The fragmentation reactions of neutron-rich unstable nuclei 81Ga and 82Ge at 250 MeV/nucleon have been studied in order to search the optimal mean for the production of very neutron-rich nuclei in the vicinity of 78Ni. The newly measured cross sections were compared with various calculations, showing a good agreement with EPAX3.01. The present work provides experimental insights into the two-step scheme—fragmentation following fission—as a method to produce very neutron-rich nuclei through a combination of ISOL and fragmentation of post-accelerated beams of unstable nuclei. Our results enable an evaluation of the potential of the two-step scheme in the production of very neutron-rich nuclei for the 78Ni region. The two-step scheme using fragmentation of a post-accelerated 81Ga beam could be an option to produce neutron-rich nuclei around 78Ni when the 81Ga beam intensity reaches 1.0×108 pps, compared to the one-step scheme with fission of 238U.

ABSTRACT: To facilitate sustainable dairy farming, it is essential to assess and support the mental health of dairy farm workers, which is affected more than that of workers in other industries, as indicated by the relatively few studies to date. In addition, the limited investigations on mental health in dairy workers minimize the opportunities to suggest practical approaches of improvement of their mental health. Therefore, further data acquisition and analysis is required. In the present study, we undertook quantitative surveys on 17 management factors and administered a mental health questionnaire to 81 dairy farm managers (80 male, 1 female) in Hokkaido, northern Japan. The management factors were categorized into 3 groups: production input, production output, and facility indicator; mental health was evaluated based on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Principal component analysis assigned the factors into 2 groups: intensiveness factors of dairy production systems (PC1: livestock care cost, fat- and protein-corrected milk, stocking density, medical consultation fee per unit time per animal unit, nonfamily wages, fertilizer and pesticide expenses, and net agricultural income ratio) and basic dairy management factors (PC2: net agricultural income ratio, quantity of concentrate feed, and milk quality variable). The depression symptoms of dairy farm managers were not significantly associated with PC1 and milking methods; however, they were significantly negatively associated with PC2, which integrated 3 management factors, including factors related to finances, feeding, and milk quality. According to the findings of the present study, the efforts needed for stable economic farm management, adequate feed supply, and milk quality maintenance may increase the depression levels of dairy farm managers and negatively affect their mental health. These findings could be the basis for future studies on the relationship between the mental health of farm managers and sustainable dairy farm management and production.

A search for the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of 136Xe was conducted with the liquid-xenon detector XMASS-I using 327 kg ×800.0 days of the exposure. The pulse shape discrimination based on the scintillation decay time constant which distinguishes γ-rays including the signal and β-rays was used to enhance the search sensitivity. No significant signal excess was observed from the energy spectrum fitting with precise background evaluation, and we set a lower limit of the half life of 3.7 × 1024 years at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental constraint of the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of 136Xe.

In this study, time-resolved ex situ Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were performed to monitor structural changes in a polyamide (PA) 66 gear during operation and reveal the failure mechanisms of the material. A gear test was performed using a lab-built gear tester, which is a power-absorption type. Raman and FT-IR analyses were performed on the side gear surfaces around the root of the gear (at the side of the active flank), where a bending stress is continuously loaded during operation. The results showed that the crystallinity changed, amide related bonds were broken, trans-gauche (TG) transformation occurred, and a change in the inner stress condition of the PA66 gear occurred over time. It was concluded that these changes interact with each other during operation and are related to the failure of the PA66 gear, such as the initiation of the plastic gear degradation.

