Arsenic is a trace element and a metalloid which is prominently known as an environmental hazard. At present, rising health apprehensions are linked to emanating from a wide array of industrial, chemical, residential, agricultural, and technological sources, leading to extensive pollution of water, soil, and air ecosystems including flora, fauna and humans. It poses significant harm to biological organisms upon acute and chronic exposure. In this review, we delve into the reported experimental data that elaborates on arsenic as a toxicant, with particular emphasis on its occurrence, metabolism and diverse molecular mechanisms involved. It also includes the major molecular mechanisms leading to systemic toxicity with special emphasis on shedding light on the intricate ways it disrupts the nervous system.

The disposal of hazardous waste materials in landfills and open areas creates a severe impact on the environment. Silica Fume (SF), a by-product from the ferrosilicon and silicon industry, is generated in high quantities. Recent studies have highlighted the advantages of reusing SF to produce high-strength concrete (HSC) and ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) instead of discarding it. This paper herein reviews the current research on SF in concrete and discusses the physical and chemical properties, mechanical properties, durability, and microstructure. Depending on the concentration of the SF, flexural, tensile, and compressive strength was positively influenced. Also, SF improved the pore size to increase drying shrinkage through the pozzolanic reaction. A few studies showed the disadvantages of SF exhibiting the negative impact on workability and shrinkage of concrete. The influence of SF on cement hydration products should be analyzed from the microstructure perspective.

Landfills and dumpsites are the final point of solid waste deposition and management in developing countries due to lack of recycling methods. Herein, we have investigated the occurrence, polymer composition and characterization of plastic pollution at the Lemna solid waste dumpsite, Calabar Nigeria. A total of 21 plastics were sampled and categorized into 10 representative plastic types for effective identification and characterization. The plastic categories were PET bottles, LDPE, PP, HDPE, PS tray, PVC fiber and PVC others. PET bottles were the most abundant (28.5%), followed by PP > LDPE > HDPE, while PS trays, PVC fiber and PVC others were the least prevalent plastics at the dumpsite. FT-IR analysis showed that only 5 different plastics polymers (PP, PET, PE, PVC, and PS) were identified and characterized, out of the 10 plastics categories collected. However, PP and PET were the most abundant plastic polymers at the dumpsite consisting of 33.3- and 28.6%, respectively, and reflecting their widespread application in domestic and household packaging products. PS was the least abundant plastic (4.8%) polymer. We used the density gradient separation techniques and recovered only three (3) plastic polymer types from soil at the dumpsite, namely - PET, PS, and PP with sizes >5mm in diameter and indicating macroplastics. Given that plastics are vectors of contaminants of legacy and emerging concern, their continuous deposition at dumpsites represent a significant environmental, human and wildlife health issue of concern.

To address the parameter instability issues in hazardous materials handling during multi-machine loading and unloading operations, we propose a Full-Scale Smart Parameter Optimization Control (FSPOC) system specifically designed for multi-machine coordination. This system leverages a novel fish scale prediction algorithm tailored for cooperative multi-machine environments. Initially, the fish scale prediction algorithm, inspired by bionic fish scales, is developed to predict future system behavior by analyzing historical data. Building on this algorithm, we introduce a disturbance cancellation control theorem and design a parameter optimization controller to enhance stability in high-dimensional nonlinear spaces. The FSPOC method is then applied to a multi-machine cooperative system, enabling online distributed parameter optimization for complex systems with multiple degrees of freedom. The effectiveness of the proposed method was validated through simulations, where it was compared with two other optimization techniques: Genetic Algorithm-based PID (GAPID) and Chaotic Atomic Search Algorithm-based PID (CHASO). Today, with the growth of the human population, industrial activities have also increased. Different industries such as painting, cosmetics, leather, etc. have broadly developed, and as a result, they also produce a lot of pollutants. These pollutants can enter the environment and pollute water, air, and soil. Organic dyes, nitro compounds, drug residues, pesticides and herbicides are pollutants that should be removed from the environment. Natural polymers or biopolymers are important types of organic materials