BARI lentils play an important role in Bangladesh for providing essential nutrients to combat micronutrient malnutrition. Hence, the objective of the study was to explore the nutritional, mineral, and bioactive compounds analysis of the selected varieties under different milling conditions. Results exhibited that a significant number of bioactive compounds such as ascorbic acid (15.29 mg/100 g), ß-carotene (142.16 mg/100 g), total carotenoid (67.49 mg/100 g), anthocyanin (1.35 mg/100 g), and total phenolic compounds (20.72 mg GAE/100 g) were plentiful in non-decorticated lentil. In contrast, the non-significant amount of ascorbic acid (4.52 mg/100 g), ß-carotene (64.65 mg/100 g), total carotenoid (11.65 mg/100 g), anthocyanin (0.65 mg/100 g), and total phenolic compounds (11.68 mg GAE/100 g) was found in decorticated lentils. Non-decorticated lentils possessed the highest amount of crude protein (29.63 %), crude fiber (14.12 %), Ca (3.55 %), Mg (1.11 %), Fe (219.00 ppm), and Zn (32.62 ppm). A non-significant difference was noted between cooked decorticated and non-decorticated lentils during organoleptic taste by the sensory evaluators. Apart from this, the most instructive findings are, to utilize non-decorticated lentils that will contribute to minimizing the broken loss (cracked loss) and milling cost of the farmers without any presence of ochratoxin and patulin.

Background: Bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity in mango play significant role in human health. Present study was conducted to investigate the physicochemical and nutritional compositions, bioactive phytochemicals and antioxidant activity of the selected BARI mango varieties and commercial cultivar Langra. Scope and approach: Antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, ascorbic acid, total carotenoids and ß-carotene content of the mangoes were determined. TPC were assessed using high-performance liquid chromatography. Key findings & conclusions: Moisture, ash, total soluble solids, pH, total acidity and total sugar of the BARI mango varieties ranged from 77.50 to 83.60 %, 0.10–0.17 %, 17.50–23.00 °B, 3.45–4.37, 0.64–0.76 % and 9.46–13.46 % whereas, those were 76.33 %, 0.20 %, 17.63 °B, 4.25, 0.63 % and 9.79% respectively for Langra. Phytochemicals; TPC, AA, total flavonoids, TC, ß-carotene and total anthocyanin content of BARI mango ranged from 100.10 to 207.40 mg GAE/g, 9.34–9.52 mg/100 g, 0.38–1.04 mg QE/g, 2.76–3.87 mg/100 g, 178.02–298.00 µg/100 g and 147.26–186.42 mg/100 g whereas, the Langra contained 210.90 mg GAE/g, 9.53 mg/100 g, 1.38 mg QE/g, 4.21 mg/100 g, 314.00 µg/100 g and 189.22 mg/100 g respectively. Total antioxidant capacity, ferric reducing antioxidant power, reducing power capacity, metal chelating capacity, nitric oxide free radical scavenging activity and half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) ranged from 108.10 to 504.00 µg of ascorbic acid/mg of extract, 121.70–244.60 mg/100 g, 6.24–18.70 µg/mL, 33.89–162.60 %, 33.89–70.20 µg/mL and 25.90–27.90 µg/mL whereas, Langra contained 194.25 µg of ascorbic acid/mg, 229.20 mg/100 g, 2.54 µg/mL, 177.80 %, 53.74 µg/mL and 25.11 µg/mL respectively.

