Abstract: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is only suitable for early-stage adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). In this study, we observed the therapeutic efficacy of combined transplantation of neural precursor cells (NPCs) and olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) on late-stage X-linked ALD in nine children who were admitted in our hospital between June 2009 and January 2014. Related patient information included onset time 3 months to 1 year, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) score 11.02±0.90, and neurologic function score 2–3. All patients received combined transplantation of NPCs and OECs by injection around the lateral angle of the frontotemporal–occipital lesion under MRI guidance. It was found that the visual function, sleep, and communication obstacles were improved significantly without evidence of disease progression in six (66.7%) of the nine patients within 1 month after transplantation. In two of the six patients, the lesions became significantly smaller than before, although their MRI scores remained unchanged significantly. In addition, cell therapy did not induce any irreversible adverse event during the study period, indicating that combined transplantation of NPCs and OECs was safe and reliable, and could improve the clinical manifestations of ALD in children within a short time. Although this cell therapy was not able to halt the progression of the disease 1–3 months after transplantation, it could still be used as an early treatment and provide patients with more opportunities for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, which is the only effective long-term treatment for X-linked ALD at present. The preliminary results from this study suggest that a comprehensive prevention strategy of serial and combined transplantation may improve some functions for ALD patients in the short-term, however, long-term effects need further study. Abstract

Systemic inflammation is established as part of late-stage severe lung disease, but molecular, functional, and phenotypic changes in peripheral immune cells in early disease stages remain ill defined. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major respiratory disease characterized by small-airway inflammation, emphysema, and severe breathing difficulties. Using single-cell analyses we demonstrate that blood neutrophils are already increased in early-stage COPD, and changes in molecular and functional neutrophil states correlate with lung function decline. Assessing neutrophils and their bone marrow precursors in a murine cigarette smoke exposure model identified similar molecular changes in blood neutrophils and precursor populations that also occur in the blood and lung. Our study shows that systemic molecular alterations in neutrophils and their precursors are part of early-stage COPD, a finding to be further explored for potential therapeutic targets and biomarkers for early diagnosis and patient stratification.

5. DuCL: Dual-stage contrastive learning framework for Chinese semantic textual matching

Abstract

Chinese semantic textual matching is a fundamental yet challenging task in natural language processing (NLP). How to accurately capture the features in a single piece of text and the interactive features between pieces of text is the core problem of the task. Although pretrained language models (PLMs) and contrastive learning (CL) have been applied to address the problem to some extent, the existing works usually just utilize contrastive learning to finetune the PLMs on one single perspective, such as the sentence or pair level, which neglects to capture the semantic features from the other perspective, leading to inefficient learning and suboptimal performance. To tackle the problem, we propose a novel dual-stage contrastive learning framework (DuCL) for Chinese semantic textual matching. Specifically, DuCL consists of two stages sequentially, i.e., CL on the sentence level and CL on the pair level, each of which is responsible to finetune PLMs from the corresponding perspective. Besides, DuCL introduces a block-enhanced interaction module to integrate token-level and block-level interactive features to generate a semantic matching representation for two pieces of text. Extensive experimental results on two real-world public datasets demonstrate that our method can achieve better performance than the representative and state-of-the-art methods.

6. Spatio-temporal fusion and contrastive learning for urban flow prediction

Abstract

Urban flow prediction is critical for urban planning, management, and safety. However, owing to the inherent instability of urban flows, prediction accuracy requires the fusion of multi-view influencing factors. Current prediction methods are insensitive to periodic changes in urban flows, and rarely consider the implied spatial and temporal correlations between similar functional areas. Thus, we propose a method based on spatiotemporal fusion and contrastive learning. We construct an extraction module of spatial and temporal views based on contrastive learning in the spatial and temporal dimensions. With the temporal view extraction, we can obtain the distribution and change in the global urban flow periodicity. Using the spatial view extraction, we can obtain the implied flow variation relationship between similar regions. Therefore, our model can capture the high-level semantic features of urban flow changes from multiple views. We also design a multi-view fusion and prediction network to combine multi-view representations that impact urban flow. We experimentally evaluated our proposed approach using two real-world datasets and demonstrated state-of-the-art forecasting performance, as well as effectiveness in resource-limited environments.

