Mercury is a pervasive and concerning pollutant due to its toxicity, mobility, and tendency to biomagnify in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Speciation analysis is crucial to assess exposure and risks associated with mercury, as different mercury species exhibit varying properties and toxicities. This study aimed at developing a selective detection method for organic mercury species in a non-invasive biomonitoring matrix like human hair. The method is based on frontal chromatography (FC) in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), using a low pressure, homemade, anion exchange column inserted in a standard ICP-MS introduction system, without requiring high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) hyphenation. In addition to the extreme simplification and cost reduction of the chromatographic equipment, the proposed protocol involves a fast, streamlined and fully integrated sample preparation process (in contrast to existing methods): the optimized procedure features a 15-min ultrasonic assisted extraction procedure and 5 min analysis time. Consequently, up to 100 samples could be analyzed daily, making the method highly productive and suitable for large-scale screening programs in public and environmental health. Moreover, the optimized procedure enables a limit of detection (LOD) of 5.5 μg/kg for a 10 mg hair microsample. All these features undeniably demonstrate a significant advancement in routine biomonitoring practices. Zooplankton has been intensively used as bioindicators of water pollution at global level, however, only few comprehensive studies have been conducted from the Mediterranean Sea and manly dated back to the 1970s. To redress the urgent need for updated data, this study provides information on the presence and levels of contaminants in zooplankton from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Although banned, both PCBs (46.9 ± 37.2 ng g -1 ) and DDT (8.9 ± 10.7 ng g -1 ) are still present and widespread, but their contamination appears to be a local problem and to be declining over the past 50 years. Zooplankton accumulates high levels of certain TEs, including Zn (400 ± 388 ppm) and Pb (35.3 ± 45.5 ppm), but shows intermediate concentrations of other TEs, including Cd (1.6 ± 0.9 ppm) and Hg (0.1 ± 0.1 ppm), comparing with both strongly polluted and more pristine marine habitats, which may reflect a general improvement., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. The interaction between environmental plastic and trace elements is an issue of concern. Understanding their interaction mechanisms is key to evaluate the potential threats for the environment. To this regard, consolidating confidence in extraction protocols can help in understanding the amount of different species present on plastic surface, as well as the potential mobility of trace elements present inside the plastic matrix (e.g., additives). Here we tested the efficacy of different reagents to mimic the elemental phases bonded to meso- and microplastic in the environment, in relation to the grade of ageing and the polymer composition. Results showed that a relatively high portion of trace elements is bonded in a weak phase and that other phases abundant in other matrices (e.g., oxides and bonded to organic matter) are only present to a limited degree in the plastic samples. The comparison of different sample types highlighted the important role of plastic ageing in governing interactions with trace elements, while the polymer composition has a limited influence on this process. A fast and cost-effective procedure based on Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the selective determination of methylmercury (MeHg) is proposed and validated for fish tissue analysis. Selectivity for MeHg is achieved by simply inserting a strong anion exchange resin to block inorganic mercury as negatively charged chloride species, leaving MeHg unretained. The procedure features a 15 min extraction time followed by a 100 s analysis time achieving a limit of detection of 1.6 μg kg -1 on solid samples. The effect of the solution composition and inorganic mercury concentration were extensively studied to fully assess the selectivity of the procedure: Hg(II):MeHg ratios up to 50 are tolerated and cause systematic errors lower than 15%. The entire procedure was successfully validated by standard reference material from the marine food web, namely fish muscle and liver plus zooplankton. The status of contamination by chemical pollutants on large filter feeding sharks is still largely unknown. This study investigated for the first time the presence of legacy, emerging contaminants and trace elements in multiple tissues of basking sharks. In general, skin showed higher concentration of legacy and emerging contaminants probably due to pollutants being adsorbed onto the dermal denticles of the skin rather than accumulated in the tissue itself. Contaminants measured in both subcutaneous tissue and muscles appeared to strongly