Background: Psidium guajava L (Guava) belongs to the Myrtaceae family and has been claimed to possess several pharmacological properties including antidiabetic. Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the anti-hyperglycemic activity of P guajava L leaves aqueous extract on neonatal streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetic model rats. Methods: Streptozotocin was induced (90 mg/kg) intraperitoneally to 48 h old Long Evans rat pups. After three months, 18 male type-2 diabetic model rats were confirmed by OGTT (FG > 7 mmol/L). Therefore, experimental rats were divided into three groups 2) Diabetic water control (10 ml/kg), 3) Gliclazide treated (20 mg/kg), and 4) Extract treated group (1.25g/kg)] Six normal female rats comprised group 1 [Non-diabetic water control (10 ml/kg)]. All rats were treated orally with their respective treatment for 28 consecutive days. Blood samples were collected on 0 days (by tail cut method) and the end day (by cardiac puncture) of the experiment. Eye-catching, aesthetic fashions often suppress its untold dark story of unsustainable processing including hazardous wet treatment. Considering the risks imposed by conventional cotton scouring and following the trend of scouring with enzymes, this study was undertaken to evaluate the bioscouring of cotton knit fabric involving saponin-enriched soapnut as a natural surfactant, applied from a bath requiring a few chemicals and gentle processing conditions, contributing to the eco-friendliness. The proposed application was compared to synthetic detergent engaged enzymatic scouring as well as the classic scouring with Sodium hydroxide. A cellulolytic pectate lyase enzyme (0.5%–0.8% o.w.f) was applied at 55 °C for 60 min at pH 5–5.5 with varying surfactant concentrations. A low concentration of soapnut extract (1 g/L to 2 g/L) was found sufficient to assist in the removal of non-cellulosic impurities from the cotton fabric after bioscouring with 0.5% o.w.f. enzyme, leading to good hydrophilicity indicated by an average wetting time of 4.86 s at the expense of 3.1%–3.8% weight loss. The scoured fabrics were further dyed with 1% o.w.f. reactive dye to observe the dyeing performance. The treated samples were characterized in terms of weight loss, wettability, bursting strength, whiteness index, and color value. The proposed application confronted level dyeing and the ratings for color fastness to washing and rubbing were 4–5 for all of the samples scoured enzymatically with soapnut. The study was also statistically analyzed and concluded.

Background: Irrational and inappropriate use of antibiotics in aquaculture can contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to assess antibiotic usage in inland and coastal fish farms in Bangladesh and identify factors associated with this practice. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study to collect antibiotic usage information from 672 fish farmers in Bangladesh. The frequency of use, the types of antibiotics, the purpose of usage, and antibiotic prescribing practices were estimated. Adjusted odds ratios (aOR) were calculated to measure the association between antibiotic usage and factors related to the characteristics of the farms and farmers using multivariable logistic regression models. Results: Twenty-two farms reported using antibiotics in the last 24 h preceding the interview (3%, 95% CI: 2–5%); 36 farms (5%, 95% CI: 4–7%) in the last 72 h, 141 farms (21%, 95% CI: 18–24%) in the last 14 days, and 478 farms (71%, 68–75%) reported antibiotic usage at least once since the start of their production cycle. Antibiotics usage in the last 14 days preceding the interviews was higher in freshwater fish farms (98%) than in brackish water farms (2%). Oxytetracycline, ciprofloxacin, and amoxicillin were the most frequently used antibiotics. Most of the antibiotics were reported to be used for both therapeutic and prophylactic purposes (71%, 95% CI: 63–78%). Antibiotics used within the last 14 days were mainly advised by feed dealers or drug sellers (51%, 95% CI: 43–60%), followed by farmers themselves (31%, 95% CI: 23–38%) and local service providers (18%, 95% CI, 12–25%). Fish farms having history of antibiotic use within the last 14 days preceding interviews was significantly associated with illness in fish (aOR 1.98, 95% CI:1.21–3.29) compared to farms with healthy fish and fishes cultured in ponds (aOR 9.34, 95% CI: 3.69–23.62) compared to enclosure cultures. Conclusions: Improvement of fish health through better farming practices and changes in feed dealers' and farmers' attitudes towards self-prescription of antibiotic without veterinarian diagnostics may help to reduce the levels of antibiotic usage and thus contribute to mitigating antimicrobial resistance.
