The prior distribution of values for a specific feature can be categorized as long- or short-term priors based on their respective learning durations. Studies have demonstrated that the visual system can integrate both priors through weighted averaging and then utilize the integrated prior to efficiently encode stimuli. It is unclear what determines the two priors' relative weights. To address this question, we arranged the orientations according to three distributions: natural, anti-natural, and natural with increased-amplitude distributions. The natural distribution mirrors the distribution of orientations in the natural world, so it does not conflict with the long-term prior; according to the Kullback-Leibler divergence analysis, the natural distribution had a higher conflict with the anti-natural distribution than with the natural distribution with increased amplitude. It was found that the cardinal bias - the orientation estimates are biased away from the cardinal orientations - was strongest in the natural distribution with increased amplitude but weakest in the anti-natural distribution. These results were accurately predicted by an efficient Bayesian observer model in which the prior is the weighted integration of the long- and short-term priors. Importantly, the weight of the short-term prior in the new prior decreased as the level of the conflict between the long- and short-term priors increased. Therefore, this study reveals that the visual system integrates the long- and short-term priors through weighted averaging, with the conflicting level between the two priors determining their relative weights in the integration prior. Background: The hospital environment is a complex and unpredictable workplace where different providers share the responsibility of patient care. Differences in opinions, values, and experiences between resident physicians and other care team members may trigger conflicts that affect the safety and quality of patient care. Thus, developing conflict competencies may help to negotiate the complexities of different conflict situations and resolve these conflicts. However, the extent of the knowledge and perception of conflict competence among resident physicians remains to be determined., Methods: A survey and qualitative semi-structured interviews of resident physicians were conducted. Participants were recruited voluntarily. Survey results were analyzed using SPSS 21, and MAXQDA 24 was used to evaluate the interview transcripts with thematic analysis., Results: Sixty-five resident physicians completed the survey, and 15 resident physicians were interviewed. 61.5% of the survey respondents identified as female, 76.9% were Caucasian, 35.4% of the respondents were from surgical specialties, and 43.1% of the residents were in their second year of training. 53.8% of the participants reported witnessing or experiencing conflicts weekly, with 44.6% reporting resident physician-nurse conflicts. 63.1% of the conflicts were reported as unresolved, with 16.9% reporting that the conflict affected future working relationships, 25.5% of the conflicts were due to failure of communication, 75.4%residents did not have any form of prior training on conflict management, and 83.1% of them reported interest in conflict competence training. Conflicts mainly affected the quality of care (87.3%) compared to patient safety concerns (12.3%). Participants with prior training in conflict competence were more likely to resolve their reported conflict (p = 0.047). The interviews highlighted 5 main themes: sources of conflict, awareness of conflict resolution styles, addressing conflict and outcomes, and the effect on patient care. Sources of conflict included hierarchy and different priorities. 52.2% of the respondents did not know any style of conflict resolution. Addressing conflict included collaboration, avoidance, competition, and prevention. Avoidance was the most common style used by interviewees, followed by collaboration. While most felt that the conflicts affected the quality of patient care, 1 interviewee reported severe adverse events on the patient., Conclusion: Conflicts are rife in the hospital environment and can affect patient care when unresolved. Resident physicians' knowledge of conflict competence is low and does not reflect the complexity of their working environment. Background and Objectives: Clinical practice reveals that individuals with autism characterized by the absence of cognitive impairment (High Functioning Autism-HFA) show difficulty in sharing attention with unfamiliar people. We hypothesized that this difficulty could affect cognitive control by selectively impairing stimulus-encoding or response-selection., Methods: Twenty-one HFA and 23 neurotypical adults were involved in a two-phase study. The first phase was performed at home, through an online link; the second one was held four months later in our laboratory in the presence of two experimenters. A letter-flanker task was administered in both phases. In the Stimulus-Response (SR) conflict condition, the target and flankers were assigned to the same/different response keys. In the Stimulus-Stimulus (SS) conflict condition, the target and flankers were perceptually similar/dissimilar. Two mixed-ANOVAs were conducted on response times and accuracy with Phases (Home vs Lab), Groups (HFA, Neurotypical), SR conditions (congruent, incongruent, neutral) and SS conditions (congruent, incongruent) as factors., Results: Results show that only HFAs' inhibition ability was negatively affected by the experimenters' presence compared to when they were alone, by reducing accuracy when dealing with an SS conflict., Limitations: The differences between the home-phase and lab-phase sessions require further elaboration to understanding the nature of social interaction during the lab session., Conclusions: These results suggest that, for HFA, the "at home" context, free from social and emotional pressure, allowed them to emphasize their detail-focused cognitive style., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024. Conflicts arising from human-wildlife interactions (HWIs) pose a significant challenge in communities neighboring Nyerere National Park. To achieve long-term conservation success, it is critical to understand and resolve complex social conflicts. Currently, most attention is focused on addressing dispute-related conflicts, whereas underlying, and identity-based conflicts are understudied, resulting in inadequate information in literature regarding underlying and identity-based conflicts that drive social conflicts. Through the use of the Conservation Conflict Transformation Model (CCT), this study aimed to identify existing conflicts across three levels of conflict and assess current intervention strategies employed within the study area. Based on data collected from 324 respondents through questionnaire surveys, the study revealed that the dispute level of conflicts was lower than the underlying and identity-based levels of conflicts, emphasizing the limited scope of addressing conflicts solely at the dispute level within the context of conflicts arising from HWIs. To alleviate conflicts at the dispute level, respondents employed both lethal and non-lethal control techniques, with a preference for non-lethal methods. Additionally, socio-demographic factors including age, gender, household size, respondent's attitude towards wildlife, and residence significantly influenced the implementation of intervention strategies (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the findings revealed that respondents faced several challenges, including a lengthy incident reporting process for conflicts arising from HWIs, lack of consolation payment for damages, exclusionary practices, and lack of transparency in seeking assistance from local, wildlife, and government authorities. Overall, the study recommends adopting and implementing a holistic approach aligned with the CCT model to effectively address conflicts under HWIs. Self-control is essential for outcomes in several life domains but is often seen as effortful. We discuss recent research indicating the possibility of effortless self-control. First, we discuss how high levels of self-control are associated with quicker self-control conflict identification and resolution. Second, we describe two pathways that may lead to these associations: (1) How automatization of behaviors plays a role in self-control outcomes. That is, self-control is associated with better, effortless habits. (2) We discuss that self-control conflicts can be anticipated and resolved with strategies that avoid effortful inhibition. Objective: To assess the psychometric properties, i.e., reliability and construct validity of the 16-item Decisional Conflict Scale (DCS) and sub-scales in women with perinatal depressive symptoms in Norway and Portugal., Methods: We included 415 women in Portugal and 163 in Norway (≥18 years) who were pregnant or had given birth in the last 12 months and presenting with active depressive symptoms. Women replied to the original DCS items. We conducted confirmatory factor analysis, estimated internal consistency reliability, and examined factorial invariance across country, perinatal status, and treatment uptake., Results: The DCS factor model had good fit to the data, with all items loading significantly on their respective factor (.585 to .958). There was configural invariance of the DCS across countries, treatment, and perinatal status. The Stroop Task is a well-known neuropsychological task developed to investigate conflict processing in the human brain. Our group has utilized direct intracranial neural recordings in various brain regions during performance of a modified color-word Stroop Task to gain a mechanistic understanding of non-emotional human conflict processing. The purpose of this review article is to: 1) synthesize our own studies into a model of human conflict processing, 2) review the current literature on the Stroop Task and other conflict tasks to put our research in context, and 3) describe how these studies define a network in conflict processing. The figures presented are reprinted from our prior publications and key publications referenced in the manuscript. We summarize all studies to date that employ invasive