Background: Probiotic supplementation has a positive effect on endurance exercise performance and body composition in athletes, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Gut microbiota can provide measurable markers of immune function in athletes, and microbial composition analysis may be sensitive enough to detect stress and metabolic disorders caused by exercise. Methods: Nineteen healthy active amateur marathon runners (15 male and 4 female) with a mean age of 29.11 years volunteered to participate in this double-blind controlled study. Based on the performance of the Cooper 12-min running test (CRT), the participants were allocated into two groups to receive either a probiotic formulation comprising lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium longum (n = 10) or placebo containing maltodextrin (n = 9) for five weeks. Consistency of diet and exercise was ensured throughout the experimental period. Before and after the intervention, all participants were assessed for CRT, emotional stability and gastrointestinal symptoms, gut microbiota composition, body composition and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicators of skeletal muscle microcirculation. Results: Compared to before the intervention, the probiotics group showed an increase in CRT score (2.88 ± 0.57 vs 3.01 ± 0.60 km, P＜0.05), significant improvement in GSRS and GIQLI (9.20 ± 4.64 vs 7.40 ± 3.24, 118.90 ± 12.30 vs 127.50 ± 9.85, P＜0.05), while these indicators remained unchanged in the control group, with a significant time-group interaction effect on gastrointestinal symptoms. Additionally, some MRI metabolic cycling indicators of the thigh skeletal muscle also changed in the probiotics group (P＜0.05). Regarding microbiota abundance, the probiotics group exhibited a significant increase in the abundance of beneficial bacteria and a significant decrease in the abundance of harmful bacteria post-intervention (P＜0.05). Conclusion: As a sports nutritional supplement, probiotics have the potential to improve athletic performance by optimizing the balance of gut microbiota, alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms.

We proposed and fabricated a miniaturized multi-core fiber grating vibration sensor. The size of the miniaturized vibration sensor is 10mm × 10mm × 10 mm with a mass of only 0.25g. Finite element analysis and experimental tests were carried out to validate the performance of the vibration sensor. The experiment results indicate that the sensor has a sensitivity of 68.72 pm/g in the X direction and 64.52 pm/g in the Y direction within the operating frequency range of 20–240Hz. The cross-interference between the two directions of vibration measurement falls within 4 %. The sensor is suitable for measuring mechanical vibrations in the mid-low frequency range, especially in cases where size, quality, and distributed measurement are of particular concern.

Power transformer diagnostic methods based on traditional intelligent learning are affected by the scarcity of transformer fault data, which hinders their further application and prevents them from obtaining high diagnostic accuracy. To solve this problem, a few-shot method based on Gaussian Prototype Network (GPN) is proposed to achieve an effective and accurate diagnosis of power transformers using even a small number of fault samples. The method is an organic combination of embedding network and distance metric. The proposed approach is verified by datasets of dissolved gas and literature, which come from real power transformers and historical data. The results show that the method can achieve up to 96.7% accuracy, which is suitable for the field of power transformer fault diagnosis.

The rhizome of Corydalis decumbens is a traditional Chinese medicine commonly utilized in the clinical treatment of acute ischemic stroke. Numerous phytochemical and biological investigations have demonstrated that protoberberine alkaloids from C. decumbens exhibit diverse pharmaceutical activities against various diseases. Sinometumine E (SE), a protoberberine alkaloid isolated from C. decumbens for the first time, is characterized by a complex 6/6/6/6/6/6 hexacyclic skeleton. In the current study, we investigated the protective effects of SE on endothelial cell injury and its angiogenesis effects in zebrafish. The results suggested that SE showed significant anti-ischemic effects on OGD/R-induced HBEC-5i and HUVECs cell ischemia/reperfusion injury model. Furthermore, it promoted angiogenesis in PTK787-induced, MPTP-induced, and atorvastatin-induced vessel injury models of zebrafish, while also suppressing hypoxia-induced locomotor impairment in zebrafish. Transcriptome sequencing analysis provided a sign that SE likely to promotes angiogenesis through the HIF-1/VEGF signaling pathway to exert anti-ischemic effects. Consistently, SE modulated several genes related to HIF-1/VEGF signal pathway, such as hif-1, vegf, vegfr-2, pi3k, erk, akt and plcγ. Molecular docking analysis revealed that VEGFR-2 exhibited high binding affinity with SE, and western blot analysis confirmed that SE treatment enhanced the expression of VEGFR-2. In conclusion, our study profiled the angiogenic activities of SE in vitro and in vivo. The key targets and related pathways involved in anti-ischemic effects of SE, shedding light on the pharmacodynamic components and mechanisms of Corydalis decumbens, and provides valuable insights for identifying effective substances for the treatment of ischemic stroke.

Background: Bronchiectasis has high rates of hemoptysis and recurrent hemoptysis, which is inconsistent among various etiologies. Idiopathic bronchiectasis and post-tuberculous bronchiectasis are two important etiologies in China, but the differences in clinical features and risk factors of recurrent hemoptysis have not been elucidated. Methods: Patients hospitalized for idiopathic bronchiectasis or post-tuberculosis bronchiectasis were included. Patients were followed up for at least 24 months post-BAE. Demographic characteristics and clinical data were collected and analyzed between idiopathic bronchiectasis and post-tuberculosis bronchiectasis. Based on the outcomes of recurrent severe hemoptysis in patients with post-tuberculosis bronchiectasis, Cox regression models were used to identify risk factors for recurrence. Results: Among 417 patients including 352 idiopathic bronchiectasis and 65 post-tuberculous bronchiectasis, 209 (50.1%) were females. Albumin has a variety of biological functions, such as immunomodulatory and antioxidant activity, which depends largely on its thiol activity. However, in clinical trials, the treatment of albumin by injection of commercial human serum albumin (HSA) did not achieve the desired results. Here, we constructed reduced modified albumin (SH-Alb) for in vivo and in vitro experiments to investigate the reasons why HSA did not achieve the expected effects. SH-Alb was found to delay the progression of liver fibrosis in mice by alleviating liver inflammation and oxidative stress. Although R-Alb also has some of the above roles, the effect of SH-Alb is more remarkable. Mechanism studies have shown that SH-Alb reduces the release of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic cytokine through the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. In addition, SH-Alb deacetylates SOD2, a key enzyme of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, by promoting the expression of SIRT3, thereby reducing the accumulation of ROS. Finally, macrophages altered by R-Alb or SH-Alb can inhibit the activation of hepatic stellate cells and endothelial cells, further delaying the progression of liver fibrosis. These results indicate that SH-Alb can remodel the phenotype of macrophages, thereby affecting the intrahepatic microenvironment and delaying the process of liver fibrosis. It provides a good foundation for the application of albumin in clinical treatment.