that are broadly applied for different applications. Among them, polysaccharides and lignin, which are two types of biopolymers, have attracted much consideration owing to their advantages such as biocompatibility, environmental friendly, safety, availability, etc. Polysaccharides include cellulose, gum, starch, alginate (Alg), chitin, and chitosan (CS). On the other hand, bentonite is one of the types of clays, which owing to their properties like large specific surface area, adsorption performance, naturally available, etc., have drawn the interest of many researchers. As a result, the synthesis of a composite including polysaccharide/lignin and bentonite can be very efficient for different applications, especially environmental ones. In this review, we instigated the preparation of these composites as well as the removal performance of them. Composting is an effective and necessary modality in the recycling of agricultural wastes such as livestock manure, furfural, and straw. However, the risks of heavy metals (HMs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during industrial-scale composting process have not been adequately assessed, especially with the addition of bacterial agents. In this study, changes in HMs toxicity, ARGs propagation and microbial community structure during industrial-scale aerobic composting of livestock manure were firstly investigated with various substrates addition. Moreover, the effect of the addition of bacterial agents (Bacillus strains) was evaluated. The results showed that industrial aerobic composting process could immobilize various HMs with different extents and significantly reduce the levels of ARGs such as intl1 and oqxB genes. The addition of Bacillus strains could further reduce the levels of most detected ARGs and the bioavailability of Cu and Cr, and the relative abundance of ereA and tetA was undetectable in some materials. After composting, the main bacterial community structures were similar among different substrates irrespective of bacterial agents and indicated that the composting process was the main driver for their change. This study provides a scientific reference for the safe reuse of livestock manure.

One of the most challenging and non-trivial tasks in robot-based rescue operations is the Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) sign detection in dangerous operation fields, in order to prevent further unexpected disasters. Each HAZMAT sign has a specific meaning that the rescue robot should detect and interpret to take a safe action, accordingly. Accurate HAZMAT detection and real-time processing are the two most important factors in such robotics applications. Furthermore, the rescue robot should cope with some secondary challenges such as image distortion and restricted CPU and computational resources, embedded in the robot. In this research, we propose a CNN-Based pipeline called DeepHAZMAT for HAZMAT sign detection and segmentation in four steps: (1) Input data volume optimisation before feeding into the CNN network, (2) Application of a YOLO-based structure to collect the required visual information from the hazardous areas, (3) HAZMAT sign segmentation and separation from the background using adaptive GrabCut technique, and (4) Post-processing optimisation using morphological operators and convex hull algorithms. In spite of the utilisation of a very limited CPU and memory resources, the experimental results show the proposed method has successfully maintained a better performance in terms of detection-speed and detection-accuracy, compared to classical and modern state-of-the-art methods.

The distribution of hazardous materials in urban areas is an important tactical and strategic decision problem. Reducing the transportation risk and increasing the traffic safety is also an important indicator for a sustainable transportation. For the last four decades, a multitude of approaches for risk assessment and modelling have been proposed. However, the majority of these approaches are focusing on different adaptations of shortest path problems. Risk modelling for routing and distributions problems, like the vehicle routing problem (VRP) have received far less attention, especially when the vehicle load is varying during a trip. This paper investigates how different factors are influencing the risk values and the outcomes of the hazardous materials vehicle routing problem (HMVRP). As foundation for the HMVRP, the path generation between the customer and the depot nodes in realistic urban road networks is considered. The influence of the fleet size is investigated. Different risk models are compared, with a special focus on the comparison of classical load-independent risk models with load-dependent risk models. Additionally, the tradeoff between risk minimization and the minimization of travelled distance is investigated. The results show, that these factors can have strong impact on the outcomes and lead to different “optimal” solutions.

