused on providing organic nutrients to soils to support crops. EI increased soil fertility, together with higher alpha diversity indices, more differentially abundant amplicon sequence variant (ASVs) (247 EI vs. 165 CO) and indicator taxa (60 EI vs. 32 CO). Distinct bacterial taxa were associated with the different management systems, revealing their roles in soil processes and nutrient availability. In the CO treatment, indicator genera such as Nitrospira and Desulfarculaceae were linked to N fertilization and nitrite oxidation, while RB41 was associated with phosphorus availability. Ammoniphilus, PAUC26f, and BSV26 were also indicators of CO management. Conversely, EI treatment promoted bacteria involved in organic matter decomposition and nutrient cycling, such as Halomonas, Chryseolinea and Rhodobacteraceae. Gemmatimonas, Steroidobacter, Altererythrobacter, Acidibacter and Anseongella contribute to carbon and nitrogen cycling. Burkholderiaceae and Rhodopirellula play roles in phosphate solubilization and organic P mineralization, respectively. Numerous taxa with plant growth-promoting (PGP) attributes, such as BIrii41, Pseudomonas, and Lysobacter, were also identified as indicators of the EI treatment. EI associated bacteria were positively correlated with soil organic carbon contents, nitrates, and exchangeable bases, while negatively correlated with CO bacteria. A distance-based multivariate multiple regression (DistLM) demonstrated a strong relationship (r 2  = 0.78) between soil physicochemical variables and bacterial community structure, with SOC explaining the most variations in the model. Other significant parameters included potassium (K), electrical conductivity (EC), and nitrates. Objectives: To measure the influence of scanning pattern on the accuracy, time, and number of photograms of complete-arch intraoral implant scans., Methods: A maxillary edentulous patient with 7 implants was selected. The reference implant cast was obtained using conventional methods (7Series Scanner). Four groups were created based on the scanning pattern used to acquire the complete-arch implant scans by using an intraoral scanner (IOS) (Trios4): manufacturer's recommended (Occlusal-Buccal-Lingual (OBL)), zig-zag (Zig-zag), circumferential (Circumf), and novel pattern that included locking an initial occlusal scan (O-Lock group) (n = 15). Scanning time and number of photograms were recorded. The linear and angular measurements were used to assess scanning accuracy. One-way ANOVA and Tukey tests were used to analyze trueness, scanning time, and number of photograms. The Levene test was selected to assess precision (α=0.05)., Results: Statistically significant differences in trueness were detected among OBL, Zig-zag, Circumf, and O-Lock regarding linear discrepancy (P<0.01), angular discrepancy (P<0.01), scanning time (P<0.01), and number of photograms (P<0.01). The O-Lock (63 ± 20 µm) showed the best linear trueness with statistically significant differences (P < 0.01) with Circumferential (86 ± 16 µm) and OBL (87 ± 19 µm) groups. The O-Lock (93.5 ± 13.4 s, 1080 ± 104 photograms) and Circumf groups (102.9 ± 15.1 s, 1112 ± 179 photograms) obtained lower scanning times (P < 0.01) and number of photograms (P < 0.01) than OBL (130.3 ± 19.4 s, 1293 ± 161 photograms) and Zig-zag (125.7 ± 22.1 s, 1316 ± 160 photograms) groups., Conclusions: The scanning patterns tested influenced scanning accuracy, time, and number of photograms of the complete-arch scans obtained by using the IOS tested. The composition and functioning of soil bacterial communities, as well as their responses to multiple perturbations, are not well understood in the terrestrial ecosystems. Our study focuses on the bacterial community of erosive and poorly developed soils (Haplic Leptosols) in Mediterranean rangelands of Extremadura (W Spain) with different grazing intensities. Leptosols from similar natural conditions were selected and sampled at two depths to determine the soil properties as well as the structure and activity of bacterial communities. As grazing intensified, the soil C and N content increased, as did the number and diversity of bacteria, mainly of fast-growing lineages. Aridibacter, Acidobacteria Gp6 and Gp10, Gemmatimonas, and Segetibacter increased their abundance along the grazing-intensity gradient. Firmicutes such as Romboutsia and Turicibacter from livestock microbiome also increased. In functional terms, the KEGG pathways enriched in the soils with moderate and high grazing intensity were ABC transporters, DNA repair and recombination proteins, the two-component system, and the degradation of xenobiotics. All of these proved to be related to stronger cell division and response mechanisms to environmental stressors such as drought, warming, toxic substances, and nutrient deprivation. Consequently, the bacterial community was affected by grazing, but appeared to adapt and counteract the effects of a high grazing intensity. Hepatotoxicity poses a significant concern in drug design due to the potential liver damage that can be caused by new drugs. Among common manifestations of hepatotoxic damage is lipid accumulation in hepatic tissue, resulting in liver steatosis or phospholipidosis. Carboxylic derivatives are prone to interfere