Concurrent genital-anal human papillomavirus (HPV) infections may impose an increased anal cancer risk in women with HPV-related genital lesions. High viral load may facilitate genital-anal HPV concurrence. Genital and anal HPV is reduced by a bivalent HPV16/18 vaccine, yet the effect on concurrent genital-anal HPV remains unclear.This study analyzed viral load in concurrent genital-anal HPV infections, relative to genital-only and anal-only HPV infections and the impact of vaccination in young women. We included 1074 women, who provided both genital and anal swabs. HPV detection and genotyping was performed using the SPF10-DEIA-LiPA25. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a predominant role in groundwater arsenic (As) mobility. However, the temporal-spatial variations in DOM fluorescent characteristics and their effects on As mobility induced by groundwater irrigation remain unclear. To address these issues, groundwater from multilevel and irrigation wells in Zones I and II (with low- and high-As groundwater irrigation, respectively) from the Hetao Basin, China, were monitored in both non-irrigation (NIG) and irrigation (IG) seasons. Upon irrigation, the irrigation return increased the relative abundance of protein- and humic-like DOM in shallow groundwater from Zone I with Ca-type groundwater and Zone II with Na-type groundwater irrigation, respectively. The introduced dissolved oxygen by irrigation return decreased As concentrations by 22 % and 6 % on average in shallow groundwater from Zones I and II, respectively. However, the pumping-induced lateral recharge of lower- and higher-As groundwater led to an average 17 % decrease and 38 % increase in As concentrations in deeper groundwater from the two zones, respectively. The increased degradation of protein-like DOM may also contribute to the elevated As concentrations in deep groundwater from Zone II. Background: Ventriculostomy, one of the most common neurosurgical procedures, involves inserting a draining catheter into the brain's ventricular system to alleviate excessive cerebrospinal fluid accumulation. Traditionally, this procedure has relied on freehand techniques guided by anatomical landmarks, which have shown a high rate of misplacement. Recent advancements in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have opened up new possibilities in the field. This comprehensive review aims to analyze the existing literature, examine the diverse applications of VR and AR in ventriculostomy procedures, address their limitations, and propose potential future directions., Methods: A systematic search was conducted in Web of Science and PubMed databases to identify studies employing VR and AR technologies in ventriculostomy procedures. Review papers, non-English records, studies unrelated to VR/AR technologies in ventriculostomy, and supplementary documents were excluded. In total 29 papers were included in the review., Results: The development of various VR and AR systems aimed at enhancing the ventriculostomy procedure are categorized according to the Data, Visualization and View taxonomy. The study investigates the data utilized by these systems, the visualizations employed, and the virtual or augmented environments created. Furthermore, the surgical scenarios and applications of each method, as well as the validation and evaluation metrics used, are discussed., Discussion: The review delves into the fundamental challenges encountered in the implementation of VR and AR systems in ventriculostomy. Objective: To assess transcranial sonography (TCS) as stand-alone tool and in combination with microelectrode recordings (MER) as a method for the postoperative localization of deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes in the subthalamic nucleus (STN)., Methods: Individual dorsal and ventral boundaries of STN (n = 12) were determined on intraoperative MER. Postoperatively, a standardized TCS protocol was applied to measure medio-lateral, anterior-posterior and rostro-caudal electrode position using visualized reference structures (midline, substantia nigra). TCS and combined TCS-MER data were validated using fusion-imaging and clinical outcome data., Results: Test-retest reliability of standard TCS measures of electrode position was excellent. Computed tomography and TCS measures of distance between distal electrode contact and midline agreed well (Pearson correlation; r = 0.86; p < 0.001). Comparing our "gold standard" of rostro-caudal electrode localization relative to STN boundaries, i.e. combining MRI-based stereotaxy and MER data, with the combination of TCS and MER data, the measures differed by 0.32 ± 0.87 (range, -1.35 to 1.25) mm. Quantitative characteristics and sizes of nanoparticles (NPs) in coal fly ash (CFA) produced in coal-fired power plants as a function of coal type and plant design will help reveal the NP emission likelihood and their environmental implications. However, little is known about how combustion conditions and types of coal regulate the NP abundance in CFAs. In this study, based on single particle (SP)-ICP-MS technology, particle number concentrations (PNCs) and sizes of Fe- and Ti-containing NPs in CFAs were determined for samples collected from power plants of different designs and burning different types of coal. The PNCs of Fe- and Ti-containing NPs in all CFAs measured were in the range of 1.3 × 10 7 - 3.4 × 10 8 and 6.8 × 10 6 - 2.2 × 10 8 particles/mg, with the average particle sizes of 111 nm and 87 