The world human population is more and more urban and cities have a strong impact on the biosphere. This explains the development of urban ecology. In this context, the goal of our work is fourfold: to describe the diversity of scientific questions in urban ecology, show how these questions are organized, to assess how these questions can be built in close interactions with stakeholders, to better understand the role urban ecology can play within ecological sciences. A workshop with scientists from all relevant fields (from ecology to sociology) and stakeholders was organized by the Foundation for Research on Biodiversity (FRB). Three types of scientific issues were outlined about (1) the biodiversity of organisms living in urban areas, (2) the functioning of urban organisms and ecosystems, (3) interactions between human societies and urban ecological systems. For all types of issues we outlined it was possible to distinguish both fundamental and applied scientific questions. This allowed building a unique research agenda encompassing all possible types of scientific issues in urban ecology. As all types of ecological and evolutionary questions can be asked in urban areas, urban ecology will likely be more and more influential in the development of ecology. Taken together, the future of towns, their biodiversity and the life of city dwellers is at stake. Increasing the space for ecosystems and biodiversity within towns is more and more viewed as crucial for the well-being of town dwellers. Depending on research and the way its results are taken into account, very different towns could emerge. To meet new regulations, alternative plasticizers to di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) are now commonly used in the manufacturing of medical devices. These are: acetyl tri-n-butyl citrate (ATBC), bis (2-ethylhexyl)adipate (DEHA), dioctyl terephtalate (DEHT), di-isononylphtalate (DINP), diisononylcyclohexane-1.2-dicarboxylate (DINCH) and trioctyltrimellilate (TOTM). An HPLC-UV analysis was previously developed to characterize four of them. However, two compounds were systematically co-eluated: DEHP with DEHA and DEHT with DINP. The first derivative of UV spectra and photodiode array detection allow the quantification of DEHA and DINP. Moreover, for each plasticizer, maximum wavelength absorbance was chosen to be as specific as possible. Quantification ranged from 0.3 to 750µg/mL according to the plasticizer. The assays were validated by analysis of variance. Our method was validated by determining the following parameters: specificity, linearity, limits of detection and quantification. The relative biases were inferior to 5% for ATBC, DEHP, DEHA and DINCH and inferior to 10% for DEHT, DINP and TOTM. Plasticizers were extracted with tetrahydrofuran and methanol. The developed method was then used to determine the composition of plasticizers in several medical devices used in clinical service. A wide variety of medical devices (MDs) used in hospitals are made of flexible plasticized polyvinylchloride (PVC). Different plasticizers are present in variable amounts in the PVC matrix of the devices and can leach out into the infused solutions and may enter into contact with the patients. The ARMED 1 project aims to assess the migration of these plasticizers from medical devices and therefore the level of exposure in patients. For the first task of the project, eight methods were developed to directly detect and quantify the plasticizers in the PVC matrix of the MDs. We compared the overall performances of the analytical methods using standardized and validated criteria in order to provide the scientific community with the guidance and the technical specifications of each method for the intended application. We have shown that routine rapid screening could be performed directly on the MDs using the FTIR technique, with cost-effective analyses. LC techniques may also be used, but with limits and only with individual quantification of the main plasticizers expected in the PVC matrix. GC techniques, especially GC-MS, are both more specific and more sensitive than other techniques. NMR is a robust and specific technique to precisely discriminate all plasticizers in a MD but is limited by its cost and its low ability to detect and quantify plasticizer contamination, e.g. by DEHP. Searching for alternatives to di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate, a plasticizer that has been widely used in the manufacturing of PVC medical devices, has become a major challenge since a European regulation underlined some clinical risks. The aim of this study is to develop an HPLC-UV method to quantify the currently used alternative plasticizers to DEHP. Five plasticizers, acetyl tributyl citrate, di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate, di-(ethylhexyl)-terephthalate, di-isononyl-1,2-cyclohexane-dicarboxylate, and trioctyl trimellitate, were separated on a C8 stationary phase (2.6 μm, 100 mm × 4.6mm) under gradient elution in 13 min. They were detected at 221 nm leading to a quantification threshold from 0.3 to 750 μg/mL as a function of the plasticizer. Within-day and between-day precisions were inferior to 0.9% and 18%, respectively. The assays were validated according to the accuracy profile method. Plasticizers were extracted from PVC-tubing by dissolving PVC in THF then precipitating it in methanol with a yield of over 90% for each plasticizer. Objectives: Noradrenaline (NA) can be infused through various systems including single or double syringe pumps. The aim of this study was to define the best and most efficient infusion system in an emergency context., Study Design: This was a retrospective clinical study based on the analysis of patients' hemodynamic data., Patients and Method: Three infusion lines used presently in our postoperative ICU were compared through a retrospective clinical study: an NA syringe pump at 2mL/h and a saline carrier solution syringe pump at 8mL/h (infusion system 1- IS1) or 5mL/h (IS2), both connected to a very low dead-space volume set (V=0.046mL); IS3 with the same NA syringe at 2mL/h directly connected to the central venous catheter. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) was obtained from retrospective data analysis of ICU patients with postoperative septic shock criteria. Infusion systems were compared according to the time required to reach an MAP greater than 65mmHg after the onset of infusion., Results: Data from 37 patients was analysed. The MAP objective was attained in 14:00 minutes (9:20 - 26:10, n=15) with IS1, in 19:10 minutes (12:20 - 27:20, n=13) with IS2 and in 34:10 minutes (23:10 - 62:30, n=9) with IS3 (P=0.00032)., Conclusion: The use of a double syringe pump system associated with a very low dead-space volume infusion set appears to be the most appropriate system for NA infusion., (Copyright © 2013 Société française d’anesthésie et de réanimation (Sfar). Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a group of developmental disorders caused by environmental and genetic factors. Diagnosis is based on behavioral and developmental signs detected before 3 years of age with no reliable biological marker. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential use of a 2D NMR-based approach to express the global biochemical signature of autistic individuals compared to normal controls. This technique has greater spectral resolution than to 1D (1)H NMR spectroscopy, which is limited by overlapping signals. The urinary metabolic profiles of 30 autistic and 28 matched healthy children were obtained using a (1)H-(13)C NMR-based approach. The data acquired were processed by multivariate orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). Some discriminating metabolites were identified: β-alanine, glycine, taurine and succinate concentrations were significatively higher, and creatine and 3-methylhistidine concentrations were lower in autistic children than in controls. We also noted differences in several other metabolites that were unidentified but characterized by a cross peak correlation in (1)H-(13)C HSQC. Statistical models of (1)H and (1)H-(13)C analyses were compared and only 2D spectra allowed the characterization of statistically relevant changes [R(2)Y(cum)=0.78 and Q(2)(cum)=0.60] in the low abundance metabolites. This method has the potential to contribute to the diagnosis of neurodevelopment disorders but needs to be validated on larger cohorts and on other developmental disorders to define its specificity., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Objective: Stopping and restarting carrier fluid flow and performing simultaneous drug infusions can lead to hazardous disturbances in drug delivery. The present study was designed to assess in vitro whether using a multi-lumen infusion access device could prevent noradrenaline disturbances., Study Design: In vitro laboratory work., Methods: Two infusion devices were studied: a standard device with a four-port manifold and a 150cm extension line and a nine-lumen infusion device (Edelvaiss-Multiline(®)) with eight accesses connected to nine separate lumens in a single tube of 150cm: seven accesses connected to seven peripheral lumens and one for the carrier fluid access connected to two lumens. Two experimental protocols of noradrenaline infusion were made: (a) drug flow rate change and (b) stop-and-go carrier fluid flows. Two parameters were studied: drug mass flow rate and flow change efficiency (FCE) calculated from the ratio of the area under the experimental mass flow rate curve to the area under the theoretical instantaneous mass flow rate curve., Results: Variations in noradrenaline mass flow rate were more rapid with the Edelvaiss-Multiline(®) when the noradrenaline infusion rate was increased or decreased. FCE was significantly different from one infusion device to the other during both noradrenaline flow rate increase (standard vs. nine-lumen: 58% vs. 84%; P=0.008) and decrease (175% vs. 108%; P=0.008). Decreased drug delivery after stopping carrier fluid flow (standard vs. nine-lumen: 21% vs. 98%; P=0.008) and sudden temporary increases on resumption (253% vs. 103%; P=0.008) were reduced in magnitude and duration when using the Edelvaiss-Multiline(®) with a significant difference in FCE between the two infusion devices., Conclusions: Using the nine-lumen infusion device reduces drug delivery disturbances during continuous intravenous infusion., (Copyright © 2013 Société française d’anesthésie et de réanimation (Sfar). Background: Pathogenic mutations in the X-linked Neuroligin 4 gene (NLGN4X) in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and/or mental retardation (MR) are rare. However, nothing is known regarding a possible altered expression level of NLGN4X that would be caused by mutations in regulatory sequences. We investigated this issue by analyzing these regions in patients with ASDs and no mutation in the NLGN4X coding sequence., Methods: We studied 96 patients who met all DSM-IV criteria for autism. The entire coding sequence and the regulatory sequences of the NLGN4X gene were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing., Results: We identified a de novo 1 base pair (-335G>A) substitution located in the promoter region in a patient with autism and nonsyndromic profound MR. Interestingly, this variation is associated with an increased level of the NLGN4X transcript in the patient compared with male control subjects as well as his father. Further in vitro luciferase reporter and electrophoretic mobility shift assays confirmed, respectively, that this mutation increases gene expression and is probably caused by altered binding of transcription factors in the mutated promoter sequence., Conclusions: This result brings further insight about the phenotypic spectrum of NLGN4X mutations and suggests that the analysis of the expression level of NLGN4X might detect new cases.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate in healthy adults the electrophysiological correlates of auditory-visual interactions involved in perception of bimodal events in a no-task paradigm., Methods: Event-related potentials were recorded in response to unimodal auditory (A), unimodal visual (V) and bimodal (AV) stimuli. Cross-modal interactions were estimated using the additive [AV-(A+V)] model., Results: The spatio-temporal analysis of ERPs and scalp current densities revealed several interaction patterns occurring at both early and late stages of sensory cortical processing: (1) amplitude decrease of the unimodal auditory N1 wave as early as 55ms, (2) amplitude increase of the unimodal auditory P2 wave from 150 to 195ms concomitant with new neural activity over the right fronto-temporal region, and (3) amplitude increase of the late unimodal visual response within 245-350ms post-stimulus., Conclusions: Our study provides evidence that several patterns of cross-modal interactions can be generated even if no task is required from subjects., Significance: The paradigm used here can thus be utilized for studying the maturation of the cross-modal processes in young children and in children with pathological development.

