Previous studies have demonstrated the promising value of cell therapy including adrenal chromaffin cells that have the capacity to act as mini-pumps that release amines and peptides for alleviating chronic pain. The paper presents the cases of two gentlemen suffering from severe central NP after thoracic SCI. Six months after chromaffin cell intrathecal injection, their pain relieved significantly. The results demonstrated the preliminary therapeutic efficacy of chromaffin cell transplants in people with NP, and support further research of this treatment strategy for the management of intractable chronic pain due to SCI. A 64-year-old Danish man presented with lower limb weakness and severe pain for 2 years and 5 months. He had a history of poliomyelitis affecting his limbs 59 years ago. Physical examination revealed atrophy of muscles of both lower limbs. Electromyography revealed that recruitment of maximal voluntary contraction of muscles was decreased in the affected muscles. He received cell-based neurorestorative therapy during admission, and then, his neurological function improved and remained stable during 4-year follow-up. This case report shows that cell therapy could be a treatment option for postpoliomyelitis syndrome. 8. An overpressure-time history model of methane-air explosion in tunnel-shape space

Abstract

This study investigated methane-air explosion in tunnel-shape space and developed an overpressure-time history model based on numerical results. The findings revealed that for the progressively vented gas explosion with movable steel obstacles in a 20 m long tunnel, the inner peak overpressure increased as the activation pressure of the tunnel top cover got higher but remained below 6 bar. However, as the activation pressure increased to 8 bar or higher, the peak inner overpressure remained unchanged. As the segment cover panel became wider, the peak pressure was almost unchanged, but the pressure duration and impulse declined significantly. The peak pressure and impulse increased as the tunnel length vary from 10 to 30 m. With fixed tunnel length, higher blast pressure but lower impulse was observed as the inner obstacles were closer or the activation pressure of obstacles was higher. It is also found that a local enlarged space in the tunnel enhanced the peak pressure significantly. An overpressure time history model for the tunnel with fixed top cover and enlarged end zone was established. The model considered activation pressure of vent cover, area and length of vent opening, methane concentration, number and blockage ratio of fixed obstacles was developed to calculate the overpressure and corresponding time at characteristic points of the pressure-history curve. The cubic Hermite interpolation algorithm and a specially tuned formula consisting of the power and exponential function were used to interpolate pressure values between characteristic points. The proposed model can predict both the peak pressure and the overpressure time history with acceptable accuracy.

Abstract

Wheat (Triticum spp.) is crucial to food security. Grain protein content (GPC) is key to its nutritional and economic value and is controlled by genetic and agronomic factors, soil properties and weather. GPC prediction from remote sensing could reduce nitrogen (N) losses, help management decisions, and improve profit. However, GPC prediction is complex because multiple plant traits influence GPC and their effects change through the growing season. Traits with known physiological links to GPC, which can be retrieved from imaging spectroscopy, include leaf area index (LAI), chlorophyll (Ca+b), and stress indicators. Further inspection of these and other traits retrieved from satellite data can advance research relevant to precision agriculture. Sentinel-2 (S2) timeseries (TS) were acquired for 6,355 ha of commercial dryland bread (T. aestivum) and durum (T. durum) wheat fields in south-east Australia through two consecutive years with dissimilar rainfall. Wheat growers provided ∼ 92,000 GPC data points from harvester-mounted protein monitors. For each, Ca+b, leaf dry matter, leaf water content (Cw) and LAI were retrieved from the S2 images by radiative transfer model inversion. A gradient boosted machine learning algorithm was applied to analyse these traits’ importance to GPC and to predict GPC in 30% of samples unseen by the algorithm in training. The strongest relationships between predicted and observed GPC (R2 = 0.86, RMSE = 0.56 %), in a model built from five S2 images across a season, were better than those from single-date hyperspectral (HS). In severe water stress, LAI was the main predictor of GPC early in the season, but this switched to Cw later. Trait importance was more evenly distributed in milder conditions. S2 TS had a clear accuracy advantage over single-date S2 and HS, especially in benign conditions, emphasising the potential of S2 TS for large-scale GPC monitoring.

Abstract

To achieve net zero carbon emissions from energy systems, biogas has become an attractive renewable resource for hydrogen production. The sorption enhanced steam reforming (SESR) process is proposed to produce high-purity hydrogen from biogas, enabled by combining the catalytic reforming reaction with the simultaneous CO2 removal by sorption in a single reactor. One of the most critical challenges in using biogas in conventional reforming processes is the presence of H2S since it may deactivate the reforming catalyst. Here we experimentally study the effect of the biogas H2S concentration on the H2 production by SESR, i.e., accounting for the presence of a CaO-based solid sorbent. This work was performed in a fixed-bed reactor using a Pd/Ni-Co hydrotalcite-like material (HT) catalyst and dolomite as CO2 sorbent. Biogas (60CH4/40CO2 vol.%) with different concentrations of H2S (150, 350, 500 and 1000 ppm) was evaluated. The catalyst did not deactivate for biogas H2S concentrations of 150 and 350 ppm during five cycles of the SESR process. However, a slight decrease in the catalyst activity was detected under higher sulfur concentrations after the third SESR cycle. Sulfur was detected in the spent catalyst and sorbent materials, with a higher proportion in the sorbent for the highest H2S concentration tested (1000 ppm). H2 yield decreased by 10.8% and 4.5% points for biogas H2S concentrations of 500 and 1000 ppm after five cycles, respectively, while H2 purity decreased by only 3 vol.% and 2 vol.% points, respectively.

