The dimensional stability of paper during printing is crucial for ensuring production quality and runnability. However, inkjet printing faces inherent challenges due to the hygroscopic nature of paper and the use of water-based inks. Despite freshly printed sheets are flat, a considerable development of paper curl is often observed during storage. In this study, we establish the link between the migration of ink co-solvents and the long-term curl development of printed paper. A4 paper sheets were sprayed with a water-glycerol model ink and changes in the sheet's curvature were monitored using a 2D-laser sensor. We also investigated glycerol migration by splitting the sheets into layers and determining the glycerol distribution using high-performance liquid chromatography. Our results demonstrate the development of curl during storage as well as glycerol migration in thickness direction of the sheet, both on a comparable timescale. We thus propose that long term curl in inkjet printing can be caused by z-directional migration of the co-solvent (glycerol) over time. This study enhances understanding of the physical mechanisms that drive the long-term curl phenomenon in inkjet-printed sheets. The results can be used to optimize printing processes, allowing for the production of higher quality printed products with greater dimensional stability.

This work focuses on a systematic method to produce Ag, Cu, and Ag/Cu metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) in situ assisted with ultrasound on cellulose paper. By tuning the concentration of AgNO3 and CuSO4 salt precursors and ultrasound time, combined with a fixed concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) as a reducing agent, it was possible to control the size, morphology, and polydispersity of the resulting MNPs on cellulose papers. Notably, high yield and low polydispersity of MNPs and bimetallic nanoparticles are achieved by increasing the sonication time on paper samples pre-treated with salt precursors before reduction with AA. Moreover, mechanical analysis on paper samples presenting well-dispersed and distributed MNPs showed slightly decreasing values of Young's modulus compared to neat papers. The strain at break is substantially improved in papers containing solely Ag or Cu MNPs. The latter suggests that the elastic/plastic transition and deformation of papers are tuned by cellulose and MNPs interfacial interaction, as indicated by mechanical analysis. The proposed method provides insights into each factor affecting the sonochemistry in situ synthesis of MNPs on cellulose papers. In addition, it offers a straightforward alternative to scale up the production of MNPs on paper, ensuring an eco-friendly method.

Lignocellulosic materials are widely used for food packaging due to their renewable and biodegradable nature. However, their porous and absorptive properties can lead to the uptake and retention of bacteria during food processing, transportation, and storage, which pose a potential risk for outbreaks of foodborne disease. Thus, it is of great importance to understand how bacteria proliferate and survive on lignocellulosic surfaces. The aim of this research was to compare the growth and survivability of Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria innocua on bleached and unbleached paper packaging materials. Two different paper materials were fabricated to simulate linerboard from fully bleached and unbleached market pulps and inoculated with each bacterium at high bacterial loads (107 CFU). The bacteria propagated during the first 48 h of incubation and persisted at very high levels (>107 CFU/cm2) for 40 days for all paper and bacterium types. However, the unbleached paper allowed for a greater degree of bacterial growth to occur compared to bleached paper, suspected to be due to the more hydrophobic nature of the unbleached, lignin-containing fibers. Several other considerations may also alter the behavior of bacteria on lignocellulosic materials, such as storage conditions, nutrient availability, and chemical composition of the fibers.

Sustainable strategies to improve the water resistance of cellulose paper are actively sought. In this work, polymeric microspheres (PMs), prepared through emulsion polymerization of cellulose nanofibers stabilized rubber seed oil-derived monomer, were investigated as coatings on corrugated medium paper (CMP). After infiltrating porous paper with PMs, the water-resistant corrugated papers (WRCP n ) with enhanced mechanical properties were obtained. When 30 wt% PMs were introduced, WRCP 30 turned out to be highly compacted with an increased water contact angle of 106.3° and a low water vapor transmission rate of 81 g/(m 2 d) at 23 °C. Meanwhile, the tensile strength of WRCP 30 increased to 22.2 MPa, a 4-fold increase from CMP. When tested in a well-hydrated state, 71% of its mechanical strength in the dry state was maintained. Even with a low content of 10 wt% PMs, WRCP 10 also exhibited stable tensile strength and water wettability during the cyclic soaking-drying process. Cu 2+ contamination and food spoilage raise food and drinking water safety issues, posing a serious threat to human health. Besides, Cu 2+ and H 2 S levels indicate excess Cu 2+ -caused diseases and protein-containing food spoilage. Herein, a coumarin-containing bifunctional paper-based fluorescent platform integrated with a straightforward smartphone color recognition app is developed by an all-in-one strategy. The proposed fluorescent materials can simultaneously detect Cu 2+ and H 2 S for on-demand food and drinking water safety monitoring at home. Specifically, a coumarin-derived fluorescence sensor (referred to as CMIA) with a low detection limit (0.430 μM) and high-selectivity/-sensitivity for Cu 2+ is synthesized through a simple one-step route and then loaded onto commercially used cellulose fiber filter paper to engineer a biomass-based fluorescent material (CMIA-FP). The CMIA-FP offers