Aim: To investigate the rate and topological profile of minor physical anomalies (MPAs) (prenatal errors of morphogenesis) in a group of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), in order to better set a temporal framing of embryological factors involved in the neurodevelopmental etiology., Method: A new modified Waldrop scale and a mixed approach of computerized photogrammetry and classic anthroposcopy was used to detect the presence or absence of 41 MPAs in 24 children (mean age: 7 years; sex ratio: 22M:2F) with ASD and 24 healthy comparison subjects (mean age: 7 years; sex ratio: 19M:5F) selected with DSM IV and CARS., Results: We found that children with ASD presenting MPAs (n=23; 96%) had significantly higher rates of MPAs in four body areas (head, ears, mouth, hands); interestingly three of 41 MPAs best discriminated ASD groups from comparison subjects: abnormal head circumference, abnormal cephalic index, abnormal palate. Moreover, our results suggest that most MPAs occur predominantly after the first trimester of pregnancy., Conclusions: These results support a prenatal neurodevelopmental model of the autism spectrum disorder.

The HPLC semipreparative enantioseparation of 9-hydroxyrisperidone (9-OHRisp) was studied by optimizing various experimental conditions: the nature of the chiral stationary phase (CSP), mobile phase composition, temperature and analyte loading. This semipreparative enantioseparation was successfully completed using the polysaccharide Chiralcel OJ chiral stationary phase and a n-hexane/ethanol/methanol (50/35/15, v/v/v) ternary mobile phase. To assess the enantiomeric purity of both isolated isomers, three analytical methods using UV detection were developed and validated: one CE method using dual cyclodextrin mode and two HPLC methods using either the Chiralcel OJ CSP in normal-phase mode or the alpha-acid glycoprotein (alpha-AGP) CSP in reversed-phase mode. The three methods make it possible to obtain excellent enantioseparations (R(s) >3) with analysis times lower than 15 min, and the calculated limits of detection allow for the determination of minor enantiomeric impurities (0.1%). Enantiomeric purity obtained for dextrorotatory and levorotatory enantiomers was superior to 99.9% and equal to 98.9%, respectively, which proved the success of the semipreparative enantioseparation. A brief comparison of the performances of the analytical methods completes this work.