nm, respectively. The highest Fe-NP PNCs likely relate to the highest contents of Fe and pyrite in the feed coal. In addition, high TOC in CFAs are associated with metal-containing NPs, resulting in elevated abundances of these NPs with relatively large sizes. Moreover, elevated PNCs of NPs were found in CFAs produced by coal-fired power plants burning low-rank coals and with small installed capacity (especially those under 100-MW units). Compared to cyclone filters, ESPs and FFs with higher removal efficiency typically retain more Fe-/Ti- containing NPs with smaller sizes. Based on a structural equation (SE) model, raw coal properties (coal rank and Fe/Ti content), boiler types, and efficiency of particulate emission control devices likely indirectly affect PNCs of Fe- and Ti-containing NPs by influencing TOC contents and their corresponding metal concentrations of CFAs. Nostalgia, a sentimental longing for the past, confers an array of psychological, emotional, and social benefits. This review article discusses emerging evidence that exemplify how nostalgia also contributes to better physical health. Nostalgia's capacity for health promotion is highlighted in relation to five key areas: (a) nurturing positive health attitudes, (b) increasing physical activity, (c) improving dietary choices, (d) reducing health risk behavior, and (e) attenuating physical pain. These recent developments demonstrate that nostalgia serves as a resource to enhance multiple dimensions of physical well-being. The negative impacts of industrial farming on honey bee health have been widely recognized regarding pesticide use and natural foraging habitat loss. An assessment of suitability of urban farms regarding honey bee health is necessary for sustainable development of agriculture and apiculture in urban settings. Urban farms that adopt organic farming practices with restrictions on synthetic pesticide use and conservation of natural habitat can potentially create an environment to mitigate these environmental stressors on honey bees. In this experiment, bee-collected pollen was taken from honey bee colonies that were located on five organically managed urban farms located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to evaluate pesticide exposure and forage use. We also explored the influence of hive equipment on honey bee health in a high desert climate. We found that honey bees on organic urban farms were not stressed by pesticides with limited pesticide types detected (2 out of 187), low residue levels (< 20 µg/kg) and low toxicity (either no, or low toxicity with LD 50 at 1,450,300 µg/kg). Honey bees had access to diverse forage resources based on pollen barcoding data. When comparing hive equipment between 10-frame, 8-frame Langstroth and top bar hives, it was determined that 8-frame hives could significantly enhance honey bee health including colony survival and weight growth, comb construction and brood production. Competitive adsorption of arsenate (AsO 4 3- ) and phosphate (PO 4 3- ) on α-FeOOH, LaOOH, and nano-TiO 2 was studied using batch adsorption experiments and in-situ flow cell ATR-FTIR coupled with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) for the first time. With a higher temporal resolution, our results found a highly dynamic adsorption sequence for AsO 4 3- and PO 4 3- . When AsO 4 3- and PO 4 3- were simultaneously exposed to the adsorbents at the same concentrations, AsO 4 3- was preferentially adsorbed by α-FeOOH and TiO 2 , but PO 4 3- adsorption was dominant on LaOOH. The results implied that the PO 4 3- adsorbed on LaOOH had to be remobilized to allow for AsO 4 3- adsorption, but that PO 4 3- adsorption on α-FeOOH and TiO 2 was hindered by faster AsO 4 3- adsorption. Crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) analysis revealed that AsO 4 3- complexes bonded more strongly on α-FeOOH and TiO 2 , whereas PO 4 3- complexes were more stable on LaOOH. Different adsorption sequences and the stability of the complexes were attributed to the diverse geometric configurations of AsO 4 3- and PO 4 3- on metal oxides surfaces with specific bonding chemistry. The presence of Ca 2+ did not affect AsO 4 3- and PO 4 3- adsorption sequence on α-FeOOH or LaOOH, but it reversed the adsorption sequence on TiO 2 due to the formation of ternary surface complexes on TiO 2 surfaces., (Copyright © 2021. The assessment of potential trace metal(loid) contamination in tailing dumps and soils was characterized in the Chadak mining area (Uzbekistan). Concentrations of trace elements (V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, Pb) were determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis and compared with background and intervention values (IV). The concentrations of As, Zn, Sb, and Pb were higher in the abandoned than in the active tailing dump, ranging from 42-1689mg/kg for As, 73-332mg/kg for Zn, 14-1507mg/kg for Sb, and 27-386mg/kg for Pb. Selective extractions were applied in order to assess the mobility and availability of trace metal(loid)s in samples. Oxyanion-forming elements such as As and Sb were immobilized by Fe oxides, although to some extent also extractable with acetic acid and soluble-in-water forms were detected, indicating potential bioavailability that can impose a potential toxicity risk for the environment. Selective extractions data also showed that Zn and Pb were relatively immobile, although in higher contamination sites significant amounts of these elements were also extractable with