user-friendly, high-precision, fast-responsive, and real-time visual monitoring of Cu 2+ . Moreover, CMIA forms a chemically stable complex with Cu 2+ , loaded onto filter paper to prepare another biomass-based fluorescent platform (CMIA-CU-FP) for visual real-time monitoring of H 2 S. We proposed a triple functional SERS substrate by immobilized Ag nanoparticles on the surface of filter paper. The high dense Ag nanoparticles were distributed on the SERS substrate via in-situ growth process. By optimizing the parameter in preparation process, the optimal filter paper SERS substrate was fabricated by using 30 mM of AgNO 3 with 20 S growth time. Due to capillary-effect wicking of cellulose fiber, the paper SERS substrate provide simple, fast and pump-free function for transferring analyte onto sharp tip through development of fluid. The fluid flow also brings target concentrate effect within the tip area. Furthermore, the separation feasibility was obtained during the development process of fluid. The preconcentrated effects not only enhanced the SERS signal of analyte, but also improve the fluorescence visible effect. The filter paper SERS substrate was successfully used for separating, concentrating and detecting Sudan dye from chili product, the detection limit could achieve 10 -6 M. Frequent oceanic oil spill incidents and the discharge of industrial oily wastewaters have caused serious threats to environments, food chains and human beings. Lignin wastes with many reactive groups exist as the byproducts from bioethanol and pulping processing industries, and they are either discarded as wastes or directly consumed as a fuel. To make full use of lignin wastes and simultaneously deal with oily wastewaters, porous lignin-based composites have been rationally designed and prepared. In this review, recent advances in the preparation of porous lignin-based composites are summarized in terms of aerogels, sponges, foams, papers, and membranes, respectively. Then, the mechanisms and the application of porous lignin-based adsorbents and filtration materials for oil/water separation are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of porous lignin-based composites are proposed in the field of oil/water separation. The utilization of abundant lignin wastes can replace fossil resources, and meanwhile porous lignin-based composites can be used to efficiently treat with oily wastewaters. Paper is one of the most ubiquitous materials. In the present work, it is employed as a flexible, inexpensive, degradable, lightweight and eco-friendly substrate for solvent-free fabrication of the Inter Digitated Capacitor (IDC). IDCs are employed in many sensing and energy harvesting applications recently, thus it was imperative to find a technique to fabricate IDCs using environment friendly and biodegradable processes. With fixed and controlled parameters, Butter paper exhibits the lowest resistance and maximum capacitance which were almost 1 kΩ and in the range of 20–30 pF respectively. Additionally, maximum capacitance per unit area was achieved through configuring the shape of graphite electrodes and it was observed that semi-circular geometry exhibits maximum capacitance, giving a value of almost 60 pF. Furthermore, the investigation has been made on green fabrication process to get the range of scalability and tune-ability of the capacitance of IDCs by impregnating Butter Papers in NaCl solution and also talking about the saturation point of these solutions, post which the IDCs start behaving erraticaly.The capacitance value in this case shows extrememly positive results and we managed to obtain a value of 18 nF which was a significant jump when compared to the untreated samples, which exhibted capacitance values in the range of pico-farads. Thus, it was discovered that Butter Paper(BP) could potentially function as a feasible and promising choice for flexible electronics.

Paper derived from lignocellulose has great advantages over plastics as packaging material, nevertheless, the poor water- and oil-resistances of paper-derived products limited their application in high-end field. Herein, novel dimer acid-based waterborne polyurethanes (DWPUs) with different content of dimer acid-based polyester polyol (DG) were prepared and used as water- and oil-resistant coating for paper substrate. The effects of DG contents on water- and oil-resistances, mechanical properties and thermal stability of DWPUs coated papers were systematically investigated. When the content of DG reached up to 7 wt% (based on polyester glycol), the paper coated by DWPU exhibited 88.06% decrease in Cobb 60 value, 8.7 times increase in kit rating compared with uncoated paper. Meanwhile, DWPUs coated papers showed good mechanical properties and thermal stability. These improvements are attributed to the flexible long-alkyl chain, and six-ring structure of DWPUs as well as the continuous and homogeneous DWPU-derived membrane on the surface of paper. This study provides a new framework for the preparation of high quality, multifunctional, environmentally friendly water- and oil-resistant coatings for paper substrates.

It is generally agreed that photosynthetic organisms demonstrated their potential for the development of highly sensitive, sustainable, and affordable biosensors to detect toxic chemicals in aquatic ecosystems, being a primary target for most toxic pollutants. Based on this principle, the application of photosynthetic material as a biological receptor in biosensing provides an excellent tool for a cheap and effective detection of a wide range of life-threatening pollutants. This review will provide a comprehensive overview of photosynthesis-based biosensors, shading light on the diverse types of photosynthetic materials to be exploited, the different supports on which such material can be immobilized, and the dual opto-electrochemical transduction in which it can be integrated for the environmental monitoring of photosynthetic herbicides.

