Biofilms are multi-species bacterial communities with complex structures that create antibiotic resistance, cause life-threatening infections, thereby considerable economic loss; needed new approaches. Medicinal plants are focused as new alternatives for their therapeutic and antimicrobial effects. Our present study, Azadirachta indica, Moringa oleifera, Murraya koenigii, and Psidium guajava extracts were investigated against MRSA. The preliminary antimicrobial study showed pet. ether extract of A. indica and ethanolic extract of P. guajava showed a MIC value of 125 μg/mL and MBC value of 500 μg/mL. These extracts showed biofilm inhibition in the range of 60.0–83.9 % and did not possess any hemolytic activity to the human erythrocytes. The plant species investigated in this study had different degrees of antibiofilm activity against MRSA. However, we suggest that A. indica and P. guajava are promising candidates and further investigation is needed to isolate the antimicrobial compounds for the management of MRSA and its mechanism of activity.

A new ferrocene appended linear donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) type 1,8-naphthalimide chromophores [FcPhNap-n-butyl (1) and Fc(Ph) 2 Nap-n-butyl (2)] have been synthesized and characterized using various analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The chromophores 1 and 2 show the one-electron transfer process, which was examined through cyclic voltammetric (CV) method. The solvatochromic studies show red shift by increasing the solvent polarity from non-polar to polar for both the chromophores 1 and 2, due to the better stabilization of the more polarized excited state than the ground state in the polar solvent. The fluorescence studies show low fluorescence emission, which was enhanced by aggregation in THF/water mixture when the water ratio is increased upto 60%, due to the restricted intramolecular rotation (RIR) process in the aggregated state. Also, the quantum yield increases 3.4 (1) and 6.8 (2) times in the aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE) state than THF solution for both the chromophores [THF/AIEE = 0.05/0.17 for 1 and 0.03/0.22 for 2]. The second-order non-linear optical properties of the chromophores 1 and 2 were studied using Kurtz and Perry powder technique, chromophore 2 shows 1.2 times higher SHG efficiency than 1, owing to the presence of additional phenyl group in 2, which further supports the effective charge transfer process from donor to acceptor. Furthermore, optical and non-linear optical properties of chromophores 1 and 2 were analyzed by DFT/TD-DFT calculations using different functionals (B3LYP, long-range corrected CAM-B3LYP and LC-BLYP) with 6-31+G** level of theory. The B3LYP functional shows higher hyperpolarizability values [β 0  = 109.2 × 10 -30 esu (1), 299.7 × 10 -30 esu (2)], due to the overestimation of the dipole moment, polarizability and hyperpolarizabilities between the donor-π-acceptor systems in B3LYP-hybrid functional, which leads to incorrect long-range charge transfer., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Bacillus thuringiensis Cry and Vip proteins are highly effective at controlling agricultural pests and could be used in pyramided transgenic crops. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the Cry1Ah and Vip3Aa19 synergistic interaction has never been investigated at the molecular level in Yellow peach moth (YPM) Conogethes punctiferalis. Binding affinity and synergism of Cry1Ah and Vip3Aa19 proteins with ABC transporter subfamily C receptors ABCC1, ABCC2 and ABCC3 proteins from the midgut of YPM larva by using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and pull-down assays. Both assays revealed that Cry1Ah could interact with ABCC1, ABCC2, and ABCC3, whereas Vip3Aa19 only interacts with ABCC1 and ABCC3, but not with ABCC2. Hence, when compared to the Vip3Aa19 protein, Cry1Ah had a higher binding affinity for ABCC1, ABCC2, and ABCC3. Furthermore, competitive binding assay between Cry1Ah and Vip3Aa19 protein with ABC transporter subfamily C receptors resulted in the final eluted protein samples displaying vibrant blue bands of Cry1Ah and very faint bands of Vip3Aa19. Suggesting that Cry and Vip proteins could deliver a synergistic effect after cleaving the midgut proteases. The GOBP2 protein has a unique function in the yellow peach moth (Conogethes punctiferalis (Guenée)). Several general odorant-binding proteins (GOBPs) have been identified in various lepidopteran species, but the functional difference between GOBP1 and GOBP2 in recognition of host plant odorants is still unknown. The functions of GOBP1 and GOBP2 in the yellow peach moth were evaluated in this study by using the CRISPR-Cas9 system. The results revealed the importance of GOBP2 in the olfaction mechanism in the yellow peach moth. The perception of the GOBP1-knockout larvae toward feeding decreased but did not reach a significant level while knocking out the GOBP2 and GOBP1/2 genes resulted in huge differences. On the other hand, electroantennograms (EAGs) and wind tunnel tests showed that the sensitivity of GOBP2 knockout adults to odorants decreased more than that of GOBP1 knockout individuals. The results of STRING database text mining grabbed our attention in protein-protein interaction studies. In this research, we first proved the existence of physical