For the first time, Frankincense resin (FR) has been carboxymethylated to produce CMFR - AuNPs and the conjugate was utilized for the Doxorubicin drug loading. The carboxymethylation of the carboxylic, phenolic, and hydroxyl functional groups of FR has been developed into carboxymethylated Frankincense resin (CMFR). A novel CMFR-AuNPs was synthesized using the developed CMFR as a stabilizing and reducing agent. The antibacterial, antioxidant, and in-vitro anticancer activities were investigated by using CMFR-AuNPs and CMFR - AuNPs@DOX. CMFR-AuNPs demonstrated antioxidative properties by quenching DPPH radicals effectively. CMFR-AuNPs and DOX@CMFR-AuNPs demonstrated strong antibacterial activity against K. pneumoniae, S. aureus, B. subtilis, and E. coli. The cell viability was tested for CMFR -AuNPs at various concentrations of Dox-loaded CMFR -AuNPs (CMFR-AuNPs + Dox1, CMFR-AuNPs + Dox 2, & CMFR-AuNPs + Dox 3). The highest inhibition was observed on MCF-7 and HeLa cell lines using CMFR-AuNPs + Dox 3, respectively. Various techniques such as UV, FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, EDAX and TEM were used to characterize the designed CMFR and CMFR-AuNPs. After carboxy methylation, the amorphous nature of FR changed to crystallinity, as reflected in the XRD spectra. The XRD spectrum of the CMFR- AuNPs showed FCC structure due to the involvement of hydroxyl and carboxylic functional groups of CMFR strongly bound with the AuNPs. TGA results revealed that the CMFR is thermally more stable than FR. TEM revealed that CMFR - AuNPs were well dispersed, spherical, and hexagonal with an average diameter of 7 to 10 nm, while the size of doxorubicin loaded (DOX@CMFR-AuNPs) AuNPs was 11 to 13 nm. Herein, we report for the first time a simple strategy to design a hierarchical chemically exfoliated magnesium diboride and guar gum network structure decorated with Ru nanoparticles (eMgB 2 -GG@Ru) as an electrode to evaluate its electrochemical performance for the application of supercapacitor. The eMgB 2 and functionalized eMgB 2 -GG@Ru materials were thoroughly examined using XRD, TGA, DLS, FE-SEM, STEM, AFM, XPS, and BET techniques. The combined eMgB 2 -GG@Ru electrode exhibits a network structure morphology with an increased interlayer distance of eMgB 2 nanolayers along with a uniform distribution of spherical Ru nanoparticles. The electrochemical performance of eMgB 2 -GG@Ru and its pristine materials was studied through CV, GCD, and EIS to determine their supercapacitor performance. The eMgB 2 -GG@Ru electrode demonstrates higher specific capacitance (352 F/g) than its eMgB 2 @Ru (258.9 F/g), and MgB 2 (214.5 F/g) counterparts at a current density of 0.5 A/g in a three-electrode setup using 3 M KOH electrolyte. The hierarchical eMgB 2 -GG@Ru solid-state symmetric devices maintained higher capacity retention of 89 % even after 7000 cycles, achieving a maximum energy density of 26.12 kW/kg at the power density of 450 W/kg at 0.5 A/g. Purpose: Tuberculosis, a crucial infectious disease is still a health concern globally. India is among the countries with high MDR-TB burden. Currently, sputum smear microscopy using Ziehl Neelsen stain and GeneXpert are the only diagnostic means in Mizoram. This study was done to characterize local tuberculosis strains circulating in Mizoram., Methods: Sputum was cultured using MGIT 960 and DST was performed for Streptomycin, Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Ethambutol and Pyrazinamide. GeneXpert test was done simultaneously. DNA was extracted using Trueprep AUTO v2, molbio diagnostics. Antibiotic Resistance Genes and LSP were amplified and sequenced., Results: Ser315Thr was the most common mutation in katG among MDR-TB isolates. GeneXpert probes A and D drop out upon sequencing showed L511P, H526Q and H526L mutation. The L511P and H526Q mutations were seen in new and treated cases. Discrepancy between MGIT 960 and GeneXpert were observed. LSP-PCR revealed that Indo-Oceanic, East-African Indian, Euro-American and Beijing lineages were found in Mizoram., Conclusion: This study provides mutation information on the resistant genotypes detected with GeneXpert as well as MGIT 960. It also provides information on the lineages of Mycobacterium tuberculosis circulating in the state. N‒GQDs with an average size of ca. 20-30 nm are utilized for the picomolar detection of inhibitory neurotransmitters, glycine (Gly), in pH ca. 7.0. The crystalline nature, morphology, elemental composition, and chemical state of N-GQDs are investigated by XRD, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, XPS, and FT-IR techniques. The addition of Gly (100 × 10 -9  M; 0 → 1.0 mL) steadily quenches the fluorescence intensity of N-GQD (1 × 10 -6  M) at 432 nm (λ ex 333 nm) due to inner filter effect (IFE) through the formation of ground-state complex, N-GQD•Gly. The excitation-independent N‒GQDs showed an outstanding selectivity and sensitivity towards Gly with binding constant (K a  = 8.97 × 10 -3  M -1 ) and LoD (21.04 pM; S/N = 3). Time-correlated single-photon counting experiment confirms the static quenching of N-GQD (8.77 → 8.85 ns) in the presence of Gly. The interference of other amino acids on the strong binding of the N-GQD•Gly complex in H 2 O is examined. Combinatorial Ex-OR and NOT gate logic circuits that could be useful in neuromorphic computing are developed based on the reversible fluorescence intensity changes of N-GQD upon the addition of Gly (Ф F 0.54 → 0.39). The real-time application of N-GQD was investigated using commercially available relevant milk samples. Global land-use changes and rapid infrastructure development necessitate identification and conservation of wildlife corridors. Connectivity through corridors is shaped by species' structural, ecological and behavioral constraints. In multi-use landscapes, species' interactions with humans could additionally influence connectivity. Using the tiger Panthera tigris as a case study, we make simultaneous assessments of potential connectivity, habitat use and examine their links with the species' negative interactions with humans in central India. We assessed potential connectivity across 10, 000 sq. km of the Kanha-Pench forest corridor using graph-theoretic methods. Combining indirect sign surveys and occupancy models, we examined habitat use, and evaluated its congruence with potential connectivity. Next, we estimated spatial probabilities of livestock depredation through application of multi-state occupancy models to interview-based survey data from local residents. Habitat use by tigers was negatively associated with forest fragmentation and anthropogenic disturbance. Livestock depredation was positively associated with size of settlements and areas most frequented by tigers, and negatively with anthropogenic disturbance within forests. We found high congruence between connectivity and habitat use (r = 0.80); but the strong correlation did not hold in areas with very high levels of livestock depredation levels. Our results indicate that when areas of high use by tigers are constrained by limited connectivity, there are higher chances of human-tiger conflict, and these areas may be ecological traps for the species. Interactions with humans can be crucial in mediating connectivity for large carnivores in shared habitats. Our findings present an opportunity to consolidate areas where carnivore conservation and local livelihood needs can be balanced. The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) still remains on an upsurge trend. The second wave of this disease has led to panic in many countries, including India and some parts of the world suffering from the third wave. As there are no proper treatment options or remedies available for this deadly infection, supportive care equipment's such as oxygen cylinders, ventilators and heavy use of steroids play a vital role in the management of COVID-19. In the midst of this pandemic, the COVID-19 patients are acquiring secondary infections such as mucormycosis also known as black fungus disease. Mucormycosis is a serious, but rare opportunistic fungal infection that spreads rapidly, and hence prompt diagnosis and treatment are necessary to avoid high rate of mortality and morbidity rates. Mucormycosis is caused by the inhalation of its filamentous (hyphal form) fungi especially in the patients who are immunosuppressed. Recent studies have documented alarming number of COVID-19 patients with mucormycosis infection. Most of these patients had diabetes and were administered steroids for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and were consequently more prone to mucormycosis. Hence, the present review emphasizes mucormycosis and its related conditions, its mechanism in normal and COVID-19 affected individuals, influencing factors and challenges to overcome this black mold infection. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused by the coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has already caused in excess of 1.25 million deaths worldwide, and the number is increasing. Knowledge of the host transcriptional response against this virus and how the pathways are activated or suppressed compared to other human coronaviruses (SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV) that caused outbreaks previously can help in the identification of potential drugs for the treatment of COVID-19. Hence, we used time point meta-analysis to investigate available SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV in-vitro transcriptome datasets in order to identify the significant genes and pathways that are dysregulated at each time point. The subsequent over-representation analysis (ORA) revealed that several pathways are significantly dysregulated at each time point after both SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV infection. We also performed gene set enrichment analyses of SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV with that of SARS-CoV-2 at the same time point and cell line, the results of which revealed that common pathways are activated and suppressed in all three coronaviruses. Furthermore, an analysis of an in-vivo transcriptomic dataset of COVID-19 patients showed that similar pathways are enriched to those identified in the earlier analyses. The novel Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by SARS-CoV-2, which is the causative agent of a potentially fatal disease that is of great global public health concern. The outbreak of COVID-19 is wreaking havoc worldwide due to inadequate risk assessment regarding the urgency of the situation. The COVID-19 pandemic has entered a dangerous new phase. When compared with SARS and MERS, COVID-19 has spread more rapidly, due to increased globalization and adaptation of the virus in every environment. Slowing the spread of the COVID-19 cases will significantly reduce the strain on the healthcare system of the country by limiting the number of people who are severely sick by COVID-19 and need hospital care. Hence, the recent outburst of COVID-19 highlights an urgent need for therapeutics targeting SARS-CoV-2. Here, we have discussed the structure of virus; varying symptoms among COVID-19, SARS, MERS and common flu; the probable mechanism behind the infection and its immune response. Further, the current treatment options, drugs available, ongoing trials and recent diagnostics for COVID-19 have been discussed. Amongst the natural polymers, chitin is the second most abundant, present mainly in fungi and exoskeleton of crustaceans. It forms a major part of the seafood waste as compiled and presented in this review and is de-acetylated to produce chitosan. Structure and properties of chitosan have been described. Biocompatible and biodegradable characteristics of chitosan have been well studied. In addition to the environmental sustainability associated with its use, the malleability of chitosan due to its reactive amino and hydroxyl groups, adds to its wide repertoire in usage through various modifications. Recent publications of chitosan and derivatives have been classified into its various applications in food, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical, textile, paper, agriculture and environmental applications. Two thermostable isoforms of a hexosaminidase were purified to homogeneity from the soluble extract of fresh water mussel Lamellidens corrianus, employing a variety of chromatographic techniques. Hexosaminidase A (HexA) is a heterodimer with subunit masses of ~80 and 55 kDa. Hexosaminidase B (HexB) is a homodimer with a subunit mass of 55-60 kDa. Circular dichroism spectroscopic studies indicated that both HexA and HexB contain β-sheet as the major secondary structural component with considerably lower content of α-helix. The temperature and pH optima of both the isoforms were found to be 60 °C and 4.0, respectively. The IC 50 values for HexA with N-acetyl-d-galactosamine, N-acetyl-d-glucosamine, d-galactosamine, d-glucosamine, methyl α-d-mannopyranoside and d-mannose are 3.7, 72.8, 307, 216, 244 and 128 mM, respectively, whereas the corresponding IC 50 values for HexB were estimated as 5.1, 61, 68, 190, 92 and 133 mM, respectively. Kinetic parameters K M and V max for HexA and B with p-nitrophenyl N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminide are 4 mM, 0.23 μmol·min -1 ·mL -1 and 2.86 mM, 0.29 μmol·min -1 ·mL -1 , respectively, and with p-nitrophenyl N-acetyl-β-d-galactosaminide are 4.5 mM, 0.054 μmol·min -1 ·mL -1 and 1.4 mM, 0.14 μmol·min -1 ·mL -1 , respectively. Zika virus infection causes serious birth defects, including microcephaly, when expectant mothers are infected during pregnancy. Zika outbreaks have been reported in the Pacific Islands, South America, the Caribbean, Africa and parts of South East Asia. Currently, there is no specific treatment available for Zika virus infection. Hence, the current study is focused to identify natural phytocompounds to control Zika virus from few endemic anti-viral herbs by in silico approach. Molecular interactions, Pharmacokinetic Study, Molecular dynamic simulation and annealing were carried out with the phytocompounds and checked using Lipinski filter. The interactions between the phytocompounds and Envelope protein (PDB id: 5JHM) of Zika virus was assessed with SYBYL-X 1.3. The results showed that tannic acid from Terminalia arjuna had better interaction, total score, CScore (6.792 and 5) and formed more number of Hydrogen bonds within 2.5 Å bond length, best activity in pharmacokinetic study, Molecular dynamic simulation and annealing temperature at 310 K. Myocardial fibrosis reside a common pathological feature in hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy that results in ventricular dysfunction leading to heart failure. Though several studies reported the role of fibrosis in cardiac diseases, their pathologic mechanisms leading to heart failure remains unclear. A few studies have proposed integrated analysis of microarray information and protein-protein interaction (PPI) systems to discover subnetwork markers related to diagnosis and prognosis of the disease. In addition to PPI networks, we incorporated miRNAs and transcription factors to find the putative miRNAs and transcription factors that might regulate the pathological process and progression of cardiomyopathy and their further progression to heart failure. The important submodules from network revealed the significance of Small Leucine Rich Proteoglycans (SLRPs), Extracellular matrix (ECM) related proteins and complement system in fibrosis. Sequence analysis of different SLRPs suggest that Keratocan and Fibromodulin possesses the same collagen binding site. The past five years have seen a revolution in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C, as short duration oral regimens of direct-acting antiviral drugs (DAAs), with nearly 100% cure rates for all genotypes, have replaced longer courses of ribavirin and injected interferon. Although initially very expensive, these DAAs are now becoming available in generic equivalents in countries with large numbers of chronically infected people, such as India. However, a number of obstacles may hinder the delivery of these drugs in resource-limited settings, including lack of access to diagnostic testing and the restriction of treatment to a small number of medical specialists. New approaches are therefore needed to make DAAs available to the estimated 71 million infected people, many of whom disproportionately live in low- or middle-income countries. A recent pilot study (ASCEND) of hepatitis C management in a low-income population in Washington, D.C., demonstrated that trained nurse practitioners, primary care physicians and hepatologists were equally successful in diagnosing and treating patients, indicating that such an approach might be successful in resource-limited regions of the world. Members of the Global Virus Network have received funding to carry out a similar training project in a region of India with a high prevalence of hepatitis C. Separation of the posteromedial meniscocapsular junction (PMC) is a unique injury seen in patients with disruption of the anterior cruciate ligament. PMC tears may go unrecognized despite preoperative magnetic resonance imaging and diagnostic arthroscopy of the medial compartment. Unrepaired lesions may lead to persistent laxity of the knee after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Inside-out repair techniques risk iatrogenic injury to the articular cartilage during needle passage and require dissection of the posteromedial knee for suture retrieval. Previous all-inside techniques have required specialized implants and repaired PMC lesions with direct visualization of the tear. The presented all-inside technique is an easily reproducible, cost-effective means to anatomically repair separation of the PMC. The technique provides the surgeon direct visualization and full arthroscopic access to the lesion, making repair technically easy and efficient.