12. Assessment of modeling methods for predicting load resulting from hydrogen-air detonation

Abstract

As hydrogen becomes an increasingly vital component in the transition toward a sustainable energy system, its flammable and detonable properties necessitate a comprehensive understanding of its explosive characteristics. This study evaluated the accuracy and computational efficiency of an innovative numerical approach that integrates CESE compressible CFD solver, chemistry reaction model, and structural FEM solver within LS-DYNA to predict hydrogen detonation loads. Comparisons were made with the commonly used energy equivalent methods, i.e., the TNT equivalent method, and the high-pressure volume method, which utilizes multi-material ALE techniques. Hydrogen detonation test results from open-air space, open-air space with a blast wall, and semi-confined space were compared against numerical simulations. The results revealed that, for scaled distance exceeding 0.79 m/kg1/3, all three methods accurately predicted the peak overpressure. The TNT equivalent method exhibited an unexpectedly high energy efficiency factor exceeding 0.51, significantly surpassing the recommended range of 0.01–0.1 for typical vapor cloud accidents. The CESE-chemistry coupling method exceled in capturing overpressure duration and structural response due to its consideration of chemical kinetics. As the scaled distance reduced to 0.37 m/kg1/3, the CESE-chemistry coupling method maintained its proficiency in modelling pressure waves, while the TNT equivalent method overestimated peak pressure by 494%. Conversely, the high-pressure volume method underestimated the peak pressures within or near the H2-air cloud. Nevertheless, the CESE-chemistry coupling method required significantly higher computational costs, with 15–20 times more computational time compared to the other two methods, and 60–70% of the total computation time was spent solving chemical kinetics. Abstract

A decisive experimental test of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is considered one of the major scientific goals at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) towards understanding the nontrivial topological fluctuations of the Quantum Chromodynamics vacuum. In heavy-ion collisions, the CME is expected to result in a charge separation phenomenon across the reaction plane, whose strength could be strongly energy dependent. The previous CME searches have been focused on top RHIC energy collisions. In this Letter, we present a low energy search for the CME in Au+Au collisions at sNN=27 GeV. We measure elliptic flow scaled charge-dependent correlators relative to the event planes that are defined at both mid-rapidity |η|<1.0 and at forward rapidity 2.1<|η|<5.1. We compare the results based on the directed flow plane (Ψ1) at forward rapidity and the elliptic flow plane (Ψ2) at both central and forward rapidity. The CME scenario is expected to result in a larger correlation relative to Ψ1 than to Ψ2, while a flow driven background scenario would lead to a consistent result for both event planes. In 10-50% centrality, results using three different event planes are found to be consistent within experimental uncertainties, suggesting a flow driven background scenario dominating the measurement. We obtain an upper limit on the deviation from a flow driven background scenario at the 95% confidence level. This work opens up a possible road map towards future CME search with the high statistics data from the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Phase-II.

Abstract

Measurements of mass and Λ binding energy of Λ4H and Λ4He in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV are presented, with an aim to address the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) problem in hypernuclei systems with atomic number A = 4. The Λ binding energies are measured to be 2.22±0.06(stat.)±0.14(syst.) MeV and 2.38±0.13(stat.)±0.12(syst.) MeV for Λ4H and Λ4He, respectively. The measured Λ binding-energy difference is 0.16±0.14(stat.)±0.10(syst.) MeV for ground states. Combined with the γ-ray transition energies, the binding-energy difference for excited states is −0.16±0.14(stat.)±0.10(syst.) MeV, which is negative and comparable to the value of the ground states within uncertainties. These new measurements on the Λ binding-energy difference in A = 4 hypernuclei systems are consistent with the theoretical calculations that result in ΔBΛ4(1exc+)≈−ΔBΛ4(0g.s.+)<0 and present a new method for the study of CSB effect using relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract

We report the first multi-differential measurements of strange hadrons of K−, ϕ and Ξ− yields as well as the ratios of ϕ/K− and ϕ/Ξ− in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV with the STAR experiment fixed target configuration at RHIC. The ϕ mesons and Ξ− hyperons are measured through hadronic decay channels, ϕ→K+K− and Ξ−→Λπ−. Collision centrality and rapidity dependence of the transverse momentum spectra for these strange hadrons are presented. The 4π yields and ratios are compared to thermal model and hadronic transport model predictions. At this collision energy, thermal model with grand canonical ensemble (GCE) under-predicts the ϕ/K− and ϕ/Ξ− ratios while the result of canonical ensemble (CE) calculations reproduce ϕ/K−, with the correlation length rc∼2.7 fm, and ϕ/Ξ−, rc∼4.2 fm, for the 0-10% central collisions. Hadronic transport models including high mass resonance decays could also describe the ratios. While thermal calculations with GCE work well for strangeness production in high energy collisions, the change to CE at 3 GeV implies a rather different medium property at high baryon density.

