Resumen: En la actualización del PAPPS de 2024 presentamos aquellas actividades preventivas específicas para la salud de la mujer, exceptuando las relacionadas con la prevención del cáncer (que se incluye en otro documento) y los aspectos relacionados con la morbilidad diferencial de género, aspecto este transversal para todos los grupos de trabajo.La anticoncepción es una actividad preventiva esencial, considerando básico el derecho a decidir tanto el número de hijos como el momento de tenerlos. Debemos informar sobre los posibles métodos anticonceptivos, garantizando en el seguimiento su seguridad, eficacia y efectividad (se incluyen tablas sobre cambio de un método a otro para preservar la protección anticonceptiva). Debemos informar sobre la anticoncepción de urgencia y proponerla en caso de relación sin protección. Todo ello se hará mediante cribado oportunista, sin precisar cribado de trombofilia ni de dislipemia, y sí de hipertensión arterial.El embarazo constituye una vivencia vital importante y el médico de familia no debe permanecer ajeno. Debemos ser competentes tanto en la consulta preconcepcional (recomendando la toma de ácido fólico, evitando la exposición a riesgos laborales y medioambientales, realizando cribado de determinadas patologías y valorando la toma de fármacos no indicados durante el embarazo) como en el seguimiento de la gestación. Hagamos o no seguimiento del embarazo, no debemos desentendernos de su control aprovechando este periodo para promocionar estilos de vida saludables y participando de los procesos intercurrentes que puedan acontecer.La menopausia en general y la osteoporosis en particular ejemplifican la estrategia de medicalización de procesos vitales que se ha seguido desde diferentes instancias y organismos. En nuestra actualización abordamos la prevención y el tratamiento de aquellos síntomas secundarios a la deprivación estrogénica. Asimismo, planteamos la prevención de la osteoporosis, incluyendo la realización de densitometría en función del riesgo de fractura en los próximos 10 años, y por ello no se aconseja el cribado densitométrico en mujeres menores de 60 años. En la valoración del riesgo preconizamos la utilización de la herramienta FRAX, o mejor, la calibración del riesgo de fractura de cadera con datos de prevalencia de la Comunidad de Madrid. La indicación del tratamiento la vinculamos con la Z-score (densidad mineral ósea comparada con mujeres de su misma edad), al ser una patología asociada al envejecimiento, y no en comparación con mujeres de 20 años de la T-score. Abstract: In the 2024 PAPPS update, we present preventive activities specific to women's health, except those related to cancer prevention (which are included in another document) and aspects related to differential morbidity of gender, which is a cross-cutting element for all working groups.Contraception is an essential preventive activity; the right to decide both the number of children that they will have and when to have them is considered basic. We must inform about contraceptive methods, guaranteeing in follow-up their safety, efficacy, and effectiveness (tables are included on changing from one method to another to preserve contraceptive protection). We must inform about emergency contraception and propose it in in the event of unprotected intercourse. We will use opportunistic screening to do this, without needing to screen for thrombophilia or dyslipidaemia, but we will screen for hypertension.Pregnancy is a major life experience and general practitioners should not ignore it. We should be competent at both preconception consultation (recommend folic acid intake, avoiding exposure to occupational and environmental hazards, screen for certain pathologies, and assess the intake of medication not indicated during pregnancy) and during follow-up of pregnancy. Whether or not we follow-up the pregnancy, we should not fail to monitor it, taking advantage of this period to promote healthy lifestyles and manage potential intercurrent events.Menopause in general and osteoporosis in particular exemplify the strategy of medicalising life events that has been followed by different bodies and organisations. In our update we address the prevention and treatment of symptoms secondary to oestrogen deprivation. We also propose osteoporosis prevention, including bone density scanning according to the fracture risk in the next 10 years, therefore, bone density screening is not recommended in women under 60 years of age. We recommend the FRAX tool for assessing risk, or better, measuring hip fracture risk with prevalence data from the Community of Madrid. The indication for treatment is linked to the Z-score (bone mineral density compared with women of the same age), since this is a condition associated with aging, and not the T-score, which is used to compare women of 20 years of age.

