The friction power losses in spur gears can be computed as the integral, along the entire path of contact, of the normal load, multiplied by the friction coefficient and the elemental sliding. Good agreement with experimental results are obtained by estimating the load from the minimum potential energy load sharing model, and the friction coefficient from the equation provided by Xu in 2005. From this approach, a complete study of the influence of the design parameters (number of teeth, gear ratio, pressure angle, addendum modification coefficients, etc.) on the mechanical efficiency is presented.
