Introduction: Metallic antibacterial nanoparticles have been shown to provide distinct antibacterial advantage and antibiofilm efficacy when applied in infected root canals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of incorporating zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-Np) on the physicochemical properties of Grossman sealer., Methods: Grossman sealer was prepared according to its original formula. Additionally, 4 experimental sealers were prepared by replacing the zinc oxide component of the powder with ZnO-Np (average size of 20 nm) in different amounts (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). Characterization of the setting time, flow, solubility, dimensional changes, and radiopacity were performed according to American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/American Dental Association (ADA) Specification 57. Scanning electron microscopic and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analyses were conducted to assess the ultrastructural and chemical characteristics of experimental sealers subjected to the solubility test. Statistical analyses were performed with analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey-Kramer tests with a significance level of 5%., Results: A statistically significant difference in the setting time was observed among groups (P < .05), but only 25% ZnO-Np sealer complied with ANSI/ADA requirements. There was a significant difference in the flow characteristics between the control and 25% and 75% ZnO-Np experimental sealers (P < .05), but all sealers conformed to ANSI/ADA standardization; 25% ZnO-Np sealer showed significantly less solubility (1.81% ± 0.31%) and dimensional change (-0.34% ± 0.12%) than other sealers (P < .05). All sealers showed ultrastructural changes with increasing solubility., Conclusions: ZnO-Np decreased the setting time and dimensional changes characteristic of Grossman sealer; 25% ZnO-Np improved the physicochemical properties of Grossman sealer in accordance with ANSI/ADA requirements., (Copyright © 2016 American Association of Endodontists. Introduction: This study evaluated the frequency of root canal isthmi (RCIs) in human permanent teeth by using cone-beam computed tomography., Methods: A sample of 1400 teeth of 618 patients (394 women; mean age, 43.4 years) was selected. RCIs were detected longitudinally on 0.1-mm/0.1-mm axial slices of cone-beam computed tomography images of roots scanned from the pulp orifice to the apex, and findings were classified into 7 categories according to RCIs beginning and end: (1) both in the cervical third, (2) begin in the cervical third and end in the middle third, (3) begin in the cervical third and end in the apical third, (4) both in the middle third, (5) begin in the middle third and end in the apical third, (6) both in the apical third, or (7) no isthmus. A χ(2) test with Yates correction or the Fisher exact test was used to analyze categorical variables, described as frequencies (%). The Student t test was used to compare quantitative variables., Results: RCI is a common anatomic structure in human permanent teeth, except in maxillary anterior teeth., Conclusions: The higher frequencies of RCIs (87.9%) were found in mandibular first molars. The frequencies of RCIs according to mean age and tooth group were not significantly different (P > .05), except in mandibular central incisors. Introduction: The morphology of the supernumerary third root (radix) in mandibular first molars was examined by micro-computed tomography (μCT) scanning., Methods: Nineteen permanent mandibular first molars with radix were scanned in a μCT device to evaluate their morphology with respect to root length, root curvature direction, location of radix, apical foramen, accessory canals and apical deltas, and distance between canal orifices as well as 2- and 3-dimensional parameters of the canals (number, area, roundness, major/minor diameter, volume, surface area, and structure model index). Quantitative data were analyzed by 1-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test (α = 0.05)., Results: The mean length of the mesial, distal, and radix roots was 20.36 ± 1.73 mm, 20.0 ± 1.83 mm, and 18.09 ± 1.68 mm, respectively. The radix was located distolingually (n = 16), mesiolingually (n = 1), and distobuccally (n = 2). In a proximal view, most radix roots had a severe curvature with buccal orientation and a buccally displaced apical foramen. The spatial configuration of the canal orifices on the