Polyomavirus BK (BKV) is the cause of polyomavirus-associated nephropathy resulting in premature graft loss. There are limited data regarding the role of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and its prevention in developing BKV viremia and PVAN. In a prospective study, we analyzed 207 consecutive renal transplant recipients previously enrolled in 2 randomized trials evaluating different CMV prevention regimens with routine screening for BKV and CMV. Of these, 59 received valganciclovir and 100 valacyclovir prophylaxis; 48 patients were managed by preemptive therapy. At 3 years, the incidence of BKV viremia and PVAN was 28% and 5%, respectively. CMV DNAemia developed in 55% and CMV disease in 6%. Both BKV viremia (42% vs 23% vs 21%, P = .006) and PVAN (12% vs 2% vs 2%, P = .011) were increased in patients treated with valganciclovir prophylaxis compared to valacyclovir and preemptive therapy. Using multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression, valganciclovir prophylaxis was independent predictor of BKV viremia (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.38, P = .002) and PVAN (HR = 4.73, P = .026). In contrast, the risk of subsequent BKV viremia was lower in patients with antecedent CMV DNAemia (HR = 0.50, P = .018). These data suggest valganciclovir prophylaxis may be associated with increased risk of BKV viremia and PVAN. Current theory and supporting research suggests that radial transport is the most limiting factor to root water uptake, raising the question whether only absorbing root length and radial conductivity matter to water uptake. Here, we extended the porous pipe analytical model of root water uptake to entire root networks in 3D and analysed the relative importance of axial and radial characteristics to total uptake over parameter ranges reported in the literature. We found that network conductance can be more sensitive to axial than radial conductance of absorbing roots. When axial transport limits uptake, more dichotomous topology, especially towards the base of the network, increases water uptake efficiency, while the effect of root length is reduced. Whole root system conductance was sensitive to radial transport and length in model lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.), but to axial transport and topology in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), suggesting the root habit niche space of monocots may be constrained by their loss of secondary growth. A deep tap root calibrated to oak (Quercus fusiformis J. Buchholz) hydraulic parameters required 15 times more xylem volume to transport comparable amounts of water once recalibrated to parameters from juniper (Juniperus ashei Small 1901), showing that anatomical constraints on axial conductance can lead to significant trade-offs in woody roots as well. This study concerns the treatment by precipitation of three acidic and metal-rich leachates by using various reagents. Two treatment modes (simple and combined precipitation) have been performed to evaluate the metals removal efficiency and the dewatering ability of the generated sludge. It appears that for the three leachates used, the Ca(OH)(2) addition gave better metals removal at pH 10.0 than the use of NaOH at the same pH. Moreover, the combination of NaOH and Na(2)S allows better removal for Pb(2+), Zn(2+), Cu(2+) and Mn(2+) ions than with NaOH/Na(2)CO(3) or NaOH/Na(2)HPO(4). The dewaterability (vacuum filtration) of precipitates produced during the treatment of soil leachate was established as follows on the basis of the specific resistance to filtration (SRF) values: sulphides (4.3 x 10(12)mkg(-1))
