Introduction: We assessed the accuracy and fit of 3-dimensional (3D)-printed indirect bonding (IDB) trays fabricated using various photopolymer resin materials., Methods: A maxillary plaster model and 60 plaster replicas were created. IDB trays with arbitrary bracket configurations were 3D-printed using 3 hard resins (Amber [AB], TC85DAC [TC], Orthoflex [OF]) and 3 soft resins (IBT [IT], IDB2 [ID], and MED625FLX [MD]). A reference plaster model with a computer-aided design-designed IDB tray attached with nonfunctional, arbitrary bracket configurations on the buccal surface serving as reference points for measurement was superimposed on scanned plaster replicas holding 3D-printed trays to assess transfer accuracy and clinically acceptable error. Printing accuracy was assessed by comparing computer-aided design trays to printed trays, and tray fit was measured by the gap volume between the tray and plaster replica using a Fit-Checker (GC Corp, Tokyo, Japan)., Results: Six tray groups showed significant linear transfer errors, particularly in the vertical direction (0.15 mm [95% confidence interval {CI}, 0.10-1.15]; P = 0.004). The OF group exhibited the largest vertical error (0.27 mm [95% CI, 0.19-0.35]), whereas the ID group had the smallest (0.10 mm [95% CI, 0.06-0.14]). Angular errors did not exhibit significant differences across the groups. Linear precision error was the highest in OF, followed by ID, TC, and MD, then AB and IT (P <0.001). Of all tray groups, 90.1% and 68.8% met the clinically acceptable linear (<0.25 mm) and angular errors (1°)., Conclusions: Linear errors, particularly vertical errors, are more material-dependent than angular errors. Gap volume alone was not a reliable predictor of IDB tray accuracy. Objectives: To create bacteria-resistant dental CAD-CAM blocks with a biofilm-resistant effect by incorporating Nano-crystalline ceramic and polymer (NCP) with 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) and at an equimolar ratio, referred to as MS., Methods: Experimental groups comprised NCP blocks containing zwitterions at 0.15wt% (MS015) and 0.45wt% (MS045). NCP blocks without MS served as control (CTRL). Flexural strength, surface hardness, water sorption and solubility, photometric properties, and cytotoxicity were assessed for all samples. Additionally, the resistance to single and multi-species bacterial adhesion was investigated., Results: MS045 showed significant reduction in flexural strength (P < 0.01) compared to both CTRL and MS015. Both MS015 and MS045 showed significantly increased water sorption and significant reduction in water solubility compared to CTRL. Light transmission remained consistent across all MS content levels, but the irradiance value decreased by 12 % in the MS045 group compared to the MS015 group. Calcium silicate-based cement (CSC) is a commonly used material in endodontic treatment. However, it has limited antibacterial activity, especially for cases involving primary infections. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are recognized for their potential in biomedical applications due to their antibacterial properties and ability to reduce inflammation. This study aims to optimize CSC by incorporating ZnO-NPs to maintain its physical properties, enhance its antibacterial activity, and reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. ZnO-NPs were integrated into a commercial CSC (Endocem MTA) at 1 wt% (CSZ1) or 3 wt% (CSZ3). Setting time, compressive strength, and X-ray diffraction were then measured. In addition, pH, calcium ion release, and zinc ion release were measured for 7 days. Antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis and viability of murine macrophages (RAW264.7) were determined using colorimetric assays. Gene expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in lipopolysaccharide induced RAW264.7 were evaluated using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results were compared to an unmodified CSC group. In the CSZ3 group, there was a significant increase of approximately 12% in setting time and a reduction of about 36.4% in compressive strength compared to the control and CSZ1 groups. The presence of ZnO-NPs was detected in both CSZ1 and CSZ3. Both CSC and CSZ1 groups maintained an alkaline pH and released calcium ions, while zinc ions were significantly released in the CSZ1 group. Additionally, CSZ1 showed a 1.8-fold reduction of bacterial activity and exhibited around 85% reduction in colony-forming units compared to the CSC group. Furthermore, the CSZ1 group showed a more than 39% reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokine levels compared to the CSC group. Background: Adhesive remnants post-orthodontic treatment might have deleterious effects on oral health, including enamel demineralization, plaque accumulation, and elevated risk of caries development. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize adhesive residues in an ex vivo environment rich in salivary microbiota using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) technology., Methods: Disc-shaped adhesive samples with thickness ranging from 800 to 100 µm were prepared using GC Ortho, GOTO, T Orthobond, and Transbond XT and subsequently evaluated utilizing a QLF system. Bovine teeth containing GC Ortho and GOTO adhesives and isolated human premolar teeth bonded with brackets were subjected to a 10-day incubation in an artificial saliva environment. Daily imaging was conducted using QLF during incubation. Data with ΔR > 30% and simple hygiene score (SHS) were obtained with a software for further analysis., Results: Fluorescence intensity exhibited significant differences among the four orthodontic adhesives (p < 0.05). Results of incubation in artificial saliva revealed that red fluorescence surrounding the adhesive on the tooth surface was distinctly observable from day five onwards, with ΔR > 30% and SHS levels higher than those of the control group without adhesive (p < 0.05). Objectives: This study aimed at demonstrating the remineralization effect of the enamel around the brackets to aid reduction in white spot lesions (WSLs) with use of zinc-doped phosphate-based glass (Zn-PBG) containing orthodontic adhesives., Methods: Zn-PBG powder was synthesized, and particle morphology, size, and density were evaluated. Orthodontic adhesives with increasing loading percentage of Zn-PBG powder were prepared: ZnPG3 (3 wt.%), ZnPG6 (6 wt.%), and ZnPG9 (9 wt.%). Brackets were bonded on the etched enamel surface and stored in distilled water (DW) for 1 h. Following, Shear bond strength (SBS) along with adhesive remnant index were analyzed. The release of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and zinc (Zn) from adhesive specimens in DW was evaluated after 7, 15 and 30 days of immersion. The remineralization effect was confirmed by microhardness and surface morphology analysis with scanning electron microscopy., Results: The SBS value was observed between 20 and 22 MPa on enamel surface. The concentration of Ca, P and Zn released in DW increased with loading percentage of Zn-PBG. The microhardness increased in the experimental groups after immersion in artificial saliva for 7 days. Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a commonly used material for the fabrication of biomedical appliances. Although PMMA has several advantages, it is susceptible to microbial insults with practical use. Therefore, different bioactive nanomaterials, such as nanoceria (CeN), have been proposed to enhance the properties of PMMA. In this study, we investigated the effect of the incorporation of CeN into PMMA with and without the use of mesoporous silica nanoparticle (SBA-15) carriers. The unmodified PMMA specimens (control, CTRL) were compared to groups containing SBA-15, CeN, and the synthesized SBA-15 impregnated with CeN (SBA-15@CeN) at different loading percentages. The mechanical and physical properties of the different SBA-15@CeN groups and their effects on cell viability were investigated, and the optimal CeN concentration was identified accordingly. Our results revealed that flexural strength was significantly (P < 0.01) reduced in the SBA-15@CeN 3× group (containing 3-fold the CeN wt. %). Although the surface microhardness increased with the increase in the wt. % of SBA-15@CeN, cell viability was significantly reduced (P < 0.001). The SBA-15@CeN 1× group had the optimal concentration and displayed significant resistance to single-and multispecies microbial colonization. Finally, the enzymatic activity of CeN was significantly high in the SBA-15@CeN 1× group. The proinflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, CD80, and CD86) showed a significant (P < 0.001) multifold reduction in lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW cells treated with a 5-day eluate of the SBA-15@CeN 1× group. Introduction: In this study, we aimed to evaluate and compare the bracket positioning accuracy of the indirect bonding (IDB) transfer tray fabricated in-clinic using the tray printing (TP) and marker-model printing methods (MP)., Methods: The TP group was further divided into 2 groups (single-tray printing [STP] and multiple-tray printing [MTP]) depending on the presence of a tray split created using the 3-dimensional (3D) software. Five duplicated plaster models were used for each of the 3 experimental groups, and a total of 180 artificial teeth, except the second molar, were evaluated in the experiment. The dental model was scanned using a model scanner (E3; 3Shape Dental Systems, Copenhagen, Denmark). Virtual brackets were placed on facial axis points, and the IDB trays were designed and fabricated using a 3D printer (VIDA; EnvisionTEC, Mich). The accuracy of bracket positioning was evaluated by comparing the planned bracket positions and the actual bracket positions using 3D analysis on inspection software. The main effects and first-order interaction effects were analyzed together by analysis for the analysis of variance., Results: The mean distance and height errors were significantly lower in the STP group than those in the MP and MTP groups (P <0.05). The mean distance error was 0.06 mm in the STP group and 0.09 mm in the MP and MTP groups. The mean height error was 0.10 mm in the STP group and 0.15 mm and 0.18 mm in MP and MTP groups, respectively. However, no significant differences were observed in the angular errors among the 3 groups., Conclusions: The in-office-fabricated IDB system with computer-aided design and 3D printer is clinically applicable after considering the linear and angular errors. The application of 3D imaging is at its cusp in craniofacial diagnosis and