Children born preterm more than average display cognitive difficulties that are significant enough to prevent normal schooling. The aim of our study was to provide better understanding of the long-term neuropathological processes associated with preterm injury, through the hypothesis that mild cognitive disorders might be related to slight deficits in primary functions such as attention and perception. Assessment of auditory pre-attentive processes was performed by recording the obligatory sensory response (N250) and the change-detection response (Mismatch Negativity, MMN). Topographic study of these responses was performed in fifteen 9-year-old children born preterm (27-33 weeks gestational age) matched to fifteen control children born at term. The auditory stimulus sequence consisted of 1000 Hz standard and 1100 Hz deviant tones (15%) delivered binaurally with an interstimulus interval of 700 ms. The results showed that MMN was similar in both groups. Analysis of the responses to standard repetitive tones demonstrated significantly smaller N250 wave amplitude in children born preterm. Scalp current density maps showed that this reduction in amplitude was associated with lower activity of both frontal and left supratemporal generators. Although the functional significance of the N250 wave in children remains to be clarified, our results indicate a disorder of auditory processes related to prematurity that might have consequences on the development of higher-level processes.

The anhydrous sodium naproxen (ASN) can form several hydrated phases if maintained at different relative humidities (RH). The water uptake can promote crystallographic modifications, according to the amount of water. In a previous work, the authors showed that a dihydrated form could be obtained either by crystallization in water or by exposure of the anhydrous form to a RH of 55%. In the present work, the authors report about the formation and characterization of a new tetrahydrated form, obtained by exposing the ASN to RH >or= 75%. All the hydrated compounds were characterized by the combined use of several spectroscopic, thermal, and crystallographic techniques. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relations between late auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) recorded at temporal sites (the N1c wave or Tb) and verbal and non-verbal abilities in children with autism. The study was performed in 26 mentally retarded children with autism (AUT) aged 4-8 years (mean age +/- S.E.M. = 71 +/- 2 months; mean verbal and non-verbal developmental quotient +/- S.E.M. = 36 +/- 4 and 48 +/- 3). The stimuli used were 750 Hz tone bursts of 200 ms duration delivered binaurally at different intensity levels (50, 60, 70, 80 dB SPL) with 3-5 s interstimulus intervals. Temporal AEPs were first compared to those of a group of 16 normal children (NOR) in the same age range (mean age +/- S.E.M. = 69 +/- 3 months). We then focused on the AUT group and considered relations between temporal AEPs and the severity of disorders of verbal and non-verbal communication assessed using a behavior rating scale. AEPs recorded on left and right temporal sites were of smaller amplitude in the AUT group than in the NOR group. Increasing intensity-related amplitude was observed on both sides in NOR and only on the right side in AUT. The lack of intensity effect on the left side resulted in a particular pattern of asymmetry at the highest level of intensity (80 dB SPL) with greater N1c amplitude on the right than on the left side (the reverse was found in the NOR group). Electro-clinical correlations indicated that the greater the amplitude of the right temporal N1c responses, the higher the verbal and non-verbal communication abilities. This suggests a developmental reorganization of left-right hemisphere functions in autism, with preferential activation of the right hemisphere for functions usually allocated to the left hemisphere, particularly those involving the secondary auditory areas situated on the lateral surface of the superior temporal gyrus where the N1c/Tb wave is generated.