Objective: Although glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is known to regulate feeding, the central mechanisms contributing to this function remain enigmatic. Here, we aim to test the role of neurons expressing GLP-1 receptors (GLP-1R) in the dorsolateral septum (dLS; dLSGLP−1R) that project to the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) on food intake and determine the relationship with feeding regulation. Methods: Using chemogenetic manipulations, we assessed how activation or inhibition of dLSGLP−1R neurons affected food intake in Glp1r-ires-Cre mice. Then, we used channelrhodopsin-assisted circuit mapping, chemogenetics, and electrophysiological recordings to identify and assess the role of the pathway from dLSGLP−1R →LHA projections in regulating food intake. Results: Chemogenetic inhibition of dLSGLP−1R neurons increases food intake. LHA is a major downstream target of dLSGLP−1R neurons. The dLSGLP−1R→LHA projections are GABAergic, and chemogenetic inhibition of this pathway also promotes food intake. While chemogenetic activation of dLSGLP−1R→LHA projections modestly decreases food intake, optogenetic stimulation of the dLSGLP−1R→LHA projection terminals in the LHA rapidly suppresses feeding behavior. Finally, we demonstrate that the GLP-1R agonist, Exendin 4 enhances dLSGLP−1R →LHA GABA release. Conclusions: Together, these results demonstrate that dLS-GLP-1R neurons and the inhibitory pathway to LHA can regulate feeding behavior, which might serve as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of eating disorders or obesity.

Objective: This is a comprehensive overview of long-term cancer survival in Zhejiang Province, China. Hybrid analysis, a combination of cohort and period analysis, has been proposed to derive up-to-date cancer survival estimates. Using this approach, we aimed to timely and accurately analyze the 5-year relative survival (RS) and net survival (NS) in cancer registries of Zhejiang Province, China. Methods: A total of 255,725 new cancer cases diagnosed during 2013–2017 were included in 14 cancer registries in Zhejiang Province, China, with a follow-up on vital status until the end of 2019. The hybrid analysis was used to calculate the 5-year RS and 5-year NS during 2018–2019 for overall and stratifications by sex, cancer type, region, and age at diagnosis. Results: During 2018–2019, the age-standardized 5-year RS and NS for overall cancer in Zhejiang was 47.5% and 48.6%, respectively. The age-standardized 5-year RS for cancers of women (55.4%) was higher than that of men (40.0%), and the rate of urban areas (49.7%) was higher than that of rural areas (43.1%). The 5-year RS declined along with age, from 84.4% for ages 74 years. Our results of the RS and NS showed the similar trend and no significant difference. The top five cancers with top age-standardized 5-year RS were thyroid cancer (96.0%), breast cancer (84.3%), testicular cancer (79.9%), prostate cancer (77.2%), and bladder cancer (70.6%), and the five cancers with the lowest age-standardized 5-year RS were pancreatic cancer (6.0%), liver cancer (15.6%), gallbladder cancer (17.1%), esophageal cancer (22.7%), and leukemia (31.0%). Conclusions: We reported the most up-to-date 5-year cancer RS and NS in Zhejiang Province, China for the first time, and found that the 5-year survival for cancer patients in Zhejiang during 2018–2019 was relatively high. The population-based cancer registries are recognized as key policy tools that can be used to evaluate both the impact of cancer prevention strategies and the effectiveness of health systems.

Sugar beet has strong drought resistance and requires a large amount of nitrogen (N) during growth. Can deficit irrigation combined with low N supply of sugar beet improve water productivity (WP) and N use efficiency (NUE)? In this field study in 2020–2021, two irrigation regimes (W1, field capacity (FC) of the 0–60 cm soil layer was not lower than 70% from 45 days after emergence (DAE) to harvest period; W2, FC of the 0–60 cm soil layer was not lower than 50% in 45–90 DAE, but was consistent with that of W1 after 90 DAE) and three N application rates (0 (N0), 150 (N1), and 225 (N2) kg N ha−1) were designed. Then, their impacts on taproot yield (TY), water consumption (WC) and N uptake (NU) were explored. The results showed that there was no significant difference in TY between W2 and W1 treatments under the N1 and N2 levels. Under the N1 and N2 levels, the daily water consumption (DWC, 0.121 and 0.125 mm ℃d−1) and daily N uptake (DNU, 53.6 and 71.6 g N ℃d−1) of W2 treatment were significantly lower than the DWC (0.161 and 0.164 mm ℃d−1) and DNU (60.6 and 86.5 g N ℃d−1) of W1 treatment in 0–90 DAE. The W2N1 treatment had similar WP and higher NUE compared with the W1N2 treatment. In addition, the fertilizer-15N recovery rate in W2N1 treatment was 8.8% higher than that in W1N2 treatment, the fertilizer-15N loss rate was 6.6% lower than that in W1N2 treatment, but there was no difference in the fertilizer-15N residue between the two. This study clarified that implementing W2 deficit irrigation (50% FC at the canopy rapid growth stage (45–90 DAE)) and N1 nitrogen application rate (33% nitrogen reduction based on 225 kg N ha−1) could not reduce TY but improve WP and NUE.

Summary: Quantum secret sharing (QSS) represents the fusion of quantum mechanics principles with secret information sharing, allowing a sender to distribute a secret among receivers for collective recovery. This paper introduces the concept of quantum anonymous secret sharing (QASS) to enhance the practicality of such protocols. We propose a QASS protocol leveraging W states, ensuring both recover-security and anonymity of shared secrets. Our protocol undergoes rigorous evaluation verifying their accuracy and fortifying their security against scenarios involving the active adversary. Additionally, acknowledging the imperfections inherent in real-world communication channels, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of protocol security and efficacy in noisy quantum networks. Our investigations reveal that W states exhibit good performance in mitigating noise interference, making them apt for practical applications.