with fatty acid metabolism and cause lipid accumulation in hepatocytes. This study investigates the toxic behaviour of 24 structurally related carboxylic acids in hepatocytes, specifically their ability to cause accumulation of fatty acids and phospholipids. Using high-content screening (HCS) assays, we identified two distinct lipid accumulation patterns. Subsequently, we developed structure-activity relationship (SAR) and quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models to determine relevant molecular substructures and descriptors contributing to these adverse effects. Additionally, we calculated physicochemical properties associated with lipid accumulation in hepatocytes and examined their correlation with our chemical structure characteristics. To assess the applicability of our findings to a wide range of chemical compounds, we employed two external datasets to evaluate the distribution of our QSAR descriptors. Our study highlights the significance of subtle molecular structural variations in triggering hepatotoxicity, such as the presence of nitrogen or the specific arrangement of substitutions within the carbon chain. Intensive agriculture relies on external inputs to reach high productivity and profitability. Plastic mulch, mainly in the form of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE), is widely used in agriculture to decrease evaporation, increase soil temperature and prevent weeds. The incomplete removal of LDPE mulch after use causes plastic contamination in agricultural soils. In conventional agriculture, the use of pesticides also leaves residues accumulating in soils. Thus, the objective of this study was to measure plastic and pesticide residues in agricultural soils and their effects on the soil microbiome. For this, we sampled soil (0-10 cm and 10-30 cm) from 18 parcels from 6 vegetable farms in SE Spain. The farms were under either organic or conventional management, where plastic mulch had been used for >25 years. We measured the macro- and micro-light density plastic debris contents, the pesticide residue levels, and a range of physiochemical properties. We also carried out DNA sequencing on the soil fungal and bacterial communities. Plastic debris (>100 μm) was found in all samples with an average number of 2 × 10 3  particles kg -1 and area of 60 cm 2  kg -1 . We found 4-10 different pesticide residues in all conventional soils, for an average of 140 μg kg -1 . Overall, pesticide content was ∼100 times lower in organic farms. The soil microbiomes were farm-specific and related to different soil physicochemical parameters and contaminants. Regarding contaminants, bacterial communities responded to the total pesticide residues, the fungicide Azoxystrobin and the insecticide Chlorantraniliprole as well as the plastic area. The fungicide Boscalid was the only contaminant to influence the fungal community. The wide spread of plastic and pesticide residues in agricultural soil and their effects on soil microbial communities may impact crop production and other environmental services. Chemical elements, especially metals, play very specific roles in the life sciences. The implementation of correlative imaging methods, of elements on the one hand and of molecules or biological structures on the other hand, is the subject of recent developments. The most commonly used spectro-imaging techniques for metals are synchrotron-induced X-ray fluorescence, mass spectrometry and fluorescence imaging of metal molecular sensors. These imaging methods can be correlated with a wide variety of other analytical techniques used for structural imaging (e.g., electron microscopy), small molecule imaging (e.g., molecular mass spectrometry) or protein imaging (e.g., fluorescence microscopy). The resulting correlative imaging is developed at different scales, from biological tissue to the subcellular level. Objectives: To evaluate the influence of the dental arch and cutting-off and rescanning procedures on the accuracy of complete-arch implant scans in partially edentulous arches., Material and Methods: A maxillary and a mandibular partially edentulous typodont with implant abutment analogs placed in the right and left first molar and right central incisor sites were digitized to create reference models by using an industrial optical scanner (7 Series Desktop Scanner; Dentalwings). Two experimental groups were scanned using an intraoral scanner (IOS) (TRIOS 4; 3Shape A/S): the Maxillary group (Mx) and the Mandibular group (Mb). Four subgroups were generated depending on the number of rescanned mesh holes: No holes (Mx-G0, Mb-G0), 1 hole (Mx-G1, Mb-G1), 2 holes (Mx-G2, Mb-G2) and 3 holes (Mx-G3, Mb-G3). A 3-dimensional metrology software (Geomagic Control X; 3D Systems) was used to measure the difference between the reference and the experimental scans computing the root mean square (RMS) error calculation. Two-way ANOVA and a post-hoc Tukey test were used to analyze the trueness data (α=0.05). Levene test was used to evaluate the prevision (α=0.05)., Results: The Mx group obtained a trueness mean value of 54 ± 17 µm and a mean precision value of 54 ± 17 µm, while the Mb group presented a trueness mean value of 67 ± 23 µm and a mean precision value of 66 ± 22 µm. The Mx group demonstrated