Turning biomass into biochar as a multifunctional carbon-based material for water remediation has attracted much research attention. Sawdust and rice husk were selected as feedstock for biochar (BC) production, aiming to explore their performance as a catalyst to activate persulfate (PS) for degrading acid orange 7 (AO7). There was an excellent synergistic effect in the combined BC/PS system. Sawdust biochar (MX) showed a faster and more efficient performance for the AO7 degradation due to its abundant oxygen functional groups, compared to rice husk biochar (DK). In the BC/PS system, AO7 was well decolorized and mineralized. Based on the two-dimensional correlation analysis method, the azo conjugation structure and naphthalene ring of AO7 molecule changed first then benzene ring changed during the reaction. Moreover, AO7 decolorization efficiency increased with the increase of PS concentration and biochar dosage, and the deacrease of pH. Biochar deactivated after used twice. When the biochar reached its adsorption equilibrium of AO7, the AO7 could not be degraded in the BC/PS system. SO 4 - and OH participated in the reaction together and OH played the main role in activating PS to AO7 decolorization based on the radical scavengers experiment. Several environmental factors (e.g. food source, pesticides, toxins, parasites and pathogens) influence development and maturation of honey bees (Apis mellifera). Therefore, controlled experimental conditions are mandatory when studying the impact of environmental factors: particularly food quality and nutrient consumption. In vitro larval rearing is a standard approach for monitoring food intake of larvae and the labelling of food is necessary to quantify intake in controlled feeding experiments. Here, we tested the suitability of two food dyes, Allura Red and Brilliant Blue, in an experimental set up using in vitro reared honey bee larvae and freshly hatched adult workers. Absorbance of both dyes was measured, in food and dye-fed larvae, to determine the optimal dye concentrations for accurate detection and quantification. By quantifying relative dye concentrations in dye mixtures, relative concentrations of mixed dyes can be estimated independent of the total food consumed by the larvae. Survival assays were conducted to test the impact of both dyes on larval and worker bee survival. Worker bees showed no increase in adult mortality, when fed with dyed honey. Larval survival was not significantly different until the late pupal stage. The physiological impact of dye feeding was tested by measuring larval immune response. No changes in innate immune gene expression were detectable for larvae fed with dyed and non-dyed food. In conclusion, we established a non-invasive food labelling protocol for food intake quantification in in vitro reared honey bee larvae, using non-toxic, inexpensive, and easy to apply food dyes., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Biodegradation of a monoazo dye - Acid Orange 7 (AO7) was investigated by using an internal circulation baffled biofilm reactor. For accelerating AO7 biodegradation, endogenous electron donors produced from AO7 by UV photolysis were added into the reactor. The result shows that AO7 removal rate can be accelerated by using its endogenous electron donors, such as sulfanilic and aniline. When initial AO7 concentration was 13.6mg/L, electron donors generated by 8h UV photolysis were added into the same system. The biodegradation rate 0.4mg 0.05 h -1 was enhanced 60% than that without adding electron donor. Furthermore, sulfanilic and aniline were found to be the main endogenous electron carriers, which could accelerate the steps of the azo dye biodegradation., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. A sensitive cloud point extraction method for simultaneous determination of trace amounts of sunset yellow (SY), allura red (AR) and brilliant blue (BB) by spectrophotometry was developed. Experimental parameters such as Triton X-100 concentration, KCl concentration and initial pH on extraction efficiency of dyes were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) with a Doehlert design. Experimental data were evaluated by applying RSM integrating a desirability function approach. The optimum condition for extraction efficiency of SY, AR and BB simultaneously were: Triton X-100 concentration 0.0635 mol L(-1), KCl concentration 0.11 mol L(-1) and pH 4 with maximum overall desirability D of 0.95. Correspondingly, the maximum extraction efficiency of SY, AR and BB were 100%, 92.23% and 95.69%, respectively. At optimal conditions, extraction efficiencies were 99.8%, 92.48% and 95.96% for SY, AR and BB, respectively. These values were only 0.2%, 0.25% and 0.27% different from the predicted values, suggesting that the desirability function approach with RSM was a useful technique for simultaneously dye extraction. Linear calibration curves were obtained in the range of 0.02-4 for SY, 0.025-2.5 for AR and 0.02-4 μg mL(-1) for BB under optimum condition. Detection limit based on three times the standard deviation of the blank (3Sb) was 0.009, 0.01 and 0.007 μg mL(-1) (n=10) for SY, AR and BB, respectively. A new paired ion electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry method for determination of anionic surfactants in water samples was developed. In this method, dicationic ion-pairing reagents were complexed with monoanionic analytes to facilitate analyte detection in positive mode electrospray ionization - mass spectrometry. Single ion monitoring and selected reaction monitoring on a triple quadrupole instrument were performed and compared. Four dicationic reagents were tested for the determination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBS), and stearic acid (SA), among other common anions. The obtained limits of detection were compared with those from previous literature. Solid phase extraction using a C18 cartridge was performed in order to eliminate matrix interferences. A literature review was compiled for the methods published between 2010 and 2015 for determination of anionic surfactants. The optimized method was more sensitive than previously developed methods with LOD values of 2.35, 35.4, 37.0, 1.68, and 0.675 pg for SDS, SA, DBS, PFOS, and PFOA, respectively. This research deals with the application of untreated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in their agglomerates form for the removal of non-ionic (TX-100), cationic (CTAB) and anionic (SDBS) surfactants from aqueous media. In order to optimize the removal process, the influence of several key parameters was investigated including contact time under different solid/liquid ratios, initial solution pH, temperature, along with ultrasonication assistance and desorption assays. Experimentations revealed that pH variation enhanced the removal capacities at optimum values of 6, 2 and 8 for TX-100, SDBS and CTAB, respectively, and that hydrophobic interaction is a major adsorption factor, especially for non-ionic surfactant with possible electrostatic interactions occurring for the ionic ones. As well, removal efficiencies peaked for an optimum temperature range between 35 and 45 °C. As for the ultrasonication assistance, it enhanced the overall removal capacities, especially that of the ionic surfactant, with an enhancement of 52% for the case of SDBS after 1h of treatment. The modeling results revealed that the pseudo-second order model provided the best correlation of the dynamic data and that the process was controlled by intraparticle diffusion phenomena. At equilibrium, and under optimized experimental conditions, untreated MWCNTs showed promising removal capacities with 359, 312 and 156 mg/g for TX-100, SDBS and CTAB, respectively., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. The objectives of the present work were to compare the primary sex ratio in sperm with the secondary sex ratio recorded in the offspring produced by artificial insemination (AI) with the same sperm and assess whether the primary sex ratio is influenced by sperm survival and motility after thawing. Calving data of 98 Holstein Friesian bulls used in AI were collected during 4 years, and commercial semen of the same bulls was analyzed immediately after thawing and after swim-up using a real-time polymerase chain reaction method developed and validated in our laboratory. Calving data relative to single bulls did not reveal any significant deviation between genders from the theoretical 1:1 for none of the bulls, being the mean values of male and female calves born 52.1 ± 2.80% and 47.9 ± 2.71%, respectively. Thereafter, calving events of bulls were classified and analyzed according to four classes of years: 2009 (n = 13,261), 2010 (n = 21,551), 2011 (n = 24,218), and 2012 (n = 