Debonding at the cement-casing interface is recognized as a principal failure mechanism leading to CO2 leakage in wells. This detachment gives rise to a microannulus, which notably possesses greater permeability than undamaged cement, undermining its sealing efficacy. Conventionally, the permeability of the microannulus is regarded as a uniform value throughout the well. However, fundamentally, a microannulus is one type of fracture, and its gap or aperture size is affected by the effective stress. In this work, we developed a unique experimental apparatus. This equipment facilitates the curing of cement inside a steel casing, the formation of a microannulus between the casing and the cement, and the investigation of the fluid flow dynamics along the microannulus under laboratory-replicated in situ conditions. The microannulus was formed by injecting fluid from one end of the setup, and receiving similar amount of fluid on the other end signified the development of the leakage channel. Additionally, strain gauges affixed to the casing’s external surface yielded key information on the microannulus’s opening and closure. We observed a noticeable decline in microannulus hydraulic aperture (or permeability) in relation to effective stress and an exponential equation fits their relationship. Our findings also indicate a distinct behavior when comparing liquid CO2 with water. Specifically, it is easier for liquid CO2 to create the microannulus. However, the hydraulic aperture range for this microannulus (0.7–6 μm) is considerably smaller than that created by water flow (2–17 μm). Finally, we integrated the stress-dependent microannulus aperture size into the combined analysis of well mechanical integrity and well leakage. The outcomes consistently demonstrated that when factoring in the stress-dependent aperture sizes, the leakage rates are 3–5 times compared to a fixed aperture model. The traditional assumption of a constant aperture significantly underestimates fluid leakage risks.

Microorganism motility holds significant importance in the realm of biomedical research. It contributes to the investigation of bacterial infections, microbial pathogenesis, and the formulation of strategies for combating antimicrobial resistance. Motile microorganisms embody a multifaceted and dynamic facet of microbial existence, exerting influence on ecosystems, human health, and advancements in technology. The significance of the current investigations is to develop a steady 3D computational model for the magnetic field hydrodynamics micropolar nanofluid along with the Buongiorno model which incorporates Brownian motion and thermophoretic diffusion effects to describe the heat transfer enhancement of micropolar nanofluid. The influence of thermal radiation on convective boundary conditions is also considered here. Similarity transformations are employed to convert an equation of motion into an ordinary differential equation. The final shape of ODEs is solved numerically with the aid of MATLAB software. Graphical results against convergence parameters like the influence of magnetic parameter, velocity ratio parameter, Prandtl number, micropolar parameter, porosity parameter thermophoretic number, Brownian motion, bio-convective Schmidt number, Peclet number thermal radiation parameter is demonstrated on velocity, temperature, concentration, motile and angular profiles. The default values of physical parameter used our analysis are: 0.2≤M≤0.5, 0.2≤λ≤0.6, 0.2≤K≤0.5, 0.0≤K1≤2.0, 1.0≤Sb≤1.4, 0.1≤σ≤0.9 0.1≤Nr≤0.9, 0.3≤Nt≤1.8, 1.5≤A≤3.5, 0.0≤B≤2.0; 0.0≤Nb≤2.0, 0.5≤γ≤2.5, 0.0≤S≤0.8, 1.0≤Sc≤1.8, 0.0≤D≤2.0, 0.1≤Pe≤0.5.The novelty of the present model is validated with the previously published data and found an excellent agreement. Our obtained results signifies that a rise in the mass and temperature convective parameter causes the velocity profile to grow, but a rise in the porosity and magnetic parameter causes it to decrease. The temperature profile increases with a rise in, thermophoretic parameter, and magnetic parameter, whereas it decreases with a rise in temperature exponent and Prandtl number. This research brings esteemed insights the micropolar nanofluids make them attractive options for a variety of uses in a range of sectors, such as manufacturing, energy, electronics, and healthcare.

The growing interest in the therapeutic potential of cannabidiol (CBD) has led to the need for effective and reliable delivery methods that overcome its low oral absorption. Zeolites, a class of porous nanoparticles, offer unique advantages as drug carriers due to their high surface area and adjustable pore size. In this study, a zeolite-based drug delivery system was developed for the encapsulation of CBD. The zeolite particles were characterized using various techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption analysis, Solid-state Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Direct Light Scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) before and after the loading. The drug encapsulation efficiency, and the release profile of CBD from the zeolite matrix were evaluated in addition to in vitro dissolution experiments in the intestinal and gastric simulated fluids. The results showed that the loaded zeolite particles exhibited high encapsulation efficiency of 73.5 %. XRD analysis proved that the USY structure remained intact after loading with CBD. DLS and N2 adsorption analysis indicated that CBD was successfully loaded into the zeolite matrix. When compared to CBD containing particles in a commercialized capsule, the in-vitro dissolution rate of CBD loaded zeolite was significantly higher after 30 min in the simulated stomach (pH 1.8) and the intestinal (pH 6.8) fluids, 67.8 % versus 43.6 % and 62.6 % vs 38.4 % respectively. Our findings open new avenues for the use of zeolites as an efficient drug delivery system for drugs with low bioavailability like CBD.

Managing the vast quantities of waste constantly generated by mining activities is one of the major environmental and economic problems facing mankind today. Fluorapatite is separated from the associated gangue minerals by a series of crushing and screening, washing, and flotation processes. These processes produce a significant amount of phosphate sludge, which is stored on the mine site in drift rock and large surface ponds. One possible environmental option is to reuse it as an alternative raw material in ceramics and building materials. Consequently, two phosphate sludges from two different Moroccan towns, Youssoufia and Khouribga, were studied. Due to the complexity of these raw materials resulting from long geological processes, in-depth physical, chemical, mineralogical, and thermal characterization is required. Dry compressed powder pellets were sintered at 900 °C, 1000 °C, and 1100 °C for 2 h. The study focuses on the effect of sintering temperature on mineralogical transformations and ceramic properties such as apparent porosity, water absorption, and mechanical strength. At 1100 °C, a slight increase in density was observed for both phosphate sludges. Water absorption was reduced by 2.51 % in both sludges for pellets sintered at 1100 °C compared to those sintered at 900 °C. Mechanical strength improved significantly, with an increase of about 60 % for samples sintered at 1100 °C, recording 227 N for Youssoufia sludge and 247 N for Khouribga sludge. This work has provided new data on the physical, chemical, mineralogical, and thermal changes in ceramics as the sintering temperature increases. These data will be useful for the manufacture of high-value ceramics.