Abstract

In the past two decades, membrane technology has attracted considerable interest as a viable and promising method for water purification. Emerging organic micropollutants (EOMPs) in wastewater have trace, persistent, highly variable quantities and types, develop hazardous intermediates and are diffusible. These primary issues affect EOMPs polluted wastewater on an industrial scale differently than in a lab, challenging membranes-based EOMP removal. Graphene oxide (GO) promises state-of-the-art membrane synthesis technologies and use in EOMPs removal systems due to its superior physicochemical, mechanical, and electrical qualities and high oxygen content. This critical review highlights the recent advancements in the synthesis of next-generation GO membranes with diverse membrane substrates such as ceramic, polyethersulfone (PES), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The EOMPs removal efficiencies of GO membranes in filtration, adsorption (incorporated with metal, nanomaterial in biodegradable polymer and biomimetic membranes), and degradation (in catalytic, photo-Fenton, photocatalytic and electrocatalytic membranes) and corresponding removal mechanisms of different EOMPs are also depicted. GO-assisted water treatment strategies were further assessed by various influencing factors, including applied water flow mode and membrane properties (e.g., permeability, hydrophily, mechanical stability, and fouling). GO additive membranes showed better permeability, hydrophilicity, high water flux, and fouling resistance than pristine membranes. Likewise, degradation combined with filtration is two times more effective than alone, while crossflow mode improves the photocatalytic degradation performance of the system. GO integration in polymer membranes enhances their stability, facilitates photocatalytic processes, and gravity-driven GO membranes enable filtration of pollutants at low pressure, making membrane filtration more inexpensive. 10. Graph convolutional networks in language and vision: A survey

Abstract

Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have a strong ability to learn graph representation and have achieved good performance in a range of applications, including social relationship analysis, biological information processing, natural language processing (NLP), computer vision (CV), and so on. In recent years, the application of GCNs in natural language processing and computer vision has attracted substantial interest from researchers, as a result of which many studies based on GCNs have emerged in the fields of natural language processing and computer vision. However, to the best of our knowledge, a comprehensive survey of GCN application in natural language processing and computer vision has not yet been conducted. Accordingly, this survey presents a comprehensive review of the principles of GCNs and its applications in these two fields. First, we summarize the principles of the two types of GCNs, namely spatial methods and spectral methods. Then we divide GCN applications into two categories: natural language processing and computer vision. Subsequently, we present multiple applications from each category in detail. Finally, we outline the limitations of GCNs and discuss possible future research directions.

Abstract

In the era of big data, tremendous amounts of information and data have drastically changed human civilization. The rapid growth in the number of documents generated everyday means that a large amount of knowledge is proposed, improved, and used. For readers, especially newcomers to a given field, excavating suitable knowledge entities from massive documents is time-consuming and labor-consuming, negatively impacting research efficiency. The broad availability of information provides more opportunities for people, but a new challenge has risen as well; that is, how to extract and use knowledge from numerous information resources, especially how to conduct knowledge extraction and text mining (TM) from massive documents in special domains. A knowledge entity is a relatively independent and integral knowledge module in a special discipline or research domain (Chang & Zheng, 2007). In scientific documents, knowledge entities refer to the knowledge mentioned or cited by authors, such as algorithms, models, theories, datasets, and software (Wang & Zhang, 2018), and reflect various resources used by the authors in problem-solving (Zhang, Mayr, Lu, & Zhang, 2020; Hou, Jochim, Gleize, Bonin, & Ganguly, 2019; Brack, D'Souza, Hoppe, Auer, & Ewerth, 2020). Extracting knowledge entities from numerous information resources is useful for multiple downstream tasks in information extraction, TM, natural language processing (NLP), information retrieval, digital library research, and so on. Particularly, in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), information science, and some other related disciplines, discovering methods from a large scale of academic literature, and evaluating the performance and influence of such methods, have become increasingly necessary and meaningful (Hou et al., 2020). Abstract

Quasi-elastic scattering measurements have been performed using $^{16}$O and $^{24}$Mg projectiles off $^{90}$Zr at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Experimental data have been analyzed in the framework of coupled channels (CC) calculations using the code CCFULL. The quasi-elastic scattering excitation function and derived barrier distribution for $^{16}$O + $^{90}$Zr reaction are well reproduced by the CC calculations using the vibrational coupling strengths for $^{90}$Zr reported in the literature. Using these vibrational coupling strengths, a Bayesian analysis is carried out for $^{24}$Mg + $^{90}$Zr reaction. The β2 and β4 values for $^{24}$Mg are determined to be +0.43±0.02 and −0.11±0.02, respectively. The β2 parameter determined in the present work is in good agreement with results obtained using inelastic scattering probes. The hexadecapole deformation of $^{24}$Mg has been measured very precisely for the first time. Present results establish that quasi-elastic scattering could provide a useful probe to determine the ground state deformation of atomic nuclei.

