The crucial role of iron (Fe) oxides in stabilizing soil organic carbon (SOC) is well recognized, but their effects on SOC mineralization remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we evaluated the effects of four typical Fe-bound OC (Fe-OC) complexes including adsorbed ferrihydrite (Fh)- and goethite (Goe)- 13 C, coprecipitated Fh/Goe- 13 C and 13 C-glucose as the control, on OC mineralization during an 80-day anaerobic incubation in a paddy soil. 13 C-tracing indicated that Fe- 13 C complexes significantly stimulated CO 2 emissions from both the input 13 C and SOC compared with glucose alone. In contrast, the addition of Fh- and Goe-C complexes consistently inhibited CH 4 emissions by 72-91 % and 21-61 % compared with glucose addition, respectively. Fe-OC complexes reduced the CO 2 equivalent by 62-71 % and 17-41 % in soils with Fh-C and Goe-C complexes, respectively. We concluded that Fe crystallinity and its bonding forms with organic carbon jointly control SOC mineralization. The coprecipitated Goe-C complexes had the lowest OC mineralization rate and highest OC residence time among four Fe-OC complexes. Biochar is a chemically recalcitrant carbon-rich solid material used in soil for its potential to improve soil quality and sequester carbon. While the rate of application has implications for soil carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and the overall benefits of biochar, its effects are yet to be fully understood. To evaluate the effect of application rates of rice husk biochar on CO2 emissions, 91-day field experiments were conducted on three soil types (Anthraquic Ustorthent, Grossarenic Kandiustalf, and Ustic Quartzipsamment) in the southern Guinea Savannah of Nigeria, using three biochar application rates of 5, 15 and 25 t h−1, and control.A two-way ANOVA showed that cumulative CO2 emissions were significantly (p < 0.01) different between soil types and treatments, and soil type/treatment interactions were also significant at p = 0.05. The highest cumulative CO2–C emission of 2.77g/m2 was recorded in the Grossarenic Kandiustalf, while the least value of 2.11g/m2 was recorded in the Ustic Quartzipsamment. CO2 emission increased with increasing biochar application rates, with the highest (3.06 CO2–C g/m2) value recorded at 25 t/ha compared to 2.78 g/m2 and 1.52 g/m2 values recorded for 5 t/ha and control treatments respectively. While CO2 emissions increased with biochar application rate however, the percentage of biochar-C mineralized was higher at lower biochar rates, and differences were significant at p = 0.01. While 0.63 % of biochar C was mineralized under 5 t/ha biochar treatment, 0.15 % was recorded for 25 t/ha treatment. Factors that had significant correlation with CO2–C emission in the soils were biochar addition rate, soil pH, N, P, Ca, Mg and K. Understanding the effects of fire history on soil processes is key to characterise their resistance and resilience under future fire events. Wildfires produce pyrogenic carbonaceous material (PCM) that is incorporated into the soil, playing a critical role in the global carbon (C) cycle, but its interactions with soil processes are poorly understood. We evaluated if the previous occurrence of wildfires modulates the dynamic of soil C and nitrogen (N) and microbial community by soil ester linked fatty acids, after a new simulated low-medium intensity fire. Soils with a different fire history (none, one, two or three fires) were heat-shocked and amended with charcoal and/or ash derived from Pinus pinaster. Soil C and N mineralization rates were measured under controlled conditions, with burned soils showing lower values than unburned (without fire for more than sixty years). In general, no effects of fire recurrence were observed for any of the studied variables. Microbial biomass was lower in burned, with a clear dominance of Gram-positive bacteria in these soils. PCM amendments increased cumulative carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) production only in previously burned soils, especially when ash was added. This contrasted response to PCM between burned and unburned soils in CO 2 production could be related to the effect of the previous wildfire history on soil microorganisms. In burned soils some microorganisms might have been adapted to the resulting conditions after a new fire event. Burned soils showed a significant positive priming effect after PCM amendment, mainly ash, probably due to an increased pH and phosphorous availability. Our results reveal the role of different PCMs as drivers of C and N mineralization processes in burned soils when a new fire occurs. Plant residue inputs play a crucial role in regulating soil carbon (C) stock and nitrogen (N) availability in cropland. However, little is known regarding how plant inputs mediate the relationships between soil C and net N mineralization, causing additional uncertainty in predicting ecosystem C and N dynamics. This study investigated the influences of long-term