Search

A search is presented for the Higgs boson decay to a pair of electrons (Image 1) in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV. The data set was collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb−1. The analysis uses event categories targeting Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion. The observed upper limit on the Higgs boson branching fraction to an electron pair is 3.0×10−4 (3.0×10−4 expected) at the 95% confidence level, which is the most stringent limit on this branching fraction to date.

Thrombosis can be associated with coronavirus disease 2019 infection. Computed tomography is essential for the diagnosis of pneumonia in these patients and conventionally contrast agents are required for the assessment of thrombus. In this study, we report a patient with coronavirus disease 2019 who was diagnosed with thrombosis using spectral noncontrast computed tomography with electron density imaging. The patient was a 76-year-old man who presented with a 2-day history of lower-leg pain. Tachycardia and atrial fibrillation were identified, with elevated D-dimer, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, creatine kinase, and C-reactive protein levels. Polymerase chain reaction testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 was positive. Conventional computed tomography showed pulmonary changes consistent with coronavirus disease 2019 and no changes in the aorta, but spectral computed tomography with electron density imaging of noncontrast computed tomography showed a thrombus in the right external iliac artery. Spectral computed tomography with electron density imaging provides more data compared with conventional computed tomography and has the potential to depict thrombus without the use of contrast media.

It is well known that the interaction of radiation with matter can be described using classical or quantum physics in relation to three systems: incoming radiation, matter, and scattered radiation. Currently, there is no general non-perturbative theory of electromagnetic wave scattering by free electrons, which describes the scattering process using quantum physics. In this paper, such a non-relativistic theory is presented, where statistics and the number of incoming photons is taken into account, and in scattering, statistics with the number of scattered photons is obtained. This theory is completely analytical, considering an arbitrary number of electrons in the system and, in a particular case, goes over into the previously known theory of scattering as the number of incident photons tends to infinity. It is shown that this theory can differ greatly from the previously known theory of Thomson scattering in the non-perturbative case and at relatively small numbers of incident photons. In addition, this theory is applicable to the scattering of ultrashort pulses by free electrons. This theory has good prospects for application in quantum optics, since it fully takes into account the quantum nature of the incident and scattered radiation when interacting with an arbitrary number of free electrons, including in the non-perturbative case.

Electrokinetic enhanced bioremediation (EK-Bio) is practical for trichloroethene (TCE) dechlorination because the cathode can produce a wide range of dissolved H 2 (DH) concentrations of 1.3-0 mg/L from the electrode to the aquifer. In this study, TCE dechlorination was investigated under different DH concentrations. The mechanisms were discussed by analyzing the microbial community structure and abundance of organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) using 16S rRNA, and the gene abundances of key enzymes in the TCE electron transport chain using metagenomic analysis. The results showed that the moderate DH concentration of 0.19-0.53 mg/L exhibited the most pronounced TCE dechlorination, even better than the higher DH concentrations, due to the optimal redox environment, the enrichments of OHRB, reductive dehalogenase (rdhA) genes and key enzyme genes in the electron generation and transport chain. More electrons were obtained from H 2 metabolism by Dehalobacter by promoting the formation of [NiFe] hydrogenase (HupS/L/C) or from glycolysis by versatile OHRB by stimulating the formation of formate and enriching formate dehydrogenase (FDH) under moderate DH conditions. In addition, the enhanced amino acid metabolism improved the vitamin K cycle for electron transport and enriched the reductive dechlorinating enzyme (RDase) genes. Microbial dehalogenation, using obligate and facultative organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB), has been widely used to remediate halohydrocarbon-polluted sites. Owing to the scarcity of OHRB, and poor efficiency in H 2 -mediating interspecies electron transfer, microbial dehalogenation relying on OHRB is easily disturbed by Fe(III), sulfate, and nitrate as electron competitors. In the present study, pyrogenic carbon, featuring electron snorkeling, was introduced into the process of microbial dehalogenation, which facilitated the electron transfer from electro-active microbes to halohydrocarbon, then invigorating dehalogenation. As a consequence, fine dehalogenation of trichloroethene (TCE, as representative halohydrocarbon) was obtained, expressed as the nearly complete diminishment of 150 µmol L -1 TCE and the sequestration of high contents of ethene (72.2-122.3 µmol L -1 within 80 d). Such fine dehalogenation was ascribed to the synergy between pyrogenic carbon and electro-active microbes. Multiple microbes in mixed cultures, including Clostridium sp., Sporanaerobacter, Sedimentibacter, Paraclostridium, and Tissierella, stimulated TCE dehalogenation by providing electrons to pyrogenic carbon. Redox moieties on pyrogenic carbon enabled it to snorkel electrons, which facilitated the electron transfer from electro-active microbes to TCE, consequently invigorating TCE dehalogenation. The commonly employed strategies for engineering second near-infrared (NIR-II) organic phototheranostic agents are based on expanding conjugated backbone length, strengthening donor (D)-acceptor (A) effect, or forming J-aggregates. We constructed the D-A-D' structure by incorporating strong electron-donating methoxy and tetraphenylethene (TPE) moieties on the electron-deficient Aza-BODIPY core, and simultaneously expanded the π-conjugation effect by introducing thiophene groups, to obtain a dye BDP-TPE. Next, the nanoparticles P-TPE were prepared via the assembly of BDP-TPE with amphiphilic polypeptides (mPEG 2000 -P(Asp) 10 ), and successfully constructed the J-aggregates. The obtained P-TPE exhibited strong absorption and fluorescence with maxima at 808 and 1018 nm, respectively, with a conspicuous absolute quantum yield of 0.241 %. Moreover, P-TPE also showed excellent biocompatibility, and high photothermal conversion efficiency of 61.15 %, and excellent resistance to pH, long-term storage, and photobleaching. In vitro and in vivo experiments revealed that P-TPE exhibited good biocompatibility and effectively achieved NIR-II fluorescence imaging-guided PTT with complete tumor ablation under 808 nm laser irradiation. Nitrate pollution poses significant threats to both aquatic ecosystems and human well-being, particularly due to eutrophication and increased risks of methemoglobinemia. Conventional treatment for nitrate-contaminated wastewater face challenges stemming from limited availability of carbon sources and the adverse impacts of toxins on denitrification processes. This study introduces an innovative Intimately Coupled Photocatalysis and Biodegradation (ICPB) system, which utilizes Ag 3 PO 4 /Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 , denitrifying sludge, and polyurethane sponge within an anoxic environment. This system demonstrates remarkable efficacy in simultaneously removing bio-recalcitrant organic compounds (such as sulfamethoxazole) and nitrates, surpassing standalone treatment methods. Optimally, the ICPB