The dematiaceous fungus Cladosporium cladosporioides is a widely distributed saprophyte that is reported to occasionally infect the lung, skin, eye and brain of humans. This report describes a German shepherd dog with granulomatous encephalitis and nephritis due to C. cladosporioides infection. Although the fungal organisms appeared non-pigmented in haematoxylin and eosin stained sections, they were readily identified with histochemical stains. Semi-nested polymerase chain reaction using universal fungal primers amplified fungal DNA from fixed tissue that had identity to that of C. cladosporioides on sequencing.

A well-established rabbit model of enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) disease was used to examine whether vitamin E (VE) nutritional supplementation had an effect on the pathological changes induced in the bowel by EPEC. Quantitative methods were used to evaluate the influence of VE on bacterial colonization, intestinal mucosal architecture and inflammation, and intestinal epithelial proliferation and apoptosis. VE did not affect EPEC colonization and did not give significant protection against EPEC-induced changes and diarrhoea. Although VE had no effect on the EPEC-related increase of enterocyte apoptosis, it clearly contributed to an acceleration of epithelial cell proliferation in the ileal crypts. This finding may explain why ileal morphometry undertaken in this study showed that VE ameliorated somewhat the effects of EPEC on intestinal mucosal architecture. Quantitative studies on inflammatory cells in the intestinal mucosa revealed that VE nutritional supplementation resulted in an increased neutrophilic and mononuclear inflammatory cell response to EPEC infection, which did not contribute, however, to the clearance of infection.

The human "Elston and Ellis grading method" was used in dogs with mammary carcinoma to examine its relation to prognosis in this species, based on a 2-year follow-up period. Of the 85 cases examined, 27(31.8%) had well-differentiated (grade I), 28 (32.9%) had moderately differentiated (grade II) and 30 (35.3%) had poorly differentiated (grade III) carcinomas. Two years after mastectomy, significant differences in survival between cases with different tumour grade were found; thus, survival was worse in dogs with grade III carcinomas than in those with grade II (P<0.05) or grade I (P<0.001) tumours. However, in dogs with simple carcinomas which had a less favourable prognosis than that of other carcinomas (P<0.001), there was no significant difference in survival between grade II and grade III cases (P=0.878), both having a very poor prognosis. Undifferentiated (grade III) carcinoma cases had a 21-fold increased risk of death as compared with differentiated (grade I and II) carcinoma cases. An increased risk (about 10-fold) was also associated with undifferentiated simple carcinomas as compared with differentiated ones. The predictive value of histological grade was not influenced by tumour size or age of the dog at mastectomy; nodal metastasis, however, worsened the prognosis (P<0.001). Routine use of this human grading method would help the clinician to make a more accurate prognosis in the interests of post-surgical management in dogs with mammary carcinomas.

Two cases of canine papillary meningioma are reported. The first animal, an 11-year-old male Boxer, presented with vestibular ataxia and the tumour was located in the left pontomedullary region. The second animal, a 15-year-old female cross-bred Miniature Poodle, presented with dementia, truncal ataxia and hypermetria, and the tumour was located in the right semilunar ganglion of Gasser. In the first case, histopathological examination showed that the papillary pattern merged with a typical syncytial meningioma, with extensive areas of necrosis. In the second case, the multilobular tumour had lobules with a purely syncytial, fibrous or transitional histological pattern, and lobules with intermingling papillary and secretory histological patterns. Both tumours exhibited histological features of malignancy, but evidence of remote metastasis was not found., (Copyright Harcourt Publishers Ltd.)

An unusual papillary meningioma in a cat with progressive cerebellar ataxia is described. Computed tomography revealed the presence of a primary tumour. Microscopically, the tumour was seen to arise from the cerebellar pia mater, forming perivascular structures composed of a single layer of cuboidal to columnar epithelial cells. By immunolabelling, the neoplastic cells appeared positive for cytokeratin, vimentin and S-100 protein. Ultrastructural examination, together with the immunocytochemical findings, indicated the mesenchymal and epithelial nature of the tumour., (Copyright 2000 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.)

Thermal gelation properties of surimi-like material made from sheep meat were investigated. The sheep meat was ground, washed 3 times at a meat to water ratio of 1:5 and dewatered by centrifugation. The effects of washing on the composition, functional properties and colour of the mince, were studied. The washing method resulted in a sharp reduction of the fat content and an increase of the water content and pH of the mince. Lightness (L*) and yellowness (b*) of the mince were improved by washing. A significant reduction (p<0.001) of a* (redness) value and a decrease in the a*/b* ratios and saturation index value of the washed mince were recorded. Gels were prepared from washed and unwashed mince after being blended with 2% NaCl and heated at 75°C for 20 min. The washed mince produced excellent gels as measured by the fold test, elasticity modulus and the percentage recovery. The gels made of washed mince had lower expressible fluid compared to that of unwashed mince. A fibrous protein network structure was evidenced in the gel made from washed mince while observed under a transmission electron microscope.

The ultrastructure of the parasitophorous cyst, the metrocytes and merozoites of Sarcocystis tenella (S. ovicanis) was studied. The general ultrastructural features of the cyst wall and the cells of the protozoan, previously described by other authors, were confirmed. The vesicle-like invaginations of the unit membrane (primary wall) of the cyst are identical with the micropinocytic pits of other animal cells, and we believe that they contribute to the nutritional process of the cyst. The Golgi apparatus must be related to the granular endoplasmic reticulum, since the first cisterna of the curved side of the stack appeared to originate from it. The structure of the micropore was similar to that previously described by other workers, the only difference being that in this study, material was frequently observed inside the lumen. This observation led us to support the previously suggested nutritive role. In addition, crystalloid material limited by cytoplasmic membrane was often observed, but the manner of its formation and role remain unknown.