Chemosterilants have long been used in sterilization programs for managing pet, stray, and wild animals but adverse effects such as trauma, incomplete responses to treatment, and complete abolition of gonadal sources of testosterone often occurs. This study describes the biosterilant effects of administering three doses of Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki HD-73 (Bt 5, 50, and 250 mg/kg; 20 rats/dose) extract in adult male Wistar albino rats on testicular parameters, function, histology, and a number of biochemical markers of overall health, free radical production, and cell proliferation. Intratesticular administration of Bt extract to rats induces testicular oxidative stress and damages and consequently, perturb spermatogenesis, degeneration of testis, reduction in testes size, and depletion of testosterone and antioxidant enzyme concentrations in a dose-dependent manner because of free radical-mediated lipid peroxidation. No morbidity or mortality adverse effects were observed in both the saline control and Bt extract-treated rats. Significant variation was noted in clinical manifestations, weight and volume of testes, and hormonal and biochemical profiles between Bt doses in comparison with the saline control. Aspermia/azoospermia (100%) resulted in Bt-treated rats without any adverse effects. Histopathological analysis showed degeneration, necrosis, vacuolation, fewer germ cells, formation of multinucleated giant cells, and a lack of elongated spermatids in atrophic seminiferous tubules in Bt extract-treated groups in the presence of low concentrations of testosterone, antioxidant enzymes, and suppression of germ cell proliferation. Dose-dependent effects were evident in most parameters that were measured. The vast array of tests that were undertaken also provides some important indicators of the physiological effects associated with the treatments that were applied. Purpose: Mini-Medical school programs have become an increasingly popular means of encouraging high-school students to consider medical professions. However, there is little research evaluating the long-term effect of these programs on influencing career choice. The purpose of our study was to determine the motivational factors for attending the Mini-Medical school programs at our institution, student satisfaction with their experience, and whether it impacts intended secondary education and career choices., Methods: An online anonymous survey was distributed to Drexel University College of Medicine Mini-Medical school program graduates to determine factors influencing student participation and program satisfaction., Results: The most influential factors in attending the program were to confirm an interest in medicine (n = 55, 95%) and parental advice (n = 29, 50%). Most maintained an interest in medicine: 57% (n = 33) pursued a pre-med degree, 55% (n = 32) planned to apply to medical school within 3 years; and 12% (n = 7) were either in medical school or matriculating in the fall of 2015. 91% (n = 53) participants noted the program's influence on choosing a pre-med undergraduate track., Conclusion: Our results suggest Mini-Medical school programs significantly impacted students' decision to pursue a medical career through fostering interest and effectively answering students' questions about the field., (Copyright © 2016 National Medical Association. Indium(III) hydroxide (In(OH)3) powders prepared via Triton X-100 mediated hydrothermal method was sintered at different temperatures (400, 500 and 600°C) to yield indium(III) oxide nanoparticles (In2O3 NPs). Thermal studies of In(OH)3 confirmed complete conversion to In2O3 around 400°C. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of sintered In2O3 nanoparticles revealed the formation of phase pure cubic In2O3. The crystallite size of In2O3 NPs was increased from 12 to 26nm upon increasing the sintering temperature from 400°C to 600°C, while the percentage crystallinity was increased up to 90% after sintering at 600°C. A red shift in the band gap energy was observed with increasing sintering temperature due to the larger size of sintered In2O3 NPs. Room temperature photoluminescence spectra of the indium oxide nanoparticles showed both near band and excitonic emission of In2O3 due to oxygen vacancies., (Copyright © 2014. Background: Bio-impedance is the measure of impedance of the body. Impedance consists of resistance and reactance. Phase angle (PA) is the tan value of the ratio of reactance versus resistance. PA depends on cell membrane integrity and on body cell mass. Earlier studies have shown a correlation between PA values and body cell mass. Body cell mass varies in chronic diseases like HIV infection, tuberculosis, cancers and chronic renal failure., Aims: The aim of this study was to compare the PA values of tuberculosis patients (TB) with that of control subjects and to compare the anthropometric values between the groups., Material and Methods: Bioimpedance analysis and PA measurements were done using Bodystat Quadscan 4000 machine on 30 tuberculosis patients and controls between the age group of 18 to 50 years., Results: The PA values were 5.09 +/- 1.11 degrees and 7.2 +/- 1.27 degrees in TB patients and control subjects respectively. PA values were positively correlated with Body mass index (BMI) in TB patients and control (r = 0.42 and 0.011, both p < 0.001). Mean difference and its 95% confidence interval between groups for PA were -2.11 (-2.72, -1.49), for weight -13.9 (-18.1, -9.7), for BMI -5.65 (-7.1, -4.2), for corrected arm muscle area (CAMA) -9.91 (-13.2, -6.6) and for impedance 152.6 (106.6, 198.6). PA, weight, BMI and CAMA were significantly higher in control subjects and impedance was lower in control groups using independent sample t test., Conclusions: PA and nutritional status were significantly low in TB patients as compared with control subjects.