Background: Chronic fatigue is a predominant symptom of post COVID-19 condition, or long COVID. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) for fatigue post COVID-19 infection. Methods: Ten English and Chinese language databases and grey literature were searched up to 12 April 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Cochrane “Risk of bias” (RoB) tool was applied. Evidence certainty was assessed using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). Effect estimates were presented as risk ratio (RR) or mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Thirteen RCTs with 1632 participants were included. One RCT showed that Bufei Huoxue herbal capsules reduced fatigue (n=129, MD -14.90, 95%CI -24.53 to -5.27), one RCT reported that Ludangshen herbal liquid lowered fatigue (n=184, MD -1.90, 95%CI -2.38 to -1.42), and the other one RCT shown that fatigue disappearance rate was higher with Ludangshen herbal liquid (n=184, RR 4.19, 95%CI 2.06 to 8.53). Compared to traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation (TCM-rahab) alone, one RCT showed that fatigue symptoms were lower following Qingjin Yiqi granules plus TCM-rehab (n=388, MD -0.48, 95%CI -0.50 to -0.46). Due to concerns with RoB and/or imprecision, the certainty in this evidence was low to very low. No serious adverse events was reported. Conclusions: Limited evidence suggests that various TCIM interventions might reduce post COVID-19 fatigue. Larger, high quality RCTs of longer duration are required to confirm these preliminary findings. Study Registration: The protocol of this review has been registered at PROSPERO: CRD42022384136.

Reasonable zoning is essential for maintaining the integrity and stability of natural ecosystems and achieving multi-goal management of national parks, and can facilitate efficient management and protection of various resources. Biocultural diversity is an important result and outstanding representation of human-land relationships, directly affecting the resilience of socio-ecological systems. Taking Kunlun Mountains National Park in Qinghai Province (KMNP) as an example, we transformed the dualistic conservation model of biology and culture, and the Coupling Coordination Degree Model (CCDM) was used to establish a technical framework for the functional zoning of national parks based on the collaborative protection of biological diversity and cultural diversity. The research results indicated that biocultural diversity and its coupling relationship of KMNP are relatively good, with high coupling areas mainly dominated by cultural diversity and low coupling areas mainly by biological diversity. The research suggests that KMNP should be divided into 4 functional zones: strict protection area, ecological conservation area, traditional utilization area, and comprehensive development area. These findings provide references for the planning and construction of national parks and reserves around the world, to unleash their transformative potential in addressing global biodiversity loss.

Aims: This study aims to delve into the anti-fatigue and sleep-aiding effects of various formulations containing Ganoderma lucidum extracts. Materials and methods: PGB [incorporating Ganoderma lucidum extract (GE), broken Ganoderma lucidum spore powder (GB) and Paecilomyces hepiali mycelium (PH)] and GBS [composed of GE, GB, and Ganoderma sinense powder (GS)] were chosen as representative recipes for this study. Mice were treated with these recipes or key components of Ganoderma lucidum for 14 consecutive days. Subsequently, a weight-bearing swimming experiment was conducted to assess the mice's exhaustion time and evaluate the anti-fatigue properties of the recipes. Sleep-aiding effects were analyzed by measuring the sleep latency and duration. Furthermore, levels of blood lactic acid, serum urea nitrogen, hepatic glycogen, muscle glycogen, and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in the livers and muscles. Key findings: The anti-fatigue abilities of the tested mice were significantly improved after treatment with PGB and their sleep quality improved as well with GBS treatment. PGB treatment for 14 days could significantly prolong the exhaustion time in weight-bearing swimming (from 10.1 ± 0.5 min to 15.2 ± 1.3 min). Meanwhile, glycogen levels in the livers and muscles were significantly increased, while the levels of serum lactic acid, serum urea nitrogen, and MDA in the livers and muscles were significantly decreased. In contrast, mice treated with GBS for 14 days experienced significant improvements in sleep quality, with shortened sleep latency (from 6.8 ± 0.7 min to 4.2 ± 0.4 min), extended sleep duration (from 88.3 ± 1.4 min to 152.5 ± 9.3 min), and decreased muscle MDA levels. These results indicated that Ganoderma lucidum extracts can be used for anti-fatigue and or aid in sleeping, depending on how they are prepared and administered. Significance: This study provides experimental evidence and theoretical basis for the development of Ganoderma lucidum recipes that are specifically designed to help with anti-fatigue and sleep.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the therapeutic effect of theabrownin extracted from Qingzhuan tea (QTB) on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatosis liver disease (MASLD) is related to the regulation of intestinal microbiota and its metabolite short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Mice were divided into four groups and received normal diet (ND), high-fat diet (HFD) and HFD+QTB (180, 360 mg/kg) for 8 weeks. The results showed that QTB significantly reduced the body weight of HFD mice, ameliorated liver lipid and dyslipidemia, and increased the level of intestinal SCFAs in HFD mice. The results of 16 S rRNA showed that the relative abundance of Bacteroides, Blautia and Lachnoclostridium and their main metabolites acetate and propionate were significantly increased after QTB intervention. The relative abundance of Colidextribacter, Faecalibaculum and Lactobacillus was significantly reduced. QTB can also significantly up-regulate the expression of ATGL, PPARα, FFAR2 and FFAR3, and inhibit the expression of LXRα, SREBP-1c, FAS and HMGCR genes. This makes it possible to act as a prebiotic to prevent MASLD.

As a wide band-gap p-type semiconductor, α-MnSe has been expected to make up for the scarcity of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor materials, which is crucial for the construction of multifunctional and miniaturized p-n junctions. Herein, we report the synthesis of single crystalline α-MnSe with its domain size, thickness and coverage controlled by hydrogen modulated CVD. The back-gate FET device was fabricated to study the electrical properties of α-MnSe. Moreover, the α-MnSe-based photodetector exhibits a broadband photo-response ranging from 532 nm to 980 nm with response times as low as ∼ 20 ms, comparable to most 2D materials.

