Abstract

J/ψ suppression has long been considered a sensitive signature of the formation of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In this letter, we present the first measurement of inclusive J/ψ production at mid-rapidity through the dimuon decay channel in Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV with the STAR experiment. These measurements became possible after the installation of the Muon Telescope Detector was completed in 2014. The J/ψ yields are measured in a wide transverse momentum (pT) range of 0.15 GeV/c to 12 GeV/c from central to peripheral collisions. They extend the kinematic reach of previous measurements at RHIC with improved precision. In the 0-10% most central collisions, the J/ψ yield is suppressed by a factor of approximately 3 for pT>5 GeV/c relative to that in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The J/ψ nuclear modification factor displays little dependence on pT in all centrality bins. Model calculations can qualitatively describe the data, providing further evidence for the color-screening effect experienced by J/ψ mesons in the QGP.

Abstract

We present the first measurement of the proton–Ω correlation function in heavy-ion collisions for the central (0–40%) and peripheral (40–80%) Au + Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). Predictions for the ratio of peripheral collisions to central collisions for the proton–Ω correlation function are sensitive to the presence of a nucleon–Ω bound state. These predictions are based on the proton–Ω interaction extracted from (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD calculations at the physical point. The measured ratio of the proton–Ω correlation function between the peripheral (small system) and central (large system) collisions is less than unity for relative momentum smaller than 40 MeV/c. Comparison of our measured correlation ratio with theoretical calculation slightly favors a proton–Ω bound system with a binding energy of ∼ 27 MeV.

Abstract

The inclusive J/ψ transverse momentum spectra and nuclear modification factors are reported at mid-rapidity (|y|<1.0) in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV taken by the STAR experiment. A suppression of J/ψ production, with respect to the production in p+p scaled by the number of binary nucleon–nucleon collisions, is observed in central Au+Au collisions at these three energies. No significant energy dependence of nuclear modification factors is found within uncertainties. The measured nuclear modification factors can be described by model calculations that take into account both suppression of direct J/ψ production due to the color screening effect and J/ψ regeneration from recombination of uncorrelated charm–anticharm quark pairs.

Abstract

We report the direct virtual photon invariant yields in the transverse momentum ranges 16Â GeV/c the production follows TAA scaling. Model calculations with contributions from thermal radiation and initial hard parton scattering are consistent within uncertainties with the direct virtual photon invariant yield.

Abstract

Azimuthal correlations of charged hadrons with direct-photon ( γdir ) and neutral-pion ( π0 ) trigger particles are analyzed in central Au+Au and minimum-bias p+p collisions at sNN=200 GeV in the STAR experiment. The charged-hadron per-trigger yields at mid-rapidity from central Au+Au collisions are compared with p+p collisions to quantify the suppression in Au+Au collisions. The suppression of the away-side associated-particle yields per γdir trigger is independent of the transverse momentum of the trigger particle ( pTtrig ), whereas the suppression is smaller at low transverse momentum of the associated charged hadrons ( pTassoc ). Within uncertainty, similar levels of suppression are observed for γdir and π0 triggers as a function of zT ( ≡pTassoc/pTtrig ). The results are compared with energy-loss-inspired theoretical model predictions. Our studies support previous conclusions that the lost energy reappears predominantly at low transverse momentum, regardless of the trigger energy.

Abstract

Dihadron angular correlations in d+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV are reported as a function of the measured zero-degree calorimeter neutral energy and the forward charged hadron multiplicity in the Au-beam direction. A finite correlated yield is observed at large relative pseudorapidity (Δη) on the near side (i.e. relative azimuth Δϕ∼0). This correlated yield as a function of Δη appears to scale with the dominant, primarily jet-related, away-side (Δϕ∼π) yield. The Fourier coefficients of the Δϕ correlation, Vn=〈cos⁡nΔϕ〉, have a strong Δη dependence. In addition, it is found that V1 is approximately inversely proportional to the mid-rapidity event multiplicity, while V2 is independent of it with similar magnitude in the forward (d-going) and backward (Au-going) directions.