This paper discusses the spectral sensitivity of the discoloration of historical rag paper simultaneously affected by Relative Humidity (RH) and Oxygen concentration [O2] in the ambient environment. Sacrificial samples were degraded using narrowband radiation sources centred at 450 nm, 525 nm, and 625 nm in combinations of RH and [O2] at two levels: 0% [O2] and 70% RH, 21% [O2] and 70% RH, 0% [O2] and 20% RH, and 21% [O2] and 20% RH. Diffuse reflectance was measured before and during the degradation experimental runs. Consistent qualitative results were obtained for the change in reflectance and the change in tristimulus total color change in CIELAB color space. In both cases, the increase of discoloration was modelled logarithmically over time. Among the three factors investigated in this research, wavelength of the radiation (Λ) was found to have the strongest effect. The radiation at 450 nm induced the most and fastest discoloration whereas the radiation at 625 nm induced the least and slowest discoloration. This spectral dependence was likely to be related to the photo energies at different wavelengths, but other factors were found to have played a role. Further analyses revealed that the main effects and the effects of the interactions between [O2] and Λ and between RH and Λ on the discoloration of historical rag paper were statistically significant. It suggests that managing the spectral power distribution of the radiation source can be crucial in the collection management.

Borax is strictly regulated in the food processing and pharmaceutical industry due to its physiological toxicity, and the development of a direct analytical method is essential for effectively monitoring the borax abuse. In this work, the fluorescence properties of flavonoids, including flavones, isoflavones and flavonols, were systematically investigated from aqueous to borax solutions, and it was found that the weak intrinsic fluorescence of flavonols could be pervasively sensitized by borax. A natural flavonol, morin, was subsequently chosen as a representative probe to develop a turn-on fluorescence sensing method for borax analysis, which achieved a linear response spanning four orders of magnitude with a detection limit of 1.07 μM (0.22 μg mL -1 in terms of Na 2 B 4 O 7 content). Furthermore, a smartphone-assisted paper-based test device was designed and constructed by 3D printing technology. Using morin-impregnated test strips as the carrier, the borax could be visually detected by the RGB signals of the captured images, with a detection limit of 0.13 mM (27.05 μg mL -1 for Na 2 B 4 O 7 ). Combining ion exchange treatment for food samples and sodium periodate oxidation for drug samples, the developed methods were successfully applied for the direct analysis of borax in various products with the recoveries of 86.9-106.3% for traditional fluorescence analysis and 82.7-108.8% for smartphone-assisted fluorescence sensing. A paper electrochemical immunosensor for the combined binding and quantification of the heart failure (HF) biomarker Galectin-3 has been developed. The simple design of the new sensor is comprised of paper material that is decorated with gold nanostructures, to maximize its electroactive surface area, and functionalized with target-specific recognition molecules to selectively bind the protein from aqueous solutions. The binding of the protein caused the blockage of the electron flow to the sensor electroactive surface, thus causing its oxidation potential to shift and the corresponding current to reduce quantitatively with the increase in the protein concentration within the working range of 0.5ng/mL-8ng/mL (LOQ-0.5 ng/mL). This novel sensor was able to quantify Galectin-3 concentration in saliva samples from HF patients and healthy controls within 20 min with good reproducibility (RSD = 3.64%), without the need for complex sample processing steps. The electrochemical measurements of the patient samples were cross validated by ELISA where the percent agreement between the two methods was found to be 92.7% (RSD = 7.20%). Background: Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a fetal protein that can indicate congenital anomalies such as Down syndrome and spinal canal blockage when detected at abnormal levels in pregnant women. Current AFP detection methods rely on invasive blood or serum samples, which require sophisticated equipment. From the many solutions proposed, colorimetric paper-based assays excel in point-of-care settings. The concept of paper-based ELISA (p-ELISA) enhances traditional methods, aligning with the ASSURED criteria for diagnostics in resource-limited regions. Despite success in microfluidic paper-based assay devices, laser printing remains underexplored for p-ELISA. Additionally, modifying the paper surface provides an additional layer of sensitivity enhancement., Results: In this study, we developed a novel laser-printed paper-based ELISA (LP-pELISA) for rapid, sensitive, and noninvasive detection of AFP in saliva samples. The LP-pELISA platform was fabricated by printing hydrophobic barriers on filter paper using a laser printer, followed by depositing hydroxyapatite (HAp) as an immobilization material for the antibodies. The colorimetric detection was achieved using AuNPs functionalized with anti-AFP antibodies and silver nitrate enhancement. The LP-pELISA exhibited a linear response for AFP detection in both buffer and saliva samples over a range of 1.0-800 ng mL -1 , with a limit of detection (LOD) reaching 1.0 ng mL -1 . The assay also demonstrated good selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and stability. The LP-pELISA was further validated by testing spiked human saliva samples, showing its potential for point-of-care diagnosis of congenital disabilities., Significance: The LP-pELISA is a noninvasive platform showcasing simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and user-friendliness, utilizing laser printing, hydroxyapatite modification, and saliva samples to efficiently detect AFP. Deoxyribonuclease I (DNase I) is a biomarker which has important applications in various biological processes. Thus, it is highly important to develop a user-friendly method for the detection of DNase I. Here, we present a paper-based distance sensor for the rapid detection of DNase I based on changes in the viscosity of DNA mucus. The viscosity of DNA mucus varies with different concentrations of DNase I, showing different water flow lengths on the pH test papers, this makes the quantification of DNase I possible. This method has a wide linear range (0.01-10 U/mL), excellent sensitivity, remarkable specificity and excellent reproducibility. The detection limit reaches 0.003 U/mL. Additionally, it can be well applied to detection of DNase I inhibitors, assay of DNase I in human serum and quality evaluation of nucleic acid scavengers. Thermal printing technology requires a color developer to activate the dye under the action of heat. Bisphenol A (BPA) has traditionally been used for this purpose, although it has increasingly been replaced by bisphenol S (BPS) in recent years. Due to concerns regarding their toxicity, the Swiss authorities have banned both BPA and BPS from thermal papers since 2020. The impact of this regulatory decision was evaluated during 3 monitoring campaigns: in 2013-2014, 2019 and 2021. They were used to describe the starting point, the transition phase, and the status after entry into force of the ban, respectively. Whereas the use of BPA as color developer dropped from 82.2% in 2013/14 to 10.8% in 2021, the fraction of BPS-based thermal paper rose from 3.1% to 19.1% during the same period, despite being banned. However, Pergafast® 201 (PF201) is now the main color developer in thermal paper in Switzerland, with an occurrence of 60.3%. Other alternatives such as D-8, TGSA, PPSMU, NKK-1304, BPS-MAE, D-90 and Blue4est® have only been marginally detected. Paper-based analysis has captivated scientists' attention in the field of analytical chemistry and related areas for the last two decades. Arguably no other area of modern chemical analysis is so broad and diverse in its approaches spanning from simple 'low-tech' low-cost paper-based analytical devices (PADs) requiring no or simple instrumentation, to sophisticated PADs and microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) featuring elements of modern material science and nanomaterials affording high selectivity and sensitivity. Correspondingly diverse is the applicability, covering resource-limited scenarios on the one hand and most advanced approaches on the other. Herein we offer a view reflecting this diversity in the approaches and types of devices. The core idea of this article rests in dividing μPADs according to their type into two groups: A) instrumentation-free μPADs for resource-limited scenarios or developing countries and B) instrumentation-based μPADs as futuristic POC devices for e-diagnostics mainly aimed at developed countries. Each of those two groups is presented and discussed with the view of the main requirements in the given area, the most common targets, sample types and suitable detection approaches either implementing high-tech elements or low-tech low-cost approaches. Limnocharis flava is a noxious aquatic weed that poses a threat to paddy cultivation. The high cellulose and low lignin contents in this plant make it a potential raw material for papermaking. Against this backdrop, this study was taken up to develop Limnocharis flava (LF) based sheets containing natural fibres from Banana (B), Pineapple (P), and Rice Straw (RS) as reinforcing agents. The influence of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a binder on the LF-based sheets was also studied. To enhance the mechanical and moisture resistance properties, a chitosan coating was provided to the sheets. Analytical tests for mechanical properties, water barrier properties, functional groups, structure and microstructure, thermal properties and biodegradability were performed. Among the samples, LF + B showed the highest tensile strength (34.86 Mpa) and bursting strength (13.055 kg/cm 2 ), while LF + R had higher puncture and tearing strengths. Chitosan coating was found to enhance the sheets and improve the water barrier properties mechanically. The contact angle of LF + B increased from 91.6° to 110.65°, while the water vapour transmission rate of LF reduced from 532.18 to 404.47 on providing chitosan coating. The significant interactions of reinforcing agents were confirmed by the results of FTIR and that of the coating by the SEM micrographs. The LF-based sheets were also found to have decent thermal stability. The high value of the crystallinity index in LF + R samples supported their remarkable mechanical properties. In banknote production, several security features are introduced into banknotes, including perforation of organic substrates like paper, polymer or their composites. This paper describes a comparative study about efficiency and quality aspects of laser drilling processes of organic substrates with different laser systems. The substrates investigated are cotton-based paper, Guardian™ (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) and two composite substrates composed of cotton paper and polymer (Durasafe™ and Hybrid™). The used laser wavelengths are 515 nm, 1060/1070 nm and 2940 nm. Laser systems with pulse durations covering the ultra-short pulse regime (ps), nanosecond pulses (ns) and microsecond pulses (µs) were used. This article gives an overview of this topic, deals with the tasks and challenges in this special field of laser manufacturing and compares different laser systems with respect to drilling quality and energy specific volume.