significantly better trueness than the Mb group (P<.001). The G0 and G1 subgroups had the highest trueness values among the subgroups tested. No significant difference was observed between G0 and G1, G1 and G2, and G2 and G3 subgroups in trueness and precision. However, the G0 had significantly better trueness and precision values compared to G2 and G3 subgroups. In addition, the G1 had significantly better trueness values than the G3 subgroup. However, the Levene test revealed no difference in the precision mean values among the subgroups tested., Conclusions: Implant scanning trueness was affected by the dental arch and the number of rescanned mesh holes using the IOS tested. A higher number of rescanned mesh holes decreased the scanning trueness. The stitching algorithm of the IOS software tested after the mesh hole scan demonstrated a significant error, especially when multiples mesh holes are involved in the same arch., Clinical Significance: Given that cutting-off and rescanning techniques can reduce trueness, clinicians should consider whether these techniques are necessary in complete digital workflows. Objective: To assess the current level of routine use of psychosocial-related patient-reported outcome measurements (PROMs) in physical therapy practice and which physical therapist-level factors are associated with the use of these measurement instruments., Methods: We conducted an online survey study among Spanish physical therapists involved in the treatment of LBP patients in Public Health Service, Mutual Insurance Companies, and private practice during 2020. Descriptive analyses were conducted for reporting the number and instruments utilized. Thus, sociodemographic and professional features differences between PTs using and not using PROM were analyzed., Results: From 485 physiotherapists completing the questionnaire nationwide, 484 were included. A minority of therapists routinely used psychosocial-related PROMs (13.8%) in LBP patients and only 6.8% did so through standardized measurements instruments. The Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (28.8%) and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (15.1%) were used most frequently. Physiotherapists working in Andalucía and País Vasco regions, in private practice environments, educated in psychosocial factors evaluation and management, considering psychosocial factors during the clinical practice and expecting patients' collaborative attitudes demonstrated significantly greater use of PROMS (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: This study showed that the majority of physiotherapists in Spain do not use PROMs for evaluating LBP (86.2%). From those physiotherapists using PROMs, approximately the half use validated instruments such as the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia or the Pain Catastrophizing Scale while the other half limit their evaluation to anamnesis and non-validated questionnaires. The escape behaviour, measured as flight initiation distance (FID; the distance at which individuals take flight when approached by a potential predator, usually a human in the study systems), is a measure widely used to study fearfulness and risk-taking in animals. Previous studies have shown significant differences in the escape behaviour of birds inhabiting cemeteries and urban parks in European cities, where birds seem to be shyer in the latter. We collected a regional dataset of the FID of birds inhabiting cemeteries and parks across Latin America in peri-urban, suburban and urban parks and cemeteries. FIDs were recorded for eighty-one bird species. Mean species-specific FIDs ranged from 1.9 to 19.7 m for species with at least two observations (fifty-seven species). Using Bayesian regression modelling and controlling for the phylogenetic relatedness of the FID among bird species and city and country, we found that, in contrast to a recent publication from Europe, birds escape earlier in cemeteries than parks in the studied Latin American cities. FIDs were also significantly shorter in urban areas than in peri-urban areas and in areas with higher human density. Our results indicate that some idiosyncratic patterns in animal fearfulness towards humans may emerge among different geographic regions, highlighting difficulties with scaling up and application of regional findings to other ecosystems and world regions. Soils of Mediterranean forests can be severely degraded due to wildfire. However, post-fire management techniques, such as soil mulching with vegetal residues, can limit degradation and increase functionality of burned soils. The effects of post-fire mulching on soil functionality have been little studied in Mediterranean forests, and it is still unclear whether the application of straw or wood residues is beneficial. This study explores the changes in important soil chemical and biochemical properties in a pine forest of Central Eastern Spain after a wildfire and post-fire mulching with straw or wood chips. Only basal soil respiration (BSR), dehydrogenase activity (DHA), pH and water field capacity (WFC) significantly changed after the fire and mulching. In contrast, the other enzymatic activities - urease (UA), alkaline phosphatase (Alk-PA) and β-glucosidase (BGA), - total