Abstract

© 2020 Reinforcement Learning (RL) is limited in practice by its poor explainability, which is responsible for insufficient trustiness from users, unsatisfied interpretation for human intervention, inadequate analysis for future improvement, etc. This paper seeks to partially characterize the interplay between dynamical environments and a previously-proposed Disturbance OBserver net (DOB-net). The DOB-net is trained via RL and offers optimal control for a set of Partially Observable Markovian Decision Processes (POMDPs). The transition function of each POMDP is largely determined by the environments (excessive external disturbances). This paper proposes an Attention-based Abstraction (A2) approach to extract a finite-state automaton, referred to as a Key Moore Machine Network (KMMN), to capture the switching mechanisms exhibited by the DOB-net in dealing with multiple such POMDPs. A2 first quantizes the controlled platform by learning continuous-discrete interfaces. Then it extracts the KMMN by finding the key hidden states and transitions that attract sufficient attention from the DOB-net. Within the resultant KMMN, three patterns of cyclic switchings (between key hidden states) are found, and saturated controls are shown synchronized with unknown disturbances. Interestingly, the found switchings have previously appeared in the control design for often-saturated systems. They are interpreted via an analogy to the discrete-event subsystem of hybrid control.

Abstract

A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons is performed with the L3 detector at LEP using data collected at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 183 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 88.3 pb-1 . The Higgs decays into a charm and a strange quark or into a tau lepton and its associated neutrino are considered. The observed candidates are consistent with the expectations from Standard Model background processes. A lower limit of 57.5 GeV on the charged Higgs mass is derived at 95% CL, independent of the decay branching ratio Br(H±→τν)., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract

We report on a study of radiative Bhabha and quasi-real Compton scattering at centre-of-mass energies between 50 GeV and 170 GeV, and 20 GeV and 140 GeV, respectively, using the L3 detector at LEP. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 232.2 pb-1 . A total of 2856 radiative Bhabha and 4641 Compton scattering events are collected. Total and differential cross sections for both reactions are presented and found to be in good agreement with QED expectations. Our measurement of Compton scattering at the highest energies obtained so far is used to derive exclusion limits on the coupling λ for the on-shell production of an excited electron e★ decaying into a γe pair in the mass range 20 GeV < me★ < 170 GeV., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract

Using the data collected with the L3 detector at LEP between 1990 and 1995, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 149 pb(-1), the tau longitudinal polarisation has been measured as a function of the production polar angle using the tau decays tau(-) --> h(-)nu(tau) (h = pi,rho,a(1)) and tau(-)-->l(-)(l)nu(tau) (l = e,mu). From this measurement the quantities A(c) and A(tau), which depend on the couplings of the electron and the tau to the Z, are determined to be A(c) = 0.1678 +/- 0.0127 +/- 0.0030 and A(tau) = 0.1476 +/- 0.0088 +/- 0.0062, consistent with the hypothesis of e-tau universality, Under this assumption a value of A(l) = 0.1540 +/- 0.0074 +/- 0.0044 is obtained, yielding the value of the effective weak mixing angle sin(2)(W) = 0.2306 +/- 0.0011. 27. A systematic method of evaluation of the Chinese natural gas supply security

Abstract

As a relatively clean energy, natural gas will be increasingly in demand to meet short-term low-carbon targets. The gap between the demand and supply of natural gas will be increasingly scrutinized, which highlights the significanceof natural gas supply security. Considering the extensive connections among various aspects related to natural gas supply and the comlex interactions behind these connections, ecological network analysis was applied to simulate the natural gas supply system in China and systemtically measure its overall security level. Network Information Analysis, Structural Analysis, and Utility Analysis were conducted. It is found that the Chinese natural gas supply security increased during 2000-2011. In terms of the influence of different comparments on the whole natural gas supply system, in order from the largest to smallest influence they are: supply sources, consumption sector, refining, and reserve sectors. And the relationships among compartments became stronger in the later stage than that in the earlier stage of the study period. Suggestions on improving China's natural gas supply security were proposed based on the results and further scenario analysis. The network model developed herein is a new perspective for natural gas supply security assessment, which can be used as guidance for policy making.

