In intertidal areas, oyster farming creates a crosshatching pattern between oyster tables and aisles. Tables provide a refuge from the current and solar irradiance and the oysters facilitate the accumulation of OM, thereby structuring the spatial organization of the associated macrozoobenthic community at mesoscale. The aim of this study was to describe the quality of the oyster table environment at small scale and the response of the macrozoobenthic community to OsHV-1 μvar oyster mortality. The species assemblage was dominated by Golfingia vulgaris, Tubificoides benedii, Capitella capitata and Scoloplos armiger. The table habitat appeared to be in a bad ecological state throughout the 2-month survey (May and June 2017), whereas in the aisle, eutrophication occurred lately and was clearly related to be due to the massive stranding of dead seaweed at the end of the survey (in early July). So, this disturbance of the species assemblage seemed to occur in two phases: 1) after oyster spat mortality and 2) after seaweed stranding resulted in a bad ecological status, as revealed by macrofaunal indicators. Large quantities of OsHV-1 DNA were also found in some species, including small crabs and amphipods, one week after the mortality crisis, but there is no apparent virus reservoir found in the benthic species., (Copyright © 2021. Intramuscular connective tissue (IMCT) is mainly composed of several fibrils (known as total collagen (TCol)) linked between each other by different chemical cross-links (CLs), the whole being embedded in a matrix of proteoglycans (PGs). In the field of beef quality, there is limited information on the role of CLs and PGs. Accordingly, several authors suggest that, to investigate the role of IMCT, it is important to investigate them just like TCol and insoluble collagen (ICol). In muscle, there are two other components, the muscle fibres and intramuscular fat (IMF) content. There are limited data on the relationships between these three components of muscle and then on possibility to independently manipulate these characteristics in order to control the final quality of meat. The present study aimed to investigate whether consistent relationships exist between these different components of muscle. Therefore, the present study compared four muscles of two cattle types (dairy and beef) to determine associations between TCol, ICol, CLs and PGs. Data were analysed across and within muscle (M) and animal type (AT) based on residuals. There was a strong M and AT effect for all muscle characteristics and an interaction M × AT for type I muscle fibres and IMF. Correlations between TCol, ICol and their CLs were M- and AT-independent. Total proteoglycans were positively correlated with TCol and ICol in a muscle-dependent manner irrespective of AT, but no correlation was found with CLs. On the contrary, CLs were negatively correlated with the ratio TPGs : TCol in an M-dependent manner, irrespective of AT. TCol, ICol and CLs were positively and negatively correlated with type IIA and IIB+X muscle fibres only in longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle, regardless the AT. Insoluble collagen was the only parameter of IMCT to be correlated with type I muscle fibres but only in LT muscle, irrespective of AT. There was no correlation between PGs and muscle fibre types, but PGs were the only IMCT component to be related with IMF in an M-dependent manner, irrespective of AT. Finally, there was no correlation between muscle fibre types and IMF content within M and AT. This study revealed that there is a strong relationship between IMCT components irrespective of M, an M-dependent relationship between the IMCT components and muscle fibre types and few (only with PGs) or no relationship between IMF and IMCT and muscle fibres.