organic carbon (TOC) and electrical conductivity (EC) were not influenced by these soil disturbances. Time from fire and soil conditions (due to burning and management) were significant variability factors for BSR, pH, BGA, UA, TOC, EC. Mulching increased BSR compared to burned areas, especially in soils with straw (+30 %), thanks to addition of fresh organic residues, quickly incorporated in the soil. Soil pH showed a low variability among the four soil conditions, and TOC was higher in mulched soils (on average + 20 % compared to the burned soils), and this was correlated to the increased BSR. The role of mulching was essential with reference to WFC, as the post-fire management limited its reduction after the fire (on average from -30 % to -20 %). Finally, the Principal Component Analysis coupled to the Analytical Hierarchical Cluster Analysis confirmed the significant influence of the post-fire management on some enzymatic activities, although a sharp discrimination among the four soil conditions was only evident between unburned and burned sites, regardless of the management. Dysregulation of the splicing machinery is emerging as a hallmark in cancer due to its association with multiple dysfunctions in tumor cells. Inappropriate function of this machinery can generate tumor-driving splicing variants and trigger oncogenic actions. However, its role in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) is poorly defined. In this study we aimed to characterize the expression pattern of a set of splicing machinery components in PanNETs, and their relationship with aggressiveness features. A qPCR-based array was first deployed to determine the expression levels of components of the major (n = 13) and minor spliceosome (n = 4) and associated splicing factors (n = 27), using a microfluidic technology in 20 PanNETs and non-tumoral adjacent samples. Subsequently, in vivo and in vitro models were applied to explore the pathophysiological role of NOVA1. Expression analysis revealed that a substantial proportion of splicing machinery components was altered in tumors. Notably, key splicing factors were overexpressed in PanNETs samples, wherein their levels correlated with clinical and malignancy features. Using in vivo and in vitro assays, we demonstrate that one of those altered factors, NOVA1, is tightly related to cell proliferation, alters pivotal signaling pathways and interferes with responsiveness to drug treatment in PanNETs, suggesting a role for this factor in the aggressiveness of these tumors and its suitability as therapeutic target. Altogether, our results unveil a severe alteration of the splicing machinery in PanNETs and identify the putative relevance of NOVA1 in tumor development/progression, which could provide novel avenues to develop diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic tools for this pathology., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Objectives: To assess the influence of implant angulation, humidity, and interimplant distance on the accuracy and scanning time of complete-arch implant scans., Methods: A definitive cast with 4 parallel implant abutment analogs (P group), and another cast with 4 angulated (up to 30 degrees) implant abutment analogs (NP group) were digitized by using a scanner (7Series) (reference scans). Two subgroups were created: dry (D subgroup) and wet (W subgroup). For the D subgroup, the casts were digitized without altering the surface humidity by using an intraoral scanner (IOS) (TRIOS 3). For the W subgroup, the cast surface was humidified with artificial saliva and digitized by using the same IOS. The interimplant distance discrepancies were assessed by computing linear and angular measurements. Trueness data was analyzed using 3-way ANOVA followed by the pairwise comparison Tukey tests. The Bartlett test, followed by the pairwise comparison tests, was used to assess the precision (α=.05)., Results: Regarding the trueness, implant angulation (P<.001) and inter-implant distance measurement (P<.001) influenced the linear discrepancies. Implant angulation (P=.002), humidity conditions (P<.001), and inter-implant distance (P=.001) influenced the angular discrepancies. Regarding the precision, significant differences in the variance of linear and angular measurements and inter-implant distances were found. Humidity conditions (P<.001) influenced the scanning time., Conclusions: Implant angulation, humidity, and interimplant distance influenced the accuracy and scanning time of complete-arch implant scans. Parallel implants resulted in higher trueness and precision values. Purpose: To assess the influence of the scan body geometry bevel location and implant angulation and position of complete-arch implant digital scans., Material and Methods: Two definitive casts with 4 implant analogs placed parallel (P group) or angulated up to 30° (NP group) were fabricated. Five subgroups were created based on the scan body geometry bevel position: facial, mesial, distal, lingual, or random (F, M, D, L, and R subgroup). Casts were digitized using a laboratory scanner (reference) (7Series Desktop Scanner) and an intraoral scanner (TRIOS 3). The implant position discrepancies between the reference and experimental scans were calculated. Data was analyzed