pulp chamber floor was mostly in a trapezoidal shape. The radix root canal orifice was usually covered by a dentinal projection. The radix differed significantly from the mesial and distal roots for all evaluated 3-dimensional parameters (P < .05). The radix canal had a more circular shape in the apical third, and the mean size of the minor diameter 1 mm short of the foramen was 0.25 ± 0.10 mm., Conclusions: The radix root is an important and challenging anatomic variation of mandibular first molars, which usually has a severe curvature with a predominantly distolingual location, and a narrow root canal with difficult access., (Copyright © 2014 American Association of Endodontists. Introduction: This study compared the bond strength, interfacial ultrastructure, and tag penetration of resin-based sealers applied to smear-free radicular dentin using 70% isopropyl alcohol as the active final rinse., Methods: Eighty root canals were prepared and assigned to 2 groups (n = 40) according to the drying protocol: paper points or 70% isopropyl alcohol. Then, roots were divided into 4 subgroups (n = 10) with respect to the sealer and obturation material: AH Plus (Dentsply De Trey GmbH, Konstanz, Germany) and gutta-percha (AH/GP), Hybrid Root SEAL (Sun Medical, Tokyo, Japan) and gutta-percha (HR/GP), Epiphany SE (Pentron Clinical Technologies, Wallingford, CT) and gutta-percha (EP/GP), and Epiphany SE and Resilon (EP/RS). Roots were sectioned, and the push-out test was performed. Failure modes were examined under stereomicroscopy and sealer penetration into the dentinal tubules under scanning electron microscopy. Data were statistically analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance post hoc Tukey tests with a significant level of 5%., Results: Overall, canals dried with isopropyl alcohol showed significantly higher bond strength values (2.11 ± 1.74 MPa) than with paper points (1.81 ± 1.73 MPa) (P < .05). The HR/GP group showed lower bond strength than the AH/GP group (P < .05) but higher than the EP/GP and EP/RS groups (P < .05). The most frequent type of failure was cohesive in the AH/GP and HR/GP groups and adhesive in the EP/GP and EP/RS groups. Scanning electron microscopic evaluation revealed better adaptation of the adhesive interface in the AH/GP and HR/GP groups in comparison with the EP/GP and EP/RS groups., Conclusions: A final rinse with EDTA and 70% isopropyl alcohol improved the bond strength and penetration of the sealers into dentinal tubules of the root., (Copyright © 2014 American Association of Endodontists. Introduction: This study aimed to describe the anatomy of mandibular central and lateral incisors using micro-computed tomographic imaging., Methods: One hundred mandibular incisors were scanned in a micro-computed tomographic device using an isotropic resolution of 22.9 μm. The anatomy of each tooth (length of the roots, presence and location of accessory canals and apical deltas, and number of canals) as well as the 2- and 3-dimensional morphologic aspects of the canal (area, roundness, diameter, volume, surface area, and structure model index) were evaluated. Data were statistically compared using the Student t test (alpha = 0.05)., Results: The mean lengths of the mandibular central and lateral incisors were 20.71 and 21.56 mm, respectively. Most of the central (60%) and lateral (74%) incisors had no accessory canals. An apical delta was observed in only 1 specimen. The cross-section analysis of the apical third showed the presence of 1, 2, or 3 canal orifices. No statistical difference was observed in the comparison of the 2- and 3-dimensional morphologic parameters between central and lateral incisors (P < .05). The qualitative analyses of the 3-dimensional models of the root canal systems of the central and lateral incisor teeth confirm that the most prevalent configurations were Vertucci's types I (50% and 62%, respectively) and III (28%)., Conclusions: Overall, mandibular central and lateral incisors were similar in terms of the 2- and 3-dimensional analyzed parameters. Introduction: This study evaluated dentin morphology and microhardness at the furcation area of mandibular molars., Methods: Tooth segments of mandibular molars were embedded in resin blocks and bisected longitudinally (n = 20), and the furcation area was delimited by tracing 2 orthogonal lines from the most concave point of the outer surface of the furcation toward the mesial and distal canal entrances. In half of the specimens, Knoop microhardness