Tackling methane emissions is critical for mitigating climate change, emphasizing the need to identify, quantify, and mitigate emission sources. Methane emissions can be detected using airborne techniques equipped with suitable sensors; however, a method is needed to precisely estimate methane source flux rates from these measurements. We have developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) model using a dataset generated from Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) mimicking the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS-NG) measurements with different source flux rates (5–100 kg/hr) and varying wind speeds (1–10 m/s). Our proposed deep neural network architecture is simple, ensuring efficient training on synthetic data. Additionally, we have optimized model hyperparameters and architecture, improving accuracy and enabling precise quantification of source flux rates. We test the trained model on synthetic 2D images, demonstrating excellent overall predictability with mean absolute percentage errors of 2.15 % for the training dataset, 5.02 % for the validation dataset, and 4.84 % for the test dataset in predicting the source flux rates in kg/hr using the synthetic images. The error of predicting source flux rates using conventional flux inversion methods is around 25–50 %, whereas the machine learning method of predicting source flux rate achieves an accuracy of more than 17 %, which is the current state-of-the-art in this process. Validation against field data also showed excellent results, with a low error (∼5%) in estimating source flux rates in the Permian Basin oil and gas wells. Validation against field measurements indicates that this method can reduce the uncertainties associated with currently used conventional source flux inversions without relying on background information like wind speeds. Sometimes, the uncertainties of field measurements are as significant as the actual emission rates, especially for low emissions. This machine learning model can serve as a screening tool to prioritize top emitters for plugging orphaned and abandoned wells in large geographical areas, such as city boundaries covering more than 1,000 miles.

The transition from fossil fuels to carbon-neutral energy sources is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and combat climate change. Hydrogen (H2) provides a promising path to harness fossil fuels to reduce emissions in sectors such as transportation. However, regional economic analyses of various H2 production techniques are still lacking. We selected a well-known fossil fuel-exporting region, the USA's Intermountain-West (I-WEST), to analyze the carbon intensity of H2 production and demonstrate regional tradeoffs. Currently, 78 % of global H2 production comes from natural gas and coal. Therefore, we considered steam methane reforming (SMR), surface coal gasification (SCG) and underground coal gasification (UCG) as H2 production methods in this work. We developed the cost estimation frameworks of SMR, SCG and UCG with and without carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS). In addition, we identified optimal sites for H2 hubs by considering the proximity to energy sources, energy markets, storage sites and CO2 sequestration sites. We included new production tax credits (PTCs) in the cost estimation to quantify the economic benefit of CCUS. Our results suggest that the UCG has the lowest levelized cost of H2 production due to the elimination of coal production cost. H2 production using the SMR process with 99 % carbon capture is profitable when the PTCs are considered. We also analyzed carbon utilization opportunities where CO2 conversion to formic acid is a promising profitable option. This work quantifies the potential of H2 production from fossil fuels in the I-WEST region, a key parameter for designing energy transition pathways.

Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

Hydrogen provides the greatest performance in conditions of capacity and duration when related to other energy storage techniques. Renewable energy sources including solar, geothermal, wind, wave and tidal energy, and hydropower, are used to create green hydrogen. However, biogas is converted into renewable hydrogen via chemical procedures. A comparison of several water Electrolyzer types is provided by this research. All kinds of Electrolyzers have an impact on how well a green hydrogen production system works were discussed. This review gives a broad review of environmentally friendly hydrogen generation techniques based on renewable energy sources. These sources incorporate solar energy, hydropower, wind energy, tidal and wave energy, biogas systems, geothermal energy, and hybrid systems of these sources. The method used to obtain the hydrogen and its effects on the environment is the primary distinction between green hydrogen and other colors. Climate, control, management systems, and tracking systems. The innovations and difficulties that green hydrogen systems encounter are highlighted. In the final section, the costs associated with manufacturing hydrogen are explained through an economic study of the understudied production systems LCOE and LCOH. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of all electrolyzers are discussed.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a widely used plastic that accounts for almost 18 % of global polymer production and is non-biodegradable, making it a major cause of environmental pollution. Innovative solutions are needed to address PET waste management and reduce its impact. This study aims to investigate the impact of adding PET, on the engineering characteristics of a Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA-20) mixture. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess the volumetric and mechanical properties of asphalt mixes containing different proportions of PET as fine and filler (ranging from 0 % to 30 %) by volume of aggregates. The results show that the PET incorporation into the asphalt mixture has significantly improved the performance. The addition of PET (fine and filler) to asphalt mixtures significantly increases their resilient modulus (MR). The mixtures containing 10 % PET as fine and filler are 20 % and 22 % higher in MR than the control mixture. Moreover, the moisture assessment shows that the PET mixture has a higher tensile strength ratio (TSR) value of 85.9 % and 83.90 % for Fine-10 and Filler-20, thus meeting the AASHTO requirement of ≥80 %. The utilization of PET as aggregate replacement significantly improves the permanent deformation characteristics of asphalt mixtures by decreasing permanent strain. The Fine-20 and Filler-20 revealed promising results by reducing the strain to 0.92 % and 0.81 %. Also, the enhancement in the creep stiffness modulus with 216 and 244 MPa. Furthermore, the addition of PET up to a concentration of 20 % had a beneficial effect on the fatigue response of mixtures. For instance, the failure cycles of the Filler-20 and Fine-10 are 23,231 and 17,521 cycles at a load of 2250 N, whereas the control mixture only endures 8581 failure cycles. In conclusion, PET addition significantly improves SMA properties, promoting waste material utilization in the pavement industry.

Background: This study explores the use of tetra-hybrid nanoparticles consisting of gold, silver, alumina, and titania nanocomposites dispersed in a non-Newtonian Casson fluid modelled as blood. The motivation lies in harnessing the synergistic optical, electrical, thermal, and physicochemical properties of the multimodal nanoscale assembly to advance electrokinetic pumping processes. Objectives: The study aims to computationally investigate the complex transport assisted by tailored gold, silver, alumina, and titania dioxide nanoparticles in the tetra-hybrid nanofluid, with potential applications in targeted drug delivery, hyperthermia cancer treatment, Lab-on-Chip devices, and miniaturized biosensors. Methodology: The constructed streaming flow model examines the cumulative influence of viscous heating, Joule heating, conductive thermal, and external laser irradiation. Current simulations examine Casson flows with the integrated nanoparticles by modelling two- and three-dimensional conduits subject to transverse magnetohydrodynamics and localized laser irradiation. Key findings: The solutions provide mathematical predictions and physical insights into the fully coupled velocity, temperature, concentration, and pressure gradient contours. Additional plots examining dimensionless analytes against pertinent profiles, combined with streamlined visualization, further elucidate the multifaceted transport and complex trapping patterns stemming from non-Newtonian rheology. Applications/implications: This multiscale examination reveals performance improvements realizable by leveraging biocompatible tetra-hybrid nanocomposites in electrokinetic flows vital for next-generation biomedical technologies.

In various engineering and industrial utilizations, the heat-mass transportation concept has been rigorously witnessed, for illustration air conditioning of room, nuclear reactors cooling and abundant other realistic conditions. This scrutiny elaborates buoyancy-driven viscoelastic magnetized flow configured by stretched vertical surface. Heat-transfer effects are explored through Ohmic dissipations and radiation aspects. Chemical reaction characteristics are deliberated to address the mass-transfer effects. In addition, the stratification phenomenon together with Robin conditions is introduced. Mathematical systems are simplified under BLT (boundary-layer theory). Non-dimensional analysis is done by introducing similarity variables. Homotopic criteria is utilized to compute convergent solutions. Consequence of controlling variables emerging in non-dimensional problem is analyzed via pictorial and tabular illustrations. It is evident that temperature field together with heat transference rate are enlarged when radiation and thermal Biot parameters are augmented.