using 3-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = .05)., Results: The scan body geometry bevel position (P < .001) and the inter-implant distance (P < .001) were shown as significant predictors of the linear discrepancies obtained. The L subgroup had a significantly lower discrepancy compared with the other subgroups. Implant angulation (P < .001), the scan body geometry bevel position (P < .001), and the inter-implant distance (P < .001) were all significant predictors on the angular discrepancies obtained., Conclusions: The scan body geometry bevel location and implant angulation and position influenced the accuracy of the IOS tested. The lingual orientation obtained significantly better accuracy values compared with the other positions. The parallel implant analog position obtained better accuracy than the angulated positions. Background: Ultrasound imaging (US) has shown to be a reliable and valid tool for assessing muscle morphology and quality. However, most studies have focused on asymptomatic populations., Objective: To investigate intra- and inter-rater reliability estimates of muscle morphology and quality of cervical multifidus (CM) and short rotators (SR) in patients with whiplash associated disorders (WAD)., Design: An intra- and inter-examiner reliability study., Methods: US images were acquired in a blinded fashion in 34 patients (35% males) by two experienced and two novice examiners. Cross-sectional area (CSA), perimeter, mean echo-intensity (EI) and the percentage of fatty infiltration were assessed twice, one-week apart, in a randomized order. Reliability estimates (i.e., intra-class correlation coefficients -ICC-, standard error of measurement -SEM-, minimal detectable change, mean of measurements, absolute and percent errors) were calculated., Results: Intra-examiner reliability for experienced assessors ranged from good to excellent for CM and SR (ICC 3,1  = 0.888-0.975 and 0.810-0.964 respectively) and from moderate-to-good for novices (ICC 3,1  = 0.708-0.790 and 0.655-0.796 respectively). The agreement between the experienced examiners was moderate to good (ICC 3,2  = 0.737-0.899 and 0.728-0.899 CM and SR respectively); between novice and experienced examiners was moderate to good (ICC 3,2  = 0.617-0.873 and 0.657-0.766 CM and SR respectively); and between novice examiners was moderate-to-good for CM (ICC 3,2  = 0.610-0.777) and moderate for SR (ICC 3,2  = 0.600-0.730)., Conclusion: CM and SR intra-examiner reliability was good-to-excellent for novice and experienced examiners. This study aims to evaluate the effects of technosols made with different organic amendments to restore degraded soils in a semiarid limestone quarry. The effects on soil quality, functionality and organic matter dynamics of the technosols amended with waste of gardening, greenhouse horticultural, stabilized sewage sludge and two mixtures of sludge with both vegetable composts were assessed. Several physical and chemical properties, humus fractions, soil respiration and molecular composition was performed after 6 and 18 months. Un-amended soils, and nearby natural undegraded soils served as reference. Amended technosols increased water retention capacity, electrical conductivity, total organic carbon and nitrogen, respect to not amended and natural soils. Humus fraction composition was not altered over time. Un-amended soils, very poor in organic matter, did not show any pyrolyzable compounds or labile soil organic matter by thermogravimetry. In contrast, the pyrochromatograms of natural soils showed lignocellulosic materials, polypeptides and a noticeable presence of alkylic compounds. In technosols with both types vegetable compost, the organic matter structure was more complex, showing compounds from lignin-derived and long-chain alkyl, polysaccharides, chlorophyll isoprenoids and nitrogen. In sludge technosol, a set of sterols was outstanding. The mixtures showed a molecular fingerprint of materials derived from the decomposition of the organic amendments that formed them. These signs of the contribution of different organic matter forms derived from the amendments were also reported by the series exothermic peaks found in the calorimetry. This short-term study indicates a clear effect of the amendments on the recovery of soil organic matter and presumably of its functionality. After the amendments application, microbial activity and soil respiration rates increased rapidly but ceased 18 months later. Applying organic amendments to recover physical, chemical, and biological qualities of soil may enable recovery of soils degraded by mining in semiarid climates. This study's aim was to investigate the development and changes in the composition of fungal communities in restored soils with five different types of organic amendments (two types of vegetable compost and sewage sludge compost, and a mixture of both) compared with unamended soils and surrounding natural soils and to examine the relationships between the fungal taxa, the new physico-chemical and biological soil properties of technosoils after 18 months of restoration, and natural soils. Restoration improved soil quality and fungal diversity, placing these soils in an intermediate position between unrestored soils (with no fungi