Background: Although Bangladesh has gained rapid improvement in births at health facilities, yet far behind to achieve the SDG target. Assessing the contribution of factors in increased use of delivery at facilities are important to demonstrate. Objective: To explore the determinants and their contribution in explaining increased use of facility child births in Bangladesh. Participants: Reproductive-aged women (15–49 years) of Bangladesh. Methods and materials: We used the latest five rounds (2004, 2007, 2011, 2014, 2017–2018) of Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys (BDHSs). The regression based classical decomposition approach has been used to explore the determinants and their contribution in explaining the increased use of facility child birth. Results: A sample of 26,686 reproductive-aged women were included in the analysis, 32.90% (8780) from the urban and 67.10% (17,906) from the rural area. We observed a 2.4-fold increase in delivery at facilities from 2004 to 2017–2018, in rural areas it is more than three times higher than the urban areas. The change in mean delivery at facilities is about 1.8 whereas, the predicted change is 1.4. In our full sample model antenatal care visits contribute the largest predicted change of 22.3%, wealth and education contributes 17.3% and 15.3% respectively. For the rural area health indicator (prenatal doctor visit) is the largest drivers contributing 42.7% of the predicted change, hereafter education, demography and wealth. However, in urban area education and health contributed equally 32.0% of the change followed by demography (26.3%) and wealth (9.7%). Demographic variables (maternal BMI, birth order, age at marriage) contributing more than two-thirds (41.2%) of the predicted change in the model without the health variables. All models showed more than 60.0% predictive power. Conclusion: Health sector interventions should focus both coverage and quality of maternal health care services to sustain steady improvements in child birth facilities.

For its beneficial effects on health, Garcinia lanceifolia Roxb. Has long been used as a vegetable and in juice. In this study, as part of the process of finding and developing new drugs, we examine the cytotoxic and other pharmacological characteristics of isolated molecules. Various chromatographic methods were used to isolate the bioactive compounds identified by spectroscopic techniques. The brine shrimp lethality test was used to evaluate the cytotoxic properties of G. lanceifolia. In addition, the compounds' ADME screening, in-silico cell-line toxicity prediction, and molecular docking investigations were also looked into. The chemicals identified were 3-methoxyxanthen-9-one, Furo [3, 2-g] chromen-7-one, and 7-hydroxy-2-chromenone after a thorough spectrum analysis. According to an in-silico cell-line toxicity investigation, chemicals 1, 2, and 3 are likely to be active against different cancer cell lines. After a docking analysis against the cancer target protein epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), compound 1 (3-methoxyxanthen-9-one) showed a significant interaction with the active site of EGFR, with crucial amino acid residues including LEU694, ALA719, THR766, LEU820, and LEU831. The current study provided evidence that compound 1 (3-methoxyxanthen-9-one) may be a potent inhibitor against the cancer target protein EGFR, and this study will also be beneficial for the process of developing anticancer drugs.

It is crucial to explore knowledge, attitudes and perceptions (KAP) about rabies among the people in the community, the personnel dealing with animal bite management and suspected rabies patients, including humans and animals, to facilitate intervention in improving rabies elimination strategies. In 2016, we conducted an interactive face-to-face survey in three different districts of Bangladesh to understand the extent of KAP towards rabies in the community peoples (CPs), human healthcare professionals (HCPs) and veterinary practitioners (VPs). A set of prescribed questions was employed to measure what proportion of each group possessed sufficient knowledge, positive attitudes and adequate perceptions about rabies. A total of 1133 CPs, 211 HCPs and 168 VPs were interviewed by using a standard questionnaire comprising both closed and open-ended questions. Of the CPs, 49% identified the disease correctly (i.e. rabies is caused by an animal bite or a scratch). Only 29% of the CPs were aware that a wound should be washed immediately with soap and water after an animal bite or a scratch. However, only 49% of the CPs, 65% of the HCPs and 60% of the VPs felt that it is important to consult a physician and receive post-exposure vaccine as the first line of treatment following an animal exposure. Among the HCPs, 23% of the respondents did not possess sufficient knowledge about animal bites as categorised by the World Health Organization (WHO), and 12% of the respondents did not possess the knowledge on how to manage an animal bite properly. Out of 52% of the VPs who previously treated suspected rabid animals, only 29% had a history of taking rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Lack of formal education and rural subsistence were found to largely contribute to poor rabies KAP level among the CPs (P ≤ 0.01). There has been a high demand for proper training to be provided to HCPs and VPs for the effective management of an animal bite incidence in human and animals, respectively. Multi-sectoral collaboration through integrated One Health initiatives including community education, awareness programmes, facilitation of rabies PEP, and dog vaccination as well as its population control are critical in the way forward to control rabies in Bangladesh.