E. coli is the main pathogen of UTI. It is important to be aware the local epidemiological data for an appropriate initial treatment. Resistance to antimicrobial agents has increased, especially to first-choice antibiotics in the treatment of cystitis. There are few studies on the sensivity profile of community uropathogen in our region. Objective: To characterize antimicrobials the sensitivity profile to E. coli isolated from urocultures of women treated at Basic Health Units and Emergency Care Units of Londrina- Paraná- Brazil during a period of 12 months (June 1, 2016 to June 1, 2017). Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out from June 2016 to June 2017. All urine samples collected in the Basic Health Units and Emergency Departments in the city of Londrina (Paraná State, Brazil) were sent to a Central Laboratory where the identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were performed. Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) breakpoints were used for the interpretation of susceptibility testing results. Results: 56,555 urine cultures were performed in the period, of which 8,832 were positive, of which 5,377 were women. Of these samples, 4.7% were enterobacteria producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) and 15.5% resistant to quinolones. TMP- SMX was resistant in more than 30% of the samples in all age groups. Among quinolone-resistant isolates, resistance to cephalothin, ampicillin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim was greater than 60%. Nitrofurantoin was the only antimicrobial that showed 90% of sensitivity. Conclusion: The antimicrobials sensitivity profile was similar to that reported in the literature, with TMP- SMX resistance greater than 30% in the studied samples. Nitrofurantoin maintains high sensitivity rates greater than 90%. Resistance to quinolones increases proportionally with age, as well ESBL.

A search for dark matter (DM) with mass in the sub-GeV region (0.32–1 GeV) was conducted by looking for an annual modulation signal in XMASS, a single-phase liquid xenon detector. Inelastic nuclear scattering accompanied by bremsstrahlung emission was used to search down to an electron equivalent energy of 1 keV. The data used had a live time of 2.8 years (3.5 years in calendar time), resulting in a total exposure of 2.38 ton-years. No significant modulation signal was observed and 90% confidence level upper limits of 1.6×10−33 cm2 at 0.5 GeV was set for the DM-nucleon cross section. This is the first experimental result of a search for DM mediated by the bremsstrahlung effect. In addition, a search for DM with mass in the multi-GeV region (4–20 GeV) was conducted with a lower energy threshold than previous analysis of XMASS. Elastic nuclear scattering was used to search down to a nuclear recoil equivalent energy of 2.3 keV, and upper limits of 2.9 ×10−42 cm2 at 8 GeV was obtained. A search for dark matter using an underground single-phase liquid xenon detector was conducted at the Kamioka Observatory in Japan, particularly for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). We have used 705.9 live days of data in a fiducial volume containing 97kg of liquid xenon at the center of the detector. The event rate in the fiducial volume after the data reduction was (4.2±0.2)×10−3day−1kg−1keVee−1 at 5keVee, with a signal efficiency of 20%. All the remaining events are consistent with our background evaluation, mostly of the “mis-reconstructed events” originated from 210Pb in the copper plates lining the detector's inner surface. The obtained upper limit on a spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section was 2.2×10−44cm2 for a WIMP mass of 60GeV/c2 at the 90% confidence level, which was the most stringent limit among results from single-phase liquid xenon detectors. We have searched for exotic neutrino-electron interactions that could be produced by a neutrino millicharge, by a neutrino magnetic moment, or by dark photons using solar neutrinos in the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. We observed no significant signals in 711 days of data. We obtain an upper limit for neutrino millicharge of 5.4×10−12e at 90% confidence level assuming all three species of neutrino have common millicharge. We also set flavor-dependent limits assuming the respective neutrino flavor is the only one carrying a millicharge, 7.3×10−12e for νe, 1.1×10−11e for νμ, and 1.1×10−11e for ντ. These limits are the most stringent yet obtained from direct measurements. We also obtain an upper limit for the neutrino magnetic moment of 1.8×10−10 Bohr magnetons. In addition, we obtain upper limits for the coupling constant of dark photons in the U(1)B−L model of 1.3×10−6 if the dark photon mass is 1×10−3 MeV/c2, and 8.8×10−5 if it is 10 MeV/c2.

