Abstract

Ancient semi-natural grasslands in Europe are important for ecosystem service (ES) provision. Often, the surrounding matrix contains 'Grassland Green Infrastructure' (GGI) that contain grassland species which have the potential to supplement grassland ES provision across the landscape. Here we investigate the potential for GGI to deliver a set of complementary ES, driven by plant composition.We surveyed 36 landscapes across three European countries comprising core grasslands and their surrounding GGI. We calculated community-level values of plant species characteristics to provide indicators for four ES: nature conservation value, pollination, carbon storage and aesthetic appeal.Inferred ES delivery for GGI was substantially lower than in core grasslands for conservation, pollination and aesthetic appeal indicators, but not for carbon storage. These differences were driven by the GGI having 17% fewer plant species, and compositional differences, with 61% of species unique to the core grasslands. In addition, connectivity to the core, the amount of GGI and inferred seed dispersal distances by livestock, were strongly positively correlated with conservation value, pollination and aesthetic indicators. All ES indicators showed similar responses to the GGI spatial structure and distance to the core, suggesting robust effects of these drivers on ES. We projected that improved landscape-wide delivery of nature conservation value and pollination could be achieved through targeted GGI management. Reductions in the distances seeds would need to disperse, more GGI, along with a diversification of the GGI elements, were predicted to enhance service credits.We conclude that for vegetation-related ES, species surveys can be employed to assess potential ES delivery. Creating and enhancing GGI is a useful landscape management strategy to supplement the ES delivered by ancient grasslands.

26. Mediterranean service trees respond less to drought than oaks

Abstract

Some widely distributed timber species, such as oaks, are vulnerable to low soil water availability and drought. Therefore, selecting broadleaved minor species with lower sensitivity to drought could be an alternative in seasonally dry areas. However, the growth performance of these minor hardwood species is unknown, particularly under warm and dry conditions at the southern limit of their distribution range. We assessed the radial growth response to drought by correlating tree-ring and climate data in coexisting service trees (Sorbus domestica) and two oak species (Quercus faginea, Quercus pyrenaica). Trees were sampled in three Mediterranean sites located in Spain with different precipitation patterns. We used the Vaganov–Shashkin (VS) growth model to infer the main climate constraints of growth. To ascertain whether climate is changing tree phenology, we also simulated changes in xylem onset and cessation timings and compared them with leaf falling dates in service trees. Service trees showed a trend towards advancing leaf fall, but this was not related to xylem growth. Oaks responded more to a drought index than service trees. The strongest responses corresponded to droughts peaking from spring to summer, but oaks tended to respond to longer droughts (9–13 months) than service trees (2–7 months). These different responses are due to the positive responses of all species to high precipitation in the growing season, but the sensitivity of oak growth to warm summer conditions and increased atmospheric water demand. The VS model indicated a more bimodal growth pattern in services trees than in oaks, which could allow the former to recover better after a dry summer. Service trees could be more widely used as a source of valuable timber wood under Mediterranean continental conditions.

However, a global assessment of the associations between predatory protists and their bacterial prey is still missing at a cross-ecosystem level. This knowledge is critical to better understand the importance of top-down links in structuring microbiomes. Here, we examined 38 sequence-based datasets of paired bacterial and protistan taxa, covering 3,178 samples from diverse habitats including freshwater, marine and soils. We show that community profiles of protists and bacteria strongly correlated across and within habitats, with trophic microbiome structures fundamentally differing across habitats. Soils hosted the most heterogenous and diverse microbiomes. Protist communities were dominated by predators in soils and phototrophs in aquatic environments. This led to changes in the ratio of total protists to bacteria richness, which was highest in marine, while that of predatory protists to bacteria was highest in soils. Taxon richness and relative abundance of predatory protists positively correlated with bacterial richness in marine habitats. These links differed between soils, predatory protist richness and the relative abundance of predatory protists positively correlated with bacterial richness in forest and grassland soils, but not in agricultural soils. Our results suggested that anthropogenic pressure affects higher trophic levels more than lower ones leading to a decoupled trophic structure in microbiomes. Together, our cumulative overview of microbiome patterns of bacteria and protists at the global scale revealed major patterns and differences of the trophic structure of microbiomes across Earth’s habitats, and show that anthropogenic factors might have negative effects on the trophic structure within microbiomes. Abstract