18. Removal of persistent acetophenone from industrial waste-water via bismuth ferrite nanostructures

Abstract

Increasing water pollution is a severe problem in densely industrialized countries. Nanomaterials provide strong potentials for the efficient elimination of organic pollutants due to their beneficial properties. Advancement in water purification is required to more efficiently remove the emerging organic contaminants, especially in pharmaceuticals wastes such as acetophenone, which shows high solubility in industrial wastewaters. Bismuth ferrite-based nanostructures were fabricated using a novel double solvent sol-gel method. The phase purity and crystallinity of bismuth ferrite were confirmed using XRD and further endorsed by TEM analysis. The SEM and XPS were used to study the particle sizes and presence of co-dopants on the Bi and Fe-sites of bismuth ferrite. After co-doping, the band-gap engineering of pure bismuth ferrites was accomplished by reducing it from 2.06 eV to 1.45 eV, likely attributing to the creation of shallow traps for the incoming photo-generated charge carriers. In particular, the Bi0.90Gd0.10Fe0.95Sn0.05 and Bi0.95Sm0.05Fe0.75Mn0.25 successfully eliminated up to 98% of acetophenone from polluted water in 3 h by irradiation of visible-light. These results reveal the suitability of the co-doped bismuth ferrites photocatalysts for the practical removal of pharmaceutical contaminants in hazardous industrial wastewater. The photodegradation of acetophenone by bismuth ferrite nanostructures with potentially long-lasting reusability demonstrate its potential as an advanced photocatalyst for wastewater treatment.

Abstract

In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, partonic collectivity is evidenced by the constituent quark number scaling of elliptic flow anisotropy for identified hadrons. A breaking of this scaling and dominance of baryonic interactions is found for identified hadron collective flow measurements in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions. In this paper, we report measurements of the first- and second-order azimuthal anisotropic parameters, v1 and v2, of light nuclei (d, t, $^{3}$He, $^{4}$He) produced in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at the STAR experiment. An atomic mass number scaling is found in the measured v1 slopes of light nuclei at mid-rapidity. For the measured v2 magnitude, a strong rapidity dependence is observed. Unlike v2 at higher collision energies, the v2 values at mid-rapidity for all light nuclei are negative and no scaling is observed with the atomic mass number. Calculations by the Jet AA Microscopic Transport Model (JAM), with baryonic mean-field plus nucleon coalescence, are in good agreement with our observations, implying baryonic interactions dominate the collective dynamics in 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Abstract

We report on the measurements of directed flow v1 and elliptic flow v2 for hadrons (π±, K±, KS0, p, ϕ, Λ and Ξ−) from Au+Au collisions at sNN=3GeV and v2 for (π±, K±, p and p‾) at 27 and 54.4GeV with the STAR experiment. While at the two higher energy midcentral collisions the number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling holds, at 3GeV the v2 at midrapidity is negative for all hadrons and the NCQ scaling is absent. In addition, the v1 slopes at midrapidity for almost all observed hadrons are found to be positive, implying dominant repulsive baryonic interactions. The features of negative v2 and positive v1 slope at 3GeV can be reproduced with a baryonic mean-field in transport model calculations. These results imply that the medium in such collisions is likely characterized by baryonic interactions.

21. Study of an Arctic blowing snow-induced bromine explosion event in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard

Abstract

Bromine explosion events (BEEs) are important processes that influence the atmospheric oxidation capacity, especially in the polar troposphere during spring. Although sea ice surface is thought to be a significant bromine source, bromine release mechanisms remain unclear. High-resolution ground-based observations of reactive bromine, such as BrO, are important for assessing the potential impacts on tropospheric ozone and evaluating chemical models. However, previous model studies paid little attention to Svalbard, which is surrounded by both open ocean and sea ice. In this paper, we present continuous BrO slant column densities and vertical column densities derived by Multi-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy deployed at Ny-Ålesund (78.92°N, 11.93°E) in March 2017. We focused on one BEE in mid-March, during which the vertical column densities of BrO surged from 4.26 × 1013 molecular cm−2 to the peak at 1.23 × 1014 molecular cm−2 on March 17, surface ozone depleted from a background level of 46.25 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) to 13.9 ppbv. This case study indicates that the BEE was strongly associated with blowing snow induced by the cyclone systems that approached Svalbard from March 14 to 18. By considering meteorological conditions, sea ice coverage, and airmass trajectory history, we demonstrate that sea salt aerosols (SSAs) from blowing snow on sea ice, rather than from open ocean, are attributed to the occurrence of this BEE. Model results from a parallelized-tropospheric offline model of chemistry and transport (p-TOMCAT) indicate that this BEE was mainly triggered by a blowing snow event associated with a low-pressure cyclone system. The concentration of blowing-snow-sourced SSAs surged to peak when the airmass pass across the sea-ice-covered area under high wind speed, which is a critical factor in the process of bromine explosion observed in Ny-Ålesund. 22. Surface modification of coal tailings by thermal air oxidation for ammonia capture