correlate with each other, indicating that the former might be a good proxy of muscle contamination in basking sharks. Considering the migratory nature of this species, longevity and feeding ecology, this species represents the perfect candidate to act as early warning bioindicator of regional contamination. We provided the first multi-species study investigating the presence and organotropism of trace elements in three tissues of 12 elasmobranch species. Shark species showed comparable TE loads, although milk sharks and juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks exhibited the highest Cd and Hg levels, respectively. Fins accumulated higher levels of Pb, Co, and Cr; muscles higher V, As, and Hg; livers higher Se and Cd levels. The organotropism of TEs calls for cautious when choosing a tissue to be sampled since certain tissues, like fin clips, do not provide reliable surrogate for the internal loads of some TEs. Strong correlations between essential and toxic TEs indicated detoxification mechanisms, while the TMF provided evidence for Hg, As and Se biomagnification along the food-web. Iron speciation in seawater is of the utmost importance as this element plays a central role in the regulation of primary productivity. Here we present the development of a CLE-CSV (Competitive Ligand Equilibration-Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry) procedure for iron speciation in seawater avoiding for the first time the use of the pH buffer (2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene is used as the added ligand, atmospheric oxygen as the catalytic enhancer and a 1 mL volume per sample aliquot). The unbuffered method was setup, validated by using known ligands and finally applied to the analysis of six seawater samples from the Ross Sea (Antarctica). The validation procedure demonstrated that ultratrace levels of ligands may be reliably determined and the application to seawater samples proved that the complex natural ligand pool can be detected with results undistinguishable from the ones obtained by the buffered procedure. The proposed method demonstrated a new principle in trace element speciation analysis by CLE-CSV, namely that the equilibration step may be performed at natural pH, whereas the pH may be set at its optimal value for sensitivity during analysis, thanks to the raise in pH at the electrode/solution interface caused by oxygen reduction. This change in paradigm paves the way to the investigation of iron speciation at natural pH in traditionally difficult samples that show circumneutral or slightly acidic pH values. An analytical method derived from the coupling of frontal chromatography (FC) with Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is proposed for the fast determination of Cr(VI) ultra-traces. The insertion of a short, homemade column filled with a strong cationic exchange resin in the flow-path of a commercial ICP-MS allows on-line trapping of cationic Cr(III) and elution of anionic Cr(VI). As a result, only the Cr(VI) front reaches the detector. This separation mechanism enables the highly selective quantification of Cr(VI) ultra-traces (LOD = 0.026 µg/kg - defined as 3 s of 10 replicated measurements of a 0.050 µg/kg solution) over a wide linearity range (tested up to 1024 µg/kg), even in the presence of Cr(III) concentration as high as 50 mg/kg. Key advantages of the proposed method are the extremely short analysis time (one minute), together with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of the modifications applied over a commercial ICP-MS instrumental configuration. No time- or chemical-consuming pretreatments are needed: it is only necessary to acidify the sample prior Cr(VI) determination, as normally performed for common ICP-MS analysis. The chemical analysis of tree rings has attracted the interest of researchers in the past five decades in view of the possibility of exploiting this biological indicator as a widely available, high-resolution environmental archive. Information regarding the surrounding environment can be derived either by directly measuring environmental variables (nutrient availability, presence of pollutants, etc.) or by exploiting proxies (e.g. paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental reconstructions). This review systematically covers the topic and provides a critical view on the reliability of dendrochemical information. First, we introduce the determinable chemical species, such as major elements, trace metals, isotopic ratios, and organic compounds, together with a brief description of their uptake mechanisms and functions in trees. Subsequently, we present the possibilities offered by analytical techniques in the field of tree ring analysis, focusing on direct methods and recent developments. The latter strongly improved the details of the accessible information, enabling the investigation of complex phenomena associated with plant life and encouraging the direct analysis of new analytes, particularly minor organic compounds. With regard