This study investigated the influence of adding different titanium contents (0, 3, 6 at. %) and controlling nanoscale L12-type Ni3Ti precipitates through hot-forge and heat treatment on the mechanical and corrosion behavior of FeCoNi medium-entropy alloys. It was found that, when the Ti atom is in a solid solution state, the degree of lattice distortion increases, and the corrosion resistance decreased with increasing Ti content. Whether in the solid solution state or the precipitate state, increasing the Ti content effectively enhanced the strength of FeCoNi alloy. The strengthening effect was particularly prominent in the precipitate state compared to the solid solution state. The experimental results provided valuable references for the design and preparation of other high-strength, tough, and corrosion-resistant multi-principal element alloys.

People are an organic unity. Every organ of our body doesn't exist alone. They are a part of our body and have important connections with other tissues or organs. The gut-lung axis is a typical example. Here, we reviewed the current research progress of the gut-lung axis. The main cross-talk between the intestine and lungs was sorted out, i.e. the specific interaction content contained in the gut-lung axis. We determine a relatively clear concept for the gut-lung axis, that is, the gut-lung axis is a cross-talk that the gut and lungs interact with each other through microorganisms and the immune system to achieve bidirectional regulation. The gut and lungs communicate with each other mainly through the immune system and symbiotic microbes, and these two pathways influence each other. The portal vein system and mesenteric lymphatics are the primary communication channels between the intestine and lungs. We also summarized the effects of pneumonia, including Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP), on intestinal microbes and immune function through the gut-lung axis, and discussed the mechanism of this effect. Finally, we explored the value of intestinal microbes and the gut-lung axis in the treatment of pneumonia through the effect of intestinal microbes on pneumonia.

Summary: Climate change and human activities have intensified variations of water table depth (WTD) in wetlands around the world, which may strongly affect greenhouse gas emissions. Here, we analyzed how emissions of CO2, CH4, and N2O from the Zoige wetland on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) vary with the WTD. Our data indicate that the wetland shows net positive global warming potential (11.72 tCO2-e ha−1 yr−1), and its emissions of greenhouse gases are driven primarily by WTD. Our analysis suggests that an optimal WTD exists, which at our study site was approximately 18 cm, for mitigating increases in global warming potential from the wetland. Our study provides insights into how climate change and human acitivies affect greenhouse gas emissions from alpine wetlands, and they suggest that water table management may be effective at mitigating future increases in emissions.

Traditional Chinese medicine volatile oil has a long history and possesses extensive pharmacological activity. However, volatile oils have characteristics such as strong volatility, poor water solubility, low bioavailability, and poor targeting, which limit their application. The use of volatile oil nano drug delivery systems can effectively improve the drawbacks of volatile oils, enhance their bioavailability and chemical stability, and reduce their volatility and toxicity. This article first introduces the limitations of the components of traditional Chinese medicine volatile oils, discusses the main classifications and latest developments of volatile oil nano formulations, and briefly describes the preparation methods of traditional Chinese medicine volatile oil nano formulations. Secondly, the limitations of nano formulation technology are discussed, along with future challenges and prospects. A deeper understanding of the role of nanotechnology in traditional Chinese medicine volatile oils will contribute to the modernization of volatile oils and broaden their application value.

Objective: To establish a headspace gas chromatography method to determine the residual solvents of methanol, acetone, dichloromethane, and toluene in cefepime. Methods: Headspace gas chromatography using a DB-624 capillary column and temperature program was performed to detect four residual solvents in cefepime. The temperature program consisted of an initial temperature of 60 ℃maintained for 4 min, a temperature increased to 120 ℃ at 20 ℃·min−1 maintained for 3 min, and then a temperature increased to 200 ℃ at 40 ℃·min−1 maintained for 3 min. Results: Linear relationships were found between the peak areas and mass concentrations of the four solvents mentioned above within the defined ranges. The limits of detection for methanol, acetone, dichloromethane and toluene were 0.50, 0.15, 0.10 and 0.08 mg·L-1, respectively. The recoveries obtained using the standard addition method ranged from 98.41 % to 100.94 %. Conclusion: This method demonstrated high sensitivity and good reproducibility, and it can be used to effectively control the residual amounts of methanol, acetone, dichloromethane, and toluene, to further improve the quality of cefepime.

Adequate vascularization is crucial for the repair of bone defects. Platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) has been shown to promote H-type vessel formation, a specialized blood vessel, strongly positive for CD31 and endomucin, coupling angiogenesis and osteogenesis. However, the lack of a controllable growth factor delivery limits its clinical application, causing certain complications associated with PDGF-BB administration. This study developed an injectable heparin-conjugated hydrogel (GHH) for controlled delivery to facilitate the effective binding of PDGF-BB and rapid vascularized bone regeneration. Herein, in vitro experiments involving the controlled release of PDGF-BB showed that the PDGF-BB-loaded GHH (GHHP) hydrogel demonstrated excellent cytocompatibility and osteogenic properties. The subcutaneous implantation model in rats revealed that the GHHP hydrogel has the potential to induce the formation of H-type blood vessels in vivo. Furthermore, the healing of distal femoral condyle defects in rat models in vivo demonstrated that GHHP could substantially promote H-type angiogenesis and effectively repair bone defects. Our injectable heparin-conjugated sustained-release PDGF-BB hydrogel has excellent angiogenic and osteogenic properties, thus providing a novel and promising solution for bone defect repair.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, life-threatening inflammatory disease of gastrointestinal tissue characterized by inflammation of the gut. Recent studies have shown that gut microbiota is involved in the pathophysiology of IBD. However, it is unknown whether direct inhibition of NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome regulates IBD and alters gut microbiota. Methods: Here, the NLRP3 expression was evaluated in the colon of IBD subjects. Then, we investigated the effects of NLRP3 inhibition by MCC950 on the gut microbiota and IBD-like symptoms induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). Results: Firstly, NLRP3 and IL-1β levels were increased in patients with IBD as compared with healthy individuals. Then, the animal experiment showed that NLRP3 inhibition by MCC950 significantly attenuated IBD-like symptoms such as diarrhea and colonic inflammation in DSS-induced mice. In addition, NLRP3 inhibition inhibited NLRP3/ASC/caspase-1/IL-1β signaling pathway in the colon, which was over-activated by DSS. Furthermore, MCC950 increased the abundance of phylum Firmicutes, decreased the abundance of phylum Bacteroidetes, and increased the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, indicating that the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome could regulate the abundance of intestinal flora. According to correlation analysis, NLRP3 might produce its functional role in the regulation of oxidation indicators by changing the gut microbiota composition, especially the phylum Bacteroidota, genus Lactobacillus and species Lactobacillus reuteri. Conclusions: This study suggests that NLRP3 inflammasome inhibition attenuates IBD-like symptoms by regulating gut microbiota, and provides a basis for the clinical application of NLRP3 as a target for the treatment of IBD.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is a pressing clinical issue that impedes wound healing. Pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages is required to clear bacteria and recruit various cell types during the initial phase of wound healing, but timing of this process is crucial. Herein, a microenvironment-responsive nanofibrous dressing capable of timely macrophage phenotype transition in vivo is constructed by coating copper ions (Cu2+)-polydopamine (PDA) networks on poly (ε-caprolactone) fiber (PCL-fiber) membrane. During the initial post-implantation period, the nanofibrous dressing show pH-sensitive Cu2+ release in the acidic infection microenvironment. The release Cu2+ have a direct killing effect on MRSA, and promote the proinflammatory M1 phenotype of macrophages to enhance the antibacterial macrophage response. Later, PDA to become a reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger when in microenvironments with elevated ROS levels, which conferred the dressing with an immunomodulatory activity that convert M1 macrophages into M2 macrophages. In vivo examination in an MRSA infected full-thickness skin wounds of rat model demonstrates that this dressing significantly facilitated infection eradication and wound healing through modulating local inflammatory phenotype. Overall, this study offers a simple and effective approach for timely manipulation of inflammation progression to promote infected wound healing.