28. Towards a measurement of the half-life of 60Fe for stellar and early Solar System models

Abstract

Radioisotopes, produced in stars and ejected into the Interstellar Medium, are important for constraining stellar and early Solar System (ESS) models. In particular, the half-life of the radioisotope, 60Fe, can have an impact on calculations for the timing for ESS events, the distance to nearby Supernovae, and the brightness of individual, non-steady-state 60Fe gamma ray sources in the Galaxy. A half-life measurement has been undertaken at the University of Notre Dame and measurements of the 60Fe/56Fe concentration of our samples using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry has begun. This result will be coupled with an activity measurement of the isomeric decay in 60Co, which is the decay product of 60Fe. Preliminary half-life estimates of (2.53±0.24)×106 years seem to confirm the recent measurement by Rugel et al. (2009).

Abstract

Si1 xGex layers sandwiched between Si were grown at low temperature of 450 -C by molecular beam epitaxy. A comprehensive characterization has been performed on these heterostructures by multiple techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), photo- luminescence, Raman scattering, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), ion channeling and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). XRD confirmed the single crystallinity and the (100) orientation of the Si1 xGex layer. The Ge compositions and layer thicknesses were precisely determined by RBS. FTIR measurements revealed the vibration modes of Si–O–Si from the oxidation on surface and Si–H due to the hydrogenization during growth.

32. Two-pattern strings I—A recognition algorithm

Abstract

This paper introduces a new class of strings on {a,b}, called two-pattern strings, that constitute a substantial generalization of Sturmian strings while at the same time sharing many of their nice properties. In particular, we show in this paper that two-pattern strings can be recognized in time proportional to their length. This result is a prelude to showing that the repetitions in these substrings can also be computed in linear time, further that two-pattern strings occur in some sense frequently in the class of all strings on {a,b}.

33. Effects of agricultural market policy on crop production in China

Abstract

This paper investigates the effects of Chinese market policy on crop production in the reform process. After a brief review of the policy changes due to the reform, the theoretical significance of Chinese market policies for crop production is demonstrated diagrammatically. It is shown that under the current market system the production of main crops is significantly influenced by both market and quota prices. While relatively high quota reduces the influence of market prices on production, relative price changes between competing crops will lead to shifting farmers’ cultivation preferences if inputs are constant. Empirical analysis, based on cross-section data for the period 1985–1997 from the province of Zhejiang, confirms these hypotheses. The effects of policy variables, however, prove to be crop-specific. If the potential of crop production in China is to be better used, an even more market-oriented agricultural policy is required.

Abstract

The inclusive production of \eta mesons has been studied using 1.6 million hadronic Z decays collected with the L3 detector. The \eta multiplicity per event, the multiplicity for two-jet and three-jet events separately, and the multiplicity in each jet have been measured and compared with the predictions of different Monte Carlo programs. The momentum spectra of \eta in each jet have also been measured. We observe that the measured \eta momentum spectrum in quark-enriched jets agrees well with the Monte Carlo prediction while in gluon-enriched jets it is harder than that predicted by the Monte Carlo models.

Abstract

An upper limit on the lifetime difference of short- and long-lived $\rm B^0_s$ mesons has been obtained using an inclusive bottom hadron sample from 2 million hadronic Z decays collected by the L3 experiment at LEP. A lifetime fit has been performed on data samples separately enriched in neutral and charged b hadrons. An experimental upper limit on the decay rate difference of short- and long-lived $\rm B^0_s$ mesons of \begin{displaymath} ~~~~ {\rm (|\Delta\Gamma|/\Gamma)_{B^0_s}} < 0.67 ~~~~~~~\mathrm{(95\% \; C.L.)} \end{displaymath} has been determined. In addition, the lifetimes of $\rm B^+$ and $\rm B^0_d$ mesons have been measured to be $\tau(\rm B^+) = 1.66 \pm 0.06 \, \pm 0.03 \; \mathrm{ps}$ and $\tau(\rm B^0_d) = 1.52 \pm 0.06 \, \pm 0.04 \; \mathrm{ps}$, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic.

