Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is one of the most widely used antibiotics to treat bacterial infections. Consequently, there is concern that it may contaminate water resources due to its high usage level. It is therefore necessary to monitor, trace, and reduce exposure to these antibiotic residues. In the current study, the extraction of CIP from water was performed using a green adsorbent material based on cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) decorated with mixed metal oxides (MMO). This cellulose/MMO/PVA adsorbent was synthesized using a simple sol-gel method. The prepared adsorbent materials were then characterized using a range of methods, including scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, gas adsorption analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier Transform infrared. The impact of pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, and CIP concentration on ciprofloxacin extraction were examined. The equilibrium and kinetic adsorption data were well described using the Freundlich model (R 2  = 0.965). The optimum conditions for CIP adsorption were: pH = 4.5; adsorbent dosage = 0.55 g·L -1 ; contact time = 83 min; and initial CIP concentration = 2 mg·L -1 . The adsorption capacity of the cellulose/MMO/PVA adsorbent for CIP removal was ∼19 mg·g -1 (CIP removal = 86.48 %). In the present study Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed as electronic databases were used to find work published up to October 27, 2020 about microplastics evaluation in conventional wastewater treatment plants. In total, 407 publications were found, of which 77 were eligible for meta-analysis. A comprehensive meta-analysis was undertaken to evaluate the relevant publications regarding microplastics abundance. The average microplastics abundance was within the 1-31,400, 0.2-12,580, 0.002-7863, and 0.003-447 items range per liter wastewater for influent, primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment steps, respectively. The difference between the abundance of microplastics characterization for the different treatment steps was analyzed using ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test (depending on the data distribution). According to the pooled data, the average microplastics abundance was 124.04, 20.67, 5.62, and 1.97 (items/l) for influent, primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment. Cytotoxic, or helper T cells recognize antigen via T cell receptors (TCRs) that can see their target antigen as short sequences of peptides bound to the groove of proteins of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I, and class II respectively. For MHC class II epitope selection from exogenous pathogens or self-antigens, participation of several accessory proteins, molecular chaperons, processing enzymes within multiple vesicular compartments is necessary. A major contributing factor is the MHC class II structure itself that uniquely offers a dynamic and flexible groove essential for epitope selection. While memory T-cells represent a hallmark of adaptive immunity, little is known about the genetic mechanisms regulating the longevity of memory CD4 T cells. Here, we studied the dynamics of gene expression in antigen specific CD4 T cells during infection, memory differentiation, and long-term survival up to nearly a year in mice. We observed that differentiation into long lived memory cells is associated with increased expression of genes inhibiting cell proliferation and apoptosis as well as genes promoting DNA repair response, lipid metabolism, and insulin resistance. We identified several transmembrane proteins in long-lived murine memory CD4 T cells, which co-localized exclusively within the responding antigen-specific memory CD4 T cells in human. The unique gene signatures of long-lived memory CD4 T cells, along with the new markers that we have defined, will enable a deeper understanding of memory CD4 T cell biology and allow for designing novel vaccines and therapeutics., (Published by Elsevier Inc.)

Successful activation of CD4 T cells is centered around the ability of antigen presenting cells to successfully process, select Class II immunodominant epitopes from exogenous antigens and to present it to cognate T cells. To achieve this, newly synthesized MHC-II molecules are transferred to a specialized compartment which contain both exogenous antigens and the Class II processing machinery. Here in a process known as 'editing,' the Class II accessory molecule DM (HLA-DM human; murine H2-M) facilitates the loading and selection of exogenous peptides to MHC class II molecules thereby assuring proper selection of immunodominant epitopes. A second Class II accessory molecule, DO (HLA-DO human; murine H2-O), mainly present in B cells and thymic epithelium also contributes to the selection of immunodominant epitopes. Yet, despite a wealth of mechanistic insights into how DM functions, understanding the contributions of DO to epitope selection has proven to be highly challenging. Daily exposure to environmental phenols can lead to potential undesirable effects on the health of pregnant women and fetuses. The present study is aimed to evaluate the relationship between maternal urinary concentrations of phenols in pregnancy and anthropometric birth outcomes. The studied population comprised of 189 pregnant women participating in the Tehran Environment and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (TEND) prospective cohort study, which had been ongoing since March 2016 in some hospitals and health care delivery centers in Tehran, Iran. Concentrations of bisphenol-A, triclosan, 4-nonylphenol, and parabens were determined in spot urine samples of pregnant mothers in the first trimester. Weight, length, and head circumference at birth were also extracted from the mothers' delivery files. Multivariable linear regression was used to examine the