acetic acid. In tailing materials Zn and Pb mobility were negatively correlated by the cation-exchange capacity (CEC) and clay content, indicating the importance of these factors in the reduction of the potential toxicity for these elements. Total concentration of As, Sb, and Pb were also negatively correlated with soil pH, indicating that the oxidation process of sulphide tailings and thus the generation of acidic conditions may lead to release of contaminants over time. However, due to the calcium carbonate content, the acid neutralization capacity of the tailings is not yet exhausted and contaminant concentrations in soil-pore water are still relatively low. The results of our investigation suggest that environmental risk associated with these wastes in semi-arid climate is therefore not a short-term problem but rather requires constant monitoring and additional ecotoxicological studies., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. The pivotal step in Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) therapy is the insertion of a membrane for support and barrier functions. Here, we studied the effect of the addition of silica nanoparticles (Si-NPs) in electrospun poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) membranes to improve the mechanical and osteoconductive properties of the membranes. To this end, Si-NPs were firstly synthesized and then suspended in PCL solutions containing a polar solvent (2,2,2-trifluroethanol) and water with the addition of an anionic surfactant. Nanocomposite membranes were fabricated from the solutions through an electrospinning technique. Morphology, structure and chemical composition, and tensile properties of the membranes were analyzed. Membrane stability was determined by visual examination of the membranes after immersion in phosphate buffered saline. The effect of the materials on osteoblastic differentiation was evaluated by in vitro culture of the membranes with MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells. The results indicated that Si-NPs were successfully incorporated in the interior of the PCL electrospun fibers during the electrospinning process. Tensile modulus was significantly increased for composition S50 and tensile strength significantly increased for compositions S25 and S50. Membranes containing Si-NPs have shown to be cytocompatible. The results obtained demonstrate that the Si-NPs were homogeneously incorporated in the electrospun fibers, resulting in an improvement of the tensile properties of the prepared materials., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Purpose: Neuronavigation based on preoperative imaging data is a ubiquitous tool for image guidance in neurosurgery. However, it is rendered unreliable when brain shift invalidates the patient-to-image registration. Many investigators have tried to explain, quantify, and compensate for this phenomenon to allow extended use of neuronavigation systems for the duration of surgery. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the work that has been done investigating brain shift., Methods: A review of the literature dealing with the explanation, quantification and compensation of brain shift is presented. The review is based on a systematic search using relevant keywords and phrases in PubMed. The review is organized based on a developed taxonomy that classifies brain shift as occurring due to physical, surgical or biological factors., Results: This paper gives an overview of the work investigating, quantifying, and compensating for brain shift in neuronavigation while describing the successes, setbacks, and additional needs in the field. An analysis of the literature demonstrates a high variability in the methods used to quantify brain shift as well as a wide range in the measured magnitude of the brain shift, depending on the specifics of the intervention. The analysis indicates the need for additional research to be done in quantifying independent effects of brain shift in order for some of the state of the art compensation methods to become useful., Conclusion: This review allows for a thorough understanding of the work investigating brain shift and introduces the needs for future avenues of investigation of the phenomenon., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. A surface complexation modeling approach was used to extend the knowledge about processes that affect the availability of dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) in the soil rhizosphere in presence of a strong sorbent, e.g., Fe plaques on rice roots. Published spectroscopic and molecular modeling information suggest for the organoarsenical agent to form bidentate-binuclear inner-sphere surface complexes with Fe hydroxides similar to the inorganic As oxyanions. However, since also the ubiquitous silicic acid oxyanion form the same bidentate binuclear surface complexes, our hypothesis was that it may have an effect on the adsorption of DMA by Fe hydroxides in soil. Our experimental batch equilibrium data show that DMA is strongly adsorbed in the acidic pH range, with a steep adsorption edge in the circumneutral pH region between the DMA acidity constant (pKa=6.3) and the point of zero charge value of the goethite adsorbent (pHpzc=8.6). A 1-pK CD-MUSIC surface complexation model was chosen to fit the experimental adsorption vs. pH data. The same was done for silicic acid batch equilibrium data with our goethite adsorbent. Both model parameters for individual DMA and silicic acid