ABSTRACT: In a previous study, we demonstrated that a 15% feed restriction (FR) during the first 2 wk after hatch could improve gait in Pekin meat ducks, but did result in reduced breast mass. We hypothesized that feed restriction after day 5 following muscle satellite cell development would allow the full growth of the breast meat. To accomplish this goal, 300 1-day-old ducklings (Maple Leaf Farms Inc.) were randomly allocated to 1 of the 3 groups (n = 4 pens, 25 ducks per pen): (1) Control group fed to ad libitum; (2) 85% daily feed intake from days 1 to 14 (FR 85% 1–14); 85% daily feed intake from days 5 to 14 (FR 85% 5–14). All ducks were vaccinated with inactivated Salmonella enteritidis on day 14 and boosted on day 26. The FR 85% 5–14 did show similar production standards to controls, and improved gait characteristics (P < 0.05). To determine if the partial feed restriction would have an impact on intestinal epithelial tight junction integrity, we treated ducks on days 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 with 8.32 mg/kg FITC-d in water per os and blood samples were obtained via the tibial vein 1 h later. Serum samples were analyzed for presence and quantification of FITC-d. Feed restriction elicited a significant increase in FITC-d permeability at all points of evaluation. Anti-S. enteritidis specific IgY responses were assessed by ELISA from serum collected at 14 D, 28 D, and 35 D. Although all ducks showed an increase humoral immune response to the S. enteritidis, both feed restricted groups showed reduced IgY production compared to ad lib controls. Our data suggest that although the FR 5–14 feed restriction paradigm may reduce gait abnormalities without affecting production rates, some challenges exist due to increased gut leakiness or decreased acquired immune activity. Future studies will look at altering the feed restriction milieu to ameliorate these challenges.

SUMMARY: Like other poultry species, Pekin ducks may develop gait abnormalities due to increased muscle growth relative to the skeletal system. Previous studies have shown that Pekin leg bones grow exponentially in terms of mineral deposition during the first 2 wk of life. Therefore, we hypothesized that a slight food restriction (FR) during that time would reduce muscle mass development sufficiently to allow the skeletal system to more fully develop. Our primary goal was to determine if FR could occur without increasing the time to market weight. To obtain this goal, ducks were provided either 65% (FR65) or 85% (FR85) of the control ducks daily feed intake. Food restricted ducks had lower (P < 0.05) body weights than controls at days 7 and 14. After day 14, when all ducks were fed ad libitum (ad libitum), food restricted ducks ate significantly (P < 0.01) more feed per day than control ducks and subsequently gained body weight at an increased rate. By day 35 there were no significant differences in body weight between FR85 and controls, however both FR groups showed reduced (P < 0.05) breast mass compared to controls. Qualitative assessment of gait also suggested that FR ducks had more uniform leg conformation and gait then did the control ducks and did not show any biological signs of reduced welfare. These data suggest that a slight FR is possible without adding time to market and this paradigm might reduce the occurrence of lameness in growing ducks.

ABSTRACT: By some accounts, ducks were domesticated between 400 and 10,000 yr ago and have been a growing portion of the poultry industry for decades. Ducks specifically, and waterfowl in general, have unique health, housing, nutrition and welfare concerns compared to their galliform counterparts. Although there have been many research publications in regards to health, nutrition, behavior, and welfare of ducks there have been very few reviews to provide an overview of these numerous studies, and only one text has attempted to review all aspects of the duck industry, from breeders to meat ducks. This review covers incubation, hatching, housing, welfare, nutrition, and euthanasia and highlights the needs for additional research at all levels of duck production. The purpose of this review is to provide guidelines to raise and house ducks for research as specifically related to industry practices.