relationship between log-concentrations of phenols and birth outcomes. When we analyzed all samples regardless of neonates' gender, none of the urinary concentrations of phenols were associated with weight and length at birth. Indeed, in sex-stratified adjusted models, one log-unit increase of butylparaben was related to a 283.6 g (95% CI: 23, 544) increase in boys' birth weight. Prenatal urinary concentration of triclosan and propylparaben was respectively related to a decrease of 4.8 cm (95% C: -8.5, -1.1) in boys' length and 0.9 cm (95%CI: -1.8, -0.04) in girls' length. In the adjusted models for estimating the changes in head circumference, one log-unit increase of triclosan, methylparaben, and butylparaben led to a reduction of 1.6 cm (95% CI: -3.17, 0.03), increase of 0.8 cm (95% CI: -0.01, 1.6) and 0.7 cm (95% CI: 0.08, 1.4) in head circumference at birth respectively. Our results suggested that prenatal triclosan and parabens exposure might be associated with head circumference at birth. Furthermore, we observed a sexually dimorphic pattern between maternal triclosan and parabens exposure during pregnancy and fetal growth. Parabens are ubiquitous substances commonly used as preservatives because of their antibacterial activity. The estrogenic activity of parabens may cause undesirable health effects and adverse birth outcomes. The objective of the present systematic review was to investigate the association between prenatal exposure to parabens and anthropometric birth outcomes. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase databases were systematically searched until April 18, 2018. Of 326 records that remained after removing duplicates, 6 original articles were included in the final analysis after excluding irrelevant articles. The included studies indicated that most of the pregnant mothers were exposed to parabens, especially methyl and propyl parabens. However, no definitive association was found between the prenatal urinary concentration of parabens and birth weight or head circumference. In addition, a positive but non-significant association was detected between birth length and maternal exposure to parabens. The present systematic review revealed that assessment of significant associations in current epidemiological studies is impermissible due to methodological limitations and absence of inter-study consistency. Furthermore, because of the complexity of the effect of environmental factors on health, future large-scale studies with proper study design are required to investigate the effect of parabens exposure on birth outcomes., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Novel graphene oxide (GO)-based adsorbent embedded with epichlorohydrin (ECH) as a coupling agent and dimethylamine (DMA) as a ligand (GO-ECH-DMA) were prepared and employed for endotoxin removal from aqueous solutions. The physicochemical properties of nanocomposite were fully characterized. The model attributed to batch adsorption process was optimized employing response surface methodology (RSM) via various parameters such as pH, GO-ECH-DMA dosage, and contact time and endotoxin concentration. The p-value with low probability (<0.00001), determination coefficient (R 2 =0.99) and the non-significant lack of fit (p > 0.05) showed a quadratic model with a good fit with experimental terms. The synergistic effects of the linear term of contact time and GO-ECH-DMA dosage on endotoxin removal were significant. The optimum condition for endotoxin removal was obtained at pH of 5.52, GO-ECH-DMA dosage of 21 mgL -1 , contact time of 56 min and endotoxin concentration of 51.3 endotoxin units per milliliter (EUmL -1 ). The equilibrium was the better explained by Langmuir isotherm with the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 121.47 EUmg-1, while the kinetics of the endotoxin adsorption process was followed by the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorbent could be recycled with NaOH. The focuses of this research is to prepare an efficient magnetic glycopolymer for bacteria removal from aqueous solution. To perform this idea; porous MnFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 was functionalized with glucose and or maltose as an anchors to adhere onto bacteria cell surface. Aminopropyltriethoxysilane was employed to link the saccharides on magnetic nanoparticle surface. The hybrid materials were characterized with XRD, VSM, FT-IR, FESEM, TEM, zeta potential measurement and elemental mapping. Microscopic image showed that MnFe 2 O 4 is in cluster form composed from tiny nanoparticles. After saccharide functionalization hybrid composite generate hyper-crosslinked porous structure as a result of polysilicate formation due to hydrolysis of silica source. Escherichia coli and bacillus subtilis were selected as sample pathogens to evaluate the bacteria capturing ability of the magnetic glycopolymer. The presence of most prescribed antibiotic compounds from four therapeutic classes (β-lactam, cephalosporins, macrolides, fluoroquinolones) were studied at two full-scale WWTPs, two rivers, thirteen groundwater resources, and five water treatment plants in Tehran. Analytical methodology was based on high performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry after solid-phase extraction. Samples were collected at 33 sample locations on three sampling periods over four months from June to August 2016. In this work, amine riched MnFe 2 O 4 -cellulose was employed to remove toxic Cr (VI). To find out the optimum conditions R (3.3.1) software was used. The results of Cr (VI) adsorption onto three-step adsorbents were compared by interpreting kinetic and isotherm studies. The kinetic studies reveal that the adsorption of Cr (VI) onto cellulose and magnetic cellulose (MC) followed pseudo-first order model whereas the adsorption of Cr (VI) onto amine modified cellulose (AFMC) followed pseudo-second order kinetic model. From the obtained