Historically, the neogregarine Apicystis bombi was isolated almost exclusively from bumble bees (Bombus spp.) where it disrupts adipose tissue, increasing hosts’ mortality rates. Records in solitary bees are scarce worldwide. To check for its presence in carpenter bees (genus Xylocopa), campaigns were performed in Argentina capturing 154 individuals of five species (X. augusti, X. splendidula, X. atamisquensis, X. frontalis, X. nigrocincta). The presence of A. bombi was detected by molecular means in X. augusti, X. atamisquensis, and X. nigrocincta in four of the nine provinces screened. The pathogenesis and eventual impact that A. bombi may cause in individuals or populations of Xylocopa species remain unknown. The presence of A. bombi in northern Argentina would be contradictory to the hypothesis that its occurrence is the exclusive result of its introduction to South America through invasive, infected exotic bumble bees.

COVID-19 pandemic has sent millions of people to hospitals worldwide, exhausting on many occasions the capacity of healthcare systems to provide care patients required to survive. Although several epidemiological research works have contributed a variety of models and approaches to anticipate the pandemic spread, very few have tried to translate the output of these models into hospital service requirements, particularly in terms of bed occupancy, a key question for hospital managers. This paper proposes a tool for predicting the current and future occupancy associated with COVID-19 patients of a hospital to help managers make informed decisions to maximize the availability of hospitalization and intensive care unit (ICU) beds and ensure adequate access to services for confirmed COVID-19 patients. The proposed tool uses a discrete event simulation approach that uses archetypes (i.e., empirical models of trajectories) extracted from empirical analysis of actual patient trajectories. Archetypes can be fitted to trajectories observed in different regions or to the particularities of current and forthcoming variants using a rather small amount of data. Numerical experiments on realistic instances demonstrate the accuracy of the tool’s predictions and illustrate how it can support managers in their daily decisions concerning the system’s capacity and ensure patients the access the resources they require.

Summary: Background: While the adverse effects of short-term ambient ozone exposure on lung function are well-documented, the impact of long-term exposure remains poorly understood, especially in adults. Methods: We aimed to investigate the association between long-term ozone exposure and lung function decline. The 3014 participants were drawn from 17 centers across eight countries, all of which were from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS). Spirometry was conducted to measure pre-bronchodilation forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) at approximately 35, 44, and 55 years of age. We assigned annual mean values of daily maximum running 8-h average ozone concentrations to individual residential addresses. Adjustments were made for PM2.5, NO2, and greenness. To capture the ozone-related change in spirometric parameters, our linear mixed effects regression models included an interaction term between long-term ozone exposure and age. Findings: Mean ambient ozone concentrations were approximately 65 μg/m³. A one interquartile range increase of 7 μg/m³ in ozone was associated with a faster decline in FEV1 of −2.08 mL/year (95% confidence interval: −2.79, −1.36) and in FVC of −2.86 mL/year (−3.73, −1.99) mL/year over the study period. Associations were robust after adjusting for PM2.5, NO2, and greenness. The associations were more pronounced in residents of northern Europe and individuals who were older at baseline. No consistent associations were detected with the FEV1/FVC ratio. Interpretation: Long-term exposure to elevated ambient ozone concentrations was associated with a faster decline of spirometric lung function among middle-aged European adults over a 20-year period. Introduction: A frequent complication of Nissen fundoplication procedure is the migration of the wrap towards the thorax. The minimal paraesophageal dissection proposed by St. Peter has led to a significant decrease in this complication. This paper aims to report the intraoperative findings in children who presented with transthoracic wrap migration to try to establish the mechanisms that cause this condition. Methods: An IRB exempt review of children with transthoracic wrap migration. Demographic factors, radiological findings, endoscopic and intraoperative findings were analyzed. Descriptive statistics were employed as measures of relative and central frequency. Results: In 10 years, 47 patients were treated. The migration of the wrap occurred at 37.61 months on average. In 95.21% of children, the migration occurred in the anterior part of the hiatus. This was also associated with a short esophagus in 8.5% of patients. Discussion: We found that in over 90% of patients the migration occurred in the anterior part of the hiatus, which corresponds to the phrenoesophageal ligament. This reinforces the importance of keeping the ligament intact through minimal dissection, or if dissection is absolutely necessary, the phrenoesophageal ligament should be reconstructed. Introduction: Short esophagus is the inability to obtain an adequate abdominal esophageal portion during anti-reflux surgery. An alternative treatment is the Collis type esophagogastroplasty. This minimally invasive procedure has been performed on children, but it is not known what happens in the long term. The objective is to know the long-term evolution in children who underwent the minimally invasive Collis-Nissen procedure. Material and methods: An IRB exempt prospective, observational study of a case series of patients with short esophagus who underwent a laparoscopic Collis-Nissen procedure more than 5 years after surgery. All of them underwent a contrasted study and endoscopy with biopsy 5 years after the surgery. Results: The study included 8 children 5 years after having surgery. Mostly asymptomatic. The esophagogastroduodenal series showed the same caliber in the native esophagus as in the gastroplasty with adequate clearance and functional fundoplication. Endoscopy showed growth of the gastroplasty, continent cardia and an efficient fundoplication. Histopathologic study of the gastroplasty showed chronic nonspecific inflammation with pseudostratified mucin-producing columnar pseudostratified epithelium with adequate maturation. Discussion: The Collis-Nissen procedure in children using the cardia area and the proximal part of the lesser curvature is useful in the long-term control of reflux disease, preserving an adequate portion of the abdominal esophagus without peptic complications. Background: Suicide is a leading cause of death among Veterans, with rates significantly higher than the general population. To address this issue, it is crucial to develop and implement more effective treatments for Veterans with suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors, particularly those in the post-acute suicidal episode (PASE) stage. The present study aims to establish the feasibility and acceptability of a novel, recovery-oriented treatment called Continuous Identity Cognitive Therapy (CI-CT) for PASE Veterans. Methods: This 3-year open-label pilot study will include three one-arm trials and a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT). A total of 57 Veterans with a history of an acute suicidal episode within the previous year will be recruited. Primary outcome measures will include changes in personal recovery, suicidal thoughts, and behaviors. Secondary outcomes will include changes in self-identity, life satisfaction, and hopefulness. Feasibility and acceptability will be assessed through attendance and retention rates, drop-out rates, and client satisfaction. Conclusion: This study aims to develop and evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a novel recovery-oriented intervention for Veterans experiencing PASE. If the intervention is found to be feasible and acceptable, a manualized version will be finalized and a large-scale multi-site RCT will be designed to assess its clinical efficacy on a broader Veteran population. The results of this trial will aid in the development of effective treatment and provide valuable insights into the preliminary feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of this approach in reducing suicidal thoughts and behaviors and promoting recovery and rehabilitation in this population.