Saint Martin Island (SMI), the only coral island in Bangladesh, is located in the Bay of Bengal and has been identified as a marine protected area (MPA). Littering cigarette butts (CBs) waste in an ecologically sensitive environment can have numerous adverse effects. The purpose of this research is to investigate the abundance and density of CBs in SMI and to assess the pollution status using the Cigarette Butt Pollution Index (CBPI). This study is conducted based on the visual survey method in the three types of land use zones of SMI. During the peak season, the investigation was carried out from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in December 2023. A total of 4481 CBs item were counted, and the density ranged from 0.37 to 1.76 m -2 with an average value of 0.99 m -2 across 12 sampling campaigns. The highest density was observed at service zones, and the fishing zones had the lowest density. The calculated CBPI values revealed that 75 % of the sampling stations were in the "severe pollution" while 25 % were classified as "high pollution" status, underscoring the prevalence of hazardous CBs across most areas of SMI. To tackle these issues requires regulatory measures, public awareness initiatives, and community involvement. Water sources have become extremely scarce and contaminated by organic and inorganic industrial and agricultural pollutants as well as household wastes. Poisoning water resources by dyes and metals is a problem because contaminated water can leak into subsurface and surface sources, causing serious contamination and health problems. Therefore, developing wastewater treatment technologies is valuable. Today, hydrogels have attracted considerable attention owing to their broad applications. Hydrogels are polymeric network compositions with significant water-imbibing capacity. Hydrogels have potential applications in diverse fields such as biomedical, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and biosensors. They can be prepared by using natural (biopolymers) and synthetic polymers. Synthetic polymer-based hydrogels obtained from petrochemicals are not environmentally benign; thus, abundant plant-based polysaccharides are found as more suitable compounds for making biodegradable hydrogels. Polysaccharides with many advantages such as non-toxicity, biodegradability, availability, inexpensiveness, etc. are widely employed for the preparation of environmentally friendly hydrogels. Polysaccharides-based hydrogels containing chitin, chitosan, gum, starch (St), etc. are employed to remove pollutants, metals, and dyes. Among these, St has attracted a lot of attention. St can be mixed with other compounds to make hydrogels, which remove dyes and metal ions to variable degrees of efficiency. Although St has numerous advantages, it suffers from drawbacks such as low stability, low water solubility, and fast degradability in water which limit its application as an environmental adsorbent. As an effective way to overcome these weaknesses, various modification approaches to form starch-based hydrogels (SBHs) employing different compounds have been reported. Burning Arabian incense (Bakhour) is a common indoor practice in the Middle East and the Arabian Gulf region. However, the chemical composition of this substance has never been studied. Three different Bakhour brands were selected for this study. A complete chemical profile for the raw samples was determined using carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen elemental analysis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and gas chromatography mass spectrometry techniques. A wide range of elements and compounds were identified, many of which are hazardous to health. Nitrogen was found in all samples which should raise concerns due to the known health implications of amines, nitrogen oxides and nitrites. In addition toxic metals such as cobalt, copper, iron, nickel, lead, and zinc were also determined in all samples. The amounts of these metals are equivalent to those in raw tobacco, where they are known to pose health risks. Three types of solvents (acetone, dichloromethane and toluene) were used for the extraction of organic compounds. Carcinogens, toxins and irritants were found along others of different health implications. Isolation of these compounds provides preliminary evidence on the harmful consequences of being exposed to Bakhour.