There is strong empirical evidence on the importance of the spatial pattern of vegetation in dryland hydrologic and geomorphologic dynamics. However, changes in vegetation cover and spatial pattern are often linked, making it difficult to disentangle and assess their independent hydro-geomorphologic roles. We used synthetic sponges placed on the soil surface to mimic the aboveground structure of vegetation patches, and manipulated patch cover and pattern as well as the sink capacity of the patches on a set of 24 (2 × 1 m) runoff plots. Combining natural-rainfall and simulated-rainfall experiments, we aimed to test that (1) both vegetation cover and pattern independently control runoff and sediment yield; (2) for any given cover, coarsening the vegetation pattern entails increasing runoff and sediment yield; and (3) pattern effect is mostly exerted by modulating the source-sink dynamics of the system. We found that increasing either patch cover or patch density decreased runoff and sediment yields from natural rainfalls, yet the effect of patch density largely disappeared when the effect of the co-varying patch cover was removed. Simulated-rainfall experiments on plots with equal medium-low patch cover showed however that coarser patterns (lower patch density; higher patch size) increased runoff coefficients and reduced time to runoff as compared with finer patterns. The effect of patch density was particularly clear when the sink function of vegetation patches was also mimicked. Rainfall interception and direct soil protection proved to be critical mechanisms underlying the effects of patch cover, yet they barely contributed to the effects of patch pattern. The control of overland flow by patch pattern was exerted through changes in the level of runoff disruption. However, physical obstructions to runoff hardly reduced runoff unless coupled to mimicked soil sinks. Overall this work demonstrates the independent effects of patch cover and pattern on the hydro-geomorphologic functioning of patchy landscapes, with patch cover being the primary hydrologic control factor and patch pattern exhibiting its full potential for low and medium low patch cover values. Our findings provide useful information for modelling and understanding dryland vegetation dynamics, and for designing management and restoration measures that take into account the critical role played by source-sink dynamics and hydrological connectivity in dryland landscapes. 36. Intra-annual taxonomic and phenological drivers of spectral variance in grasslands

Abstract

According to the Spectral Variation Hypothesis (SVH), spectral variance has the potential to predict taxonomic composition in grasslands over time. However, in previous studies the relationship has been found to be unstable. We hypothesise that the diversity of phenological stages is also a driver of spectral variance and could act to confound the species signal. To test this concept, intra-annual repeat spectral and botanical sampling was performed at the quadrat scale at two grassland sites, one displaying high species diversity and the other low species diversity. Six botanical metrics were used, three taxonomy based and three phenology based. Using uni-temporal linear permutation models, we found that the SVH only held at the high diversity site and only for certain metrics and at particular time points. We tested the seasonal influence of the taxonomic and phenological metrics on spectral variance using linear mixed models. A significant interaction term of percent mature leaves and species diversity was found, with the most parsimonious model explaining 43% of the intra-annual change. These results indicate that the dominant canopy phenology stage is a confounding variable when examining the spectral variance -species diversity relationship. We emphasise the challenges that exist in tracking species or phenology-based metrics in grasslands using spectral variance but encourage further research that contextualises spectral variance data within seasonal plant development alongside other canopy structural and leaf traits.

Abstract

Both climate change and anthropogenic activities contribute to the deterioration of terrestrial water resources and ecosystems worldwide, with Central Asia and its endorheic lakes being among the most severely affected. We used a digital elevation model, bathymetry maps and Landsat images to estimate the areal water cover extent and volumetric storage changes for eleven small terminal lakes in Burabay National Nature Park (BNNP) in Northern Kazakhstan from 1986 to 2016. Based on the analysis of hydrometeorological observations, lake water balance, lake evaporation and Budyko equations, driven by gridded climate and global atmospheric reanalysis datasets, we evaluate the impact of historical climatic conditions on the water balance of the BNNP lake catchments. The total surface water area of the BNNP lakes decreased by around 7% for that period, mainly due to a reduction in the extent of three main lakes. In contrast, for some smaller lakes, the surface area increased. Overall, we attribute the decline of the BNNP lakes’ areal extent and volume to the prolonged periods of water balance deficit when lake evaporation exceeded precipitation. However, during the most recent years (2013-2016) precipitation increased and the BNNP lake levels stabilized.

Abstract

Recent research has identified the connectivity of the bare-soil interpatch areas as a key pattern attribute that controls resource conservation and structure-function feedbacks in dryland ecosystems, and several indices have been developed for this attribute. We aimed to characterize the dependence of bare-soil connectivity on vegetation cover and provide a null model that helps differentiate the independent roles of vegetation pattern and cover in hydrological connectivity and dryland functioning. Using a simple hydrological connectivity index, Flowlength, we developed explicit theoretical expressions for its expected value and variance under a null model of random vegetation cover distribution and constant slope. We also obtained the expected value of Flowlength for a model including an aggregation parameter. We found a non-linear inverse relationship between bare-soil connectivity and vegetation cover, which accounts for sharp increases in runoff and sediment yield for low cover values. The expressions for the mean values and standard errors for the random model allow the construction of confidence intervals, and thus testing for deviations from the null random model in experimental data. We found that positive deviations of Flowlength from the expected values, either under random or aggregated-pattern null models, sharply increase before transitions to a degraded state in a spatially-explicit dryland vegetation model, suggesting that an extraordinary increase in bare-soil connectivity may lead to unavoidable degradation. Our results show that increased deviation from the expected cover-dependent bare-soil connectivity may serve as indicator of ecosystem functional status and imminent transitions.