Abstract

Utilization of coal tailings (CTs) to enable ammonia (NH3) capture is of interest from pollution control and waste management perspectives. In this work, CTs were surface modified by air oxidation at different temperatures and varying duration to increase the uptake of NH3. The CTs treated at 300 and 250 °C for 5 h achieved an NH3 uptake of 52.5 and 45.3 mg g−1, respectively, which was significantly higher than that of the untreated CT (2.1 mg g−1). A linear relationship between NH3 uptake and concentration of acidic surface functional groups was found (R2 = 0.99). Spectroscopic analysis showed that NH3 can be retained on the oxidized CT through chemisorption involving carboxylic groups, leading to the formation of amides. Kinetic studies in the temperature range of 200–300 °C revealed an activation energy of 50.2 kJ mol−1 for the formation of acidic surface functional groups on CTs. These comparably mild conditions for the oxidative surface modification make CTs versatile and readily available materials for reducing agricultural NH3 emissions.

23. A global synthesis of soil denitrification: Driving factors and mitigation strategies

Abstract

Dinitrogen (N2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) produced via denitrification may represent major nitrogen (N) loss in terrestrial ecosystems. A global assessment of soil denitrification rate, N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio, and their driving factors and mitigation strategies is lacking. We conducted a global synthesis using 225 studies (3367 observations) to fill this knowledge gap. We found that daily N loss through soil denitrification varied with ecosystems and averaged 0.25 kg N ha−1. The average emission factor of denitrification (EFD) was 4.8%. The average N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio from soil denitrification was 0.33. Soil denitrification rate was positively related to soil water-filled pore space (WFPS) (p < 0.01), nitrate (NO3-) content (p < 0.05) and soil temperature (p < 0.01), and decreased with higher soil oxygen content (p < 0.01). N2 emissions increased with latitude (p < 0.05), WFPS (p < 0.01) and soil mineral N (p < 0.05) but decreased with soil oxygen content (p < 0.05). The N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio increased with soil oxygen content (p < 0.01) but decreased with organic carbon (C) (p < 0.05), C/N ratio (p < 0.01), soil pH (p < 0.05) and WFPS (p < 0.01). We also found that optimizing N application rates, using ammonium-based fertilizers compared to nitrate-based fertilizers, biochar amendment, and application of nitrification inhibitors could effectively reduce soil denitrification rate and associated N2 emissions. These findings highlight that N loss via soil denitrification and N2 emissions cannot be neglected, and that mitigation strategies should be adopted to reduce N loss and improve N use efficiency. Our study presents a comprehensive data synthesis for large-scale estimations of denitrification and the refinement of relevant parameters used in the submodels of denitrification in process-based models.

25. Costs and benefits of ammonia abatement in Australia

Abstract

The abatement of ammonia (NH3) emissions has attracted much attention globally given its increasingly dominant roles in ecosystem sustainability and human health. The potential, costs and benefits of NH3 abatement in Australia, the driest inhabited continent in the world, are less known. We mapped the latest spatial-temporal NH3 emissions in Australia and assessed the feasibility of NH3 abatement. Results show that annual NH3 emissions in Australia ranged 1.2–1.4 Tg N yr-1 in response to agricultural activities and climate variability during 2014–2019. Intensive animal and cropping systems occupy ∼13% of Australia's land but contribute 60% of NH3 emissions. The mitigation potential of Australian agricultural NH3 emissions is 32% (21–47%), with implementation cost estimated at 0.3 (0.1–0.9) billion US dollars (USD), equivalent to only one-tenth of the total mitigation benefit at 3.1 (0.5–7.6) billion USD. The societal benefits of mitigating NH3 emissions in terms of ecosystem sustainability (0.6–6.2 billion USD) are higher than human health benefits (0.8–1.9 billion USD) due to the small human population and the uniqueness and significance of Australia's biodiversity. Mitigating NH3 emissions in Australia should be prioritized to the animal and cropping systems to achieve the low-hanging fruit. Cost-effectiveness mitigation of NH3 will require integration with the current climate policy.