In 2019, the first cases of SARS-CoV-2 were detected in Wuhan, China, and by early 2020 the first cases were identified in the United States. SARS-CoV-2 infections increased in the US causing many states to implement stay-at-home orders and additional safety precautions to mitigate potential outbreaks. As policies changed throughout the pandemic and restrictions lifted, there was an increase in demand for COVID-19 testing which was costly, difficult to obtain, or had long turn-around times. Some academic institutions, including Boston University (BU), created an on-campus COVID-19 screening protocol as part of a plan for the safe return of students, faculty, and staff to campus with the option for in-person classes. At BU, we put together an automated high-throughput clinical testing laboratory with the capacity to run 45,000 individual tests weekly by Fall of 2020, with a purpose-built clinical testing laboratory, a multiplexed reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) test, robotic instrumentation, and trained staff. There were many challenges including supply chain issues for personal protective equipment and testing materials in addition to equipment that were in high demand. The BU Clinical Testing Laboratory (CTL) was operational at the start of Fall 2020 and performed over 1 million SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Background: The few studies that have examined associations between greenspace and lung function in adulthood have yielded conflicting results and none have examined whether the rate of lung function decline is affected. Objective: We explored the association between residential greenspace and change in lung function over 20 years in 5559 adults from 22 centers in 11 countries participating in the population-based, international European Community Respiratory Health Survey. Methods: Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) were measured by spirometry when participants were approximately 35 (1990–1994), 44 (1999–2003), and 55 (2010–2014) years old. Greenness was assessed as the mean Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in 500 m, 300 m, and 100 m circular buffers around the residential addresses at the time of lung function measurement. Green spaces were defined as the presence of agricultural, natural, or urban green spaces in a circular 300 m buffer. Associations of these greenspace parameters with the rate of lung function change were assessed using adjusted linear mixed effects regression models with random intercepts for subjects nested within centers. Sensitivity analyses considered air pollution exposures. Results: A 0.2-increase (average interquartile range) in NDVI in the 500 m buffer was consistently associated with a faster decline in FVC (−1.25 mL/year [95% confidence interval: −2.18 to −0.33]). These associations were especially pronounced in females and those living in areas with low PM10 levels. We found no consistent associations with FEV1 and the FEV1/FVC ratio. Residing near forests or urban green spaces was associated with a faster decline in FEV1, while agricultural land and forests were related to a greater decline in FVC. Conclusions: More residential greenspace was not associated with better lung function in middle-aged European adults. Instead, we observed slight but consistent declines in lung function parameters. The potentially detrimental association requires verification in future studies.