The aim of this study was to compare visible-near-infrared spectroscopy (VIS/NIRS) models developed from fresh or freeze-dried samples for predicting the fatty acid (FA) composition of beef samples. The hypothesis tested is that the removal of water from samples could improve the VIS/NIRS model performance. A total of 454 beef samples obtained from different bovine muscles were used. No significant differences were found in the performance of VIS/NIRS models developed from fresh or freeze-dried samples for predicting both major individual FAs and families of FAs and for some FAs (16:0, 18:0, 18:1 n-9, 18:2 n-6, 20:4 n-6, 22:5 n-3, 22:6 n-3, saturated, mono-unsaturated FA, and total n-3 long chain poly-unsaturated FAs (PUFA)). In contrast, the standard error of predictions for total PUFAs, total n-3 PUFAs, total conjugated linoleic acid, 20:5 n-3, and 18:3 n-3 were improved (by 21% on average; P < .05) in freeze-dried samples compared with fresh samples., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas suffers from chronic or sporadic mortality outbreaks worldwide, resulting from infectious diseases and/or physiological disorders triggered by environmental factors. Since 2008, ostreid herpesvirus OsHV-1 μVar has been identified as the main agent responsible for mass mortality of juvenile oysters in Europe. Previous studies of genome-wide expression profiling have provided candidate genes that potentially contribute to genetically-based resistance to summer mortality. To assess their value in determining resistance to the juvenile mass mortality that has occurred in France since 2008, we analyzed the expression of 17 candidate genes in an experimental infection by OsHV-1 μVar, and in an in vivo field experiment. Individual quantification of mRNA levels of 10 out of the 17 targeted genes revealed significant variation, of which 7 genes were showed differences between conditions that created significant differences in mortality, and 6 depended on the number of OsHV-1 genome copies individually quantified in mantle tissue. Complex SOD metalloenzymes known to be part of the antioxidant defense strategies may at least partly determine susceptibility or resistance to OsHV-1-associated mortality. Furthermore, inhibitor 2 of NF-κB, termed CgIκB2, exhibited highly significant variation of mRNA levels depending on OsHV-1 load in both experiments, suggesting its implication in the antiviral immune response of C. gigas. Our results suggest that CgIκB2 expression would make a good starting point for further functional research and that it could be used in marker-assisted selection., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Eighty eight lambs were used in a 2×2 factorial arrangement 1) to investigate the effect of maternal dietary linseed supplementation and/or lamb linseed supplemented concentrate on growth performance, carcass fat quality and fatty acid (FA) composition of muscle and dorsal adipose tissue of indoor lambs 2) to study the relationships between subcutaneous fat quality and FA composition. Feeding linseed to ewes increased C18:3 n-3 (ALA) proportion in milk and therefore the ALA supply to suckling lambs. However, ALA and n-3 polyunsaturated FA (n-3 PUFA) proportions in lamb tissues were not affected. Feeding linseed to lambs during the post-weaning period significantly increased the proportions of ALA and n-3 PUFA in tissues. Softer and more colored fat was associated with a decrease in even medium-chain saturated FA and increases in odd and methyl FA proportions but not with ALA proportion in subcutaneous adipose tissue., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The authors report a case of acute type-B aortic dissection in association with an unknown isthmic coarctation in a 30-year-old adult. Successful surgical repair was performed 6 months later without cardiopulmonary bypass. Physiopathological aspects and surgical strategy are discussed. Acute aortic dissection distal to isthmic coarctation is extremely rare and has been reported in only 5 other cases. Background: Secondary prevention is a key strategy for reducing levels of coronary heart disease, but a gap between guidelines and practice remains., Objectives: The aim of this double-part survey was to evaluate the improvement in secondary prevention one year after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in real life, between 1999 and 2005, with respect to the change in guidelines., Methods: Two surveys of almost similar design were performed in 1999 and 2005-2006. In each survey, unselected consecutive patients suffering from ACS (n=112 hospitalized in 1998, and n=110 in 2004) were evaluated at admission, and one year after hospitalization, for the risk factors, lifestyle, and achievement of therapeutic goals recommended by the most recent guidelines. Follow-up (FU) data were obtained by mail and phone contact with patient, general practitioner and cardiologist, and medical laboratory when appropriate., Results: At 1-year FU (n=192 survivors with FU), smoking cessation (87% in 1999 versus 89% in 2005) and obesity (13% versus 19%, respectively) did not vary significantly. Blood pressure was controlled (< 140/90 mmHg, excepted in diabetics in 2005 with less than 130/80 mmHg) in 65% versus 80% (p<0.03). The rate of patients with no or controlled diabetes mellitus decreased from 1999 to 2005 (90% versus 76%), despite more intensive treatment (insulin in 1% versus 20%).The goals for LDL cholesterol were achieved in 47% of patients in 1999 (< 3.4 mmol/L) and in 76% in 2005 (< 2.6 mmol/L) (p<0.0001). Goals for triglycerides were achieved in 86% in 1999 (< 2g/L), and in 80% in 2005 (< 1.5 g/L) (NS). Besides, 63% of patients received an hypolipemic drug in 1999 (a statin in 59%) and 91% in 2005 (a statin in 88%). Mean number of controlled risk factors was 3.96+/-1.52 in 1999 versus 4.94+/-1.83 in 2005, and prevalence of pts with more than five controlled risk factors at one year FU increased from 15 to 44% (p<0.0001)., Conclusions: These results, drawn from unselected consecutive patients managed in real life, demonstrate an improvement in secondary prevention one year after ACS, between 1999 and 2005, despite strengthened guidelines for blood pressure, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels. Control of obesity and diabetes remains unoptimal.