Background: Invasion of CNS in MM is an extremely rare occurrence that is associated with advanced disease with poor prognosis., Patients and Methods: Our MM database identified 35 CNS MM cases presenting between January 1996 and March 2012. Descriptive analyses were performed on available data on patient characteristics, disease course, and outcomes., Results: The mean age at diagnosis was 55.4 years; 23.5% (n = 8) patients had elevated levels of beta-2-microglobulin > 5.5 mg/L; 68.6% (n = 24) of patients had elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels (≥ 2 times upper limit of normal); and 14% (n = 5) of patients had secondary plasma cell leukemia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which was performed in 34 patients, showed diffuse or localized leptomeningeal disease in 20 patients (58.8%). Monoclonal malignant plasma cells were found by CSF analysis in all 35 patients. In total, 31 patients received chemotherapy, including intrathecal chemotherapy as a part of their treatment, with a median survival of 4 months after CNS MM diagnosis., Discussion: In our experience, CNS MM is an aggressive terminal disease feature associated with high beta-2-microglobulin level, high LDH level, and secondary plasma cell leukemia. Background: Meniscal tears and associated parameniscal cysts have good outcomes after partial meniscectomy and cyst evacuation. Good outcomes have been noted after partial meniscectomy with recurrent cysts. This investigation asks if partial meniscectomy without meniscal cyst decompression is sufficient for positive patient outcome., Methods: Sixteen patients treated between 2005 and 2010 for a meniscal cyst and concomitant meniscal tear. Inclusion criteria were meniscal tear and parameniscal cyst per MRI, no prior surgery on the affected knee, and Outerbridge classification of I/II. Two patients were excluded. Fourteen patients completed the study until final follow-up. Lysholm knee scores were documented at 6 months post-operatively and at final follow-up. Re-evaluation or second surgery of the treated knee was documented., Results: Eight lateral cysts and six medial cysts were diagnosed. Eight cysts were associated with a horizontal cleavage tear, while six menisci had a complex tear with a horizontal cleavage component. The average cyst size was 1.3 cm (0.5 to 3.5) at the largest diameter. At 6 months, the average Lysholm knee score was 94.1. At mean 5 years, the average score was 89.1. Patients with medial cysts, cysts greater than 1.0 cm, horizontal cleavage tears, or without simultaneous chondroplasty scored higher in the short and medium-term than their respective counterparts., Conclusions: Excellent short and medium-term outcomes can be achieved following partial meniscectomy without cyst decompression for patients with meniscal cysts and associated meniscal tears., Level of Evidence: Level IV., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Strychnos potatorum seeds (cleaning nuts or nirmali) are extensively used by remote village tribals in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India for clarification of turbid and metal contaminated water. In the present study the ability of seed proteins to bind aqueous cadmium has been investigated. Biochemical characterization of the seed powder revealed the presence of coagulant proteins. These proteins were isolated from the soluble extracts of the seeds by ammonium sulfate fractionation. The (30-70%) fraction containing the bulk of proteins were separated by gel filtration into two peaks A and B. The (30-70%) ammonium sulfate precipitated proteins, as well as those from Peak A and B were separately immobilized to affigel-10. The Cd(II) biosorption efficiency by these proteins have been investigated. Different experiments have been conducted (i) over a range of pH (2.0-7.0), (ii) contact time (5-600 min), (iii) temperatures (4-40°C) and (iv) metal ion concentrations (80-110 mg L(-1)). The results showed that the optimum conditions for Cd(II) adsorption are almost same for the three proteins used in the study. Cd(II) removal is pH dependent and the maximum removal was at pH 5.0 in a time span of 360 min. The equilibrium data fit into Langmuir isotherm than Freundlich model. The correlation coefficient for the pseudo second order is high (~0.996-1.00) where as the correlation coefficient of the pseudo first order model is too low so the adsorption is better described by pseudo second order model., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Biosorption of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) from aqueous solution by biomass prepared from Acacia leucocephala bark, an agricultural solid waste has been investigated in the present study. All the experiments are carried out by batch mode technique. The resulting biosorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The effect of experimental parameters such as contact time, effect of pH (2-10), initial concentration of adsorbate (50-200 mg L(-1)) and amount of biosorbent dosage was evaluated. The removal was found to be pH dependent, and maximum removal was found to be at pH 5.0. The equilibrium time was found to be 3h. The biosorbent dose was increased, and the percentage removal of 2,4,6-TCP was increased, while the adsorption capacity at equilibrium q(e) (mg g(-1)) (amount of 2,4,6-TCP loaded per unit weight of adsorbent) decreased. Biosorption kinetic and isotherm studies showed the pseudo-second-order kinetics with a good correlation coefficient (R(2)=0.999), and both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were the best choices to describe the adsorption behaviors. The maximum monolayer biosorption capacity of A. leucocephala bark for 2,4,6-TCP was found to be 256.4 mg g(-1), at 30±1°C according to Langmuir model. This study demonstrated for the first time that the A. leucocephala bark could be an alternative for more costly adsorbents used for removal of 2,4,6-TCP from aqueous media., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Illicium verum is a well known spice in traditional Indian system for its therapeutic potential. The present study was aimed to evaluate the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory (BChE) activity of standardized extracts of I. verum and its oil. Present study confirmed that anethole contributed to the anticholinesterase activity of I. verum, with more specificity towards AChE. IC(50) for AChE and BChE inhibitory activity of anethole was 39.89±0.32 μg/mL and 75.35±1.47 μg/mL, whereas for the oil, 36.00±0.44 μg/mL and 70.65±0.96 μg/mL respectively. In the present work an array of novel substituted 2H-chromen-2-one (coumarin) derivatives has been subjected to photophysical analysis. Though the influence of the electron-donating groups such as amino, substituted amino, hydroxyl, alkoxy groups, etc. at position 7 of the coumarin ring system has been extensively studied, the luminescent properties of the coumarin moieties with an acetoxy substituent have not been explored. Herein it is attempted to study the variation of fluorescence behavior of substituted coumarin derivatives with change of nature and position of the substituents on the 2H-chromen-2-one skeleton. Effect of a methyl substituent at position 4 which imposes abnormal photophysical behavior to the chromenone unit has also been briefly described., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier B.V. An experimental study was conducted under continuous flow conditions to evaluate some of the factors influencing contaminant removal by electrocoagulation (EC). A bench-scale simulation of drinking water treatment was done by adding a filtration column after a rectangular EC reactor. Contaminant removal efficiency was determined for voltages ranging from 10 to 25 V and a comparative study was done with distilled water and tap water for two contaminants: nitrate and arsenic(V). Maximum removal efficiency was 84% for nitrate at 25 V and 75% for arsenic(V) at 20 V. No significant difference in contaminant removal was observed in tap water versus distilled water. Increase in initial As(V) concentration from 1 ppm to 2 ppm resulted in a 10% increase in removal efficiency. Turbidity in the EC reactor effluent was 52 NTU and had to be filtered to achieve acceptable levels of final turbidity (5 NTU) at steady-state. The flow regime in the continuous flow reactor was also evaluated in a tracer study to determine whether it is a plug flow reactor (PFR) or constantly stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and the results show that this reactor was close to an ideal CSTR, i.e., it was fairly well-mixed.