was measured in 2 directions in the furcation area: vertically, parallel to the orthogonal lines and the bisector of the angle formed by them; and horizontally, in the outer (close to the pulp chamber floor), inner (close to the cementum), and middle dentin layers. Data were analyzed statistically by one-way analysis of variance and Tukey-Kramer test (α = 0.05). The other half of the specimens were examined by scanning electron microscopy to evaluate dentin morphology and trajectory of the tubules., Results: No statistically significant difference (P > .05) was found among the mesial (46.5 ± 6.4), central (47.3 ± 8.1), and distal (49.7 ± 6.5) orthogonal lines. The inner dentin layer (51.7 ± 2.5) was statistically similar to the middle (46.3 ± 2.9) (P > .05), which was similar to the outer layer (41.4 ± 2.4) (P > .05). The inner layer was significantly harder than the outer layer (P < .05). The morphologic analysis revealed a tendency of calcification of the tubules from the outer toward the inner layer., Conclusions: Dentin microhardness at the furcation area is uniform in its 3 vertical axes, but the inner dentin layer is harder than the outer layer. Introduction: The newly developed single-file systems claimed to be able to prepare the root canal space with only 1 instrument. The present study was designed to test the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the preparation of oval-shaped root canals using single- or multiple-file systems., Methods: Seventy-two single-rooted mandibular canines were matched based on similar morphologic dimensions of the root canal achieved in a micro-computed tomographic evaluation and assigned to 1 of 4 experimental groups (n = 18) according to the preparation technique (ie, Self-Adjusting File [ReDent-Nova, Ra'anana, Israel], WaveOne [Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland], Reciproc [VDW, Munich, Germany], and ProTaper Universal [Dentsply Maillefer] systems). Changes in the 2- and 3-dimensional geometric parameters were compared with preoperative values using analysis of variance and the post hoc Tukey test between groups and the paired sample t test within groups (α = 0.05)., Results: Preparation significantly increased the analyzed parameters; the outline of the canals was larger and showed a smooth taper in all groups. Untouched areas occurred mainly on the lingual side of the middle third of the canal. Overall, a comparison between groups revealed that SAF presented the lowest, whereas WaveOne and ProTaper Universal showed the highest mean increase in most of the analyzed parameters (P < .05)., Conclusions: All systems performed similarly in terms of the amount of touched dentin walls. Introduction: Chlorhexidine (CHX) is likely to decompose into reactive by-products. This study evaluated the generation of 4-chloroaniline (pCA), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and 1-chloro-4-nitrobenzene in high concentrations of CHX and in a mixture of CHX and calcium hydroxide at different time points., Methods: A gas chromatography method was developed to detect pCA and CHX by-products. Mass spectroscopy was used to elucidate the structure of compounds. The samples, which were kept at 36.5°C and 95% relative humidity during the study, were analyzed immediately and 7 days after preparation., Results: pCA was detected in the 2% CHX solution and in the mixture of CHX and calcium hydroxide at all time points. pCA concentrations increased after storing under those conditions. The 2% CHX solution alone and the mixture of CHX and calcium hydroxide released ROS at all time points, but 1-chloro-4-nitrobenzene was not found., Conclusions: pCA and ROS were identified as by-products of the 2% CHX aqueous solution alone and as ointment base of calcium hydroxide paste., (Copyright © 2013 American Association of Endodontists. Introduction: Cleaning and shaping of root canals are essential steps for the success of endodontic therapy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tissue debridement efficacy of the self-adjusting file (SAF) protocol in the apical third of oval-shaped canals of mandibular incisors in comparison with a nickel-titanium rotary system preparation., Methods: Twenty-six single-rooted human mandibular incisor teeth were selected and assigned to a control (n = 4) and 2 experimental groups (n = 11) according to 1 of 2 instrumentation techniques, SAF and nickel-titanium rotary systems. After root canal preparation, the apical thirds of the specimens were