The effects of linseed content in concentrates on the fatty acid (FA) composition of adipose tissues and muscles of lambs were studied in a 2×4 design: males (M) vs. females (F) and linseed content (0%, L0, 3%, L3, 6%, L6, 9%, L9). FA proportions were determined both on a DB-wax and on a CP-Sil column in perirenal (PR), dorsal subcutaneous (SC) adipose tissue and in longissusmus dorsi muscle (IM). No effects of linseed contents in the diet on growth performances either in male or female lambs were observed. Linseed supplementation tended to decrease the fatness score. The proportion of linolenic acid increased linearly with the linseed content in the diet, from: 0.6, 0.5, and 0.5% for L0 to 1.9, 1.6, and 1.3% for L9, in PR, SC and IM, respectively. The increase in n-3 PUFA and in total PUFA was similar to that of linolenic acid. The n-6:n-3 ratio decreased from 5.7, 5.3 and 5.8 for L0 to 1.8, 1.7 and 2.7 for L9, in PR, SC and IM, respectively. There was no change in the proportion of docosahexaenoic acid with linseed supplementation. The proportions of C18:1trans-10 and C18:1trans-11 did not vary in PR, SC and IM with linseed supplementation. The total proportion of trans-octadecenoic acid was high in each tissue type and group of lambs. C18:1trans-10 represented about half of the total trans-octadecenoic isomers. With an increase in linolenic acid, most cis- and trans-octadecenoic isomers also increased, but trans-10 and trans-11 isomers did not and cis-9 and cis-11 isomers decreased. With linseed supplementation there was a decrease in the Δ9 desaturase indices in SC.

If doctor-patient communication is a frequent subject of research, couples communication where one partner has cancer is quite recent. Some studies deal with couples communication, but from an anecdotic perspective, without any operational measure. The aim of this paper is to study couples' communication frequency and link it to depressive symptomatology. Marital communication was assessed with three scales: frequency of general communication, frequency of communication about cancer and satisfaction with communication. About one month following surgery, 120 breast cancer patients were interviewed; only 11 partners (9%) refused to be interviewed. Results show less communication is associated with higher depressive level. Patients and partners with a passable level of communication, particularly about cancer, are clinically at risk for depression. Communicating frequently about cancer in the couple seems thus associated with a positive effect, i.e. a depressive level found in the general population. Direction of causality between frequency of marital communication and depressive symptomatology cannot be established from this study., (Copyright John Libbey Eurotext 2003.)

Objective: To explore whether developmental status of neurotransmitter systems may affect response to antidepressant treatment. This study investigated whether younger animals, compared with mature animals, showed the same neuroendocrine response to challenge drug probes when pretreated with a serotonergic or noradrenergic antidepressant., Method: Prepubertal, pubertal, and adult rats were pretreated with low- or high-dose sertraline or desipramine for 14 days. Animals were then challenged with a noradrenergic probe (clonidine for desipramine-treated animals) or a serotonergic probe (fenfluramine for sertraline-treated animals). The neurohormonal response of growth hormone to the clonidine challenge and prolactin to the fenfluramine challenge was then measured., Results: In animals challenged with fenfluramine, the postpubertal control group showed a significantly higher prolactin response to fenfluramine than postpubertal animals pretreated with low- or high-dose sertraline. No differences were found in the pubertal or prepubertal group. In animals challenged with clonidine, there was a significant age by treatment interaction effect for the prepubertal group pretreated with high doses of desipramine (less growth hormone secretion) but not for the peri- or postpubertal groups., Conclusions: These data indicate neurodevelopmental factors may play a role in the functional physiology of neurotransmitter systems, which in turn may affect response to psychotropics.