present) and undisturbed reference soils, which were the most fungal diverse. Sewage-treated soils and their mixtures showed high nitrogen and carbohydrate content as well as high basal respiration and fatty acid content, suggesting that they provided readily biodegradable organic matter. In contrast, greenhouse compost-treated soils showed high total organic carbon and polyphenol content, whereas garden compost-treated soils showed intermediate values. The biological soil properties of both composts showed were similar to those of the reference soils, suggesting that composts contained more resilient organic matter. Organic amendments of dissimilar origin caused significantly different fungal soil communities at the genus level among the restored soils. Results indicated that soil pH, electrical conductivity, total nitrogen content, soil basal respiration, fungi/bacteria-PLFA ratio, and dehydrogenase and β-glucosidase activities, together with Pearson's correlations, revealed that these properties and nutrient content (total organic carbon, C/N ratio, carbohydrates, and polyphenols) influenced 40 soil fungal taxa. Introduction: This study examined the effect of popularity levels on friendship selection and friends' influence on popularity levels in early and mid-adolescence., Methods: Participants were 4205 Spanish adolescents (M age  = 13.1 years at Wave 1; 48% girls) belonging to 160 classrooms in two waves. Adolescents were asked about their friendships and the popularity of their classmates., Results: Longitudinal social network analyses showed that adolescents preferred similarly popular peers as friends. High popular classmates were more attractive as friends, particularly in early adolescence. Popular adolescents were more selective in their friendship nominations and adolescents with popular friends became more popular over time. These two effects were only significant in mid-adolescents, although comparative analyses showed a similar tendency at both age groups., Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of popularity levels in adolescents' friendship selection and suggests that popularity, at the individual and group level, plays a relevant role in social development. Biocrusts are an essential soil surface cover at drylands where ecosystems are especially fragile to soil degradation processes due to climatic peculiarities. In the present work, (micro)biological and physicochemical properties indicative of soil functionality were studied in two different biocrust types dominated by Dipolschistes diacapsis and Lepraria isidiata and in underlying soil at two different depths (SL1, soil layer right below the biocrusts, and SL2, soil layer underlying SL1) at the Tabernas desert (southeast Spain). The influence of climatic factors (rainfall and temperature) and general soil properties on the (micro)biological properties were also analyzed in different environmental (climatic) conditions over a period of two years. PERMANOVA analyses showed significant statistical differences (Pseudo-F = 63.9; P (perm) = 0.001) among biocrust and soil layers. Throughout the study period, enzyme activities involved in C, N, and P cycles; microbial biomass-C; basal respiration; and several properties directly related to ecosystem productivity (total organic carbon, total nitrogen, concentration of ammonium and nitrate) were higher in both biocrust types than in the underlying soil layers, showing that biocrusts improved soil functions related to nutrient cycling. These properties progressively diminished in successive soil layers under the biocrusts (biocrusts > SL1 > SL2). Biocrusts showed greater similarity to each other and to SL1 than to SL2 in (micro)biological properties. A distance-based linear model analysis showed that total organic carbon, rainfall, pH, mineralized N-NH 4 + , and total nitrogen were the most important variables for predicting (micro)biological soil properties in biocrusts. Different biochemical behavior between the biocrusts and successive underlying soil layers has been found in wet periods. After rainfall periods, the biocrusts showed important peaks in basal soil respiration and in enzyme activities involved in C and P cycles. Nevertheless, soil biochemical properties hardly showed any peak in SL1 and did not change in SL2 despite soil moisture being higher in the soil layers below the biocrusts. Correlation analyses corroborated the existence of different relationships between soil moisture and enzymatic activities. In biocrusts, soil moisture showed a greater number of significant positive correlations with enzymes such as β-glucosidase, invertase, and phosphomonoesterase among others, whereas in SL1 it was only correlated with cellulase and in SL2 with dehydrogenase. Racial tensions continue to ignite social unrest in the United States. Structural racism is increasingly recognized as a public health issue. It is therefore necessary to continue addressing the interaction of race and medicine, including anesthesiology. While many may overlook the impact that racial discrimination has had on the development of anesthesiology, understanding pain through a racialized lens has always been entwined with this medical specialty since its origins. Considering the first public demonstration