intracranial recordings in humans during performance of conflict-inducing tasks. For our own studies, we analyzed local field potentials (LFPs) from patients with implanted stereotactic electroencephalography (SEEG) electrodes, and we observed intracortical oscillation patterns as well as intercortical temporal relationships in the hippocampus, amygdala, and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) during the cue-processing phase of a modified Stroop Task. Objective: To explore the relationship between personal characteristics of older adults with multiple chronic conditions (MCCs) and perceived shared decision making (SDM) resp. decisional conflict., Methods: In a video-observational study (N = 213) data were collected on personal characteristics. The main outcomes were perceived level of SDM and decisional conflict. The mediating variable was participation in the SDM process. A twostep mixed effect multilinear regression and a mediation analysis were performed to analyze the data., Results: The mean age of the patients was 77.3 years and 56.3% were female. Health literacy (β.01, p < .001) was significantly associated with participation in the SDM process. Education (β = -2.43, p = .05) and anxiety (β = -.26, p = .058) had a marginally significant direct effect on the patients' perceived level of SDM. Education (β = 12.12, p = .002), health literacy (β = -.70, p = .005) and anxiety (β = 1.19, p = .004) had a significant direct effect on decisional conflict. The effect of health literacy on decisional conflict was mediated by participation in SDM., Conclusion: Health literacy, anxiety and education are associated with decisional conflict. In this work, we propose that humor violates norms that can build consensus or escalate conflict in negotiations. Drawing on social identity theory, we propose that humor commits norm violations that are more likely to be perceived as benign among ingroup observers in negotiations, but perceived as offensive to outgroup observers in negotiations. We introduce the Comedy, Consensus, and Conflict Framework to shed light on the interpersonal effect of humor on negotiations. When humor is expressed to an ingroup observer, relative to neutral communication, humor is more likely to violate weak norms that govern social group membership resulting in the violation as being perceived as benign, which promotes cooperative behaviors in negotiations such as concessions and collaborative problem-solving. By contrast, when humor is expressed to an outgroup observer, relative to neutral communication, humor is more likely to violate strong norms that define social group membership resulting in the violation as being interpreted as offensive, which triggers competitive behaviors in negotiations such as aggressive offers and hardened positions. Furthermore, we suggest that humor not only generates appraisals of social identity threats, but also affective responses that influence negotiation behavior. Conflict adaptation can be expressed as greater performance (shorter response time and lower error rate) after incongruent trials when compared to congruent trials. It has been observed in designs that minimize confounding factors, i.e., feature integration, contingency learning, and temporal learning. Our current study aimed to further elucidate the temporal evolution mechanisms of conflict adaptation. To address this issue, the current study employed a combination of behavioral, univariate, and multivariate analysis (MVPA) methods in a modified color-word Stroop task, where half of the trials required button presses (DO trials), and the other half only required observation (LOOK trials). Both behavioral and the ERP results (N450 and SP) in the LOOK-DO transition trials revealed significant conflict adaptation without feature integration, contingency learning, and temporal learning, providing support for the conflict monitoring theory. Furthermore, during the LOOK trials, significant Stroop effect in the N450 and SP components were observed, indicating that conflict monitoring occurred at the stimulus level and triggered reactive control adjustments. The MVPA results decoded the congruent-incongruent and incongruent-incongruent conditions during the conflict adjustment phase but not during the conflict monitoring phase, emphasizing the unique contribution of conflict adjustment to conflict adaptation. Context/objectives: The scarce research on factors associated with surrogate decisional regret overlooks longitudinal, heterogenous decisional-regret experiences and fractionally examines factors from the three decision-process framework stages: decision antecedents, decision-making process, and decision outcomes. This study aimed to fill these knowledge gaps by focusing on factors modifiable by high-quality end-of-life (EOL) care., Methods: This observational study used a prior cohort of 377 family surrogates of terminal-cancer patients to examine factors associated with their membership in the four preidentified distinct decisional-regret trajectories: resilient, delayed-recovery, late-emerging, and increasing-prolonged trajectories from EOL-care decision making