This review updates information on the historical manufacture and unintentional production of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs). The direct toxicity of PCNs as a result of occupational human exposure and through contaminated feed in livestock was recognised decades ago, making PCNs a precursor chemical for consideration in occupational medicine and occupational safety. This was confirmed by the listing of PCNs by the Stockholm Convention as a persistent organic pollutant in the environment, food, animals and humans. PCNs were manufactured globally between 1910 ∼ 1980, but reliable data on the volumes produced or national outputs are scarce. A total figure for global production would be useful for the purposes of inventory and control and it is clear that combustion related sources such as waste incineration, industrial metallurgy and use of chlorine are current major sources of PCNs to the environment. The upper bound estimate of total global production has been put at 400,000 metric tons but the amounts (at least, many 10 s of tonnes) that are currently emitted unintentionally every year through industrial combustion processes should also be inventoried along with estimates for emissions from bush and forest fires. This would however require considerable national effort, financing and co-operation from source operators. The historical (1910-1970 s) production and resulting emissions through diffusive/evaporative releases through usage, are still reflected in documented occurrence and patterns of PCNs in human milk in Europe and other locations worldwide. Detailed analysis of electronic waste (e-waste) generation and composition is of utmost importance for the proper management of growing e-waste stream worldwide, containing both hazardous and valuable materials. Considering the absence of such comprehensive and up-to-date studies in Canada, this work presents the first estimate of put-on-market electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), the in-use stocks of EEE and e-waste generation in Canada from 1971 to 2030 for 51 product categories comprising 198 product types. Using a dynamic material flow analysis (MFA), the put-on-market EEE is estimated based on trade data retrieved from national and international import and export statistics, and the in-use stocks of EEE and the resulting e-waste are calculated using the Weibull distribution function. The results show that the total mass of EEE within the 60-year period is estimated to be 42.3 million tonnes, with an annual average growth rate of approximately 0.5%. By 2030, the total accumulated in-use stock of EEE is estimated to exceed 13 million tonnes. The estimated e-waste over the 60-year timespan is 29.1 million tonnes. The total annual e-waste generation in Canada is calculated to be 252 kilo tonnes (kt) and 954 kt in the years 2000 and 2020 respectively, which is estimated to reach 1.2 million tonnes by 2030. The e-waste generation per capita increased from 8.3 kg in 2000 to 25.3 kg in 2020 and is estimated to reach 31.5 kg by 2030. The majority of industrial products are identified as persistent organic pollutants after their date of expiry, which is highly harmful to the ecosystem and human health and also going to be banned around the world. Paint latex is one of those pollutants which become a hazardous waste material after stocking for a long time. Approximately 20% of color paints do not get used for their desired purpose after getting sold out and end up in a landfill. Now a day's construction industry is inclining towards the various types of geo-polymer concrete since it does not require cement. But that geo-polymer concrete has too much less workability as compared to the same grade of control cement concrete. To achieve the desired workability as well as other properties of geo-polymer concrete by using waste paint latex as performance improving admixture is the main motive of the present research. Fourteen different mixes of control and calcined clay-based geo-polymer concrete have been prepared by adding up to 3% waste paint latex of weight of cementitious materials and a detailed study has been done on various properties such as workability, rheology, shrinkage, strength and its microstructure. The presence of nanoparticles of TiO 2 in waste paint latex has helped to produce extra hydration products, by which the mechanical properties, durability and microstructure of both traditional and geo-polymer concrete have increased. The lifetime and efficiency of diesel particulate filters (DPFs) strongly depend on the proper and periodic cleaning and servicing. Unfortunately, in some cases, inappropriate methods are applied to clean the DPFs, e.g., using air compressors without proper disposal procedures which can have negative impacts on human health, the environment, and DPF's efficiency. However, there is no information available about the properties of this kind of PM. This research is therefore presented to explore the physicochemical and toxicity properties of aged PM trapped in a DPF (using compressed air for PM sampling) employing STEM, SEM, EDS, Organic Carbon Analyzer, TGA/DSC, and Raman Spectrometer for investigating the physicochemical properties, and assays of cell viability, cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) for investigating the toxicity properties. Also, analyses from fresh PM