41,726), and seasons categorized as winter, spring, summer, and fall. When data aggregated per years were analyzed, the difference between the two sexes was significant (P < 0.005) in favor of the male gender, whereas no influence of the season was evidenced. Real-time polymerase chain reaction did not evidence any difference between the mean values of frequency of Y chromosome-bearing sperm detected in three sperm batches of the same bulls analyzed immediately after thawing (51.1 ± 2.1), nor a difference with respect to the theoretical 1:1 ratio was reported after sperm analysis of one batch of sperm of the bulls analyzed after swim-up and immediately after thawing (50.1 ± 2.1 and 49.8 ± 1.8, respectively). The results are consistent with the observation of the farmers who often report a skewed sex ratio of the calves being born with AI in favor of the male gender. However, we have not evidenced differences in the primary sex ratio with respect to the theoretical 1:1 ratio both at thawing and after swim-up, thus demonstrating that the freezing procedure itself does not impact selectively on the survival of the X or Y chromosome-bearing sperm. Therefore, we hypothesize that the difference between genders observed after AI is more likely due to the events occurring after fertilization, which can comprise an impaired function of the X- or Y-bearing sperm with consequences on embryo development or a maternal influence., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. In this work, Mg-Al CO3-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were used as adsorbent materials for sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) in aqueous solutions, the enriched SDBS can be directly detected by IO4(-)-H2O2 chemiluminescence (CL) system. The commonly existing cations cannot be enriched by Mg-Al CO3-LDHs due to the structurally positively charged layers of LDHs, while other adsorbed anionic interferents had no effect on the IO4(-)-H2O2 CL reaction. The corresponding linear regression equation was established in the range of 0.1-10 μM for SDBS. The detection limit at a signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of 3 for SDBS was 0.08 μM. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for nine repeated measurements of 0.5 μM SDBS was 2.6%. This proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of SDBS in river water samples. Determination of silver sulfadiazine degradation products in several stress media was carried out by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array detector (DAD) and hybrid mass spectrometer triple quadrupole-linear trap. The optimal chromatographic method used a Hypercarb column with a stationary phase 100% carbon, a mobile phase composed by a mixture 45:55 formic acid 1% solution and acetonitrile and detection at 275 nm. Structure elucidation was carried out on the mass spectrometry system using same chromatographic conditions and based on MS/MS techniques. Under these conditions up to 9 possible impurities were demonstrated to be degradation products respecting silver sulfadiazine evolution under different stress conditions: temperature, acid, basic, oxidation, reduction and catalyzed photodegradation. Sulfacetamide, sulfanilic acid (4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid), aniline, pyrimidin-2-amine, 4-aminobenzenesulfonamide, 4-methylidenesulfanilaniline, 4-aminophenol, 4-amino-n-methyl benzenesulfonamide and benzenesulfonic acid were identified by mass spectrometry in order to cover the possible degradation paths of silver sulfadiazine. Kinetics were also evaluated to obtain the prediction of shelf life of the substance. The linearity domain for the method was between 0.0005 mg/ml and 0.25mg/ml for each compound. Recovery factors in accuracy determination were between 95 and 105% relative to target concentrations of silver sulfadiazine and the quantitation limit was 0.00025 mg/ml., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. In this manuscript, we report the preparation and characterization of sulphosalicylic doped tetraethoxysilane (SATEOS), composite material by sol-gel method as a new ion exchanger for the removal of Ni(II) from aqueous solution. The fine granular material was prepared by acid catalyzed condensation polymerization through sol-gel mechanism in the presence of cationic surfactant. The material has an ion exchange capacity of 0.64 mequiv./g(dry) for sodium ions, 0.60 mequiv./g(dry) for potassium ions, 1.84 mequiv./g(dry) for magnesium ions, 1.08 mequiv./g(dry) for calcium ions and 1.36 mequiv./g(dry) for strontium ions. Its X-ray diffraction studies suggest that it is crystalline in nature. The material has been characterized by SEM, IR, TGA and DTG so as to identify the various functional groups and ion exchange sites present in this material. Quantum chemical computations at DFT/B3LYP/6-311G (d,p) level on model systems were performed to substantiate the structural conclusions based ion instrumental techniques. Investigations into the elution behaviour, ion exchange reversibility and distribution capacities of this material towards certain environmentally hazardous metal ions are also performed. The material shows good chemical stability towards acidic conditions and exhibits fast elution of exchangeable H(+) ions under neutral conditions. This material shows remarkable selectivity for Ni(II) and on the basis of its Kd value (4×10(2) in 0.01M HClO4) some binary separations of Ni(II) from other metal ions are performed., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detector (C(4)D) was developed to separate azo-dyestuff acid orange 7 (AO7) and its six degradation products. The analyzed products were sulfamic acid, oxalic acid, benzenesulfonic acid, 4-hydroxybenzene sulfonic acid, phthalic acid, and 4-aminobenzene sulfonic acid. In developing the method, types and concentrations of running buffers, injecting voltage and time, and applied voltage were tested to obtain optimum conditions to analyze target compounds. The separation was successfully achieved within 10 min using a fused-silica capillary under the following conditions: 20 mmol L(-1) acetate acid buffer, electrokinetic injection of -12 kV × 10 s, and applied voltage of -13 kV. A novel simultaneous cloud point extraction method for the determination of carmoisine and brilliant blue FCF by spectrophotometry has been developed. The method is based on the cloud point extraction of carmoisine and brilliant blue FCF from aqueous solution using Triton X-100, diluting the extracted surfactant rich phase with water and measuring the absorbance at 522 and 640 nm for carmoisine and brilliant blue FCF, respectively. The effects of different parameters such as pH, concentration of surfactant and temperature on the cloud point extraction of both dyes were investigated and optimum conditions were established. Linear calibration curves were obtained in the range of 0.02-3.50 μg mL(-1) for carmoisine and 0.05-3.50 μg mL(-1) for brilliant blue FCF under optimum conditions. Detection limit based on three times the standard deviation of the blank (3S(b)) was 0.017 and 0.016 μg mL(-1) (n=10) for carmoisine and brilliant blue FCF, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for 0.1 μg mL(-1) was 4.14 and 3.30% (n=10), for carmoisine and brilliant blue FCF, respectively. A number of 20 compounds of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LASs) family were identified by electron impact mass spectrometry (EI-MS) in water samples collected from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). This paper presents the mass spectra of 20 compounds, the proposed mechanism of formation of the diagnostic ions obtained by EI-MS and the distribution of individual isomers in water samples collected from compartments of WWTP. In this paper, a cloud point extraction method for the determination of trace amounts of Orange II by spectrophotometry is described. The method is based on the extraction of Orange II from aqueous solution using mixed micelles of non-ionic surfactant, Triton X-100 and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) in acidic media. The extracted surfactant rich phase is diluted with water and its absorbance is measured at 484 nm by a spectrophotometer. The effects of surfactant, acid and salt concentration, incubation time and temperature were investigated. The calibration graph was linear in the range of 2.1-420 ng mL(-1) of Orange II in the initial solution with r=0.9991 (n=12). Detection limit based on three times the standard deviation of the blank (3S(b)) was 0.67 ng mL(-1) and the relative standard deviation (RSD) for 35 and 105 ng mL(-1) of Orange II was 1.20% and 1.49% (n=10), respectively. The method was applied to the determination of Orange II in different food samples.