through the first two bereavement years by multinomial logistic regression modeling using the resilient trajectory as reference., Results: Decision antecedent factors: Financial sufficiency and heavier caregiving burden increased odds for the delayed-recovery trajectory. Spousal loss, higher perceived social support during an EOL-care decision, and more postloss depressive symptoms increased odds for the late-emerging trajectory. More pre- and postloss depressive symptoms increased odds for the increasing-prolonged trajectory. Decision-making process factors: Making an anticancer treatment decision and higher decision conflict increased odds for the delayed-recovery and increasing-prolonged trajectories. Making a life-sustaining-treatment decision increased membership in the three more profound trajectories. Decision outcome factors: Greater surrogate appraisal of quality of dying and death lowered odds for the three more profound trajectories. Patient receipt of anticancer or life-sustaining treatments increased odds for the late-emerging trajectory., Conclusion: Surrogate membership in decisional-regret trajectories was associated with decision antecedent, decision-making process, and decision outcome factors. In conflict tasks, such as the Simon, Eriksen flanker, or Stroop task, the congruency effect is often reduced after an incongruent compared to a congruent trial: the congruency sequence effect (CSE). It was suggested that the CSE may reflect increased processing of task-relevant information and/or suppression of task-irrelevant information after experiencing an incongruent relative to a congruent trial. In the present study, we contribute to this discussion by applying the Diffusion Model for Conflict tasks (DMC) framework in the context of CSEs to flanker and Simon tasks. We argue that DMC independently models the task-relevant and task-irrelevant information and thus is a first good candidate for disentangling their unique contributions. As a first approach, we fitted DMC conjointly or separately to previously congruent or incongruent trials, using four empirical flanker and two Simon data sets. For the flanker task, we fitted the classical DMC version. For the Simon task, we fitted a generalized DMC version which allows the task-irrelevant information to undershoot when swinging back to zero. After considering the model fits, we present a second approach, where we implemented a cognitive control mechanism to simulate the influence of increased processing of task-relevant information or increased suppression of task-irrelevant information. Both approaches demonstrate that the suppression of task-irrelevant information is essential to create the typical CSE pattern. Objective: Coherence between the hippocampus and other brain structures has been shown with the theta frequency (3-8 Hz). Cortical decreases in theta coherence are believed to reflect response accuracy efficiency. However, the role of theta coherence during conflict resolution is poorly understood in noncortical areas. In this study, coherence between the hippocampus and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) was measured during a conflict resolution task. Although both brain areas have been previously implicated in the Stroop task, their interactions are not well understood., Methods: Nine patients were implanted with stereotactic electroencephalography contacts in the hippocampus and OFC. Local field potential data were sampled throughout discrete phases of a Stroop task. Coherence was calculated for hippocampal and OFC contact pairs, and coherence spectrograms were constructed for congruent and incongruent conditions. Coherence changes during cue processing were identified using a nonparametric cluster-permutation t test. Group analysis was conducted to compare overall theta coherence changes among conditions., Results: In 6 of 9 patients, decreased theta coherence was observed only during the incongruent condition (P < 0.05). Congruent theta coherence did not change from baseline. Group analysis showed lower theta coherence for the incongruent condition compared with the congruent condition (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Theta coherence between the hippocampus and OFC decreased during conflict. This finding supports existing theories that theta coherence desynchronization contributes to improved response accuracy and processing efficiency during conflict resolution. Introduction: Physician burnout has been linked to medical errors, decreased patient satisfaction, and decreased career longevity. In light of the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular disease, vascular surgeon burnout presents a legitimate public health concern owing to the impact on the adequacy of the vascular surgery workforce. The aims of this study were to define the prevalence of burnout among practicing vascular surgeons and identify factors that contribute to burnout to facilitate future Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) initiatives to mitigate this crisis., Methods: In 2018, active SVS members were surveyed electronically and confidentially using