to their applications, dendrochemical proxies have been used to trace several processes, such as environmental contamination, paleoclimate reconstruction, global environmental changes, tree physiology, extreme events, ecological trends, and dendroprovenance. Several case studies are discussed for each proposed application, with special emphasis on the reliability of tracing each process. Starting from the reviewed literature data, the second part of the paper is devoted to the critical assessment of the reliability of tree ring proxies. We provide an overview of the current knowledge, discuss the limitations of the inferences that may be drawn from the dendrochemical data, and provide recommendations for the best practices to be used for their validation. The Gulf of Tadjoura (Djibouti) is an important site where the whale shark (Rhincodon typus Smith, 1828) aggregates seasonally. Because of the proximity to the port of Djibouti that is located along one of the busiest shipping areas in the world, whale sharks are potentially exposed to relatively high levels of trace elements and organochlorines. To assess their contamination status, concentrations of 15 trace elements, DDTs and PCBs were concurrently assessed for the first time in skin biopsies of 20 whale sharks. Additionally, 12 zooplankton samples were collected and analyzed for trace elements content. Concentration of As, Cu, Zn and Se were higher than in previous studies on this species. Whale shark samples exceeded the maximum allowable limits for foodstuffs for Cr, Pb Se, Cd and Zn. Results from this study suggests that Cr, Ni and Mo may biomagnify in this species. With regard to PCBs, the predominant congener were Tetra-CB, accounting for 41% of total PCBs and Penta-CB for 23%, while for DDTs, the predominant metabolite was DDE contributing for 51% of total compounds. The maximum residue limit for DDTs and for the ind-PCBs in fish set by U.S. EPA and by the EU regulation, respectively, was exceeded in 62% of whale sharks. Moreover, the p,p'DDE/ΣDDT ratios were higher than the critical value of 0.6, indicating possible recent inputs of technical DDTs in the area. Iron speciation analysis in seawater is a fundamental step to understand the cycling of this element in oceanic waters, in view of its central role in regulating primary productivity and its connection to global planetary cycles. At present, analytical procedures are the bottleneck for speciation analysis, in term of both time and sample size requirement. Here we present a novel instrumental configuration for the speciation analysis of iron by the Competitive Ligand Equilibration - Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (CLE-CSV) procedure. The new system features a 1 mL microcell and a silver wire pseudoreference enabling a tenfold reduction of the sample volume. 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene was used as the complexing ligand and atmospheric oxygen as the catalytic enhancer because they ensured the best analytical performances in terms of detection capabilities. The side reaction coefficient for the FeDHN complex α Fe'DHN was calibrated against EDTA and an average value of 9.25 for logK' Fe'DHN was calculated. The method was successfully validated in UV digested seawater using diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), which has known stability constant for iron. The method was lastly applied to six samples from the Ross Sea water column (Antarctica), demonstrating its fit for purpose for the detection of trace amounts of iron ligands in seawater. Thanks to the employed instrumental configuration and the high sensitivity, the proposed method achieved a tenfold reduction in sample size, a tenfold increase in sensitivity compared with other methods employing DHN and halved the analysis time with respect to the fastest method reported in the literature. Half an hour is enough to measure a 12 point titration, making the analysis of at least three titrations per day feasible. Within Djibouti (Gulf of Aden), the scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) and milk shark (Rhizoprionodon acutus) are important components of the artisanal fishery and they are caught to be exported or sold for local consumption. However, little scientific information exists on the contamination load of these species in this area of the world. With global populations of elasmobranchs in decline, understanding the extent of contaminant exposure is critical to future conservation as well as to assess the health risks for consumers of these species. The contaminants analyzed in this study comprised PCB, DDT and trace elements in livers, muscles and fins of both hammerhead sharks and milk sharks. The overall organochlorine compounds (OCs) and trace elements concentrations were similar among the two sharks' species and the pattern of PCB and DDT tissue distribution showed the highest burdens in livers compared with muscles and fins. However, the different accumulation profiles of OCs among shark species