The biosorption of nickel(II) ions from aqueous solution by Acacia leucocephala bark was studied in a batch adsorption system as a function of pH, initial metal ion concentration, adsorbent dosage, contact time and temperature. The maximum Ni(II) adsorption was obtained at pH 5. Further, the biosorbents were characterized by Fourier Transformer Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The experimental data were analysed using three sorption kinetic models viz., the pseudo-first- and second-order equations and the intraparticle diffusion model. Results show that the pseudo-second-order equation provides the best correlation for the biosorption process. The equilibrium nature of Ni(II) adsorption at different temperatures of 30, 40 and 50 degrees C have been described by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The equilibrium data fit well Langmuir isotherm. The monolayer adsorption capacity of A. leucocephala bark as obtained from Langmuir isotherm at 30 degrees C was found to be 294.1mg/g. The Chi-square (chi(2)) and Sum of the square errors (SSE) tests were also carried out to find the best fit adsorption isotherm and kinetic model. Isotherms have been used to determine thermodynamic parameters of the process, viz., free energy change (DeltaG degrees), enthalpy change (DeltaH degrees), and entropy change (DeltaS degrees) were calculated indicating that this system was a spontaneous and endothermic process. Present investigation emphasized that A. leucocephala bark may be utilized as a low cost adsorbent for nickel removal.