the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The survey was tailored to explore specialty-specific issues, and to capture demographic and practice-related characteristics. Emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization (DP) were analyzed as dimensions of burnout. Consistent with convention, surgeons with a high score on the DP and/or EE subscales of the Maslach Burnout Inventory were considered to have at least one manifestation of professional burnout. Risk factors associated with symptoms of burnout were identified using bivariate analyses (χ 2 , Kruskal-Wallis). Multivariate logistic regression models were developed to identify independent risk factors for burnout., Results: Of 2905 active SVS members, 960 responded to the survey (34% participation rate). After excluding retired surgeons and incomplete submissions, responses from 872 practicing vascular surgeons were analyzed. The mean age was 49.7 ± 11.0 years; the majority of respondents (81%) were male. Primary practice settings were academic (40%), community practice (41%), veteran's hospital (3.3%), active military practice (1.5%), or other. Years in practice averaged 15.7 ± 11.7. Overall, 41% of respondents had at least one symptoms of burnout (ie, high EE and/or high DP), 37% endorsed symptoms of depression in the past month, and 8% indicated they had considered suicide in the last 12 months. In unadjusted analysis, factors significantly associated with burnout (P < .05) included clinical work hours, on-call frequency, electronic medical record and documentation requirements, work-home conflict, and work-related physical pain. On multivariate analysis, age, work-related physical pain and work-home conflict were independent predictors for burnout., Conclusions: Symptoms of burnout and depression are common among vascular surgeons. Advancing age, work-related physical pain, and work-home conflict are independent predictors for burnout among vascular surgeons. Cognitive control enables goal-oriented adaptation to a fast-changing environment and has a protracted development spanning into young adulthood. The neurocognitive processes underlying this development are poorly understood. In a cross-sectional sample of participants 8-19 years old (n = 108), we used blind source separation of EEG data recorded in a Flanker task to derive electrophysiological measures of attention and conflict processing, including a N2-like frontal negative component and a P3-like parietal positive component. Outside the recording session, we examined multiple behavioral measures of interference control derived from the Flanker, Stroop, and Anti-saccade tasks. We found a positive association between age and P3 amplitude, but no relationship between age and N2 amplitude. A stronger N2 was age-independently related to better performance on Stroop and Anti-saccade measures of interference control. A Gratton effect was found on the Flanker task, with slower reaction times on current congruent and better accuracy on current incongruent trials when preceded by incongruent as opposed to congruent trials. The Gratton effect on accuracy was positively associated with age. Together, the findings suggest a multifaceted developmental pattern of the neurocognitive processes involved in conflict processing across adolescence, with a more protracted development of the P3 compared to the N2., (Copyright © 2021. Objective: Informed consent is an essential principle of high-quality health care. A core component of surgical informed consent is patient comprehension of basic information such as the diagnosis, risks, benefits, and alternatives of the proposed surgery. We sought to assess informed consent among vascular surgery patients and the association between frailty, education, decisional conflict, and patient comprehension., Methods: We tested patient comprehension of basic information required for informed consent with a procedure-specific questionnaire in 102 consecutive patients undergoing selected vascular surgery procedures. Two patients who underwent open aortic aneurysm repair were excluded because of small sample size. All patients underwent assessment using the decisional conflict scale and the Frail/Nondisabled questionnaire. Analyses were performed to determine relationships between being informed and frailty, education level, and decisional conflict score. Patients included in this cohort had a median age of 71 years, and 25%, 14%, 28%, and 33% underwent carotid endarterectomy, endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, dialysis access creation, and percutaneous lower extremity procedures., Results: Overall, 14% of patients were classified as "informed" and correctly answered all questions. Procedure type (P = .001), consent obtained by the attending surgeon vs a trainee (P = .04), and frailty score (P = .005) were all associated with whether a patient was informed or not. However, after multivariable adjustment, only frailty score was independently associated with being informed (odds ratio, 0.54; 95% confidence interval, 0.30-0.95; P = .03). The median decisional conflict scale score was 7.8, suggesting that patients feel well