Abstract

Fluctuations of conserved quantities such as baryon number, charge, and strangeness are sensitive to the correlation length of the hot and dense matter created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions and can be used to search for the QCD critical point. We report the first measurements of the moments of net-kaon multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV. The collision centrality and energy dependence of the mean ($M$), variance ($\sigma^2$), skewness ($S$), and kurtosis ($\kappa$) for net-kaon multiplicity distributions as well as the ratio $\sigma^2/M$ and the products $S\sigma$ and $\kappa\sigma^2$ are presented. Comparisons are made with Poisson and negative binomial baseline calculations as well as with UrQMD, a transport model (UrQMD) that does not include effects from the QCD critical point. Within current uncertainties, the net-kaon cumulant ratios appear to be monotonic as a function of collision energy., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

Flow harmonics ($v_n$) in the Fourier expansion of the azimuthal distribution of particles are widely used to quantify the anisotropy in particle emission in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The symmetric cumulants, $SC(m,n)$, are used to measure the correlations between different orders of flow harmonics. These correlations are used to constrain the initial conditions and the transport properties of the medium in theoretical models. In this Letter, we present the first measurements of the four-particle symmetric cumulants in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 and 200 GeV from data collected by the STAR experiment at RHIC. We observe that $v_{2}$ and $v_{3}$ are anti-correlated in all centrality intervals with similar correlation strengths from 39 GeV Au+Au to 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb (measured by the ALICE experiment). The $v_{2}$-$v_{4}$ correlation seems to be stronger at 39 GeV than at higher collision energies. The initial-stage anti-correlations between second and third order eccentricities are sufficient to describe the measured correlations between $v_{2}$ and $v_{3}$. The best description of $v_{2}$-$v_{4}$ correlations at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV is obtained with inclusion of the system's nonlinear response to initial eccentricities accompanied by the viscous effect with $\eta/s$ $>$ 0.08. Abstract

Objectives: We aimed to describe the bedside registered nurses perceived competence, attitudes, and challenges surrounding the management of patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) in the intensive care unit (ICU) and stepdown unit (SDU)., Research Methodology/design: An exploratory research was employed using a survey., Setting: Bedside participants were recruited via an electronic recruitment flyer circulated in online professional and social networking sites., Main Outcome Measures: Items consisted of a numeric rating scale, measuring competence and attitudes related to the management of patients with left ventricular assist devices. The one open-ended question asked the participants to write responses regarding challenges in left ventricular assist device care. Data were analysed using quantitative and qualitative analytics software., Results: A total of 36 intensive care unit and 35 stepdown unit bedside nurse (n = 71) from six regions of the United States responded. Overall mean scores for competency and attitude domains were ≥ 7.0. Intensive care nurses scored higher in competence and attitude when compared to stepdown unit nurses care of short-term left ventricular assist devices. Competence and attitude were positively associated with years of experience. 11. Multicenter experience with durable biventricular assist devices.