Hidden photons and axion-like particles are candidates for cold dark matter if they were produced non-thermally in the early universe. We conducted a search for both of these bosons using 800 live-days of data from the XMASS detector with 327 kg of liquid xenon in the fiducial volume. No significant signal was observed, and thus we set constraints on the α′/α parameter related to kinetic mixing of hidden photons and the coupling constant gAe of axion-like particles in the mass range from 40 to 120 keV/c2, resulting in α′/α

Excited states of 77Cu have been investigated by use of single proton knock-out reaction at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory in RIKEN in order to reveal the main components of the proton single-particle states. Three excited states were observed at 271, 902 and 2068 keV in 77Cu. The lowest-energy excited state follows the trend predicted for the crossing of the 3/21− and 5/21− states. Comparing the excitation energies of the 3/2−, 5/2− and 7/2− levels from 69Cu to 77Cu one can see that the Z=28 shell gap between the p3/2 and f7/2 states is rather stable, while the f5/2−f7/2 spin–orbit splitting decreases by ∼1.5 MeV in agreement with shell model calculations using the tensor force.

Double electron capture is a rare nuclear decay process in which two orbital electrons are captured simultaneously in the same nucleus. Measurement of its two-neutrino mode would provide a new reference for the calculation of nuclear matrix elements whereas observation of its neutrinoless mode would demonstrate lepton number violation. A search for two-neutrino double electron capture on 124Xe is performed using 165.9 days of data collected with the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. No significant excess above background was observed and we set a lower limit on the half-life as 4.7×1021 years at 90% confidence level. The obtained limit has ruled out parts of some theoretical expectations. We obtain a lower limit on the 126Xe two-neutrino double electron capture half-life of 4.3×1021 years at 90% confidence level as well.

A search for dark matter was conducted by looking for an annual modulation signal due to the Earth's rotation around the Sun using XMASS, a single phase liquid xenon detector. The data used for this analysis was 359.2 live days times 832 kg of exposure accumulated between November 2013 and March 2015. When we assume Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter elastically scattering on the target nuclei, the exclusion upper limit of the WIMP–nucleon cross section 4.3×10−41 cm2 at 8 GeV/c2 was obtained and we exclude almost all the DAMA/LIBRA allowed region in the 6 to 16 GeV/c2 range at ∼10−40 cm2. The result of a simple modulation analysis, without assuming any specific dark matter model but including electron/γ events, showed a slight negative amplitude. The p-values obtained with two independent analyses are 0.014 and 0.068 for null hypothesis, respectively. We obtained 90% C.L. upper bounds that can be used to test various models. This is the first extensive annual modulation search probing this region with an exposure comparable to DAMA/LIBRA.

The decay of a new four-quasiparticle isomeric state in 160Sm has been observed using γ-ray spectroscopy at the RIBF, RIKEN. The four-quasiparticle state is assigned a 2π⊗2ν π52−[532], π52+[413], ν52−[523], ν72+[633] configuration. The half-life of this (11+) state is measured to be 1.8(4) μs. The (11+) isomer decays into a rotational band structure, based on a (6−) ν52−[523]⊗ν72+[633] bandhead, consistent with the gK−gR values. This decays to a (5−) two-proton quasiparticle state, which in turn decays to the ground state band. Potential energy surface and blocked-BCS calculations were performed in the deformed midshell region around 160Sm. They reveal a significant influence from β6 deformation and that 160Sm is the best candidate for the lightest four-quasiparticle K isomer to exist in this region. The relationship between reduced hindrance and isomer excitation energy for E1 transitions from multiquasiparticle states is considered with the new data from 160Sm. The E1 data are found to agree with the existing relationship for E2 transitions.