Sludge adsorbent (SA) and commercial activated carbon fibers (ACFC and ACFT) were applied to Orange II and Chrysophenine (CH) adsorption (BET surface area: ACFC>ACFT>SA). ACFT was primarily in the micropore range, while SA was approximately 500 A (macropore) and 80 A (mesopore). The ACFC pore volume was high in both the mesopore and micropore regions. Measurement of the oxygen surface functional groups of the adsorbents using Boehm's titration method showed a similar distribution on the carbon fibers (mainly in the carbonyl group), while SA was mainly in the carboxyl, lactone and phenolic groups. The SA, ACFC and ACFT adsorption capacities of Orange II (30-80 mg/l) ranged from 83 to 270, 209-438, and 25-185 mg/g at temperatures ranging from 10 to 60 degrees C, respectively. CH concentration ranged from 30 to 80 mg/l, corresponding to SA and ACFC adsorption capacities of 39-191 and 48-374 mg/g over the defined temperature range, from 10 to 60 degrees C. CH adsorption on ACFT was low. The adsorption capacity of Orange II on ACFT was lower than on SA at 10 degrees C, but at higher temperatures the Orange II molecules were transported into the ACFT, producing an adsorption capacity similar to that of SA. Mass transfer increased with temperature, overcoming the adsorption energy barrier. Overall, SA and ACFC were more effective than ACFT.