Abstract

Background: Severe right ventricular failure necessitating a right ventricular assist device (RVAD) complicates 6% to 11% of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implants. Patient outcomes for those receiving durable continuous-flow VADs in a biventricular configuration (i.e., BiVAD) have been reported in limited case series., Methods: Data from United States centers with ≥ 6 BiVAD implants were collected. Characteristics and outcomes of patients receiving contemporaneous (i.e., same surgery) vs staged implantation of the HVAD as a BiVAD were compared., Results: From 2011 to 2017, 46 patients received durable BiVADs and had the following characteristics: median age, 46 years (interquartile range [IQR], 19-67 years), non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (80%), bridge to transplant (83%), Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support Profile 1 or 2 (92%), use of temporary circulatory support (37%), right atrial pressure 19 mm Hg (IQR, 14-23 mm Hg), and cardiac index of 1.6 liters/min/m 2 (IQR, 1.2-2.1 liters/min/m 2 ). Operative mortality was 33%. Equal numbers of patients received a right atrial or right ventricular implant. Contemporaneous BiVAD implantation occurred in 31 patients (67%), and compared with 15 patients (33%) with staged implants, these patients had a shorter intensive care unit length of stay of 12 days (IQR, 7-23 days) vs 42 days (IQR, 28-48 days, p = 0.035) and were more likely to be discharged from the hospital on BiVAD support (61% vs 27%, p = 0.04). RVAD thrombosis developed in 17 patients (37%). Patients with contemporaneous BiVAD implants had a 1-year survival of 74% compared with 40% in staged BiVAD patients (p = 0.11)., Conclusions: Patients receiving durable BiVADs represent a critically ill patient population with severe biventricular failure who have high operative mortality and RVAD thrombosis rates. Abstract

In recent years, there has been increasing use of BRAF-inhibiting drugs for the treatment of various malignancies, including melanoma. However, these agents are associated with the development of other nonmelanoma skin lesions, in particular squamoproliferative lesions such as keratoacanthomas (KAs), squamous cell carcinomas, and BRAF inhibitor-associated verrucous keratoses. The molecular pathogenesis of these lesions is of interest, not only for therapeutic reasons, but also for the insight it might provide into the development of similar lesions in a sporadic setting. We used next-generation sequencing to compare the mutational profiles of lesions after treatment with a BRAF inhibitor, with similar lesions arising sporadically. HRAS mutations were common among the BRAF inhibitor-induced lesions, being identified in 56%, compared with 14% of lesions in the sporadic group (P = 0.002). Thus, despite similar histomorphological appearances, the underlying molecular mechanisms may be different. In addition, within the BRAF inhibitor-associated group, the lesions designated as KAs and BRAF inhibitor-associated verrucous keratoses had a similar mutational profile (mutations in PIK3CA, APC, and HRAS), which was distinct to that seen in squamous cell carcinomas (FGFR3, CDKN2A, and STK11). We have previously noted histological overlap between KAs and BRAF inhibitor-associated verrucous keratoses, and this finding supports the notion that they may represent morphological or temporal variants of a single lesion type., (Copyright © 2015 American Society for Investigative Pathology and the Association for Molecular Pathology. Abstract

Immunophenotyping is the method by which antibodies are used to detect cellular antigens in clinical samples. Although the major role is in the diagnosis and classification of haematological malignancies, applications have expanded over the past decade. Immunophenotyping is now used extensively for disease staging and monitoring, to detect surrogate markers of genetic aberrations, to identify potential immuno-therapeutic targets and to aid prognostic prediction. This expansion in applications has resulted from developments in antibodies, methodology, automation and data handling. In this review we describe recent advances in both the technology and applications for the analysis of haematological malignancies. We highlight the importance of the expanding repertoire of testing capability for diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic applications. Abstract

Background: Mobile phones play a central role in the lives of young people and are being increasingly recognized as valuable tools in health care. However, there is a paucity of studies exploring the use of mobile phones in youth outreach mental health services. Our outreach team's experience is that enabling youth to access their therapist directly through mobile phone improves engagement and retention, and short message service (SMS) in particular, is a useful tool for coordinating appointments. The purpose of this study was to audit the content of SMS exchanges between therapists and clients and to investigate the extent of inappropriate SMS use., Method: An audit of SMS messages sent and received from an outreach youth mental health service was conducted over a 7-month period., Results: The majority of SMS traffic sent to and received from clients was micro-coordinating face-to-face-meetings (76% and 61%, respectively), reflecting a practical real-time use of SMS. Only a small proportion of the client use of SMS was classified as inappropriate (2%)., Conclusions: The results demonstrate that mobile phones and SMS can be used as a safe, practical way of maintaining contact and coordinating meetings within a youth outreach service., (Crown Copyright © 2011. Abstract