In the last few years, energy efficiency has become a challenge. Not only mitigating environmental impact but reducing energy waste can lead to financial advantages. Buildings play an important role in this: they are among the biggest consumers. So, finding manners to reduce energy consumption is a way to minimise energy waste, and a technique for that is creating Demand Response (DR) strategies. This paper proposes a novel way to decrease computational effort of simulating the behaviour of a building using surrogate models based on active learning. Before going straight to the problem of a building, which is complex and computationally costly, the paper proposes the approach of active learning to a smaller problem: with reduced simulations, regress the curve of voltage versus current of a thermo-resistor. Then, the paper implements a surrogate model of energy consumption of a building. The goal is to be able to learn the consumption pattern based on a limited number of simulations. The result given by the surrogate can be used to set the reference temperature, maximising the PV self-consumption, and reducing energy usage from the grid. Thanks to the surrogate, the total time spent to map all possible consumption scenarios is reduced around 7 times.

Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease and a major public health problem. Although the causal relationship between air pollution and asthma remains controversial, a large number of studies have provided increasingly consistent evidence of the involvement of air pollutants in asthma onset and exacerbations. We conducted a keyword search-based literature review using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases for studies with titles or abstracts containing predefined terms. This narrative review discusses the current evidence on the pathological effects of pollution throughout life and the mechanisms involved in the onset, development, and exacerbation of asthma, and presents current measures and interventions for pollution damage control. Further global efforts are still needed to improve air quality. Resumen: El asma es la enfermedad respiratoria crónica más común, y un importante problema de salud pública. Aunque la relación causal entre la contaminación del aire y el asma sigue siendo controvertida, una gran cantidad de estudios han proporcionado evidencia cada vez más consistente de la participación de los contaminantes del aire en el inicio y las exacerbaciones del asma. Realizamos una revisión de la literatura basada en búsqueda de palabras clave utilizando las bases de datos PubMed, Scopus y Web of Science para estudios con títulos o resúmenes que contienen términos predefinidos. Esta revisión narrativa analiza la evidencia actual sobre los efectos patológicos de la contaminación a lo largo de la vida y los mecanismos involucrados en el inicio, desarrollo y exacerbación del asma, y presenta las medidas e intervenciones actuales para el control de daños por contaminación. Todavía se necesitan más esfuerzos globales para mejorar la calidad del aire.

Resumen: Introducción: El asma es una enfermedad con elevada prevalencia, que afecta a todos los grupos de edad y genera elevados costes sociosanitarios. Estudios realizados en diversas poblaciones muestran gran variabilidad en su prevalencia, incluso en poblaciones cercanas geográficamente, con datos que sugieren una influencia relevante de factores socioeconómicos. Actualmente en población adulta de España no disponemos de datos poblacionales fiables sobre la prevalencia de esta enfermedad. Los objetivos de este estudio son estimar la prevalencia de asma en población española de 18-79 años, describir la variabilidad entre comunidades autónomas, estimar la prevalencia de infra y sobrediagnóstico, prevalencia de asma no controlada, de asma córticodependiente, conocer el consumo de recursos sanitarios, identificar los fenotipos más frecuentes y establecer un punto de partida para evaluar la tendencia temporal con estudios posteriores. Material y métodos: Se realizará un estudio transversal, bietápico, incluyendo pacientes de 50 áreas sanitarias. El estudio se desarrollará en tres fases: 1) cribado y confirmación en historia clínica, en la cual se identificarán los pacientes con diagnóstico previo correctamente establecido de asma; 2) diagnóstico de asma, evaluando a los pacientes en los cuales no está claro el diagnóstico de asma con los datos disponibles en la historia clínica; 3) caracterización del asma, analizando las características de estos pacientes e identificando los fenotipos más frecuentes. Discusión: Parece necesario y factible realizar un estudio epidemiológico del asma en España que permita identificar la prevalencia de asma, optimizar la planificación sanitaria, caracterizar los fenotipos más frecuentes de la enfermedad y evaluar los diagnósticos erróneos. Abstract: Introduction: Asthma is a disease with high prevalence, which affects all age groups and generates high health and social care costs. Studies carried out in a number of populations show great variability in its prevalence, even in geographically close populations, with data suggesting a relevant influence of socio-economic factors. At present, we do not have reliable data on the prevalence of this disease in the adult population of Spain. The objectives of this study are to estimate the prevalence of asthma in the Spanish population for those aged 18-79, to describe the variability between autonomous communities, to estimate the prevalence of under and overdiagnosis, to analyse the prevalence of uncontrolled asthma and steroid-dependent asthma, to evaluate the health care cost, to identify the most frequent phenotypes and to establish a starting point to evaluate the temporal trend with subsequent studies. Methods: A cross-sectional, two-stage study will be carried out, including patients from 50 catchment areas. The study will be carried out in 3 phases: 1) screening and confirmation in the clinical history, in which patients with a previously correctly established diagnosis of asthma will be identified; 2) diagnosis of asthma to evaluate patients without a confirmed or excluded diagnosis; 3) characterization of asthma, where the characteristics of the asthmatic patients will be analysed, identifying the most frequent phenotypes. Discussion: It seems necessary and feasible to carry out an epidemiological study of asthma in Spain to identify the prevalence of asthma, to optimize healthcare planning, to characterize the most frequent phenotypes of the disease, and to evaluate inaccurate diagnoses.

