Objective: To assess adolescent awareness of the safety of self-removal of intrauterine contraception (IUC) and explore associations with sociodemographic characteristics, IUC knowledge, and personal experience using an IUC., Study Design: We recruited women aged 15 to 20 years from 21 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. Participants completed an online survey assessing their communication with peers about contraception and knowledge and use of IUCs., Results: Few (11%, 95% CI 9%-13%) adolescents knew that IUC self-removal is safe, whether or not they had personally used an IUC (14% vs 8%, p = 0.01). Knowledge that IUCs do not protect users from sexually transmitted infections (99% vs 91%, p < 0.001) and that IUCs can be removed early (99% vs 88%, p < 0.001) was higher among adolescents who had used an IUC than those who had not. Knowledge that IUC use does not adversely affect fertility after IUC removal (86% vs 63%, p < 0.001) and that IUCs are more effective than birth control pills (82% vs 50%, p < 0.001) also differed by personal experience with an IUC. Awareness of the safety of IUC self-removal was not associated with overall knowledge of IUCs. However, adolescents who knew that IUCs are more effective than birth control pills were more likely to be aware of the safety of IUC self-removal (OR = 1.85, 95% CI 1.12-3.05)., Conclusions: Adolescent women in the U.S. possess incomplete knowledge of many important aspects of IUC use, and awareness of the safety of IUC self-removal is particularly low, even among those who have used an IUC., Implications: Efforts to increase adolescent knowledge of IUC should include information about the safety of IUC self-removal in order to safeguard adolescents' reproductive autonomy., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. In this work, we present the spectral investigation of the interactions between the coverage with alginic acid (AA) and nanoparticles for three different composites containing 74, 80, and 88wt% of magnetite. These results show that the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles are coated with the AA and indicate that there is an interaction between them. Moreover, we have investigated the thermal and magnetic properties of all investigated compounds. We show that bonding of alginic acid to the surface of magnetite results in better thermal stability of the polymer and in higher temperature of AA chains degradation. We find that for dense assembly of magnetite nanoparticles, at low temperatures, the intergranular coupling becomes much stronger than between nanoparticles dispersed in composites., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Imidazolium selenate dihydrate (ImH 2 ) 2 SeO 4 ·2H 2 O crystals have been investigated using Raman and IR spectroscopy. Experimental data were supported by the quantum-chemical calculations (DFT), Hirshfield surfaces and fingerprint plots analysis, and Bader theory calculations. The imidazolium selenate dihydrate crystal exhibits high proton conductivity of the order of ~10 -1 S/m at T=333K. The spectra of this compound are dominated by bands related to the lattice modes, the internal vibrations of the protonated imidazole cation, selenate anion, water molecules, and hydrogen bonds network. In this study, we investigated the effect of land use intensity, soil parameters and vegetation on protistan communities in grassland soils. We performed qualitative (T-RFLP) and quantitative (qPCR) analyses using primers specifically targeting the 18S rRNA gene for all Eukarya and for two common flagellate groups, i.e. the Chrysophyceae and the Kinetoplastea. Both approaches were applied to extracted soil DNA and RNA, in order to distinguish between the potentially active protists (i.e. RNA pool) and the total protistan communities, including potentially inactive and encysted cells (i.e. DNA pool). Several environmental determinants such as site, soil parameters and vegetation had an impact on the T-RFLP community profiles and the abundance of the quantified 18S rRNA genes. Correlating factors often differed between quantitative (qPCR) and qualitative (T-RFLP) approaches. For instance the Chrysophyceae/Eukarya 18S rDNA ratio as determined by qPCR correlated with the C/N ratio, whereas the community composition based on T-RLFP analysis was not affected indicating that both methods taken together provide a more complete picture of the parameters driving protist diversity. Moreover, distinct T-RFs were obtained, which could serve as potential indicators for either active organisms or environmental conditions