submitted to histologic processing and analyzed by optical microscopy regarding the percentage of debris and uninstrumented root canal walls. The data were statistically compared by using unpaired t test with Welch's correction, and the level of significance was set at 5%., Results: The percentage of remaining debris and uninstrumented canal perimeter was significantly lower in SAF group (2.18 ± 2.71 and 12.33 ± 7.85, respectively) than in rotary group (13.11 ± 12.98 and 53.54 ± 15.95, respectively) (P < .05). In the SAF group most of specimens were completely free of debris, whereas in the rotary group 53% of the canals presented debris., Conclusions: SAF had significantly more contact to the dentin walls and removed more debris than rotary instrumentation in the apical third of mandibular incisors., (Copyright © 2013 American Association of Endodontists. Introduction: This study examined the anatomy of 4-rooted maxillary second molars by using micro-computed tomography., Methods: Twenty-five 4-rooted maxillary second molars were scanned to evaluate the size and curvature of the roots; the distance and spatial configuration between some anatomical landmarks; the number of root canals and the position of apical foramina; the occurrence of fusion of roots and enamel pearls; the configuration of the canal at the apical third; the cross-sectional appearance, the volume, and surface area of the root canals. Data were compared by using analysis of variance post hoc Tukey test (α = 0.05)., Results: The specimens were classified as types I (n = 16), II (n = 7), and III (n = 2). The size of the roots was similar (P > .05), and most of them presented straight with 1 canal, except the mesiobuccal that showed 2 canals in 24% of the samples. The configuration of the pulp chamber was mostly irregular quadrilateral-shaped. The lowest mean distance of the orifices was observed between the buccal roots (P < .05). Accessory canals were present mostly in the apical third. Location of the apical foramina varied considerably. Fusion of roots and enamel pearls occurred in 44% and 8% of the samples, respectively. Mean distance from the pulp chamber floor to the furcation was 2.15 ± 0.57 mm. No statistical differences were found in the bi-dimensional and 3-dimensional analyses (P > .05)., Conclusions: All analyzed parameters showed differences between roots, except for the length of the roots, the configuration of the canals at the apical third, cross-sectional appearance, volume, and surface area of the canals., (Copyright © 2012 American Association of Endodontists. Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the root canal preparation in flat-oval canals treated with either rotary or self-adjusting file (SAF) by using micro-tomography analysis., Methods: Forty mandibular incisors were scanned before and after root canal instrumentation with rotary instruments (n = 20) or SAF (n = 20). Changes in canal volume, surface area, and cross-sectional geometry were compared with preoperative values. Data were compared by independent sample t test and χ(2) test between groups and paired sample t test within the group (α = 0.05)., Results: Overall, area, perimeter, roundness, and major and minor diameters revealed no statistical difference between groups (P > .05). In the coronal third, percentage of prepared root canal walls and mean increases of volume and area were significantly higher with SAF (92.0%, 1.44 ± 0.49 mm(3), 0.40 ± 0.14 mm(2), respectively) than rotary instrumentation (62.0%, 0.81 ± 0.45 mm(3), 0.23 ± 0.15 mm(2), respectively) (P < .05). SAF removed dentin layer from all around the canal, whereas rotary instrumentation showed substantial untouched areas., Conclusions: In the coronal third, mean increases of area and volume of the canal as well as the percentage of prepared walls were significantly higher with SAF than with rotary instrumentation. By using SAF instruments, flat-oval canals were homogenously and circumferentially prepared. The size of the SAF preparation in the apical third of the canal was equivalent to those prepared with #40 rotary file with a 0.02 taper., (Copyright © 2011 American Association of Endodontists. Objective: This article discusses the relationship between apical limit of root canal filling and success on endodontic treatment of a mandibular molar., Study Design: A mandibular right first molar with vital pulp was endodontically treated, and 3 years later periapical lesions on mesial and distal roots were detected. The