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common malignancy in women. Particular subtypes with aggressive behavior are major contributors to poor outcomes. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is difficult to treat, pro-inflammatory, and highly metastatic. We demonstrate that TNBC cells express TLR9 and are responsive to TLR9 ligands, and treatment of TNBC cells with chemotherapy increases the release of nucleic-acid-containing damage-associated molecular patterns (NA DAMPs) in cell culture. Such culture-derived and breast cancer patient-derived NA DAMPs increase TLR9 activation and TNBC cell invasion in vitro. Notably, treatment with the polyamidoamine dendrimer generation 3.0 (PAMAM-G3) behaved as a nucleic acid scavenger (NAS) and significantly mitigates such effects. In mice that develop spontaneous BC induced by polyoma middle T oncoprotein (MMTV-PyMT), treatment with PAMAM-G3 significantly reduces lung metastasis. Thus, NAS treatment mitigates cancer-induced inflammation and metastasis and represents a novel therapeutic approach for combating breast cancer.

In risk assessment we recommend the use of the frax tool or better, the calibration of the risk of hip fracture with prevalence data from our setting. Resumen: Se revisa la evidencia científica en las actividades preventivas de la atención de la mujer en relación con el seguimiento del embarazo, las actividades preventivas en la planificación y seguimiento de los métodos anticonceptivos, actividades preventivas en la menopausia, y la prevención de las fracturas osteoporóticas. Abstract: A review is presented of the scientific evidence on preventive activities in women's care in relation to pregnancy follow-up, preventive activities in the planning and follow-up of contraceptive methods, preventive activities in menopause, and the prevention of osteoporotic fractures.

In industrial control processes, certain characteristics are sometimes difficult to measure by a physical sensor due to technical and/or economic limitations. This fact is especially true in the petrochemical industry. Some of those quantities are especially crucial for operators and process safety. This is the case for the automotive diesel Flash Point Temperature (FT). Traditional methods for FT estimation are based on the study of the empirical inference between flammability properties and the denoted target magnitude. The necessary measures are taken indirectly by samples from the process and analyzing them in the laboratory, this process implies time (can take hours from collection to flash temperature measurement) and thus make it very difficult for real-time monitorization, which in fact results in security and economical losses. This study defines a procedure based on Machine Learning modules that demonstrate the power of real-time monitorization over real data from an important international refinery. As input, easily measured values provided in real-time, such as temperature, pressure, and hydraulic flow are used and a benchmark of different regressive algorithms for FT estimation is presented. The study highlights the importance of sequencing preprocessing techniques for the correct inference of values. The implementation of adaptive learning strategies achieves considerable economic benefits in the productization of this soft sensor. The validity of the method is tested in the reality of a refinery. In addition, real-world industrial data sets tend to be unstable and volatile, and the data is often affected by noise, outliers, irrelevant or unnecessary features, and missing data. This contribution demonstrates with the inclusion of a new concept, called an adaptive soft sensor, the importance of the dynamic adaptation of the conformed schemes based on Machine Learning through their combination with feature selection, dimensional reduction, and signal processing techniques. The economic benefits of applying this soft sensor in the refinery's production plant and presented as potential semi-annual savings.