Background: We have previously demonstrated a laboratory model for expanding autologous mononuclear cells into populations of effector killer cells. The goal of the current experiments was to develop a good manufacturing practice (GMP) method for expanding clinical-grade activated effector cells that mediate tumor cell killing through various mechanisms that could be infused into patients following high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplant., Methods: Mobilized mononuclear cells (MNC) from myeloma patients were placed in culture with serum-free AIM V media, interleukin-2 (1000 IU/mL) and OKT-3 (500 ng/mL) at 37 degrees C and 5% CO2. After 7 days of expansion, the cells were analyzed for cell concentration, viability, phenotype and cytotoxicity directed against human myeloma cell lines. Expansion was compared using culture bags and flasks. Cryopreserved expanded cells were also analyzed., Results: This clinical model of ex vivo expansion yielded polyclonal populations of cytotoxic lymphocytes, including CD3+ CD4+ T cells, CD3+ CD8+ T cells, CD8+ CD56+ T cells and CD56+ natural killer cells. Compared with flasks, culture bags provided a 2-3-fold effector cell expansion with minimal risk of contamination. The optimal cell concentration at the time of expansion was 2.5-3.5 x 10(6) peripheral blood MNC/mL. Viability and cytotoxicity were maintained if the expanded cells were cryopreserved and then thawed for use., Discussion: The results demonstrate a reproducible and reliable GMP procedure that is currently being employed in a clinical trial. These expanded cells, and their various pathways of tumor cell killing, may circumvent tumor escape mechanisms and improve outcomes.

Abstract

Background: PBMC can be expanded ex vivo into aggressive cytotoxic effector cells (CEC) comprising T, NK and NKT cells. We identified the phenotype, cytotoxicity and mechanisms of killing of these CEC., Methods: CY- and G-CSF-mobilized PBMC from myeloma patients were placed in Aim-V serum-free medium, IL-2 (50 IU/mL) and OKT-3 (50 ng/mL). Cytotoxicity was evaluated by selectively blocking the TCR, MHC class I or NKG2D receptor., Results: The CEC expanded three-fold by day 7 and aggressively lysed myeloma cells (41.9%) compared with day 0 (4%; P=0.012). CD8+ CD56+ NKT cells performed the majority of lysis. The CD8+ cells greatly increased NKG2D expression during culture (P=0.005). Cytotoxicity correlated with target NKG2D ligand expression (P=0.0002). Blocking the TCR or MHC class I did not affect cytotoxicity (P>0.22). CD8+ cell-mediated lysis dropped 48% when the NKG2D receptor was blocked. Day 7 CEC aggressively lysed myeloma cells in an MHC- and non-MHC-restricted fashion, through the NKG2D receptor., Discussion: Because MHC expression is often down-regulated on tumor cells and the NKG2D ligands are generally specific to malignant cells, the adoptive transfer of CEC that kill through different pathways may circumvent tumor-resistant mechanisms and improve outcomes.

Abstract

During the past decade there has been increasing breastfeeding support within the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. For this study, it was hypothesized that employees at WIC would initiate and continue to breastfeed significantly longer than the National averages. Female employees, mostly paraprofessionals, from six Los Angeles County WIC agencies participated in the study to determine breastfeeding rates and predictors of breastfeeding success. As expected, 99% of WIC employees initiated breastfeeding and 68.6% continued to breastfeed to one year, significantly exceeding National averages. Four variables accounted for 30% of the variance in duration of breastfeeding: intent to exclusively breastfeed, delayed introduction of infant formula, attendance at breastfeeding support groups and availability of work-site breastpumps. Given that nearly 70% of the study participants reached the American Academy of Pediatrics goal of breastfeeding to 12 months or more, it is clear that full-time employment and breastfeeding can be compatible given appropriate work-site support.