achieves complete removal of sulfamethoxazole, along with 87.7 % removal of DOC, and 81.8 % reduction in nitrate levels. Its ability to sustain pollutant removal and biological activity over multiple cycles can be attributed to the special formation of biofilm and mineralization of sulfamethoxazole, minimizing both photocatalytic damage and toxic inhibitory effects on microbes. The dominant microbial genera of ICPB system included Castellaniella, Acidovorax, Raoultella, Giesbergeria, and Alicycliphilus. Electron radiotherapy has long been preferred to photons for the treatment of superficial lesions because of its physical characteristics (high dose at the surface, rapid decrease in depth). Other characteristics (penumbra, heterogeneity on an oblique or irregular surface) make them difficult to use. In most indications (skin cancers, head and neck, medulloblastoma), with technical progress, in some cases they have been replaced by intensity-modulated conformal radiotherapy, brachytherapy and contact therapy. Other indications (drainage of mesotheliomas or irradiation of benign lesions) have disappeared. The low frequency of use leads to problems of safety and cost-effectiveness. However, modern photon radiotherapy techniques are still less effective than electrons in specific indications such as total skin irradiation (mycosis fungoides) or certain thin chest wall irradiations after total mastectomy, reirradiation or paediatric treatments without protons. Flash therapy, initiated by electrons, has been developed over the last 10 years, providing high-dose irradiation in an extremely short time. Initial results show good efficacy, with fewer side effects than with conventional radiotherapy. These results are leading to clinical technological developments on a larger scale. Although it has been replaced in most indications by more modern techniques, electron radiotherapy remains essential for targeted indications in specialised centres. This study aimed to investigate the effects of electron beam (E-beam) irradiation at different doses (0-15 kGy) on the solubility, rheological properties, emulsification characteristics, and moisture distribution of chicken myofibrillar proteins (MPs). Irradiation treatment notably increased the solubility, surface hydrophobicity, emulsification properties, and apparent viscosity of MPs, based on conformational changes caused by irradiation-induced oxidative denaturation of proteins. However, high doses of irradiation (15 kGy) induced in excessive cross-linking and aggregation of proteins, reducing the solubility, emulsification properties, and shear stress. Degradation of myosin heavy and light chains in irradiated MPs increased the content of β-turns and random coils. Additionally, the initial relaxation times of T 21 and T 22 in irradiated protein gels were reduced, and the peak value of P 21 was increased, which improved the water-capturing ability of protein gels. The influence of electron beam irradiation (EBI) treatment on the modification of gelatin-galactose glycosylation was thoroughly examined. The results of the degree of grafting and browning revealed that EBI triggered the glycosylation reaction of gelatin. The degree of glycosylation exhibited a gradual increase with the rising irradiation dose, reaching a maximum of 25 kGy. Moreover, the irradiation process opened up gelatin's internal structure, exposing its hydrophobic groups. This exposure led to an enhancement in sample surface hydrophobicity. The fluorescence intensity at the maximum emission wavelength of the fluorescence spectra decreased; Fourier infrared spectroscopy demonstrated a new absorption peak at 1074 cm -1 for the glycosylation product. These findings substantiate that gelatin formed a new product through covalent bonding with galactose. Glycosylation boosted the emulsification stability of gelatin from 1.92 min to 10.42 min and improved its emulsification and rheological properties. These outcomes affirm that EBI can effectively induce the glycosylation reaction of gelatin, thereby enhancing its functional properties. In addition, EBI has the potential to supplant the conventional heating glycosylation method. In this study, the enhancement of Pickering effect of ovalbumin (OVA) with bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNFs) prepared by electron beam irradiation was investigated and the environmental stability of oil-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by OVA/BCNFs complexes was explored by varying ratios of OVA/BCNFS (1:0.2, 1:0.4, 1:0.6, 1:0.8, 1:1) and oil phase concentrations (10 %, 20 %, 30 %, 40 %, 50 %, 60 %). Droplet sizes of Pickering emulsions were decreased with the increase of the proportion of BCNFs, while the viscosity and storage modulus (G') of Pickering emulsions were increased. The gel strength of Pickering emulsions was positively correlated with the oil phase content. Pickering emulsions stabilized by OVA/BCNFs complexes were endowed excellent environmental stability under varying pH, ionic strength, and thermal conditions. Moreover, after encapsulating curcumin in Pickering emulsions, the retention rates of curcumin were improved significantly during room temperature, UV light, and thermal treatment. The effects of electron beam irradiation (EBI) pretreatment on the alkaline extraction of pectic polysaccharides from Diaphragma juglandis fructus (DJF) are highly dependent on the irradiation dosage. Comprehensive characterizations encompassing physicochemical, structural, and functional properties were conducted on crude pectic polysaccharide extract from DJF subjected to various EBI doses. EBI pretreatment significantly increased the yields of crude pectic polysaccharides extract (increasing by 41.89 %), also facilitating the extraction of uronic acid, RG-I structure, and protein content, despite causing a decrease in total sugar content. EBI pretreatment induced the degradation of pectin, resulting in decreased molecular weight, particle size, crystallinity, viscosity, thermal stability, and water holding capacity, while enhancing solubility and oil holding capacity. Variations in physicochemical and structural properties induced by different EBI doses influenced the functional activities of DJF pectic polysaccharides. Low-dose EBI (at 5 kGy) pretreatment markedly improved the emulsifying activity/stability (increasing by 20.82/74.10 %) and ABTS/DPPH radical scavenging activity (increasing by 27.91/12.40 %), whereas high-dose EBI pretreatment (50 kGy) greatly enhanced foaming capacity/stability (increasing by 259.99/175.56 %). The emission of venenous sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) and its derivatives from industrial applications such as coking, transportation and food processing has caused great concern about public health and environmental quality. Probes that enable sensitivity and specificity to detect SO 2 derivatives play a crucial role in its regulations and finally mitigating its environmental and health impacts, but fluorescent probes that can accurately, rapidly and on-site detect SO 2 derivatives in foodstuffs and environmental systems rarely reported. Herein, a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe (ZTX) for the ratiometric response of bisulfite (HSO 3 - ) was designed and synthesized by regulating the structure of high-performance HSO 3 - fluorescent probe SL previously reported by us based on structural analyses, theoretical calculations and related literature reports. The Michael addition reaction between the electronic-deficient C=C bond and HSO 3 - destroys ZTX's π-conjugation system and blocks its intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process, resulting in a significant fading of the fuchsia solution and the bluish-purple fluorescence turned light blue fluorescence. Fluorescent imaging of HSO 3 - in live animals utilizing ZTX has been demonstrated. The quantitative analysis of HSO 3 - in food samples using ZTXvia a smartphone has been also successfully implemented. Simultaneously, the ZTX-based test strips were utilized to quantificationally determine HSO 3 - in environmental water samples by a smartphone. Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is a greenhouse gas that could accumulate during the heterotrophic denitrification process. In this study, the effects of different chemical oxygen demand to nitrogen ratio (COD/N) on N 2 O production and electron competition was investigated. The electron competition was intensified with the decrease of electron supply, and Nos had the best electron competition ability. The model simulation results indicated that the degradation of NOx-Ns was a combination of diffusion and biological degradation. As reaction proceeding, N 2 O could accumulate inside biofilm. A thinner biofilm and a longer hydraulic retention time (HRT) might be an effective way to control N 2 O emission. Methane, the most significant reduced form of carbon on Earth, acts as a crucial fuel and greenhouse gas. Globally, microbial methane sinks encompass both aerobic oxidation of methane (AeOM), conducted by oxygen-utilizing methanotrophs, and anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), performed by anaerobic methanotrophs employing various alternative electron acceptors. These electron acceptors involved in AOM include sulfate, nitrate/nitrite, humic substances, and diverse metal oxides. The known anaerobic methanotrophic pathways comprise the internal aerobic oxidation pathway found in NC10 bacteria and the reverse methanogenesis pathway utilized by anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME). Diverse anaerobic methanotrophs can perform AOM independently or in cooperation with symbiotic partners through several extracellular electron transfer (EET) pathways. AOM has been documented in various environments, including seafloor methane seepages, coastal wetlands, freshwater lakes, soils, and even extreme environments like hydrothermal vents. The environmental activities of AOM processes, driven by different electron acceptors, primarily depend on the energy yields, availability of electron acceptors, and environmental adaptability of methanotrophs. It has been suggested that different electron acceptors driving AOM may occur across a wider range of habitats than previously recognized. Additionally, it is proposed that methanotrophs have evolved flexible metabolic strategies to adapt to complex environmental conditions. This review primarily focuses on AOM, driven by different electron acceptors, discussing the associated reaction mechanisms and the habitats where these processes are active. Carbon steel microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) is known to occur via extracellular electron transfer (EET). A higher biofilm sessile cell count leads to more electrons being harvested for sulfate reduction by SRB in energy production. Metal surface roughness can impact the severity of MIC by SRB because of varied biofilm attachment. C1018 carbon steel coupons (1.2 cm 2 top working surface) polished to 36 grit (4.06 μm roughness which is relatively rough) and 600 grit (0.13 μm) were incubated in enriched artificial seawater inoculated with highly corrosive Desulfovibrio ferrophilus IS5 at 28 ℃ for 7 d and 30 d. It was found that after 7 d of SRB incubation, 36 grit coupons had a 11% higher sessile cell count at (2.0 ± 0.17) × 10 8  cells/cm 2 , 52% higher weight loss at 22.4 ± 5.9 mg/cm 2 (1.48 ± 0.39 mm/a uniform corrosion rate), and 18% higher maximum pit depth at 53 μm compared with 600 grit coupons. However, after 30 d, the differences diminished. Electrochemical tests with transient information supported the weight loss data trends. Ginsenoside Rh2 (Rh2) is a ginseng saponin comprising a triterpene core and one unit of glucose and has attracted much attention due to its diverse biological activities. In the present study, we used small-angle X-ray diffraction, solid-state NMR, fluorescence microscopy, and MD simulations to investigate the molecular interaction of Rh2 with membrane lipids in the liquid-disordered (Ld) phase mainly composed of palmitoyloleoylphosphatidylcholine compared with those in liquid-ordered (Lo) phase mainly composed of sphingomyelin and cholesterol. The electron density profiles determined by X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that Rh2 tends to be present in the shallow interior of the bilayer in the Ld phase, while Rh2 accumulation was significantly smaller in the Lo phase. Order parameters at intermediate depths in the bilayer leaflet obtained from 2 H NMR spectra and MD simulations indicated that Rh2 reduces the order of the acyl chains of lipids in the Ld phase. The dihydroxy group and glucose moiety at both ends of the hydrophobic triterpene core of Rh2 cause tilting of the molecular axis relative to the membrane normal, which may enhance membrane permeability by loosening the packing of lipid acyl chains. The novel donor-acceptor (D-A) type covalent organic frameworks TATF-COF and TATP-COF, with multiple fluorine groups as electron storage units, were successfully constructed to achieve efficient charge transfer and photocatalytic activity for antibacterial photocatalytic therapy. Fluorine, the most electronegative element, was utilized as an electron-withdrawing substituent for the acceptor, which could unite the donor unit together and efficiently improve the charge transfer from the donor to acceptor. The unique D-A structures of TATF-COF and TATP-COF ensure that they have narrow band gaps, strong photocurrent responses, long fluorescence lifetimes, and good capacity to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to realize good antibacterial activity. Meanwhile, the inclusion of multiple hydrophilic fluorine groups means that TATF-COF and TATP-COF are highly water dispersible, which is also beneficial in terms of promoting the generation of adequate quantities of ROS. Hence, in view of their excellent photoelectric properties and good water dispersibility, further investigations were performed, and excellent antibacterial activities in vitro against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria were demonstrated for TATF-COF and TATP-COF. This study aimed to develop hydrogel dressings for wound healing composed of gum tragacanth (TG) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) loaded with Graphene oxide (GO) and Cinnamon oil (CMO) using electron beam irradiation. The impact of the preparation conditions and the incorporation of GO and CMO on the characteristic properties of the prepared CMO-(PVA/TG)-GO wound dressings was evaluated. The healing-related characteristics were assessed, including fluid absorption and retention, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), hemolytic assay, and antimicrobial potential. Wound healing efficacy was evaluated using a scratch wound healing assay. FTIR analysis verified the chemical structure, whereas scanning electron microscopy demonstrated an appropriate porosity structure necessary for optimal wound healing. The gel content increases with the initial total polymer concentration and the irradiation dose increases. Higher GO and CMO content improve the gel content and decreases swelling. Hot spots and bright patterns on plasma-facing components (PFC) in visible light are observed in electron cyclotron resonance heated (ECRH) plasmas at low densities in the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X. The events are often located far outside of any convective plasma loads and led in some cases to damages of diagnostic components, where the interaction zones qualitatively agree with fast particle loss simulations. Reciprocating electric probes indicate that this phenomenon is related to a non-thermal electron population that can have a beam like character, being directed in one parallel direction. Further, the electrons can be trapped on rational flux surfaces and be used to map magnetic islands.