Circulating apolipoprotein B (apoB) exists in two forms; apoB-100 and apoB-48. ApoB-48 is a truncated form of apoB resulting from RNA editing. The editing enzyme, called apobec-1, converts a cytidine (C) at nucleotide 6666 in apoB 100 mRNA to a uridine (U) and changes a CAA codon to an in-frame stop codon, UAA. We have produced a specific rabbit polyclonal antiserum against apobec-1 by genetic immunization. The cDNA of mouse apobec-1 was inserted downstream and in-frame at the BamH I site in the last exon of human growth hormone cDNA driven by a cytomegalovirus promoter. This plasmid was injected together with another plasmid expressing granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor into the thigh muscles of a rabbit. The resulting antiserum demonstrated high specificity on Western blots, and inhibited the apoB mRNA editing activity of mouse liver extract in a dose-dependent manner. This report demonstrates that DNA immunization is a powerful technique that can be readily applied to other sparse or difficult-to-purify proteins in lipid metabolism.

High density lipoprotein (HDL) with and without apolipoprotein (apo) E was quantified and characterized in subjects with three genotypes of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) deficiency: the nonsense mutation in intron 14 (10 homozygotes and 5 heterozygotes); the missense mutation in the exon 15 (3 homozygotes and 9 heterozygotes); and the Int14A/D442G in 6 compound heterozygotes. ApoE-poor and apoE-rich HDL-cholesterol levels were elevated significantly in all genotypic groups with the decrease in CETP activity, indicating that both types of HDL-cholesterol can be a substrate for CETP. However, an unchanged or only slightly increased serum apoA-II level in each genotype indicated that the HDL particles with apoA-II are relatively resistant to CETP-mediated lipid transfer. Serum apoE-rich HDL level was considerably higher in the Int14A homozygotes than in the compound heterozygotes, in spite of similar apoE-poor HDL-cholesterol levels, which may indicate that apoE-rich HDL is a better substrate for CETP than apoE-poor HDL. Although the apoE-rich and apoE-poor HDL subclasses were similar in the accumulation of cholesteryl ester and depletion of triglyceride, the accumulation of free cholesterol was unique to apoE-rich HDL, indicating inhibited cholesterol esterification on this lipoprotein. Clinical laboratories should be aware of the discrepancy in HDL-cholesterol measurements that comes from the different recoveries of apoE-rich HDL using commercial reagents. In conclusion, CETP deficiency causes considerable quantitative and compositional changes in HDL subclasses, reflecting a significant physiological role for CETP in HDL metabolism.

Background: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a fatal disease caused by severe deficiency in ADAMTS13 activity. ADAMTS13 activity measurement is essential for the diagnosis of TTP, but conventional standard assays are manual and time-consuming. Automated ADAMTS13 activity assays have recently become available; however, their accuracy remains challenging., Objectives: We here developed a novel chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA) for ADAMTS13 activity that is fully automated, highly sensitive, and has a short reaction time (17 min). We evaluated the utility of our fully automated CLEIA for measuring ADAMTS13 activity and inhibitory antibodies and compared it with conventional manual assays., Patients/methods: We compared our CLEIA for ADAMTS13 activity and inhibitory antibodies with an in-house FRETS-VWF73 assay and commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using samples from 100 patients and 50 healthy donors. Agreement between assays was evaluated using a cutoff value of 10 IU/dl for ADAMTS13 activity and 0.5 BU/ml for inhibitory antibodies., Results: The CLEIA and conventional assays for ADAMTS13 activity correlated well. The CLEIA showed high agreement with the FRETS-VWF73 assay (kappa = 0.96) and ELISA (kappa = 1.0) in classifying patients with a cutoff value of 10 IU/dl for ADAMTS13 activity. Furthermore, in classifying patients with the cutoff value of 0.5 BU/ml for inhibitory antibodies, the CLEIA agreed strongly with the FRETS-VWF73 assay (kappa = 0.95) and ELISA (kappa = 0.98). Its diagnostic performance for TTP was satisfactory., Conclusions: The high-performance and fully automated CLEIA enables rapid in-hospital diagnosis and follow-up of TTP, as well as detection of inhibitory ADAMTS13 autoantibodies., (Copyright © 2024.