Accurate rock elastic property determination is vital for effective hydraulic fracturing, particularly Young's modulus due to its link to rock brittleness. This study integrates interdisciplinary data for better predictions of elastic modulus, combining data mining, experiments, and calibrated synthetics. We used the microstructural insights extracted from rock images for geomechanical facies analysis. Additionally, the petrophysical data and well logs were correlated with shear wave velocity (Vs) and Young's modulus. We developed a machine-learning workflow to predict Young's modulus and assess rock fracturability, considering mineral composition, geomechanics, and microstructure. Our findings indicate that artificial neural networks effectively predict Young's modulus, while K-Means clustering and hierarchical support vector machines excel in identifying rock and geomechanical facies. Utilizing Microscale thin section analysis in conjunction with fracture modeling enhances our understanding of fracture geometries and facilitates fracturability assessment. Notably, fracturability is controlled by specific geomechanical facies during initiation and propagation and influenced by continuity of geomechanical facies in small depth intervals. In conclusion, this study demonstrates data mining and machine learning potential for predicting rock properties and assessing fracturability, aiding hydraulic fracturing design optimization through diverse data and advanced methods.

Limonia acidissima Groff, commonly referred to as the Wood apple, is a tropical fruit belonging to Rutaceae family. Indigenous to Sri Lanka, India, and Myanmar, it is extensively cultivated throughout Southeast Asia. This fruit holds a profound historical significance in traditional medicine due to its exceptional nutritional and therapeutic attributes. Wood apple pulp is significantly abundant in β-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, and contains a substantial amount of vitamin B, including riboflavin and thiamine, as well as trace amounts of ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Moreover health-benefitting properties associated with L. acidissima, such as, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, neuroprotective, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spermatogenic, analgesic, antiulcer, and antihyperlipidemic properties, are attributed to a diverse range of phytochemicals. These encompass polyphenolic compounds, saponins, phytosterols, tannins, triterpenoids, coumarins, amino acids, tyramine derivatives, and vitamins. From the findings of the various studies, it was observed that wood apple fruit shows significant anticancer activity by inhibiting the proliferation of cancer. Furthermore, wood apple finds wide-ranging commercial applications in the formulation of ready-to-serve beverages, syrups, jellies, chutneys, and various other food products. In summary, this review highlights the nutritional and phytochemical constituents of wood apple, depicts its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic capabilities, and explores its potential in value-added product development. Nevertheless, it is crucial to acknowledge that the molecular mechanisms supporting these properties remain an underexplored domain. To ensure the safe integration of wood apple fruit into the realms of the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical sectors, rigorous clinical trials, including toxicity assessments, are required. These endeavors hold the potential to promote innovation and contribute significantly to both research and industrial sectors.

Internet of Things (IoT) security and reliability rely on the capacity to identify distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) assaults in IoT networks. This research presents a comprehensive study on DDoS attack detection using the NSL-KDD dataset. The dataset contains a diverse set of network traffic data. This paper proposes two approaches, one utilizing Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and another without PCA, to compare their performance. Robust scaling and encoding techniques are applied as preprocessing steps. The experiment outcomes demonstrate a noteworthy improvement in the accuracy of DDoS attack detection in IoT devices by integrating PCA and Robust Scaler. Notably, the Random Forest and KNN classifiers demonstrate exceptional performance with an accuracy of 99.87 % and 99.14 %, respectively, while Naïve Bayes shows a lower accuracy of 87.14 %. The findings from this experiment contribute valuable insights into enhancing the security of IoT devices against DDoS attacks. The proposed approach showcases the importance of appropriate preprocessing techniques in achieving robust intrusion detection systems for IoT environments.

This paper proposes a new robust watermarking method for securing color medical images, where the proposed method relies on combining Slant, Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), and quaternion Fourier-Transform (QFT). The stimulus behind this combination is to improve the invisibility and durability of the proposed method. First, the input cover image is split into four equal parts for fast computation and then encrypted using one-time padding (OTP) encryption to increase robustness. Slant transform is applied to encrypted blocks to increase image compaction. The SVD is applied to the transformed image blocks to preserve quality during the embedding process. Finally, the QFT is applied to increase visual imperceptibility. The binary watermark is first compressed using SVD, scrambled using Arnold encryption to raise security, and then embedded in the modified QFT coefficients. The extraction procedures are the inverse operations of the embedding procedures. The proposed method achieves a good tradeoff between invisibility and robustness compared to existing schemes versus many geometrical, processing, and hybrid attacks. Also, the proposed method attains high visual imperceptibility. The extracted watermark seems to be the original watermark with minimum BER and high NC values. Empirical findings indicate that the proposed method is giving better invisibility and robustness results while maintaining a high capacity compared to other existing watermarking methods.

Enterococcus faecalis plays the key role in endodontic infections and is responsible for the formation of biofilm on dentin, which causes a resistance against periradicular lesions treatment, consequently the aim of this study is to use nanoparticles entrapping anibacterial agents coated with chitosan that in authors previous study showed a successful in vitro biofilm inhibition, additionally incorporated in thermoresponsive gel.to benefit nanoparticles` small size, and the positive charge of their surfaces that binds with the negatively charged surface of bacterial cell causing its destruction, in addition to the sustained release pattern of the drug based nanoparticles in gel. Therefore, Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP) encapsulated in PLGA nanoparticles coated with chitosan (CIP-CS-PLGA-NPs), in addition to free CIP, were incorporated in Pluronic® 407/188 to form thermosensitive gels (F1) and (F2), respectively. The thermosensitive gels were tested with regards to rheology, gelling temperature and the release pattern of the drug. A clinical study of the efficacy of F1 and F2 as antibacterial treatments was conducted on patients followed by a comparative studies against CIP and Ca(OH)2 pastes in terms of biofilm inhibition assay and total bacterial reduction count and percent.The results revealed that F1 and F2 exhibited gelation temperature of 36.9 ± 0.3 °C and 36.0 ± 0.4 °C, viscosity was 15,000 ± 360.6 and 7023.3 ± 296.8 cP respectively. The cumulative release of F1 and F2 after 72 h was 50.03% ± 0.7345 and 77.98% ± 3.122 respectively. F1 was the most efficient treatment against recurrent E.faecalis infection in endodontics that was evident by the highest total bacterial reduction count and percent and biofilm inhibition percent that were recorded in the group treated with F1followed by the group treated with F2. Nanocarriers succeeded in carrying the drug deeply in the root canal and sustaining its effect to abolish the obstinate E. faecalis recurrent infection and its biofilm formation.