informed and supported in spite of poor understanding of procedural indications, risks, benefits, and alternatives., Conclusions: As a group, patients have a poor comprehension of basic information related to surgical informed consent. Oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer (OPSCC) is now the most common site of head and neck squamous cell cancer. Despite the focus on treatment deintensification in clinical trials, little is known about the preferences, experiences and needs of patients with OPSCC when deciding between surgery and radiation therapy as primary treatment with curative intent. In this qualitative study, pre-treatment and post-treatment oropharyngeal cancer patients were recruited to take part in one-on-one interviews (n = 11 pre-treatment) and focus group discussions (n = 15 post-treatment) about treatment decision-making. Recordings were transcribed and assessed for emergent themes using framework analysis. From the one-on-one interviews and focus group discussions with OPSCC patients, fourteen themes were identified. Participants expressed alarm at diagnosis, decisional conflict, and a variety of roles in decision-making (physician-controlled, shared, and autonomous). Decisions were driven by the perceived recommendation of the treatment team, a desire for physical (surgical) tumor removal, fear of adverse effects of treatment, and patient-specific values. Although participants felt well-informed by their treating physicians, they identified a need for additional patient-centered information. Participants were critical of the poor quality of information available on the internet, and acknowledged the advantage of hearing the experiences of post-treatment patients. Biological relevance may influence the neural response towards images which depict attack intent. In the present study, images featuring reptiles and firearms were employed as target and flanking stimuli in a modified version of the affective Flanker task. Forty-two participants (21 male) completed the modified Flanker task as EEG was recorded. Congruency effects in reaction times were more consistently observed for arrays with firearm targets than for arrays with reptile targets. Arrays with neutral targets (i.e., water pistols, turtles) evoked more negative mean N2 (250-400 ms) amplitudes than those with attack targets (i.e., attacking snakes, aimed handguns), while arrays with aimed handgun targets elicited more positive mean activity for the late positive component (LPC; 450-650 ms) compared to arrays with water pistol or reptile targets. Congruency effects were also found in N2 activity for arrays with firearm targets and reptile Flankers. In addition, LPC amplitude for incongruent arrays with attack targets and neutral Flankers was reduced compared to congruent attack arrays. In this study, we investigated whether the processing of negated directional terms such as "not up" or "not down" poses a conflict for participants and results in similar processing adjustments as non-linguistic conflicts do (Dudschig & Kaup, 2019). In each trial, participants read one of the following four phrases "now up", "not up", "now down" or "not down" and responded with a button press on a response key mounted in the upper versus lower vertical space. Behavioral data indicated that processing negated phrases leads to considerable processing difficulties for participants even after extensive practice. Interestingly, in line with standard conflict adaptation effects reported in the Simon, the Flanker and the Stroop task, negation processing was facilitated when preceded by another high conflict trial (i.e. a negated trial) as compared to a low conflict trial (i.e. an affirmative phrase). In addition, electrophysiological data showed that in negated trials first the to-be-negated information was activated (i.e., up in the case of "not up") and only in a second step, the outcome of the negation process was represented (i.e. down). In line with behavioral data, electrophysiological data was modified by trial sequence, suggesting negation triggering standard conflict adaptation patterns. Taken together, conflict-related processing adjustments can be also observed if the conflict is triggered by linguistic negation of vertical directional words. Most reasoning tasks used in behavioral and neuroimaging studies are abstract, triggering slow, effortful processes. By contrast, most of everyday life reasoning is fast and effortless, as when we exchange arguments in conversation. Recent behavioral studies have shown that reasoning tasks with the same underlying logic can be solved much more easily if they are embedded in an argumentative context. In the present article, we study the neural bases of this type of everyday, argumentative reasoning. Such reasoning is both a social and a metarepresentational process, suggesting it should share some mechanisms, and thus some neural bases, with other social, metarepresentational process such as pragmatics, metacognition, or theory of mind. To isolate the neural bases of argumentative reasoning, we measured fMRI activity of participants who read the same statement presented either as