1. TREATMENT OF A PHENOLIC WASTEWATER IN A SEQUENCING BATCH REACTOR

Experiments were conducted to investigate the treatment efficiency of a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for treating a synthetic phenolic wastewater at the conditions of various influent organic loadings and various aerated strategies during fill period of an SBR cycle. Additionally, a kinetic study was performed in order to realize the fact of substrate utilization and microorganism growth in the SBR. Experimental results indicated that excellent treatment efficiency was obtainable at the volumetric organic loading in the range of 0.15 to 0.74 Kg COD/M3-day. No matter whether the fill was aerated or not, greater than 90% COD and 99% phenol removal ratios were achieved. Also, excellent sludge settling property was observed in the study. In addition, a simple Monod kinetic model proved to be adequate in predicting reactor performance.