26. A numerical study of gas explosion with progressive venting in a utility tunnel

Abstract

A numerical model of a progressive vented gas explosion is presented. A CFD tool in combination with correlation analysis and an artificial neural network (ANN) were utilized to establish and refine the numerical model. The experimental results of 44 fixed vented gas explosions and one progressive vented gas explosion with moving obstacles were used to validate the numerical accuracy. The results indicated that the method to estimate the activation pressure of the pressure relief panels for a fixed vented gas explosion achieved a lower overpressure prediction compared to that for a progressive vented gas explosion. The progressive venting procedure was modelled by two-layer pressure relief panels with the upper layer having activation pressures with a linear ascent trend. The vents on the tunnel had an insignificant impact on the explosion load after being lifted over the tunnel top, and their falling process was unnecessary to be modelled. A non-negligible impact of the obstacles inside the tunnel on the flow field upon being pushed away from their initial positions was demonstrated. By employing an ANN, the critical parameters in the numerical model were determined, which were used to accurately replicate the experimental results. Abstract

H2 production by sorption enhanced steam reforming (SESR) of bio-oil/biogas blends was demonstrated in a fluidized bed reactor. It combines steam reforming (SR) with simultaneous CO2 capture by a solid sorbent. SESR was performed on a Pd/Ni-Co catalyst derived from a hydrotalcite-like material (HT) using dolomite as CO2 sorbent. Bio-oil from fast pyrolysis of biomass is a carbon–neutral and renewable energy source with great potential for clean H2 production by steam reforming processes. Biogas is also a promising renewable bio-based resource for hydrogen generation that can be used to increase the H2 production of a biomass-based plant. In turn, it could improve the energy efficiency of the process due to the exothermic reaction of the CO2 contained in biogas with the sorbent. Bio-oil composed of acetic acid and acetone (1/1 mol/mol) and biogas composed of CH4 and CO2 (60/40 vol%) were used as fuels. They were blended (50 wt% bio-oil + 50 wt% CH4) to study the SESR process. Effects of temperature, steam/C molar ratio, and pressure on the process performance were evaluated. SESR results showed an effective reforming of bio-oil/biogas blends and an enhancement in the H2 production and fuel conversion compared to conventional SR. Higher temperature and steam/C ratio, but lower pressure, favored H2 yield and purity. High H2 yield (87.1%) and H2 purity (98.6 vol%) were obtained at 625 °C and 2.5 bar (steam/C molar ratio three times higher than the stoichiometric value). The thermodynamic energy analysis of the SESR of bio-oil/biogas blends rendered 1.34% higher cold gas efficiency (CGE) than bio-oil SESR.

Abstract

Wheat (Triticum spp.) is among the world's most widely grown crops and receives large quantities of nitrogen (N) fertiliser. Grain protein content (GPC) is influenced by genetic, agronomic and weather conditions affecting crops’ physiological status and stress levels; accurate GPC prediction has potential to reduce N losses and improve profit. Success in GPC estimation from remotely sensed plant traits has been limited. For progress to be made, it is necessary to robustly identify imaging spectroscopy-based physiological traits most closely associated with GPC in both experimental and commercial contexts. We present results from piloted hyperspectral flights and ground campaigns at two dryland field experiments with divergent water supply and wide-ranging N treatments, and from two years’ flights over 17 commercial fields planted to either bread (T. aestivum) or durum (T. durum) wheat, in the southern Australian wheat belt. Imagery was acquired with airborne hyperspectral and thermal sensors, with spatial resolutions of approx. 0.3 m and 0.5 m for experimental plots and 1 m/1.7 m in commercial fields. Leaf clip measurements, leaf and grain samples were collected and, in commercial fields, ∼40,000 records obtained from harvester-mounted protein monitors. Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI), solar-induced fluorescence (SIF), reflectance indices and PRO4SAIL radiative transfer model inverted parameters were retrieved for each plot and GPC record location. The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) related to xanthophyll pigments was consistently associated with GPC at both leaf and canopy scale in the plots and transect. In the commercial crops, a gradient boosted machine learning algorithm (GBM) ranked CWSI as the strongest indicator of GPC under severe water stress, while SIF, PRI and inverted biochemical constituents anthocyanins and carotenoids were consistently important under more benign conditions. Abstract

Reconfigurable antennas are becoming a major antenna technology for future wireless communications and sensing systems. It is known that, with a single linear polarization (LP) reconfigurable antenna element, a preferred polarization can be produced from a set of multiple polarization states, thus improving the quality of the communication link. This paper presents a new concept of a polarization programmable reconfigurable antenna array that consists of a number of polarization reconfigurable antenna elements with a finite number of possible polarization states. By employing a new optimization strategy and programming the polarization states of all the array elements, we demonstrate that it is possible to realize any desired LP in the vectorial array radiation pattern with accurate control of sidelobe and cross-polarization levels (XPLs), thereby achieving the desired polarization to perfectly match that of the required communications signal. Both numerical and experimental results are provided to prove the concept, and they agree well with each other.

Abstract

Aggregates are the most extracted material resources by weight worldwide. As an important resource for buildings and infrastructure, aggregates, however, are now facing shortages and are associated with negative environmental and social impacts. More attention is now paid to the sand and gravel issues, however, recent investigations are often found ambiguous in definition or adopting over-simplified accounting methodology. To bridge the knowledge gap, first, we conducted a detailed literature investigation to clarify the associated terms. Then we established a systematic material flow and stock accounting framework to map the social metabolism of aggregate resources for the largest aggregates consumer and producer—China. Our results show during 1978–2018, the inflows of China's aggregates increased by 13 times (1.3 to 17.3 billion tons) and the stocks increased by 15 times (18.3 to 285.5 billion tons). We observed both aggregate inflows and stocks have shown a relative decoupling from economic growth. Around 2014, inflows entered a platform area and the dominated consuming sector shifted from buildings to infrastructure. Due to supply shortages and policy interventions, the source of primary supply sees a sustainable transition: manufactured aggregates (instead of natural aggregates) gradually dominated, accounting for 78% of the total primary supply in 2018. Additionally, regarding accumulated stocks of aggregates, it is expected to see rapid growth of aggregate waste in the near future. It is essential to foster a well-functioned circular system to achieve the sustainable development of the aggregate industry.