The objective of this research was to determine the toluene removal efficiency and breakthrough time using commercially available coconut shell-based granular activated carbon in packed bed reactor. To study the effect of toluene removal and break point time of the granular activated carbon (GAC), the parameters studied were bed lengths (2, 3, and 4 cm), concentrations (5, 10, and 15 mg l(-1)) and flow rates (20, 40, and 60 ml/min). The maximum percentage removal of 90% was achieved and the maximum carbon capacity for 5 mg l(-1) of toluene, 60 ml/min flow rate and 3 cm bed length shows 607.14 mg/g. The results of dynamic adsorption in a packed bed were consistent with those of equilibrium adsorption by gravimetric method. The breakthrough time and quantity shows that GAC with appropriate surface area can be utilized for air cleaning filters. The result shows that the physisorption plays main role in toluene removal.

Smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) is usually followed expectantly without therapy. We conducted a phase 2 trial in 76 eligible patients with SMM, combining thalidomide (THAL, 200 mg/d) with monthly pamidronate. In the first 2 years, THAL dose reduction was required in 86% and drug was discontinued in 50%. Within 4 years, 63% improved, including 25% qualifying for partial response (PR); by then, 34 patients had progressed and 17 required salvage therapy. Unexpectedly, attaining PR status was associated with a shorter time to salvage therapy for disease progression (P < .001), perhaps reflecting greater drug sensitivity of more aggressive disease. Low beta-2-microglobulin levels less than 2 mg/L were independently associated with superior overall and event-free survival. Four-year survival and event-free survival estimates of 91% and 60%, respectively, together with a median postsalvage therapy survival of more than 5 years justify the conduct of a prospective randomized clinical trial to determine the clinical value of preemptive therapy in SMM. The syntheses of polyhydroxylated imino- and anhydro thio-alditol compounds related to the naturally occurring glycosidase inhibitor, salacinol, containing a phosphate group in the side chain are described. The compounds lack hydroxyl groups on the acyclic side chain and are prototypes of the exact salacinol analogue. The synthetic strategy relies on the Mitsunobu reaction of N- and S-hydroxyalkyl derivatives of 2,3,5-tri-O-benzyl-1,4-dideoxy-1,4-imino-D-arabinitol and 1,4-anhydro-2,3,5-tri-O-benzyl-1-thio-D-arabinitol with dibenzyl phosphate to yield the corresponding protected heteroalditol phosphates. Screening of these compounds against recombinant human maltase glucoamylase (MGA), a critical intestinal glucosidase involved in the processing of oligosaccharides of glucose into glucose itself, shows that they are not effective inhibitors of MGA and demonstrates the importance of the hydroxyl and/or sulfate substituents present on the side chain for effective inhibition. The attempted synthesis of the exact analogue of salacinol by opening of cyclic phosphates is also described.

The synthesis of a bicyclic sulfonium-ion analogue of a naturally occurring glycosidase inhibitor, swainsonine, in which the bridgehead nitrogen atom is replaced by a sulfonium ion, has been achieved by a multi-step synthesis starting from 1,4-anhydro-2,3-di-O-benzyl-4-thio-D-lyxitol. The synthetic strategy relies on the intramolecular displacement of a leaving group on a pendant acyclic chain by a cyclic thioether. This bicyclic sulfonium salt will serve as a candidate to test the hypothesis that a sulfonium salt carrying a permanent positive charge would be an effective glycosidase inhibitor.