The aim of the present work was to study the relationships between lamb growth performance, soft adipose tissue and fatty acid composition of subcutaneous adipose tissue of intensively reared lambs, and to determine if the occurrence of soft fat, and of odd numbered (Odd FA) and methyl-branched-chain fatty acids in subcutaneous adipose tissue was related to plasma concentrations of methylmalonic acid (MMA). For this purpose, a sensitive gas chromatography assay to measure low plasma concentrations of MMA was developed and validated. In all, 49 male lambs were reared from 23.6 to 41.0kg. They were fed ad libitum with hay and pelleted concentrates containing either cereals (80%, C) or sugar beet pulp (70%, BP). Plasma concentrations of MMA were measured 12 days before slaughter. Softness score and fatty acid compositions of caudal adipose tissue were determined after slaughter. At the end of the trial, 75% of the carcasses had soft adipose tissue. The occurrence of soft fat appears to be related to high metabolisable energy intake per kg body weight. Soft fat was characterised by a higher water content, a lower proportion of saturated even-numbered fatty acids and higher proportions of Odd FA and methyl-branched-chain fatty acids in caudal adipose tissue, compared to firm fat. Despite high proportions of Odd FA and branched-chain fatty acids in caudal adipose tissue, plasma concentrations of MMA were low (2.02+/-1.98&mgr;mol/l). No clear relationships between MMA concentrations and soft fat or the proportions of branched-chain fatty acids other than the Iso and Anteiso acids was observed. It was concluded that the present study does not support the hypothesis that the liver's capacity to metabolise MMA was exceeded.

In recent years, thanks to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of congestive heart failure and progress made in the pharmacology of cardiovascular drugs, new therapeutics have been advocated in the treatment of congestive heart failure. Among them, converting enzyme inhibitors are the most useful. However, the classical association of digoxin-furosemide and general measures remains a very effective first-choice treatment in most cases. Only in particular situations, such as cardiomyopathy and decompensated atrio-ventricular insufficiency, should priority be given to converting enzyme inhibitors. Phosphodiesterase inhibitors are essentially used within the context of post-cardiac surgery intensive care. Beta-blockers which have been recently proposed for treatment of adult patients must not be used, as there is still no data available on their effectiveness and tolerance in pediatric patients.

Children with complex cardiac anomalies do not always receive corrective surgery and remain susceptible to serious events, especially infectious endocarditis, brain abscesses, anoxic spells and ischaemic cerebral accidents. Many of these complications could be avoided by careful management.

Based on 11 personal cases a large review of the literature (188 cases), the authors studied the frequency and types of cardiac anomalies in Di George syndrome. A cardiac anomaly was found in 86% of published cases. Interrupted aortic arch (27%), truncus arteriosus (27%) and tetralogy of Fallot (22%) are the most frequent anomalies. Interrupted aortic arch and truncus arteriosus, being rare congenital heart diseases, their discovery in a neonate must lead to a systematic search for Di George syndrome.

Retrospective studies have been conducted in Lyon (33 patients) and Montreal (24 patients) in order to compare the results of transventricular valvotomy (TVV, 20 cases) and aortic valvotomy with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB, 37 cases) in neonatal critical aortic stenosis. Clinical, echocardiographic, catheterization and operative data were analyzed in order to determine prognostic factors. Mortality rate was 59%: 30/34 perioperative deaths in the first month, and 4 late deaths after a reintervention for severe residual obstruction. Long term follow up was available for 23 patients (41%) for a 2 to 16 year period (mean 7.5). Five patients (7%) required a reintervention six years after the initial operation. Two of them required valve replacement. Eighteen patients (31%) surviving the initial operation, displayed a satisfactory result, being free of symptoms, endocarditis, reoperation and sudden death. Factors that influenced the outcome included severe heart failure, a left ventricular end-diastolic diameter below 14 mm, an aortic valve annulus below 8 mm, and a poor shortening fraction. Factors that did not influence the prognosis were age, pulmonary hypertension, and the anatomic type of the valve. Trans-aortic valvotomy with CPB was associated with a smaller operative mortality and a better long term result than TVV.