samples from the diesel vehicle at two engine speeds are presented. It is found that at a certain/fixed PM number/mass for all three samples tested, the PM from DPF compared with the fresh PM can have both positive (particularly having the lowest water-soluble total carbon ratio) and negative impacts on human health (particularly having the highest cell death rate of 13.4%, ROS, and TNF-α) and the environment., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Ecological risk assessment based on scientific data is crucial for understanding causal relationships between chemical pollution and environmental risks. Simultaneously, a balance is required between socioeconomic factors and scientific evidence. The TRIAD approach, which incorporates three lines of evidence (LoE)-chemical (Chem-LoE), ecotoxicological (Ecotox-LoE), and ecological (Eco-LoE)-was applied in five sites of an abandoned mine for site-specific soil ecological risk assessment (SERA). In combination, the three LoEs showed that two sites had extremely high risks, one site had moderate risk, and the other site had low risk. At all sites, Chem-LoE exhibited high-integrated risk values. In Ecotox-LoE and Eco-LoE, some species were not affected despite high metal concentrations in the soil samples collected from the sites, indicating that the bioavailability of metals differed according to the physiochemical properties of the soil medium. This study is significant as multiple analyses were performed considering ecosystem structure to reduce uncertainty in SERA. The results provide information to support effective decision-making risk management to protect the soil ecosystem. In most cases, direct X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of solutions entails technical difficulties due to a high X-ray scattering background resulting in a spectrum with a poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Key factors that determine the sensitivity of the method are the energy resolution of the detector and the amount of scattered radiation in the energy range of interest. Limiting the width of the primary spectrum by the use of secondary targets, or filters, can greatly improve the sensitivity for specific portions of the spectrum. This paper demonstrates a potential method for SNR optimization in direct XRF analysis of chromium (Cr) contamination. The suggested method requires minimal sample preparation and achieves higher sensitivity compared to existing direct XRF analysis. Two states of samples, fly ash and leachate from municipal solid waste incineration, were investigated. The effects of filter material, its absorption edge and filter thickness were analyzed using the combination of Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code and energy-dispersive XRF spectrometry. The applied filter removes primary photons with energies interfering with fluorescence photons from the element of interest, thus results in lower background scattering in the spectrum. The SNR of Cr peak increases with filter thickness and reaches a saturation value when further increased thickness only increases the measurement time. Measurements and simulations show that a Cu filter with a thickness between 100 μm and 140 μm is optimal for detecting Cr by taking into account both the SNR and the exposure time. With direct XRF analysis for solutions, the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of the achieved system was 0.32 mg/L for Cr, which is well below the allowed standard limitation for landfills in Sweden. Photovoltaic (PV) systems are regarded as clean and sustainable sources of energy. Although the operation of PV systems exhibits minimal pollution during their lifetime, the probable environmental impacts of such systems from manufacturing until disposal cannot be ignored. The production of hazardous contaminates, water resources pollution, and emissions of air pollutants during the manufacturing process as well as the impact of PV installations on land use are important environmental factors to consider. The present study aims at developing a comprehensive analysis of all possible environmental challenges as well as presenting novel design proposals to mitigate and solve the aforementioned environmental problems. The emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG) from various PV systems were also explored and compared with fossil fuel energy resources. The results revealed that the negative environmental impacts of PV systems could be substantially mitigated using optimized design, development of novel materials, minimize the use of hazardous materials, recycling whenever possible, and careful site selection. Such mitigation actions will reduce the emissions of GHG to the environment, decrease the accumulation of solid wastes, and preserve valuable water resources. The carbon footprint emission from PV systems was found to be in the range of 14-73 g CO 2 -eq/kWh, which is 10 to 53 orders of magnitude lower than emission reported from the burning of oil (742 g CO 2 -eq/kWh from oil). It was concluded that the carbon footprint of the PV system could be decreased further by one order of magnitude using novel manufacturing materials. Recycling solar cell materials can also contribute up to a 42% reduction in GHG emissions. Arsenic and selenium presence in acid mine waters (AMWs) limits their disposal due to environmental