like water content. While site was the main determinant across all investigated exploratories, land use seemed to be of minor importance for structuring protist communities. The impact of other parameters differed between the target groups, e.g. Kinetoplastea reacted on changes to water content on all sites, whereas Chrysophyceae were only affected in the Schorfheide. Finally, in most cases different responses were observed on RNA- and DNA-level, respectively. Vegetation for instance influenced the two flagellate groups only at the DNA-level across all sites. Future studies should thus include different protistan groups and also distinguish between active and inactive cells, in order to reveal causal shifts in community composition and abundance in agriculturally used systems., (Copyright © 2015. Background: Severe infantile vitamin B12 deficiency is occasionally reported in developed countries due to maternal nutritional deficiency. The clinical manifestation comprises megaloblastic anemia and neurodevelopmental delay culminating in demyelination and brain atrophy. Few case reports have documented manifestation of West syndrome., Patient: We report the 8-year long-term follow-up on a 6-month-old exclusively breast-fed girl with serious vitamin B12 deficiency secondary to undiagnosed maternal pernicious anemia. MRI revealed cerebral atrophy and delayed myelination. Strikingly, initial vitamin B12-mediated improvement of neurological and hematological findings was followed by temporary manifestation of infantile spasms requiring anticonvulsive therapy., Results: Seizures soon dissolved, EEG and MRI scan normalized and developmental catch-up occurred. At the age of 8 years, the girl is symptom-free and visits primary school illustrating remarkable recovery of severe neurodevelopmental delay and symptomatic West syndrome., Conclusion: Infantile vitamin B12 deficiency has to be considered in the differential diagnosis of mental retardation and infantile spasms, especially if maternal nutritional deficiency might be suspected. Objective: There is increasing recognition that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are associated with significant costs and burdens. However, research on their impact has focused mostly on the caregivers of young children; few studies have examined caregiver burden as children transition into adolescence and young adulthood, and no one has compared the impact of ASD to other neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., ADHD)., Method: We conducted an observational study of 192 families caring for a young person (aged 14 to 24 years) with a childhood diagnosis of ASD or ADHD (n = 101 and n = 91, respectively) in the United Kingdom. A modified stress-appraisal model was used to investigate the correlates of caregiver burden as a function of family background (parental education), primary stressors (symptoms), primary appraisal (need), and resources (use of services)., Results: Both disorders were associated with a high level of caregiver burden, but it was significantly greater in ASD. In both groups, caregiver burden was mainly explained by the affected young person's unmet need. Domains of unmet need most associated with caregiver burden in both groups included depression/anxiety and inappropriate behavior. Specific to ASD were significant associations between burden and unmet needs in domains such as social relationships and major mental health problems., Conclusions: Adolescence and young adulthood are associated with high levels of caregiver burden in both disorders; in ASD, the level is comparable to that reported by persons caring for individuals with a brain injury. The present paper describes a preparation method and molecular investigations of new biodegradable proton-conducting carbohydrate polymer films based on alginic acid and benzimidazole. Electric conductivity was studied in a wide temperature range in order to check the potential application of these compounds as membranes for electrochemical devices. Compared to pure alginic acid powder or its film, the biodegradable film of alginic acid with an addition of benzimidazole exhibits considerably higher conductivity in the range above water boiling temperature (up to approximately 10(-3) S/cm at 473 K). Due to this important feature the obtained films can be considered as candidates for application in high-temperature electrochemical devices. The microscopic nature and mechanism of the conduction in alginate based materials were studied by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). New bio-inspired polymer composites