canals were retreated and obturated to the same levels as in the previous treatment., Results: An 8-year radiographic follow-up showed repair of the periapical lesions on both roots., Conclusions: Results suggest that the apical limit of obturation seems to have no influence in the repair of periapical tissues in mandibular molars., (Copyright © 2011 Mosby, Inc. Introduction: A common complication during the restoration of severely destroyed teeth is the loss of coronal root dentine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different sealers on the bonding interface of weakened roots reinforced with resin and fiber posts., Methods: Sixty extracted maxillary canines were used. The crowns were removed, and the thickness of root dentine was reduced in the experimental (n = 40) and positive control (n = 10) groups. The specimens of experimental group were assigned to four subgroups (n = 10) according to the filling material: gutta-percha + Grossmann's sealer, gutta-percha + AH Plus (Dentsply De Trey Gmbh, Konstanz, Germany), gutta-percha + Epiphany (Pentron Clinical Technologies, Wallingford, CT), and Resilon (Resilon Research LLC, Madison, CT) + Epiphany. In the negative control group (n = 10), canals were not filled. After post space preparation, the roots were restored with composite resin light-activated through a translucent fiber post. After 24 hours, specimens were transversally sectioned into 1-mm-thick slices. Push-out test and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analyses of different regions were performed. Data from push-out test were analyzed by using Tukey post hoc multiple comparison tests. The percentage of failure type was calculated. Data from SEM analysis were compared by Friedman and Kruskal-Wallis tests (α = 0.05)., Results: The mean bond strength was significantly higher in the negative control group as compared with the other groups (P < .05). In all groups, the most frequent type of failure was adhesive. Overall, apical and middle regions presented a lower density of resin tags than the coronal region (P < .05)., Conclusions: The push-out bond strength was not affected by sealer or region. Introduction: The greatest reduction in microhardness of the most superficial layer of dentin of the root canal lumen is desired. The use of chelating agents during biomechanical preparation of root canals removes smear layer, increasing the access of the irrigant into the dentin tubules to allow adequate disinfection, and also reduces dentin microhardness, facilitating the action of endodontic instruments. This study evaluated the effect of different chelating solutions on the microhardness of the most superficial dentin layer from the root canal lumen., Methods: Thirty-five recently extracted single-rooted maxillary central incisors were instrumented, and the roots were longitudinally sectioned in a mesiodistal direction to expose the entire canal extension. The specimens were distributed in seven groups according to the final irrigation: 15% EDTA, 10% citric acid, 5% malic acid, 5% acetic acid, apple vinegar, 10% sodium citrate, and control (no irrigation). A standardized volume of 50 μL of each chelating solution was used for 5 minutes. Dentin microhardness was measured with a Knoop indenter under a 10-g load and a 15-second dwell time. Data were analyzed statistically by one-way analysis of variance and Tukey-Kramer multiple-comparison test at 5% significance level., Results: EDTA and citric acid had the greatest overall effect, causing a sharp decrease in dentin microhardness without a significant difference (p > .05) from each other. However, both chelators differed significantly from the other solutions (p < .001). Sodium citrate and deionized water were similar to each other (p > .05) and did not affect dentin microhardness. Apple vinegar, acetic acid, and malic acid were similar to each other (p > .05) and presented intermediate results., Conclusion: Except for sodium citrate, all tested chelating solutions reduced microhardness of the most superficial root canal dentin layer. Purpose: To evaluate in vitro the solubility of the Epiphany endodontic filling material Epiphany (Pentron Clinical Technologies, Wallingford, CT) prepared with its resinous solvent., Methods: The specimens were prepared in the following experimental conditions: (1) GI, epiphany without photoactivation; (2) GII, Epiphany prepared with resinous solvent without photoactivation; (3) GIII, Epiphany followed by photoactivation; and (4) GIV, Epiphany prepared with resinous solvent followed by photoactivation. Ten specimens of each group were obtained from Teflon molds with 80% reduction in volume of the specimen's dimensions based on American National Standard Institute/American Dental Association (ANSI/ADA) Specification No. 57. The samples were weighted and immersed in distilled water for 7 days. After this period, they were removed, dried, and weighed again. Solubility was calculated by using samples weight loss (%). The immersion liquid was evaluated through atomic absorption spectrometry., Results: The sealers without photoactivation were statistically similar (p > 0.05) between themselves (GI = 6.93% and GII = 6.39%) and different from the uncured sealers, which were statistically different between themselves (p < 0.05) (GIII = 3.56% and GIV = 0.47%). Only the Epiphany sealer prepared with resinous solvent followed by photoactivation presented solubility values within ANSI/ADA requirements, liberating the following amounts of ions: 114.43 microg of Ca(2+)/mL, 2.4 microg of Mg(2+)/mL, 0.33 microg of Fe(2+)/mL, 0.11 microg of Zn(2+)/mL, 1.31 microg of Ni(2+)/mL, and 7.1 microg of Na(+)/mL., Conclusion: The association of resinous solvent to the Epiphany sealer followed by photoactivation resulted in a filling material with low solubility and expressive liberation of calcium ions.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentration of calcium ions and smear layer removal by using root canal chelators according to flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and scanning electron microscopy. Forty-two human maxillary central incisors were irrigated with 15% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), 10% citric acid, 10% sodium citrate, apple vinegar, 5% acetic acid, 5% malic acid, and sodium hypochlorite. The concentration of calcium ions was measured by using flame atomic absorption spectrometry, and smear layer removal was determined by scanning electron microscopy. Mean +/- standard deviation, one-way analysis of variance, Tukey-Kramer, Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn, and kappa tests were used for statistical analysis. The use of 15% EDTA resulted in the greatest concentration of calcium ions followed by 10% citric acid; 15% EDTA and 10% citric acid were the most efficient solutions for removal of smear layer.

The aim of this study was to determine whether para-chloroaniline (PCA) and/or reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated by chlorhexidine (CHX) alone or after CHX is mixed with calcium hydroxide at different time points. Mass spectrometry was performed to detect PCA in samples of 0.2% CHX and Ca(OH)2 mixed with 0.2% CHX. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to confirm the presence of CHX in the mixture with Ca(OH)2. The samples were analyzed immediately after mixing and after 7 and 14 days. During the intervals of the experiment, the samples were maintained at 36.5 degrees C and 95% relative humidity. PCA was detected in the 0.2% CHX solution after 14 days. The mixture of CHX with Ca(OH)2 liberated ROS at all time points, but no traces of CHX were present in the mixture as a result of immediate degradation of the CHX.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new periapical index based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for identification of apical periodontitis (AP). The periapical index proposed in this study (CBCTPAI) was developed on the basis of criteria established from measurements corresponding to periapical radiolucency interpreted on CBCT scans. Radiolucent images suggestive of periapical lesions were measured by using the working tools of Planimp software on CBCT scans in 3 dimensions: buccopalatal, mesiodistal, and diagonal. The CBCTPAI was determined by the largest lesion extension. A 6-point (0-5) scoring system was used with 2 additional variables, expansion of cortical bone and destruction of cortical bone. A total of 1014 images (periapical radiographs and CBCT scans) originally taken from 596 patients were evaluated by 3 observers by using the CBCTPAI criteria. AP was identified in 39.5% and 60.9% of cases by radiography and CBCT, respectively (P < .01). The CBCTPAI offers an accurate diagnostic method for use with high-resolution images, which can reduce the incidence of false-negative diagnosis, minimize observer interference, and increase the reliability of epidemiologic studies, especially those referring to AP prevalence and severity.