Summary: The discovery of carbon dots (CDs) for environmental remediation has gained awareness because of the diverse economically viable and environmental friendly green precursors generated from biowastes and biomass compared to the toxic inorganic quantum dots and CDs prepared from chemical precursors. This review presents the recent progress in green CDs, including their synthesis methods and sensing applications for the detection of heavy metal ions such as Iron (III), Mercury (II), Copper (II), Chromium (VI), Lead (II), Arsenic (III), Cobalt (II), Aluminum (III), Silver (I), and Gold (III) which are prominent environmental pollutants. The comparison based on selectivity, sensitivity, quantum yield, detection limit, linear concentration range, and sensing mechanisms are also reported. This review also covers the performance of doped green CDs using heteroatoms, toward the detection of heavy metal ions. Apart from the future perspectives, this review provides a general guide to use such environmental friendly CDs to detect harmful pollutants.

The current study aimed to determine how attitudes towards research are related to epistemic orientation, critical thinking, and satisfaction with research courses in psychology university students. Control variables included respondents' gender, current academic degree (undergraduate or postgraduate), number of research methods courses completed, number of research projects completed, and academic score. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was used, with a non-probabilistic sample size of 137 students. Correlational findings suggest that students with high scores in critical thinking domains and empiric and rational dispositions, tend to achieve higher academic grades. Rationality and reflexive skepticism were related to the number of research projects completed by the student. While an intuitive disposition is inversely related to academic scores and the number of research courses completed. Results from a hierarchical linear regression model suggest that attitudes towards research are significantly and positively affected by students' satisfaction with research courses, empiric epistemic orientation, and critical openness. On the other hand, an intuitive epistemic orientation has significant detrimental effects on attitudes towards research. Rational epistemic orientation and skeptic reflexiveness yielded non-significant coefficients. Overall, the model containing all independent variables accounted for 47.4% of the variance in attitudinal scores; this constitutes a large effect size. Results are discussed in light of previous research and their implications for the teaching of psychology in higher education.

Background and aim: In Mexican traditional medicine, Montanoa tomentosa (Mt) has been used as a remedy for reproductive impairments and mood swings. In pre-clinical research, both the extract and some of its active metabolites have produced oxytocinergic-like effects on female reproductive organs; however, there are no detailed studies of its effects on mood swing and brain structures. The aim of this study, was to analyze the behavioral effects of acute administration of a Mt infusion on male rats, during the Open Field (OFT) and Forced Swim (FST) Tests, and their association with the activation of oxytocin (OXT) cells, indicated by Fos protein (Fos/OXT) in the paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic nuclei (SON). Experimental procedure: 52 adult male Wistar rats were assigned to two conditions; with FST (n = 8), or without (n = 5). Each integrated condition included four groups [Control, Vehicle, Fluoxetine (Flx; 10 mg/kg), and Mt (50 mg/kg), p.o.]. Results and conclusion: Mt and Flx treatment produced an anti-despair-like effect on the FST, but no significant changes in locomotor activity. Also, the Mt infusion -but not Flx-significantly increased the number of Fos/OXT cells in the PVN and SON, regardless of the condition, compared to the control and vehicle groups. These results show that Mt, but not Flx, produces an anti-despair-like effect that could be associated with the activation of OXT cells in PVN and SON. This study thus contributes to our knowledge of the pharmacological activity of Mt infusions, which could be a natural antidepressant agent with future clinical relevance. Trophic networks are the way by which energy is distributed through the ecosystem and out of it. Each ecosystem at a particular functional developmental state (FDS) has attributes that can be measured and understood through the food web. Trophic interactions can further our understanding of the FDS of coral reefs that can be associated with their geomorphological structure; however, the number of the states is presently unknown. Thus, we investigated the geomorphology of a set of the Greater Caribbean coral reefs, describing gradients of coral reef FDS. Eleven coral reefs in the Gulf of Mexico and 17 reefs in the Caribbean Sea were examined, including fringing reefs and platform reefs (submerged and emergent with and without sandy-island cay). For each coral reef, nine ecosystem developmental attributes and five topological indices were estimated from trophic models. Using non-metric multidimensional scaling and analysis of similarities, we found a gradient of maturity consisting of eight FDS. Early states correspond to fringing reefs (Punta Nizuc, Mahahual) in the Mexican Caribbean, and later states correspond to emerging platform reefs without (Palo Seco, Blanquilla) and with sandy-island cay (Cayo Cochinos, Media Luna). Using topological indices as variables and the eight FDS as nominal variables in a partial redundancy analysis, we confirmed that energy flow control increases with maturity and degree of geomorphological and physical structural complexity. On the contrary, betweenness centrality, the number of connections, and the number of predator–prey interactions decrease with functional maturity.