Sunlight intensity and UV radiation may affect free-range hens' use of the outside range, particularly when sunlight is intense with a high UV index. However, it is uncertain what aspect of sunlight (brightness or UV) may be most aversive to hens to discourage them from leaving standard indoor lighting conditions to venture outdoors. A controlled indoor-based choice study was conducted to determine whether hens showed preferences for different light wavelengths and intensities that may affect outdoor range usage. Cage-reared ISA Brown laying hens (n = 84) at 44 wk of age in 3 groups (28 hens/group) were tested for preferences of indoor standard light emitting diode (LED) white light (control) vs. one of three different treatment lights: 1) visible spectrum plus infrared wavelengths (VIS); 2) visible spectrum plus UVA wavelengths (UVA); and (iii) visible spectrum plus UVA and UVB wavelengths (UVA/B) presented successively at low, medium, or high levels of intensity. Hens within each group were individually tested for 2 h in an apparatus with 2 compartments (control vs. treatment) connected by a tunnel on both sides. Videos of hens' time spent in each compartment and behaviors were decoded and analyzed using GLMM. Hens spent more time under the low intensity of the UVA/B light treatment (62%), the low intensity of VIS light (61%), medium intensities of both UVA/B light (60%), and UVA light (59%), and the high intensity of the VIS light (58%) when compared with control light (all P ≤ 0.05). Identification of risk factors is crucial to find ways to reduce rabies deaths. We investigated the hospital records of rabies deceased through contact tracing of the relatives of the victims using enhanced verbal autopsies (VA) to identify why the people had to die from rabies in recent years in Bangladesh. Patients whose deaths were confirmed by physicians based on the history of animal exposure and clinical signs were taken into account for VA. Socio-demographic profile of the deceased, animal exposure, nature of the wound, and history of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) data were obtained and analysed. The study found 256 cases in which the cause of death was attributed to rabies, most of the victims were male (71.88%), resided in the rural community (80.47%), dependent (49.22%), and children below the age of 15 years (47.27%). Dogs were the single most responsible (81.64%); however, cats (12.11%), jackals (3.91%) and mongoose (2.34%) were also found accountable for rabies incidence (P < 0.05). Significantly, limbs were the most common (67.97%) site of exposure, and the shortest incubation period was identified in the case of bites to head and face (P < 0.05). The majority (86.72%) of the deceased did not receive any PEP; whereas, 66.80% sought treatment from traditional healers. Among the deceased (13.28%, n = 34) who had received PEP, only 8.82% of them completed the full course of the vaccination regimen (P < 0.01); however, none of them had history of taking rabies immunoglobulin (RIG). The study recommends extensive public health awareness programs in the rural community and establishing methods to improve healthcare-seeking behaviours, including receiving PEP instead of visiting traditional healers. Moreover, the availability and accessibility of PEP in the government hospital facilities are desirable, and laboratory-based surveillance with compatible rapid data reporting may be incorporated in the existing policy.

Objectives: Dengue emerged as a significant health threat in endemic regions in recent years. However, inconsistent diagnostic accuracy in sequential dengue infections necessitate improved testing methods to ensure effective management of dengue cases. Here, we evaluated a portable, rapid, and sensitive molecular assay—reverse transcriptase recombinase polymerase amplification assay (RT-RAA)—utilizing a mobile suitcase laboratory to detect infections in suspected dengue cases in Bangladesh. Methods: A total of 364 suspected patients with dengue were enrolled in the study. Dengue cases were confirmed by a positive result from any of the four tests: non-structural protein 1 (NS1) rapid diagnostic test (RDT), immunoglobulin (Ig) M RDT, quantitative reverse transcriptive-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and RT-RAA assay. IgG RDT was performed to differentiate between primary and secondary dengue infections. Results: Of 364 suspected cases, 320 were confirmed dengue cases, with 55.94% classified as primary and 44.06% as secondary infections. Laboratory results showed comparable positivity rates between RT-RAA (78.8%) and NS1 RDT (77.1%) in primary dengue, followed by quantitative RT-PCR (57.5%) and IgM RDT (12.8%). RT-RAA demonstrated superior positivity rates in secondary dengue (76.6%), surpassing RT-PCR (60.3%), NS1 RDT (27%), and IgM RDT (24.8%). Combining RT-RAA with NS1 RDT detected infections in 89.95% primary and 81.56% secondary dengue. Conclusions: The findings suggest that complementing RT-RAA with NS1 RDT could significantly improve dengue detection rate, particularly, for secondary infections.