the conclusion of an argument, or as an assertion. We found that conclusions of arguments, compared to assertions, were associated with greater activity in a region of the medial prefrontal cortex that was identified in quantitative meta-analyses of studies on theory of mind. This study shows that it is possible to use more ecologically valid tasks to study the neural bases of reasoning, and that using such tasks might point to different neural bases than those observed with the more abstract and artificial tasks typically used in the neuroscience of reasoning. Objectives: This descriptive study assesses how physicians' decisional conflict influences their ability to address treatment outcomes (TOs) in a decision-making encounter with an advanced-stage cancer simulated patient (SP)., Methods: Physicians (N = 138) performed a decision-making encounter with the SP trained to ask for TOs information. The physicians' decisional conflict regarding patients' cancer treatments in general was assessed with the General Decisional Conflict Scale (Gen-DCS). The physicians' decisional conflict regarding the SP's cancer treatments was assessed with the Specific Decisional Conflict Scale (Spe-DCS). Physicians' ability to address TOs during the encounter was assessed with an interaction analysis system: the Multi-Dimensional Analysis of Patient Outcome Predictions (MD.POP). Weekly time spent with cancer patients was assessed with a questionnaire., Results: Physicians' Spe-DCS (β = -.21 ; p = .014) and weekly time spent with cancer patients (β = .22 ; p = .008) predicted the number of TOs addressed during the encounter. Spe-DCS scores predicted nearly all MD.POP dimensions (r = -.18 ; p = .040 to r = -.30 to p < .001) whereas Gen-DCS scores predicted nearly none MD.POP dimensions., Conclusion: Physicians' specific decisional conflict interferes with their ability to address TOs in a decision-making encounter with an advanced-stage cancer SP., Practice Implications: Physicians should be trained to address TOs according to patient preferences, despite their own decisional conflict., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors have declared that there is no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Sociality often involves conflict as individuals compete with group members for resources. In many species, including humans, individuals assort into dominance hierarchies. Individuals with more social information may be able to better optimize which individuals they challenge and in doing so, improve their overall rank in the hierarchy. Understanding how information is perceived, processed, and used by individuals in hierarchical systems is critical to understanding how animals make aggression decisions because different types of information can underlie different kinds of aggression strategies. This review summarizes recent research on the effect of five information types on animal conflict: Firstly, individual experience; secondly, recognition abilities; thirdly, social context; fourthly, transitive inference; and finally, network or global inference. This increased understanding of the information underlying social interactions can begin to provide new insight into structured conflict and could be useful to better understand strategic decision-making, social plasticity, and the cognitive load of sociality across species, including humans., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Human societies are organized into group-based hierarchies, with some groups enjoying the privileges of being on top and others struggling at the bottom. The position groups occupy in the hierarchy fundamentally shape their psychology, influencing their perception of and orientation toward the status quo and their perspectives and needs in conflict. Despite a growing body of interventions designed to reduce group-based conflict, the role of group power in shaping the effectiveness of these approaches remains underappreciated. We first review the psychological consequences of group power. We then highlight how overlooking this psychology can result in intervention efforts to reduce conflict that are either ineffective or successfully increase intergroup harmony but do so at the cost of entrenching inequality. We conclude with recommendations for incorporating insights from research on group power to develop approaches that help to achieve both greater intergroup harmony and equality., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Economic games offer an analytic tool to examine strategic decision-making in social interactions. Here we identify four sources of power that can be captured and studied with economic games - asymmetric dependence, the possibility to reduce dependence, the ability to punish and reward, and the use of knowledge and information. We review recent studies examining these distinct forms of power, highlight that the use of economic games can benefit our understanding of the behavioral and neurobiological underpinnings of power, and illustrate how power differences within and between groups impact cooperation, exploitation, and conflict., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. The