Abstract

Laticifer cells are specialized plant cells that synthesize and accumulate latex. In fact, latex-bearing plants are only found in about 10% of flowering plant species, but many of them contain high-value secondary metabolites. In this review, we summarize the characteristics of latex-bearing plants. Additionally, the synthetic pathway and genes of secondary metabolites in Macleaya cordata and Cannabis sativa are described in detail.
