Although many breast cancer survivors adjust to cancer treatment and survivorship, a sizable subgroup of women do not do so, resulting in psychological distress. Over time, this psychological distress can contribute to immune dysfunction and accompanying worsened physical symptoms as women navigate survivorship. Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser's work and mentorship has been integral to our understanding of breast cancer survivors' immune risks, and how behavioral factors may enhance these risks. As a postdoctoral fellow in the Stress and Health Lab, under Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser's mentorship, my research focused on understanding how distress is associated with immune functioning and physical health in breast cancer survivors. In this paper, we highlight Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser's influence on our careers as a strong female research and mentor, the work completed under her mentorship, and how the field of psychoneuroimmunology can continue to expand her research to better understand how distress in the cancer context confers long-term health risks.

Despite marriage's health benefits, all couples experience stress that can increase morbidity and mortality risks. Marital stress can alter endocrine, cardiovascular, and immune function—key pathways from troubled relationships to poor health. This review discusses how partners “get under each other's skin” to influence psychological, behavioral, and biological health. Then, I offer a comprehensive Dyadic Biobehavioral Stress Model to build on this foundational work and inspire transdisciplinary research integrating psychoneuroimmunological and relational lenses. This conceptual and empirically driven model provides promising new directions to investigate mechanisms linking individuals' relationships behaviors to their own and their partners' health, with particular emphasis on biological pathways. These mechanisms may impact each partner's physical health outcomes, such as disease development, illness severity, and accelerated biological aging. Risk and protective factors across developmental stages and diverse contexts are also discussed to help explain how, and under what conditions, partners influence each other's health. Research applying this model can push the boundaries of our current understanding on dyadic stress its far-reaching health effects on self-report and biological markers across the lifespan.

Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) provides chemical information from atomic and ionic plasma emissions generated by laser vaporization of a sample. At the ENEA research center, in collaboration with IPPLM, an equipment has been set up to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the chemical composition of impurities deposited on Plasma Facing Components (PFC). The strength of the LIBS, for its capability of light elements detection, is fully exploited to determine the deuterium content since this element can be considered as the best choice proxy for tritium; the latter being is of great importance in assessing safe conditions to assure the continuous operation in nuclear fusion tokamak.Here we present the results of the Double Pulse LIBS (DP-LIBS) probing of deuterated samples with the simultaneous optical detection by medium-resolution and high-resolution spectrometer. Deuterium emission at 656.1nm has been detected then the elemental composition has been quantified by applying the Calibration Free (CF) approach. The obtained results demonstrate that the DP-LIBS technique combined with CF analysis is suitable for the quantitative determination of tritium content inside the PFCs of next fusion devices like ITER.

Background & Aims: Overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) is a major complication of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement, given its high incidence and possibility of refractoriness to medical treatment. Nevertheless, the impact of post-TIPS OHE on mortality has not been investigated in a large population., Methods: We designed a multicenter, non-inferiority, observational study to evaluate the mortality rate at 30 months in patients with and without OHE after TIPS. We analyzed a database of 614 patients who underwent TIPS in three Italian centers and estimated the cumulative incidence of OHE and mortality with competitive risk analyses, setting the non-inferiority limit at 0.12., Results: During a median follow-up of 30 months (IQR 12-30), 293 patients developed at least one episode of OHE. Twenty-seven (9.2%) of them experienced recurrent/persistent OHE. Patients with OHE were older (64 [57-71] vs. 59 [50-67] years, p <0.001), had lower albumin (3.1 [2.8-3.5] vs. 3.25 [2.9-3.6] g/dl, p = 0.023), and had a higher prevalence of pre-TIPS OHE (15.4% vs. 9.0%, p = 0.023). Child-Pugh and MELD scores were similar. The 30-month difference in mortality between patients with and without post-TIPS OHE was 0.03 (95% CI -0.042 to 0.102). Multivariable analysis showed that age (subdistribution hazard ratio 1.04, 95% CI 1.02-1.05, p <0.001) and MELD score (subdistribution hazard ratio 1.09, 95% CI 1.05-1.13, p <0.001), but not post-TIPS OHE, were associated with a higher mortality rate. Similar results were obtained when patients undergoing TIPS for variceal re-bleeding prophylaxis (n = 356) or refractory ascites (n = 258) were analyzed separately. The proportion of patients with persistent OHE after TIPS was significantly higher in the group of patients who died. The robustness of these results was increased following propensity score matching., Conclusion: Episodic OHE after TIPS is not associated with mortality in patients undergoing TIPS, regardless of the indication., Impact and Implications: Overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) is a common complication in patients with advanced liver disease and it is particularly frequent following transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement. In patients with cirrhosis outside the setting of TIPS, the development of OHE negatively impacts survival, regardless of the severity of cirrhosis or the presence of acute-on-chronic liver failure. In this multicenter, non-inferiority, observational study we demonstrated that post-TIPS OHE does not increase the risk of mortality in patients undergoing TIPS, irrespective of the indication. This finding alleviates concerns regarding the weight of this complication after TIPS. Intensive research to improve patient selection and risk stratification remains crucial to enhance the quality of life of patients and caregivers and to avoid undermining the positive effects of TIPS on survival., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. Background: In patellofemoral replacement (PFR) coronal alignment is mostly influenced by local condylar anatomy. However, there is still a lack of consensus regarding references to follow intraoperatively for the optimal positioning of the trochlear component. The aim of this study was to assess whether aiming for the anatomical femoral axis on the coronal plane leads to improved clinical outcomes and whether coronal alignment correlates with clinical outcomes., Methods: Forty-two patients who underwent PFR were retrospectively evaluated at a minimum one-year follow-up using Kujala and Knee Society Score (KSS). Moreover, patients underwent an anteroposterior hip-to-knee X-ray to evaluate the coronal alignment of the trochlear component with respect to the femoral anatomic and mechanical axis. Prosthesis coronal alignment, Kujala, and KSS were assessed for possible correlation., Results: Mean follow-up time: 29.1 months. Mean KSS for pain: 90 (±8.9), for function: 93.7 (±15.9); mean Kujala: 89.2 (±13.6). Mean prosthesis coronal alignment was 3.3 ± 2.3° in valgus with respect to the femoral anatomic axis and 7.4 ± 2.6° in valgus with respect to the femoral mechanical axis. No correlations were found between coronal alignment and KSS or Kujala scores., Conclusions: Results from the current study showed that PF replacement with a third-generation implant led to good-to-excellent outcomes.