Tropolone reacts with amino acids to form adducts that generate contrast on highly fluorescent paper surfaces upon UV irradiation. Furthermore, the conjugated seven-membered ring of tropolone enables secondary chemical treatments; demonstrated here using two diazonium salts, 4-methoxybenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate (4MBD) and 4-nitrobenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate (4NBD). These produce yellow and red dyed fingermarks, respectively. While tropolone treatment is rapid to effect and compatible with ninhydrin in a detection sequence, the methodology proved less effective than current chemical visualisation treatments. Nevertheless, this work unambiguously demonstrates the reactivity of tropolone towards fingermark residues and may inspire future generations of non-benzenoid chemical visualisation treatments.

Detection of mycotoxins by conventional methods such as ELISA or LC-MS can be expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, paper-based biosensors can be effectively used for on-site analysis, due to their low cost and easy detection procedures. Nevertheless, even when the application of colorimetric methods on paper enhance the simplicity and affordability of multiple determinations, the signal intensity and final readout can be affected by a limited color uniformity. In this work, Ellman’s method for the quantification of aflatoxin B1 was utilized as a model colorimetric assay on paper, in which the test zones were modified with chitosan-immobilized enzyme (AChE). A comparison of the cross-linking effect of genipin on two chitosans of varying molar mass and degree of acetylation, exhibited a greater signal enhancement from the sample with a higher degree of acetylation and molecular weight.

Many diseases are detected through blood tests. Currently, most blood tests are done on plasma instead of whole blood because of the interference of blood cells on detection results. Here, we developed a laminated microfluidic paper-based analytical device (L-μPAD) for the separation of plasma from whole blood without using plasma separation membrane (PSM). A lateral flow design consisting of a circular sampling zone and rectangular detection zone was patterned on the paper substrate using laser printing technology. The μPAD was then laminated after impregnation with KCl solution. Lamination and electrolyte addition represented synergistic effects on the separation by controlling the pore size of the paper. In addition, by preventing evaporation on one hand and squeezing paper pores on the other hand, lamination caused longer movement of the separated plasma, the longest plasma path reported so far. The separation process was monitored using colorimetric reagent bromocresol green and scanning electron microscopy. The process of separation was completed in less than 90s without significant hemolysis and the separated plasma was far from the interfering effect of red blood cells. Dissolved sulfide tends to species transformation and loss upon leaving the matrix, thus the development of a practical on-site determination of sulfide is crucial for environmental monitoring and human health. In this work, a novel paper-based ratiometric fluorescence sensor was developed for the field analysis of sulfide, which system was constructed by the inner filter effect (IFE) of CdS quantum dots (QDs) toward carbon dots (C-dots). Instead of an aqueous phase system, the conversion of sulfide to its hydride would induce the in-situ formation of CdS QDs on the paper, which acted as an energy acceptor to quench the emission of C-dots, leading to a variation of ratiometric fluorescence from blue to yellow with the increasing concentration of sulfide. Moreover, we proposed a smartphone-based fluorescence capture device integrated with a programmed Python program, accomplishing both color recognition and accurate detection of sulfide. Under the optimal condition, this ratiometric fluorescence sensor allowed for the on-site analysis of sulfide with a limit of detection of 0.05 μM. The accuracy of the sensor was validated via the successful field analysis of environmental water samples with satisfactory recoveries. The simultaneous bioremediation and bioconversion of papermaking wastewater by psychrotrophic microorganisms holds great promise for developing sustainable environments and economies in cold regions. Here, the psychrotrophic bacterium Raoultella terrigena HC6 presented high endoglucanase (26.3 U/mL), xylosidase (732 U/mL), and laccase (8.07 U/mL) activities for lignocellulose deconstruction at 15 °C. mRNA monitoring and phenotypic variation analyses confirmed that cold-inducible cold shock protein A (CspA) facilitated the expression of the cel208, xynB68, and lac432 genes to increase the enzyme activities in strain HC6. Furthermore, the cspA gene-overexpressing mutant (strain HC6-cspA) was deployed in actual papermaking wastewater and achieved 44.3%, 34.1%, 18.4%, 80.2% and 100% removal rates for cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, COD, and NO 3 - -N at 15 °C. Simultaneously, 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BD) was produced from the effluent with a titer of 2.98 g/L and productivity of 0.154 g/L/h. This research aims to evaluate the suitability of cryptocurrency as money from the Islamic perspective. Money, in the Islamic perspective, has specific characteristics and requirements, such as stability and is based on assets. Cryptocurrency may not fulfil this as it has queries as money from the Islamic perspective. The research method applied data of 23 cryptocurrency prices and related information. The result shows that cryptocurrency is hugely volatile and has limits to being called ‘money,’ as it is limited and used for speculation, which is prohibited in Islam. The research implies that Muslims would be reluctant to use cryptocurrency as money, as a currency of transaction. This reason raise an expectation that the cryptocurrency will not develop rapidly in Muslim countries.