The synthesis of analogues of the naturally occurring glycosidase inhibitor, salacinol, in which the D-arabinitol ring has been replaced by D-lyxitol or D-ribitol, is described. Salacinol is one of the active principles in the aqueous extracts of Salacia reticulata, which are traditionally used in India and Sri Lanka for the treatment of Type II diabetes. The synthetic strategy relies on the nucleophilic attack of 1,4-anhydro-2,3,5-tri-O-p-methoxybenzyl-4-thio-D-lyxitol or 1,4-anhydro-2,3,5-tri-O-p-methoxybenzyl-4-thio-D-ribitol at the least hindered carbon of the benzylidene-protected L-cyclic sulfate derived from L-erythritol. Screening of these compounds against recombinant human maltase glucoamylase (MGA), a critical intestinal glucosidase involved in the processing of oligosaccharides of glucose into glucose itself, shows that they are not effective inhibitors of MGA and demonstrates the importance of the d-arabinitol configuration in the heterocyclic ring for effective inhibition.

Catechins were extracted from five different tea (Camellia sinensis L.) cultivars. High-speed counter-current chromatography was found to be an efficient method for the separation of seven catechins from the catechin extracts. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to assess the purity of the catechins isolated. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin gallate (ECG) and epigallocatechin (EGC) of high purity (91-99%) were isolated in high yield after a single high-speed counter-current chromatography run. The two-phase solvent mixtures used for the separation of the catechin extracts were hexane:ethyl acetate:methanol:water (1:6:1:6 for TRI 2023); (1:7:1:7 for TRI 2025 and TRI 2043); (1:5:1:5 for TRI 3079) and (1:6.5:1:6.5 for TRI 4006). Fresh tea shoots from the tea cultivar TRI 2023 (150 g) gave 440 mg of 96% pure EGCG while TRI 2025 (235 g) gave 347 mg of 99% pure EGCG and 40 mg of 97% ECG, and TRI 3079 (225 g) gave 432 mg of 97% pure EGCG and 32 mg of 96% pure ECG. Tea cultivar TRI 4006 (160 g) gave EGCG (272 mg, 96% pure) and EGC (104 mg, 90% pure). 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts for catechin gallate (CG), EGC, ECG, EGCG and epigallocatechin 3,5-di-O-gallate (EGCDG) in CD3OD were also recorded.

We report the unusual case of a 55-year-old man with a history of hypertension and dyslipidemia who presented with acute coronary syndrome. Examination revealed that he had coronary artery ectasia and descending aortic dissection along with polycystic kidney disease.

A 41-year-old man with atrial septal defect-Eisenmenger syndrome presented with progressively worsening breathlessness. The echocardiogram, computerized tomographic scan and magnetic resonance imaging of the thorax showed dilated pulmonary arteries and large thrombi in the right and left pulmonary arteries. Contrast-enhanced computerized tomographic scan was better than magnetic resonance imaging in picking up the thrombus. The possibility of in situ thrombus formation was considered more likely than thromboembolism, as there were none of the acute symptoms expected with the embolization of such large thrombi.

Objective: Endometrial cancers often arise in a setting of estrogen stimulation unopposed by the differentiating effects of progesterone. Our laboratory and others have previously shown that progesterone receptor down-regulation or perturbation of progesterone receptor isoform A or B expression is associated with the development of poorly differentiated endometrial cancers that are not growth inhibited by progestins. The purpose of these studies was to reestablish high progesterone receptor isoform A and B gene expressions in such endometrial cancer cells and to examine the effects of progestin treatment on cell growth and metastatic potential after this transformation., Study Design: To induce high levels of expression of the progesterone receptor isoforms in KLE and Hec50 endometrial cancer cells, adenoviral vectors encoding the genes for progesterone receptor isoforms A and B were created. The characteristic ability of cancer cells to grow independently of anchorage to the surrounding solid matrix was measured by counting colony formation on soft agar for 8 to 14 days. Cell proliferation in response to a time course of progestin treatment was tested with flow cytometry., Results: After treatment with a control vector without a progesterone receptor--encoding insert, no effect of progestin treatment on cell proliferation was found; after treatment with vectors encoding progesterone receptor isoform A or B, however, progestin treatment resulted in significant inhibition of cell growth. The anchorage-independent cell growth on soft agar assay showed that by 8 to 14 days the number of cell colonies was reduced by 50% relative to control preparations in the presence of progesterone receptor isoform A plus progestin (P <.0001, both Hec50 and KLE cell lines) and by 90% in the presence of progesterone receptor isoform B plus progestin (P <.0001, both Hec50 and KLE cell lines). Progestin treatment also resulted in a time-dependent reduction in cell proliferation as measured by flow cytometry. Although transfection with both progesterone receptor isoforms A and B reduced cell proliferation according to our assays, progesterone receptor isoform B caused a much more dramatic decrease in cell growth (P =.001, Hec50 cells; P <.0001, KLE cells)., Conclusion: In poorly differentiated endometrial cancer cells that are resistant to progestin therapy, adenovirus-induced expressions of progesterone receptors A and B reestablish progestin control of endometrial cancer cell proliferation.

Oxidative decarboxylation of peracetylated welan gum (S-130) with lead tetraacetate resulted in selective cleavage of the glucuronosidic linkages. Products of the degradation were reduced with sodium borohydride, O-deacetylated, and fractionated. Polymeric and oligomeric fractions were separated and analysed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry, and were found to be monomers, dimers, and trimers of the repeating unit. Results show that this method may be used to liberate alditol-terminated multiples of the repeating unit of peracetylated glycuronans by cleavage and degradation of the uronic acid residues. The reaction sequence also confirms the recent finding that welan gum contains repeating units with randomly distributed terminal groups.