Summary: Background: Bangladesh is making progress toward achieving zero dog-mediated rabies deaths by 2030, a global goal set in 2015. Methods: Drawing from multiple datasets, including patient immunisation record books and mass dog vaccination (MDV) databases, we conducted a comprehensive analysis between 2011 and 2023 to understand the effectiveness of rabies control programmes and predict human rabies cases in Bangladesh by 2030 using time-series forecasting models. We also compared rabies virus sequences from GenBank in Bangladesh and other South Asian countries. Findings: The estimated dog population in Bangladesh was determined to be 1,668,140, with an average dog population density of 12.83 dogs/km2 (95% CI 11.14–14.53) and a human-to-dog ratio of 86.70 (95% CI 76.60–96.80). The MDV campaign has led to the vaccination of an average of 21,295 dogs (95% CI 18,654–23,935) per district annually out of an estimated 26,065 dogs (95% CI 22,898–29,230). A declining trend in predicted and observed human rabies cases has been identified, suggesting that Bangladesh is poised to make substantial progress towards achieving the ‘Zero by 30’ goal, provided the current trajectory continues. The phylogenetic analysis shows that rabies viruses in Bangladesh belong to the Arctic-like-1 group, which differs from those in Bhutan despite sharing a common ancestor. Interpretation: Bangladesh's One Health approach demonstrated that an increase in MDV and anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) resulted in a decline in the relative risk of human rabies cases, indicating that eliminating dog-mediated human rabies could be achievable. The Sine-Gordon expansion (SGE) method is used to develop exact traveling wave solutions of a family of 3D fractional Wazwaz-Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (WBBM) equations. The governing equations are reduced to standard ordinary differential equations via companionable wave transformation. The order of the projected polynomial-type solution is figured out using the homogeneous stability approach based on the renowned Sine-Gordon equation. This solution's replacement corresponds to the earlier stage. A system of algebraic equations (SAE) is formed by comparing the coefficients of the powers of the projected solution. A robust coefficient scheme supplies the necessary relationships between parameters and coefficients to develop solutions. Some solutions are modeled for various parameter combinations. Several hyperbolic function solutions are created using the mentioned method. The MATLAB program displays the answers' graphical exemplifications in three-dimensional (3D) surface plots, contour plots, and 2D line plots. The resulting solutions to the equation, with the appropriate parameters, are used to depict the absolute wave configurations in all displays. Additionally, it can conclude that the discovered solutions and their physical characteristics could aid in understanding how shallow water waves propagate in nonlinear dynamics.

Bangladesh has been experiencing rapid urban expansion over the last few decades, contributing much to the region's land cover transition into the urban area. The study aims to employ geospatial modeling techniques to investigate land cover scenarios in the Pabna municipality of Bangladesh. Therefore, the research examined Cellular Automata Markov and Multi-Layer Perceptron Markov models to detect land cover for 2023 and 2028. The study selected the Multi-Layer Perceptron Markov as the best fit model over Cellular Automata Markov based on the highest kappa value. The result reveals that urban area has increased from 3.39 to 8.79 km2 over 1998–2018. Urban expansion and its surrounding area are primarily occurring towards the northeast directions. However, the extent of urban build-up land will grow from 3.39 km2 in 1998 to 11.01 km2 in 2023 and 12.44 km2 in 2028. Moreover, the future land cover map delineated that the urban growth will expand in the northeast part of the study area. The scenario shown in this paper would assist urban planners in quantifying the urban growth under different land cover features and thus preparing proper strategic measures.