This study highlights the importance of determining substrate specificity at variable experimental conditions. Lipases and esterases were isolated from microorganisms cultivated from Eucalyptus wood species and then concentrated (cellulases removed) and characterized. Phenol red agar plates supplemented with 1% olive oil or tributyrin was ascertained to be the most favourable method of screening for lipolytic activity. Lipolytic activity of the various enzymes were highest at 45–61 U/ml at the optimum temperature and pH of between at 30–35 °C and pH 4–5, respectively. Change in pH influenced the substrate specificity of the enzymes tested. The majority of enzymes tested displayed a propensity for longer aliphatic acyl chains such as dodecanoate (C12), myristate (C14), palmitate (C16) and stearate (C18) indicating that they could be characterised as potential lipases. Prospective esterases were also detected with specificity towards acetate (C2), butyrate (C4) and valerate (C5). Enzymes maintained up to 95% activity at the optimal pH and temperature for 2–3 h. It is essential to test substrates at various pH and temperature when determining optimum activity of lipolytic enzymes, a method rarely employed. The stability of the enzymes at acidic pH and moderate temperatures makes them excellent candidates for application in the treatment of pitch during acid bi-sulphite pulping, which would greatly benefit the pulp and paper industry.

Paper and thread are widely used as the substrates for fabricating low-cost, disposable, and portable microfluidic analytical devices used in clinical, environmental, and food safety monitoring. Concerning separation methods including chromatography and electrophoresis, these substrates provide unique platforms for developing portable devices. This review focuses on summarizing recent research on the miniaturization of the separation techniques using paper and thread. Preconcentration, purification, desalination, and separation of various analytes are achievable using electrophoresis and chromatography methods integrated with modified or unmodified paper/thread wicking channels. A variety of 2D and 3D designs of paper/thread platforms for zone electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis, and modified/unmodified chromatography are discussed with emphasis on their limitation and improvements. The current progress in the signal amplification strategies such as isoelectric focusing, isotachophoresis, ion concentration polarization, isoelectric focusing, and stacking methods in paper-based devices are reviewed. Different strategies for chromatographic separations based on paper/thread will be explained. The separation of target species from complex samples and their determination by integration with other analytical methods like spectroscopy and electrochemistry are well-listed. Dried serum spots that are well prepared can be attractive alternatives to frozen serum samples for shelving specimens in a medical or research center's biobank and mailing freshly prepared serum to specialized laboratories. During the pre-analytical phase, complications can arise which are often challenging to identify or are entirely overlooked. These complications can lead to reproducibility issues, which can be avoided in serum protein analysis by implementing optimized storage and transfer procedures. With a method that ensures accurate loading of filter paper discs with donor or patient serum, a gap in dried serum spot preparation and subsequent serum analysis shall be filled. Pre-punched filter paper discs with a 3 mm diameter are loaded within seconds in a highly reproducible fashion (approximately 10% standard deviation) when fully submerged in 10 μl of serum, named the "Submerge and Dry" protocol. Such prepared dried serum spots can store several hundred micrograms of proteins and other serum components. Serum-borne antigens and antibodies are reproducibly released in 20 μl elution buffer in high yields (approximately 90%). In this study, nanomaterials capable of enzyme-free glucose quantification and colorimetric readout are integrated into a microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs). Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were utilized as a peroxidase-like nanozyme and a colorimetric probe to achieve glucose monitoring. In this developed device, glucose is oxidized by AuNPs to generate hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), which flows in the paper microchannels toward detection zones. H 2 O 2 then etches the immobilized AgNPs to induce a color change. The intensity of color change is easily monitored using a smartphone application. Following method optimization, we obtained a linear range from 0.50 to 10.0 mmol L -1  (R 2  = 0.9921) and a detection limit (LOD) of 340.0 μmol L -1 . This falls in the clinically relevant range for glucose monitoring and diabetes diagnosis in humans. In addition, the total analysis time is just 20 min, which is significantly less than the same experiment performed in the solution phase. Also, our method is markedly selective; other substrates do not interfere. The recovery test in human control samples was in the range of 98.47-102.34% and the highest relative standard deviation (RSD) was 3.58%. The enzyme-free approach for glucose sensing is highly desirable for diabetes diagnosis as it replaces the more expensive enzyme with cheaper nanomaterials. Water-associated or water-related infectious disease outbreaks are caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, which can be transmitted through contaminated water sources, poor sanitation practices, or insect vectors. Low- and middle-income countries bear the major burden of these infections due to inadequate hygiene and subpar laboratory facilities, making it challenging to monitor and detect infections in a timely manner. However, even developed countries are not immune to these diseases, as inadequate wastewater management and contaminated drinking water supplies can also contribute to disease outbreaks. Nucleic acid amplification tests have proven to be effective for early disease intervention and surveillance of both new and existing diseases. Over the centuries, various types of paper have been