The effect of experimentally induced atherosclerosis on the synthesis and secretion of lipoproteins in the density range of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL) have been studied using primary cultures of rat hepatocytes. Rats fed atherogenic diet showed higher levels of lipids associated with serum VLDL and LDL fraction, aorta and liver when compared with animals fed normal diet. Incorporation of [3H]leucine into apo B associated with the cell layer and secreted by hepatocytes from rats fed atherogenic diet was significantly more when compared with normal hepatocytes. [14C]Acetate incorporation studies showed that the synthesis of cholesterol was lower in hepatocytes from atherogenic diet fed rats, but more of the newly synthesised cholesterol was found in the secreted VLDL; secretion of lipids, particularly triglycerides, unesterified cholesterol and cholesterol in the lipoproteins in the density range of VLDL and LDL was significantly more in these hepatocytes. The relative distribution of [3H]-radioactivity in the LDL density range was 57% in hepatocytes from atherogenic diet fed animals as compared with 28% in controls, suggesting a relatively higher production of lipoproteins in the LDL density range than VLDL by these cells. These results indicate that the hypercholesterolemia in atherogenic diet fed animals may among other factors be caused by increased synthesis of apo B by liver cells and resultant increase in the secretion of apo B containing lipoproteins.

The levels of lead in settled dust samples collected near small streets, playgrounds, gas stations and main streets in the Tripoli area have been determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The overall mean values observed were 417, 533, 553 and 797 micrograms g-1 dry wt for the above locations respectively. The overall mean concentration for main streets was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) than for other sites. The data were also compared with those reported in the literature for other cities.

A water-soluble arabinoxylan (D-xylose and L-arabinose in the molar ratio 1.0:3.4) was isolated from the mucilaginous bark of Litsea glutinosa (Lauraceae). The results of methylation analysis, partial hydrolysis, and 1H- and 13C-n.m.r. spectroscopy indicated a backbone of (1----4)-linked beta-D-xylopranosyl residues substituted at both positions 2 and 3 with side chains composed of either single or (1----3)-linked arabinofuranosyl residues. Both alpha-L- and beta-L-arabinofuranosyl residues were present. It is possible that side chains composed of two beta-L-arabinofuranosyl residues are attached mainly at O-2 of some xylosyl residues.

2 groups of Wistar male rats (6-7 weeks old) were given ethanol, 15% in drinking water, for 5 days. The level of ethanol was gradually raised to 20 and 30% resp. Both groups received ethanol between 15 and 20% or 15 and 30% continuously during 35 days. Another group was given 30% ethanol for a period of 4 days before mating started. In addition to a control group, which received no treatment, a positive control group of rats exposed to 200 R X-rays, was used. After the treatments, individual males were paired with virgin Wistar females (10-12 weeks) at weekly intervals, and 8 sequential pairings were undertaken. Females were examined for uterine contents and corpora lutea, 10-11 days after their separation from the males. The females mated with irradiated males showed a high incidence of dead implantations and reduction of live implantations. No significant differences in the number of dead, live and total implantations at pre- and/or post-implantation levels were observed among the control and the ethanolic groups, showing that ethanol did not induce any dominant lethal mutations in these Wistar male rats. In the light of studies on alcoholics and other recent data, a need to investigate, independently, the potential mutagenic effects of ethanol and alcoholic beverages is discussed.

Three independent, serially performed experiments involving acute and chronic feeding of freshly irradiated wheat (75 krad, gamma-irradiation) were carried out in Wistar rats. In the first experiment groups of 10 males were given wheat for 1 week; irradiated wheat was consumed by the animals within 24 h or irradiation. In the other two experiments feeding of males was continued for 6 (10 males per group) and 12 (13 males per group) weeks, respectively, and the irradiated wheat was fed within 7 days of irradiation. At the end of each treatment period each male was paired with 3 females for 7 days and sequentially at weekly intervals for 5 or 8 weeks. Females were killed and examined for live and dead implantations and corpora lutea. There were no differences between groups with regard to fertility nor was there any inter-group differences as regards pre- and post-implantation losses whether the rats were fed irradiated or non-irradiated wheat. This suggested that even feeding of freshly irradiated wheat does not induce any dominant lethal mutations in rats.

The structure of the capsular polysaccharide (S18A) elaborated by Streptococcus pneumoniae type 18A has been investigated by using methylation analysis and n.m.r. spectroscopy. It is concluded that the polysaccharide is composed of pentasaccharide repeating-units having the following structure. (formula; see text) In this structure, the absolute configuration of the glycerol 1-phosphate moiety has not been determined but is assumed to be D from biosynthesis considerations. The structure of S18A is, as expected, closely similar to those determined for S18F and S18C.

The structure of the extracellular polysaccharide elaborated by Pseudomonas ATCC 31554 has been investigated, methylation analyses, specific degradations, and 1H-n.m.r. spectroscopy being the main methods used. It is concluded that the polysaccharide is composed of pentasaccharide repeating-units with the structure: ----3)-beta-D-Glcp-(1----4)-beta-D-GlcpA-(1----4)-beta-D-Glcp- (1----4)-alpha-L-[Rha or Man]-(1---- 3 increases 1 alpha-L-Rha. An unusual feature is that a sugar residue in the chain may be either L-rhamnose or L-mannose. The polysaccharide also contains O-acetyl groups (approximately 5%) which have not been located.