deprivation of plant inputs, short-term addition of maize straw and experimental warming on soil C and net N mineralization and their relationships. We conducted an 815-day laboratory incubation experiment under 10 and 20 °C using soils from a long-term bare fallow plot (without plant inputs for 23 years) and its adjacent old field plot (with continuous plant inputs). Our results showed that long-term deprivation of plant inputs decreased soil net N mineralization (per unit total N or TN) by 56% on average, but had minor effect on soil C mineralization (per unit soil organic C). Soil C and net N mineralization rates were positively correlated in the old field soil under 20 °C. However, soil C and net N mineralization rates were not correlated in the bare fallow soil, mainly due to the low level of net N mineralization. Moreover, soil C and net N mineralization rates were significantly increased by the addition of maize straw in both land-use types. When net N mineralization was <162 (or 159) μg N g -1 TN d -1 , soil C and net N mineralization rates were negatively correlated due to an increase of microbial N demand during plant litter mineralization. When net N mineralization was >162 (or 159) μg N g -1 TN d -1 , soil C and net N mineralization rates were positively correlated owing to a greater microbial mining of N from soil organic matter (SOM). Further, elevated temperature increased soil C and net N mineralization rates, and changed the relationships between soil C and net N mineralization. Agro-industrial systems provide large quantities of organic wastes that could imply an important environmental risk. While manures can be easily treated by anaerobic digestion, horticultural fruit wastes generally cannot be processed alone and should be treated by co-digestion. To use organic wastes as fertilizers is fundamental to improve understanding of their impact on soil-plant systems. In this research, cattle manure, poultry litter, pig slurry and onion waste were collected. Animal manures were studied without treatment, treated by anaerobic digestion alone and in co-digestion with onion wastes. To study their effect on soil-plant systems, chemical and spectroscopic characterization of manures and their transformed products were combined with soil biological activity and growth dynamic of lettuce following wastes incorporation to the soil. Anaerobic digestion decreased the C/N ratio, whilst there was an increase in NH 4 + -N/N ratio and short-chain organic acids. The magnitude of these changes varied depending on the type of organic matter present in each material and the incorporation of onion wastes intensified them. However, the digestates presented similar structural characteristics to each other, independently of the material of origin. Digestate soil application produced a fast and short microbial stimulation (18-34 and 7-11 mg CO 2 during the first 6 h, digestates vs. rest of treatments). The digestate dosage should be done according to the content of NH 4 + -N given that the vegetal growth is related to it. Understanding the interactions among organic manure chemical composition, decomposition and nitrogen (N) fertilization is critical for sustainable agriculture management. Six organic manures were incubated in a cultivated black soil with or without N addition for one year, and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions from these organic manures were monitored. Chemical compositions of the organic manures were determined by elemental analysis, proximate chemical analysis, and carbon (C)-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and evaluated after cupric-oxide oxidation for lignin biomarkers. During the experimental period, 19-44% of manure C was decomposed without N addition, which decreased to 17-35% with N addition, except for the composted furfural residue with rice dregs. However, during different decomposition stages, N effect changed from stimulation to inhibition, or behaved as increasing inhibition. During stage 1 (days 0-100) when N stimulation effect reached a maximum, CO 2 emissions from manure had positive relationships with labile C fraction indicators, including total sugars, soluble polyphenols, and lignin cinnamyl/vanillyl ratio regardless of N addition. N effect on manure decomposition was related to the C/N ratio and labile organic C content. During stage 2 (days 101-267), N effect shifted to inhibition, with CO 2 emissions from manure negatively related to lignin vanillyl-units content. The magnitude of N inhibition increased linearly with the aromaticity of dissolved organic C, and was strengthened by nitrate in manure. Finally, N inhibition effect reached a maximum during stage 3 (days 268-365), increasing with higher aromatic C in manure. Critical factors for manure decomposition shifted from total sugars, soluble polyphenols, and lignin cinnamyl-units to recalcitrant lignin vanillyl-units and aromatic C fraction, which mediated the type and magnitude of N effect on decomposition.