suggest species-specific accumulation of these contaminants. The p,p'DDE/∑DDT ratios were equal or slightly higher than the critic value of 0.6, suggesting possible recent inputs of technical DDT in the area. Concentration of trace elements from this study were generally comparable to those found in sharks from other areas of the world and, highlight the wide variation in metal concentrations between species, individuals and tissues. As far as Hg is concerned, scalloped hammerhead sharks showed higher accumulation in muscles compared with milk sharks. Both species showed elevated concentration of Se, which might be related to high Hg levels since Se inhibits Hg toxicity. The potential cancer risk for PCB, Cd, Ni, Cr and As fell within the range of 10 -6 -10 -4 , suggesting some concerns for the overall contamination levels in both species. The recent growing interest in peracetic acid (PAA) as disinfectant for wastewater treatment demands reliable and readily-available methods for its measurement. In detail, the monitoring of PAA in wastewater treatment plants requires a simple, accurate, rapid and inexpensive measurement procedure. In the present work, a method for analyzing low concentrations of PAA, adapted from the US EPA colorimetric method for total chlorine, is assessed. This method employs N,N-diethyl-p-phenylelnediamine (DPD) in the presence of an excess of iodide in a phosphate buffer system. Pink colored species are produced proportionally to the concentration of PAA in the sample. Considering that PAA is available commercially as an equilibrium solution of PAA and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), a measurement method for H 2 O 2 is also investigated. This method, as the one for the determination of PAA, is also based on the oxidation of iodide to iodine, with the difference that ammonium molybdate Mo(VI) is added to catalyze the oxidation reaction between H 2 O 2 and iodide, quantifying the total peroxides (PAA+ H 2 O 2 ). The two methods are suitable for concentration ranges from about 0.1-1.65 mg L -1 and from about 0.3-3.3 mg L -1 , respectively for PAA and H 2 O 2 . Laser Ablation - Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is a powerful method to determine the elemental composition of solid-state samples as it combines the high sensitivity and isotope selectivity of ICP-MS detection and the simplicity of laser ablation sampling. This technique enables rapid multiple sampling of the analysed material, such as needed for mapping or in-depth profiling applications. However, the duration of these measurements is practically restricted by the time taken for the particle to be transported from the sampling point to the ICP torch. The ablation cell, i.e. the sample holder, should combine high removal rate, high efficiency (i.e. complete transport of the ablated material) and reduced memory effects. These goals may be achieved by carefully designing the geometry of the cell and its gas flow patterns. A new cell design which enables a homogeneous wahout time of around 210 ms from a cylindrical chamber with 70 mm diameter is introduced in this paper. Washout time was determined as the time for the transient signal of 238U from a NIST610 glass standard to fall to 10% of its peak value. This result is achieved by combining a diffused, cylindrical flow pattern with an extraction tube coaxial with the laser beam and fixed to the laser assembly which enables the sampling point to be constantly positioned on the ablation spot. The lower part of the cell is mounted on the x,y stage for sample movement: the cell sealing is warranted by a viscous film junction between the lower and upper cell parts. Microwaves are widely used to assist digestion, general sample treatment and synthesis. The use of aqua regia is extensively adopted for the closed vessel mineralization of samples prior to trace element detection, leading to the contamination of microwave vessels by chlorine containing species. The latter are entrapped in the polymeric matrix of the vessels, leading to memory effects that are difficult to remove, among which the risk of silver incomplete recoveries by removal of the sparingly soluble chloride is the predominant one. In the present paper, we determined by mass spectrometry that hydrogen chloride is the species entrapped in the polymeric matrix and responsible for vessel contamination. Moreover, several decontamination treatments were considered to assess their efficiency, demonstrating that several cleaning cycles with water, nitric acid or silver nitrate in nitric acid were inefficient in removing chloride contamination (contamination reduction around 90%). Better results (≈95% decrease) were achieved by a single decontamination step in alkaline environment (sodium hydroxide or ammonia). Finally, a thermal treatment in a common laboratory oven (i.e. without vacuum and ventilation) was tested: a one hour heating at 150°C leads to a 98.5% decontamination, a figure higher than the ones obtained by wet treatments which