interactions between GOBPs and chemosensory proteins (CSPs) through the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) methods. Interestingly, GOBP1 and GOBP2 could not interact with each other, but they could interact with CSPs. The interaction results indicated that GOBP2 could physically interact with CSP15, CSP5, and OBP17, whereas GOBP1 could bind only with CSP5 and CSP10, and its association constant (k a ) was also more substantial than that of GOBP1. Inclusion complexes of R-ketoprofen and S-ketoprofen enantiomers with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in aqueous solution were studied using various spectroscopic techniques such as Raman, FTIR, UV and fluorescence. The different relative intensities and characteristic band shifts of the two enantiomers from Raman spectra suggests different interaction when complexed with β-CD. Raman experiments revealed a noticeable diminishing of the CC vibration and ring deformation, which indicate the embedding of ketoprofen inside the β-CD cavity. It's revealed that distinct differences between R- and S-ketoprofen in the presence of β-CD at neutral pH. The stoichiometry ratio and binding constant of the inclusion complexes were calculated using Benesi-Hildebrand plot. Both enantiomers showed stoichiometry ratio of 1:1 inclusion complex with β-CD. The binding constant of R-ketoprofen (4088 M -1 ) is higher than S-ketoprofen (2547 M -1 ). These values indicated that β-CD formed inclusion complexes more preferentially with R-ketoprofen than S-ketoprofen. The behavior of the inclusion behavior of guanosine (GU) with beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in the liquid, solid and virtual state were investigated. The absorption and fluorescence spectral were used to determine the inclusion behavior in liquid state. FT-IR, NMR, TGA, DSC, PXRD and FESEM techniques were used to investigate the inclusion behavior in solid-state, meanwhile the virtual state studies are done by molecular docking. The solid inclusion complex (GU: β-CD) was prepared by using the co-precipitation method. The binding constant (K) of (GU: β-CD) was calculated by using Benesi-Hildebrand. Besides that, the 1:1 stoichiometric ratio of inclusion complex was confirmed by using the Benesi-Hildebrand plot and Job's plot of continuous variation method. The most preferable model of GU: β-CD that suggested via molecular docking studies was in good agreement with experimental results. The inclusion complex of GU: β-CD exerted its toxicity effects towards HepG2 cell lines based on the reduced number of cell viability and lowest IC 50 value compared to the GU and β-CD viability., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Phenoloxidase (PO) is a crucial enzyme in the Arthropods melanization process, in which synthesized melanin rapidly acts at the site of injury and infection. In this study, we observed significant changes in humoral and cellular responses after exposing susceptible and resistant strains to a sub-lethal concentration of Cry1Ah toxin. Based on STRING v 11.0 computational protein-protein interaction analysis, we selected seven immune genes namely Prophenoloxidase PPO1b, PP03, Serpin-3, Serpin-5, Beta-1,3-glucan recognition protein, Immulectin-3 and Serine protease SP105 reported in Asian corn borer. Quantitative real-time PCR gene expression studies showed Cry1Ah resistant strain had higher expression of PPO1b, PP03, Serpin-3, Beta-1,3-glucan recognition protein, Immulectin-3 and Serine protease SP105 genes in midgut and hemocyte samples. This study also investigated and found that the level of prophenoloxidation (proPO) activity in Cry1Ah resistant strains was significantly higher than susceptible strains. Cry1Ah toxin significantly increased the resistant strain's immune responses, the difference was observed through assays of bacterial agglutination and phagocytosis. Additionally, immune response induced by Cry1Ah toxin influences the microbiome composition associated with the host system. Conogethes pinicolalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a major pine pest, possesses a sensitive olfactory system to locate its host. Pheromone binding proteins (PBPs) and general odorant binding proteins (GOBPs) are two types of proteins involved in the process. In this work, we used phylogenetic analysis, gene expression, fluorescence competitive binding assay, and molecular docking to characterize PBPs and GOBPs in C. pinicolalis. The phylogenetic unrooted tree revealed the C. pinicolalis GOBPs and PBPs amino acid sequences showed very close relation with Conogethes punctiferalis (yellow peach moth). Meanwhile, both the PBPs and GOBPs were specifically expressed in the antennae. Binding affinities of PBPs and GOBPs to 19 volatile compounds were tested. PBP2 shows the strongest binding to E10-16: Ald with a K i value of 0.28/1.66 μM; GOBP1 to Z10-16:Ald with a K i value of 3.11/4.24 μM. Furthermore, molecular docking reveals potential active sites in PBP2 and GOBP1 to interact with most of the tested volatiles. Finally, we demonstrate that PBP2 and GOBP1 are the dominant genes in their respective families using several different assays. In conclusion, PBP2 and GOBP1 genes may play similar roles in detecting and transporting sex pheromones and host plant volatiles in C. pinicolalis., (Copyright © 2019. Published by Elsevier B.V.)