intraparticle diffusion model results it is evident that the adsorption is an external surface process. The adsorption isotherm parameters for Cr (VI) adsorption onto MC and AFMC showed that the correlation coefficient (R 2 : 0.96, 0.88) of Freundlich isotherm is more than that of Langmuir isotherm (R 2 : 0.50, 0.76); hence, it is suggested that the adsorption of Cr (VI) onto these sorbents occurs in multilayer possessing heterogeneous sorption sites whereas the adsorption onto cellulose followed Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of cellulose, MC and AFMC under optimum conditions were found to be 25, 125 and 250mg/g, respectively; thus, it is confirmed that adsorption efficiency has been improved after modification steps., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Kinin B1 receptors are implicated in asthmatic airway inflammation. Here we tested this hypothesis by examining the anti-inflammatory effects of BI113823, a novel non-peptide orally active kinin B1 receptor antagonist in mice sensitized to ovalbumin (OVA). Male Balb-c mice were randomly assigned to four study groups: (1) control, (2) OVA+vehicle, (3) OVA+BI113823, (4) OVA+dexamethasone. Mice were sensitized intraperitoneally with 75μg ovalbumin on days 1 and 8. On days 15-17, mice were challenged intranasally with 50μg of ovalbumin. Mice received vehicle, BI113823, or dexamethasone (positive control) on days 16-18. On day 19, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and lung tissue were collected for biochemical and immuno-histological analysis. Compared to controls treatment with BI113823 significantly reduced the numbers of BAL eosinophils, macrophages, neutrophils and lymphocytes by 58.3%, 61.1%, 66.4% and 56.0%, respectively. Mice treated with dexamethasone showed similar reductions in BAL cells. Treatment with BI113823 and dexamethasone also significantly reduced total protein content, IgE, TNF-α and IL-1β in lavage fluid, reduced myeloperoxidase activity, mucus secretion in lung tissues, and reduced the expression of B1 receptors, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 compared to vehicle-treated mice. Only BI113823 reduced MMP-9 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). BI113823 effectively reduced OVA-induced inflammatory cell, mediator and signaling pathways equal to or greater than that seen with steroids in a mouse asthma model. The term immunodominance was originally defined as a restricted T cell response to a short peptide sequence derived from a given protein. The question of what determines immunodominance has been a longstanding battle for the past two decades. Hundreds of papers have been written on different aspects of epitope selection during antigen processing documenting the complexity of the process. Antigen processing machinery involves several accessory molecules and chaperons coevolved with proteins of Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecules that each plays its part in epitope selection. These molecules are targeted to specialized vesicular compartments that also accommodate antigen processing enzymes called cathepsins. Within the antigen processing compartments, highly regulated pH gradient and reducing conditions and enzymes necessary for denaturation of the antigens are available and function to optimize processing of antigen and selection of the fittest for transport to the cell membrane and presentation to T cells. Despite the complexity, a cell free reductionist antigen processing system was recently reported that included only few purified proteins, but was shown to process and select physiologically relevant epitopes from full length protein antigens. Due to its minimalist nature the system has been quite helpful in dissecting the factors that contribute to epitope selection during antigen processing. Petroleum-polluted soils are a common disaster in many countries. Bioremediation of oil contamination in soils is based on the stimulation of petroleum-hydrocarbon-degrading fungal and microbial communities. A field study was conducted in a petroleum-contaminated site to find petroleum-resistant plants and their root-associated fungal strains for use in bioremediation of petroleum-polluted soils. Results and observations showed that the amounts of petroleum pollution in nonvegetated soils were several times higher than in vegetated soils. Plants collected from petroleum-polluted areas were identified using morphological characters. Results indicated that seven plant species were growing on the contaminated sites: Alhaji cameleron L. (Fabaceae), Amaranthus retroflexus L. var. retroflexus (Amaranthaceae), Convolvulus arvensis L. (Convolvulaceae), Chrozophora hierosolymitana Spreg. (Euphorbiaceae), Noea mucronata L. (Boraginaceae), Poa sp. (Poaceae), and Polygonum aviculare L. (Polygonaceae). The root-associated fungi of each plant were determined and results showed the presence of 11 species that associated with and also penetrated the roots of plants growing in the polluted areas. Altenaria sp. was common to all of the plants and the others had species-specific distribution within the plants. The largest numbers of fungal species (six) were determined for P. aviculare and Poa sp. in polluted areas. However, the variation of fungal strains in the plants collected from petroleum-polluted areas was greater than for nonpolluted ones. Culture of fungi in oil-contaminated media showed that all the studied fungi were resistant to low petroleum pollution (1% v/v) and a few species, especially Fusarium species, showed resistance to higher petroleum pollution (10% v/v) and may be suitable for bioremediation in highly polluted areas. Bioremediation tests with P. aviculare, with and without fungal strains, showed that application of both the plant and its root-associated fungal strains was more effective than of the plant and fungi separately, and Fusarium species were the most effective.
