The CoCrMo alloy is a biomaterial that has been employed for the production of permanent orthopedic implants, however, the release of metallic ions from debris due to tribocorrosion is the main drawback for its extended application. In this paper, we propose the use of the ball burnishing process to improve the surface properties of the CoCrMo alloy. A 32 factorial design of experiments (DoE) was conducted to achieve a basic understanding of the relationship between the surface hardness, roughness and corrosion current (response variables) and the force and number of passes of the burnishing tool (input factors). Statistical analysis showed that force is the most significant factor for changing the surface properties. At the best experimental conditions, hardness was improved by 41.4%, the roughness was decreased by 72.7% and the corrosion rate was noticeably reduced by 92.4%. Microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that ball burnishing introduces changes in the microstructure, generating a surface layer with improved properties. It is concluded that the ball burnishing process is suitable for improving the surface properties of the CoCrMo alloy under an appropriate combination of experimental conditions.

Background: Melioidosis is endemic in Malaysia, the southwest of Thailand, and northern Australia. The incidence in Thailand is 4.4/1 000 000 inhabitants, where it causes 19% of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and 20% of bacteremic pneumonia, and the mortality is 50%. Sporadic cases have been described in Central and South America. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical and epidemiological features and ecological characteristics of melioidosis in Antioquia, Colombia. Methods: This is a case series description. Results: Seven cases were identified. Burkholderia pseudomallei was isolated from peripheral blood, pleural fluid, and urine and was identified by the automated system VITEK 2 (bioMérieux) and API 20NE biochemical kit. Five of the cases had a bacteremic form with shock and pulmonary compromise and two of these patients died. The non-bacteremic melioidosis cases had genitourinary, abdominal, and osteoarticular compromise. All patients had comorbidities and lived in rural hot and humid areas in the west central region of Colombia (Antioquia). Diabetes mellitus, renal insufficiency, and other chronic diseases are important risk factors for the development of severe forms. Conclusions: The cases presented here are similar to those occurring in endemic areas regarding comorbidity, risk factors, clinical presentation, and environmental conditions. It is necessary to establish whether melioidosis is an endemic and under-diagnosed disease or an emerging disease in Colombia.

Microplastics are contaminants of emerging concern, not least due to their global presence in marine surface waters. Unsurprisingly, microplastics have been reported in salts harvested from numerous locations. We extracted microplastics from 13 European sea salts through 30% H2O2 digestion and filtration over 5-µm filters. Filters were visually inspected at magnifications to x100. A subsample of potential microplastics was subjected to Raman spectroscopy. Particle mass was estimated, and human dose exposure calculated. After blank corrections, median concentrations were 466 ± 152 microplastics kg-1 ranging from 74 to 1155 items kg-1. Bid is the only known Bcl-2 family member that can function as an agonist of proapoptotic Bcl-2-related proteins such as Bax and Bak. Expression of the proapoptotic Bcl-2 family protein Bid was assessed by immunoblotting and immunohistochemical methods in normal murine and human tissues, and in several types of human cancers and tumor cell lines. Bid expression in normal tissues varied widely, with prominent Bid immunostaining occurring in several types of short-lived cells (e.g., germinal center B cells, peripheral blood granulocytes, differentiated keratinocytes) and in apoptosissensitive cells (e.g., adult neurons). Analysis of Bid expression by immunostaining of 100 colon, 95 ovarian, and 254 prostate cancers, as well as 59 brain tumors and 50 lymphomas, revealed evidence of altered Bid regulation in sometypes of cancers. Correlations with clinical outcome data revealed association of higher levels of Bid with longer recurrence-free survival in men with locally advanced (T3 stage) prostate cancer (P=0.04). The phytochemical investigation of extracts from Dalea nana roots and aerial parts led to the isolation of thirteen phenolic compounds. Three previously undescribed isoflavans, named verdeans A-C (1, 3, and 7), were characterized. Two additional