Investigating the effect of presoaking, as one of the most important physical factors affecting the adsorption behavior of biochar, on the adsorption of heavy metals by modified or non-modified biochar and presoaking mechanism is still an open issue. In this study, the water presoaking effect on the kinetics of cadmium (Cd) adsorption by rice husk biochar (produced at 450 °C, B1, and at 600 °C, B2) and the rice husk biochar modified with magnesium chloride (B1 modified with MgCl 2 , MB1, and B2 modified with MgCl 2 , MB2) was investigated. Furthermore, the effect of pH (2, 5, and 6), temperature (15, 25, and 35 °C), and biochar particle size (100 and 500 µm) on the kinetics of Cd adsorption was also investigated. Results revealed that the content of Cd adsorbed by the presoaked biochar was significantly higher than that by the non-presoaked biochar. The highest Cd adsorption capacity of MB2 and MB1 was 98.4 and 97.6 mg g -1 , respectively, which was much better than that of B1 (7.6 mg g -1 ) and B2 (7.5 mg g -1 ). The modeling of kinetics results showed that in all cases pseudo-second-order model was well-fitted (R 2 >0.99) with Cd adsorption data. The results also indicated that the highest Cd adsorption values were observed at pH 6 in presoaked MB1 with size of 100 µm as well as at the temperature of 35 °C in presoaked MB2, indicating the optimum conditions for this process. The presoaking process was not affected by biochar size and pH, and the difference in adsorbed Cd content between presoaked biochars and non-presoaked ones was also similar. However, the temperature had a negative effect on presoaking. The presoaking process decreased micropores (<10 µm) in the biochars but had no effect on biochar hydrophobicity. N-rich biochars were obtained via pyrolysis treatment of chitosan (a low-cost biopolymer from natural biomasses) at mild conditions (in the 284 °C-540 °C range), thus offering an energy efficient and low carbon footprint synthesis. These low surface area N-doped biochars were morphologically and physicochemically characterized, and tested as hosting material in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Sulfur/biochars cathodes thus obtained showed good capacity retention and improved Coulombic efficiency compared to a standard N-rich high surface area carbon and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) reference substrates. In this study, chitosan and bio-based substances (BBS) obtained from composted biowaste were used as stabilizers for the synthesis of magnet-sensitive nanoparticles (NPs) via coprecipitation method. A pyrolysis treatment was carried out on both biopolymers at 550°C, and their consequent conversion into a carbon matrix was followed by means of different physicochemical characterization techniques (mainly FTIR spectroscopy and XRD), whereas magnetic properties were evaluated by magnetization curves. The prepared materials were tested in water remediation processes from arsenic (As) species (both inorganic and organic forms). These tests, explained by means of the most common adsorption models, evidenced that the best performances were reached by both materials obtained after pyrolysis treatments, pointing out the promising application of such magnet-sensitive materials as easy-recoverable tools for water purification treatments., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Peroxidase immobilization onto magnetic supports is considered an innovative strategy for the development of technologies that involves enzymes in wastewater treatment. In this work, magnetic biocatalysts were prepared by immobilization of soybean peroxidase (SBP) onto different silica-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. The obtained magnetic biocatalysts were tested for the degradation of malachite green (MG), a pollutant often found in industrial wastewaters and with significant drawbacks for the human and environmental health. A deep physicochemical characterization of the materials was performed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), High Resolution-Transmission Electron Microscope (HR-TEM) and magnetization measurements among others techniques. Results showed high immobilization yield of SBP onto nanomaterials with excellent properties for magnetic recoverability. A partial loss of activity with respect to free SBP was observed, compatible with the modification of the conformational structure of the enzyme after immobilization. The structural modification depended on the amount (and thickness) of silica present in the hybrid materials and the activity yield of 43% was obtained for the best biocatalyst. In order to confer adhesive properties to commercial polypropylene (PP) meshes, a surface plasma-induced deposition of poly-(acrylic acid) (PPAA) is performed. Once biomaterials were functionalized, different post-deposition treatments (i.e. water washing and/or thermal treatments) were investigated with the aim of monitoring the coating degradation (and therefore the loss of adhesion) after 3months of aging in both humid/oxidant (air) and inert (nitrogen) atmospheres. A wide physicochemical characterization was carried out in order to evaluate the functionalization effectiveness and the adhesive coating homogeneity by means of static water drop shape analysis and several spectroscopies (namely, FTIR, UV-Visible and X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy). The modification of the adhesion properties after post-deposition treatments as well as aging under different storage atmospheres were investigated by means of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) used in Force/Distance (F/D) mode. This technique confirms itself as a powerful tool for unveiling the surface adhesion capacity as well as the homogeneity of the functional coatings along the fibers. Results obtained evidenced that post-deposition treatments are mandatory in order to remove all oligomers produced during the plasma-treatment, whereas aging tests evidenced that these devices can be simply stored in presence of air for at least three months without a meaningful degradation of the original properties., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V.