Objectives: Auditory processing at the cortical level was investigated with late auditory evoked potentials (N1 wave-T complex) in 4-8-year-old autistic children with mental retardation and compared to both age-matched normal and mentally retarded children (16 children in each group)., Methods: Two negative peaks which occurred in the 80-200 ms latency range were analyzed according to stimulus intensity level (50 to 80 dB SPL): the first culminated at fronto-central sites (N1b) and the second at bitemporal sites (N1c, equivalent to Tb of the T complex). The latter wave was the most prominent and reliable response in normal children at this age., Results: Our results in autistic children indicated abnormalities of this wave with markedly smaller amplitude at bitemporal sites and pronounced peak latency delay (around 20 ms). Moreover, in both reference groups the intensity effect was found on both sides whereas in autistic children it was absent on the left side but present on the right., Conclusion: These findings in autistic children showing very disturbed verbal communication argue for dysfunction in brain areas involved in N1c generation i.e., the auditory associative cortex in the lateral part of the superior temporal gyrus, with more specific left side defects when auditory stimulus have to be processed.

To study the relationships between clinical and biological data that are necessary for physiopathological analysis in the field of developmental disorders, we developed a quantified grouping system, based on four developmental assessment parameters. Parallel with this clinical research, we developed electrophysiological procedures adapted to the pathology of autism. In this paper, we report the utilization of an original multivariate descriptive statistical approach (correspondence analysis followed by cluster analysis) that allowed us to identify different bioclinical profiles using these clinical and electrophysiological data conjointly. These profiles are believed to be evidence for different underlying cerebral dysfunctions. This procedure proved effective in identifying two main bioclinical dimensions in a population of 145 developmentally disordered children. These dimensions reflect the association of intellectual impairment and centroparietal electrophysiological reactivity on the one hand, and autistic behavior and temporal electrophysiological reactivity on the other. This study, performed on a large population of children using objective methods of data analysis, provides validation of numerous multidisciplinary studies of autism and other developmental disorders carried out on small samples of children.

Family studies and epidemiologic data in autism show the involvement of genetic factors in the etiology of this syndrome. The frequent association of X chromosome with mental retardation and behavior disturbances raises the question of its implication in the etiology of autism. Several markers of X chromosome were tested in autistic and control populations by association study. The autistic population was submitted to an extensive clinical examination. For the DXS287 marker, chi 2 analysis showed a different allele distribution between control and patient groups. This difference was enhanced when children with the most severe autistic behaviors and the least serious cognitive disorders were selected for statistical comparison. To our knowledge, this is the first association study described using markers of X chromosome in infantile autism. These preliminary results encourage our research on this chromosome, which could be considered as a significant genetic component of the multifactorial etiology of autism.

Objective: To assess the presence of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) using colloid contrast transoesophageal echocardiography in mechanically ventilated patient with and without PEEP and it repercussion on PaO2., Study Design: Prospective open before-after trial., Patients: Forty-nine mechanically ventilated patients with respiratory failure (PaO2/FiO2 < 250)., Methods: PEEP assessment before and after adding a PEEP = 10 cmH2O. At each level of PEEP, semi-quantification of PFO was performed and arterial blood gases were withdrawn at FiO2 = 1, with 15 min at each level. Semi-quantification of the right-to-left intra cardiac shunt through a patent foramen ovale was obtained using the quantity of microbubbles in the left atrium on a basal short axis view., Results: A PFO was detected in 11 out of 49 patients (22%). A right-to-left shunt developed in one and worsen in three patients when PEEP was added. In patients without a PFO, PaO2 increased significantly (from 119 +/- 10 mmHg to 145 +/- 10 mmHg, P < 0.001). In patients with a PFO, non significant changes occurred (118 +/- 15 mmHg to 120 +/- 17 mmHg). After adding PEEP, the difference between the two groups was significant (ANOVA, P < 0.05). Moreover, a PFO was present during the whole respiratory cycle in two out of 11 patients. These 2 patients exhibited a PaO2 < 100 mmHg with or without PEEP., Conclusion: This study suggests that mechanical ventilation with PEEP enhances an intracardiac right-to-left shunt through a PFO. This condition is responsible for the lack of improvement in blood oxygenation when PEEP is added. When a PFO is present all over the respiratory cycle, or when the oxygenation is worsened with PEEP, this positive pressure ventilation should be avoided. The deleterious consequences of mechanical ventilation on venous return may be minimized by partial ventilation and weaning from ventilator.