This study evaluated the effect of 980-nm diode laser at different parameters on root canal dentin permeability associated with different irrigants. Seventy-five canines were sectioned at 15 mm from the apex, prepared mechanically up to #40 .02 instrument, and irrigated with 2 mL distilled water. Final irrigation (10 mL) was used as follows: (1) distilled water; (2) 1% NaOCl; (3) 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid + a cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (EDTAC). Laser was applied at 1.5 or 3.0 W as either continuous wave or pulsed wave (100 Hz). The teeth were then processed histochemically, the percentage of copper ion penetration into the dentin of the canal walls was counted, and the data were analyzed statistically with the Tukey-Kramer test (alpha < .01). When laser was associated with water, an increase in permeability was found, whereas permeability decreased when associated with EDTAC. Dentin permeability after laser irradiation was directly dependent on the solution used for final irrigation.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate in vitro the effect of Er:YAG laser on bonding to enamel, varying the irradiation distance., Method: Tensile bond strength of an adhesive restorative system to non-irradiated and irradiated enamel surfaces was evaluated. Thirty caries-free human third molars were sectioned in mesio-distal direction and embedded in acrylic resin. Enamel was flattened, and a 3-mm-diameter bonding area was demarcated. Specimens were randomly assigned into six groups: groups I-V were treated with the Er:YAG laser (80 mJ/2 Hz), varying the irradiation distance (11, 12 mm-focused, 14, 16 and 17 mm, respectively), followed by 35% phosphoric acid etching. Control group (VI) received treatment with phosphoric acid alone. Single Bond adhesive system was applied on the conditioned enamel, and composite resin cones, bonded to enamel, were fabricated with Z250. After storage, samples were tested in tensile to failure (50 kgf and 0.5 mm/min)., Results: Means in MPa were: I-9.67 (+/-3.44); II-13.29 (+/-2.65); III-13.33 (+/-2.22); IV-14.87 (+/-3.58); V-16.43 (+/-4.52); VI-22.90 (+/-3.03). ANOVA and Tukey test revealed statistically significant decrease of bond strength in group I (P < 0.05). Groups II-IV presented similar results, as did groups IV and V. Control group (VI) yielded the best overall performance (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Er:YAG laser irradiation adversely affected adhesion to enamel. However, bond strength was influenced by the irradiation distance, thus being stronger with the increase of distance to the target tissue.

Objective: To evaluate coronal microleakage in filled root canals that received different biomechanical preparations and application of liquid adhesives over the root filling and the pulp chamber walls., Study Design: Root canals of 94 extracted canine teeth were filled after being biomechanically prepared with 1% sodium hypochlorite and divided into 3 groups. In 2 groups attempts were made to remove the smear layer with either 17% EDTA or Er:YAG laser irradiation (10 Hz, 250 mJ input, 112 mJ output). Liquid adhesive (Super Bonder and Single Bond adhesive) was applied and the teeth were immersed for 90 days in India ink., Results: Statistically significant differences were found for the different preparations, the use of liquid adhesives, and the different liquid adhesives. The use of Er:YAG laser, EDTA, and the liquid adhesive reduced coronal microleakage (P < .01)., Conclusions: Because of the risk of coronal microleakage, endodontically treated teeth should be restored as quickly as possible.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the tensile resistance of a flowable resin in different dentin depths, after superficial treatment with Er:YAG laser., Methods: Eighteen molars were selected and roots were removed. Crowns were bisected in half, embedded in polyester resin and ground until dentin was exposed. The bonding site was delimited and samples were randomly assigned into two groups: superficial dentin (SD--1 mm from amelodentinal junction) and deep dentin (DD--2 mm from amelodentinal junction). The samples were subdivided in three groups according to superficial treatment: non-rinsing conditioner (NRC) solely; Er:YAG laser (80 mJ/2 Hz)+NRC; Er:YAG laser solely. After conditioning, Prime and Bond NT/Dyract flow (Dentsply) was used for the manufacture of specimens. They were adapted to a metallic device, where resin cones were prepared. Samples were stored for 24 h and subjected to a bond strength test (50 kgf at 0.5 mm/min)., Results: Means in MPa were: SD-NRC solely 12.29 (+/-4.40); laser+NRC 12.11(+/-3.23); laser solely 5.74(+/-3.01) and DD-NRC solely 9.60 (+/-3.13); laser+NRC 10.44(+/-2.23); laser solely 3.50(+/-1.70). Data were submitted to statistical analysis by ANOVA and Scheffé test (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: SD produced better results and tensile bond strength, while on DD the treatment with NRC or Laser+NRC had higher tensile bond strength. The results suggest that when Er:YAG laser for dentin treatment is used, it is mandatory to associate it to a conditioning agent.