Large herbivores are particularly susceptible to changes in quantity and quality of forage resources, in turn constraining populations of large and threatened carnivores. Key prey species for Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) and leopards (P. pardus orientalis), Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) have a spatial distribution which is greatly influenced by habitat quality across topographic regions. In this study, we used 138 camera-trap stations to record the abundance and distribution of Siberian roe deer in the mountains (n = 88) and valleys (n = 50) of the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, and we examined the impact of overstory structure and understory food resources on the relative abundance index (RAI) of the deer. We use generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) with negative binomial distributions, with the response variable of RAI of either of deer on the mountain or in the valley. We included canopy cover (CC), tree richness (TR) and basal area (BA) from overstory structure and mass of shrub layer (SM), mass of grasses and sedges (GM), forbs mass (FoM), ferns mass (FeM) and understory mass (UM) from understory food as fixed effects. We found that RAI of roe deer was significantly higher for the mountain than the valley. For the mountain, BA, TR and FoM were found to have a significant positive effect on roe deer, while CC showed a negative effect. In the valley, BA had a significant positive effect on roe deer, while SM showed a negative effect. Roe deer appeared to trade-off overstory structure with understory food resources, especially BA and FoM, which may lead them to prefer mountains over valleys in the national park. These findings will assist in understanding the distribution of roe deer populations in Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, and may suggest more effective conservation and management strategies for the forest ecosystems of Northeast China.

Hydrogen–oxygen vehicle fuel cells have high research and development prospect because of their advantages of environmental protection, pollution-free and high energy conversion efficiency. Air compressor is an important part of vehicle fuel cell system. Dry twin screw compressors have been applied very well in bus fuel cell system. Aiming at the characteristics of low pressure ratio and large flow rate of fuel cell air compressors, a kind of 3–5 twin screw air compressor profile was designed, and the design method was given.

Large-area and uniform two-dimensional (2D) non-layered α-MnSe was successfully synthesized via the molecular sieve modified chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The molecular sieve serves both as a filter and a container to controllable release the Mn precursor in a stable and much lower concentration, leading to the uniform growth of 2D α-MnSe flakes. The thickness, crystalline quality and uniformity of the as-grown α-MnSe are further characterized. Our study validated the positive role of molecular sieve in the controllable growth of 2D α-MnSe, which is believed to be applicable to other non-layered transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) and will be beneficial for their further applications in electronics, optoelectronics and spintronics.

Proteins that are pathogenesis-related 1 (PR-1) can accumulate to high levels when plants employ defenses, being major participants in processes critical for stress responses as well as development of many species. Yet we still lack information concerning PR-1 family members in Qingke plants (Hordeum vulgare L. var. nudum). In this work, we distinguished 20 PR-1s from the Qingke genome whose encoded proteins often featured at the N-terminus a signal peptide; all 20 PR-1s were predicted to localize either periplasmically or extracellularly. The CAP domain was confirmed as being highly conserved in all these PR-1s. Phylogeny-based inference revealed that PR-1 proteins clustered into four major clades, with the majority of Qingke PR-1s distributed in clade I (17 out 20), and the other 3 distributed in clade II. Gene structure analysis showed that 16 PR-1s did not contain any introns, whereas the other four had 1–4 introns. We identified a variety of motifs that are cis-acting in the promoter regions of PR-1s; these included those potentially involved in Qingke's light response, hormonal and stress responses, circadian control and regulation of development and growth, in addition to sites where transcription factors bind to. Expression analysis uncovered several members of PR-1 genes that were strongly and rapidly induced by powdery mildew infection, phytohormones, and cold stimulus. Altogether, our study's findings enhance what is known about genetic features of PR-1 family members in H. vulgare plants, especially Qingke, and could thereby facilitate further exploration aiming to elucidate the functioning of these proteins.

Vegetation coverage has changed substantially in the Yellow River Basin in recent decades, which may have influenced the interaction between midstream and upstream hydrological processes. On the basis of trend analysis and grey correlation analysis, we used structural equation modeling to explore relationships between hydrology and vegetation, and to clarify how these relationships affect the hydrological interconnections between the upper and mid-lower reaches of the Yellow River Basin. During the observation period, the normalized difference vegetation index showed an increasing trend. The area of grassland and cropland decreased, while the area of shrubland and forest increased. Precipitation, evapotranspiration and total water consumption increased. Precipitation, total water consumption, and vegetation dynamics exerted stronger influence than temperature on upstream export runoff. Upstream export runoff influenced midstream runoff to an even greater extent than the local vegetation and meteorological conditions. Our results suggest that upstream vegetation dynamics should be carefully considered when exploring the ecohydrology of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River Basin. These findings may provide a theoretical basis for implementation of ecological restoration projects in the upper parts of the Yellow River Basin.