treatment planning. However, most applications are limited to simple subjective superimposition-based analysis. As the diagnostic accuracy dictates the precision in operability, we propose a novel method that enables objective clinical decision making for patients with mandibular asymmetry. We analyzed cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 34 patients who underwent surgical correction for mandibular asymmetry using a high-throughput computing algorithm. Radiomic segmentation of quantitative features of surface and volume followed by exploration resulted in identification of a computed modified absolute mandibular midsagittal plane (cmAMP). Tomographic similarity scan (ToSS) curves were generated via bilateral equidistant scanning in an antero-posterior direction with cmAMP as the reference. ToSS comprised of a comprehensive similarity index (SI) score curve and a segment-wise volume curve. The SI score was computed using the Sørensen-Dice similarity coefficient ranging from 0 to 1. The volumetric analysis was represented as the non-overlapping volume (NOV) and overlapping volume (OV) for each segment, with two segmentation lines, at the mental foramen anteriorly and the intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy region posteriorly. Statistical analysis showed strong negative correlation between the NOV and SI scores for the anterior, middle, and total mandible (P < 0.001). Additionally, a significant correlation was observed between the change in the SI scores for anterior (P = 0.044) and middle segments (P < 0.001) to the total mandible when comparing the data before and after the surgery. Introduction: The aim of this research was to verify that ultraviolet light (UV)-photofunctionalization improves the success rate and biomechanical stability of miniscrews regardless of length, and to evaluate the comparability of biomechanical stability between UV-photofunctionalized miniscrews with short lengths and untreated miniscrews with conventional lengths., Methods: Eight male beagles (age, 12-15 months; weight, 10-13 kg) received a total of 64 miniscrews, including 7-mm and 4-mm untreated and UV-photofunctionalized, acid-etched miniscrews with the use of a random block design. The cumulative success rates were examined in all studied groups. The insertion and removal torques and screw mobility were measured. Microcomputed tomographic scans and histomorphometric analyses were performed at 8 weeks postoperatively., Results: The success rates of 7-mm UV-untreated and UV-photofunctionalized miniscrews were 87.5% and 100%, respectively, vs 43.8% for the 4-mm UV-untreated and 4-mm UV-photofunctionalized miniscrews. The rates were significantly different in accordance with the length (P <0.001). There were no differences in the insertion and removal torque and screw mobility between groups according to the length or UV treatment. However, the 4-mm UV-untreated miniscrews yielded a mean bone area ratio of 6.35 ± 7.43%, whereas the 7-mm UV-photofunctionalized miniscrew yielded a mean ratio of 32.17 ± 8.34% (P = 0.037)., Conclusions: The UV-photofunctionalization significantly increased the biomechanical stability and led to increased bone and miniscrew contact area in dogs with miniscrews of the same length. Introduction: We evaluated soft-tissue thickness changes after bimaxillary surgery according to vertical facial patterns in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion with mandibular prognathism., Methods: Forty-three Korean patients (16 men and 27 women; mean age, 22.6 ± 4.1 years) with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent bimaxillary surgery were divided into 2 groups: normal-angle group (N group) and high-angle group (H group), on the basis of the presurgical angle of the mandibular plane relative to the sella-nasion plane (SN-MP). Changes in hard-tissue landmarks and soft-tissue thickness before and after surgery were analyzed from reconstructed 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography images. Postoperative soft-tissue thickness in both groups was compared with that in 40 patients with normal skeletal Class I malocclusion in the reference group., Results: Group N (27°-37°) and group H (>37°) did not differ significantly in terms of sex and age before surgery. Preoperative pogonion (Pog) thickness was significantly less in group H (9.7 ± 1.6 mm) than in group N (10.8 ± 1.9 mm) (P = 0.042). Adjusted multiple linear regression analysis showed a weak positive linear relationship between the SN-MP before surgery and soft-tissue Pog thickness change (R 2 of 0.361; P = 0.001) after surgery, but the area below the lower lips was not completely normalized despite surgery., Conclusions: The thickness of the soft-tissue Pog may increase slightly after surgery in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion with a higher preoperative mandibular plane angle, but normalization in the area cannot be completely achieved despite surgery., (Copyright © 2020 American Association of Orthodontists. It is essential for 3D-printed intra-oral appliances to be able to withstand the mechanical and microbial insult existent in the harsh environment of the oral cavity. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based appliances are widely used in dentistry. Hence, the present study aimed to evaluate the role of nanodiamonds (NDs) as fillers to enhance the resistance to friction and wear. Using a solution-based mixing technique, 0.1 wt% ND was incorporated into the PMMA, and specimens were 3D-printed for tribological and bacterial analysis. The control specimens without ND fillers were tested against specimens with both amine-functionalized NDs (A-ND) and pure non-functionalized NDs (ND). The surface hardness test revealed a statistically significant increase in the Vickers micro-hardness (p < 0.001) in the nanocomposite groups. There was a significant reduction in the coefficient of friction (COF) (p < 0.01) in both the ND and A-ND nanocomposites compared to the stainless steel (SS) counter surfaces. However, for titanium (Ti)-based specimens, the COF of the control group was similar to that of A-ND but lower than that of ND. The wear resistance evaluation revealed that both the ND and A-ND groups displayed enhanced resistance to surface loss in comparison to the controls for both SS and Ti counter-surfaces (p < 0.001). Furthermore, both A-ND and ND exhibited significantly enhanced resistance to the formation of Streptococcus mutans biofilms after 48 h (p < 0.01) compared to the control group. Hence, we concluded that the addition of 0.1 wt% ND in the PMMA-based resin for 3D printing resulted in significant improvement in properties such as COF, wear resistance, and resistance to S. mutans, without any notable impact associated with the functionalization of the NDs., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. In this study, we carry out environmental and economic loss analyses of the oil discharge from the shipwreck Jeh Hun. By performing 500 simulations of hypothetical oil spill cases, we obtain the minimum and worst damage cases. In the minimum damage case, there is just marine pollution without coastal pollution or aquaculture farm pollution. On the other hand, in the worst damage case, there is serious marine pollution, coastal pollution, and aquaculture pollution. The main purpose of the environmental and economic loss analyses is to support salvage planning for the shipwreck, because we have to consider the oil discharge from the shipwreck during oil removal and salvage. Abstract: Simple, fast, and accurate analytical techniques for verifying the accuracy of label declarations for marine oil dietary supplements containing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are required because of the increased consumption of these products. We recently developed broad-based partial least squares regression (PLS-R) models to quantify six fatty acids (FAs) and FA classes by using the spectroscopic data from a portable Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) device and a benchtop Fourier transform near infrared (FT-NIR) spectrometer. We developed an improved quantification method for these FAs and FA classes by incorporating a nonlinear calibration approach based on the machine learning technique support vector machines. For the two spectroscopic methods, high accuracy in prediction was indicated by low root mean square error of prediction and by correlation coefficients (R2) close to 1, indicating excellent model performance. The percent accuracy of the support vector regression (SV-R) model predicted values for EPA and DHA in the reference material was 90 to 110%. In comparison to PLS-R, SV-R accuracy for prediction of FA and FA class concentrations was up to 2.4 times higher for both ATR-FTIR and FT-NIR spectroscopic data. The SV-R models also provided closer agreement with the certified and reference values for the prediction of EPA and DHA in the reference standard. Based on our findings, the SV-R methods had superior accuracy and predictive quality for predicting the FA concentrations in marine oil dietary supplements. The combination of SV-R with ATR-FTIR and/or FT-NIR spectroscopic data can potentially be applied for the rapid screening of marine oil products to verify the accuracy of label declarations., (Published 2020 by the International Association for Food Protection. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether combining two treatments to avoid biological aging of the surface of titanium and zirconia implants; i.e., storage in an aqueous solution after ultraviolet light (UV) or non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma (NTP) treatment, yielded surface bioactivity comparable to that following post-15-min UV or NTP treatment storage under air or immediately after UV or NTP treatment. Grade IV titanium discs modified by large grit sand-blasting and acid-etching (SLA) and smooth zirconia discs were irradiated with UV or NTP and their surface properties were evaluated immediately and after storage for 8 weeks in distilled H 2 O (dH 2 O) and a sealed container under air. Approximately 15-30 nm-sized nano-protrusions were formed only on SLA surfaces in dH 2 O immediately after UV or NTP treatment. Immediate dH 2 O storage after UV or NTP treatment prevented hydrocarbon contamination and maintained elevated amounts of Ti and Zr. After 8 weeks, unlike zirconia, protein adsorption, cellular adhesion, and cytoskeletal development of MC3T3-E1 cells on SLA surfaces stored in dH 2 O immediately after UV treatment were further exceeding those immediately after UV or NTP treatments. Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in the maxillary sinus floor levels between adults with an anterior open bite and those without., Methods: This retrospective study included 30 subjects: 15 adults with an anterior open bite (mean age, 21.5 ± 4.3 years) and 15 control subjects with normal occlusion (mean age, 21.7 ± 3.1 years). Cone-beam computed tomography and lateral cephalograms were analyzed before treatment., Results: The open-bite group exhibited a significantly greater maxillary posterior alveolar height (P <0.05). The craniocaudal heights of the maxillary sinus in the region between the first and second molars and between the second premolar and first molar were significantly greater in the open bite group (40.5 and 39.0 mm, respectively) than in the control group (36.7 and 34.7 mm, respectively; P <0.05 for both). The basal bone heights in the regions between the first and second molars, the second premolar and first molar, and the first and second premolars were significantly smaller in the open-bite group than in the control group (P <0.001 for all)., Conclusions: Vertical pneumatization of the maxillary sinus floor in the region between the first and second molars and between the second premolar and first molar is greater in adults with an anterior open bite than in those without, whereas basal bone height in the maxillary posterior region is lower in the open-bite patients., (Copyright © 2016 American Association of Orthodontists. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate the postoperative stability of sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) in pre-orthodontic orthognathic surgery (POGS) for skeletal Class III malocclusion. Thirty-seven patients (SSRO, n = 18; IVRO, n = 19) who underwent bimaxillary surgery were divided into two groups according to the type of surgery. During the postoperative period, there were no significant differences in anterior and superior movements of the mandible at point B between the two groups, but occlusal plane angle of the SSRO group significantly decreased more than that of the IVRO group (P = 0.003). Only the SSRO group showed a linear relationship between the amount of postoperative horizontal and vertical movements of the mandible (R(2) = 0.254; P = 0.033), indicating that the amount of postoperative upward movement of the mandible increased as the amount of postoperative forward movement increased (r = -0.504; P = 0.033). The mandible after SSRO in POGS rotated counterclockwise due to rigid fixation between two segments, whereas the mandible after IVRO without rigid fixation in POGS moved mainly in a superior direction. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the factors contributing to mandibular relapse after intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) while controlling for possible confounders. Forty-seven patients who underwent bimaxillary surgery were divided into three groups according to the direction of horizontal mandibular relapse: a stable group (group S), a posterior relapse group (group P), and an anterior relapse group (group A). Lateral cephalograms were analysed 1 month before and at 7 days and 12 months after surgery. One month before surgery, the pogonion in group A was positioned about 13 mm more anteriorly than in group P (P < 0.05). Immediately after surgery, the mandibles in groups A and S had moved about 6 mm more posteriorly than in group P. At 12 months, both the mandibles (point B) and the maxillae (point A) had moved posteriorly in group P (P < 0.05). A multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the amount of setback was the one key factor predicting postoperative mandibular changes 12 months after IVRO. As the amount of setback decreased, mandibular posterior horizontal relapse increased after IVRO. Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of malocclusion severity on oral health-related quality of life and food intake ability in adult patients, controlling for sex, age, and the type of dental clinic visited., Methods: The sample consisted of 472 Korean patients (156 male, 316 female) with a mean age of 21.1 (SD, 8.6) years in a dental hospital and a private clinic. The correlations between the Korean version of the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14K), subjective food intake ability (FIA) for 5 key foods, and Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need-Dental Health Component (IOTN-DHC) were investigated., Results: The mean IOTN-DHC and OHIP-14K scores were significantly higher for the dental hospital patients than for the private clinic patients (IOTN-DHC, P <0.001; OHIP-14K, P <0.05). Malocclusion severity was significantly higher in male than in female subjects (P <0.001). Older patients perceived their oral health-related quality of life more negatively than did the teens (P <0.001). As the severity of the malocclusion increased, oral health-related quality of life and masticatory function worsened (OHIP-14K, P <0.001; FIA, P <0.05)., Conclusions: As the severity of the malocclusion and the age of the patients increased, oral health-related quality of life and masticatory function relatively deteriorated. Introduction: In this study, we aimed to assess the surface characteristics and the biomechanical stability of miniscrews with an anodic oxidized