Abstract

The cytoskeleton of mammal oocytes provides structural support to the plasma membrane and contributes to critical cellular dynamic processes such as nuclear positioning, germinal vesicle breakdown, spindle orientation, chromosome segregation, polar body extrusion, and transmembrane signaling pathways. The ERM family (ezrin, radixin and moesin) well known as membrane-cytoskeletal crosslinkers play a crucial role in organizing plasma membrane domains through their capacity to interact with transmembrane proteins and the underlying cytoskeleton. Recent works mainly focused on the structural analysis of the ERM family members and their binding partners, together with multiple functions in cell mitosis, have significantly advanced our understanding of the importance of membrane-cytoskeletal interactions. In the present study, we documented that p-ERM was expressed and localized at cortical and nucleus during mouse oocyte meiosis. p-ERM and microfilaments were colocalized from GV to MII during mouse oocyte maturation. After being treated with cytochalasin B (CB), the F-actin was disassembled. Meanwhile, p-ERM exhibited a diffuse cytoplasmic distribution and no special staining was detected in either the oocyte membrane or condensed chromosomes. p-ERM depletion by trim-away caused the meiotic procedure arrest with a significantly lower polar body extrusion rate. Collectively, these data demonstrate that the subcellular distribution of p-ERM is correlated with microfilaments. 38. Impact of Imperata Cylindrica polysaccharide on liver lipid metabolism disorders caused by hyperuricemia.

Abstract

Elevated uric acid levels are associated with lipid metabolism disorders. The effects of Imperata cylindrica polysaccharide (ICPC-a) were explored using a hyperuricemia mouse model and a uric acid-induced HepG2 hepatocyte model. ICPC-a significantly improved total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein levels, and hepatic lipid deposition in hyperuricemia mice. The liver/body weight ratio decreased, and markers of liver damage, inflammation, and dyslipidemia improved. Metabolomics analysis suggested that ICPC-a modulates lipid metabolism by influencing the glycerophospholipid pathway and the enzyme LPCAT3. Stable HepG2 cell lines with knocked-down LPCAT3 were constructed, and Western blot and RT-PCR were used to assess the impact of its knockdown on lipid metabolism under uric acid stimulation. In cells with reduced LPCAT3 expression, ICPC-a was still able to alleviate uric acid-induced lipid accumulation, though the effect was less pronounced compared to cells with normal LPCAT3 levels. However, the effectiveness was diminished compared to cells where LPCAT3 was not knocked down. These findings indicated that LPCAT3 was an important target through which ICPC-a regulated lipid metabolism disorders induced by hyperuricemia. 39. Effects of calcium ions and polysaccharides type on transparent exopolymer particle formation and the related fouling mechanisms.

Abstract

Organics and divalent cations are the primary barriers constraining the performance of membrane technology, while the interactions between them and the detailed mechanisms of their impacts are still lacking in-depth analysis. In this study, sodium alginate and xanthan gum were selected as polysaccharides models, and the formation of transparent extracellular polymer particles (TEP) was assessed to examine the effect of Ca 2+ and polysaccharides type on membrane fouling from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. The results revealed that higher Ca 2+ concentrations led to a greater abundance of TEP, and the transformation of TEP microstructure is a key factor for the membrane fouling change indicated by specific filtration resistance (SFR). TEP formed by sodium alginate underwent a transformation from amorphous-TEP (a-TEP) form to particle-TEP (p-TEP), corresponding to a unimodal pattern of SFR variation. With increasing Ca 2+ concentration, the molecular interactions of xanthan gum became stronger, resulting in larger fibrous a-TEP and a continuous SFR increase. According to the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory, TEP formed by xanthan gum exhibited higher adhesion energy, thus causing more severe membrane fouling. The SFR variation of the TEP system can be satisfactorily explained by the conception of chemical potential change in the filtration process depicted in Flory-Huggins theory. This study is the first work to introduce models regarding chemical potential and TEP microstructure, linking the system chemical potential and TEP microstructure with membrane fouling indicated by SFR. 40. Research trends and emerging treatment in frozen shoulder research: A bibliometric analysis and meta-analysis.