Recently, several countries have been trying hard to facilitate the integration of disabled people into their societies by ensuring equal opportunities through ease of access to social services, daily human necessities, and the labor market. Deafness is considered one of the major disabilities separating the deaf from their society. To integrate the deaf fully into society, a two-way mode of communication is required: one from the deaf to the hearing people, and the other from the hearing to the deaf. Communication from the hearing person to the deaf is generally easy and can be done through speech recognition and text-to-sign representations, but communication from the deaf to the hearing is somewhat difficult and requires a sign recognition module that recognizes the sign motions from the deaf and translates it to a text; following this, a speech synthesis module will translate this text to speech. To build the sign recognition module, a sign language dataset is required. This paper contributes to the literature by introducing a comprehensive survey of 17 Arabic sign language datasets and by developing a well-organized framework that is used to build a sign language dataset. This paper also contributes to the literature by creating the largest Saudi Sign Language (SSL) database—the King Saud University Saudi-SSL (KSU-SSL data-base)—with 293 signs, 33 signers, 145,035 samples, and 10 domains (healthcare, common, alpha-bets, verbs, pronouns and adverbs, numbers, days, kings, family, and regions). This paper also contributes to the literature by introducing a convolutional graph neural network (CGCN) architecture for sign language recognition and applying the proposed architecture to the built KSU-SSL database. The architecture is made up of a small number of separable 3DGCN layers, and is augmented with a spatial attention mechanism. This study is a part of the project that aims to develop a two-way communication system for Saudi deaf individuals.

Model predictive control (MPC) is recently emerging as an efficient and promising technique for the control of power converters. In the conventional MPC algorithm, the control objectives are usually estimated and evaluated for a large/definite number of switching states. Since prediction and evaluation are done for all possible states, massive amounts of estimations are needed, moreover, the computational burden is more challenging with the increase of control objectives. In this paper, a computationally efficient version of the finite control set-MPC (FCS-MPC) is proposed to decrease the calculation effort of the MPC algorithm likewise minimizing its execution time to enforce its vast application for the control of three-phase power converters. The suggested procedure is to eliminate the current predictions as well as reduce the number of available switching states that need to be estimated by the algorithm which reduces considerably the amount of time consumed by these computations. The studied techniques achieved nearly the same performance with an interesting reduction in the algorithm execution time accomplished by the proposed modified FCS-MPC algorithms.

Hydrocarbon production from shale reservoirs is inherently inefficient and challenging since these are low permeability plays. In addition, there is a limited understanding of the fundamentals and the controlling mechanisms, further complicating how to optimize these plays. Herein, we summarize our experimental and computational efforts to reveal unconventional shale fundamentals and devise development strategies to enhance extraction efficiency with a minimal environmental footprint. Integrating these fundamentals with machine learning, we outline a pathway to improve the predictive power of our models, which enhances the forecast quality of production, thereby improving the economics of operations in unconventional reservoirs. We will discuss the main processes involving the matrix, hydraulic fractures, enhanced oil recovery, and carbon dioxide sequestration. In addition, we present science-informed workflows and platforms to optimize pressure-drawdown at a site, enable real-time reservoir management, accelerate numerical modeling and quantify uncertainty. We summarize our insights on pressure-drawdown optimization to maximize recovery while considering the lifetime of the well. In addition, we demonstrate our work on the hybridization of physics-based prediction and machine learning, whereby accurate synthetic data (combined with available site data) can enable the application of machine learning methods for rapid forecasting and optimization. Consequently, the workflow and platform are readily extendable to operations at other sites, plays and basins.

Interpreting geophysical data requires solving nonlinear optimization problem(s) in inversion. Analytical methods such as least-square have some intrinsic limitations, which include slow convergence and dimensionality, making heuristic-based swarm intelligence a better alternative. Large-scale nonlinear optimization problems in inversion can be solved effectively using a technique within the swarm intelligence family called Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). This study evaluates the inversion of geoelectrical resistivity data with global particle swarm optimization (GPSO). We attempted to invert field vertical electrical sounding data for a multi-layered 1-D earth model using the developed particle swarm optimization algorithm. The result of the PSO-interpreted VES data was compared with that of the least square inversion result from Winresist 1.0. According to the PSO-interpreted VES results, satisfactory solutions may be attained with a swarm of 200 or fewer particles, and convergence can be reached in fewer than 100 iterations. The GPSO inversion approach has a maximum capacity of 100 iterations, more than the least square inversion algorithm of the Winresist, which has a maximum capacity of 30 iterations. The misfit error of GPSO inversion is 6.14×10−7, much lower than that of the least square inversion of 4.0. The GPSO inversion model has lower and upper limit values of the geoelectric layer parameters model to fit the true model better. The limitations of the developed PSO inversion scheme include a slower execution time of the inversion procedures than the least-square inversion. There is a need for a priori knowledge of the number of layers from borehole reports in the study area. The PSO inversion scheme, however, estimates inverted models closer to the true solutions with greater accuracy than the least-square inversion scheme.

Truffle, the hypogeous, ascomycetous macrofungus, has been recognized as a delicacy for centuries, and it is gaining elevated status in the culinary domain. The chemical composition and biological activities of aqueous extract and ground material of two desert Tunisian Tirmania nivea and Terfezia boudieri were studied for the first time. Using three assays antioxidant activity of the aqueous extract and ground material of the two truffles were investigated. Indeed, the aqueous extract and ground material of Terfezia boudieri showed the highest capacity for the DPPH scavenging test (IC50 = 0.18 mg/mL) and with regard to the chelating power of iron (IC50 = 0.22 mg/mL). At the same time, the highest capacity for iron reduction was recorded in the crude material of Tirmania nivea. Besides, the total phenolic, flavonoid, flavanol, tannin, and proanthocyanidin contents of both truffles extracts were determined. The ground material showed the best antibacterial activity for two ascomycetes against seven strains of bacteria. HPLC analysis of aqueous extracts showed that the predominant phenolic compounds in T. boudieri and T. nivea were gallic acid (33.25%) and myricetin (52.91%). Therefore, these truffles are a source of natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agents and could be used as a potential health food.

Introduction: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare but potentially fatal soft tissue infection characterized by its aggressive nature. This case report highlights a unique and atypical presentation of NF associated with colorectal cancer. Case presentation: A 76-year-old male with no significant medical history presented with left knee pain and rapidly progressing septic shock. Clinical examination revealed skin necrosis, inflammation, and swelling in the left thigh and inguinal region. Laboratory investigations showed leukocytosis and elevated C-reactive protein levels. Computed tomography angiography revealed fluid and gas tracking along fascial planes in the left thigh. Surgical intervention revealed NF in the thigh and abdominal wall, with the underlying cause being a perforated sigmoid colon cancer. Conclusion: Recognizing the polymorphic clinical manifestations of NF and its potential association with underlying abdominal pathology can aid in early diagnosis and improve patient outcomes. This report serves as a reminder of the life-threatening nature of NF and the necessity for rapid and comprehensive management.

The near-net-shape manufacturing in additive manufactured and cast of Al-Si alloys results in a heterogeneous solidification and cooling of the parts, leading to significant gradients in microstructural and defect features as well as deformation behavior. In this paper, an elastic-plastic fracture mechanical model for uniform fatigue damage tolerance assessment of Al-Si alloys was further qualified and extended for a uniform view of different testing volumes as well as various stress ratios between R = -2…0.5 based on the fracture mechanical approaches of Murakami (√area) and Shiozawa for a reliable main crack defect-based mechanical design of fatigue-loaded structures. The linear-elastic fracture mechanical (LEFM) approaches of Murakami, Murakami-Schijve and Shiozawa were used to calculate defect-based lifetime curves, where the cyclic stress intensity factor (ΔK) at the failure-initiating defect (√area) was used to describe the local stress concentration conditions (so-called K-N curves) instead of nominal stress-based S-N curves. The LEFM-based K-N curves did not allow a unified assessment of fatigue behavior. Therefore, the cyclic stress-strain (CSS) behavior (K’, n’) was used for a plasticity-modification of the LEFM approach based on the elastic-plastic fracture mechanical (EPFM) approach of Fischer by calculating the effective cyclic J integral (ΔJeff) to plot J-based K-N curves, called Kj-N curves. This EPFM approach could be qualified for a uniform and reliable fatigue damage tolerance assessment of AM and sand cast Al-Si alloys for the HCF regime.

