Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis (CNP) is a common urology disease. Our previous research found Poria cocos polysaccharides (PPs) alleviated CNP and suggested the effect was related to gut bacteria. We investigated the crucial bacteria and their metabolites responsible for the anti-CNP effect to discover possible mechanisms. The results showed that after the fermentation of PPs by human fecal microbiota, Parabacteroides, Fusicatenibacter, and Parasutterella were significantly enriched. Haloperidol glucuronide and 7-ketodeoxycholic acid generated by these bacteria could be responsible for the increased expression of Alox15 and Pla2g2f and the reduced expression of Cyp1a1 and Hsd17b7 in colon epithelium. The ratio of dihydrotestosterone to estradiol in serum was regulated, and CNP was alleviated. Our results suggested that Parabacteroides, Fusicatenibacter, and Parasutterella could be the essential bacteria in CNP alleviation and their metabolites of PPs 7-ketodeoxycholic acid and haloperidol glucuronide could be the signal molecules of the "gut-prostate axis"., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. This study evaluates the feasibility of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy combined with chemometrics as a fast and efficient technique to predict the polysaccharide content and antioxidant activity of Poria cocos. The reference values of polysaccharide content were determined by the phenol-sulfuric acid method, and the antioxidant activities were determined by the DPPH scavenge assay, FRAP scavenge assay and ABTS scavenge assay, respectively. The partial least squares regression algorithm was used to relate the spectra to the reference values. Various methods for spectra pretreatment and variable selection were optimized to improve the predictability and stability of the models. As a result, the best models yielded very satisfying results, of which the values of coefficients of determination were all >0.94, and the values of residual predictive deviation were all >4. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading cause of blindness worldwide and the most common cause of blindness among the working population. Early treatment of the disease is essential to prevent severe visual loss among patients. But there are few therapeutic options available for early stage diabetic retinopathy. We present the case of an early stage diabetic retinopathy patient presented with retinal hemorrhages in the superior temporal area and disc hemorrhages of disc nasal area. The patient was diagnosed with mild NPDR on fundus examinations. After 6 months of taking modified-Goshaiinkigan (mGJG), the characteristic features of mild NPDR disappeared. Throughout three consecutive years of follow-ups, no evident lesions that could be diagnosed as DR were found during fundus examinations. Many components of mGJG have potential efficacy toward diabetic retinopathy. This study suggests that mGJG is a possible medication for early stage DR. Concerning the degenerative characteristics of DR, early management strategies are important in young DM patients and integrative care, such as in this case, are worth investigating further., (Copyright © 2018 The Authors. Sijunzi decoction, a renowned Chinese prescription has long been utilized to treat gastrointestinal problems. In the context of this research work, the use of Ultra high performance liquid chromatography combined with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry was made to separate and characterize the components of Sijunzi decoction. The performance of Liquid chromatography was carried out on a C8 column (150 mm × 2.1 mm, 1.8 μm); moreover, the mobile phase were consisted of 0.2% formic acid (A) and acetonitrile (B). In accordance with the findings, characterization of 120 chemical compounds was performed by liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. The key constituents among them included ginsenosides (in Radix Ginseng), 16 triterpene carboxylic acids (in Poria), sesquiterpenes (in Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), triterpenesaponins (in Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle) as well as flavonoids (in Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle) in Sijunzi decoction. Verruca planae (VP) are warts caused by the human papillomavirus. Many patients develop resistance to the conventional therapy for these lesions. Therefore, alternative therapies are needed. We encountered a patient with VP who showed resistance to conventional therapy and was subsequently treated with Dangguijakyak-san (TJ-23; Tsumura, Japan; and Tokishakuyakusan in Japanese) and coix seed tablets with favorable outcomes. A 29-year-old woman had typical VP on her left upper extremity for >11 years. She had been receiving conventional therapies such as immunotherapy with diphenylcyclopropenone, and tretinoin and imiquimod ointments. However, her VP symptoms persisted. Therefore, she was given herbal medication therapy consisting of Dangguijakyak-san (TJ-23) and coix seeds (500mg coix seed extract; Kracie, Japan). At the four-month follow-up, the papules were found to have disappeared. Therefore, we stopped the TJ-23 + coix seed therapy. Until September 2014, the patient has had no recurrence. Microscopic identification using optical microscopes is a simple and effective method to identify powdered traditional medicines made from plants, animals and fungi. Sometimes, the criteria based on physical properties of the microscopic characteristics of drug powder may be ambiguous, which makes the microscopic identification method subjective and empirical to some extent. In this research, the vibrational microspectroscopic identification method is proposed for more explicit discrimination of powdered traditional medicines. The chemical micromorphology, i.e., chemical compositions and related physical morphologies, of the drug powder can be profiled objectively and quantitatively by infrared and Raman microspectroscopy, leading to better understanding about the formation mechanisms of microscopic characteristics and more accurate identification criteria. As an example, the powder of Poria, which is one of the most used traditional Chinese medicines, is studied in this research. Three types of hyphae are classified according to their infrared spectral features in the region from 1200 to 900 cm(-1). Different kinds of polysaccharides indicate that these hyphae may be in different stages of the growth. The granular and branched clumps observed by the optical microscope may be formed from the aggregation of the mature hyphae with β-D-glucan reserves. The newfound spherical particles may originate from the exuded droplets in the fresh Poria because they are both composed of α-D-glucan. The results are helpful to understand the development of the hyphae and the formation of active polysaccharides in Poria and to establish accurate microspectroscopic identification criteria., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