Abstract

Frozen shoulder (FS), characterized by pain and restricted mobility, remains a challenging condition with unclear optimal treatment. This study aims to investigate the development of FS research, identify hotspot treatments, and verify their efficacy. Analyzing 3139 FS-related publications from the Web of Science Core Collection revealed a significant rise in publications (R 2  = 0.9478), with the United States as a leader in this research area. Our keyword analysis pinpointed suprascapular nerve block (SSNB) as a notable research focus since 2021. To assess the effectiveness of SSNB, we conducted a meta-analysis of eight randomized controlled trials including 435 patients. The results at the 6-8 weeks follow-up showed SSNB significantly reduced pain and improved active shoulder function compared to intra-articular corticosteroid injections (IACI). Specifically, SSNB led to considerable enhancements in abduction (SMD: 12.88; 95 % CI: 4.13, 21.64; p = 0.004; I 2  = 54 %), flexion (SMD: 9.16; 95 % CI: 6.50, 11.82; p < 0.00001; I 2  = 0 %), and external rotation (SMD: 18.03; 95 % CI: 6.59, 29.48; p = 0.008; I 2  = 59 %). Additionally, there was a significant reduction in Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) scores (SMD: 4.46; 95 % CIs: 7.75, -1.17; p = 0.008; I 2  = 59 %). Despite these findings, no differences were observed in the improvement of passive activities between the SSNB and IACI groups at any follow-up. 41. CXCL1-CXCR2 signaling mediates the activation of microglia in the nucleus tractus solitarii to promote pancreatic cancer-induced pain.

Abstract

Pancreatic cancer can cause severe abdominal pain. Its peripheral mechanisms have been studied, but the role of central nervous system in pancreatic cancer-induced pain remains unclear. The current study focused on the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS), a primary center of visceral sensation located in medulla oblongata. Neurons in the NTS were activated and exhibited increased excitability among mice with pancreatic cancer-induced pain. Transcriptome analysis revealed that pancreatic cancer-induced pain was associated with neuroinflammation in the NTS, involving changes in chemokines expression. In mice with pancreatic cancer-induced pain, the microglia activation in the NTS was observed, characterized by increased cell density and decreased process number and length, while injection of microglia inhibitor minocycline in the NTS alleviated pancreatic cancer-induced pain. The cytokine CXCL1 and its receptor CXCR2 were upregulated in the NTS of mice with pancreatic cancer-induced pain. Blocking CXCL1-CXCR2 signaling by injection of CXCL1 neutralizing antibody or CXCR2 antagonist SB225002 in the NTS of mice with pancreatic cancer-induced pain alleviated abdominal hypersensitivity and hunching behavior, and also reversed the activation of neurons and microglia. Additionally, injection of recombinant CXCL1 in the NTS of sham-operated mice induced abdominal pain, and activated the neurons and microglia. 42. Source contributions to two super dust storms over Northern China in March 2021 and the impact of soil moisture.

Abstract

Two extremely devastating super dust storms (SDS) hit Mongolia and Northern China in March 2021, causing many deaths and substantial economic damage. Accurate forecasting of dust storms is of great importance for avoiding or mitigating their effects. One of the most critical factors affecting dust emissions is soil moisture, but its value in desert exhibits significant uncertainty. In this study, model experiments were conducted to simulate dust emissions using four soil moisture datasets. The results were compared with observations to assess the effects of soil moisture on the dust emission strength. The Integrated Source Apportionment Method (ISAM) was used to track the dust sources and quantify the contribution from each source region to the dust load over the North China Plain (NCP), Korea peninsula, and western Japan. The results show large differences in the dust load depending on the soil moisture datasets used. The high soil moisture in the NCEP dataset results in substantial underestimation of the dust emission flux and PM 10 concentration. Despite a minor overestimation of PM 10 concentrations in many Northern China cities, the ERA5 dataset yields the best simulation performance. During the two SDS events, about 7.5 Mt dust was released from the deserts in Mongolia and 2.8 Mt from the deserts in China. Abstract

Identifying the species and origin of adhesives in criminal investigations aids in narrowing inquiry scope and supporting case detection. This study introduces two advanced combined analytical techniques for distinguishing adhesive species, including attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) combined with Raman spectroscopy, and headspace gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) together with multivariate statistical analysis. ATR-FTIR categorized seven adhesives into three groups based on the base materials, with further differentiation achieved via Raman spectra. Analysis of volatile components identified 79 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with esters being the most concentrated. The fingerprint profile clearly illustrated the characteristic fingerprint sequence and unique marker compounds of each adhesive, effectively enabling their differentiation. Multivariate statistical analysis methods, including principal component analysis (PCA), orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), heatmap, and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), were utilized to visually interpret the classification of adhesives. 44. Successful Aging Rates of Global Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Abstract

Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to qualitatively analyze the different aspects of the successful aging (SA) criteria and quantitatively assess the rate of SA and its different dimensions among people aged ≥60 years globally to provide a basis for constructing criteria for SA., Design: This is a systematic review and meta-analysis, which has been registered on PROSPERO (CRD42024585934)., Setting and Participants: Older adults (≥60 years)., Methods: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of science, SCOPUS, and PsycINFO (inception to July 17, 2023) were used to search for relevant studies to evaluate the comprehensive level of SA. A random effects model was used to synthesize SA rates and 95% CIs. Quality assessment was conducted using the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research criteria and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Statistical analyses were conducted using Revman 5.3 and Stata 11.0., Results: A total of 546,228 older adults from 64 studies were incorporated into the meta-analysis. In the 64 studies, SA criteria mentioned 11 aspects: psychology, disease, cognitive function, physical function, social engagement, disability, independence, self-rated health, economy, memory impairment, and obesity. The meta-analysis indicated that the summary estimate of SA rate among people aged ≥60 years was 22.0% (95% CI 19.0%-25.0%) globally. A meta-analysis was conducted on the 6 aspects included more commonly in SA criteria, and the results showed that the rate of no disability was the highest (72.0%), followed by good psychological status (69%), active social engagement (65%), high cognitive function (64%), and high physical function (62%), with no major diseases being the lowest (50.0%)., Conclusions and Implications: The overall estimated SA rate among people aged ≥60 years was 22% globally. The SA criteria mainly include 6 aspects: good psychological status, no major diseases, high cognitive function, high physical function, active social engagement, and no disability. Abstract

Minimizing the detrimental impacts of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on human health is a daunting task. Here, we aimed to propose effective strategies for reducing PFOA-induced mitochondrial toxicity in human liver and intestinal cells. PFOA could occupy the fatty acid-binding pockets of human peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (hPPARα). PFOA not only could structurally interact with hPPARα, but also substantially upregulated the expression levels of PPARα and its downstream gene (i.e., pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK4)). The increased expression of PDK4 was associated with the mitochondrial toxicity of PFOA, and inhibition of PDK4 or knock-down of PDK4 could effectively attenuate the mitochondrial toxicity of PFOA. Moreover, modification of carboxyl group via an esterification of PFOA into methyl perfluorooctanoate (MePFOA) decreased the affinity to hPPARα, resulting in the loss of upregulated expressions of PPARα and PDK4. Lower mitochondrial toxicity and cytotoxicity were found in the MePFOA-treated cells compared to PFOA exposure. Our study supported that the carboxyl group of PFOA (as functional head group) was required for inducing its mitochondrial toxicity. 46. Highly efficient removal and real-time visual detection of fluoride ions using ratiometric CAU-10-NH 2 @RhB: Probe design, sensing performance, and practical applications.

Abstract

The extensive use of fluoride in agriculture, industry, medicine, and daily necessities has raised growing concerns about fluoride residue. To date, real-time visual detection and efficient removal of fluoride ions from water remain greatly desirable. Herein, nano-CAU-10-NH 2 @RhB is introduced as a ratiometric fluorescent probe and efficient scavenger for the intelligent detection and removal of fluoride ions. CAU-10-NH 2 @RhB is readily obtained through one-pot synthesis and exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for real-time fluoride ion detection, with a naked-eye distinguishable color change from pink to blue. A portable device for point-of-care testing was developed based on color hue analysis readout using a smartphone. A quantitative response was achieved across a wide concentration range, with a detection limit of 54.2 nM. Adsorption experiments suggest that nano-CAU-10-NH 2 @RhB serves as an efficient fluoride ion scavenger, with a fluoride adsorption capacity of 49.3 mg/g. Moreover, the mechanistic study revealed that hydrogen bonds formed between fluoride ions and amino groups of CAU-10-NH 2 @RhB are crucial for the detection and adsorption of fluoride ions. Abstract

Mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) is considered a harmful neurotoxin, and real-time monitoring of Hg 2+ concentrations in environmental and biological samples is critical. Fluorescent probes are a rapidly emerging visualization tool owing to their simple design and good selectivity. Herein, a novel fluorescence (FL) probe 2-(4-((6-((quinolin-8-yloxy)methyl)pyridin-2-yl)methyl)piperazin-1-yl)anthracene-9,10-dione (QPPA) is designed using piperazine as a linker between the anthraquinone group, which serves as a fluorophore, and N 4 O as the Hg 2+ ligand. The probe exhibits FL "turn-on" sensing of Hg 2+ because the complex inhibits the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process. Moreover, QPPA can overcome the invasion by other possible cations, resulting in a clear color change from orange to colorless with the addition Hg 2+ . The chelation of QPPA with Hg 2+ in a 1:1 ratio. Subsequently, the theoretically determined binding sites of the ligand to Hg 2+ are validated through 1 H NMR titration. The in situQPPA-Hg 2+ complex can be subjected to Hg 2+ extraction following the introduction of S 2- owing to its robust binding capacity. The exceptional limit of detection values for Hg 2+ and S 2- are obtained as 63.0 and 79.1 nM (S/N = 3), respectively. Abstract

