The absence of sexual dimorphism in many birds often makes sex determination difficult. In particular immature birds and adults of monomorphic species show no external sex characteristics. Molecular techniques based on DNA hybridization or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are standard methods for sex identification. However, these methods are expensive and time consuming procedures and require special sample preparation. Noninvasive methods for a rapid determination of bird's gender are of increasing importance for ornithologists, breeders as well as for successful captive-breeding programs. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is one such technique that can provide gender specific information. In this study, using the example of domestic pigeons (Columba livia f. dom.) we demonstrate that only a small amount of the feather pulp is needed to determine the gender. FT-IR spectroscopic images of feather pulp suspensions were recorded in transmission mode. Principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were performed to identify the sex. The gender related information are described by 2nd and 4th principal component principle component (PC). The 2nd PC represents different amounts of proteins while the 4th PC shows variations within the amide I and amide II bands as well as in the region of phosphate vibrations of nucleic acids. Blood cells of male pigeons exhibit a significantly higher amount of proteins and nucleic acids than those of female pigeons. Feather pulp samples of male species were assigned with 100% accuracy. Seven from eight female samples were assigned correctly while one sample could not be classified. Styloid-carotid artery syndrome was first described by Eagle and is associated with cervical and facial pain caused by head movement resulting from mechanical compression of the carotid nerve plexus due to an elongated styloid process. The case of a 49-year-old man with persistent cervical pain, neurological symptoms and an elongated styloid process of 7.5 cm is reported here; this patient was successfully treated using Piezosurgery. A 1.5-year-old neutered male rabbit was presented with chronic nasal discharge and ataxia. Rapid progression of neurological signs was noted subsequent to general anaesthesia and the rabbit was humanely destroyed due to the poor prognosis. At necropsy examination there were no gross changes affecting the brain or spinal cord. Microscopical examination revealed that the perikarya of numerous neurons in the brain and spinal cord were distended by the intracytoplasmic accumulation of pale, finely granular to vacuolar material. Transmission electron microscopy showed this to be composed of concentric membranous cytoplasmic bodies. Thin layer chromatography revealed elevation of GM2 ganglioside in the brain of this rabbit compared with that of an unaffected control rabbit. Enzymatically, there was markedly reduced activity of tissue β-hexosaminidase A in brain and liver tissue from the rabbit. This was a result of an almost complete absence of the enzymatic activity of the α-subunit of that enzyme. In the present study, the lipid raft composition of a canine mastocytoma cell line (C2) was analyzed. Lipid rafts were well separated from non-raft plasma membranes using a detergent-free isolation technique. To study the influence of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on raft fatty acid composition in comparison to non-raft cell membrane, C2 were supplemented with one of the following: α-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, linoleic acid or arachidonic acid. Enrichment of the culture medium with a specific PUFA resulted in an increase in the content of this fatty acid both in rafts and non-raft membranes. Contents of cholesterol and protein were found not to be affected by the changes in the fatty acid profiles. In conclusion, our data provide strong evidence that PUFA modulate lipid composition and physiological properties of membrane micro domains of mast cells which in turn may have effects on mast cell function., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Oxidative burst and cytokines synthesis by macrophages is a crucial point for successful pathogen defense. However, macrophage cell lines commonly used in inflammatory research differ in their responses to external stimuli. Thus, there is the necessity to carefully characterize the cells before experimental usage. In this study we investigated the applicability of two widely-used macrophage cell lines, RAW264.7 and P-388D1, for studying oxidative burst and cytokine synthesis. Cells were tested for NADPH oxidase activity, iNOS-mRNA levels, and the release of NO, TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-10. Stimulation of RAW264.7 triggered oxidative burst as well as synthesis of TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-10. In contrast, following stimulation P-388D1 produced TNF-alpha and IL-6 only. Our findings confirm the relevance of cell line selection for reliability of in vitro-experiments. Moreover, the results approve RAW264.7 cells to be a suitable model to investigate the modulation capability of macrophages e.g. in context of fatty acid supplementation., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. This study examined the shelf life of cured sausage under different packaging conditions from vitamin E supplemented pigs. One group (n=6) of crossbred pigs received a normal fattening diet containing 20 ppm α-tocopherol for 39 days before slaughter. Another group was fed a diet containing 410 ppm α-tocopherol during the same period. After slaughter, cured sausages were produced, packaged under three different atmospheric conditions, ripened for 4 weeks and then stored for 8 weeks (9 °C; 200 lux). The α-tocopherol content was recorded in the fat, liver, muscles and the sausage. TBARS, L*, a*, b* values and antioxidative capacity were evaluated in the sausage during storage. The results showed a transfer of vitamin E into tissues and sausage but no detectable effect on TBARS and colour stability. However, antioxidative effects of vitamin E were seen by provocation. Probably the effect of vitamin E in the sausage was masked by nitrite in the curing salt. The oxygen content of the packs had an influence on TBARS and colour stability.

Finite element analysis (FEA) is used to study the effect of geometric variations on the properties of rectangular cantilevers and U-shaped Joule-heated cantilevers. Simulations of locally thinned cantilevers as well as of cantilevers modified by the implementing of a hole or a side cut are compared with fabricated cantilevers, which are tuned by focused ion beam (FIB) milling. By locally thinning the cantilevers, the resonance frequency and the spring constant are reduced. For a hole, the internal stress is increased while for a side cut, the lateral spring constant is decreased. Good agreement between the measured and the simulated resonance frequencies is observed. Simulations of the current density and the temperature distributions attained during the passage of current through a doped silicon layer are performed to optimize the design of Joule-heated cantilevers (U-shaped) for thermal gravimetric applications. A very uniform temperature distribution over a region near the apex can be realized by slitting the U-shaped cantilever. In such a way, the heating power can be minimized by effecting only a small variation in the geometry of a U-shaped cantilever. A simple fabrication process for the fabrication of Joule-heated cantilevers is presented, which consists mainly of a uniform conductive p-doped layer.