Laser-based Electronic Distance Meters (EDMs) are used extensively to measure inner/outer dimensions in constructions and large volumes. Therefore, it needs to be calibrated regularly to assure its proper function. In this paper, a distance measurement system based on Opto-Electronic Oscillator (OEO) is used for EDM calibration. The calibration is performed in three steps; the first step is to construct a reference OEO system using off-the-shelf optical telecommunication components. Then, the OEO system is used to calibrate an indoor baseline consisting of eleven distances ranging from 2.4 to 58 m. Finally, the calibrated baseline is used to calibrate the EDM.

Numerical modeling analysis was used to assess the suitable electrical resistivity arrays for the characterization of geological structures, including dyke, horst, graben, sub-vertical, and vertical structures. These geological structures usually make up the aquifers interested in the hydrogeological evaluation of crystalline basement terrains. Six electrode configurations, including Wenner alpha (α), Wenner beta (β), Wenner gamma (γ), Schlumberger array, dipole-dipole array, and pole-dipole array, were used to assess the geological structures for groundwater exploration. The synthetic models of the geological structures were generated using RES2DMOD code, and 5% noise was added to all the models. The generated models were inverted using the RES2DINV code. The results show that the most suitable arrays for dyke and graben structures are Wenner alpha, while Wenner beta is the most suitable for the horst structure. The Schlumberger array was the best for both sub-vertical and vertical structures. This study has demonstrated the efficacy of numerical modeling in assessing the best resistivity arrays for 2D electrical resistivity imaging for groundwater exploration prior to geophysical field investigation.

Currently, the smartphone devices have become an essential part of our daily activities. Smartphone’ users run various essential applications (such as banking and e-health Apps), which contains very confidential information (e.g., credit card number and its PIN). Typically, the smartphone’s user authentication is achieved using mechanisms (password or security pattern) to verify the user identity. Although these mechanisms are cheap, simple, and quick enough for frequent logins, they are vulnerable to attacks such as shoulder surfing or smudge attack. This problem could be addressed by authenticating the users using their behaviour (i.e., touch behaviour) while using their smartphones. Such behaviours include finger’s pressure, size, and pressure time while tapping keys. Selecting features (from these behaviours) could play an important role in the authentication process’s performance. This paper aims to propose an efficient authentication method providing an implicit authentication for smartphone users while not imposing an additional cost of special hardware and addressing the limited smartphone capabilities. We first investigated feature selection techniques from the filter and wrapper approaches and then used the best one to propose our implicit authentication method. The random forest classifier is used to evaluate these techniques. It is also used to achieve the classification task in our authentication method. Using a public dataset, the experimental results showed that the filter-based technique (i.e., rank aggregation) is the best feature selection to build an implicit authentication method for the smartphone environment. It showed accuracy results around 97.80% using only 25 features out of 53 features (i.e., require less mobile resources (memory and processing power) to authenticate users. At the same time, the results showed that our method has less error rate: 2.03 FAR, 0.04 FRR, and 1.04 ERR, comparing to the related work. These promising results would be used to develop a mobile application that allows implicit authentication of legitimate owners while avoiding the traditional authentication problems and using fewer smartphone resources.

Cardiac hydatid cyst is very a rare manifestation of hydatid disease. It is potentially life threatening, and characterized by its clinical polymorphism, thus making an early preoperative diagnosis challenging. The sole curative treatment of this disease is surgery, and it should be done as emergent as possible after diagnosis, in order to minimize the risk of serious complications like embolism and anaphylaxis.We report a case of a 22 years old male who had multivesicular cyst formation in the left ventricle free wall, which was measuring 14 × 8 cm. The patient underwent surgery in order to remove this hydatid cyst, by using the cardiopulmonary bypass, and his postoperative course was unremarkable. Resumen: El quiste hidatídico cardiaco es una manifestación muy rara de la enfermedad hidatídica y potencialmente mortal, caracterizada por su polimorfismo clínico, lo que dificulta su diagnóstico preoperatorio temprano. La cirugía sigue siendo el único tratamiento curativo del quiste hidatídico cardiaco. Este debe ser tratado lo más pronto posible después del diagnóstico, ya que minimiza el riesgo de complicaciones graves como embolia y anafilaxia.Presentamos el caso de un varón de 22 años que presenta una formación de quiste multivesicular en la pared libre del ventrículo izquierdo de 14 × 8 cm. El paciente fue intervenido quirúrgicamente mediante bypass cardiopulmonar para extirpar el quiste hidatídico de la pared libre del ventrículo izquierdo, con un resultado satisfactorio para el curso postoperatorio.

Huge quantities of byproducts/wastes generated in onion processing are usually discarded, but they are excellent sources of bioactive compounds and phytochemicals. However, with growing interest in the sustainable use of resources and the circular economy to reduce adverse impacts on the environment, food processing wastes such as onion peel/skin can be extracted and employed as inputs in developing or reformulating nutrient supplements, and pharmacological drugs. This review highlights major bioactive components, especially total phenolics, total flavonoid, quercetin and its derivatives present in onion peel/skin and their therapeutic applications as cardioprotective, neuroprotective, antiobesity, antidiabetic, anticancer and antimicrobial agents. The present review emphasized that onion peel is one of the important agricultural by-products which is rich in bioactive compounds and can be utilized as health promoting ingredient especially in pharmacological and biomedical fields. Thus, with increasing burden of life style disorders/non-communicable diseases, finding suitable natural alternative for their treatment is one major concern of the researchers and onion peel and its extract can be exploited as a prime ingredient.

Orthogonal moments are used to represent digital images with minimum redundancy. Orthogonal moments with fractional-orders show better capabilities in digital image analysis than integer-order moments. In this work, the authors present new fractional-order shifted Gegenbauer polynomials. These new polynomials are used to define a novel set of orthogonal fractional-order shifted Gegenbauer moments (FrSGMs). The proposed method is applied in gray-scale image analysis and recognition. The invariances to rotation, scaling and translation (RST), are achieved using invariant fractional-order geometric moments. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the proposed FrSGMs and compare with the classical orthogonal integer-order Gegenbauer moments (GMs) and the existing orthogonal fractional-order moments. The new FrSGMs outperformed GMs and the existing orthogonal fractional-order moments in terms of image recognition and reconstruction, RST invariance, and robustness to noise.