Investigating the dynamics and distribution of soil phosphorus (P) fractions can provide a basis for enhancing P utilization by crops. Four treatments from a 29-year long-term experiment in black soil with maize cropping were involved in this study: no fertilizer (CK), inorganic nitrogen and potassium (NK), inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK), and NPK plus manure (NPKM). We analyzed soil P fractions in different soil layers using a modified Hedley sequential method. The long-term NPKM treatment significantly increased total P by 0.6–1.6 times in the different soil layers. The Olsen-P concentration far exceeded the environmental threshold for soil Olsen-P (50.6 mg kg−1) in the NPKM treatment in the 0–60 cm soil profile. Moreover, the concentrations and proportion of labile and partially labile inorganic P (Pi) fractions (i.e., NaHCO3-extracted Pi, NaOH-extracted Pi, and dilute HCl-extracted Pi) to the sum of all P fractions (Pt) in the 0–60 cm soil profile were higher in the NPKM treatment than in the NPK treatment, indicating that manure could promote the transformation of non-labile into more labile forms of P in soil, possibly by manure reducing P fixation by soil particles. Soil organic matter, Mehlich-3 extractable iron (Fe), and organic-bound aluminum were increased by fertilization, and were the main factors influencing the differences in the P fractions in the 0–20 cm soil layer. Soil mineral components, i.e., free Fe oxide and CaCO3, were the main factors influencing the P fractions in the subsoil. The soil P transformation process varied with soil layer and fertilization. Application of manure fertilizer can increase the labile (Olsen) P concentrations of the various soil layers, and thus should reduce the mineral P fertilizer requirement for crop growth and reduce potential environmental damage.

As a class of non-layered compounds, ultrathin III-V semiconductors possess excellent physical and chemical properties, are promising candidates for optoelectronic and thermoelectric applications. Due to the strong chemical bonds both in plane and out of plane, the controllable growth of two-dimensional (2D) III-V semiconductors is quite challenging. In this study, we report the successful synthesis of 2D GaN crystals by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on liquid Ga. The nitrogen source flow is found to be a key factor that governs the transformation of GaN growth from 2D layered mode to three-dimensional (3D) island mode. This study provides further understanding on the growth of non-layered 2D III-nitride materials.

Abandoned houses (AH) present an utmost challenge confronting the urban environment in contemporary U.S. shrinking cities. Data accessibility is a major hurdle that prevents the acquisition of large-scale AH information at the individual property level. To this end, the latest revolution of open-access remote sensing platforms has witnessed a plethora of multi-source, multi-perspective fine-spatial-resolution data for urban environments, among which very-high-resolution (VHR) top-down view remote sensing images and horizontal-perspective Google Street View (GSV) images are prominent exemplifiers. In this study, we aim to map individual-level abandoned houses across cities by developing a method that can effectively leverage VHR remote sensing and GSV images. The proposed method is composed of four steps. First, we explored the feasibility of the three most relevant and complementary remote sensing data for individual-level AH detection, i.e., daytime VHR images, nighttime light VHR images, and GSV images. Second, we extracted discriminative features that are indicative of housing abandonment conditions from the three disparate data sources. Third, we applied decision-level fusion with Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST) to better leverage the prior knowledge about data effectiveness. In the last step, a geographical random forests (GRF) model was first implemented to improve the predictions of where houses were occluded on GSV images. We mapped individual AH in two typical U.S. shrinking cities, Buffalo, NY, and Cleveland, OH, which allowed us to further explore the individual-property-level spatial characteristics of AH. Results revealed that the proposed DST fusion and GRF prediction consistently achieved promising performance across the two cities. Given the merits of incorporating open-access and multi-perspective data, our proposed method has the potential to be generalized to understanding regional and national-scale urban environments tackling housing abandonment challenges.

Back-gated WSe2 field effect transistor (FET) with amorphous BN (a-BN) capping layer was fabricated by a direct chemical vapor deposition (CVD) assemble technique, and the electrical performance was investigated. The field effect mobility and the on/off current ratio of the a-BN capped WSe2 FET both improved by one order of magnitude due to the clean and conformal contact between the BN and WSe2 interface that further reduced the extrinsic scattering. This technique could be further applied for other 2D material based devices.

Spin injection, spin accumulation and spin detection have been investigated in few-layer graphene lateral spin valves at room temperature. Compared to the zero value of spin accumulation signal in Co/Graphene/Co lateral spin valve even after thermal treatment, clear spin accumulation signals were observed in Co/MgO/Graphene/MgO/Co lateral spin valve after 270 °C thermal annealing. Our finding provides a robust way to achieve the spin injection in graphene lateral spin valves.

Graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) heterostructures have attracted a lot of research interests due to their superior electronic properties in field effect transistor devices and the novel physical properties such as fractional fractal quantum hall effect and massive Dirac fermions. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is the most common method to synthesize h-BN and graphene, however, the directly growth of graphene/h-BN heterostructures remains challenging. Here we report the crucial impact of hydrogen on the nucleation density, growth rate and etching rate in the h-BN CVD growth. It is found that the nucleation density increases monotonically, whereas the growth rate and etching rate first increases and then decreases with the increasing hydrogen partial pressure. Benefitting from the understanding of the crucial role of hydrogen, we successfully grow the graphene/h-BN vertical heterostructures by low pressure CVD in one-pot through the modulation of hydrogen partial pressure. The field effect transistor (FET) fabricated using graphene/h-BN heterostructure shows better performance with higher carrier mobility and lower level of doping than the one without h-BN. Our direct synthesis approach paves a new pathway for large-scale production of graphene/h-BN heterostructures and could be applied for the synthesis of other van der Waals heterostructures.

