Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks among the top causes of mortality globally. Gut inflammation is one crucial risk factor that augments CRC development since patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease have an increased incidence of CRC. The role of immunoglobulin (Ig)A in maintaining gut homeostasis and preventing inflammation has been well established. Our earlier work demonstrated that the marginal zone and B1 cell-specific protein (MZB1) promotes gut IgA secretion and its absence results in pronounced dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS)-induced colitis. In the present study, we explored the role of MZB1 in CRC development using the azoxymethane (AOM)/DSS-induced CRC model. We observed an increase in both the number and size of the tumor nodules in Mzb1 -/- mice compared with Mzb1 +/+ mice. The increase in CRC development and progression in Mzb1 -/- mice was associated with reduced intestinal IgA levels, altered gut flora, and more severe gut and systemic inflammation. Oral administration of the monoclonal IgA, W27, alleviated both the gut inflammation and AOM/DSS-induced CRC. Notably, cohousing Mzb1 +/+ and Mzb1 -/- mice from the 10th day after birth led to similar CRC development. Our findings underscore the pivotal role of MZB1-mediated IgA secretion in suppressing the onset and progression of CRC triggered by gut inflammation. Moreover, our study highlights the profound impact of microbiota composition, modulated by gut IgA levels, on gut inflammation. Previous research concerning the effect of land reclamation on seawater intrusion mostly focused on the modification of the saltwater wedge and the dynamics of freshwater-saltwater interface after land reclamation, utilizing both analytical and numerical models. So far, the impact of land reclamation on the recharging and accumulation of land-based pollutants such as nitrate has been disregarded. In this work, we are the first to examine the impact of land reclamation on the discharge of nitrate together with the movement of saltwater. The influence of reclamation area and filled soil permeability on nitrate pollution and saltwater redistribution is revealed using a series of field-scale simulations based on numerical models including density flow combined with reactive transport. It was discovered that land reclamation might, on the one hand, result in a substantial redistribution based on the initial saltwater-freshwater interface and, on the other hand, significantly modify the nitrate discharge. This in total would drastically alter the distribution of nitrate in the subsurface. The reclamation area and the permeability of the reclamation material are the two elements that determine the amount of variance. For the cases with hydraulic conductivities increasing from 5 to 50 m/d, the salt mass reduction rate showed a trend of first increased (84.78 %-95.58 %) and then slowly decreased (95.58 %-74.01 %). Meanwhile, the nitrate reduction rate decreased from 80.08 % to 12.93 %, when hydraulic conductivities increased from 5 to 50 m/d. It was also found that coastal nitrate accumulation was always intensified with the enlargement of the reclamation area. For the coastal aquifers, recent research have shown that the tidal has a significant effect on saltwater intrusion in the near-shore aquifer. However, it is currently unclear how the tidal river contributes to the groundwater flow and salinity distribution in the upstream aquifer of the estuary. This study examined the effects of a tidal river on the dynamic characteristics of groundwater flow and salt transport in a tidal river-coastal aquifer system using field monitoring data and numerical simulations. It was found that changes in tidal-river level led to the reversal of groundwater flow. For a tidal cycle, the maximum area of seawater intrusion is about 41.16 km 2 at the end of the high tide stage. Then the area gradually decreased to 39.02 km 2 at the end of the low tide stage. More than 2 km 2 area variation can be observed in a tidal cycle. Compared to the low tide stage, the area of SWI increased by 5 % at high tide stage. The SWI region was also spreading landward from the tidal river. In addition, we quantified the water exchange and salt flux between the tidal river and aquifer. When the tidal fell below the level of the riverbed, the water exchange rate was stabilized at about -1.6 m/h. The negative value indicated that the river was recharged by the groundwater. With the increasing of tidal water level, the water exchange rate gradually changes from negative to positive and reached the maximum value of 3.2 m/h at the beginning of the falling tide stage. The presence of a physical river dam can amplify the difference in water level between high and low tides, thereby enhancing the influence of a tidal river on water exchange and salt flux. We here propose a two-step approach-based simulation-optimization model for multi-objective groundwater remediation using enhanced random vector functional link (ERVFL) and evolutionary marine predator algorithm (EMPA). In this study, groundwater flow and solute transport models are developed using MODFLOW and MT3DMS. The ERVFL network is used to approximate the flow and transport models, enhancing the computational performance. This study also improves the robustness of the ERVFL network using a kernel density estimator (KDE) based weighted least square approach. We further develop the EMPA by modifying the marine predator algorithm (MPA) using elite opposition-based learning, biological evolution operators, and elimination mechanisms. In the multi-objective version of EMPA, the non-dominated/Pareto-optimal solutions are stored in an external repository using an archive controller and adaptive grid mechanism to promote better convergence and diversity of the Pareto front. The proposed methodologies are applied for multi-objective groundwater remediation of a hypothetical unconfined aquifer based on the two-step method. The first step directly integrates flow and transport models with EMPA and finds the optimal locations of pumping wells by minimizing the percent of contaminant mass remaining in the aquifer. In the second step, the ERVL-based proxy model is integrated with EMPA and used for multi-objective optimization while explicitly using the pumping well locations obtained in the first step. The multi-objective optimization generates a Pareto-optimal solution representing the relationship between the rate of pumping and the amount of contaminant mass in the aquifer. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has experienced numerous hydrometeorological disasters along with it. The pandemic has made disaster relief work more challenging for humanitarian organizations and governments. This study aims to provide an overview of the topics/issues of concern in the countries while responding to hydrometeorological extreme events (e.g., floods and cyclones) during the pandemic. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a computational topic modeling technique, is employed to reduce the numerous (i.e., 1771) humanitarian reports/news to key terms and meaningful topics for 24 countries. Several insights are derived from the LDA results. It is identified that countries have suffered multiple crises (such as locust attacks, epidemics and conflicts) during the pandemic. Maintaining social distancing while disaster evacuation and circumventing the lockdown for relief work have been difficult. Children are an important topic for most countries; however, other vulnerable groups such as women and the disabled also need to be focused upon. Hygiene is not a highly weighted topic, which is of concern during a pandemic that mandates good sanitation to control it effectively. However, health is of great importance for almost all countries. The novelty of the paper lies in its interdisciplinary approach (usage of a computational technique in disaster management studies) and the timely examination of disaster management experiences during the ongoing pandemic. We propose a simulation-optimization (SO) model based on a novel two-step strategy for the optimal design of groundwater remediation systems. The SO models are developed by coupling simulation models directly or through the extreme learning machine (ELM) with evolutionary hunting strategy based metaheuristics (EHSMs). In the first step, EHSMs with a combinatorial optimization technique are used to obtain optimal pumping locations by minimizing the percentage of contaminant mass that remained in the aquifer while keeping the pumping strategy as constant. In the second step, the optimal pumping locations are directly used as input, and a composite function is employed to minimize the sum of the water extraction rates and the percentage of extracted contaminant mass by constraining hydraulic heads and contaminant concentrations. The performance of the two-step strategy is found to be slightly better and computationally more efficient than the alternate approach. Photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation processes (AOP) are emerging technology for the degradation of refractory organic pollutant in the field of water treatment. Here we report a novel CoO@TiO 2 /MXene (CTM) hybrid through a facile sonication-hydrothermal method for efficient degradation of phenol via an integrated PMS activation-photocatalysis process. Benefiting from the proper position and superior suitability of the band structure, a dual interfacial charge transport channel was constructed, boosting the separation of photo-generated charge carriers and generating sufficient potential difference for redox reaction. Accordingly, the CTM hybrid not only possessed the outstanding photocatalytic activity but also dramatically accelerated PMS activation to generate considerable reactive radicals. As a result, over 96% phenol degradation was achieved in the 10% CTM/PMS/Vis system within 15 min. The radical quenching test and EPR analysis reveal that SO 4 •- , O 2 •- and 1 O 2 were predominant reactive species involved in the catalytic process. Moreover, the damaged chemical structure of CoO during PMS activation could be healed by the photo-actuated Co(II) regeneration to allow for continuous and stable catalytic process. The transformation of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in the drinking water treatment plants could be closely associated with nitrogenous disinfection by-product (N-DBP) formation. In this study, we have assessed the molecular transformation of DON and its impact on N-DBP formation in a full scale drinking water treatment plant. Based on the result of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) analysis, DON compounds with low molecular weight (<1 kDa) were classified as CHON, CHON 2 and CHON 3 according to the number of nitrogen atoms. Via the analytical window of van Krevelen diagrams, we found that the molecular structural features of CHON, CHON 2 and CHON 3 were not altered before the chlorination process. In detail, the CHON 2 and CHON 3 compositions were concentrated on the regions assigned to a lignin-structure while CHON compositions were also distributed in other compounds including proteins, carbohydrates and tannin. Furthermore, CHON formation was more difficult to be removed before the V-filter process. For N-DBP, chlorine-containing DON (Cl-DON) composition was likely to be removed through flocculation and sedimentation processes, whereas N-nitrosamine compounds were removed in V-filter and biological activated carbon filter processes.