In the present study, the effect of enzyme pretreatment on essential oil recoveries from sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) leaves was evaluated. Moreover, the consideration on the use of hydrodistilled residue by-products as a source of bioactive phytochemicals with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and repellent effects against the stored-grain pest Tribolium castaneum was examined. Results showed that the enzymatic pretreatment increased the extraction yield of essential oil by 400, 417, and 478% in hemicellulase-, cellulase-, and viscozyme-treated samples, respectively. Phenylpropanoids including methyl cinnamate, methyl eugenol, eugenol and estragol were found as the main components, and were particularly abundant in cellulase-treated samples. From the hydrodistilled residue of enzyme-treated samples, better recoveries of total phenols (TPC) (258.3–470.9 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoids (TFC) (59.4–94.3 mg QE/g extract) were observed. Using the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, a strong antioxidant activity of the rosmarinic-rich extract was observed. Such an activity which was mediated through electron transfer mechanism was highly correlated with the TPC, TFC and rosmarinic acid content. The in vitro bioassay showed that methanol extract (6.29 and 12.58 µL/cm2) had repellent activity against the stored-grain pest Tribolium castaneum. These results suggest the potential of enzyme pretreatment to promote the use of hydrodistilled residue by-products as a valuable source of natural antioxidants and repellents ingredients.

In treatment planning, multiple imaging modalities can be employed to improve the accuracy of tumor delineation but this can be costly. This study aimed to compare the interobserver consistency of using dual energy computed tomography (DECT) versus magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for delineating tumors in the head and neck cancer (HNC) re-irradiation scenario. Twenty-three patients with recurrent HNC and had planning DECT and MRI were identified. Contoured tumor volumes by seven radiation oncologists were compared. Overall, T1c MRI performed the best with median DSC of 0.58 (0–0.91) for T1c. T1c MRI provided higher interobserver agreement for skull base sites and 60 kV DECT provided higher interobserver agreement for non-skull base sites.

New low-molecular-weight gelators based on l-phenylalanine derivatives bearing long alkyl chains with different lengths were synthesized via one synthetic step. These gelators [i.e. 1 and 2] were nontoxic, biodegradable and prepared using naturally occurring starting materials. The gelation ability was investigated using different solvents and oils. 1H NMR and FTIR studies revealed that the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the amide groups had a primary importance for supramolecular self-assembly process. In addition, the participation of the van der Waals interaction between the alkyl chains and π-π stacking supported the gelation process. The melting enthalpies were calculated. SEM was used for studying the morphology of the prepared xerogels. Moreover, the gelators succeeded to be used as an efficient tool for selective removal of several oils in their mixtures with water via gelation. The processing of tomato fruit into puree, juices, ketchup, sauces, and dried powders generates a significant amount of waste in the form of tomato pomace, which includes seeds and skin. Tomato processing by-products, particularly seeds, are reservoirs of health-promoting macromolecules, such as proteins (bioactive peptides), carotenoids (lycopene), polysaccharides (pectin), phytochemicals (flavonoids), and vitamins (α-tocopherol). Health-promoting properties make these bioactive components suitable candidates for the development of novel food and nutraceutical products. This review comprehensively demonstrates the bioactive compounds of tomato seeds along with diverse biomedical activities of tomato seed extract (TSE) for treating cardiovascular ailments, neurological disorders, and act as antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial agent. Utilization of bioactive components can improve the economic feasibility of the tomato processing industry and may help to reduce the environmental pollution generated by tomato by-products.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare cause of acute myocardial infarction (ACS). We report a case of acute coronary syndrome due to SCAD of the right coronary artery. Diagnosis was based on clinical presentation and coronary angiography, and confirmed by optical coherence tomography which guided our treatment strategy. (Level of Difficulty: Beginner.)

Background and aims: Monitoring oral diseases is needed to allocate resources, plan health services and train dental workforce. Caries is one of the oral diseases most commonly included in oral health surveillance systems. The present study assessed (1) caries data availability in the administrative regions of Saudi Arabia and (2) factors associated with this availability. Methods: We collected caries data in the period 2008–2018 in Saudi Arabia (outcome variable). The explanatory variables included region-level factors: (a) socio-economic indicators (percentage of individuals with university education, percentage of category A governorates, percentage of owned houses, households with computers, internet and smart phones) and, (b) oral health research potential indicators (number of Dental Public Health (DPH) specialists, Ministry of Health (MoH) dentist to population ratio and number of dental schools). ArcGIS was used for data visualization and logistic regression was used for analysis. Results: Twenty-two studies provided caries data for 46.2% of the regions which were inhabited by 84.7% of the population. Region-level data availability was associated with the number of dental schools (OR = 1.63) with 61.5% of the regions correctly classified. More regions were correctly classified when population to MoH dentist ratio (76.9%) and the number of DPH specialists (92.3%) were included. Conclusions: Caries data were available for half of the administrative regions in Saudi Arabia and data availability was associated with higher number of dental schools. The presence of DPH specialist provided the critical mass to collect caries data. Study Region: Three major river basins the Cheliff, Tafna and Macta in North-West Algeria. Study focus: The purpose of this work is not to test the different climate models but rather to study the sensitivity of hydrological parameters to future climate change. This is achieved using the GR2M hydrological model and climate scenario data from the CNRM-CM5 model. New hydrological insights: In terms of observed trends, the monthly flows decreased significantly between 1970 and 1999, mainly due to the decrease in precipitation combined with the increase in the potential evapotranspiration (PET), caused by rising temperatures. According to the RCPs8.5 and 4.5 scenarios projections, the decrease in Winter discharges will continue in the future. This study investigates the performance of soil and OMW microfloras in OMW organic matter humification in soil. In order to highlight the role of OMW and soil microfloras in the processes of OMW organic matter humification, either OMW or soil was sterilized with autoclaving. The study was carried out in microcosms of 1l containing 500 g of raw or sterilized soil, to which was added 200 ml of raw or sterilized OMW. After 24 months of incubation, the amount of phenolic compounds in the different microcosms was statistically indifferent compared to the control. However, TG-DTA and FTIR analysis of soil humic acids showed that recalcitrant OMW phenolic compounds remain in soil humus in the microcosm: sterilized OMW + raw soil, even after 24 months. Results show that humic acids detected in presence of OMW microflora are loaded with proteins and carbonated compounds and deprived of phenolic compounds and aliphatics with long chain, while humic acids detected in absence of OMW microflora are loaded with phenolic compounds.