requires comparable time. A method with negligible blank values for the determination of total iron at the ultratrace level in seawater has been optimized and validated exploring for the first time the performance and limitations of Adsorptive Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (AdCSV) in non-buffered solutions. The method is based on the CSV determination of the Fe-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) complex using atmospheric oxygen to catalytically enhance the signal via hydrogen peroxide formation at the electrode/solution interface. The accumulation of hydroxyl ions, the by-product of the hydrogen peroxide formation, increased the pH in the diffusion layer in the absence of buffer bringing it to 9, the optimum for the analytical performance of the method. Voltammograms in UV digested seawater showed no stability or reproducibility drawbacks. The negligible, lower than 5pM, blank level, is due to the simplicity of the procedure requiring no sample manipulation and a maximum of three reagents only, necessarily the ligand DHN and a base only for those samples previously acidified to raise the pH to circumneutral values (here HCl and NH3 according to common trace metals protocols). These reagents do not require cleaning before use, further simplifying the overall procedure. Analysis of seawater previously acidified at pH ~1.5 with HCl and neutralized with ammonia showed interferences due to the buffering properties of the NH3/NH4Cl couple and the transient formation of a volatile electroactive interference that can be easily removed by simply allowing a set time before analysis. In general, the proposed method features several advantages, including high sample throughput, an excellent limit of detection at 12pM, minimum sample handling (no preconcentration or change of matrix is required), cost effectiveness and mainly a negligible blank. Voltammetric techniques have emerged as powerful methods for the determination and speciation of trace and ultratrace elements without any preconcentration in several research fields. Nevertheless, large sample volumes are typically required (10 mL), which strongly limits their application and/or the precision of the results. In this work, we report a 20-fold reduction in sample size for trace and ultratrace elemental determination and speciation by conventional voltammetric instrumentation, introducing the lowest amount of sample (0.5 mL) in which ultratrace detection has been performed up to now. This goal was achieved by a careful design of a new sample holder. Reliable, validated results were obtained for the determination of trace/ultratrace elements in rainwater (Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb) and seawater (Cu). Moreover, copper speciation in seawater samples was consistently determined by competitive ligand equilibration-cathodic stripping voltammetry (CLE-CSV). The proposed apparatus showed several advantages: (1) 20-fold reduction in sample volume (the sample size is lowered from 120 to 6 mL for the CLE-CSV procedure); (2) decrease in analysis time due to the reduction in purging time up to 2.5 fold; (3) 20-fold drop in reagent consumption. Moreover, the analytical performances were not affected: similar detection capabilities, precision and accuracy were obtained. Thiols are compounds of paramount importance in the cellular metabolism due to their double detoxifying role as radical scavengers and trace metal ligands. However, we have scarce information about their extracellular cycling as limited data are available about their concentration, stability and speciation in the aquatic medium. In natural waters, they form part of the pool of reduced sulfur substance (RSS) whose presence has been documented by voltammetric and chromatographic methods. Traditional use of cathodic stripping voltammetry (CSV) for the analysis of RSS could only give an overall concentration due to the coalescence of their CSV peaks. Recently, it has been shown that the use of multiple deposition potentials could take voltammetry of RSS to a higher level, permitting the identification and quantification of the mixtures of RSS despite showing as a single coalescent peak. Here, due to its similarity with classical pseudopolarography, we propose to rename this analytical strategy as cathodic pseudopolarography (CP) and we present for the first time its use for the analysis of mixes of low molecular weight thiols (LMWT) at the nanomolar level. Despite limitations caused by the identical behavior of some LMWT, the CP allowed to isolate the contribution of cysteine and cystine from a coalescent signal in LMWT mixtures. Sample handling with clean protocols allowed the direct determination of the cystine:cysteine ratio without sample modification. Finally, we show the application of CP to identify LMWT in seawater samples extracted from benthic chambers and suggest future applications in other areas of environmental electroanalysis., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. In the