isoflavans (2 and 5) were previously undescribed enantiomers of known compounds. A previously undescribed isoflavone (verdean D, 10) was found, and the known specialized metabolites, isoflavans 4, 6, 8, and 9, isoflavone 11, flavone 12, and a 2-arylbenzofuran 13, were also isolated. All but one (7) of the isoflavans were prenylated. The structures of the previously undescribed compounds were deduced by NMR spectroscopy, supported by HRESI mass spectrometry. The absolute configurations of 1-3, 5, and 7-9 were determined by ECD. Compounds 1, 3, 4, 6, and 8 exhibited in vitro antimicrobial activities, causing complete growth inhibition (MIC) at concentrations between 6.7 and 37.0 μM against Cryptococcus neoformans and between 8.9 and 25.0 μM against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Objectives: In terms of vaccination, people trust healthcare professionals (HCPs) more than any other source of information. They are the cornerstone of vaccination as they can move undecided populations not only towards vaccination but also towards non-vaccination. The aim of this systematic review was to explore the knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and barriers associated with own vaccination and patient recommendation in HCPs., Study Design: This study incorporated a systematic review., Methods: A systematic review of studies published from January 1, 2000, to June 1, 2020, was conducted by searching PubMed and EMBASE electronic databases. Qualitative studies reporting outcomes related to knowledge, attitudes, or barriers related to vaccination/recommendation by healthcare personnel were included. The guidelines in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses were followed., Results: From a total of 2916 studies identified, 36 articles met the inclusion criteria. Some of the factors cited by the HCP that may contribute to vaccine hesitancy were (a) concerns regarding safety or efficacy of vaccines (23 articles); (b) time constraints (21 articles); (c) lack of knowledge about the vaccination/vaccine (19 articles); (d) costs (13 articles); (e) distrust of pharmaceutical industry (8 articles); and (f) considering oneself insusceptible (7 articles), stock shortage (7 articles), lack of personnel (5 articles), and feelings of unnecessary vaccination (5 articles)., Conclusions: Our review suggests that interventions to combat vaccine hesitancy should increase HCP education on vaccine efficacy and safety, as well as intervene on health system factors such as cost and time per visit. The World Health Organization has proposed that a search be made for alternatives to vaccines for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, with one such alternative being selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This study thus sought to assess: the impact of previous treatment with SSRI antidepressants on the severity of COVID-19 (risk of hospitalisation, admission to an intensive care unit [ICU], and mortality), its influence on susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 and progression to severe COVID-19. We conducted a population-based multiple case-control study in a region in the north-west of Spain. Data were sourced from electronic health records. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95%CIs were calculated using multilevel logistic regression. We collected data from a total of 86,602 subjects: 3060 cases PCR+, 26,757 non-hospitalised cases PCR+ and 56,785 controls (without PCR+). Citalopram displayed a statistically significant decrease in the risk of hospitalisation (aOR=0.70; 95% CI 0.49-0.99, p = 0.049) and progression to severe COVID-19 (aOR=0.64; 95% CI 0.43-0.96, p = 0.032). Paroxetine was associated with a statistically significant decrease in risk of mortality (aOR=0.34; 95% CI 0.12 - 0.94, p = 0.039). No class effect was observed for SSRIs overall, nor was any other effect found for the remaining SSRIs. Background & Aims: Malnutrition is one of the most prevalent problems among oncological patients. It reduces the response to treatments and negatively impacts survival. In 2019, a consensus criteria for diagnosing malnutrition (GLIM criteria) were proposed by most scientific nutrition societies. The objective of our work is 1) to assess the diagnostic capacity of the GLIM criteria in ambulatory patients with cancer and 2) to compare the GLIM with the ESPEN criteria to evaluate the contributions of these new criteria with respect to the existing ones., Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, and single-center study carried out at the Medical Oncology Department in the Lozano Blesa Clinical Hospital in Zaragoza (Spain). One hundred and sixty-five outpatients with tumors in the upper gastrointestinal tract, head and neck, and colorectal locations were recruited. All of them received the MST, MUST, and Nutriscore screening tools along with the ESPEN and GLIM diagnostic criteria., Results: The prevalence of malnutrition was 46.7% according to the GLIM criteria and 21.2% using the ESPEN tool. Patients diagnosed by GLIM had a higher body mass index (BMI, 24.3 kg/m 2 ) and muscle mass (MM, 16.1 kg/m 2 ) than those diagnosed by ESPEN (21.2 kg/m 2 and 14.3 kg/m 2 respectively, both p = 0.001). The MST, MUST, and Nutriscore tools had a higher degree of concordance with GLIM compared to ESPEN (MST 0.53 vs 0.26; MUST 0.36 vs 0.66; Nutriscore 0.28 vs 0.54)., Conclusions: The found prevalence of malnutrition in cancer patients is higher using the GLIM instead of ESPEN criteria. This disparity can be explained at least in part by the difficulty of the ESPEN criteria for malnutrition to diagnose patients with high baseline BMI or MM. Introduction: AIM2 inflammasome activation leads to the release of IL-β, which plays an important role in rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis. In this work, we evaluated AIM2 expression and activity in RA patients and healthy controls., Methods: AIM2 and RANKL expression were evaluated by flow cytometry. Inflammasome activity was determined in monocyte cultures stimulated with synthetic DNA by measuring IL-1β levels in supernatants using an ELISA assay. The caspase-1 expression in monocytes was measured by western blot, the POP3 expression was analysed by qPCR, and serum levels of IFN-γ were evaluated using ELISA assay., Results: We observed a diminution of CD14+AIM2+ cells in RA patients, associated with disease activity and evolution. Likewise, the levels of IL-1β were increased in monocyte cultures un-stimulated and stimulated with LPS from RA patients with DAS28 ≥ 4. The Caspase-1 activity and RANKL + monocytes in RA patients were slightly increased. Finally, augmented POP3 expression and diminished IFN-γ serum levels were detected in RA patients., Conclusion: Our results showed that the monocytes from RA patients were prone to release IL-1β in the absence of the AIM2 inflammasome signal. Background: Using a pooled case-control study design, including only never-smokers, we have assessed the association of residential radon exposure with the subsequent occurrence of lung cancer. We also investigated whether residential radon poses a different risk specifically for adenocarcinoma., Methods: We pooled individual data from different case-control studies conducted in recent years in Northwestern Spain which investigated residential radon and lung cancer. All participants were never-smokers. Cases had a confirmed biopsy of primary lung cancer. Hospital controls were selected at pre-surgery units, presenting for non-complex surgical procedures. They were interviewed using a standardized instrument. Residential radon was measured using alpha track detectors at the Galician Radon Laboratory at the University of Santiago de Compostela., Results: A total of 1415 individuals, 523 cases and 892 controls were included. We observed an odds ratio of 1.73 (95%CI: 1.27-2.35) for individuals exposed to ≥ 200 Bq/m 3 compared with those exposed to ≤100 Bq/m 3 . Lung cancer risk for adenocarcinoma was 1.52 (95%CI: 1.14-2.02) using the same categories for radon exposure., Conclusions: Residential radon is a clear risk factor for lung cancer in never-smokers. Marginal zone B-cell lymphomas of the female genital tract are rare, and few cases exist of marginal zone B-cell lymphomas of the uterus, cervix, and fallopian tubes. Synovial joints are among the most important structures that give us complex motor abilities as humans. Degenerative joint diseases, such as arthritis, cause loss of normal joint functioning and affect over 40 million people in the USA and approximately 350 million people worldwide. Therapies based on regenerative medicine hold the promise of effectively repairing or replacing damaged joints permanently. Here, for the first time, we introduce a model for synovial joint regeneration utilizing the chick embryo. In this model, a block of tissue that contains the prospective elbow is excised, leaving a window with strips of anterior and posterior tissue intact (window excision, WE). In contrast, we also slice out the same area containing the elbow and the distal piece of the limb is pinned back onto the stump (slice excision, SE). Interestingly, when the elbow is removed via WE, regeneration of the joint takes place, whereas the elbow joint does not regenerate following SE. In order