regulations. The focus to solve the economic infeasibility is directed to sustainable solutions, promoting resource recovery. In fact, rare earth elements (REEs) recovery is proposed in most of the Iberian Pyrite Belt AMWs. However, the presence of arsenic and selenium may impact in the REEs recovery. Among different alternatives, nanofiltration (NF) provides a concentration stage on REEs recovery, reduces the nominal flow and removes hazardous species. In this work, Iberian Pyrite Belt AMWs with up to 10 mg/L REEs, containing arsenic (2 mg/L), were treated with a NF membrane. Firstly, AMWs were pre-treated with H 2 O 2 /NaOH, to oxidise Fe(II) to Fe(II) and As(III) to As(V), promoting their removal and avoiding their potential precipitation at the membrane. Subsequently, NF pressure effect (6-20 bar) was studied, removing metals (>95 %), whereas arsenic rejections ranged from 60 to 71 %. Then, water recovery potential was evaluated at 10, 15 and 22 bar by reproducing a 10-stages NF plant. Results showed that the proposed treatment could be an alternative for arsenic and selenium removal (70 μg/L and 0.5 μg/L permeate concentrations, respectively) to achieve mining discharge limits according to regulations., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. A biorefinery is an efficient approach to generate multiple bio-products from biomass. With the increasing demand for bioenergy and bio-products, biorefineries are essential industrial platforms that provide needed demand while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A biorefinery consists of various conversion technologies where particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted. The released PM and VOCs pose detrimental health and environmental risks for society. Moreover, the projected rise of global bioenergy demand may lead to an increase in PM and VOCs from biorefineries. With the use of cleaner technologies and approaches, PM and VOCs can be avoided in biorefineries. The study presents the landscape of the research field through a bibliometric review of emissions from a biorefinery. A comprehensive review of works on the reduction of PM and VOCs in a biorefinery is outlined. The study includes a perspective of cleaner technologies and approaches utilized in biorefineries to mitigate these hazardous materials. The results reveal that the employment of life cycle assessment, safety assessment, and green chemistry processes can significantly reduce PM and VOC emissions as well as the consumption of hazardous substances in the biorefinery., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. The release of hazardous materials originated from industrial/natural accidents or intentional attacks within a compact urban environment can be disastrous. Once released, the hazardous pollutants will be dispersed through the atmosphere instantaneously and threaten human health. This study aims at evaluating the overall effect of upstream obstacles and hazardous sources on the downstream targets through parametric investigations. A complex building morphology composed of obstacle group, target group, one main street canyon and several subsidiary street canyons is proposed. The dimensional parameters along with the sources are set as variables. An orthogonal numerical test with Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model is carried out, indicating that the source conditions play a more important role than the obstacles dimension in pollutants accumulation around targets. The flow and dispersion structures are categorized into five patterns, which are strongly relevant to the dimension parameters. Terrorism by means of explosives has become a crucial threat. Nanoparticles with distinctive properties can offer novel aspects for instant detection of explosive materials. Common explosives are organic compounds that contain nitro group (NO 2 ) along with carbon and hydrogen elements. This study demonstrates complete identification of nitramine explosives (RDX & HMX) using colloidal silica nanoparticles. Sustainable fabrication of colloidal silica was conducted via hydrothermal processing technique. Explosive identification involves a digestion of the tested material using strong acid. The digestion process results in the development of nitro group and corresponding formaldehyde segment. The identification of the nitro group was performed using colloidal silica nanoparticles functionalized with secondary amine to develop a characteristic dark blue colour. Simultaneous identification of formaldehyde segment was performed using colloidal silica functionalized with aromatic phenol to develop a red colour. This robust explosive detection technology can find wide applications on site where instant identification to assess potential threat is a crucial demand. Accurately monitoring of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), the most hazardous mycotoxin in agricultural products, is essential for the public health, but various testing demands (e.g. detection range, sensitivity) for different samples can be challenging for sensors. Here, we developed a sensitivity-programmable ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor for AFB1 analysis in peanut. Thionine functionalized reduced graphene oxide (THI-rGO) served as reference signal generator, ferrocene-labelled aptamer (Fc-apt) output the response signal. During analysis, the