The first bioanalytical assay for the simultaneous determination of sorafenib and sorafenib-glucuronide in mouse plasma and liver homogenate was developed and validated. In addition, the structure of the glucuronide metabolite was elucidated. The quantitative assay started with addition of isotopically labeled internal standards to a 20 microl sample volume and protein precipitation with acetonitrile, the supernatant was diluted with water and injected into the chromatographic system. A polar embedded reversed-phase column with gradient elution using formic acid in water-acetonitrile was used. The eluate was transferred into an electrospray interface with positive ionization and the analytes were detected and quantified using triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The assay was validated in the ranges 10-5000 ng/ml for sorafenib and 1-500 ng/ml for sorafenib-glucuronide, the lowest levels of these ranges (10 and 1 ng/ml) being the lower limits of quantification (LLQ). Within day precisions were 2-8%, between day precisions 2-10% (both excluded the LLQ level of the glucuronide) and accuracies were between 89% and 106%. Both analytes were chemically stable under all relevant conditions. The assay was successfully applied in pilot in vivo pharmacokinetic studies with sorafenib in mice.

The removal of water-soluble sulphonated phenylazonaphthol dye effluents generated by textile industries is an important issue in wastewater treatment. Microbial treatment of environmental pollutants including dyes, with white rot fungi has received wide attention as a potential alternative for conventional methods in wastewater treatment. Three sulphonated phenylazonaphthol dyes with similar molecular structures Acid Orange 7, Acid Orange 8 and Mordant Violet 5 were selected and degraded by the white rot fungus Pleurotus ostreatus. Chemical instrumental analysis methods such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis combined with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (CE-ESI-MS) were used to identify the degraded dyes. Mordant Violet 5 had two degradation pathways when degraded by P. ostreatus. The first degradation pathway for Mordant Violet 5 was for trans structure and the cis-Mordant Violet 5 followed the second pathway. Acid Orange 8 and Acid Orange 7 had the same degradation mechanism as the first degradation mechanism for Mordant Violet 5, that is cleavage of azo bond at the naphthalene ring side where benzenesulfonic acid and 1,2-naphthoquinone are formed.

We have demonstrated the usefulness of p-toluenesulfonic acid (TsOH) as a reference substance to calibrate a water-soluble standard by NMR for quantitative analysis. In order to make TsOH convenient for this purpose, we first of all established its molar extinction coefficient under these conditions (epsilon = 351 at 262 nm). This was done by comparing it by quantitative NMR (qNMR) with a compound of known molar extinction coefficient, guanosine monophosphate. TsOH was then used as the standard in a second qNMR experiment to measure an aqueous solution of phosphoglycolate, a metabolite of interest in our laboratory. Perhaps due to its content of water, the purity of this compound was found to be 82%, lower than the value of 94% from the manufacturer.