Objectives: The impact of tuberculosis (TB) history on the risk of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is not yet fully understood. We aimed to identify the impact of different TB history at the onset of future MDR-TB. Methods: A large, retrospective, population-based cohort study was performed between 2005 and 2019. A multivariable Cox model was used to evaluate independent risk factors for MDR-TB for individuals with different previous TB history (PTBH), such as newly diagnosed TB history (NDTH) and re-treated TB history (RTH). Results: Overall, 12 172 individuals with PTBH were included in this study. The main impacts of different PTBH at the onset of future MDR-TB were as follows: (a) low family income, high-risk occupation, TB patients with severe infection, extended or shortened treatment course, 2H3R3Z3E3/4H3R3 and frequency of sputum culture were significantly linked to incident MDR-TB only in individuals with NDTH (P < 0.05); (b) passive mode of TB case finding, individualised treatment regimens, 3HRZES/6HRE, duration of pulmonary cavities, excellent frequency of chest X-ray examination and duration of negative sputum smear were significantly associated with incident MDR-TB only in individuals with RTH (P < 0.05); (c) age

Copper oxide has aroused great concern in energy storage fields due to its properties of high theoretical capacitance, low cost and mild toxicity. However, its wide application still remains challenges owing to its poor electrical conductivity and unstable cycling life. Binder-free foam electrodes possess abundant porous structures and high specific surface area, which could get good contact with electrolyte. Herein, we demonstrate Ag nanoparticles decorated CuxO nanowires grown spontaneously on copper foam (CF) electrode for asymmetric supercapacitor. The skeleton structure of CF provides large amounts of active sites for the growth of CuxO nanowires. Moreover, Ag nanoparticles further decrease the internal resistance and enhance the electrochemical performance. Ag/CuxO/CF-40 electrode presents a high area specific capacitance of 1192 mF cm−2 at 2 mA cm−2 and the influence of surface capacitance-dominated process and diffusion-controlled process are discussed in detail. Besides, the energy density of the as-prepared asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) reaches 46.32 μWh cm−2 at a power density of 3.00 mW cm−2. A 2V LED is lighted successfully by two ASC in series. This work provides a new strategy to prepare low internal resistance and binder-free flexible Ag/CuxO/CF electrode, which demonstrates a good potential application in flexible supercapacitors or other wearable electronic devices.

Cu-based component/aluminum substrate solder joint is achieved through laser soldering technology in this paper. The solder wettability on aluminum substrate and microstructure-properties of Cu-based component/aluminum substrate laser soldering joint are studied. The results show that the presence of the high melting point Al2O3 oxide film (∼18.45 nm thickness) isolates the contact between the molten Sn-based solder and the aluminum substrate, which results in the poor wetting properties of aluminum substrate. The surface modification of aluminum substrate can significantly improve wettability (110°→14°). Anisotropic Sn dendrites appear in the brazing area of laser soldering joints, and Ag3Sn is precipitated in the β-Sn matrix. The (Cu, Ni)6Sn5 IMC is formed near the Ni layer side. Due to the extremely fast cooling rate, the IMC thickness is less than 5 μm, and a continuous (Cu, Ni)6Sn5 region with a thickness of less than 1 μm appears at the interface near the Ni layer side. The average maximum linear load of the laser soldering joints is 95.2 N/mm. The laser soldering joint fracture occurs along the brittle (Cu, Ni)6Sn5 IMC formed at the Ni layer interface, and the fracture mode is mainly ductile fracture.

It is difficult to detect the inner layer of the bimetallic tube and to describe its full-cross-section deformation, which negatively affects its verification and utility. To tackle this issue, a novel theory is proposed for fitting the full-cross-section deformation characterization of Cu/Al bimetallic tubes under Rotary-Draw-Bending. The cross-section profiles on the bending outside are fitted by the physics-driven B-spline curves. The geometric characteristics and the bending principles are set as the physics information and drive the design of the control vertices of the fitting B-curves. The interlaminar shape inheritance of the bimetallic tube is implemented by the same position angle of the corresponding control vertices. The cross-section profiles on the bending inside are fitted by the regular curves considering the elongation percentage. The comparison between the theoretical profiles and the experimental profiles shows remarkable agreement. The average circumferential errors of the theoretical profiles are within 1.82%, far smaller than the errors of the traditional ovalization profiles. Additionally, the representative parameters of full-cross-section deformation are differently affected by the wall-thickness. The wall-thinning of the outer layer and inner layer usually shows an opposite tendency when the wall-thickness varies.

With the trends towards autonomous shipping, advanced ship motion control methods have received increased attention in recent years. The validity of ship models is crucial in designing motion controllers and directly affects their performances. However, accurate models that could reflect true ship dynamics are highly nonlinear, complex and complicated to identify, especially in situations when the experimental conditions are limited. This paper proposes a data-driven predictive control method for path-following of under-actuated cargo ships with unknown dynamics, which makes use of data gathered during operation to improve the model and the path-following performance. Based on the ship navigation data set, the relations between the heading angle and the rudder angle of the ship are fitted with seven typical regression algorithms, which acts as the prediction model in the path-following controller. Simulation study is carried out to choose the most suitable regression algorithm, among which elastic net regression is selected. The Antenna Mutation Beetle Swarm Predictive (AMBS-P) algorithm is introduced to find the optimal weights in the model identification process. A Line-of-Sight (LOS) algorithm is used as the guidance law to transform reference way-points into reference heading angles, and the path-following controller is designed also based on and the AMBS-P algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed data-driven control method performs well in the path-following task without having prior knowledge regarding the hydrodynamic coefficients and ship parameters.

Acute portomesenteric vein thrombosis is potentially lethal. In the present paper, a cirrhotic patient with a previous history of esophageal variceal bleeding presented with acute occlusive portomesenteric vein thrombosis, but achieved complete recanalization by low-molecular-weight heparin followed by rivaroxaban. Notably, no bleeding episode occurred during anticoagulation therapy. This case supported early initiation of anticoagulation in such patients.