Iron-based catalysts are the most suitable candidates for converting CO2 or CO2-rich syngas to hydrocarbons. However, several issues about the mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation are still unclear. In this work, we investigated the performance of an iron-based catalyst with H2/CO2, H2/CO/N2 and H2/CO/13CO2/N2 gas mixtures at the same process conditions (T = 270°C, P = 175 psi and SV = 3 NL/h/gcat). The CO2 hydrogenation rate was much lower than that observed for CO hydrogenation. 13CO2 tracer experiments indicated that CO2 is hydrogenated to hydrocarbons via the reverse water-gas shift even when present in small concentration (1.8 vol%). 13C enrichment was observed in both CO and C1-C4 hydrocarbons.

Treatment for Hodgkin (HL) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) has changed dramatically in the last fifty years. While there are increasing numbers of long-term survivors, there has been increasing recognition of the long-term toxicities of treatments, particularly therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia (t-MDS/AML). The survival for t-MDS/AML is extremely poor. Multiple heterogeneous retrospective studies have reported risk factors for the development of t-MDS/AML. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy have been most closely examined as possible t-MDS/AML risk factors. In this paper, we will review the risks of t-MDS/AML for HL and NHL patients as reported in the literature and assess for any changes over time. In HL patients, the incidence of t-MDS/AML has decreased with a reduction in alkylating agents. In indolent NHL patients, we anticipate decreased incidence of t-MDS/AML as targeted therapies begin to replace cytotoxic chemotherapy., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

