Peritectic carbon steels are more prone to surface cracking during continuous casting than other carbon steels. The main problems are the formation of longitudinal depressions and of transversal near-corner cracks. It is normally assumed that these problems are related to the δ->γ phase transformation and its associated volume contraction of 0.5%. In this work, we utilize phase-field simulations in the Fe–C and Fe–Mn to access the stress and strain fields which develop just as a consequence of the δ->γ phase transformation. We show that the deformation tends to concentrate in the vicinity of δ-γ-liquid triple junction and that the developed stresses are high enough to produce local plastic deformation of the phases. It is also demonstrated that the undercooling value set for the simulations affects the stress level in an important way.

The present investigation focuses on the solidification of peritectic binary alloys in the systems Fe–Mn and Fe–C by utilizing phase-field simulations. Isothermal and directional solidification conditions were simulated with this approach and the following aspects were investigated: the phases evolution during the peritectic transformation close to the peritectic temperature for the Fe–Mn alloys with 9.5 and 11.0 wt.%, the kinetics of the γ-phase growth simultaneously into the liquid and into the δ-phase during the peritectic transformation for several alloys under isothermal conditions in the Fe–Mn peritectic plateau, the γ-phase thickness during the peritectic reaction in the Fe–Mn system and, finally, the behavior of the remaining δ-phase amount at the end of solidification for different cooling rates in the Fe–C peritectic alloy. The model approach was checked by comparison with literature data. It was concluded that the present approach is consistent in yielding quantitative results for the interested phase transformation. Metal additive manufacturing (AM) improves the design flexibility of titanium aluminides (TiAl-based alloys) as a new class of high-temperature alloys towards widespread applications. In this work, the underlying mechanisms responsible for the site-specific thermal history and grain evolution during laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) of TiAl-based alloys are investigated through an integrated computational and experimental effort. In specific, a multiphysics modeling framework integrating a finite element thermal model with a highly efficient phase-field method is developed to simulate the solidification microstructure at different locations within the melt pool during LPBF processing. The investigation of process-microstructure relationship is accomplished using a Ti-45Al (at.%) alloy for a binary approximation, with a focus on site-specific primary dendrite arm spacing (PDAS) and non-equilibrium microsegregation. The microstructural sensitivity to spatial variations, individual processing parameters, and misorientation angle between the preferred crystalline orientation and the temperature gradient direction are studied to thoroughly understand the rapid solidification during LPBF. LPBF experiments are carried out to validate the modeling results in terms of melt pool dimensions and site-specific PDAS across the melt pool. The knowledge gained in this work will benefit the development of AM processing routine for fabrication of high-performance TiAl-based alloys towards extensive applications.

This data article contains the programs for the calculation of the spinodal decomposition growth rate and for the modeling of the spinodal gap and concentration profiles in nanoparticles which were used in our article (Pogorelov et al., 2017) [1]. The modeling is based on the mathematical model of spinodal phase decomposition with intercalation rate conditions on the boundaries (Singh et al., 2008) [2].The maximal growth rate and the parameters of the concentration wave function can be evaluated for a fixed mean composition and intercalation rate. Furthermore, the maximal growth rate as a function of concentration and particle site can be evaluated for various intercalation rates.

The present investigation shows quantitative results for the peritectic phase transformation of FeMn alloys utilizing phase-field simulations in 1-D and 2-D. The phase-field method used was based on an adaptation of the proposal of Folch and Plapp [Phys. Rev. E, 2005, 72, 011602] for the eutectic reaction. The two stages of peritectic phase transformation, the peritectic reaction and the peritectic transformation, were investigated numerically utilizing this phase-field approach. The evolution of the phases was quantitatively analyzed during the peritectic transformation and the fractions of the phases at the end of the solidification were compared with the thermodynamic equilibrium, defined by the phase diagram, for the case of 1-D simulation with peritectic concentration. An assessment of the behavior of the concentration gradient in the γ-phase (the peritectic phase) through time was also carried out and a mathematical function which describes the γ-phase thickness evolution was defined. Finally, 2-D simulations were performed to clearly identify the two stages of the peritectic phase transformation. The obtained results show two main facts: (1) the numerical model is able to simulate quantitatively this phase transformation; and, (2) this numerical tool can be utilized for investigating quantitatively some aspects (normally determined indirectly) that are difficult to be determined by direct measurements in experimental works.