Objectives: Understanding the nature of Mycobacterium leprae transmission is vital to implement better control strategies for leprosy elimination. The present study expands the knowledge of county-level strain diversity, distribution, and transmission patterns of leprosy in endemic provinces of China. Methods: We genetically characterized 290 clinical isolates of M. leprae from four endemic provinces using variable number tandem repeats (VNTR) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Attained genetic profiles and cluster consequences were contrasted with geographical and migration features of leprosy at county levels. Results: Considering the allelic variability of 17 VNTR loci by the discriminatory index, (GTA)9, (AT)17, (AT)15, (TA)18, (TTC)21, and (TA)10 are reported to be more highly polymorphic than other loci. The VNTR profile generated the low-density clustering pattern in the counties of Sichuan and Yunnan, whereas clusters have been observed from the isolates from Huayuan (N = 6), Yongding (N = 3), Zixing (N = 3), Chenxi (N = 2) and Zhongfang (N = 2) counties of Hunan, and Zhijin (N = 3), Anlong (N = 2), Zhenning (N = 2), and Xixiu (N = 2) counties of Guizhou. In some clusters, people’s social relations have been observed between villages. From the 290 clinical isolates, the most predominantly reported SNP was 3K (278, 95.8%), followed by SNP 1D (10, 3.4%), which are typically observed to be predominant in China. We also detected the novel SNP 3J (2, 0.8%), which has not yet been reported in China. Conclusion: The clustering pattern of M. leprae indicates the transmission of leprosy still persists at county levels, suggesting that there is a need to implement better approaches for tracing the close contacts of leprosy patients.

Objectives: Bordetella pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory agent and is the causative pathogen of pertussis, which primarily affects children. Current diagnostic techniques for this pathogen have a variety of limitations including a long culture time, low bacterial load, and lack of specificity. Methods: This article reports the development of a one-tube nested quantitative real-time PCR assay using the locked nucleic acid (LNA) technique (LNA-OTN-q-PCR), targeting the BP485 gene and using a simple inexpensive extraction method. A total of 130 clinical samples from patients with clinically suspected pertussis, collected from the Children’s Hospital of Hebei, China, were tested by LNA-OTN-q-PCR assay. RT-PCR and two-step semi-nested PCR assays were performed in parallel for comparison. Results: Only strains of B. pertussis were identified as positive, whereas all of the remaining strains were appropriately identified as negative by the LNA-OTN-q-PCR assay. A single copy per reaction can be detected by the LNA-OTN-q-PCR assay. Additionally, the sensitivity of this method was 100 times that of the RT-PCR assay (100 copies per reaction). Sixty-three of the 130 clinical samples were detected positive by LNA-OTN-q-PCR assay; in contrast, RT-PCR was able to detect only 41 positive samples. Following this, all 63 samples were positively identified by two-step semi-nested PCR. Compared with the two-step semi-nested PCR assay, both the specificity and sensitivity of the LNA-OTN-q-PCR assay using purified DNA and crude extract were 100%. Conclusions: This assay was able to detect B. pertussis infection with high sensitivity and specificity. This test shows great potential as a promising technique to detect B. pertussis in both clinical laboratories and public health settings. This is the first study to inverse leaf area index (LAI) with photon counting LiDAR (i.e., Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2/Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System, ICESat-2/ATLAS). A new framework composed of three major steps was applied: noise removal algorithm, photon classification algorithm, and the LAI estimation model. To evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of ICESat-2 derived LAI, the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) LAI product at the spatial resolution of 500-m over two sites (Amazon rainforest and Daxing’an mountains forests) were selected for comparison purpose. The results show satisfactory agreements (Amazon: R=0.693, RMSE=2.545; Daxing’an: R=0.626, RMSE=1.893; Two sites together: R=0.667, RMSE=2.433) between MODIS LAI and ICESat-2 derived LAI. Moreover, we also selected the LAI derived from Sentinel-2 to further validate the ICESat-2 derived LAI, and got better results than MODIS LAI (Amazon: R=0.752, RMSE=2.329; Daxing’an: R=0.704, RMSE=1.724). Our study found that: (1) The new applied framework can effectively inverse LAI with ICESat-2. (2) The ICESat-2 derived LAI are reliable. (3) ICESat-2 exists many advantages over MODIS in terms of LAI estimation, for example, it not only can alleviate the issue of saturation of MODIS when LAI is high, but also can mitigate the problem of poor inversion effect of MODIS where the vegetation types are diversity.

Emerging studies have indicated that the consumption of rice could be the major methylmercury (MeHg) contributor to human mercury (Hg) exposure. Nonetheless, few studies are available on Hg in rice around the world, especially in countries with heavy rice diet. In this study, total Hg (THg) and MeHg levels in rice samples (n = 172) across Nepal were first investigated. The geometric mean THg was 7.05 ± 7.71 µg/kg with a range of 0.622 µg/kg to 158 µg/kg, and the maximum THg level was up to 791% of the Chinese National Standard Limit for THg in rice (20 µg/kg). The geometric mean MeHg was 0.820 ± 0.660 µg/kg with a range of 0.189 µg/kg to 8.59 µg/kg. Overall, the mean MeHg exposure (0.00445 ± 0.00477 µg/kg bw/day) and inorganic Hg (IHg) exposure (0.0360 ± 0.0739 µg/kg bw/day) were lower than the reference dose (RfD) of 0.1 µg/kg bw/day for MeHg and the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) of 0.571 µg/kg bw/day for IHg, respectively. Concerning different groups of vulnerable populations, the highest MeHg exposure (0.126 µg/kg bw/day) and IHg exposure (1.57 µg/kg bw/day) of preschoolers (37–50 months old) were approximately 126% of the RfD for MeHg and 275% of the PTWI for IHg. When the pregnant mothers eat the rice without awareness of the Hg content in rice, the mean and highest intelligence quotients (IQs) losses were 9554 and 118659 points, respectively, and the corresponding economic costs due to IQ loss could be 15.1 million USD and 188 million USD in Nepal. The results of rice THg and MeHg levels and corresponding exposure in populations highlighted the occurrence of rice THg and MeHg pollution issues in Nepal. More efforts should be made to protect younger groups in Nepal from high rice Hg exposure. Capsule: Owing to the high rice consumption rates relative to body mass, preschoolers (37–50 months) may meet the 126% reference dose (0.1 µg/kg bw/day) for MeHg and 275% provisional tolerable weekly intake (0.571 µg/kg bw/day) for IHg exposure in Nepal.