produced, each characterized by a different ratio of natural macromolecules, mainly lignin and cellulose. Handmade paper has a higher content of cellulose with respect to the early machine-made paper, where lignin is the other important component. Microorganisms are able to colonize and deteriorate both types. They can release on their surfaces pigments and colorants which produced anesthetic stains. To better understand the microbiota colonizing these stains, 17 samples were analyzed, from both handmade and machine-made paper surfaces, as well as library and archive environments. Combination of microbiological and high-throughput sequencing (HTS) approaches were applied. The culture-dependent methodology comprised: isolation, DNA identification, hydrolytic and paper staining assays. The HTS was performed by MinION platform and for the mycobiome a more suitable bioinformatics analysis pipeline, MetONTIIME based on QIIME2 framework, was applied. The paper model staining assay permitted the direct recognition of colorizing isolates which in combination with sequencing data evidenced a complex microbial community able to stain the two types of paper. Staining abilities were confirmed by frequently isolated and detected fungi as well as newly discovered ones Roussoella euonymi and Achaetomium. Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) offer a unique possibility for a cost-effective portable and rapid detection of a wide range of small molecules and macromolecules and even microorganisms. In this line, electrochemical detection methods are key techniques for the qualitative analysis of different types of ligands. The electrochemical sensing μPADs have been devised for the rapid, accurate, and quantitative detection of oncomarkers through two-/three-dimensional (2D/3D) approaches. The 2D μPADs were first developed and then transformed into 3D systems via folding and/or twisting of paper. The microfluidic channels and connections were created within the layers of paper. Based on the fabrication methods, 3D μPADs can be classified into origami and stacking devices. Various fabrication methods and materials have been used to create hydrophilic channels in μPADs, among which the wax printing technique is the most common method in fabricating μPADs. The interstitial fluid (ISF) contains rich bioinformation for disease diagnosis and healthcare monitoring. However, the efficient sampling and detection of the biomolecules in ISF is still challenging. Herein, we develop a facile but versatile ISF analysis platform by combining controllable hollow microneedles (HMNs) and elaborate microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs). The HMNs and μPADs was fixed in a bottom PDMS layer. A top PDMS layer containing a cylindrical cavity to produce negative pressure for sampling was packaged on the bottom PDMS layer. The HMNs enable efficient and swift sampling of sufficient ISF to the μPADs through one-touch finger operation without extra manipulations. The μPADs realized to simultaneously detect glucose and lactic acid in the detection area to produce chromogenic agents and analyzed by the self-programed RGB application (APP) in smartphones. Due to the serious risks of lead pollution to human health, it plays a great role in constructing a simple, inexpensive, portable, and user-friendly strategy for Pb 2+ detection in environmental samples. Herein, a paper-based distance sensor is developed to detect Pb 2+ assisted with the target-responsive DNA hydrogel. Pb 2+ can activate DNAzyme to cleave its substrate strand, which results in the hydrolysis of the DNA hydrogel. The released water molecules trapped in the hydrogel can flow along the patterned pH paper due to the capillary force. The water flow distance (WFD) is significantly influenced by the amount of water released from the collapsed DNA hydrogel triggered by the addition of various Pb 2+ concentrations. In this way, Pb 2+ can be quantitatively detected without using specialized instruments and labeled molecules, and the limit of detection (LOD) of Pb 2+ is 3.0 nM. Additionally, the Pb 2+ sensor works well in lake water and tap water. Quick identification of paper types for customs is extremely crucial. Although there are a variety of researches focus on the discrimination of paper, these techniques either require complex preprocessing or large-scale instruments, which are not suitable for customs environments. In this study, we predicted the type of customs paper by using a Micro-NIR spectrometer, and compared the results with Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Four different classification algorithms, including linear and non-linear classifiers: K-nearest neighbor (KNN), soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA), partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and least squares-support vector machine (LS-SVM) were employed to classify the type of paper. 20 groups of datasets were selected by Monte Carlo sampling. For Micro-NIR data, the performances of KNN and LS-SVM were outstanding than SIMCA and PLS-DA, with the average accuracies 96.06% and 98.91%, respectively. The outcome of SIMCA and PLS-DA were similar, with the average accuracies 93.00% and 93.97%. Based on the standard derivation, the best stability of models was LS-SVM (1.06%), followed by PLS-DA (1.12%), KNN (1.22%) and SIMCA (3.07%). Compared with ATR-FTIR, the effects of Micro-NIR were better, which were embodies in the better KNN and SIMCA models, and the comparable LS-SVM model. The detection of specific biomarkers is used in various phases of the diagnosis of plant and human diseases, from prognosis to monitoring. Herein, we report a Prussian blue nanocube-modified immunodevice interfaced with a paper disc for the detection of plant biomarkers via streptavidin-biotin recognition. The detection ability of the immunodevice was assessed using Potato virus X as a model biomarker and analyzed using cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The immunodevice displayed excellent performance for Potato virus X detection with a detection limit of 0.92 nM (3S/N). The selectivity of the fabricated Potato virus X immunodevice was investigated using closely associated antigens, such as potato