The authors discuss the percutaneous balloon dilatation procedure and the results obtained in 10 children (age range: 2.5-13 years) over a 2 year period (April 1986-April 1988). Six cases of coarctation restenosis were observed and good clinical and hemodynamic results were noted in 2 cases, while in 4 cases the procedure was not totally successful. For the 4 cases of stenosis of bioprosthetic valves in right ventricular-to-pulmonary arterial conduits, good results were obtained with a significant reduction of the trans-stenotic gradient from 50 to 23 mmHg. While long-term effectiveness of the procedure is still uncertain, those encouraging preliminary results suggest that this procedure could be considered as an alternative treatment for coarctation restenosis and stenosis of bioprosthetic valves in right ventricular to pulmonary artery conduits.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy technique and follow-up results of balloon valvuloplasty for congenital valvular pulmonary stenosis. Percutaneous dilatation was performed in 48 patients aged 0.5 to 21 years (m = 7.5 yrs) from two pediatric cardiology centers (Lyon and Montreal). The right ventricular peak systolic pressure ranged from 42 to 180 mmHg (m = 93) before dilatation and fell from 24 to 105 mmHg (m = 48) immediately after dilatation. The pulmonary valvular peak systolic pressure gradient ranged from 22 to 156 mmHg (m = 73) and fell to 4 to 70 mmHg (m = 27) after the procedure (P less than 0.001). Follow-up continuous doppler data was available from 33 patients at 1 to 37 months (m = 9.2 months) after dilatation. The maximal instantaneous gradient from right ventricle pulmonary artery ranged from 0 to 74 mmHg (m = 27).

We report the unexpected occurrence of a lethal arrythmia in an 11 month-old boy who presented varicella. The disorder was found to be a junctional ectopic tachycardia due to a zosterian myocarditis confirmed at autopsy. This exceptional association of varicella, myocarditis, and junctional ectopic tachycardia gives us the opportunity to discuss on the diagnosis and treatment of this uncommon and serious arrythmia (regular tachycardia with normal QRS morphology, ranging 200-250 per min, with atrioventricular dissociation or retrograde conduction to the atria).

One hundred eighteen patients who survived Mustard immunités (n = 103) or Senning operations (n = 15) performed between 1972 and 1984 for isolated transposition of the main arteries were followed-up for over a mean period of 3.67 yr (up to 12 yr). The authors have examined the potential complications which can alter the long-term prognosis in this type of atrial correction: heart rhythm disorders (regression of sinus rhythm of 3.82% yr), mechanical complications, haemodynamic dysfunction. After atrial correction the survival curve underwent an actuarial regression of 1.3% yr. All these potential complications should be detected by regular survey and may indicate anatomical correction, the results of which have yet to be fully evaluated.

Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) was administered to increase ductus patency in 26 neonates who present a cyanotic heart disease with right ventricular obstruction (1st group, 13 cases) or congestive heart failure with left ventricular outflow obstruction (2nd group, 13 cases). Clinical improvement occurred in all but the oldest infant in the first group. The efficacy of PGE1 is inconstant in the second group, but medical status was very poor before treatment. We could usually reduce the dose of PGE1 but in no case we could stop the drug before surgery. Surgery could be delayed several hours or days to get an hemodynamic and biologic satisfactory condition and even a few weeks until the infants and their pulmonary arteries had grown (1st group). Side effects are common but relatively minor.

Two cases of right pulmonary artery to left atrium in the newborn are described. Both patients presented with refractory hypoxemia cardiomegaly, hypovascular lung fields. Moreover one patient presented with continuous murmur and localised X-ray shadow. Echocardiographic left atrium enlargement suggested diagnosis and angiography confirmed it. Spontaneous improvement in one child is due to a decrease in pulmonary vascular resistance and has allowed the patient to attain an age and a weight in which surgical ligation has been performed more safely.

The subacute nephrotoxicity of more than 20 industrial solvents has been compared in female Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals were given 5 i.p. injections of the solvents per week for 2 weeks at doses ranging from 1/20 to 1/5 of the i.p. or oral LD50 and the urinary excretion of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase, beta 2-microglobulin and albumin was determined. Under these experimental conditions, two solvents, cyclohexane and styrene, were found to cause some tubular injury as evidenced by a statistically significant increase of beta 2-microglobulinuria. At the same dose, styrene was more tubulotoxic than cyclohexane but the opposite was observed when the solvents were administered proportionally to their LD50. The increased beta 2-microglobulinuria caused by cyclohexane was both time- and dose-dependent. It was not accompanied by changes in the glomerular filtration rate and the renal plasma flow, but at the highest dose (1.5 g/kg) the renal concentrating ability was depressed. These renal tubular effects can most likely be ascribed to cyclohexanol, the main metabolite of cyclohexane. As cyclohexane is a widely used industrial solvent with a relatively high threshold limit value (TWA-TLV: 300 ppm) it might represent an underestimated risk for the renal function of exposed populations.