present work we demonstrated that the digestion of difficult matrices (high boiling petrochemical fractions and distillation bottoms) can be achieved by oxidation with nitric acid vapours at atmospheric pressure employing simple laboratory glassware. The application of this procedure as a digestion method prior to Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence (TXRF) is presented, although the employment of other detection techniques may be foreseen. The method ensured a fast, less than half an hour, treatment time and detection limits in the range 20-100 μg/kg for As, Bi, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, Zn, whereas higher values were obtained for Ba, Ca, K, P, Rh, Ti and V (0.3-3 mg/kg). The analytical performances of Competitive Ligand Equilibration with Cathodic Stripping Voltammetric detection of the labile fraction (CLE-CSV) were assessed. This speciation method enables the concentration of natural ligand(s) and their conditional stability constants for the complexation of the investigated metal to be determined through thermodynamic considerations. Literature data were discussed and general trends in the precision of the determined parameters identified: ligand concentrations were affected, on average, by a 10% relative percentage standard deviation (RSD%), whereas conditional stability constants showed much lower precision, with an average RSD% of 50%. New experimental data were collected to obtain a complete assessment of accuracy and precision attainable for the determination of strong ligands at the ultra trace level, enabling the whole protocol to be evaluated. Firstly, the side reaction coefficient alpha for the formation of the complex between the added ligand and the investigated metal (alpha(CuL)) was determined. The method was subsequently applied to the analysis of solution containing ligand at trace levels (5-50 nM) with known complexing characteristics. Copper was used as the model metal ion and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) as the model ligands. Results evidenced that the CLE-CSV protocol is not affected by systematic errors in the determination of both ligand concentration and the conditional stability constants. Good precision is obtained for ligand concentrations, with an average relative standard deviation (RSD%) of 5%; an average RSD% of 23% was calculated for the conditional stability constants. Including the contribution of the uncertainty in the value of alpha(CuL) in the evaluation of the uncertainty in the latter parameter increased the RSD% up to 40%. Cultural heritage represents a bridge between the contemporary society and the past populations, and a strong collaboration between archaeologists, art historians and analysts may lead to the decryption of the information hidden in an ancient object. Quantitative elemental compositional data play a key role in solving questions concerning dating, provenance, technology, use and the relationship of ancient cultures with the environment. Nevertheless, the scientific investigation of an artifact should be carried out complying with some important constraints: above all the analyses should be as little destructive as possible and performed directly on the object to preserve its integrity. Laser ablation sampling coupled to inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) fulfils these requirements exhibiting comparably strong analytical performance in trace element determination. This review intends to show through the applications found in the literature how valuable is the contribution of LA-ICP-MS in the investigation of ancient materials such as obsidian, glass, pottery, human remains, written heritage, metal objects and miscellaneous stone materials. The main issues related to cultural heritage investigation are introduced, followed by a brief description of the features of this technique. An overview of the exploitation of LA-ICP-MS is then presented. Finally, advantages and drawbacks of this technique are critically discussed: the fit for purpose and prospects of the use of LA-ICP-MS are presented.

A new automated batch method for the determination of ultratrace metals (nanogram per liter level) was developed and validated. Instrumental and chemical parameters affecting the performance of the method were carefully assessed and optimized. A wide range of voltammetric methods under different chemical conditions were tested. Cadmium, lead and copper were determined by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV), while nickel, cobalt, rhodium and uranium by adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (AdCSV). The figures of merit of all of these methods were determined: very good precision and accuracy were achieved, e.g. relative percentage standard deviation in the 4-13% for ASV and 2-5% for AdCSV. The stripping methods were applied to the determination of cadmium, lead, copper, nickel, cobalt, rhodium and uranium in lake water samples and the results were found to be comparable with ICP-MS data.