surface compared with machined surface miniscrews in beagle dogs., Methods: Self-drilled, titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloy miniscrews with an anodic oxidized surface (n = 48) or a machined surface (n = 48) were placed into the mandibles of 12 beagle dogs. The surface characteristics of both types of miniscrews were analyzed before implantation with scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Insertion torque was measured during placement of all 96 miniscrews. Half of the implants in each group (24 specimens per subgroup) received 200 to 250 g of tensile force for 3-week or 12-week loading periods. Removal torque was measured in 12 specimens of each subgroup, and bone-implant contact and bone volume were quantified in the other 12 specimens of each subgroup., Results: Atomic force microscopy measurements demonstrated that the anodic oxidized surface miniscrews had significantly higher roughness parameters than did the machined surface miniscrews (P < 0.001). The 2 types of miniscrews were not significantly different in insertion and removal torque values or in bone-implant contacts and bone volumes, regardless of the loading period., Conclusions: Anodic oxidized miniscrews have different surface roughness profiles but no clinically significant superiority in biomechanical stability compared with machined surface miniscrews., (Copyright © 2016 American Association of Orthodontists. Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the association between malocclusion and oral health-related quality of life in young adults without orthodontic treatment, controlling for sociodemographic factors and common oral diseases., Methods: The sample consisted of 429 Korean patients (328 men, 101 women) 18 to 32 years of age. They completed the Korean version of the oral health impact profile-14 questionnaire and had a clinical examination, including an assessment with the index of orthodontic treatment need-dental health component. We collected sociodemographic information (age, sex, and education level) and evaluated other common oral diseases (decayed, missing, and filled teeth; periodontal health status; temporomandibular disorder; and oral soft tissue diseases)., Results: Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that patients requiring extensive orthodontic treatment were more than 2.7 times as likely to have poor oral health-related quality of life as the corresponding "no treatment needed" reference group (odds ratio, 2.74; 95% confidence interval, 1.60-4.59; P <0.001). Severe malocclusion is significantly associated with functional limitations, physical pain, and social disability in young adults., Conclusions: Malocclusion is a key factor associated with poor quality of life caused by limited oral function, pain, and social disability in young adults., (Copyright © 2015 American Association of Orthodontists. To reduce a large amount of mandibular setback and to prevent pharyngeal airway space narrowing when correcting a severe anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy, a mandibular step osteotomy is often combined with 2-stage orthognathic surgery. This case report describes a successful 2-stage orthognathic treatment combined with a mandibular step osteotomy. A 20-year-old man had severe mandibular protrusion, facial asymmetry, and macroglossia. Phase 1 surgery included the mandibular step osteotomy and a partial glossectomy; then we performed phase 2 surgery with a 2-piece LeFort I segmental osteotomy and a bilateral intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy to correct the patient's mandibular protrusion and facial asymmetry. Distraction osteogenesis is an alternative treatment option for patients with facial asymmetry and mandibular hypoplasia. New bone is formed between bone segment surfaces that are gradually separated by incremental traction. The purpose of this article is to report the treatment of a 22-year-old man with hemifacial microsomia, facial asymmetry, and a skeletal Class II profile. The patient's left mandibular ramus was lengthened with distraction osteogenesis, and miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion was used to correct the maxillary transverse deficiency. Postoperative orthodontic treatment achieved tooth alignment and closure of the posterior open bite. The total treatment period was 27 months. Autotransplantation is an option for tooth replacement when a suitable tooth is available and anatomic circumstances are favorable. This case report describes successful orthognathic treatment that was combined with autotransplantation of a maxillary third molar. A 20-year-old woman had mandibular protrusion and facial asymmetry. Five years previously, her mandibular right first molar had been extracted because of dental caries. After preoperative orthodontic treatment, we performed a LeFort I procedure and a bilateral intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy to correct the patient's mandibular protrusion and facial asymmetry. During the postoperative orthodontic treatment, the maxillary left third molar was autotransplanted into the mandibular right first molar site. The total treatment period was 24 months. As a result of these therapeutic treatments, the patient's facial appearance was improved, and an implant was unnecessary.