A new methodology capable of performing the simultaneous analysis of the main surfactants--linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS), alkyl ethoxysulfates (AES), alkyl sulfates (AS), nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPEOs) and alcohol polyethoxylates (AEOs)--and their carboxylated metabolites--sulfophenyl carboxylic acids (SPCs) and alkylphenol ethoxycarboxylates (APECs)--in environmental samples has been developed for the first time. Extraction is carried out by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) from water and sediment, respectively. Identification and quantification of the target compounds is performed using a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system equipped with an electrospray interface (ESI) operating in mixed-mode. Optimization of parameters such as pH, ionic strength, temperature and solvents has been carried out in order to obtain recoveries in the range from 70 to 107% for most homologs, while the limits of detection are 0.05-0.5 ng mL(-1) in water and 1-10 ng g(-1) in sediment. The proposed methodology has been applied for the simultaneous determination of all the target compounds in samples taken from aquatic ecosystems in the SW of Spain. Values for LAS, AS, AES, NPEOs and AEOs are up to 38.7, 3.0, 2.9, 5.0 and 1.2 microg L(-1) in waters, and in the ranges of 1.73-12.80, 0.11-0.24, 0.02-0.59, 1.94-2.70 and 0.64-3.64 mg kg(-1) in sediments, respectively. The highest concentrations of metabolites found in water are 149.6 microg L(-1) of SPCs and 3.9 microg L(-1) of APECs.

GC/FID and HPLC/MS single ion monitoring methods have been evaluated for the determination of trace levels of methyl, ethyl and isopropyl esters of p-toluenesulfonic acid and methyl, ethyl, isopropyl and n-butyl esters of benzenesulfonic acid in drug substances. These sulfonate esters have been highlighted as potential genotoxins. HPLC/MS was found to be more promising and limits of quantification were between 2.5 and 5 ng/mL, which enabled detection limits in drug substance at 0.01-0.1 ppm for a 50 mg/mL solution. For one drug substance excellent recoveries of 94-95% were obtained at the 1.0 ppm level, however, with a second drug substance, a besylate salt, recoveries ranged from 86% to 100% and were dependant on the sample preparation. Limited stability of the sulfonate esters in various potential sample solutions indicated that samples may need to be prepared immediately before injection.

The solid-state thermal polymerization of crystalline 2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol bis-(p-toluenesulfonate) (PTS) was investigated by solid-state 13C NMR, the first application of this technique to such a process. The kinetics of the thermal process was examined at temperatures of 40.5, 51.0, and 59.5 degrees C, with a magic angle spinning (MAS) rate of 5 kHz. The first-order rate constants associated with the induction (k0) and autocatalytic (k max) periods were calculated by monitoring signal intensities (conversion) throughout the course of the thermal polymerization. While estimations of the activation energy (E(a) approximately 20 kcal/mol) from the NMR experiments are similar to values obtained by other analytical techniques, estimations of the autocatalytic effect (k max/k0 approximately 22) were significantly lower. Likely causes for the unusually small autocatalytic effect are discussed.

Three-dimensional distributions of fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs: more specifically, DSBP and DAS1), which are sewage-derived water-soluble markers, were observed in Tokyo Bay water through multi-layer sampling of water at 20 locations. In summer, FWAs predominated in the surface layers, with trace but significant concentration of FWAs in bottom water due to stratification of seawater. In winter, on the other hand, FWAs were extensively mixed into the bottom layers because of the vertical mixing of seawater. In the surface layer, FWA concentrations and the DSBP/DAS1 ratio (the concentration ratio of DSBP to DAS1) were lower in summer than in winter, suggesting more efficient photodegradation of FWAs in euphotic zones during the summer due to stronger solar radiation. Horizontally, FWAs were widely distributed over the surface layer of Tokyo Bay. Surface water with DSBP concentrations above 50ng/L, corresponding to <200 times dilution of sewage effluent, was found to have spread up to 10km from the coastline. In addition, an offshore decline in FWA concentrations was observed, showing a half-distance of 10-20km. The decrease was caused by dilution by seawater of fresh water containing FWAs. The eastern part of the bay was different with respect to surface layers, with higher concentrations seen in northeastern parts. Furthermore, dispersion of combined sewer overflow (CSO)-derived water mass was observed in Tokyo Bay after heavy rain.

Removal of azo dye effluents generated by textile photography industries is a main issue in wastewater treatment. Enzymatic treatment of dyes appears to be one of the most efficient processes for their degradation. The elucidation of degradation pathways is of special interest considering health and environmental priorities. Ex situ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and electrospray ionization (ESI)-ion trap mass spectrometry performed directly on incubation medium have been used for the first time to follow kinetics of sulfonated azo dye Orange II enzymatic degradation. Nine transformation products were identified using these complementary analyses performed ex situ without any prior treatment. Three types of cleavage are proposed for the degradation pathway: (i) a symmetrical splitting of the azo linkage that leads to the formation of 4-aminobenzenesulfonate (and 1-amino-2-naphthol, not detected); (ii) an asymmetrical cleavage on the naphthalene side that generates 1,2-naphthoquinone and 4-diazoniumbenzenesulfonate as products, with the latter one being transformed into 4-hydroxybenzensulfonate; and (iii) a third degradation pathway that leads to 2-naphthol and 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate. Moreover, three other intermediates have been identified. This study, which constitutes the first concomitant use of (1)H NMR spectroscopy and ESI-ion trap mass spectrometry in this field, illustrates the indubitable interest of the ex situ approach.