to investigate whether the regeneration response recapitulates the developmental program of forming joints, we used GDF-5 and Autotaxin (Atx) as joint tissue specific markers, and Sox-9 and Col-9 as cartilage markers for in situ hybridization on sections at different time points after WE and SE surgeries. Re-expression of GDF-5 and Atx is observed in the WE samples by 60h after surgery. In contrast, the majority of the samples that underwent SE surgery did not express GDF-5 and Atx. Also, in SE fusion of cartilage elements takes place and the joint interzone does not form. This is indicated by continuous Col-9 expression in SE limbs, whereas Col-9 is downregulated at the joint interzone in the regenerating WE samples. This order and pattern of gene expression observed in regenerates is similar to the development of a joint suggesting that regeneration recapitulates development at the molecular level. This model defines some of the conditions required for inducing joint regeneration in an otherwise nonregenerating environment. This study reports molecular markers potentially associated with resistance or sensitivity to the impact of copper in juvenile red abalone, Haliotis rufescens, in the north of Chile under experimental conditions. Genomic analysis was made applying subtractive hybridization libraries (SSH) to identify genes up-and down regulated during cooper exposure in abalone over periods of 12 and 168 h exposed to 2.5 and 10 μg/L of Cu(+2). Results obtained from the SSH library revealed 368 different sequences regulated by copper, that correspond to eight major physiological functions. The validation of these sequences obtained by SSH as well as their expression kinetics were made by PCR in real time on 14 potential genes regulated by metal stress. This study provides information for the characterization of potential genomic markers that may be used in future environmental monitoring and to investigate new mechanisms of stress to copper in this commercially important marine species., (Crown Copyright © 2011. A monolithic C18-bonded silica rod column (Merck Chromolith) was applied to the separation of mixtures of chlorophylls a and b and their derivatives originated by hydrolysis of the phytyl ester linkage (chlorophyllides), loss of the central Mg atom (pheophytins), or both processes (pheophorbides). Mobile phases containing two different ion-pair reagents, ammonium acetate and buffered pyridine, were tested. Both eluents achieved the resolution of the eight pigments in less than 5 min. The method based on the pyridine-containing mobile phase was applied to the separation of chlorophylls and their green coloured degradation products in senescing leaves of deciduous trees, green fruits and a marine microalga.

Most of the chlorophylls and their related compounds from nonesterified chlorophyllide to esterified pheophytin were separated by high- performance liquid chromatography using a wide pore, C(18) polyvinyl alcohol polymer column with an elution using a binary gradient starting from a buffered mobile phase. The high selectivity of this system enabled not only the separation of common chlorophyll species but also the resolution of structurally similar compounds such as mono- and divinyl chlorophyllide and pheophorbide species which usually coelute on monomeric bonded phases. The method is successfully applied to analyses of the pigments extracted from green and etiolated tissues of higher plants and photosynthetic bacterial cells.

Purified T cells from rhesus monkeys, like human T cells, do not show a significant mitogenic response to lectins or PMA, but when combined with PMA or accessory cells, PHA and Con A induce a vigorous mitogenic response. This response is strongly impaired in purified T cells from old rhesus monkeys compared to young T cells, from 56 to 72%, and parallels results obtained with T cell preparations containing accessory cells. Likewise, purified T cells do not respond to interleukin 2 (IL-2) or IL-4, but in the presence of PMA, a significant mitogenic response occurs in the young but not the old T cells. This response is augmented by accessory cells, but is still very deficient in the old T cells. These results show that the IL-2 independent activation of T cells triggered by IL-4, like the conventional IL-2 activation, is age impaired. The deficient response to IL-2 implies an age-related deficiency in IL-2 receptor as well in aged rhesus T cells, and may account for the less effective response of the old cells to calcium ionophore (+PMA) activation. The use of purified T cells in these studies obviate the influence of accessory cells, and thus simplify interpretation.