In the present work a recyclable and reprocessable vitrimer suitable for pultrusion process has been formulated and a pultruded profile reshaped by thermoforming has been manufactured therefrom. A DGEBA epoxy resin with medium range viscosity and a bis(a-aminophenyl disulfide) as dynamic crosslinker were used for the synthesis of the vitrimer. The thermal stability was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and curing behaviour and curing kinetics were studied by means of dynamic scanning calorimeter (DSC) and rheology measurements. Mechanical properties of the dynamic resins and its counterpart epoxy resin and of the fabricated carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) were determined. The dynamic resin showed a fast stress relaxation at temperatures above 150 °C. Finally, as a proof of concept, mechanical recyclability and the thermoforming of the vitrimer-based pultruded profile have been validated.

The purpose of this paper was to study academics’ readiness for organisational change (ROC) towards the integration of Innovative Teaching and Learning Technologies (ITLTs) in public universities. A cross-sectional research design was used to collect data from 234 academics selected from two public universities in Tanzania. The study adopted a mixed-method approach followed up explanatory sequential design whereas data were collected using surveys and semi-structured interviews. Findings indicated that meso‑level variables hold less status of ROC compared to micro-level variables whereas integration of ITLT practices are evidenced to be relatively low. More importantly, readiness for change influenced the integration of ITLTs, thus could be recognised as an essential component for the implementation of ITLTs in higher education.

Background: The 2017 KDIGO guidelines establish a 2B grade recommendation in favor of testing Bone Mineral Density (BMD) by DXA to assess osteoporotic fracture (OPF) risk in patients with CKD G3a-G5D. Still, controversy remains because large studies evaluating it for this particular population are lacking. Aim: To establish the clinical performance of BMD measured by DXA in the evaluation of fracture risk in women with CKD. Methods: We conducted a 43 year retrospective cohort study with 218 women ≥18 years-old with CKD and BMD measurement by DXA of total hip and lumbar spine. Clinical (age, year of CKD onset, comorbidities, BMI, transplant status, treatment), and biochemical (PTH, corrected calcium, phosphate, vitamin D [25 (OH) D3], creatinine, and albumin), parameters were collected from hospital records. All osteoporotic fractures (as defined by the WHO) found in the clinical and radiologic files were registered. Results: 218 women with a median age of 60 years (40–73 IQ range) and a CKD evolution time of 12 years (7–18 IQ range) were evaluated. Forty-eight (28.23%) presented an OPF. These women were older (57 vs 69 years, p =0.0072) and had a lower BMD. CKD stage did not influence fracture incidence. In the multivariate analysis we found that for each standard deviation decrease in hip and lumbar spine T-Score, the overall fracture risk was 2.7 and 2.04 times higher, respectively. Three-dimensional (3D) data from airborne laser scanning (ALS) and, more recently, digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) have been successfully used to model forest attributes. While multi-temporal, wall-to-wall ALS data is not usually available, aerial imagery is regularly acquired in many regions. Thus, the combination of ALS and DAP data provide a sufficient temporal resolution to properly monitor forests. However, field data is needed to fit new forest attribute models for each 3D data acquisition, which is not always affordable. In this study, we examined whether transferability of growing stock volume (GSV) models may provide an improvement in the efficiency of forest inventories updating. We used two available ALS datasets acquired with different characteristics in 2009 and 2010, respectively, generated two DAP point clouds from imagery collected in 2010 and 2017, and utilized field data from two ground surveys conducted in 2009 and 2016-2017. We first analyzed the stability of point cloud derived metrics. Then, Support Vector Regression models based on the most stable metrics were fitted to assess model transferability by applying them to other datasets in four different cases: (1) ALS-ALS, (2) DAP-DAP temporal, (3) ALS-DAP and (4) ALS-DAP temporal. Some metrics were found to be enough stable in each case, so they could be used interchangeably between datasets. The application of models to other datasets resulted in unbiased predictions with relative root mean square error differences ranging from -8.27% to 14.59%. Results demonstrated that 3D-based GSV models may be transferable between point clouds of the same type as well as point clouds acquired using different technologies such as ALS and DAP, suggesting that DAP data may be used as a cost-efficient source of information for updating ALS-assisted forest inventories.