The titled molecule 2-Amino-N-(2-chloro-6-methylphenyl)thiazole-5-carboxamide (ANMC) is a core of anticancer drug dasatinib (leukemia). Its derivatives exhibited bioactivity against breast cancer. Experimentally, the titled compound was described using NMR ( 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR), FTIR and UV-visible spectroscopy. The results were compared with the theoretical predictions, showing good agreement such as theoretical NH vibrations showed symmetric stretching and asymmetric stretching at 3429 and 3440 cm -1 respectively, λmax values appear at 305 nm for experimental and 307.75 nm for theoretical observations in acetone medium. Hirshfeld surface analysis well described the secondary internal and external interactions obtained like d norm and d i ranges -1.8551 to 1.4590 and 0.0918 to 2.6756 respectively. Comparing UV-visible spectra obtained in various solvents with the calculated TD-DFT results revealed minimal solvent effects. Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) map and Fukui functions were employed, which indicated reactive sites of the molecule and the obtained order of nucleophilic reactivity was C16 > C2 > C8 > Cl1 > C22 > C21. The bioactivity profile probability of ANMC was theoretically explored by calculation of electrophilicity index and drug-likeness. Molecular docking of the ANMC molecule was performed with ten receptors to obtain the best ligand-protein interaction and the minimum binding energy obtained was -8.0 kcal/mol. The environmental fate and risks of mononitrophenols (mono-NPs), the simplest nitrophenols (NPs) often found in aquatic environments, are profoundly influenced by anaerobic bioreduction and co-existing electron shuttles (ESs), but little is known about the underlying mechanisms. Here, we elucidate the pathways of anaerobic mono-NPs bioreduction by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and assess the effect of model ESs on these processes. We found that all three mono-NPs isomers could be readily reduced to their corresponding aminophenols by S. oneidensis MR-1 under anaerobic conditions. CymA, a core component of the Mtr respiratory pathway, performs a dynamic role in these bioreduction, which is highly dependent on the bioreduction kinetics. The exogenous addition of quinones was found to accelerate the mono-NPs bioreduction through interactions with key outer-membrane proteins (e.g., OmcA and MtrC), and all these processes matched well to linear free energy relationships (LFERs). Surprisingly, adding riboflavin did not influence the bioreduction of all three mono-NPs isomers, which may be due to the contribution of OmcA and MtrC to these bioreduction processes and their downregulated expression. Peroxidase-like (POD-like) as a kind of new Fenton-like catalyst can effectively activate H 2 O 2 to degrade organic pollutants in water, but improving the catalytic activity and stability of POD-like remains a challenging task. Here, we synthesized a novel dual single-atom nanoenzyme (DSAzyme) FeMn/N-CNTs with Fe-N 4 and Mn-N 4 bimetallic single-atom active centers by mimicking the active centers of natural enzymes and taking advantage of the synergistic effect between the dual metals. FeMn/N-CNTs DSAzyme showed significantly enhanced POD-like activity compared to monometallic-loaded Fe/N-CNTs and Mn/N-CNTs. Within the FeMn/N-CNTs/H 2 O 2 system, bisphenol A (BPA) could be removed 100 % within 20 min. DFT calculations show that Mn-N 4 in FeMn/N-CNTs can readily adsorb negatively charged BPA molecules and capture electrons. Meanwhile, Fe-N 4 sites can easily adsorb H 2 O 2 molecules, leading to their activation and splitting into strongly oxidizing hydroxyl radicals (·OH). Throughout this process, electrons are continuously recycled in BPA → Mn-N 4 → Fe-N 4 → H 2 O 2 , effectively promoting the regeneration of Fe 2+ . Due to its emulsifying and thickening properties, konjac glucomannan (KGM) is widely used in the food, medicine, and materials industries. Nevertheless, its high viscosity and significant water absorption limit its application range. Therefore, electron beam (e-beam) irradiation pretreatment was carried out to improve the deacetylation efficiency of KGM, and the physicochemical and gel properties of KGM were investigated. The results show that e-beam irradiation and deacetylation decrease the water absorption, solubility, transparency, molecular weight, and viscosity of KGM. Conversely, the moisture content, thermal stability, and water-binding capacity increase. FTIR and X-ray diffraction analysis revealed no significant changes in the chemical and crystalline structure of KGM before and after modification. However, modification weakens the intermolecular interaction of KGM hydrosols, which affects their rheology. Furthermore, deacetylation improves the mechanical properties and water retention capacity of KGM gels. Previous research has established a MES embedding a microbial electrode to facilitate the degradation of antibiotics in water. We modified microbial electrodes in the MES with PEDOT and rGO to enhance electron utilization on electrodes and to further promote antibiotic degradation. Density functional theory calculations on the SMX molecule indicated that the C4-S8 and S8-N27 bonds are the most susceptible to electron attack. The introduction of various functional groups and multivalent elements enhanced the electrodes' capacitance and electron mediation capabilities. This led to enhance both electron utilization on the electrodes and the removal efficiency of SMX. After 120 h, the degradation efficiency of SMX by PEDOT and rGO-modified electrodes increased by 45.47 % and 25.19 %, respectively, compared to unmodified electrodes. The relative abundance of sulfate-reducing and denitrifying bacteria significantly increased in PEDOT and rGO-modified electrodes, while the abundance of nitrifying bacteria and potential antibiotic resistance gene host microbes significantly decreased. The impact of PEDOT modification positively influenced microbial Cellular Processes, including cell growth, death, and motility. Low-viscosity hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) was obtained by electron beam irradiation, and its use as an excipient for improving the properties of spray dried pharmaceutical powders was investigated. The minimum molecular weight of HPMC which could maintain the capacity of encapsulation and powder modification was explored. As the irradiation dose was increased from 10 to 200 kGy, the molecular weight and viscosity of HPMC decreased linearly. However, its main structure and degrees of methoxy and hydroxypropyl substitution were not significantly affected. The irradiated HPMC could encapsulate particles during spray drying and, thus, modify powder properties. Furthermore, the water content of spray-dried powders with irradiated HPMC was lower than that with parent HPMC. After the spray-dried powder with irradiated HPMC was prepared into granules, their dissolution rate was also faster. However, in order to achieve high encapsulation, the molecular weight of HPMC should be ensured to be above 7.5 kDa. Design and preparation of fiber coatings with excellent electrochemical performance and high polarity is significant for efficient extraction of polar targets in electro-enhanced solid-phase microextraction (EE-SPME). In this work, a combination strategy for structure regulation of covalent organic framework (COF) was proposed to fabricate a nitrogen-rich thiocarbamide linked COF coating (Thiocarbamide-TZ-DHTP) via molecular design and post-synthetic thiocarbamide conversion. The prepared COF coating possesses a large number of O, N, and S functional groups, which not only endow the coating with higher polarity but also significantly enhance its