Ethylene was polymerized at 60 °C and 0.7 MPa using catalysts supporting Cp 2 ZrCl 2 on cation-exchanged montmorillonites as an activator. The supported catalysts consisting of Cp 2 ZrCl 2 and alkali metal ion-exchanged montmorillonites showed very low activity for ethylene polymerization. When Cp 2 ZrCl 2 supported on montmorillonites exchanged with H + , Mg 2+ , and Cu 2+ ions were used in the polymerization, polyethylene was obtained at high yields. The catalytic activity of Cp 2 ZrCl 2 supported on Mg 2+ -mont, 1.2 x 10 4 kg-PE.mol-Zr -1 .h, was determined from the polyethylene yield and the amount of Zr supported.