of alginic acid and benzimidazole were created and characterized by FT NIR Raman spectroscopy. The obtained films with 1:0.5, 1:1 and 1:1.5 molar ratio are homogeneous, with good mechanical properties. Raman spectra recorded at room temperature revealed that the obtained films are a new compound with a different molecular structure and physical properties compared with pure substrates: alginic acid and benzimidazole. Raman band related to vibration of COOH entity at 1740 cm(-1) of alginic acid disappears in the alginic acid:benzimidazole composites, in which new Raman band related to COO(-) was found. Additionally, characteristic lines observed in polymer composites which may be associated with vibrations of NH groups, can be attributed to the linking of proton to deprotonated N atom in benzimidazole group. Possibility of such proton exchange is a promising property which might facilitate the application of obtained composites to anhydrous proton conducting electrolytes in fuel cells., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors induce the hyperacetylation of nucleosomal histones in carcinoma cells resulting in the expression of repressed genes that cause growth arrest, terminal differentiation, and/or apoptosis. In vitro selectivity of several novel hydroxamate HDAC inhibitors including succinimide macrocyclic hydroxamates and the non-hydroxamate alpha-ketoamide inhibitors was investigated using isolated enzyme preparations and cellular assays. In vitro selectivity for the HDAC isozymes (HDAC1/2, 3, 4/3, and 6) was not observed for these HDAC inhibitors or the reference HDAC inhibitors, MS-275 and SAHA. In T24 and HCT116 cells these compounds caused the accumulation of acetylated histones H3 and H4; however, the succinimide macrocyclic hydroxamates and the alpha-ketoamides did not cause the accumulation of acetylated alpha-tubulin. These data suggest "selectivity" can be observed at the cellular level with HDAC inhibitors and that the nature of the zinc-chelating moiety is an important determinant of activity against tubulin deacetylase.

Pseudopterosin E (PSE), a C-10 linked fucose glycoside and pseudopterosin A (PSA), a C-9 xylose glycoside isolated from the marine gorgonian Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae were both effective in reducing PMA-induced mouse ear edema when administered topically (ED50 (microg/ear) PSE(38), PSA(8)) or systemically (ED50 (mg/kg, i.p.) PSE (14), PSA (32)). Both compounds exhibited in vivo analgesic activity in phenyl-p-benzoquinone-induced writhing (ED50 (mg/kg, i.p.) PSE(14), PSA(4). PSE inhibited zymosan-induced writhing (ED50 = 6 mg/kg, i.p.), with a concomitant dose-dependent inhibition of peritoneal exudate 6-keto-prostaglandin F1alpha (ED50 = 24 mg/kg) and leukotriene C4 (ED50 = 24 mg/kg). In vitro, the pseudopterosins were inactive as inhibitors of phospholipase A2, cyclooxygenase, cytokine release, or as regulators of adhesion molecule expression. PSA inhibited prostaglandin E2 and leukotriene C4 production in zymosan-stimulated murine peritoneal macrophages (IC50 = 4 microM and 1 microM, respectively); however, PSE was much less effective. These data suggest that the pseudopterosins may mediate their anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting eicosanoid release from inflammatory cells in a concentration and dose-dependent manner.

The aim of this retrospective study is to compare the outcome of abdominoperineal excision (APE) and anterior resection (AR) for rectal cancer in 136 patients. Local recurrence rates and 5-year survival probabilities were estimated for the AR and APE group. Further comparisons were carried out between hand-sewn and stapled anastomoses after AR, and between patients after AR and APE for tumours 2 to 6 cm from the dentate line. Local recurrence after AR occurred in 14% and after APE in 10% of these cases. Five-year survival probabilities and local recurrence frequencies showed no statistically significant difference (P > 0.05). Local recurrence rates were 13.5% after hand-sewn anastomoses and 15% after the stapled procedure. No statistically significant difference was observed in the 5-year survival and recurrence rate (P > 0.05). Seventy-four of 136 patients had tumours located 2 to 6 cm from the dentata line. Local recurrence occurred in 21% after AR and 5% after APE, showing a statistically significant difference in frequency (P < 0.05). No significant difference was found in cumulative 5-year survival probabilities. APE for advanced low rectal cancer showed a significant reduction in local recurrences compared to AR.