Producing gram quantities of uranium metal in a controlled manner by traditional methods is challenging due to the complex chemistry of precursor material and extreme thermal requirements. In this article, a novel approach is reported that combines modeling and an advanced experimental technique for extracting uranium from a uranium-containing compound. Using uranium nitride as an example, a computational thermodynamic approach identified a decomposition pathway to convert uranium nitride to uranium metal at temperatures exceeding 2500 K under conditions of rapid material cooling. To realize these extreme conditions, laser-induced heating, which enables fine control of process location and rapid cooling, was utilized for high-temperature modification of material. Uranium nitride was irradiated by a controlled laser under several gaseous conditions including high-vacuum, argon, and nitrogen environments, resulting in uranium metal at yields up to 96%. The complete decomposition leading to pure uranium metal occurs at the high temperature surface region, where laser-based heating induces a surface depression and molten pool of material. The observed kinetic phase behaviors in this study fundamentally differ from previous uranium decomposition studies where small uranium metal precipitates from the nitride bulk are formed at the surface of uranium nitride.

Acrylamide is a vinyl monomer that is widely used for the synthesis of polyacrylamides, the treatment of drinking water, and as an additive in cosmetics. Acrylamide is also produced during the thermal processing of carbohydrate-rich foods. Although the potential toxic effects of acrylamide have been reported, few studies have evaluated biochemical parameters in blood. The present study investigated alterations of blood chemistry, hepatic function, and blood cytometry in acrylamide-treated rats. Thirty-two male Wistar rats were assigned to four experimental groups (n = 8/group): one control group received 0.3 ml of vehicle (saline solution), and the other three groups received acrylamide (25, 50, and 75 mg/kg, i.p., for 14 days). At the end of treatment, blood samples were collected to obtain serum, which was then processed using a Vitros250 device. For blood cytometry, the samples were processed in a Sysmex analyzer. The blood chemistry results showed that urea nitrogen, urea, and creatinine were elevated in the acrylamide-treated groups. Tests of hepatic function showed that total and direct bilirubins, transaminases, and alkaline phosphatase were also elevated compared with vehicle, whereas the levels of total proteins and albumin decreased. Blood cytometry showed that the levels of erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, leukocytes, and platelets and mean cell volume decreased in the acrylamide-treated groups compared with vehicle. Overall, the present findings indicate that acrylamide causes deleterious effects on renal and hepatic physiology, producing dose-dependent alterations of blood chemistry and cytometry parameters in male Wistar rats. Summary: Tumor-derived lactic acid inhibits T and natural killer (NK) cell function and, thereby, tumor immunosurveillance. Here, we report that melanoma patients with high expression of glycolysis-related genes show a worse progression free survival upon anti-PD1 treatment. The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) diclofenac lowers lactate secretion of tumor cells and improves anti-PD1-induced T cell killing in vitro. Surprisingly, diclofenac, but not other NSAIDs, turns out to be a potent inhibitor of the lactate transporters monocarboxylate transporter 1 and 4 and diminishes lactate efflux. Notably, T cell activation, viability, and effector functions are preserved under diclofenac treatment and in a low glucose environment in vitro. Diclofenac, but not aspirin, delays tumor growth and improves the efficacy of checkpoint therapy in vivo. Moreover, genetic suppression of glycolysis in tumor cells strongly improves checkpoint therapy. These findings support the rationale for targeting glycolysis in patients with high glycolytic tumors together with checkpoint inhibitors in clinical trials. : Renner et al. demonstrate a negative correlation between glycolytic activity in tumors and response to checkpoint therapy. Genetic blockade of glycolysis or pharmacological inhibition of the main lactate transporters MCT1 and MCT4 preserves T cell function, reverses tumor acidification, and augments response to checkpoint therapy.