aucuba mosaic virus, Potato virus Y, and Potato virus A. The Potato virus X immunodevice exhibited ∼ 90 % recovery in spiked complex plant samples with a relative error of ∼ 9 %. Furthermore, the immunodevice was used to screen for Potato virus X in 10 samples from potato tubers and leaves. The paper-disc-interfaced immunodevice was also evaluated by detecting other biomarkers, such as potato aucuba mosaic virus in plant diseases and C-reactive protein in human ones. Smartphone has long been considered as one excellent platform for disease screening and diagnosis, especially when combined with microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) that feature low cost, ease of use, and pump-free operations. In this paper, we report a deep learning-assisted smartphone platform for ultra-accurate testing of paper-based microfluidic colorimetric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (c-ELISA). Different from existing smartphone-based μPAD platforms, whose sensing reliability is suffered from uncontrolled ambient lighting conditions, our platform is able to eliminate those random lighting influences for enhanced sensing accuracy. We first constructed a dataset that contains c-ELISA results (n = 2048) of rabbit IgG as the model target on μPADs under eight controlled lighting conditions. Those images are then used to train four different mainstream deep learning algorithms. By training with these images, the deep learning algorithms can well eliminate the influences of lighting conditions. Among them, the GoogLeNet algorithm gives the highest accuracy (>97%) in quantitative rabbit IgG concentration classification/prediction, which also provides 4% higher area under curve (AUC) value than that of the traditional curve fitting results analysis method. In addition, we fully automate the whole sensing process and achieve the "image in, answer out" to maximize the convenience of the smartphone. A simple and user-friendly smartphone application has been developed that controls the whole process. A microfluidic biosensor paper-based analytical device, or μPAD, was developed as a point-of-care assay platform for the simultaneous determination of three clinically important markers: uric acid, urea, and triglycerides. To achieve a simultaneous determination, thermosensitive valves based on N-isopropylacrylamide polymers controlled the flow of fluid in the μPAD. The evaluation of the analytical characteristics of the μPAD was done using a photographic camera at room temperature. The detection limits were 4.5·10 -5 , 2.5·10 -3 , and 1.5·10 -3  mg mL -1 , for uric acid, urea, and triglycerides, respectively, and the precision expressed as relative standard deviation (% RSD) 3.2, 1.2, and 1.6%. The obtained μPAD devices were validated with real human plasma samples, demonstrating high accuracy and precision. The understanding of the dispersion chemistry of papermaking grade fillers is as important as their effect on paper. Magnesium silicate (talc) is one of the major fillers used for papermaking. It is hydrophobic and chemically inert. The dispersion chemistry of talc of different particle sizes was studied with wetting agent (non-ionic triblock copolymer) and anionic dispersant (sodium salt of polyacrylic acid). Both wetting agent and dispersant were added in talc slurry separately and in combination. The dispersion behavior was studied through measuring the Brookfield viscosity. The wetted and dispersed talc was also added to paper to understand its effect on papermaking process and paper properties. Wetting and dispersion changed the colloidal charge chemistry of talc making it more anionic which reduced the talc retention in paper. Lowering the particle size of talc significantly improved the light scattering coefficient (LSC) of paper and decreased its retention. Controlling colloidal charge of papermaking suspension with cationic polyacrylamide polymer helped in protecting the retention of talc without affecting the LSC of both filler and paper.

A paper-based colourimetric assay for the Point-of-Care Testing (PoCT) of bilirubin has been developed based on the formation of a green-coloured copper-bilirubin complex from a blue-coloured tetraamminecopper(II) sulphate complex. The reaction was studied and optimized by UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy and translated onto a paper strip. Hydrophobic circular well patterns on Whatman chromatography paper were created by wax printing. The tetraamminecopper(II) sulphate complex was drop cast and dried on the reagent zones in the wax-patterned paper. The images of reagent zones captured using a scanner were analyzed using ImageJ software. Bilirubin spiked blood serum was tested in the concentration range of 1.2 to 950 µM. The PAD exhibited sensitivities of 0.4197 a.u/μM and 0.1040 a.u/μM for concentration ranges of bilirubin 1.2 to 96 μM and 105 to 950 μM respectively and a low detection limit of 0.799 µM. The method is highly selective to bilirubin, even in the presence of other biomarkers in serum. This paper presents a binary reinforcement system of polyamide polyamine epichlorohydrin with nanocellulose (PAE-NC) for effectively modification of the reclaimed fibres for paper production, and based on the improvement of physical and mechanical properties of cellulosic fibres together with PAE-NC self-crosslinking networks, the strengthening mechanisms of recycled papers are examined. The PAE-NC binary system was applied directly to old corrugated container (OCC) and softwood bleached kraft pulp (SWBKP), and handsheets are prepared with varying amounts of PAE/NC/PAE-NC, namely 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 wt% (dry pulp). The results showed that the studied additives improved the performance of recycled fibres, whether SWBKP or OCC pulp, and handsheets in solely or combined mechanisms except for the air permeability of the handsheets. The treatment of PAE-NC combination was significantly more effective than those of PAE or NC alone for both OCC and SWBKP, although the combined PAE-NC treatment results in better performance enhancement for OCC than SWBKP handsheets, and the NC alone is more effective than PAE for SWBKP recycled paper and conversely for OCC recycled paper.
