Previously it has been demonstrated that Haemophilus influenzae (H. i.) vaccination of experimental animals results in β-adrenergic blocking effects. In this study the effects of H. i. vaccination of rats were investigated on the β-adrenoceptor population in rat lung assessed by a radioligand binding assay. Vaccination four days beforehand with H. i. did not induce changes in 3H-dihydroalprenolol binding. However, inhibition studies, using procaterol, revealed changes in the ratio of β2/β1-adrenergic binding: 80 ± 2% β2-adrenergic binding for controls versus 45 ± 6% for H. i. vaccinated rats.