This paper is devoted to the evaluation of the degradation pathway of the E133 Brilliant Blue FCF (C.I. 42090) that is largely used in the food industry. The degradation is studied in oxidation conditions obtained by addition of potassium persulfate at different persulfate to dye molar ratios under natural sunlight irradiation. The degradation pathway of the dye passes through a species coloured in dark blue and then gives rise to uncoloured species. Due to the low volatility and the poor thermal stability of the dye, reversed-phase liquid chromatography associated to mass spectrometry and tandom mass spectrometry was employed to follow the kinetics of degradation and identify some intermediates. The identification of organic species still present in the decoloured dye and the value of COD obtained in these conditions show evidence that complete decolorization does not correspond to complete mineralisation. No direct information of toxicity is available for the uncoloured degradation products but the further formation of aromatic amines can not be excluded.

A new method has been developed for the determination of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) from various marine organisms, and compared with Soxhlet extraction. The technique applied includes the use of pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) for the extraction stage, preconcentration of the samples, purification by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and analysis by liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. The spiked concentrations were added to the samples (wet mass of the organisms: Solea senegalensis and Ruditapes semidecussatus), which were homogenized and agitated continuously for 25 h. The samples were extracted by pressurized hot solvent extraction using two different extraction temperatures (100 and 150 degrees C) and by traditional Soxhlet extraction. The best recoveries were obtained employing pressurized hot solvent extraction at 100 degrees C and varied in the range from 66.1 to 101.3% with a standard deviation of between 2 and 13. Detection limit was between 5 and 15 microg kg(-1) wet mass using HPLC-fluorescence detection. The analytical method developed in this paper has been applied for LAS determination in samples from a Flow-through exposure system with the objective of measuring the bioconcentration of this surfactant.

This paper describes the EC treatment of orange II dye solution in a flow cell using sodium chloride as an internal electrolyte. In this technique dye solutions were passed through a flow-through EC apparatus consisting of a flow-through cell, the electrode assembly, the feed pump and the DC power supply unit. The cell contained five parallel iron electrodes, which form four parallel cells. Experiments were run at 25 degrees C under various electrolyte concentrations, dye concentrations, current density, flow rate of the solution, and pH at dc current range of 2-5A. Various number of recycles of the treated dye solution were also performed at the same dc current range. Optimum conditions to get high removal efficiency were experimentally determined. It was found that 98.5% of the dye was removed from the solution under the optimum conditions. The residue from a blank run (pH = 7.3) and a dye added run (pH = 8.5) were collected by vacuum filtration and analyzed by XRD after drying in a vacuum desiccator. The XRD data indicated the presence of mainly maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4) in the residue. However, there is not much difference between the X-ray diffractograms of the blank sample and the dye-containing residue to warrant any conclusions therefrom with regard to the interactions between the oxides and the dye molecules.

Discrimination and quantitation of the 20 positional isomers of C10-C13 linear alkyl benzenesulfonates (LASs), based on the use of reversed-phase liquid chromatography-electrospray ionisation in negative ion mode ion-trap mass spectrometry, was undertaken. Discrimination was achieved by LAS MS-MS analysis into the ion trap, by monitoring specific fragment ions resulting from the benzylic cleavage of the carbon alkyl chain on both side of the LAS phenyl group. Parameters affecting the electrospray ionisation source and the ion-trap operation were optimised. Calibration curves for the different isomers were established and this permitted their quantitation by mass spectrometry for the first time. MS-MS responses were dependent on both the position of the phenyl group on the alkyl chain and the length of this alkyl chain, these responses being higher for the external isomers and the longer alkyl chain homologues. The precision, expressed as relative standard deviation ranged between 9 and 13%. Detection limits for LAS isomers were between 0.03 and 0.07 mg/l and therefore the method is sensitive enough to be applied to environmental samples.

A systematic investigation of optimal conditions for determining the homologues of linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS) by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) using the large-volume sample stacking technique was presented. The most effective sample stacking and separation conditions was 20 mM borate buffer with 30% acetonitrile at pH 9.0, and the sample hydrodynamic injection of up to 90 s at 4 p.s.i. (1 p.s.i. = 6,892.86 Pa) (around 711 nl). Under such conditions, approximately a 100-fold enrichment factor was achieved based on peak heights. The reproducibility of migration time and quantitative results of stacking CZE can be improved by using internal standards. Quantitation limits of the homologues of LAS were 0.002-0.01 mg/l under these enrichment conditions. The analysis of real samples of laundry and dishwashing detergents was performed. The established high-performance liquid chromatography method was applied to evaluate the stacking CZE method, and compatible results were obtained.