Background: The proteasome inhibitor bortezomib has demonstrated marked preclinical activity when combined with the histone deacetylase inhibitor vorinostat in leukemia, multiple myeloma, and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) cells. The present study evaluated the efficacy and safety of the combination in patients with relapsed or refractory MCL and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL)., Patients and Methods: The present multicenter, nonrandomized phase II trial used a Simon 2-stage design with 3 cohorts: cohort A, MCL with no previous bortezomib (including untreated MCL); cohort B, MCL with previous bortezomib; and cohort C, relapsed or refractory DLBCL with no previous bortezomib. Vorinostat (400 mg) was administered orally on days 1 to 5 and 8 to 12 before bortezomib (1.3 mg/m 2 ), which was administered intravenously on days 1, 4, 8, and 11 of each 21-day cycle., Results: For the 65 treated patients (22 in cohort A, 4 in cohort B, and 39 in cohort C), the overall response rate was 31.8%, 0%, and 7.7%, respectively. The median progression-free survival was 7.6 months for cohort A and 1.8 months for cohort C. In cohort A, 7 patients had a partial response (PRs), 5 had stable disease (SD), 7 had progressive disease (PD), 1 was not assessed, and 2 were not evaluable. In cohort B, 2 had SD and 2 had PD. In cohort C, 3 had a PR, 8 had SD, 23 had PD, and 5 were not assessed. Baseline NF-κB activation, measured as nuclear RelA by immunohistochemistry, did not correlate with clinical response., Conclusion: The combination of bortezomib and vorinostat is safe and has modest activity in MCL and limited activity in DLBCL., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remains a challenge to both patients and clinicians. Despite improvements in our understanding of the disease, treatment has changed minimally and outcomes remain poor for the majority of patients. Within the last decade, there have been an increasing number of potential targets and pathways identified for development in AML. The classes of agents described in this review include but are not limited to epigenetic modifiers such as IDH inhibitors, BET inhibitors, and HDAC inhibitors as well as cell cycle and signaling inhibitors such as Aurora kinase inhibitors and CDK inhibitors. While the developments are encouraging, it is unlikely that targeting a single pathway will result in long-term disease control. This case report describes the treatment of a 33-year-old white man who had a skeletal Class III and dental Class II subdivision malocclusion caused by a retrognathic maxilla, with severe maxillary crowding, a highly placed maxillary left canine, mild mandibular crowding, and a bilateral posterior crossbite. Treatment was performed with a modified surgery-first approach, which included a short presurgical alignment phase for the correction of the significant maxillary crowding while controlling the incisal angulation, followed by LeFort I maxillary advancement surgery. The short presurgical orthodontic phase aimed at eliminating the anterior dental interferences before the maxillary advancement, and the use of the inherent increased bone turnover in the postsurgical phase helped to reduce the total orthodontic treatment time to 12 months. Virtual 3-dimensional planning in orthognathic surgery allows for a detailed visualization and analysis of skeletal and dental deformities, especially in patients with asymmetries. This approach also eliminates conventional stone model surgery through computer-aided fabrication of surgical stents. This article presents a new approach with 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography-based treatment planning for the surgical correction of facial asymmetry in conjunction with the surgery first approach. Good esthetic and occlusal outcomes were obtained for 2 patients after orthognathic surgery and orthodontic treatment with a short total treatment time., (Copyright © 2013 American Association of Orthodontists. This case report describes the treatment of a 16-year-old girl with a unilateral posterior buccal crossbite, a unilateral Class II molar relationship, and a maxillary right canine high in the labial sulcus. The treatment plan included surgically assisted unilateral maxillary expansion for the correction of the buccal crossbite, with simultaneous dentoalveolar distraction of the maxillary right canine into the extraction space of the first premolar aided by skeletal anchorage. Reduced orthodontic treatment time was facilitated by these 2 surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to characterize antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), recovered from raw retail meat products purchased in the Washington, D.C., area. From March to August 2008, 694 samples of ground beef (n = 198), ground pork (n = 300), and ground turkey (n = 196) were collected by random sampling from stores of three grocery chains. In total, 200 S. aureus isolates (29%) were recovered by direct plating. When tested for susceptibility to 22 antimicrobials, 69% of the S. aureus isolates were resistant to tetracycline, 26% to penicillin, 17% to ampicillin, 13% to methicillin, 8% to erythromycin, 4.5% to clindamycin, 1.5% to gentamicin, and 0.5% to chloramphenicol, oxacillin, cefoxitin, or quinupristin-dalfopristin. However, 27% of the isolates were susceptible to all tested antimicrobials. More turkey and pork isolates were resistant to ampicillin, penicillin, and tetracycline than were beef isolates (P < 0.05). Additionally, 17% of the turkey and 17% of the pork isolates were resistant to methicillin (MIC ≥ 16 μg/ml), whereas no beef isolates were resistant to the antimicrobial agent. A single MRSA (methicillin MIC > 32 μg/ml) isolate containing the mecA gene with additional resistance to erythromycin, clindamycin, oxacillin plus 2% NaCl, cefoxitin, ampicillin, penicillin, quinupristin-dalfopristin, tetracycline, and gentamicin was recovered from one pork sample. The presence of antimicrobial-resistant S. aureus, coupled with the relative lack of such studies in the United States, suggests that further investigations on MRSA in the food supply are needed despite the low rate of MRSA found in this particular study.

Implant site development through orthodontic extrusion can regenerate hard and soft tissue volumes lost to periodontal disease. This extrusive procedure is indicated especially when a maxillary incisor is severely compromised and the esthetic demands are high. This article describes a novel approach to alveolar bone development that enhanced the volume of the implant site. The technique involves tipping the maxillary incisor in the direction of the angular defect to increase alveolar bone volume in the implant site; simultaneous improvement of the interproximal papillary height can also be expected. A batch separation procedure has been developed for retrieval of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha from the microliter volumes of fluid isolated from the human temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Paramagnetic beads coated with monoclonal antibodies for TNF were used. The beads, and bound TNF, were recovered from solution with the aid of a magnetic field. The amount of bead-bound TNF was quantified using an immuno-based assay developed in this laboratory called the cluster assay. The cluster assay was specific for TNF and linear up to 10 ng. Using these methods we found that TMJ fluid contained 0.2-4.2 ng per 100 microliters of fluid with a mean value of 1.9 ng and a standard deviation of 1.1 ng. This study demonstrates the utility of batch immunomagnetic separation for the concentration and purification of proteins, and the cluster assay for quantification of proteins from microliter volumes of body fluids.