electrochemical performance. The COF coating was used for EE-SPME of polar bisphenols (BPs), demonstrating excellent enrichment efficiency and durability. Subsequently, coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), a sensitive method was developed for determination of trace BPs. The established method possess wide linear ranges (2.0-800.0 ng L -1 ), good correlation coefficients (0.9985-0.9994) and low detection limits (0.1-2.0 ng L -1 ). Moreover, the established method had been successfully applied to detection of trace BPs in tea beverage with satisfactory recoveries (81.6 % to 118.6 %). Sulfur-based denitrification is a promising technology for efficient nitrogen removal in low-carbon wastewater, while it is easily affected by toxic substances. This study revealed the inhibitory mechanism of Cr(VI) on thiosulfate-based denitrification, including bio-toxicity and bio-electron characteristics response. The activity of nitrite reductase (NIR) was more sensitive to Cr(VI) than that of nitrate reductase (NAR), and NIR was inhibited by 21.32 % and 19.86 % under 5 and 10 mg/L Cr(VI), resulting in 10.12 and 15.62 mg/L of NO 2 - -N accumulation. The biofilm intercepted 36.57 % of chromium extracellularly by increasing 25.78 % of extracellular polymeric substances, thereby protecting microbes from bio-toxicity under 5 mg/L Cr(VI). However, it was unable to resist 20-30 mg/L of Cr(VI) bio-toxicity as 19.95 and 14.29 mg Cr/(g volatile suspended solids) invaded intracellularly, inducing the accumulation of reactive oxygen species by 165.98 % and 169.12 %, which triggered microbial oxidative-stress and damaged the cells. In terms of electron transfer, S 2 oxidation was inhibited, and parts of electrons were redirected intracellularly to maintain microbial activity, resulting in insufficient electron donors. Meanwhile, the contents of flavin adenine dinucleotide and cytochrome c decreased under 5-30 mg/L Cr(VI), reducing the electron acquisition rate of denitrification. 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) as the effective anti-cancer drug was used for the treatment of Crohn's disease and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, but the response to maintenance therapy was variable with individual differences. In order to control the dosage and decrease the side effects of 6-MP, a sensitive and stable assay was urgently needed for 6-MP monitoring. Herein, RuZn NPs with electrochemical oxidation property and oxidase-like activity was proposed for dual-mode 6-MP monitoring. Burr-like RuZn NPs were prepared and explored to not only exhibit an electrochemical oxidation signal at 0.78 V, but also displayed excellent oxidase-like performances. RuZn NPs were utilized for the dual-mode monitoring of 6-MP, attributing to the formation of Ru-SH covalent bonding. The colorimetric method showed good linearity from 10 μM to 5 mM with the limit of detection (LOD) of 300 nM, while the electrochemical method provided a higher sensitivity with the LOD of 37 nM in range from 100 nM to 200 μM. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation has been considered as an environmental-friendly and energy-efficient biological nitrogen removal (BNR) technology. Recently, new reaction pathway for ammonium oxidation under anaerobic condition had been discovered. In addition to nitrite, iron trivalent, sulfate, manganese and electrons from electrode might be potential electron acceptors for ammonium oxidation, which can be coupled to traditional BNR process for wastewater treatment. In this paper, the pathway and mechanism for ammonium oxidation with various electron acceptors under anaerobic condition is studied comprehensively, and the research progress of potentially functional microbes is summarized. The potential application of various electron acceptors for ammonium oxidation in wastewater is addressed, and the N 2 O emission during nitrogen removal is also discussed, which was important greenhouse gas for global climate change. The availability of suitable electron donors and acceptors limits micropollutant natural attenuation in oligotrophic groundwater. This study investigated how electron donors with different biodegradability (humics, dextran, acetate, and ammonium), and different oxygen concentrations affect the biodegradation of 15 micropollutants (initial concentration of each micropollutant = 50 μg/L) in simulated nitrate reducing aquifers. Tests mimicking nitrate reducing field conditions showed no micropollutant biodegradation, even with electron donor amendment. However, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and mecoprop were biodegraded under (micro)aerobic conditions with and without electron donor addition. The highest 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and mecoprop biodegradation rates and removal efficiencies were obtained under fully aerobic conditions with amendment of an easily biodegradable electron donor. Under microaerobic conditions, however, amendment with easily biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (DOC) inhibited micropollutant biodegradation due to competition between micropollutants and DOC for the limited oxygen available. Microbial community composition was dictated by electron acceptor availability and electron donor amendment, not by micropollutant biodegradation. Low microbial community richness and diversity led to the absence of biodegradation of the other 13 micropollutants (such as bentazon, chloridazon, and carbamazepine). Finally, adaptation and potential growth of biofilms interactively determined the location of the micropollutant removal zone relative to the point of amendment. Raman spectroscopy is a powerful technique for protein detection, but the calculation of Raman spectrum is a longstanding challenging problem due to the large sizes and complex structures of protein molecules. Dividing proteins into fragments can greatly accelerate the calculation, but this usually introduces large errors originating from ignored interactions between fragments into obtained spectra. In this paper, we proposed a new adaptive segmentation method based on the strength of interactions and molecular shapes and structures, i.e., electron density clustering, to divide proteins. It can reduce errors of obtained Raman spectra by about 20% compared to the uniform segmentation method without a significant increase in computational cost. The impact of dual sequential modifications using radio-frequency (RF) plasma and electron beam irradiation (EBI) on starch properties was investigated and compared with single treatments within an irradiation dose range of 5-20 kGy. Regardless of sequence, dual treatments synergistically affected starch properties, increasing acidity, solubility, and paste clarity, while decreasing rheological features with increasing irradiation dose. The molecular weight distribution was also synergistically influenced. Amylopectin distribution broadened particularly below 10 kGy. Amylose narrowed its distribution across all irradiation doses. This was due to dominating EBI-induced degradation and molecular rearrangements from RF plasma. With the highest average radiation-chemical yield (G) and degradation rate constant (k) of (2.12 ± 0.14) × 10 -6  mol·J -1 and (3.43 ± 0.23) × 10 -4  kGy -1 , respectively, upon RF plasma pre-treatment, amylose underwent random chain scission. In comparison to single treatments, dual modification caused minor alterations in spectral characteristics and crystal short-range order structure, along with increased granule aggregation and surface irregularities. The synergistic effect was dose-dependent, significant up to 10 kGy, irrespective of treatment sequence. The highest synergistic ratio was observed when RF plasma preceded irradiation, demonstrating