Two-dimensional models for biological clogging and sorptive trace transport were used to study the progress of clogging in a sand box experiment. The sand box had been inoculated with a strip of bacteria and exposed to a continuous injection of nitrate and acetate. Brilliant Blue was regularly injected during the clogging experiment and digital images of the tracer movement had been converted to concentration maps using an image analysis. The calibration of the models to the Brilliant Blue observations shows that Brilliant Blue has a solid biomass dependent sorption that is not compliant with the assumed linear constant Kd behaviour. It is demonstrated that the dimensionality of sand box experiments in comparison to column experiments results in a much lower reduction in hydraulic conductivity (factor of 100) and that the bulk hydraulic conductivity of the sand box decreased only slightly. However, in the central parts of the clogged area, the observations and simulations clearly show a complex picture of flow diverting the injected nutrients around the clogged area as fingers. The calibration of the model demonstrates that the physical and microbiological processes (advection, dispersion, attachment-detachment, growth-decay) are all needed to capture the progress of clogging.

A method for the quantitative determination of the major anionic constituents of fountain solutions, typically mono-, di- and hydroxycarboxylates, alkylbenzenesulfonates, and inorganic anions, including orthophosphate and polyphosphates, is presented here for the first time. The analytical problems arising from extensive co-elution of many of these analytes on an ion-exchange column have been resolved through a combination of (i) careful selection of the concentration gradient of the sodium hydroxide eluent; (ii) parallel analysis by ion-exclusion chromatography; and (iii) determination of total phosphorus by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry.

The stability of 14 sulfonated benzene and naphthalene compounds was investigated using polymeric solid-phase extraction cartridges, based on the styrene-divinylbenzene polymer Isolute ENV+. Several different storage conditions were tested to carry out the stability study in polymeric cartridges, which included storage at room temperature, at 4 degrees C and at -20 degrees C, during a period of up to 3 months. An additional stability study was carried out, not with the polymeric solid matrix, but in an aqueous matrix. This study was performed storing the samples at 4 degrees C, during 2 months under three different conditions: acidifying the water sample to pH 2.5-3 with sulfuric acid, adding 1% of formaldehyde (additive used in waste water analyses), and storing the water sample at 4 degrees C without any additives. The extraction of the SPE process is analyzed by ion-pair chromatography-electrospray mass spectrometry, in the negative ion mode. This study showed that the stability of polar aromatic sulfonic acids on disposable polymeric cartridges and in the water matrix is related to temperature and pH, respectively. Target aromatic sulfonated compounds stored in polymeric solid-phase extraction cartridges, are more stable at lower temperatures. The target analytes showed also good stability when stored in water at acidic pH. From the different analytes studied, substituted naphthalenesulfonates suffered more degradation than mononaphthalenesulfonates or benzenesulfonates under the experimental conditions of this work.

This work presents a modified method to analyze linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LASs) in water samples. The method involves extraction of samples by a graphitized carbon black (GCB) cartridge, and direct derivatization in the GC injection port using a large-volume (10-20 microl) direct sample introduction (DSI) device with tetraalkylammonium (TAA) salts. The analytes were then identified and quantitated by ion-trap GC-MS. The large-volume DSI injection-port derivatization technique provides sensitivity, fast and reproducible results for LAS residues, to quantitation at 0.1 microg/l in 200 ml of water samples. The retention effect of TAA salts in the injection port was not detected. Enhanced selected mass chromatograms of [M-55]+ ions of butylated C10-C13 LASs by electron impact ionization MS allows one to determine LAS residues at trace levels in environmental samples. Recovery of total LASs in spiked variety water samples ranged from 89 to 112% while RSDs ranged from 2 to 13%.

Linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) are a group of anionic surfactants, characterised by having both a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic group. LAS is one of the major ingredients of synthetic detergents and surfactants and is used world-wide for both domestic and industrial applications. LAS is relatively rapidly aerobically degraded, but only very slowly or not at all degraded under anaerobic conditions. Therefore, LAS can be found in very high concentrations in most sewage sludge and enter the soil compartment as a result of sludge application. LAS can be found in elevated concentrations in soil immediately after sludge amendment, but a half-life of approximately 1-3 weeks will generally prevent accumulation in soil and biota. The concentration in soils that have not received sewage sludge recently, is generally less than 1 mg kg-1 and not more than 5 mg LAS kg-1. This is below the lowest concentration of LAS where effects have been observed in the laboratory. The laboratory data is in accordance with field studies using aqueous solutions of the sodium salt of LAS. However, observations of the ecological impact of sewage sludge applications or application of LAS spiked into sludge indicates a lower toxicity of LAS when applied in sludge. On the basis of the information reviewed in this paper, it is concluded that LAS can be found in high concentrations in sewage sludge, but that the relatively rapid aerobic degradation and the reduced bioavailability when applied via sludge, most likely will prevent LAS from posing a threat to terrestrial ecosystems on a long term basis.