formation of Fc-apt-AFB1 complex led to its stripping from the electrode and faded the current intensity of Fc (I Fc ), while the current intensity of THI (I THI ) was enhanced. And ratiometric detection of AFB1 was achieved by using the current intensity ratio (I THI /I Fc ) as quantitative signal. Compared with ratiometric strategies that highly rely on the labelled aptamers, the proposed strategy could regulate the value of I THI /I Fc by changing the modification of Fc-apt. And the detection sensitivity was found to be closely related to I THI /I Fc . Under the optimal conditions, the fabricated aptasensor with a dynamic range from 0.05-20 ng mL -1 and a detection limit of 0.016 ng mL -1 for AFB1 analysis. Besides, it exhibited excellent selectivity, reliability and reproducibility. Lighting bonfires in urban parks is a widespread practice. However, few studies have examined their impact on soil properties. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of bonfires on the soil properties of an urban park in Vilnius, Lithuania. The properties studied were soil water repellency (SWR), aggregate stability (AS), soil organic matter (SOM) content, total nitrogen (TN), inorganic carbon (IC), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), extractable calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), potassium (K), aluminum (Al), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), boron (B), chromium (Cr), available phosphorus (P), silicon (Si) and sulfur (S). Soil ratios calculated were carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N), Ca + Mg/(Na + K) 1/2 (SPAR), Ca:Al and Ca:Mg. Three areas were studied: Site 1) Pinus sylvestris L. and Quercus robur L.; Site 2) Aesculus glabra Wild.; and Site 3) Pinus sylvestris L. and Acer plantanoides L. At each site, 20 samples were collected (10 within the bonfire area, 10 from a control area). The results showed significantly higher values of SOM, IC, pH, EC, Ca, Mg, Na, K, P, Al, Zn, Cu, Cr, S, C/N ratio, Ca:Al ratio and Ca:Mg ratio in bonfire soils than in control unburned soils. In bonfire soils, significantly lower values were recorded of SWR, AS, TN, SOM, Al, Mn, Fe, Cr, S and SPAR comparing to control soils. Most affected area by the bonfire was Site 1, which presented a marked increase in heavy metal content comparing to the control. The impact of soil heating was evident in AS, IC, pH, extractable Ca, Mg, Na, K, P, Al, Zn, Cu, Cr, S, and in its ratios. To identify hazardous (illegal and explosive) materials, microwave measurement (free space reflection type method) method has been tried to find best results in different frequency ranges. The main goal is to cluster some materials which are mainly preferred by passenger for aircraft travel. Therefore, the multivariate data analysis methods have been preferred to classify or distinguish the measured liquids. Thus, the abilities of used techniques have been shown to make the classification process easier and more responsive, while determining the convenient measurement method that can reflect the unique properties of the liquids. This review presents the work carried out by the international community in the area of sheet explosive formulations and its applications in various systems. The sheet explosive is also named as PBXs and is a composite material in which solid explosive particles like RDX, HMX or PETN are dispersed in a polymeric matrix, forms a flexible material that can be rolled/cut into sheet form which can be applied to any complex contour. The designed sheet explosive must possess characteristic properties such as flexible, cuttable, water proof, easily initiable, and safe handling. The sheet explosives are being used for protecting tanks (ERA), light combat vehicle and futuristic infantry carrier vehicle from different attacking war heads etc. Besides, sheet explosives find wide applications in demolition of bridges, ships, cutting and metal cladding. This review also covers the aspects such as risks and hazard analysis during the processing of sheet explosive formulations, effect of ageing on sheet explosives, detection and analysis of sheet explosive ingredients and the R&D efforts of Indian researchers in the development of sheet explosive formulations. Biological monitoring in humans (HBM) is widely used in the field of occupational and environmental health. In the situation of an unexpected release of hazardous materials HBM may contribute to the medical support and treatment of exposed individuals from the general population or of emergency responders. Such exposure information may also be used to respond to individual concerns such as questions about a possible relationship between the chemicals released during the incident and health effects. In The Netherlands a guideline was prepared to support early decision-making about the possible use of HBM for exposure assessment during or as soon as possible following a chemical incident. The application of HBM in such an emergency setting is not much different from situations where HBM is normally used but there are some issues that need extra attention such as the choice of the biomarker, the biological media to be sampled, the time point at which biological samples should be collected, the ethics approval and technical implementation of the study protocol and the interpretation and communication of the study results.