rates of suicide and self-harm in Northern Ireland are high, and have increased from 143 registered suicides in 1996 to 313 in 2010 and 318 in 2015. This Review summarises the epidemiology of suicidal behaviour, as well as the evidence from a small number of studies that have identified risk factors associated with high suicide rates in Northern Ireland. These risk factors were mental illness, trauma, exposure to the conflict known as the Troubles, deprivation, relationship problems, employment difficulties, financial difficulties, being LGBT, childhood adversities, and alcohol or drug use. We highlight the key challenges and opportunities for suicide prevention, emphasising a so-called lifespan approach. More needs to be done to address the relationship between substance misuse and suicide. Future research and prevention efforts should also focus on the transgenerational effect of the conflict, youth suicide, suicide prevention in minority groups, and the criminal justice context. The provision of and access to suicide-specific psychosocial interventions need to be prioritised, more support for people in crisis is required, as well as interventions for mental illness. Protect Life 2, the national suicide prevention strategy, needs to be implemented in full. Research on the dysfunctions of power for group interactions is covered in this review. While individuals generally benefit from possessing power, groups often are plagued by power struggles when one or more individuals within the group possess power, such as in groups with high intra-group power dispersion (e.g. a clear job title hierarchy or differences in salary levels) or a high average level of member power (e.g. management teams, all-star sports teams). In such groups with at least one powerful member, research shows that intragroup power struggles are likely and detract from group outcomes, including performance, viability, and creativity. Groups have the highest quality interactions when they minimize the salience of power within their group by helping individuals expand the 'power pie' in group, such as by identifying multiple sources of power within oneself or the group and having power-holders whom can dynamically flex the perceived power-distance within the group., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Emotional conflict adaptation is an important process of cognitive control in human behavioral regulation. The face-word Stroop task and the emotional Simon task were employed to explore the correlation between fluid intelligence and neural processes of emotional conflict adaptation using event-related potential (ERP) techniques. Thirty-two intellectually average children (mean age of 10.72 years) and thirty-four intellectually gifted children (mean age of 10.86 years) participated in the present study. The behavioral results indicated that both intellectually gifted and average children showed reliable emotional conflict adaptation effects (CAEs) on reaction times (RTs) and error rates. However, the two IQ groups differed in the magnitude of error rates during emotional conflict adaptation. The electrophysiological results further revealed that the IQ differences in emotional conflict adaptation were mainly associated with emotional conflict detection processes as demonstrated by the frontal N2-CAE values. The two IQ groups did not differ in early P3 or late P3 responses during emotional conflict resolution processes. The gifted and average children showed different patterns during cognitive control processes when facing emotional Simon conflicts and emotional Stroop conflicts. Previous work has demonstrated that cognitive control can be influenced by affect, both when it is tied to the anticipated outcomes for cognitive performance (integral affect) and when affect is induced independently of performance (incidental affect). However, the mechanisms through which such interactions occur remain debated, in part because they have yet to be formalized in a way that allows experimenters to test quantitative predictions of a putative mechanism. To generate such predictions, we leveraged a recent model that determines cognitive control allocation by weighing potential costs and benefits in order to determine the overall Expected Value of Control (EVC). We simulated potential accounts of how integral and incidental affect might influence this valuation process, including whether incidental positive affect influences how difficult one perceives a task to be, how effortful it feels to exert control, and/or the marginal utility of succeeding at the task. We find that each of these accounts makes dissociable predictions regarding affect's influence on control allocation and measures of task performance (e.g., conflict adaptation, switch costs). We discuss these findings in light of the existing empirical findings and theoretical models. Collectively, this work grounds existing theories regarding affect-control interactions, and provides a method by which specific predictions of such accounts can be confirmed or refuted based on empirical data., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V.