ZnO nanoparticles with flakes-like structures were synthesized by simple wet chemical route using triethanolamine as a mild base. The well distributed ZnO nanoflakes onto carbon nanoplates (ZnO/C) were prepared by wet impregnation method. The crystalline structure and purity of the synthesized samples was inspected using XRD. The shape, structural morphology and elemental composition analysis was studied using FESEM and EDS. The probable anticancer activity of the synthesized samples was studied through their activity on human breast cancer MCF7 cell line. Exposure of breast cancer cells to ZnO and ZnO/C resulted in a dose dependent loss of cell viability, and the characteristic apoptotic features such as early and late apoptosis by dual staining. The results exhibited an enhanced antioxidant activity in the ZnO/C treated cells. This present study demonstrated that the ZnO and ZnO/C can be suggested as compounds with potential activity to induce apoptosis probable anticancer activity agents., (Copyright © 2019. Inosine is a nucleoside that is formed when hypoxanthine is attached to a ribose ring (also known as a ribofuranose) via a β-N₉-glycosidic bond. Inosine is commonly found in tRNAs. Inosine (INS) has been used widely as an antiviral drug. The inclusion complex of INS with β-CDx in solution phase is studied by ground and excited state with UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. A binding constant and stoichiometric ratio between INS and β-CDx are calculated by BH equation. The lifetime and relative amplitude of INS is increases with increasing the concentrations of β-CDx, confirms the formation of inclusion complex in liquid state. The solid complexes are prepared by kneading method (KM) and co-precipitation method (CP). The solid complex is characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning colorimetry (DSC). Single crystals of 3 Hydroxy Pyridinium Tartrate Mono Hydrate (3HPTMH) was synthesised and successfully grown in mixed solvent of ethanol and water by slow evaporation technique at room temperature. 3HPTMH belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system with space group P212121. The lattice parameters of 3HPTMH are a=7.4597(2)Å, b=8.7012(3)Å, c=17.8786(5)Å, V=1160.47(6)Å(3), obtained by single crystal X ray diffraction studies. Hyperpolarizability and HOMO-LUMO analysis were performed for grown crystal using DFT calculations using Gaussian 03 software. Functional groups were identified by FT-IR studies. The lower cut-off wavelength of the 3HPTMH has been identified by UV-Vis study. The thermal behavior has been studied by thermal gravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis. Organic Nonlinear Optical (NLO) crystals of 4-fluorochalcone (4FC) were synthesized and grown by slow evaporation solution growth method. The grown crystals have been characterised by powder X-ray diffraction, factor group analysis, FTIR, FT-Raman, UV-Vis Spectroscopy, powder SHG and Vickers microhardness tests. Good quality yellow transparent single crystals of 4-bromochalcone (4BC) crystal have been synthesized and grown by slow evaporation solution growth method. The UV-Vis spectra was recorded for the grown crystal. The thermal behavior of the title crystal was studied. Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectral studies were performed for analyzing and assigning the vibrations and to identify the functional groups. The relative SHG efficiency of the material was investigated to explore the NLO characteristics for the first time in the literature. The SHG efficiency of the material is found to be 1.14 times greater than urea. Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental and industrial pollutant that affects various organs in human and experimental animals. Naringenin is a naturally occurring plant bioflavonoid found in citrus fruits, which has been reported to have a wide range of pharmacological properties. A body of evidence has accumulated implicating the free radical generation with subsequent oxidative stress in the biochemical and molecular mechanisms of cadmium toxicity. Since kidney is the critical target organ of chronic Cd toxicity, we carried out this study to investigate the effects of naringenin on Cd-induced toxicity in the kidney of rats. In experimental rats, oral administration of cadmium chloride (5mg/(kgday)) for 4 weeks significantly induced the renal damage which was evident from the increased levels of serum urea, uric acid, creatinine with a significant (p<0.05) decrease in creatinine clearance. Cadmium also significantly decreased the levels of urea, uric acid and creatinine in urine. A markedly increased levels of lipid peroxidation markers (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and lipid hydroperoxides) and protein carbonyl contents with significant (p<0.05) decrease in non-enzymatic antioxidants (total sulfhydryl groups, reduced glutathione, vitamin C and vitamin E) and enzymatic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase (GST)) as well as glutathione metabolizing enzymes (glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)) were also observed in cadmium-treated rats. Co-administration of naringenin (25 and 50mg/(kgday)) along with Cd resulted in a reversal of Cd-induced biochemical changes in kidney accompanied by a significant decrease in lipid peroxidation and an increase in the level of renal antioxidant defense system. The histopathological studies in the kidney of rats also showed that naringenin (50mg/(kgday)) markedly reduced the toxicity of Cd and preserved the normal histological architecture of the renal tissue. The present study suggest that the nephroprotective potential of naringenin in Cd toxicity might be due to its antioxidant and metal chelating properties, which could be useful for achieving optimum effects in Cd-induced renal damage.

Total genomic DNA isolated by concentrating seawater and mercury-resistant bacteria were hybridized with a mer probe to detect the presence of homologous DNA sequences in marine coastal waters of the Bay of Bengal, India. Coastal water extracts induced with mercury hybridized with the mer operon of transposon Tn501. Most of the mercury-resistant bacteria that volatilized mercury also contained homologous DNA sequences to the mer probe.