the superior efficiency of plasma pre-treatment in combination with EBI. Environmental and human health problems caused by Pb pollution have attracted much attention, and solidification and stabilization are effective means for its remediation. Improving the ability of biochar to remediate heavy metals through modification is the focus of current biochar research. This study used calcium-alginate gel (GB) and Fe 3+ (magnetic) to encapsulate and improve sludge biochar (SB), and explored the adsorption behavior and passivation mechanism of Pb 2+ on it from outside to inside. The magnetic-biochar (MB) in magnetic-biochar-gel microspheres (MBGB) showed a homogeneous dispersion and part of the Fe ion was detached from the MB into the three-dimensional pores of the gel. The results of kinetic, isothermal and pH adsorption experiments showed that the MBGB has 108.4 % and 200 % higher Pb 2+ adsorption capacity and rate than SB and can be applied to pH 3-9. The adsorption of Pb 2+ by MBGB is a multilayer adsorption with both physical and chemical mechanisms. Mineralogical and electrochemical results demonstrate that the cross-linking of the gel with magnetic-biochar (MB) can provide a directional diffusion channel for Pb 2+ from the outside to the inside. The electron transfer rate of MBGB was significantly higher than that of SB (222.2 %) after the reaction. The dissolved cations and electrons on the MB guide Pb 2+ from the MBGB surface to the internal MB quickly via accelerating the electron transfer and migration rate between Pb 2+ and MB. Subsequently, the abundance of PO 4 3- on the MB ensures stable mineral precipitation (Pyromorphite). Moreover, four-step extraction analysis confirmed that most of Pb 2+ in MBGB was stable (36.2 % acid-soluble and 47.6 % non-bioavailable). Meanwhile, the Pb adsorption efficiency of MBGB was still >93.0 % after three cycles of adsorption-desorption. Excellent reuse performance and stability guarantee the environmental security of MBGB. Pseudomonas aeruginosa phenazines contribute to survival under microaerobic and anaerobic conditions by extracellular electron discharge to regulate cellular redox balances. This electron discharge is also attractive to be used for bioelectrochemical applications. However, elements of the respiratory pathways that interact with phenazines are not well understood. Five terminal oxidases are involved in the aerobic electron transport chain (ETC) of Pseudomonas putida and P. aeruginosa. The latter bacterium also includes four reductases that allow for denitrification. Here, we explored if phenazine-1-carboxylic acid interacts with those elements to enhance anodic electron discharge and drive bacterial growth in oxygen-limited conditions. Bioelectrochemical evaluations of terminal oxidase-deficient mutants of both Pseudomonas strains and P. aeruginosa with stimulated denitrification pathways indicated no direct beneficial interaction of phenazines with ETC elements for extracellular electron discharge. However, the single usage of the Cbb3-2 oxidase increased phenazine production, electron discharge, and cell growth. Assays with purified periplasmic cytochromes NirM and NirS indicated that pyocyanin acts as their electron donor. We conclude that phenazines play an important role in electron transfer to, between, and from terminal oxidases under oxygen-limiting conditions and their modulation might enhance EET. Acetobacter aceti is a microbe that produces corrosive organic acids, causing severe corrosion of industrial equipment. Previous studies have focused on the organic acid corrosion of A. aceti, but neglected the possibility that it has electron transfer corrosion. This study found that electron transfer and organic acids can synergistically promote the corrosion of 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS). Electrochemical measurement results showed that corrosion of 2205 DSS was more severe in the presence of A. aceti. Surface analysis indicated a thick biofilm formed on the steel surface, with low pH and dissolved oxygen concentrations under the biofilm. Background: DIA (Data-Independent Acquisition) is a powerful technique in Liquid Chromatography coupled with high-resolution tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) initially developed for proteomics studies and recently emerging in metabolomics and lipidomics. It provides a comprehensive and unbiased coverage of molecules with improved reproducibility and quantitative accuracy compared to Data-Dependent Acquisition (DDA). Combined with the Zeno trap and Electron-Activated Dissociation (EAD), DIA enhances data quality and structural elucidation compared to conventional fragmentation under CID. These tools were applied to study the lipidome and metabolome of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus fossarum, successfully discriminating stages and highlighting significant biological features. Despite being underused, DIA, along with the Zeno trap and EAD, holds great potential for advancing research in the omics field., Results: DIA combined with the Zeno trap enhances detection reproducibility compared to conventional DDA, improving fragmentation spectra quality and putative identifications. Microbial biofilms are behind microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). Sessile cells in biofilms are many times more concentrated volumetrically than planktonic cells in the bulk fluids, thus providing locally high concentrations of chemicals. More importantly, "electroactive" sessile cells in biofilms are capable of utilizing extracellularly supplied electrons (e.g., from elemental Fe) for intracellular reduction of an oxidant such as sulfate in energy metabolism. MIC directly caused by anaerobic biofilms is classified into two main types based on their mechanisms: extracellular electron transfer MIC (EET-MIC) and metabolite MIC (M-MIC). Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are notorious for their corrosivity. They can cause EET-MIC in carbon steel, but they can also secrete biogenic H 2 S to corrode other metals such as Cu directly via M-MIC. This study investigated the use of conductive magnetic nanowires as electron mediators to accelerate and thus identify EET-MIC of C1020 by Desulfovibrio vulgaris. The presence of 40 ppm (w/w) nanowires in ATCC 1249 culture medium at 37 °C resulted in 45 % higher weight loss and 57 % deeper corrosion pits after 7-day incubation. Electrochemical tests using linear polarization resistance and potentiodynamic polarization supported the weight loss data trend. These findings suggest that conductive magnetic nanowires can be employed to identify EET-MIC. Humus substances (HSs) participate in extracellular electron transfer (EET), which is unclear in heterogeneous soil. Here, a microbial electrochemical system (MES) was constructed to determine the effect of HSs, including humic acid, humin and fulvic acid, on soil electron transfer. The results showed that fulvic acid led to the optimal electron transfer efficiency in soil, as evidenced by the highest accumulated charges and removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons after 140 days, with increases of 161% and 30%, respectively, compared with those of the control. However, the performance of MES with the addition of humic acid and humin was comparable to that of the control. Fulvic acid amendment enhanced the carboxyl content and oxidative state of dissolved organic matter, endowing a better electron transfer capacity. Additionally, the presence of fulvic acid induced an increase in the abundance of electroactive bacteria and organic degraders, extracellular polymeric substances and functional enzymes such as cytochrome c and NADH synthesis, and the expression of m tr C gene, which is responsible for EET enhancement in soil. Electrogenic biofilms in bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are critical in wastewater treatment. Industrial effluents often contain cobalt (Co 2+ ); however, its impact on biofilms is unknown. This study investigated how increasing Co 2+ concentrations (0-30 mg/L) affect BES biofilm community dynamics, extracellular polymeric substances, microbial metabolism, electron transfer gene expression, and electrochemical performance. The research revealed that as Co 2+ concentrations increased, power generation progressively declined, from 345.43 ± 4.07 mW/m 2 at 0 mg/L to 160.51 ± 0.86 mW/m 2 at 30 mg/L Co 2+ . However, 5 mg/L Co 2+ had less effect. The Co 2+ removal efficiency in the reactors fed with 5 and 10 mg/L concentrations exceeded 99% and 94%, respectively. However, at 20 and 30 mg/L, the removal efficiency decreased substantially, likely because of reduced biofilm viability. FTIR indicated the participation of biofilm functional groups in Co 2+ uptake. XPS revealed Co 2+ presence in biofilms as CoO and Co(OH) 2 , indicating precipitation also aided removal. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests revealed that 5 mg/L Co 2+ had little impact on the electrocatalytic activity, while higher concentrations impaired it. Furthermore, at a concentration of 5 mg/L Co 2+ , there was an increase in the proportion of the genus Anaeromusa-Anaeroarcus, while the genus Geobacter declined at all tested Co 2+ concentrations. Additionally, higher concentrations of Co 2+ suppressed the expression of extracellular electron transfer genes but increased the expression of Co 2+ -resistance genes. The activation of peracetic acid (PAA) by activated carbon (AC) is a promising approach for reducing micropollutants in groundwater. However, to harness the PAA/AC system's potential and achieve sustainable and low-impact groundwater remediation, it is crucial to quantify the individual contributions of active species. In this study, we developed a combined degradation kinetic and adsorption mass transfer model to elucidate the roles of free radicals, electron transfer processes (ETP), and adsorption on the degradation of antibiotics by PAA in groundwater. Our findings reveal that ETP predominantly facilitated the activation of PAA by modified activated carbon (AC600), contributing to ∼61% of the overall degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The carbonyl group (CO) on the surface of AC600 was identified as a probable site for the ETP. Free radicals contributed to ∼39% of the degradation, while adsorption was negligible. Thermodynamic and activation energy analyses indicate that the degradation of SMX within the PAA/AC600 system requires a relatively low energy input (27.66 kJ/mol), which is within the lower range of various heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions, thus making it easily achievable. These novel insights enhance our understanding of the AC600-mediated PAA activation mechanism and lay the groundwork for developing efficient and sustainable technologies for mitigating groundwater pollution. When Cr(VI) and nitrate coexist, the efficiency of both bio-denitrification and Cr(VI) bio-reduction is poor because chromate hinders bacterial normal functions (i.e., electron production, transportation and consumption). Moreover, under anaerobic condition, the method about efficient nitrate and Cr(VI) removal remained unclear. In this paper, the addition of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 to promote the electron production, transportation and consumption of denitrifier and cause an increase in the removal of nitrate and Cr(VI). The efficiency of nitrate and Cr(VI) removal accomplished by P. denitrificans as a used model denitrifier increased respectively from 51.3% to 96.1% and 34.3% to 99.8% after S. oneidensis MR-1 addition. The mechanism investigations revealed that P. denitrificans provided S. oneidensis MR-1 with lactate, which was utilized to secreted riboflavin and phenazine by S. oneidensis MR-1. The riboflavin served as coenzymes of cellular reductants (i.e., thioredoxin and glutathione) in P. denitrificans, which created favorable intracellular microenvironment conditions for electron generation. Meanwhile, phenazine promoted biofilm formation, which increased the adsorption of Cr(VI) on the cell surface and accelerated the Cr(VI) reduction by membrane bound chromate reductases thereby reducing damage to other enzymes respectively. Overall, this strategy reduced the negative effect of chromate, thus improved the generation, transportation, and consumption of electrons. Ferredoxins (Fds) are small proteins which shuttle electrons to pathways like biological nitrogen fixation. Physical properties tune the reactivity of Fds with different pathways, but knowledge on how these properties can be manipulated to engineer new electron transfer pathways is lacking. Recently, we showed that an evolved strain of Rhodopseudomonas palustris uses a new electron transfer pathway for nitrogen fixation. This pathway involves a variant of the primary Fd of nitrogen fixation in R. palustris, Fer1, in which threonine at position 11 is substituted for isoleucine (Fer1 T11I ). To understand why this substitution in Fer1 enables more efficient electron transfer, we used in vivo and in vitro methods to characterize Fer1 and Fer1 T11I . Electrochemical characterization revealed both Fer1 and Fer1 T11I have similar redox transitions (-480 mV and - 550 mV), indicating the reduction potential was unaffected despite the proximity of T11 to an iron‑sulfur (FeS) cluster of Fer1. Additionally, disruption of hydrogen bonding around an FeS cluster in Fer1 by substituting threonine with alanine (T11A) or valine (T11V) did not increase nitrogenase activity, indicating that disruption of hydrogen bonding does not explain the difference in activity observed for Fer1 T11I . Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy studies revealed key differences in the electronic structure of Fer1 and Fer1 T11I , which indicate changes to the high spin states and/or spin-spin coupling between the FeS clusters of Fer1. Some methanogens are electrotrophic bio-corroding microbes that can acquire electrons from solid surfaces including metals. In the laboratory, pure cultures of methanogenic cells oxidize iron-based materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, and Fe 0 . For buried or immersed pipelines or other metallic structures, methanogens are often major components of corroding biofilms with complex interspecies relationships. Models explaining how these microbes acquire electrons from solid donors are multifaceted and include electron transfer via redox mediators such as H 2 or by direct contact through membrane proteins. Understanding the electron uptake (EU) routes employed by corroding methanogens is essential to develop efficient strategies for corrosion prevention. It is also beneficial for the development of bioenergy applications relying on methanogenic EU from solid donors such as bioelectromethanogenesis, hybrid photosynthesis, and the acceleration of anaerobic digestion with electroconductive particles. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) stands out as a promising strategy for ensuring water resource sustainability. This study delves into the comparative impact of nitrate (NO 3 - ) and oxygen (O 2 ) as electron acceptors in MAR on water quality and safety. Notably, NO 3 - , acting as an electron acceptor, has the potential to enrich denitrifying bacteria, serving as hosts for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and enriching human bacterial pathogens (HBPs) compared to O 2 . However, a direct comparison between NO 3 - and O 2 remains unexplored. This study assessed risks in MAR effluent induced by NO 3 - and O 2 , alongside the presence of the typical refractory antibiotic sulfamethoxazole. Key findings reveal that NO 3 - as an electron acceptor resulted in a 2 times reduction in dissolved organic carbon content compared to O 2 , primarily due to a decrease in soluble microbial product production. Furthermore, NO 3 - significantly enriched denitrifying bacteria, the primary hosts of major ARGs, by 747%, resulting in a 66% increase in the overall abundance of ARGs in the effluent of NO 3 - MAR compared to O 2 . This escalation was predominantly attributed to horizontal gene transfer mechanisms, as evidenced by a notable 78% increase in the relative abundance of mobile ARGs, alongside a minor 27% rise in chromosomal ARGs. Additionally, the numerous denitrifying bacteria enriched under NO 3 - influence also belong to the HBP category, resulting in a significant 114% increase in the abundance of all HBPs. The co-occurrence of ARGs and HBPs was also observed to intensify under NO 3 - influence. Recycling and high-value reutilization of waste cotton fabrics (WCFs) has attracted a widespread concern. One potential solution is to extract nanocellulose. Sulfuric acid hydrolysis is a conventional method for the production of nanocellulose with high negative charge from WCFs. However, the recycling and disposal of chemicals in nanocellulose production, along with low yields, remain significant challenges. Consequently, there is a pressing need for a sustainable method to produce nanocellulose at higher yield without the use of chemicals. Herein, we propose a green, sustainable and chemical-free method to extract nanocellulose from WCFs. The nanocellulose displayed a rod-like shape with a length of 50-300 nm, a large aspect ratio of 18.4 ± 2 and the highest yield of up to 89.9 %. The combined short-time and efficient two-step process, involving electron beam irradiation (EBI) and high-pressure homogenization (HPH), offers a simple and efficient alternative approach with a low environmental impact, to extract nanocellulose. EBI induced a noticeable degradation in WCFs and HPH exfoliated cellulose to nano-size with high uniformity via mechanical forces. The as-prepared nanocellulose exhibits excellent emulsifying ability as the Pickering emulsion emulsifier. A humic acid-gelatin (HA-Gel) hydrogel, a gallic acid-xanthan gum (GA-XG) hydrogel, a HA-Gel/GA-XG hydrogel, and superabsorbent polymer (SAP) of HA-Gel/GA-XG/polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel were synthesized using electron beam irradiation method. The capability of synthesized hydrogels in loading and controlled release of fulvic acid (FA) was studied. The chemical and physical structure of sorbents was confirmed by various analyses. The effect of irradiation dose on mechanical properties, gel percentage, swelling, and absorbency under load (AUL) of the sorbents was investigated. By changing the hydrogel structures into the SAP form, its swelling capacity was increased from 37 to 320 g/g. Both hybrid hydrogel and SAP were reusable for up to 7 cycles. The maximum fertilizer loading capacities for SAP and hybrid hydrogel were 402.1 and, 175.5 mg g -1 , respectively. In comparison to hydrogels, the SAP showed a slower FA-release performance. Thus, in soil media, 86 % of FA was released in 15-20 days from the hybrid hydrogel while with the SAP, 81 % of FA was released in 30-35 days. Excessive intake of benzaldehyde and its derivatives can cause irreversible damage to living organisms. Hence, benzaldehyde derivatives with different para-substitutions of push/pull electronic groups were chosen to investigate the effect of different substituent properties on the structure of human serum albumin (HSA). The binding constants, number of binding sites, major interaction forces, protein structural changes, and binding sites of benzaldehyde (BzH) and its derivatives (4-BzHD) with HSA in serum proteins were obtained based on multispectral and molecular docking techniques. The mechanism of BzH/4-BzHD interaction on HSA is mainly static quenching and is accompanied by the formation of a ground state complex. BzH/4-BzHD is bound to HSA in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. The interaction forces for the binding of BzH/4-BzHD to HSA are mainly hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction, which are also accompanied by a small amount of electrostatic interactions. The effect of BzH/4-BzHD on HSA conformation follows: 4-Diethylaminobenzaldehyde (4-DBzH) > 4-Nitrobenzaldehyde (4-NBzH) > 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde (4-HBzH) > 4-Acetaminobenzaldehyde (4-ABzH) > BzH, which means that the stronger push/pull electronic strength of the para-substituted benzaldehyde derivatives has a greater effect on HSA conformation. Furthermore, the concentration-lethality curves of different concentrations for BzH/4-BzHD on zebrafish verified above conclusion. Background: The use of simple and hybrid fragmentation techniques for the identification of molecules in tandem mass spectrometry provides different and complementary information on the structure of molecules. Nevertheless, these techniques have not been as widely explored for oligonucleotides as for peptides or proteins. The analysis of microRNAs (miRNAs) warrants special attention, given their regulatory role and their relationship with several diseases. The application of different fragmentation techniques will be very interesting for their identification., Results: Four synthetic miRNAs and a DNA sequence were fragmented in an ESI-FT-ICR mass spectrometer using both simple and hybrid fragmentation techniques: CID, nETD followed by CID, IRMPD, and, for the first time, nETD in combination with IRMPD. The main fragmentation channel was base loss. The use of nETD-IRMPD resulted in d/z, a/w, and c/y ions at higher intensities. Moreover, nETD-IRMPD provided high sequence coverage and low internal fragmentation. Native MS analysis revealed that only miR159 and the DNA sequence formed stable dimers under physiological ionic strength. The use of organic co-solvents or additives resulted in a lower sequence coverage due to lesser overall ionization efficiency., Novelty: This work demonstrates that the combination of nETD and IRMPD for miRNA fragmentation constitutes a suitable alternative to common fragmentation methods. The fabrication of all-solid-state Z-scheme sonophotocatalysts is vital for improving the transfer rate of photogenerated electrons to remove antibiotics present in wastewater. Herein, a novel indirect Z-scheme ZnFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 5 ) heterojunction was synthesized using a simple strategy. The ZnFe-LDH/rGO/g-C 3 N 5 (ZF@rGCN) ternary composites were systematically characterized using different techniques. Results revealed that the 15%ZF@rGCN catalyst achieved a ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation efficiency of 95% via the synergistic effect of sonocatalysis and photocatalysis. The improved sonophotocatalytic performance of the ZF@rGCN heterojunction was attributed to an increase in the number of active sites, a Z-scheme charge-transfer channel in ZF@rGCN, and an extended visible light response range. The introduction of rGO further enhanced the charge-transfer rate and preserved the reductive and oxidative sites of the ZF@rGCN system, thereby affording additional reactive species to participate in CIP removal. In addition, owing to its unique properties, rGO possibly increased the absorption of incident light and served as an electronic bridge in the as-formed ZF@rGCN catalyst. Finally, the possible CIP degradation pathways and the sonophotocatalytic Z-scheme charge-migration route of ZF@rGCN were proposed.