The date palm is one of the most valuable fruit trees in the world. Most methods used for date fruit inspection, harvesting, grading, and classification are manual, which makes them ineffective in terms of both time and economy. Research on automated date fruit harvesting is limited as there is no public dataset for date fruits to aid in this. In this work, we present a comprehensive dataset for date fruits that can be used by the research community for multiple tasks including automated harvesting, visual yield estimation, and classification tasks. The dataset contains images of date fruit bunches of different date varieties, captured at different pre-maturity and maturity stages. These images cover multiple sets of variations such as multi-scale images, variable illumination, and different bagging states. We also marked date bunches for selected palms and measured the weights of the bunches, captured their images on a graph paper, and recorded 360° video of the palms. This dataset can help in advancing research and automating date palm agricultural applications, including robotic harvesting, fruit detection and classification, maturity analysis, and weight/yield estimation. Study region: North Algeria. Study focus: The semi-arid to arid Chéliff–Zahrez basin faced several droughts with severe impacts on agriculture due to the high temporal and spatial distribution of rainfall. We explored the potential of the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Markov chain models, the Drought Index and time series modelling to characterize meteorological drought. Time series of annual precipitation (1960–2010) from 65 meteorological stations across the basin were used. The basin was subdivided into five subbasins to account for spatial variability. New hydrological insights for the regions: The analysis of the Standardized Precipitation Index showed few droughts in the period 1960–1970, whereas in the 1990s a multi-year drought occurred with SPIs as low as −2 (extremely dry) in many subbasins. The Markov chain analysis learnt that the probability of having two consecutive drought years appears to be higher in the southern subbasins. The Drought Index derived from transition probabilities indicates that the southern and the southwestern parts of the Chéliff–Zahrez basin are most drought prone. Time series modelling was applied to compute the SPI for different return periods (6‐17 years). Eleven models were tested and it appeared that the Asymmetric Power Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (APARCH) approach was best performing based on several information criteria. For a return period of 17 years, the SPI is lower than −1.5 (severely dry) in many subbasins. The Sebaou river valley (SRV) is located in the northern Tell region of Algeria, and is a significant source of ground and surface waters because of its geographical context within the northern Algerian Tell region. The water resources from the study area are important for both local people and environmental scientists since the area is undergoing significant industrial development. Therefore a quantitative and qualitative study of the surface and groundwater can help us to establish the current physico-chemical variables of the water resources, allowing comparisons with future studies. In this study we present the most comprehensive survey of the hydrogeological properties of this region reported to date, including the spatio-temporal variation of physico-chemical variables as studied by principal component analysis. This method allowed us to confirm the principal chemical facies and to differentiate the waters of the middle and upper Sebaou river from the waters of river tributaries, specifically the Aissi and Bougdoura rivers. The quality of these water resources is declining as a result of local development and so this study is expected to provide a valuable resource for future water management strategies in the region.

The design of Moment Resisting Steel Frames (MRSFs) is usually governed by drift limits rather than strength because of their high flexibility. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of a 6-story MRSF designed according to the Egyptian code with three different levels of allowable story drift limits: 0.5%, 0.75% and 1.0%. Seismic evaluation in this study has been carried out by static pushover analysis and time history earthquake analysis. Ten ground motions with different PGA levels are used in the analysis. The mean plus one standard deviation values of the roof-drift ratio, the maximum story drift ratio and the maximum beam- and column-strain responses are used as the basis for the seismic performance evaluations. The results obtained indicated that the strength and the initial stiffness of the designed frames decrease as the allowed story drift limit of the frame increases. Two of the designed frames exhibit maximum story drifts that are higher than the allowed limits specified by the code. The maximum story drift and beam-strain responses of the designed frames under the earthquake loading increase with the increase in the allowable story drift limits.

The presence of natural voids and cavities in subsurface karstic limestones causes severe problem for civil engineering and environmental management. The presence of such features hinders the extension of urbanizations particularly in the new metropolitan. The eastern part of Saudi Arabia contains various types of karstic limestone, sinkholes, solution cavities and voids. In this context, geophysical methods particularly electrical resistivity technique is used as a cost-effective solution for investigating subsurface caves, voids, and shallow weathered zones. 2-D electrical resistivity data sets have been acquired along seven profiles in the new urbanization at Al Hassa area. Data processing has been carried out taking into consideration the response of synthetic models, which simulates physical models of the most common karstic features in the area. The results are very useful to determine the extension of shallow weathered zones and to locate different cavities underneath them. The hard limestone bedrock can also be detected and traced along the surveyed profiles.