adsorption were then merged into one CD-MUSIC model to predict the binary DMA+Si adsorption behavior. Silicic acid (500 μM) was thus predicted by the model to strongly compete for DMA with up to 60% mobilization of the latter at a pH6. This model result could be verified subsequently by experimental batch equilibrium data with zero adjustable parameters. The thus quantified antagonistic relation between DMA and silicic acid is discussed as one of factors to explain the increase of the DMA proportion in rice grains as observed upon silica fertilization of rice fields., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. This study describes the impact of airborne pollution resulting from mining and smelting activities on the soils of the Almalyk mining and industrial area (NE Uzbekistan). Samples were collected along a transect downwind of the industrial area. Enriched contents of some metals were found in the upper soil layers near the metallurgical complex (Zn≤3010 mg kg(-1), Pb≤630 mg kg(-1), Cd≤30 mg kg(-1)) which suggests that these metals were derived from local stack emissions. The morphology and internal microstructure of metal-bearing spherical particles found in the heavy mineral fraction suggest that these particles were probably a result of inefficient flue gas cleaning technique of the smelter. The highest metal concentrations were found also in soil solutions and exchangeable solid fractions from the first three locations, and decreased with increasing distance from the pollution source along transect. Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations suggest that the mobile metal pool in the contaminated soil is mainly controlled by dissolution of metal carbonates formed as weathering product of the metalliferous particles. The health of the microbiological soil ecosystem was assessed by measurements of basal respiration, nematode abundance, biomass-related C and N content, and microbial metabolic quotient qCO2. Significant correlations were found between the dissolved metal content and the microbiological health parameters, a negative one for Cmic/Corg ratio, and a positive one for qCO2. A negative correlation was found between the amount of nematodes and the metal contents suggesting that the contaminated soil has significant impact on the functioning of the microbiological community. A better understanding of the spatial variations in the whole ecosystem functioning due to airborne impact could be very useful for establishing suitable land use and best management practices for the polluted areas., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. The Notch signaling pathway has pleiotropic functions during mammalian embryogenesis. It is required for the patterning and differentiation of the presomitic and somitic paraxial mesoderm and of the neural tube. We used DNA-chip expression profiling and 2D-gel electrophoresis combined with peptide mass fingerprinting to identify genes and proteins differentially regulated in E10.5 Dll1 (delta-like 1, Delta1) mutant embryos. The differential expression profiling approach identified 47 regulated transcripts and 40 differentially expressed proteins. The majority of these genes has until now not been associated with Notch signaling. Subsequent whole-mount in situ hybridization confirmed that a subset of the identified transcripts has restricted and distinct patterns of expression in E10.5 mouse embryos. For most genes these expression patterns were affected in the presomitic mesoderm, in differentiating somites of Dll1 mutant embryos and in the neural tube and cells differentiating from it. Similar effects were observed in embryos homozygous for the Headturner (Htu) and pudgy (pu) mutations, which are alleles of the Notch ligands Jag1 and Dll3. The regulated expression of a subset of the proteins was validated by immunoblots. Remarkably six of the proteins down-regulated in Dll1 mutant embryos are proteasome subunits. The large set of regulated genes identified in this differential expression profiling approach is an important resource for further functional studies.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s of the past century, industrial waste material highly enriched in various contaminants (heavy metals, PAHs) was dumped in the inner Mecklenburg Bay, western Baltic Sea. Large-scale shifts in the spatial distribution of heavy metals in surface sediments were mapped by geochemical monitoring in the mid-1980s and 12 years later in 1997. A further study in 2001 was designed to investigate the small-scale spatial distribution of contaminants inside, on top of, and around the historical dumping ground and to examine possible effects to benthic organisms (Arctica islandica, microbiological toxicity tests). The site is located within an area characterized by a discontinuous deposition of fine sediments, but net sedimentation rate of about 3mm/y led ultimately to a gradual coverage of the dumped material. During the first decades after the dumping, about half of the originally dumped material was already spread over the surrounding area as a result of sediment dynamics and re-suspension processes. Recent sediments of the historical dump site are still significantly enriched in heavy metals and PAHs. Microbiological toxicity test results were positive, though uptake of contaminants in mussels was found to deviate only slightly from that of a non-contaminated reference station due to a gradual dilution and decrease in bioavailability of the contaminants.