Abstract

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a potent chemical compound that can induce liver cells necrosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hepatic toxicity of CCl4 exposure in Macaca fascicularis to explore the liver toxicity mechanism using a proteomic approach. One animal (no.F6) was intoxicated by oral gavage with 15 % CCl4 solution (10 mL/kg, dissolved in edible peanut oil), and was sacrificed at 48 h after CCl4 administration. Another blank control animal (no.F4) was sacrificed at the same time. The liver cells of the blank control animal showed normal hepatocyte morphology. However, the hepatocytes at 48 h time point after CCl4 administration showed necrosis and vacuolation histopathologically. The animal No.F7∼F12 and no.M7∼M12 were administrated by gavage with 15 % CCl4 solution (10 mL/kg, dissolved in edible peanut oil). Blood samples were collected before gavage administration, and served as the 0 h blank control samples. Then, blood samples were collected at 2 h, 48 h, 72 h and 168 h after CCl4 exposure, and served as the test samples. Routine biochemistry and immunical parameters were performed using biochemistry analyzer for all serum. Then the serum from male and female animals at 0 h, 2 h, 48 h, and 72 h was mixed, respectively. The peripheral serum proteins at 0 h, 2 h, 48 h, and 72 h were extracted, then the proteins were enzymatically hydrolyzed and the peptides were isotopic labeled by isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ). Finally, the UniProt Protein Sequence Library of Macaca fascicularis was queried to identify and compare the differential proteins between different time points. The results showed that, as traditional biomarkers of liver injury, alanine aminotransferases (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferases (AST) showed a typical time-effect curve. Abstract

Underground small indoor gymnasiums (USIG) are important public places, it is vital to design and build a very economical and efficient ventilation system for effective closed-loop regulation of temperature and gases concentration at prescribed levels. In the article, the model-based prototype design, establishment and operation were proposed and applied to closed-loop control system of the underground small indoor gymnasiums’ ventilation system (USIGVS). First of all, the extended Multiphysics model was developed through feedback connecting the 3D Multiphysics model of air flow rate, temperature, O2 and CO2 concentration with a 0D proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller via Neumann boundary condition, hence a close-loop USIGVS was constructed for feedback control of temperature and gases concentration in ping-pong USIG. Simultaneously, a cost function sufficiently representing the design requirement was formulated. Then global parameter sensitivity analysis (GPSA) was applied for sensitivity ranking of parameters including geometric parameters of USIGVS and tunable parameters of PID controller. The GPSA proved that sensitivity ordering of the cost function to each parameter was proportional gain (kp) > derivative gain (kd) > distance from left inlet to bottom (r) > distance from outlet pipe to bottom (d) > integrative gain (ki) > distance from upper inlet pipe to left (h), respectively, and the kp, kd and r was the parameter influencing the cost function the most. The optimal parameters determined by both GPSA and response optimization were kp = 3.17 m4 mol−1 s−1, kd = 1.49 m4 mol−1, r = 2.04 m, d = 3.12 m, ki = 0.37 m4 mol−1 s−2 and h = 3.85 m. Finally, the closed-loop USIGVS prototype with optimal parameters was designed and established through real-time simulation. The real-time operation confirmed that the temperature and gases concentrations were robust maintained at prescribed levels with desired dynamic response characteristics and lower power consumption, and the expected requirements were achieved for the design, establishment and operation of closed-loop USIGVS control system prototype.

Abstract

The transport of live aquaculture species, both throughout the culture period and during marketing as live products, is far from optimized. In wet transports, the bottleneck is the total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) concentration that develops in the transport water. The effect of actively removing TAN from the water on the survival of fish and crabs during wet transport is herein reported. The TAN concentration was controlled by exchanging NH4+ with Na+ using self-synthesized polymer-coated zinc-hexa-cyanoferrate (Zn-HCF) cation-exchange material. Theoretical simulation followed by empirical experiments were carried out to mimic the transports of Gilthead seabream and European Brown crab, in the presence and absence of Zn-HCF. The Zn-HCF proved very efficient: while the TAN concentration in the seabream test tanks did not exceed the predetermined 5 mgN/L value (throughout the work), the control tanks showed much higher values. In the Brown Crab experiment the control had to be stopped after 2.3 days to avoid animal welfare issues, while the test completed the full 4.8 d. Yet, the crabs from the Test tanks exhibited much higher survival rates following 24 and 48 h dry packing. The results show unequivocally that the addition of Zn-HCF to wet transfer tanks can improve the vitality of the shipped animals, allow to extend the transfer periods and/or increase the shipment density.