Endoscopic ultrasonography was performed in 80 cirrhotic patients and 50 control subjects. The aim of the study was to describe and classify the vascular abnormalities of the gastric wall as observed on echoendoscopy in cirrhotic patients and to compare the data with endoscopy. The size of gastric varices was classified into 3 grades: grade 0 (none), grade 1 (small or non-confluent varices < 5 mm), grade 2 (large or confluent varices > or = 5 mm). The abnormalities of the gastric wall were classified into 3 grades: 0 (none), grade 1 (thickening and brilliance of the third hyperechogenic layer with or without fine internal anechogenic structures), grade 2 (visible vessels in the third layer which deform the entire wall, with penetrating varices). Endoscopy provides better visualization of esophageal varices than echoendoscopy but does not detect gastric varices and the first signs of portal hypertension as well. In conclusion echoendoscopy should be a routine examination for screening portal hypertension in cirrhotic patients and could be used in therapeutic follow-up.

The Peutz-Jeghers syndrome includes periorificial melanin spots and digestive adenoma, transmitted according to an autosomal dominant mode. We report on a case discovered in a 13 year-old girl presenting with anaemia.

Dopamine (DA) and its metabolites homovanillic acid (HVA) in total, free and conjugated forms, dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) in total, free and conjugated forms, and 3 methoxytyramine (3 MT) levels were determined in the urine of autistic children from 2 years 8 months to 12 years of age and compared to those in normal children of identical age. Very significant group and age effects were found for DA, HVA and 3 MT. In the discussion, results are related to the hypothesis of a disorder in the maturation of the dopaminergic systems in infantile autism.

This study evaluates the amplitudes of auditory evoked responses and the variability of evoked responses, using a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) method applied to individual evoked potential in a cross-modal (sound and light) association paradigm in 17 children with autistic behavior matched for sex and chronological age with normal children. Auditory evoked responses were smaller in children with autistic behavior than in normal children. The modifications of amplitudes and of SNR during cross-modal associations allowed the separation of children with autistic behavior into 3 subgroups who presented different patterns of ability to form cross-modal associations. These 3 subgroups of children presented different clinical profiles demonstrating that the differences observed in the ability to form cross-modal associations can be related to differences in the main psychophysiological functions such as attention, intention, motility, association, contact and communication.

Esophageal lesions are often present in congenital epidermolysis bullosa. Bullae formation, ulceration and oedema ultimately will lead to stricture formation. Surgery is useful only for slowly evolutive forms. To prevent the risk of developing complete occlusion to the human of the esophagus, dilatations are performed under endoscopic control, that allows through nutrition without risk of local complication.

Unlabelled: This article describes the outcome of the pregnancies conceived after AID with frozen semen in the Tours CECOS Centre between January 1st 1988 and December 31st 1986. There were 487 (including multiple pregnancies). These have been compared with a control group and with the national study conducted by INSERM in 1981. The study of the literature allows comparisons. The rate of pregnancies not resulting in a living child is not significantly different from the control series (abortions 11.4%, ectopic pregnancies 1% and in utero fetal deaths 0.4%). Pregnancies that continued: the rate of multiple pregnancies was higher (2.7%). There were more cases of bleeding (6.8% compared with 2.4%), more hypertensions (13.3% compared with 11.6%) and the same rate of premature labour (9.4%) as in the control group. The Caesarean section rate (22% as against 6%) was higher. The rate of forcepts delivery was lower (9.2% as against 12.8%). Concerning the children we found more premature babies (15.8% versus 5.6%) but no difference in the sex ratio, their height-weight as against their term, their Apgar score, morbidity or number or type of malformations (3.4%)., In Conclusion: the quality of the children is about the same with the proviso that the group is too small to conclude about the incidence of chromosomal abnormalities.

A mixed antiglobulin reaction: M.A.R. latex test has been used to detect the presence of either IgG or IgA on the surface of spermatozoa in a selected population with spontaneous agglutination. Positive M.A.R. tests showed a highly significant correlation with the presence of antisperm antibodies in seminal plasma or serum and with sperm penetration in cervical mucus. Autoantibodies against spermatozoa were found in 4.25% of seminal fluid samples.