of ether anesthesia in 1846 occurred 15 years before the American Civil War (1861-1865), it is naïve to pretend that anesthesia has been insulated from racial prejudice. We increasingly recognize the effects of variables, such as housing and education, which are important as social determinants of health. Across ethnic and racial lines, statistically significant differences persist in pain assessment and analgesia delivery. To understand these irregularities without relying on unsupported theories, we must challenge our current understanding of race in medicine. By reviewing the history of anesthesia through a racialized lens, we may better explore our biases and develop strategies towards racially equitable care. The selection of a suitable organic amendment for recovery of semi-arid soils degraded by mining is key to the success of an ecological restoration. The aim of this research is to study the short-term responses of physicochemical, biochemical and biological properties, as well as the changes of a soil bacterial community at the genus level after application of five types of organic amendments in a limestone quarry in Almería (SE, Spain). The relationship among bacterial taxa with biochemical and physicochemical properties and priming effect from restored soils was also analysed. Six months after the application of organic amendments, the values of different soil status, such as total organic carbon, total nitrogen, assimilable phosphorus and labile organic matter forms (carbohydrates and polyphenols), basal respiration (BR) and enzymatic activities increased significantly with respect to unrestored soils. Similarly, a positive priming effect of soil organic matter mineralisation was produced by all organic amendments, being significantly higher (p < 0.05) in sewage sludge-treated soils. Bacterial diversity was higher in restored than in control soils. The restoration caused changes in soil bacterial communities' composition at the phylum and genus levels. It was observed that soil bacterial communities were significantly related to several physical, chemical and biochemical soil properties, establishing two different co-occurrence patterns between restored and unrestored soils. A first bacterial co-occurrence pattern showed significant positive correlations to pH and C/N ratio and negativity with the rest of the soil properties. The second bacterial pattern was positively correlated with carbohydrates, μg of C, priming effect, BR, β-glucosidase and phosphatase and negatively with pH and C/N ratio. It was concluded that soil bacterial communities are clearly influenced by the types of organic amendments applied. Infection with Toxoplasma gondii in humans has usually been related to the consumption of raw, undercooked or cured meat. Our study is based on the detection of T. gondii in cured legs and shoulders made from 100% Iberian sows fed mainly with acorn and raised as outdoor livestock in Aracena (Spain), which having been elaborated following a specific curing process (time period and location). An outdoor farm with a total of 636 animals was studied, showing a seroprevalence of 10% for the parasite T. gondii. Twenty individuals were chosen to be experimentally infected and slaughtered 60 days post-infection. Their legs and shoulders were processed to make 100% Iberian ham legs and shoulders. The meat ready to be eaten was analyzed by quantification and viability assays using magnetic capture real-time qPCR and bioassay techniques proving that this specific traditional "Cinco Jotas" curing process 100% Iberian ham is strong enough to eliminate the parasite T. gondii, resulting in a safe product for consumers., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. In this study we focused on urban bird diversity across Mexico, a megadiverse country, with a special focus on the relative role of urban greenspaces and heavily-built sites. We considered a country-wide approach, including 24 different sized Mexican cities. Our aims were to describe the urban bird diversity in focal cities and further assess the relationships between it and the biogeographic region where cities are located, their size, elevation, and annual rainfall. Additionally, we evaluated differences in the functional composition of bird communities in both studied urban scenarios (i.e., urban greenspaces, heavily-built sites). Our results confirm that urban greenspaces are home to a large proportion of species when contrasted with heavily-built sites. While total species richness and species richness of greenspaces were related with the cities' biogeographic region -with higher species richness in the Neotropical region and Transition Zone-, the relationship did not hold true in heavily-built sites. We found that annual rainfall was negatively related to bird richness in heavily-built sites, suggesting that species from arid systems can be more tolerant to urbanization. Regarding the bird functional group assessment, results show a clear differentiation between the functional groups of greenspaces and those of heavily-built sites, with granivores and omnivores associated with the latter and a highly diverse array of functional groups associated with urban greenspaces., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2020.