Summary: CD8+ T cells are rendered exhausted in tumor and chronic infection. Among heterogeneous exhausted T cells, a subpopulation of progenitor-like (Tpex) cells have been found important for long-term tumor or pathogen control and are also the main responders in immunotherapy. Using an RFP reporter mouse for the orphan nuclear receptor NR4A1, originally characterized as critical in T cell dysfunction, we discover that the reporter is highly expressed in Tpex cells in tumor and chronic infection. Enforced expression of Nr4a1 promotes Tpex cell accumulation, whereas tumor control is improved after Nr4a1 deletion, associated with increased effector function but decreased long-term maintenance of CD8+ T cells. Integrating chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq) and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis, NR4A1 is found to bind and promote the expression of Tpex-related genes, as well as suppress terminal differentiation-associated genes. This study therefore has identified a key role of NR4A1 in Tpex regulation and provides a promising target for immunotherapy.

Abstract

China has been continuously improving its monitoring methods and strategies to address key infectious diseases (KIDs). After the severe acute respiratory syndrome epidemic in 2003, China established a comprehensive reporting system for infectious diseases (IDs) and public health emergencies. The relatively lagging warning thresholds, limited warning information, and outdated warning technology are insufficient to meet the needs of comprehensive monitoring for modern KIDs. Strengthening early monitoring and warning capabilities to enhance the public health system has become a top priority, with increasing demand for early warning thresholds, information, and techniques, thanks to constant innovation and development in molecular biology, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and other identification and analysis technologies. A panel of 31 experts has recommended a fourth-generation comprehensive surveillance system targeting KIDs (41 notifiable diseases and emerging IDs). The aim of this surveillance system is to systematically monitor the epidemiology and causal pathogens of KIDs in hosts such as humans, animals, and vectors, along with associated environmental pathogens. By integrating factors influencing epidemic spread and risk assessment, the surveillance system can serve to detect, predict, and provide early warnings for the occurrence, development, variation, and spread of known or novel KIDs. Moreover, we recommend comprehensive ID monitoring based on the fourth-generation surveillance system, along with a data-integrated monitoring and early warning platform and a consortium pathogen detection technology system. This series of considerations is based on systematic and comprehensive monitoring across multiple sectors, dimensions, factors, and pathogens that is supported by data integration and connectivity. This expert consensus will provides an opportunity for collaboration in various fields and relies on interdisciplinary application to enhance comprehensive monitoring, prediction, and early warning capabilities for the next generation of ID surveillance. This expert consensus will serve as a reference for ID prevention and control as well as other related activities.

Abstract

Histone acetyltransferases (HATs) are essential enzymes that are, among others, involved in the epigenetic regulation of gene transcription. They exert their functions through acetylation of both histone and nonhistone proteins and are often part of multiprotein complexes. This chapter mainly discusses recent studies on the functions of HATs in diseases and their utility as potential drug targets. Furthermore, this chapter describes the recent progress in the development of small-molecule HAT modulators and their therapeutic potential. Dysregulation of HAT-mediated acetylation of histone and nonhistone proteins contributes to the pathogenesis and progression of many diseases, such as cancers, inflammatory diseases, and neurological disorders. In recent years, a variety of HAT modulators has been developed, including inhibitors and activators of HAT catalytic activity. Furthermore, inhibitors of HAT protein-protein interactions were developed such as inhibitors of HAT bromodomains. An interesting novel development in HAT-directed drug discovery is the development of proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) that trigger proteasome-mediated degradation of HAT proteins. Taken together, these studies demonstrate that HAT proteins are versatile and promising targets for drug discovery.

Abstract

Background: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are increasingly relevant endpoints in clinical trials, contributing to our understanding of risk-benefit profiles, in addition to efficacy and safety data. We investigated the impact of entrectinib on patient-reported symptoms, functioning, and health-related quality of life. Patients and methods: STARTRK-2 is a phase II basket study in patients with locally advanced/metastatic neurotrophic receptor tyrosine kinase 1/2/3 (NTRK1/2/3) and ROS proto-oncogene 1 (ROS1) fusion-positive solid tumours. PROs (prespecified secondary endpoint) were evaluated using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality-of-life questionnaire (QLQ-C30), lung cancer module (Q1Q-LC13), and colorectal cancer module (QLQ-CR29), and the EuroQoL 5-Dimension 3-Level instruments, completed before cycle 1 day 1 and each subsequent 4week cycle of entrectinib dosing, and the end of treatment. Adverse events and treatment-related symptoms were assessed in the safety analysis (SA)-PRO population. Tumour-related symptoms, functioning, and global health status were assessed in the efficacy analysis (EA)-PRO population. Data cut-offs: 31 October 2018 NTRK cohort; 01 May 2019 ROS1 cohort. Results: SA-PRO populations comprised patients with NTRK fusion-positive solid tumours (N = 88) or ROS1 fusion- positive non-small-cell lung cancer (N = 180) who received one or more doses of entrectinib, completed PRO questionnaires on cycle 1 day 1 and answered one or more questions on-study. EA-PRO populations (N = 71) and (N = 145), respectively, comprised SA-PRO patients with measurable baseline disease. Moderate-to-high baseline global health status scores were maintained in EA-PRO populations during treatment. Role and physical functioning scores were moderate-to-high at baseline, with trends towards clinical improvement during treatment. Abstract