Chronic infection with Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) often results in a dysfunctional virus-specific T cell response hampering viral clearance. Paradoxically, intrahepatic inflammatory responses that contribute more to liver histopathology than to viral suppression are commonly observed, which are widely believed to be cell mediated. The involvement of humoral immunity in this process however is not well documented. To investigate the possible roles of HBV Capsid-Antibody Complexes (CACs) in eliciting chronic liver inflammation, we developed a novel microplate-based assay for the quantification of CACs in serum. The CACs assay showed high sensitivity and specificity with its readout closely correlating with the molecular features of CACs. A cross-sectional study on untreated chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients showed a 77% positive rate for CACs with significant association with alanine transaminase (ALT), intrahepatic inflammation, and complement deposition, suggestive of its functional role in hepatic injury. Multiple staining of complement activation fragment C4d with major leukocyte and myofibroblast markers revealed an intertwined picture in periportal area with a morphology reminiscent of "piecemeal necrosis". In a pooled cohort with ALT levels lower than 40 IU/ml, CACs alone revealed subclinical liver inflammation. We provide definitive evidence for a causative role for CACs in complement-mediated intrahepatic immunopathology, an additional mechanism contributing to liver damage in CHB. Abstract

The application of the simulation-optimization method for groundwater contamination source identification (GCSI) encounters two main challenges: the substantial time cost of calling the simulation model, and the limitations on the accuracy of identification results due to the complexity, nonlinearity, and ill-posed nature of the inverse problem. To address these issues, we have innovatively developed an inversion framework based on ensemble learning strategies. This framework comprises a stacking ensemble model (SEM), which integrates three distinct machine learning models (Extremely Randomized Trees, Adaptive Boosting, and Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit), and an ensemble optimizer (E-GKSEEFO), which combines two newly proposed swarm intelligence optimizers (Genghis Khan Shark Optimizer and Electric Eel Foraging Optimizer). Specifically, the SEM serves as a surrogate model for the groundwater numerical simulation model. Compared to the original simulation model, it significantly reduces time cost while maintaining accuracy. The E-GKSEEFO, functioning as the search strategy for the optimization model, greatly enhances the accuracy of the optimization results. We have verified the performance of the SEM-E-GKSEEFO ensemble inversion framework through two hypothetical scenarios derived from an actual coal gangue pile. The results are as follows. (1) The SEM exhibits improved fitting performance compared to single machine learning models when dealing with high-dimensional nonlinear data from GCSI. (2) The E-GKSEEFO achieves significantly higher accuracy in the identification results of GCSI than individual optimizers. 50. Unveiling the therapeutic potential and mechanism of inulin in DSS-induced colitis mice.

Abstract

Inulin has been reported to alleviate colitis. In this study, colitis patients' feces were used to simulate fermentation to demonstrate changes in the microbiota profile in the presence of inulin. We found inulin can reshape the gut microbiota profile of colitis patients, especially by altering the abundance of Faecalibacterium and Blautia. Interestingly, the subsequent co-culture with inulin demonstrated that inulin promoted the growth of these two strains of bacteria. The dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced mouse model was used to examine the effect of inulin and its combination with two probiotics on colitis. Results showed that all three treatments can alleviate the clinical symptoms, including weight-losing, colon-shortening, and the Disease Activity Index (DAI) score. Further investigations showed that the administrations regulate colitis mice's pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-17. Also, they alter the relative abundance of Faecalibacterium and Blautia, change the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) profile in the cecum and colon, and improve the intestinal barrier; specifically, the intervention increased the expressions of Claudin, Occludin, Zonula Occludens (ZO)-1, and Mucin (MUC)-2 in colonic tissues, thus restoring the colonic tissue structure and morphology of colitis mice. Collectively, our results confirm that inulin can alter the colitis patients' characteristic microbial community, and they can ameliorate experimental colitis by inhibiting the TRL4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway-improving the inflammatory response and enhancing the intestinal barrier.