Two HPLC assays were developed and validated for simultaneous quantitation of two sulfate metabolites, PD 163637 (VI) and PD 163639 (VIII), of an investigational antipsychotic drug CI-1007 (I) in monkey plasma and urine. VI and VIII were identified as major metabolites in monkey plasma, and both were excreted in urine. Monkey plasma samples were directly injected after deproteinization, and urine samples were analyzed after a clean-up procedure using methyl-tert.-butyl ether. Liquid chromatographic separation was achieved on a Zorbax RX C8 analytical column using gradient elution. Column effluent was monitored using fluorescence detection with excitation and emission wavelengths of 254 and 330 nm, respectively. Minimum quantitation limit was 50 ng/ml in plasma and 100 ng/ml in urine. Linearity was demonstrated up to 3000 ng/ml in plasma and urine. Recoveries of the analytes from plasma and urine were greater than 85%. The assay has been applied to the determination of VI and VIII in plasma and urine samples from monkeys receiving oral administration of I.

A simple and fast method is described for determining a linear alkylbenzenesulfonate (LAS) and its potential sulfonated and unsulfonated metabolites in natural waters. This method includes extraction of 60 ml of water with an octadecyl-bonded silica (C18) mini-column and analysis of the extract by high-performance liquid chromatography. A reversed-phase column with a 0.008 M potassium phosphate buffer (pH 2.2)-acetonitrile gradient as the mobile phase provides the separation. A UV detector, set at 215 nm, is employed.

A procedure for determining linear alkylbenzenesulphonates (LASs) in sewage sludge and amended soils has been developed. Extraction by sample treatment with 0.5 M potassium hydroxide in methanol and reflux was compared with a previously described extraction procedure in Soxhlet with methanol and solid sodium hydroxide in the sample. Repeatability results were similar with savings in extraction time, solvents and evaporation time. A clean-up method involving a C18 cartridge has been developed. Analytes were quantified by a reversed-phase HPLC method with UV and fluorescence detectors. Recoveries obtained were higher than 84%. The standing procedure was applied to high doses of sewage sludge-amended soils (15%) with increasing quantities of added LASs. Degradation data for a 116-day period are presented.

The degradation of phenylmercuric nitrate in the presence of sodium metabisulphite in eye drop formulations has been investigated using a stability-indicating high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method. HPLC methods have been developed for the quantitation of the principal degradation products (diphenyl-mercury, benzenesulphonic acid and benzenesulphinic acid) and a mechanism is proposed for their formation. The pharmaceutical significance of the interaction is briefly discussed.

An enrichment procedure involving percolation through octadecylsilica cartridges was applied to the extraction of linear alkylbenzenesulphonates (LASs), alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APEOs) and nonylphenol (NP) from treated and untreated municipal waste waters. The analytes were quantitated by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with UV-fluorescence detection. Recoveries higher than 80% were obtained from the analysis of biologically treated waste waters. The method allows rapid, precise and reliable determination of LASs and APEOs at concentrations as low as 20 and 4 micrograms l-1, respectively.

A method is presented for determining mixtures of calcium dodecylbenzene-sulphonate (CaDBS) and ethoxylated alkylphenols in pesticidal emulsifiable concentrates. The pesticide formulations are adsorbed on a pre-concentration column. The active ingredients, the solvents and the emulsifiers are eluted successively by using solvents with increasing polarities. The various homologues of CaDBS and the ethoxylated alkylphenols are separated by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography using methanol-water containing tetramethylammonium bromide. The oligomers of the ethoxylated phenols are separated on an aminopropyl-modified column using a solvent gradient (propan-2-ol-water and hexane-tetrahydrofuran). Quantitative results are given for synthetic samples. The degree of ethoxylation of the ethoxylated alkylphenols has been determined and the CaDBS components characterized.

The derivatization of benzenesulphonamide, N-ethylbenzenesulphonamide and N-phenylbenzenesulphonamide with trifluoroacetic and heptafluorobutyric anhydride and pentafluorobenzyl bromide has been studied. A rapid quantitative acylation is obtained in benzene in the presence of trimethylamine. Pentafluorobenzylation is performed by the extractive alkylation technique using tetrabutylammonium as counter ion and methylene chloride as solvent. Less than 20 min are required for a quantitative derivatization. The derivatized sulphonamides have a hydrophobic character, making them very suitable for gas chromatography. Trifluoroacetylation and heptafluorobenzylation decreases it. The derivatives have a high electron-capture detector response (minimum detectable quantity, 1-2 X 10-minus 16 moles/sec). A standard curve is given for the determination of N-phenylbenzenesulphonamide as trifluoroacetyl derivative in the range 1.8-90 ng/ml.

A thin-layer chromatographic method was investigated in which two series of sodium alkanesulphonates (C4-C18) and alkylbenzenesulphonates (C0-C14) were separated. All of the compounds tested were clearly separated on polyamide layers with aqueous ammonia-pyridine and aqueous ammonia-pyridine-methanol systems and detected with high sensitivity by spraying with a pynacryptol yellow reagent and then observing under UV light (253.6nm).