Vertebral labelling and segmentation are two fundamental tasks in an automated spine processing pipeline. Reliable and accurate processing of spine images is expected to benefit clinical decision support systems for diagnosis, surgery planning, and population-based analysis of spine and bone health. However, designing automated algorithms for spine processing is challenging predominantly due to considerable variations in anatomy and acquisition protocols and due to a severe shortage of publicly available data. Addressing these limitations, the Large Scale Vertebrae Segmentation Challenge (VerSe) was organised in conjunction with the International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) in 2019 and 2020, with a call for algorithms tackling the labelling and segmentation of vertebrae. Two datasets containing a total of 374 multi-detector CT scans from 355 patients were prepared and 4505 vertebrae have individually been annotated at voxel level by a human-machine hybrid algorithm (https://osf.io/nqjyw/, https://osf.io/t98fz/). A total of 25 algorithms were benchmarked on these datasets. In this work, we present the results of this evaluation and further investigate the performance variation at the vertebra level, scan level, and different fields of view. We also evaluate the generalisability of the approaches to an implicit domain shift in data by evaluating the top-performing algorithms of one challenge iteration on data from the other iteration. The principal takeaway from VerSe: the performance of an algorithm in labelling and segmenting a spine scan hinges on its ability to correctly identify vertebrae in cases of rare anatomical variations. Abstract

We report results on the total and elastic cross sections in proton-proton collisions at s=200 GeV obtained with the Roman Pot setup of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elastic differential cross section was measured in the squared four-momentum transfer range 0.045≤−t≤0.135 GeV$^{2}$. The value of the exponential slope parameter B of the elastic differential cross section dσ/dt∼e−Bt in the measured −t range was found to be B=14.32±0.09(stat.)−0.28+0.13(syst.) GeV$^{−2}$. The total cross section σtot, obtained from extrapolation of the dσ/dt to the optical point at −t=0, is σtot=54.67±0.21(stat.)−1.38+1.28(syst.) mb. We also present the values of the elastic cross section σel=10.85±0.03(stat.)−0.41+0.49(syst.) mb, the elastic cross section integrated within the STAR t-range σeldet=4.05±0.01(stat.)−0.17+0.18(syst.) mb, and the inelastic cross section σinel=43.82±0.21(stat.)−1.44+1.37(syst.) mb. The results are compared with the world data.

Abstract

Flow harmonics (vn) of the Fourier expansion for the azimuthal distributions of hadrons are commonly employed to quantify the azimuthal anisotropy of particle production relative to the collision symmetry planes. While lower order Fourier coefficients (v2 and v3) are more directly related to the corresponding eccentricities of the initial state, the higher-order flow harmonics (vn>3) can be induced by a mode-coupled response to the lower-order anisotropies, in addition to a linear response to the same-order anisotropies. These higher-order flow harmonics and their linear and mode-coupled contributions can be used to more precisely constrain the initial conditions and the transport properties of the medium in theoretical models. The multiparticle azimuthal cumulant method is used to measure the linear and mode-coupled contributions in the higher-order anisotropic flow, the mode-coupled response coefficients, and the correlations of the event plane angles for charged particles as functions of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy sNN= 200 GeV. The results are compared to similar LHC measurements as well as to several viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying initial conditions.

Abstract

H2 production from biogas (60%CH4 + 40%CO2) by sorption enhanced steam reforming (SESR) was thermodynamically and experimentally studied in a fluidized bed reactor. Biogas is an interesting renewable biomass resource for hydrogen production due to its sustainable nature. SESR combines the catalytic reforming reaction of biogas with simultaneous CO2 removal in a single step. A Pd/Ni–Co hydrotalcite-like material (HT) was used as catalyst and dolomite as CO2 sorbent. The effects of temperature (550–800 °C), steam/CH4 molar ratio (2–6) and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) (492–3937 mL CH4 gcat−1 h−1) on the process performance were evaluated. CO2 in biogas was effectively removed by the sorbent from the gas phase at 550–700 °C, without influencing the reforming process. H2 yield increased with temperature from 550 to 650 °C, but H2 concentration decreased at temperatures higher than 600 °C, requiring a tradeoff between both parameters to select an optimum operating temperature. H2 purity of 98.4 vol% was obtained at 550–600 °C and H2 yield of 92.7% was reached at 650 °C. Higher steam/CH4 ratios enhance the process, whereas higher space velocities decrease H2 yield. Results demonstrate that high-purity high-yield biohydrogen can be produced by the SESR of a renewable biomass resource as biogas.