Doxorubicin (Dox) is widely used as a chemotherapy drug, while anethole (AN) is primarily known as the main aromatic component in various plant species. This research focused on the impact of AN on the cardiac and renal toxicity induced by Dox and to understand the underlying mechanisms. For cardiac toxicity, Wistar rats were categorized into four groups: a Control group; a Dox group, where rats received 2.5 mg/kg of Dox intraperitoneally every other day; and two Dox + AN groups, where animals were administered Dox (2.5 mg/kg/every other day, IP) along with 125 mg/kg or 250 mg/kg of AN, respectively. The renal toxicity study included similar groups, with the Dox group receiving a single dose of 20 mg/kg of Dox intraperitoneally on the tenth day, and the Dox + AN groups receiving 125 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg of AN for two weeks, alongside the same dose of Dox (20 mg/kg, IP, once on the 10th day). Parameters assessed included ECG, cardiac injury markers (CK, CK-MB, and LDH), and kidney function tests (Cr, BUN, uric acid, LDL, Kim-1, NGAL, and CysC). Antioxidant activity, lipid peroxidation, inflammation, and apoptotic markers were also monitored in heart and renal tissues. Gene expression levels of the TLR4/MyD88/NFκB pathway, along with Bax and Bcl-2, were evaluated. Dox significantly altered ECG, elevated cardiac injury markers, and renal function markers. It also augmented gene expressions of TLR4/MyD88/NFκB, amplified oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines and apoptotic markers. Conversely, AN reduced cardiac injury markers and kidney function tests, improved ECG, diminished TLR4/MyD88/NFκB gene expression, and alleviated oxidative stress by increasing antioxidant enzyme activities and reducing inflammatory cytokines. AN also enhanced Bcl-2 levels and inhibited Bax and the cleavage of caspase-3 and 9. Desulfovibrio vulgaris biofilm was pre-grown on Ti coupons for 7 d and then the biofilm covered coupons were incubated again with fresh culture media with 10 % (reduced) and 100 % (normal) carbon source levels, respectively. After the pre-growth, sessile D. vulgaris cell count reached 10 7 cells/cm 2 . The sessile cell counts were 2 × 10 7 and 4.2 × 10 7 cells/cm 2 for 10 % and 100 % carbon sources, respectively after the subsequent 7 d starvation test. The maximum pit depth after the 7 d pre-growth was 4.7 µm. After the additional 7 d of the starvation test, the maximum pit depth increased to 5.1 µm for 100 % carbon source vs 6.2 µm for 10 % carbon source. Corrosion current density (i corr ) from potentiodynamic polarization data at the end of the 7 d starvation test for 10 % carbon source was more than 3 times of that for 100 % carbon source, despite a reduced sessile cell count with 10 % carbon source. The polarization resistance (R p ) started to decrease within minutes after 20 ppm (w/w) riboflavin (electron mediator) injection. Background: Exploring new drugs for the management of myocardial infarction (MI) is crucial, as MI is a major contributor to mortality worldwide. Anethole, a naturally occurring essential oil component, has numerous medicinal, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic purposes. This study explored the potential action of anethole to protect myocytes against MI injure., Methods: Wistar rats were divided into five groups: normal; anethole; and isoproterenol (ISO) groups in addition to two groups of ISO + anethole (125 and 250 mg/kg). All anethole groups were administered the oil component for 30 days, and all ISO groups were challenged with ISO on the 28th and 29th days. Parameters measured included infracted area, ECG, cardiac markers, the expression of Keap 1, nuclear Nrf2, and heme oxygenase-1, as well as the expression of TLR4 and MYD88 together with subsequent downstream oxidative stress, inflammatory, and apoptotic markers., Results: Anethole reduced infarct region, degenerated cardiac indicators levels, amended ECG alterations, and diminished myocardial necrosis. Anethole reduced Keap-1, activated Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, increased mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme activities, declined the TLR4/MYD88 pathway, and ameliorated myocardial inflammation and cell death markers., Conclusion: Anethole may retain a cardio-protective potential by controlling myocardial oxidative stress (through Nrf2 pathway) and diminishing inflammation and apoptosis via the TLR4/MYD88 pathway., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. EET (extracellular electron transfer) is behind MIC (microbiologically influenced corrosion) of carbon steel by SRB (sulfate reducing bacteria). This work evaluated 20 ppm (w/w) riboflavin (an electron mediator) acceleration of C1018 carbon steel MIC by Desulfovibrio ferrophilus IS5 in enriched artificial seawater (EASW) after 7-d incubation in anaerobic vials at 28 °C. Twenty ppm riboflavin did not significantly change cell growth or alter the corrosion product varieties, but it led to 52% increase in weight loss and 105% increase in pit depth, compared to the control without 20 ppm riboflavin. With 20 ppm riboflavin supplement in EASW, D. ferrophilus yielded weight loss-based corrosion rate of 1.57 mm/y (61.8 mpy), and pit depth growth rate of 2.88 mm/y (113 mpy), highest reported for short-term pure-strain SRB MIC of carbon steel. Electrochemical tests in 450 mL glass cells indicated that the biofilm responded rather quickly to the riboflavin injection (20 ppm in broth) to the culture medium. Polarization resistance (R p ) began to decrease within minutes after injection. Within 2 h, the riboflavin injection led to 31% decrease in R p and 35% decrease in R ct  + R f from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Background: Geraniol, a natural monoterpene, is a component of many plant essential oils. It contains many medicinal and pharmacological properties. Doxorubicin is an anticancer drug; however, its clinical usage is limited due to its cumulative and dose-dependent cardiotoxicity. This study investigates geraniol as a protective agent against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity and explores possible underlying mechanisms of action., Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated into five groups. Groups 1 and 2 were administered saline and geraniol 200 mg/kg/day/orally, respectively, for 15 days. Group 3 was administered intraperitoneal doxorubicin (5 mg/kg/IP on the 5th, 10th and 15th days to achieve a cumulative dose of 15 mg/kg) to induce cardiotoxicity. The fourth and fifth groups were treated with either geraniol 100 mg/kg or 200 mg/kg orally and doxorubicin to equal the doxorubicin dose administered to Group 3., Results: Treatment with geraniol significantly ameliorated cardiac damage and restored serum cardiac injury marker levels in doxorubicin treated animals. Geraniol upregulated Nrf2 and HO-1 expression, elevated total antioxidant capacity, decreased the nuclear accumulation of kappa-light-chain enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), decreased the phosphorylation and degradation of nuclear factor of kappa light polypeptide gene enhancer in B-cells inhibitor, alpha (IκBα), suppressed tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), and interleukin-18 (IL-18) levels, and restored the levels of Bax and caspase-3 and 9 in heart tissue., Conclusion: Geraniol may function as a potential activator of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), which subsequently improves Nrf2-dependent antioxidative signaling, diminishes apoptosis and subdues the inflammatory response. Objectives: Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is a last-tier therapy in the treatment of raised intracranial pressure after traumatic brain injury (TBI). We report the association of comparative radiographic factors in predicting functional outcomes after DC in patients with severe TBI., Methods: A retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database of cases between 2015 and 2018 at an academic tertiary care hospital was carried out. Univariate and multivariable regression analyses were performed for an array of comparative radiographic variables (pre- and post-DC) in relationship to functional outcome according to Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended (GOSE) at 180 days. GOSE was further dichotomized into favorable (GOSE:5-8) and unfavorable (GOSE:0-4) functional outcomes. All associations were reported as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI)., Results: Statistical analysis included a cohort of 43 patients with a median age of 30.5 years (range: 18-62 years). The median GOSE at 180 days was 7. Multivariable regression analysis after adjusting for confounding variables (age, sex, comorbidities, site of surgery and size of decompression) showed that comparative radiographic findings of midline shift (MLS) > 10 mm (OR 3.2 (95% CI 1.25-8.04); P = 0.01); external cerebral herniation (ECH) > 2.5 cm (OR 2.5 [95% CI 1.18-5.2]; P = 0.02); and effacement of basal cisterns (OR 3.9 [95%CI 1.1-13.9]; P = 0.03), were significant independent predictors of poor functional outcome at 180 days after DC for severe TBI. However, the presence of infarction (OR 2.7 [95%CI 0.43-17.2]; P = 0.28) and absence of gray-white matter differentiation (OR 0.18 [95%CI 0.03-1.2]; P = 0.07) did not reach statistical significance., Conclusions: The comparative radiographic findings that include MLS > 10mm, ECH > 2.5cm, and effacement of basal cisterns are predictive of poor functional outcome in severe TBI., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Tacrolimus trough and dose requirements vary dramatically between individuals of European and African American ancestry. These differences are less well described in other populations. We conducted an observational, prospective, multicenter study from which 2595 kidney transplant recipients of European, African, Native American, and Asian ancestry were studied for tacrolimus trough, doses, and genetic determinants of metabolism. We studied the well-known variants and conducted a CYP3A4/5 gene-wide analysis to identify new variants. Daily doses, and dose-normalized troughs were significantly different between the four groups (P < .001). CYP3A5*3 (rs776746) was associated with higher dose-normalized tacrolimus troughs in all groups but occurred at different allele frequencies and had differing effect sizes. The CYP3A5*6 (rs10264272) and *7 (rs413003343) variants were only present in African Americans. CYP3A4*22 (rs35599367) was not found in any of the Asian ancestry samples. We identified seven suggestive variants in the CYP3A4/5 genes associated with dose-normalized troughs in Native Americans (P = 1.1 × 10 -5 -8.8 × 10 -6 ) and one suggestive variant in Asian Americans (P = 5.6 × 10 -6 ). Tacrolimus daily doses and dose-normalized troughs vary significantly among different ancestry groups. We identified potential new variants important in Asians and Native Americans. A simple, fast and accurate spectrophotometric method had been developed to determine lead (II), chromium (III) and barium (II) ions in pure forms and in spiked water samples using thoron (THO) as a reagent forming colored complexes. It was found that the formed complexes absorbed maximally at 539, 540 and 538nm for Pb(II)-THO, Cr(III)-THO and Ba(II)-THO complexes, respectively. The optimum experimental conditions for these complexes had been studied carefully. Beer's law was obeyed in the range 1-35, 1-70, and 1-45μgmL -1 for Pb (II), Cr(III) and Ba(II) ions with THO reagent, respectively. Different parameters such as linearity, selectivity, recovery, limits of quantification and detection, precision and accuracy were also evaluated in order to validate the proposed method. The results showed that, THO was effective in simultaneous determination of Pb(II), Cr(III) and Ba(III) ions in pure forms and in spiked water samples. Also, the results of the proposed method were compared with that obtained from atomic absorption spectrometry. The isolated solid complexes had been characterized using elemental analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), IR, mass spectrometry and TD-DFT calculations.
